How to Visit Mount Athos

To visit or see Mount Athos is one of the most sought after experiences for those traveling to Halkidiki. In this article you can find information on how to make a day-trip by boat or cruise and the procedures for permission to enter the semiautonomous republic.

Mount Athos cruises or private boat tours

The easiest way to experience this ancient wonder is to make a day-trip by boat. Since women cannot get into the republic, their only option to see Mount Athos is by boat tour. A variety of tours exist to suit everyone’s budget and taste. So what are the options that we recommend and how can you book your tour?

Mount Athos Cruise ship tours

This is a day-trip that begins early morning and returns by evening. There are different types of boats to choose from a simple tour boat to a glass bottom boat or even a pirate’s ship! Most offer refreshments, a meal and entertainment. It’s a fun filled day of relaxing on the boat, maybe seeing some dolphins and experience Greek entertainment.

From Sithonia, they leave from Ormos Panagias, but if you have a car you can find more budget options that leave from Ouranoupoli at the northern end of the Athos peninsula, just a short drive from Sithonia. Below we will list some options that we recommend from both ports of departure.

From: Sithonia, Ormos Panagias Menia Maria III – Pirate boat tour. Contact Katerina at Ormos Travel . They specialize in tours on the Menia Maria III and would be happy to give discounts for groups. If you would like an idea of the tour itself, you can read about it on this page .

From: Athos peninsula, Ouranoupoli Glass bottom boat cruises You have two options: one focuses just on Mount Athos and the monasteries in a 3h excursion . The same company offers another tour that lasts 5 hours and also includes a swimming stop at Ammouliani Island.

These more budget friendly options are ideal if you don’t want to spend the whole day on a boat, but just see the monasteries. Refreshments are not included but overall it gives really good value for the price. For further information and to book the 3h trip, click here . For the 5h trip, including a stop by beautiful Ammouliani island, click here .

Private boat tour to Mount Athos

This is a private boat that seats 7 persons – It includes Mount Athos, Sithonia islands and Ammouliani Island. It departs from marina Lagonisi, not far from Ormos Panagias.

Spend the day alone with your friends in an 8 hour tour that includes some of Sithonia’s best: Portokali beach and Diaporos island. The speedy boat then brings you across the gulf to see the Mount Athos monasteries and Ammouliani Island.

It costs more than the big boat tours, but you avoid the crowds and you have flexibility to stop at beaches of your choice or even to stop by the stunning Drenia Islands for lunch. For further information and to book, check here

How to enter the Mount Athos Monastic Republic

Visiting Athos is not a simple procedure. First of all only men are permitted to enter the Mount Athos region, conveniently excluding half the population. For a thousand years no woman has been able to visit Mount Athos or the monasteries except from a distance.

Permits are issued daily for 10 non-orthodox visitors and 100 Greeks and orthodox visitors. They are valid for a four-day visit and for specific dates. If you want it extended, it can only be done at the registration office in Karyes on the Athos peninsula.

All applicants must be over 18 years of age. Applicants younger that 18 must be accompanied by their father or as part of a group having the written permission of the parents and this letter should be notarized.

Procedure to obtain the permit

Everybody, whether orthodox or not, must obtain a permit called a “Diamonitirion” to enter the Athos peninsula. Make a reservation up to six months in advance, the earlier the better. This can be done by phone, fax or e-mail. You will be required to send a copy of your passport. Include from which port you plan on entering, Ouranoupolis (west) or Lerissos (east). In a couple of weeks you will receive a letter with further instructions. All reservations will need to be confirmed by telephone two weeks before your intended visit.

If you decide to change your reservation, please do this in advance so as to avoid a negative reaction that could affect your entering at a future date.

In addition to receiving the permit, advance reservations must now be made if you wish to stay overnight at one of the monasteries.

Visitors to Mt Athos are no longer required to personally visit the Pilgrims’ Bureau office in Thessaloniki to register and receive their papers.  You now proceed directly to the agreed upon point of entry and your papers will be ready for pick up. There is a cost of 30 euros.

The peninsula of Athos (the “third finger” of Chalkidiki) became an exclusive place of ascetics in the second half of the 9th century AD. At the same time they defined the borders of the monastic state and denied entry to non-clerics, and two centuries later officially denied entry to women, even including even the harem of the local Turkish “aga”. The region continues to be inaccessible to women until today.

Mount Athos is the name that was systematically used around 1100 AD, heyday during which the Great Lavra – the largest organized community – numbered 800 monks and a total of 180 operating monasteries. One of the oldest monasteries of Mount Athos are the Xeropotamou Monastery, Iviron Monastery, Vatopedi Monastery, Esfigmenou Monastery and Libra Monastery, like Athos Protaton, one of the oldest monastic settlements of the peninsula of Athos.

The Mount Athos community was strengthened during those years when monasteries began to accumulate wealth through donations of the believers and the subsidies of the state. As a result the phenomenon of greed of the clergy appeared, as they behaved as large landowners in the acquired land. These areas were leased to peasants who cultivated them and thus a large crowd of people came to depend indirectly from the monastic community.

A black page in the history of Mount Athos is the era of the 4th Crusade in 1204 AD, during which Latinos crusaders, except for the damage they caused to the monasteries, tortured and hung the monks until they managed to come under the protection of Pope Innocent and to save their lives. Next big blow that the monasteries received was a century later, when mercenaries of the Catalan Company plundered the estate of the Mount Athos and terrified the monks, leaving from the total of 300 monasteries only 35 in operation. In the last centuries of Byzantium, the Athos monasteries obtained the largest part of their material wealth, through support of the Byzantine emperors, as well as Slavic rulers and princes.

During the early period of Turkish rule the monasteries of Mount Athos continued to flourish, exempted from taxes and maintaining their property, however since the 16th century AD unbearable taxation was imposed that led to stagnation and abandonment of most monasteries. Valuable financial aid during the difficult years of Athos monastic life was offered by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Nordic rulers as of Moldova and Wallachia, and believers. In the area of Vatopedi the famous Athonite Academy that was founded in the 18th century attracted a large number of students for the next fifty years teaching them theology, philosophy and logic.

During the struggle of the Greek nation in 1821 , the monasteries of Mount Athos offered great help. They gave money, food, munitions and asylum to families who took refuge there, while about 800 monks fought alongside the fighter Emmanuel Papa in battles against the Ottomans. After the suppression of the revolution in Halkidiki, the punishment of Mount Athos was that the monks and the believers who had sought refuge in it would be slaughtered, that the printing press would be destroyed, looted and many priceless manuscripts would be lost. Mount Athos was finally released in 1912 by the Greek Royal Navy. The reception of the Greek fleet was enthusiastic, as the Greek flag was erected on the peninsula of Athos under the joyful beat of hundreds of bells of the monasteries. At that time 9,000-10,000 monks lived on Mount Athos.

During the Greco-Italian War of 1940 several young age monks asked to take roadmap for the Front, monasteries gave their animals to the Greek army and organized fundraisers to strengthen it. Then, during the German Occupation, the monks hid the relics and manuscripts in the catacombs to protect them from the invader. German scientists came to the Holy Mountain to photograph and study historical documents and manuscripts, and eventually attempted to steal them, but fortunately without achieving it.

The 1000th anniversary since the founding of the Mount Athos monastic community was celebrated with solemnity in 1963. Today about 1800 monks live there. The exceptional natural beauty and tranquility of the ascetic and monastic life attracts every year thousands of visitors.

Mount Athos Boat Trips

Mount Athos boat trips are very popular with visitors to Halkidiki in Greece, as they are the only way most people get to see these spectacular monasteries, with most boats leaving from Ouranopolis.

Mount Athos Boat Trips, from https://www.greece-travel-secrets.com/Mount-Athos-Boat-Trips.html

Only men can set foot on Mount Athos , and even for them it is a lengthy business to acquire a permit. Most people have to be content to enjoy a boat trip along the coast, to see the magnificent monasteries in their clifftop settings, against the backdrop of Mount Athos itself.

Some trips take visitors around the whole peninsula, to see the monasteries on the eastern side as well, but the vast majority of boats leave from Ouranópolis and limit themselves to the more spectacular western side of Athos. Ouranópolis itself is not an especially attractive place at which to be based, and most visitors are staying in Halkidikí or Thessaloníki . You may wish to spend one night in Ouranópolis in order to take one of the earlier boat trips.

Ouranopolis, Gateway to Mount Athos in Greece

From a practical point of view, it is illegal for the boats to venture closer than 500m to the shore, so take a pair of binoculars if you have them, and a telephoto lens for your camera if you wish to get close-up photographs. Don’t leave behind your pocket camera if that is all that you have, as you may well get some wonderful photos of the dolphins which sometimes swim alongside the boats and leap spectacularly out of the water.

The boat trips take at least four hours, and though they sell some food and drink on board, the choice is limited so take your own picnic lunch as well. The boats provide a commentary in Greek, English and German, but the PA systems on some boats are rather poor, so see if you can find a map to help you identify the main monasteries.

The First Monasteries

The first monasteries you pass are inland: Zográfou, the most northerly, and shortly afterwards Kastamonítou. The former was founded in the 10th century but like many monasteries has been rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today is home to a small number of Bulgarian monks. Kastamonítou is 11th century, and is also still inhabited.

The first monasteries of which you get good views are down on the coast. Docheiaríou comes into sight first, a cluster of attractive buildings on a hill behind a jetty. This working monastery was founded in the 10th century and in addition to some original frescoes in its churches also claims to have a piece of the True Cross.

Further along the coast is Xenofóntos, founded in the 10th century by St Xenofóntos, and also very much a working monastery – it even has a sawmill! Like many monasteries, though, it has been damaged over the years by fires and is now a mixture of periods and styles.

Saint Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece

Ágiou Panteleímonos

The next coastal monastery is the hugely impressive Ágiou Panteleímonos, dating back to the 12th century, with additions built by Russian monks in the 18th century, and inside you will get glimpses of the onion domes of churches standing above the red-rooved buildings.

Further on is the port of Dáfni, where pilgrims come ashore and where a small population exists to service the practical needs of the monks and their visitors. Inland from here is the monastery of Xiropotámou, another one which has suffered fire damage and been rebuilt in various styles.

Monastery of Simónos Pétras on Mount Athos in Greece

One of the most impressive sights is Simónos Pétras, on top of a rocky ridge, where it was founded in the 14th century. So too was Grigoríou, also on a clifftop if not quite as spectacular, and then Agiou Dionysiou with its pink and white balconies is perched 80m above the sea. Even higher is Ágiou Pávlou, nestling below Mount Athos itself. At this point most boats turn round and head back for Ouranópolis.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

athos boat trip

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

athos boat trip

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

athos boat trip

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

athos boat trip

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

athos boat trip

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

athos boat trip

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

athos boat trip

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.
