It's a shame that the itinerary has no sea days because the ship offers plenty to keep cruisers busy on board. There's a wealth of dining options, from the Italian cuisine-serving Onda by Scarpetta to a trendy food hall, plus a go-kart track, multistory twisty slides and a bar serving sustainable craft cocktails.

Best cruise for families: Royal Caribbean in the Mediterranean

How long are Mediterranean cruises?

Mediterranean cruises on Celebrity last from six to 12 nights. Spend seven nights visiting popular ports in Spain, France, and Italy, or longer voyages that include Greece and Turkey. 

When’s the best time to cruise? 

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean will vary depending on your particular interests and schedule. The main Mediterranean cruise season runs from April through November each year, with June to September the peak months. But with Celebrity you can cruise Europe year round. 

July to September is the peak summer season in the Mediterranean, when most Europeans take their summer vacation. April, May, June, later in September, and October are all great months to visit, too. You can sail the Mediterranean with Celebrity right up to November, which is a wonderful time for sightseeing with fewer people around. The best time to head to the far south of the region is from February to April, when the climate is perfect for exploring Israel and Egypt.

What should I pack?

When you’re packing for a Mediterranean cruise, swimwear and beach outfits are essential. You’ll need comfortable shoes for sightseeing, whether this involves walking over uneven cobblestone roads or clambering over the rocky paths of the Acropolis in Athens. 

A good sun hat is essential If you want to visit churches, synagogues, and cathedrals we recommend long pants or skirt and a scarf/shawl to cover your shoulders.  

If you’re traveling at the beginning or the end of the season, the weather could be cool, so bring cover-ups and a light waterproof jacket.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Do I need a visa?

You will need a passport to travel to the Mediterranean, but the vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries. 

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

When I was young I was lucky enough that my parents used to take me on trips with them, which is one of the reasons I love travelling so much today.

Especially my dad always used to travel for work and he took me with him when possible. Being a TV producer, one of the projects that allowed us to travel the most was a travel documentary set on cruise boats.

I’ve been on a number of cruises around the Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Caribbean and Middle East.

I haven’t seen it all but I can confidently say I’ve seen a fair few cruise ports around the world.

For this post I’ve teamed up with Celebrity Cruises to bring to you a compilation of the best cruise ports in the Mediterranean .

Best cruise ports in the Western Mediterranean

Barcelona is one of the cities that receive the most cruise passengers every year. Perfectly located in the Mediterranean it’s one of those iconic locations that you can’t miss.

Even if you only have a day in Barcelona you’ll still be able to see plenty of the famous Gaudí artworks around the city, maybe sample a few tapas and do some shopping on the Rambla.

If you feel like venturing off the beaten track make sure to pay Bunkers del Carmel a visit, it’s a park on the outskirts of Barcelona with a stunning view over the city.

Travelling on from Barcelona another popular Spanish harbour for Mediterranean cruises is Seville .

Seville is the capital of the Andalusia region and is particularly famous for flamenco dancing, the huge gothic cathedral (also the largest gothic cathedral in the world) and the beautiful Real Alcazar complex.

Seville is also home to Plaza de Espana, a picturesque square that the Star Wars fans might recognise as Naboo.

Smaller than Barcelona it still has plenty to offer cruise passengers, if anything the reduced size makes it easier to see as much as possible of the city in the brief time you have on land.

Palma de Mallorca

Continuing with the Spanish harbours an extremely popular cruise destination is Palma de Mallorca. Palma is a city on the Spanish island of Mallorca, in the western Mediterranean.

Palma de Mallorca has something to offer for everyone. With its beautiful beaches, stunning nature and history there is something for every type of cruise passenger.

The Santa Maria cathedral, a massive gothic cathedral that overlooks the harbour of Palma, is one of the main attractions.

You can easily spend a day in Palma de Mallorca walking along the tourist harbour, getting lost in the cobbled side streets and admiring the view from the top of the Santa Maria cathedral.

Palma de Mallorca is also blessed with pleasant weather all year round, which makes it a great destination to spend the cold European winter months .

While the city of La Spezia in Italy might not have much to offer in itself, it is perfectly located to discover other beautiful parts of Italy, such as Florence, Pisa and Cinque Terre .

The five towns of Cinque Terre; Manarola, Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monterosso, are a short 20-minute train away from La Spezia.

Whether you decide to adventure there alone or on an organised excursion from your cruise ship one day is plenty of time to see the five towns and walk at least part of the famous Sentiero Azzurro, the cliffside hiking trail that connects them.

Pisa and Florence are a bit further away, respectively about 1 hour and 2 hour drives away, but it is still possible to visit Tuscany on a day trip from La Spezia.

In Pisa you can admire the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and Piazza dei Miracoli.

In Florence you can explore the bustling central streets, visit the museum degli Uffizi, the Duomo cathedral and end the day watching the sunset over the rooftops of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo.

At the end of a long sightseeing day you can head back to your cruise ship for dinner and an evening show.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

Cagliari, Sardinia

Sardinia in Italy has the most beautiful beaches and water I have ever seen. If you’re looking for an awesome beach destination during your Mediterranean cruise, make sure Cagliari harbour features in your travel itinerary.

Personally I have only ever visited the north of Sardinia and the famous Archipelago of la Maddalena , known for it’s pristine white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise water.

I have heard the south and Cagliari are just as beautiful.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a popular cruise harbour thanks to its strategic location in the French Riviera.

When you visit Villefranche during a cruise you have the options of either enjoying the peaceful town of Villefranche, or doing a day trip to the most chaotic and bustling Nice.

Both are great depending on what you’re looking for. If you want to peacefully stroll along the harbour and get lost in the small side streets of colourful houses, Villefranche is for you.

If you want to experience life in the French Riviera head to Nice to check out the high-end fashion shops, trendy bars and tasty restaurants.

Best cruise ports in the Eastern Mediterranean

Dubrovnik is a personal favourite destination of mine. Located along the Dalmatian coast it’s the perfect location if you’re looking for an interesting historical Old Town, matched with stunning beaches with clear turquoise water.

I visited Dubrovnik on several occasions, both on cruise and not, and it’s easily one of my favourite cities in Croatia.

The most famous attraction in Dubrovnik is the walk on the Old Town walls, which takes around 2-3 hours depending on how many stops you do to take photos.

Dubrovnik is also the set of Game of Thrones (anyone recognised it as Kings Landing?) and you will find a number of Game of Thrones walking tours going on around the Old Town.

Add to that fun sunset kayaking tours, a cable car with epic views over Dubrovnik, beautiful beaches and great food, and you have one of the best cruise ports in the Mediterranean!

Another popular cruise destination in Croatia is Split . Similarly to Dubrovnik it is also blessed with a dramatic coastline, white sand and turquoise water beaches, and a historical Old Town.

Somewhat smaller than Dubrovnik the Old Town of Split will take less time to visit than in Dubrovnik, giving you more time to visit the surroundings areas.

Split is particularly famous as a great destination from which to go on day trips to Krka National Park, where you can go swimming in Krka waterfalls , Omis, where you can go zip lining in the Cetina canyon, and to Hvar and the surrounding islands.

If you’re looking for a city that will really add a touch of variety to your Mediterranean cruise, Split is the one.

For many cruises that visit the eastern Mediterranean Venice is the highlight of the trip, and rightly so.

The famous Italian city with its romantic canals, dreamy gondola rides and beautiful architecture makes every traveller that visits it fall in love. Venice is built on more than 100 islands, all connected by canals.

The city centre of Venice is entirely pedestrian, since there are no roads, there are no cars either! It’s the perfect destination to walk around the canals and get lost amongst the Renaissance and Gothic palaces.

Visiting Venice by cruise can be especially magical once you set off from the harbour, and cruise past the outskirts of Venice.

From the bridge of your cruise ship you’ll be able to see Piazza San Marco and the other highlights of Venice as you sail past.

Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor in Montenegro was one of my favourite places I visited during a cruise, which I had not expected to love that much.

The Old Town of Kotor is surrounded by fjord-like mountains, with stunning views over the town and cruise boats anchored in the middle of the fjords.

Everything from the natural landscape to the historical old town feels like you’ve stepped into another time and another world.

And the beauty doesn’t end when you leave Kotor, as you leave the port you still have a fair amount of time spent cruising in the fjords before you’re back in open sea.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 5 things I wish I'd known before sailing in the Mediterranean.

• I've been on 50 cruises around the world and took my first Mediterranean route last year.
• Picking the right time of the season to go can make a big difference in your trip.
• Before packing, I always check to see if any of the experiences I've booked have a dress code.

As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise .

The dreamy ships take passengers around European destinations like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

After taking my first Mediterranean cruise last year, here's what I think everyone should know before booking the route.

Going early or late in the sailing season means fewer crowds and better weather.

Many cruise lines, like Virgin, Celebrity, and Disney, start the Mediterranean season in early spring and sail through early fall.

Going early or late in the season usually means you'll have more tolerable weather and smaller crowds in some of the big destinations like Athens .

I made the mistake of going on my Mediterranean cruise at the end of May (over Memorial Day weekend).

Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills. I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour.

Arriving at your embarkation port early is key to having a smooth sailing.

My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts.

This gives you plenty of time to ensure you make it to the port, especially with the airline delays that typically spike in the summer. The boat isn't going to wait for you i f you don't land on time

Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me.

As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city.

Be sure to pack at least one shirt with sleeves and bottoms that cover your knees.

Some of the major European tourist destinations have strict dress codes — typically everyone must at least cover their shoulders and knees out of respect.

If you're planning on checking out Vatican Ci t y in Italy or the Meteora monasteries in Greece, b e sure to pack at least one outfit that fits the bill.

Most cruise ships have laundry services (self-serve or valet), so you can wear the same dress-code-approved outfit for a few excursion days if needed.

Food tours are a great way to see a city, taste local dishes, and learn some history.

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour . I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed.

Food tours can be booked through third-party travel operators, like TripAdvisor or Viator, and offer the chance to see some of the major landmarks of a city, try local dishes, and learn some history all in one outing.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship.

Consider booking tours through third-party sites.

Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies.

But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time.

For example, on my Mediterranean cruise last summer, the ship anchored at Cannes, and I was able to keep my eye on it throughout my excursion.

What is the best month to take a cruise? We broke it down by region.

Certain times of year may seem like no-brainers for travel, like spring break or summer vacation.

But the best times to take a cruise can vary depending on where you’re going.

Mike Harris, director of sales at online travel agency The Cruise Web , said there are “a lot of factors that go into any vacation, but especially one where you're traveling overseas, or if you're going to a destination that does have varying weather patterns.”

Other aspects like wildlife activity and pricing can also change throughout the year. Some places even have set seasons when cruise ships visit. We break down the best times to visit some of the most popular cruise destinations below.

When is the best time to take an Alaska cruise?

The Alaska cruise season runs from May through September, but the optimal window depends on your priorities, according to Harris.

“So, if you really wanted to see wildlife, which is a big reason why people want to go to Alaska, usually July is going to be the best for that,” he said. “It's when the bears are really active.”

Late June and August can also make for good wildlife viewing, said Deborah Banks, a travel adviser and franchise owner at Cruise Planners with her husband Isaiah.

May and September feature lower prices and colder temperatures, in the 50 to 60-degree range compared to the mid-60s to low 70s Harris estimated (though it can vary depending on where in Alaska you are). September is also “fantastic” for viewing fall foliage. “(There’s) colder weather, but you're getting some really cool, unique scenery later in the year too,” he said.

Banks warned that there can be drawbacks to going on the early or late side. “(The) early season may see some icy conditions, and late season may increase the chance of rougher seas and less predictable weather,” she said in an email. Some tourist services may not be fully operational.

When is the best time to take a Caribbean cruise?

While the Caribbean is a year-round cruise destination , December through April is the best time to go, according to Banks. “This is the dry season with calmer seas and more comfortable weather,” she said.

Harris echoed that, noting that winter is a particularly good time to take those sailings. “Chances are where you're coming from, it's very cold, so it's a good change of temperature,” he said. 

The Caribbean is also popular with families, so going outside of the summer months can mean more availability and better fares – though ships are likely to be crowded during other school holidays like spring and winter breaks.

Banks also recommended avoiding hurricane season, which runs from June through November. 

But operators can monitor for bad weather in advance, and ships have stabilizers that reduce the impact of rough waters, Harris noted. And unlike resorts on land, ships can reroute as needed. “The nice thing about cruising is that they can sail somewhere else,” he said.

When is the best time to take a Mediterranean cruise?

Banks said May through September offers “warm weather, calm seas, and plenty of sunshine.” That said, some of those months may not be your best bet if you don’t like the heat.

“It can definitely be super hot,” Harris said. “Like, if you go to Venice in July, you're gonna be sweating.” If you’re looking for milder temperatures, consider visiting as early as April or in October after fall rolls around.

But if you have your heart set on a voyage outside those months, don’t worry: ships cruise the Mediterranean the whole year. The region may see less predictable weather and rougher seas from November through March, but that “can vary by exact location,” Banks added.

When is the best time to take an Antarctica cruise?

Antarctica is an increasingly popular destination , but cruise ships only visit for about half the year.

The destination’s cruise season runs from October or November through March, encompassing its summer.

Even then, the weather can be highly unpredictable and the environment changes throughout the season. Travelers have a better shot at seeing penguin chicks starting in December.

“Outside of these months, the region is largely inaccessible to cruise ships because of extreme cold and ice buildup,” Banks said.

The only catch is that blackout dates apply – typically during holiday and school breaks.

It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech , or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Emerald Sakara — Emerald Cruises Arrow

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August, the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles. Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. Explora I — Explora Journeys Arrow

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where aging meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs—such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic—curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. Icon of the Seas — Royal Caribbean International Arrow

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map—forgetting your sunscreen, for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the specialty seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crew members dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From $2,249. —Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia — MSC Cruises Arrow

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the European cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details—this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Norwegian Viva — Norwegian Cruise Line Arrow

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima . There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over the top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Oceania Vista — Oceania Cruises Arrow

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilizers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience— Vista ’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley, and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul, Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Scenic Eclipse II — Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours Arrow

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse . Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs—and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Seabourn Pursuit — Seabourn Cruise Line Arrow

Pursuit is a small “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear—or damp Arctic expedition gear—in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style.
