The main reason families flock to Myrtle Beach is to swim in the mild waves and play along the 60 miles of coastline. Some spots along the Carolina shore offer opportunities for water sports like Jet Skiing or deep-sea fishing, while other areas are better for relaxing or playing with your children. You'll also find a few spots perfect for casting a line for a fresh catch.

However, there's more to Myrtle Beach than water-related activities. It has numerous golf courses, including several designed by famous golfers like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. It also has amusement parks, water parks and many nightlife options.

Although Myrtle Beach is littered with plenty of miniature golf courses, travelers say the most popular is the Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf course. As with a real mountain, you'll find yourself physically ascending as you putt through the holes, which vary in difficulty. The entire course features interesting obstacles like waterfalls and caves. The complex offers a total of 36 holes of mini-golf set in two courses, the Conch and the Minotaur. Plus, if you try for a hole-in-one at the 19th hole, you could win free games for life. Once you reach the 75-foot peak, you’ll enjoy a view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Recent visitors said the course provides affordable fun for the whole family after a long day at the beach and even offers lovely views. They also applaud the friendly staff and the cleanliness of the facility. A few warn that playing the courses requires climbing a lot of steps.

Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Located in the Broadway at the Beach complex, Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach is a popular stop for families who need a break from the beach. Other exhibits include Rio Amazon, featuring animals typical of tropical rain forests, and the Living Gallery, which shelters corals, weedy sea dragons and a giant octopus. Meanwhile, Friendship Flats allows hands-on interactions with some of the aquarium's creatures.

The aquarium also offers unique experiences (for additional fees) like indoor glass-bottom boat rides above the Dangerous Reef, penguin encounters and more. Recent visitors to the aquarium said it's an ideal place to spend the day when weather conditions make going to the beach difficult, but travelers do warn that you'll face more crowds on rainy days. Some visitors deem admission costs to be too high.

Fishing off the jetty and off the beach is a popular activity, as is bird-watching – a particular highlight for past visitors. Others also recommend visiting the castle for its history. In 1993, the band returned to the city where it got its start and opened the 2,000-seat Alabama Theatre in the Barefoot Landing shopping complex. The theater attracts well-known artists, including Three Dog Night, the Temptations and Josh Turner.

On nights when there is not a special guest performer, the theater offers performances of "ONE The Show," a variety show that includes comedy, country, gospel and rock music, among other genres. The Alabama Theatre's Christmas show is the most popular event: It runs from early November to late December. With the exception of the Christmas show, the theater tends to cater to older travelers, according to reviewers. Ticket prices depend on the show, but recent visitors said the shows are worth every penny. Myrtle Beach offers family activities, nature excursions, great seafood – and plenty of stretches of sand and surf, too © Getty Images

Wide, sandy and sun-drenched, the Grand Strand in South Carolina is a 60-mile stretch of captivating coastline.

This region offers 14 communities, each with its own personality – with Myrtle Beach as the charismatic center of gravity. Beachgoers have their pick of inviting shores, from crowded and lively to remote and quiet. Nature lovers are also spoiled for choice: salt marshes teem with wildlife, trails ribbon through maritime forests and botanical gardens bloom year-round. Fresh seafood abounds everywhere. And family fun, from putt-putt to zip lines, is a hallmark of the region.

If you only have a few days (and with the caveat that some attractions are only open in warmer months), here are some of the top things to do in and around Myrtle Beach.

Spend a day on the beach

Myrtle Beach is the anchor of the Grand Strand, and it’s the best bet for active beachgoers. Head here for water sports, oceanfront dining, Boardwalk shenanigans and summer festivals. Surfside Beach hugs the coast just south of Myrtle Beach. Also known as Family Beach, this two-mile stretch of sand has lifeguards, a gently sloping coastline and wacky golf-cart parades. It has also been recognized for its autism-friendly businesses .

Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park offer a more low-key experience as well as opportunities for hiking, camping and wildlife watching. Further south, Litchfield Beach earns loyal fans for its crowd-free coastline and relaxing small-town vibe. Neighbor Pawleys Island encourages all-day relaxing with its empty white-sand beaches, protective dunes and famous roped hammocks.

Ride the SkyWheel

This soaring landmark is no mere Ferris wheel. Rising 187ft above the downtown Boardwalk, the  SkyWheel offers 10-to-15-minute “flights” in 42 temperature-controlled gondolas, which each hold up to six passengers. Most of the gondolas are fully accessible and can accommodate wheelchairs and scooters, while more than one million LED lights wow onlookers during the dynamic evening light show.

Savor fresh seafood in Murrells Inlet

Twenty-five minutes south of Myrtle Beach, this inviting fishing village is known as the seafood capital of South Carolina. Fishing boats pull up beside waterfront restaurants in Murrells Inlet, where chefs await the day’s catch. Linked by the half-mile wooden MarshWalk, popular seafood restaurants overlook weathered piers and lush marshlands, and offer a prime choice for a lovely evening out. One sure bet for fresh seafood? Head to Wicked Tuna , a hook-to-plate seafood restaurant that overlooks the inlet and employs its own fleet of fishing boats.

Kayak the coast

Paddlers seeking wildlife, coastal beauty and solitude have numerous options within a short drive of downtown Myrtle Beach. Salt marshes hug the coast at Murrells Inlet, where kayak tours float past pelicans, egrets, sea turtles and dolphins. Other trips explore the swampy wonders of the Waccamaw River and its moss-draped cypress trees, or drift past lonely islands and empty beaches strewn with shells and sand dollars. Most guided trips are great for families and last a half-day, with many trips offered year-round.

Go shag dancing at Fat Harold’s

Shag dancing (known as “shagging” in these parts) is the official dance of South Carolina. According to lore, this easy-going swing dance akin to a slow jitterbug was birthed in North Myrtle Beach in the 1940s and 1950s, with doo-wop, old-time R&B and beach music providing the irresistible soundtrack. You can watch – and join in on – all the moves at Fat Harold’s Beach Club and surrounding dance clubs most nights of the week. Lessons at Fat Harold’s are $10 on Monday nights – no partner needed – and free every other Tuesday night.

Marvel at a Night of a Thousand Candles

The most enchanting place in the Palmetto State in winter is  Brookgreen Gardens , 16 miles south of Myrtle Beach. The Nights of a Thousand Candles take place from late November through the early New Year: after sunset, a tunnel of live oaks, all wrapped in strands of white lights, funnels visitors from the entrance to an illuminated wonderland of flowers, shrubs and trees. Statues of gods and goddesses cast mysterious shadows across fountains and pools in the twinkling darkness. These events sell out, so buy a ticket before your visit.

Horseback ride on the beach...and beyond

Horseback riding is allowed on designated sections of the Grand Strand from the third Saturday in November through the end of February. This means you can gallop – or perhaps gently walk – along the surf in winter. Most guided trips run 90 minutes and cost about $75;  Grand Strand Horseback Riding leads outings from Myrtle Beach State Park . In warmer months, when the beaches are off-limits to horses, many companies guide riders across inland farms, where you might see cows and canals instead of sand and surf.

A fence in the dunes along the Boardwalk of Myrtle Beach at dusk, with the SkyWheel and apartment buildings in the distance

Stroll the Boardwalk

Anchored by the SkyWheel, the 1.2-mile Boardwalk is crammed with arcade games, ice cream parlors, souvenir shops, volleyball courts, beachwear stores and busy hotels. The all-American scene is not to be missed in summer, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Officially dubbed the Oceanfront Boardwalk & Promenade, the walkway stretches from the 2nd Ave pier area to 14th Ave North. The family-owned Gay Dolphin gift shop, open continuously for 75 years, hawks shells, t-shirts and souvenirs. RipTydz Oceanfront Grille & Rooftop Bar serves up cocktails with ocean views.

Bird-watch at Huntington Beach State Park

Scan the skies and salt marshes for great egrets, blue herrings and even bald eagles at Huntington Beach State Park , a favorite stopover for migrating birds and one of the top birding spots in the Southeast. Birdwatchers have spotted more than 350 species of birds at this 2500-acre park, which is home to maritime forests, freshwater and brackish marshes, shrub thickets, beaches and dunes. Pick up a bird checklist then stroll the marsh-flanked Causeway for the best viewing. The new Nature Center also has a birding area.

Seek out high-octane adventures for families

Smell the popcorn, hear the screams and feel the ocean breeze on the Swamp Fox, a classic wooden roller coaster that careens around Family Kingdom , an oceanfront amusement park packed tight with 35 rides. Funplex Myrtle Beach , which opened in 2021 at the northern end of the Boardwalk, has seven rides including the Sky Velocity, which drops riders six stories. At the beach, several family members can float above the ocean at once on parasailing trips – reaching heights of up to 500ft. Below, jet skis bounce across the waves with banana boats in tow as families cling tight.

Wander through WonderWorks

This eye-catching, upside-down building is the hub of this three-in-one attraction , an immersive adventure destination that is one part children’s museum, one part amusement park and one part science lab. Various interactive “wonder zones” bring scientific concepts to life, while the outdoor Soar + Explore area boosts the adrenaline factor with a zip line and three-level ropes course. WonderWorks is not unique to Myrtle Beach, but its mix of interactive physical and cerebral activities provides a fun alternative to a day of lying out in the sun.

A woman puts at a mini-golf course next to a palm tree and fiberglass elephant in Myrtle Beach

Putt-putt with pirates and dinosaurs

Rome has ruins. London has pubs. And Myrtle Beach has mini-golf courses, with at last count more than 50 of them puttin’ their stuff (sorry). Some sources even say that the Grand Strand has more courses per square mile than any place in the country. What makes these 18-hole courses memorable? Their exuberant embrace of wacky themes. Pirate ships, dinosaur kingdoms, jungle wonderlands and Hawaiian backdrops have entertained families since the first course was built here in 1930. No ifs, ands, or...putts about it.

Immerse yourself in Gullah culture

Even after the brutal Middle Passage, enslaved workers on coastal South Carolina plantations retained many traditions from their West African homelands. Delve into this rich history, memorable customs and beautiful crafts in the coastal village of Georgetown, home to the Gullah Museum and the Rice Museum.

Zenobia Harper offers tours exploring Gullah culture several days per week at Hopsewee Plantation, a former rice-growing estate on the North Santee River. Workshops here teach sweetgrass basket weaving, a Gullah tradition since the 1700s. Brookgreen Gardens, built on the site of four former rice plantations, offers a weekly Gullah program (Jan–Nov). The Lowcountry Trail here spotlights the lives of those who owned and worked the fields.

Hit up Broadway on the Beach

With its unabashed embrace of shiny corporate excess, Broadway at the Beach may not offer an afternoon of Lowcountry authenticity. But this sprawling shopping, dining and entertainment complex – which surrounds a 23-acre lake – knows how to bring the rah-rah. Highlights include a lake-crossing zip line, the Pavilion Nostalgia Park carousel, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, dueling pianos at Crocodile Rocks and Ripley’s Aquarium, where penguins and the jellyfish beckon.

Sip craft beer

The outdoor beer garden at Crooked Hammock Brewery in North Myrtle Beach embraces backyard fun with hammocks, firepits, bocce ball, cornhole and a playground. Grand Strand Brewing Co, which opened in 2021, fills a two-story building in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. Enjoy live music and outdoor seating (including Adirondack chairs and picnic tables) as you sip an Airbrush Hazy IPA. Serious beer samplers will want to make the one-mile drive inland for the Dirty Myrtle DIPA at hyperlocal brewery New South Brewery, around since 1998.

Every tourist town needs a wax museum, and Myrtle Beach is no exception with its Hollywood House of Wax. You'll have no trouble spotting it off Highway 17; just look for King Kong swinging off the Empire State Building.

Inside the wax museum are eerily lifelike wax figures of Hollywood's most famous actors, including Clint Eastwood, Duane Johnson (aka The Rock), and others. You can also get onstage with some of today's most notable musicians and hold a trophy with NASCAR heroes.

The Hollywood House of Wax is located in the Broadway at the Beach complex.

The Bowery

After a tough day of lying out in the sun and frolicking in the waves, you may feel the need to do a bit of line dancing at the famous Bowery Club. Fortunately you don't need to wander far. This iconic country music hot spot, in operation since 1944, is only 50 feet from the water's edge.

The music starts each night at around 8:30pm and runs until late into the evening. Many of today's top country bands have graced the stage at the Bowery. In fact Alabama, one of the top grossing country bands, was the house band for seven years in the late 1970s.

Myrtle Beach State Park

For sun, surf, and sand in a natural setting, head to Myrtle Beach State Park. Here, you and your family will be able to escape the crowds and enjoy the beach as it once was before it was developed with large resorts and hotels. This one-mile stretch of oceanfront is backed by maritime forests, where you'll find a short hiking trail and one of the best campgrounds in South Carolina .

Bring your fishing rod if you intend to visit. The fishing off the nearby Myrtle Beach Pier is considered very good by those in the know. Alternatively just take a leisurely stroll to the end, and soak up the wonderful views up and down the coastline, or get up early and watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean.

Camping at Myrtle Beach State Park is an affordable option versus staying at a hotel in town. Pick one of the 278 sites, set up camp, and be lulled to sleep at night by the waves washing gently ashore. If sleeping on the ground isn't your thing, book into one of the six historic cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

We recommend these great-value oceanfront hotels and resorts in Myrtle Beach:

  • Marriott's OceanWatch Villas at Grande Dunes : luxury beachfront high-rises, ocean-view pools, two-bedroom suites with kitchens, barbecue area.

21. Mt. Atlanticus Miniature Golf

Mt. Atlanticus Miniature Golf

Mt. Atlanticus Miniature Golf

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a haven of miniature golf courses, but none are quite as popular or fun as Mt. Atlanticus Miniature Golf .

It is designed similarly to a mountain, making you climb higher and higher in order to continue making your way through each hole of varying difficulty.

This is because the golf course is actually on Mt. Atlanticus, rising 75 feet into the air!

There are 36 holes across two courses at Mt. Atlanticus Miniature Golf.

One is called the Minotaur and the other is called the Conch.

Both are tiki-themed and fit the tropical, beachside vibe of many other Myrtle Beach attractions, with cottages and huts that provide stunning panoramas of the Atlantic Ocean.

Try scoring a hole-in-one at the final hole – if you do, you’ll win a lifetime of free games!

Even if you don’t win, the rates are reasonable and the all-day pass offers an affordable way to get in a long day of golfing.

22. Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum

Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum

Bill Tavui / Shutterstock

The Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum began its life as its name suggests – a school in the segregation area meant for the attendance of black students.

It was in operation from 1923 to 1958.

During this time, most young black Americans were unable to go to school, forcing them to instead learn in local churches.

The Colored School and many other institutions like it were created to provide educational spaces for black Americans.

They were fitted with only the absolute bare minimum of features, with just enough space for their students and barely suitable amenities for them.

This school in particular had only four rooms despite serving students from grade one to eight.

Segregation was abolished in the 1950s, and as time went on, this school was closed and converted into a warehouse.

When it started to fall apart, it was slated for demolition, but some former students formed a committee to save it and preserve it as a reminder of the painful, hateful past of the nation.

Though its name is the subject of some controversy today, the Colored School Museum refuses to change it, proudly displaying the reality of history and refusing to sugarcoat its past.

It offers a glimpse into life for black students in America back in the day, with a restored version of one of its first classrooms and many photos and newspaper excerpts that tell its story.

Now, the Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum isn’t just important as one of South Carolina’s educational places to visit.

It’s also valuable to the community as an adult education center.

Address: 900 Dunbar St, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, United States

Located at the southern end of Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach State Park features 2,500 acres of hiking trails, marshes, bays, and opportunities for overnight camping.

Sip the day away at a nearby winery

Duplin Winery at North Myrtle Beach is a great place to sample a variety of vintages while enjoying cheese, crackers, and a virtual tour of its Rose Hill, North Carolina, home base. As part of the tour, you'll have a chance to hand-bottle your own wine to take home. Nearby, Carolina Vineyards Winery , located near the Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach, offers a variety of tastings, including frozen wine during the summer.

Or try local beers at a microbrewery

New South Brewing , a microbrewery in Myrtle Beach that's been open since 1998, features ales, lagers, IPAs, and seasonal specialties such as Oktoberfest and Dark Star Porter. Nearby, Tidal Creek Brewhouse focuses on small-batch craft beers and also serves freshly brewed coffee and Lowcountry food favorites (think fried green tomatoes, burgers, and chicken wings) in a friendly atmosphere.

Geek out over classic cars

Classic car lovers can geek out over all their favorite models at the  Wheels of Yesteryear Vintage Automobile Museum . Open in Myrtle Beach since 2009, the museum showcases a collection of more than 150 American-made cars and trucks that husband-and-wife founders Paul and Carol Cummings have been assembling over decades. Visit the gift shop to pick up nostalgic die-cast collectible versions of your favorite vehicles, plus T-shirts and other car-centric souvenirs.

Learn about wildlife at Ripley's Aquarium

Courtesy of Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Don't miss  Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach ; not only is it a wonderful place to view sea creatures like stingrays up close, but also sloths and other South American critters. Check the website before you go to book additional experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours of the Marine Science Center, penguin encounters, glass-bottom boat rides, sleepover parties, or the ever-popular Breakfast With a Mermaid.

Embrace your inner pirate

Get ready to don cheesy pirate gear and practice your best "Arrrrrrr!" Myrtle Beach — and the entire Carolina coast for that matter — was once a haven for Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and heaps of other infamous pirates back in the day, so why not get in on some family-friendly pirate action on a themed cruise while you're in town? Blackbeard’s Pirate Cruise  and  Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach each offer kid-friendly sailings complete with temporary pirate tattoos, fake pirate mustaches, costumes for the kiddos, stories about those who once sailed through these waters, and a treasure-seeking adventure that ends in an epic water cannon battle.

Cruise down the intracoastal on a riverboat

If you'd like to enjoy a boat ride that's a little less pirate-y, you can always opt to cruise down the Intracoastal Waterway on a  Barefoot Queen riverboat instead. This premier North Myrtle Beach attraction offers several indoor and outdoor decks to spread out on, with onboard narration and entertainment, as well as a fully stocked bar to enjoy while you take in views of the surrounding area. Scenic daytime and lunch cruises are 1.5 hours long, while dinner cruises are slightly longer at two hours.

Master the waves at Kokopelli Surf Camp

Pick up a new beach hobby at Kokopelli Surf Camp , which has group or private lessons designed for every level, whether you're just starting out or want to brush up your skills. Three-day camp sessions are also offered for kids, while surfboard rentals are available if you'd rather do your own thing.

Experience early-1900s farm life

Part of the Horry County Museum, the L.W. Paul Living History Farm  lets you see what it was like to live in the area as a farmer between 1900 and 1955. Demonstrations and presentations change seasonally according to what's happening on the farm. Guided tours are free and last roughly one hour, so it's worth checking out if you're suddenly craving a little time away from the beach.

Tour a popular local distillery

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Twelve 33 Distillery for a chance to see how some of your favorite spirits are created "from grain to glass," and how locally sourced ingredients make the craft cocktails served here really stand out. Among the distillery's specialties are several types of rye whiskey, spiced rum, vodka, and gin with ties to South Carolina's prohibition era. Pro tip: Book the VIP Tour to enjoy a special tasting flight in the distillery's secret speakeasy.

Broadway Grand Prix is popular amongst holiday parties wanting a few hours of fun. Groups of friends will especially love being able to race each other around the tracks, and it is a great attraction if you love a bit of competition.

8. The Carolina Opry

things to do in Myrtle Beach Carolina Opry

Carolina Opry is Myrtle Beach’s most famous and popular live music theater. It was also the city’s first theater and remained the only theater for a long seven-year period. Even now, the Carolina Opry is the home of live music and theater in Myrtle Beach.

If you love live entertainment, catching a show is one of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach. You can find a line-up of amazing live music acts that sing a mixture of country songs and pop cult classics. Shows are pretty regular, but it is worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment – especially if you are visiting for a short time or during peak season. The venue is stunning and worth visiting just to experience the design and atmosphere alone.

Things to do in Myrtle Beach Hollywood Wax Museum

If you haven’t been to a wax museum before, you are in for a treat. Hollywood Wax Museum is South Carolina’s take on Madame Tussauds, and the museum is full of life-like wax replicas of celebs. You could be posing next to Eminem or Al Pacino. We love the range of celebrities and the amazingly detailed backdrops around the figures.

Hollywood Wax Museum is one of the best Myrtle Beach activities on a wet day. You can easily spend a couple of hours wandering through the halls and amongst the statues.

11. Brookgreen Gardens

things to do in Myrtle Beach Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens is a 9,100-acre sculpture garden and wildlife preserve located just outside of Murrells Inlet, around a 30 minutes drive from Myrtle Beach. The gardens are a stunning bit of green space to visit. In fact, TripAdvisor recognizes Brookgreen Gardens as one of the top ten gardens in the US.

On a sunny day, strolling through the themed garden is utter bliss. The gardens have over 2,000 artwork pieces, and you can easily spend two hours exploring the grounds. Keep your eyes peeled for any alligators as well, since you can occasionally see them basking in quiet areas of ponds around the gardens.

12. Take a boat tour

Out of all the Myrtle Beach tours you could take, a boat tour should be in your top three. A harbor cruise is always a fantastic thing to do – no matter which city you visit. And Myrtle Beach is particularly well-suited to some exciting boat tours.

You could take a two-hour tour down the Intracoastal Waterway to spot dolphins. You could also sail around the Murrells Inlet to spot marshland wildlife or even sail upstream on a pontoon boat before tubing. Once you’ve explored Myrtle Beach on land, definitely book an experience to explore its surrounding ocean and rivers. There are plenty of options.

13. Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk

Things to do in Myrtle Beach Murrells Inlet

Speaking of Murrells Inlet, its Marsh Walk is easily one of the most scenic things to do in the Myrtle Beach area. The wooden boardwalk stretches just half a mile yet overlooks a natural saltwater estuary. Visitors are sandwiched between fishing boats and dozens of restaurants selling fantastic seafood.

There’s plenty of nature, though, and it is not just a commercialized boardwalk. You should spot sting rays, crabs, and lots of pelicans. There is even a group of goats living in a nearby paddock. Walking along the Marsh Walk is a great way to spend a breezy morning, especially if you want to find a nice restaurant for lunch afterward.

14. Pavilion Park

Pavilion Park is actually located inside Broadway at the Beach. However, it is such an attraction in its own right that we’ve given it a slot of its own. Pavilion Park is a traditional amusement park with attractions like a carousel and Ferris wheel. It is split between a fun park and an action park and has rides to get you screaming and rides sedate enough for younger guests.

The family-friendly park operates on a ticket basis, with tickets bought in bulk and then exchanged at each ride. For a traditional seaside experience, it is one of the best things to do in the city.

15. Surfside Beach

Things to do in Myrtle Beach Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is a small beach town south of Myrtle Beach’s city center. Its beach, also named Surfside Beach, is one of the best sandy beaches that the area offers. It has the nickname ‘the family beach’ and is known for its quieter and friendlier atmosphere than Myrtle Beach.

If you are looking for family-friendly beach days, this beach is a great choice. And, if you want to escape the crowds, Surfside is said to be slightly less touristy and cleaner. Surfside has a wonderful community feel and seemingly endless sands for beach sports and sunbathing – what’s not to love?

16. Go jet skiing

things to do in Myrtle Beach Jet Skiing

Myrtle Beach offers a lot of watersports; it is no secret. However, jet skiing is easily one of the best of all the Myrtle Beach watersports you could pick. Zooming along the coastline at up to 45 miles per hour is adrenaline-inducing and an exciting way to sightsee.

You can rent a jet ski at numerous places in Myrtle Beach and its surrounding areas. You can also choose to take a jet ski tour. On a tour, a licensed instructor guides you up the coastline. This is the best option if you want a guided sightseeing experience and someone on hand to help if you get confused with operating the jet ski.

17. Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament

things to do in Myrtle Beach Medieval Times

Fancy an experience that is slightly different? The Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament offers a two-hour live tournament, full of exciting events like jousting, horsemanship, and falconry. Afterwards, you’ll have a four-course feast to enjoy.

The experience is pretty much the best of both worlds. You’ll have immersive, historical entertainment and delicious food as well – dining in an expertly designed castle hall. Ready to book your ticket? Check the schedule as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. The experience runs most nights at 5 pm, but this is liable to change. Fun Fact, Deb worked at Medieval Times in Toronto for exactly one night when she was younger. It wasn’t the job for her.

18. Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum

Things to do in Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum

If you are an arcade game lover, don’t hesitate to head to the Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum. The museum is an arcade lover’s dream. Full of retro machines, the museum allows visitors all-you-can-play access to some of the most exciting and famous games.

The Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum has over 25 games, and the entrance fee is relatively modest. You don’t need tokens or coins to play at each machine, so you’ll only pay at the door. A visit is a fun way to liven up your day, especially on a wet day or quiet morning.

19. Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf

Myrtle Beach is not short of beautiful golf courses. You don’t have to be pro to enjoy a quick golfing session, though – especially when you have Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Goff. Why don’t you swap a real golf course for one of South Carolina’s top mini golf courses?

Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Goff is one of the city’s best miniature golf courses and one of the most fun things to do in Myrtle Beach. The mini golf course is tiki-themed, with lush greenery and many water features. You can challenge yourself and your friends to complete the course in the fewest shots.

20. North Myrtle Beach

things to do in Myrtle Beach North

North Myrtle Beach is just a 30-minute drive from Myrtle Beach city center. Visiting the neighboring city is one of the best day trips from Myrtle Beach, and it has a nine-mile-long beach with plenty of water activities. Whether you’ll be bringing the whole family or venturing as a solo traveler, everyone can enjoy a glorious beach day here. Grand Strand has some of the  best beaches in the US , and North Myrtle does not let it down.

Swim, sunbathe, or splurge on water activities – it is up to you. Paragliding, kayaking, and sailing are popular options if you want to get adventurous. North Myrtle Beach offers a lot of exciting ways to spend a day.

21. Pirates Voyage

How does combining delicious Myrtle Beach food and live entertainment sound? Out of all our favorite tourist attractions, Pirates Voyage ticks a unique box. The experience includes a live pirate show and a four-course meal. Visitors are seated in a full-sized pirate ship inside an indoor lagoon.

If this sounds like a whirlwind experience, it really is. There is everything – from cutlass fights to mermaids. If you needed more persuading, the company is owned by Dolly Parton. Yes, Dolly Parton, the queen of country music! The performance isn’t just limited to singing, though, and includes acrobatics, dancing, and a story unraveling around you.

22. WonderWorks Myrtle Beach

Things to do in Myrtle Beach South Carolina Wonderworks

For our final amusement park in this guide, we thought we’d better go out with a bang. WonderWorks Myrtle Beach is an attraction that stands out. The park has a mixture of over a hundred science exhibits, including an Extreme Weather Zone, Physical Challenge Zone, and a 6D motion ride. You could be experiencing the winds of a hurricane or laying on a bed of nails – be prepared to be pushed to your limit. WonderWorks tackles science in an educational, fast-paced way – making it the perfect place to spend half a day.

You’ll soon spot WonderWorks. The building is an upside-down house, and you’ll understand how quirky the attraction is from the get-go.

23. Duplin Winery

This attraction is for adults. Duplin Winery is the ‘oldest and largest winery in the south’ and a great place to experience wine tasting in South Carolina. The winery is just a 20-minute drive from Myrtle Beach city center (although we recommend booking a taxi). If you love fine wine and dining, visiting is one of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach.

Book a tasting session and spend a glorious afternoon sipping on sweet wines. The cheeseboards and tasting snacks are carefully matched and worth treating yourself to as well. Wine tasting at Duplin Winery is one of the most fun, indulgent things to do in Myrtle Beach.

24. Myrtle Beach SkyWheel

Things to do in Myrtle Beach South Carolina Skywheel

Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is a much-loved part of the city’s skyline. The wheel is 200 feet above sea level, providing stunning views over Myrtle Beach and its surrounding areas. Visitors sit in air-conditioned pods for the duration of the ride, admiring the scenery and novelty of the experience.

Even better? The SkyWheel is just a short walk from many other attractions since it is located on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. The wheel stays running until late at night, so it is a romantic after-dark activity, well-timed after a sunset walk along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. At night, the SkyWheel also lights up – a beautiful sight.

25. fishing tours

Things to do in Myrtle Beach Fishing Tour

So, we’ve covered boat tours, surf fishing, and even pier fishing. But we’ve missed one of the most special Myrtle Beach tours. If you love your fishing (or just want to give it a go), we highly recommend taking a deep-sea fishing tour.

I’ll never forget going with my parents on a fishing tour in Myrtle Beach. I hated catching the fish and when one landed on my hook I tried to ignore it. My dad was not happy with me. He ended up reeling it in, and we ate it for dinner.

These tours take you out into the Atlantic Ocean, providing equipment and expertise to help you get your catches. The experience is once in a lifetime for many. Even amongst the seasoned fishermen, it is sure to be a memorable day. Who knows, maybe you’ll catch something massive.

26. Ripley’s Aquarium

things to do in Myrtle Beach Ripleys Aquarium

While we are always on the fence about Aquariums, Ripley’s Aquarium is one of the top things to do in Myrtle Beach for families. They say their mission is to “provide a top quality, world class aquatic life facility that will foster environmental education, conservation, and research, while simultaneously providing entertainment for visitors of all ages.”

The aquarium houses over 10,000 sea creatures across multiple floors. You can walk through a glass tunnel, themed rooms like Rio Amazon Rainforest.

I do believe that our oceans are dying and that conservation needs to take place in wildlife preserves, but I am not a fan of places that offer petting areas like Ray Bay at Ripley’s. Some people argue that aquariums have hands-on demonstrations to educate children and let them appreciate the wildlife, but we have no idea what kind of stress that puts on the animal. However, Ripleys Aquariums are fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. In today’s world as habitat is dwindling, you can choose either way if you think aquariums are for you or not.

27. Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum

Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is a beautiful space. Its name might be a mouthful, but its display of predominately southern art is incredibly thought-provoking. You can admire many pieces, from decorative surfboards to suspended dolphin sculptures. The museum hosts a mixture of permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibits.

There is even a library and classroom space for you to explore. While if you are feeling creative, you can drop by the pottery studio. Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is forward-moving and constantly adapting. If you want an interesting art-related attraction in Myrtle Beach, it is the gallery for you.

28. New South Brewing

things to do in Myrtle Beach new south brewing

Not a fan of wine? Another of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach is coming your way – New South Brewing microbrewery. The microbrewery has been creating delicious ales and lagers since 1998. It is one of the best breweries to visit in South Carolina.

You can visit the brewery to sample the different beverages in the taproom. Of course, you may wish to order some to enjoy for the rest of your stay in Myrtle Beach. New South Brewing has a lot on offer. You could sample a White Ale, On the Beach, or even a Dirty Myrtle. New South Brewing is a fun activity in Myrtle Beach, regardless of what you pick.

29. Visit River Island

Things to do in Myrtle Beach River Island

Picturing a private island? You are in luck. River Island Adventures is a remote outpost on the Waccamaw River. It grants visitors access to a 48-acre private island in the middle of the river. You can camp, explore, kayak, and tube around the island – it is honestly an adventurer’s heaven. And when you want some downtime, there are tree swings, fire pits, and hammocks where you can rest and rejuvenate.

River Island Adventures is just a 30-minute drive from the center of Myrtle Beach. It is worth allocating two days to camp there overnight, as the overnight element adds so much more to your experience.

A great way to get on the water is SUP. You can book this guided Stand Up Paddle Board Tour to spot wildlife in either Murrells inlet or the Waccamaw River. There are sunrise and sunset tour and multiple departures throughout the day.

30. Warbird Park

Things to do in Myrtle Beach Warbird Park

Warbird Park is a stunning green space dedicated to the US Airforce. It is situated in the Market Common, a popular area in Myrtle Beach. You can walk between memorials to serving members of the air force and pass retired fight jets – which are now grounded for all to see at various spots in the park.

If you have close connections or are interested in the air force and planes, it is well worth visiting Warbird Park. The park is free to enter, so the experience suits travelers on all budgets. Keep an eye out for the 9/11 memorial as city officials relocated the monument to Warbird Park.

31. Backstage Mirror Maze

Things to do in Myrtle Beach Backstage Mirror Maze

Visiting Backstage Mirror Maze is one of the funniest, most lighthearted things to do in Myrtle Beach. Mirror Maze is exactly what it sounds like; a massive maze of mirrors. You’ll have to concentrate on spotting the actual path forwards, as the mirrors’ reflections create false paths and confusion.

The Mirror Maze is located in an old theater-style building, and the maze is brightly lit in bright, funky colors. If you want a laugh, completing the Mirror Maze is an ideal addition to your itinerary. It is family-friendly, yet also not exclusive to parents and children. Visitors of any age will love the challenge.

32. Wheels of Yesteryear

Car enthusiasts, you will love this one. Wheels of Yesteryear is a huge automotive museum full of vintage cars and memorabilia. Visitors can wander through the museum admiring the exhibitions and snapping photos next to dreamy vehicles of the past.

Allow at least an hour to explore the museum, if not longer. There is a small gift shop to drop by after you’ve finished looking around. You may be tempted to pick up a smaller collectible as a memory of your visit.

Myrtle Beach FAQs

things to do in myrtle beach South Carolina FAQ

Now that we’ve covered all the best things to do in Myrtle Beach, there’s some critical information that you should know. From how to get to Myrtle Beach to where to stay, these are the most common Myrtle Beach FAQS.

How to get to Myrtle Beach

How to get to Myrtle Beach South Carolina

The easiest way to reach Myrtle Beach is to fly. Myrtle Beach International Airport is located3 miles outside the city – making it an easy Uber or taxi ride from the airport to your accommodation . Flying is best for international visitors and those with less time on their hands, just wanting to get to Myrtle Beach quickly with minimal hassle.

Of course, you may wish to look at alternative options if you have longer to get to Myrtle Beach and are traveling domestically. South Carolina is ideally located for a  north-to-south road trip, so you could always use Myrtle Beach as a stopover destination in a bigger adventure. You may also wish to just take a road trip to Myrtle Beach as a final destination. Getting around Myrtle Beach

Getting around Myrtle Beach South Carolina

Getting around the Myrtle Beach area isn’t exactly easy in the sense that everything is within walking distance. The city sprawls lengthways and runs into neighboring cities like North Myrtle Beach. However, the city is well-connected by a network of highways, The Coast RTA bus system, and many taxis and Ubers. If you rent or bring a car, you’ll have no issues getting around the Myrtle Beach area. And if not, you can use a mixture of walking and public transport to get around.

While the city itself is not walkable, the promenade region is – which is worth knowing if you plan to spend a holiday mainly on the beach. Having visited every year for over 50 and having a second residence for 10 years, we feel versed in all things Myrtle Beach and hope your family loves it as much as we do.

Day One: Up and Running

Begin your day in Myrtle Beach with a delicious breakfast at Croissants Bakery & Bistro ! Dig into their tasty Chicken & Waffles, Crab Cake Benedict, Shrimp & Grits, or maybe even the sweet Bananas Foster French Toast!

Afterward, take some time to enjoy what this beautiful beach city has to offer. Relax on the coastline and lounge by the pool. Or, visit unique attractions like Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center, where you can check out an interactive wax museum and experience a mirror maze and zombie apocalypse adventure.

Then, head to  Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach  – home to over 6,000 aquatic animals such as sharks, piranha, and jellyfish. Get up close with Penguin encounters and Stingray experiences that will make lasting memories!

Enjoy a delicious lunch from Melt (hand-crafted grilled sandwiches), King Kong Sushi (voted best in town), or Wahlburgers for gourmet burgers with a side of tots flight.

Visiting the Myrtle Beach Popular Spots

Enjoy an evening of exploration at  Broadway at the Beach , Myrtle Beach’s lively shopping, dining, and entertainment hub. After you find something special to take home from one of its over 100 shops, enjoy people-watching while soaking up the coastal scenery.

To cap it off, plan dinner at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, where your exotic appetizers rock out alongside blaring Buffet tunes, topped off by top-shelf margaritas. Landry’s Seafood and Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen are other tasty choices.

Landry’s has excellent crab cakes and oyster bar trash (blackened shrimp, crab, rice, and lemon butter), while Paula Deen’s classic Southern fare is guaranteed to satisfy. If you’ve never tried Paula’s  baked Mac and cheese , you don’t know what you are missing!

Save room for a slice of Ooey-Gooey butter cake.

If you’re looking for a late-night activity, play a round of mini golf at  Captain Hook Adventure Golf  or high-tech golf at TOPGOLF. My family always said that you only pick mini-golf courses with blue water scenery, and this one fits the bill.

Day Two: Shop, Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

Our Myrtle Beach adventure continues with breakfast at Johnny D’s , home to delicious varieties of waffle creations like Red Velvet, Funfetti Cinnaroll, or Banana Split! Don’t forget the classic Benedict options for a scrumptious start to your day.

Then it’s shopping time:  Tanger Outlets  offers an array of stores from Disney Outlet and Simply Southern to Tory Burch – shop ’til you drop! Lastly, take in spectacular lake views while exploring  Barefoot Landing , a unique complex that captivated visitors long before Broadway at the Beach came around.

At Barefoot Landing, you’ll find a unique experience guaranteed to surprise and delight. From the Mole Hole to Tiki Jims’ island oasis of fun souvenirs, there are plenty of opportunities for an unforgettable shopping spree. And don’t miss the year-round Christmas Mouse – one visit just won’t be enough.

You’ve probably worked up a hunger from all that shopping. River City Cafe offers delectable burgers and fries, while Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina is perfect for satisfying taco cravings. Enjoy a meal al fresco at either spot before completing your day with a sweet Muscadine deluxe wine tasting from Duplin Winery!

This is one of my favorite activities on our Myrtle Beach itinerary.

Alligators and Australian Grille

If wine is not your thing, explore Alligator Adventure , the Reptile Capital of the World, and feast your eyes on 800 alligators and 230 other exotic species.

Then, whet your appetite for dinner with  Greg Norman Australian Grille  at Barefoot Landing. This is Myrtle Beach’s premier steak & seafood restaurant for over 16 years. Try one (or two!) signature dishes like Hot Crab Dip or Lamb Lollipops before heading off to House of Blues.

You can enjoy some late-night live music while browsing their super cool gift shop with memorabilia.

If you’re looking for a night of entertainment, there’s no better place than the Calvin Gilmore Theater! Enjoy classic performances like  The Carolina Opry  and  Time Warp  – featuring all your favorite 60s, 70s & 80s music hits. And if it happens to be November or December while you visit Myrtle Beach, don’t miss out on their annual Christmas Special.

Day 3: Sightseeing Downtown Myrtle

Maybe sleeping in late and spending more beach time is something that speaks louder today. There couldn’t be a better morning to do just that. But, if you’re ready to hit the ground running, have breakfast at the Spring Garden Family Restaurant. It’s a traditional pancake house serving all of your breakfast favorites.

Explore  the Boardwalk Entertainment District  (“the heart of Myrtle Beach”) today. Walk on the 1.2-mile boardwalk, shopping and enjoying the ocean views and mist. Some of the many attractions in this part of town include Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Odditorium, Moving Theater, and Haunted Adventure.

myrtle-beach-boardwalk

Don’t miss walking through the legendary  Gay Dolphin Gift Cove  for an eclectic mix of treasures—some 70,000. The Gay Dolphin is open from 9:30 AM to midnight weekly. As a child, I had a small win by finding a souvenir license plate with my name on it—Melody—not an easy task.

Step aboard SkyWheel —a luxurious 200-foot observation wheel overlooking stunning views from atop its glass windows and doors…trust me when I say it will be worth every second.

myrtle-beach-skywheel

Dive into nostalgia when you visit the open-air Fun Plaza Family Fun Center, where classic arcade games (think Pac-Man, Skee Ball, and pinball) and retro mirror mazes take center stage. And if country or rock & roll are more your style, The Bowery is the place to go. It’s an institution that gave Alabama their start!

Fun Fact : Locals may share stories of what used to be at 9th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard: 11 acres worth of fun, known simply by this name – Myrtle Beach Pavilion!

Downtown Myrtle Beach Dining

For those looking for unique lunch options while they explore Myrtle Beach downtown, ART Burger Sushi Bar serves up sushi with a creative twist, as well as delicious burgers crafted from ingredients such falafel, black beans, tuna, and turkey.

Landshark Bar and Grill is a Jimmy Buffet concept with seafood, sandwiches, and burgers.

Visit TinRoof Music Joint , located beachfront, and boasting an incredible rooftop patio, for pub grub. Sink your teeth into the Nashville Hot Chicken and enjoy the live music for a laid back night.

If seafood is more your taste, take yourself to Sea Captain’s House – voted best in town by Southern Living Magazine – and reminiscent of a 1930s cottage with delicious dishes.

Day 4: Get Outdoors

Kick off the morning with an adventurous kayak ecotour through Black River Outdoors ; we suggest taking on the salt marsh tour, but you can also choose from fishing trips or swamp tours as well. All equipment is provided, just wear appropriate clothes, water shoes, and bring lots o sunscreen!

Grab your friends or family and head to The Market Common – a 114-acre “lifestyle center” bursting with energy, for a super fun day Shop till you drop (Chico’s Anthropologie, Pottery Barn), catch the newest blockbuster flick at Grand 14 Cinema, or try one of the 60 craft beers on tap at The Brass Tap.

Renting a Pedego E-bike is also an exciting way to cruise around the Market Common property in style.

Don’t forget lunch either – Nacho Hippo serves up crazy fun Hip Fries (queso, roasted pork, banana peppers, and pico).

For more thrills throw yourself into Backstage Mirror Maze or bravely tackle some waves while riding the high seas aboard the Beach Rider Jet Boat thrill ride!

Fan Favorite Myrtle Beach Eateries

For those looking for a delicious and luxurious dining experience, look no further than Hook & Barrel. With its swanky setting and nautical theme, this eatery offers up some of the most exquisite seafood dishes you can find. My favorite is the Smoked Shrimp & Grits.

For families eager for something more casual, yet still generous portions at value prices, Ultimate California Pizza is your best bet coming fresh off the #1 favorite pizzeria’ title.

Day 5 : A Dose of Nature and Amazing Food

At Harry’s Breakfast Pancakes, located in the heart of Myrtle Beach on North King’s Highway, start your day with a hearty breakfast. Try the fluffy pancakes and cooked to perfection omelets that have kept us coming back for over 40 years.

After breakfast, journey to Huntington Beach State Park where turtles, alligators, and birds are plentiful. For a close look at herons and egrets, head over to Sandpiper Pond Nature Trail’s viewing deck.

Then take yourself to The Claw House in Murrells Inlet, the seafood capital of South Carolina, for New England-style waterfront dining. Feast on a tasty Lobster Roll or the flavorful and filling Low Country Shrimp & Grits.

Hello! Sounds like there is a lot to do in Myrtle Beach? We are thinking of going next Summer. Do you need a car to get around? Or are things within walking distance. We might rent a VRBO. Which side of the beach would be best to be close to restaurants and bars? Thanks in advance :)

I honestly think you need a car to get around in Myrtle Beach because everything is very spread out. If you rent one, make sure to get it a stand along car rental company and not the airport, which inflates the price by 80% or so. I would pick downtown Main Myrtle if it is your first time as that is where most of the family attractions are. There is plenty to do for sure! ;) Have fun.

I love Myrtle Beach!!! Growing up Panama City was our yearly vacation destination. Then I was taken to Myrtle Beach in my 20's and that's where I have taken my family since. I am familiar with a lot of the places you visited, and some always wanted to visit, but there is so much to do in Myrtle Beach. I really enjoyed reading your blog. A few places I haven't tried, but after reading about your visit I have put them on our list for a trip this year in September. River City Cafe is one of my Favs, as burgers are my favorite food. They have a few locations, and I try to eat at least once while I am there. I was trying to decide on Ripleys Museum or Hollywood Wax Mueseum..... This was one decision you did't make easy for me.....Anyways enjoyed your thoughts! Thank you!

Thanks for reading Stacey! We love hearing that other people love Myrtle Beach as much as we do :) Have a fantastic trip!
