NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

  • You could soon be paying £10 a pint in London

author image

london pubs

It is no surprise that the price of a pint in London is astronomical and one pub in particular is charging people almost £9 for one.

While the UK average for a pint stands at £4.80, the Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich, south London, is charging £8.80 for a pint of Coldharbour Lager.

And a person on X said they were charged £7.80 for a pint of Cruzcampo lager at the Dublin Castle, Camden, north London, made famous by Amy Winehouse.

Talking about the Trafalgar Tavern, Chelsea Dan posted on X: ‘You’re paying for the riverside view should be £2 off to drink inside.’

He also posted about the Dublin Castle and wrote: ‘Pint in Camden Town NW1 is now more expensive than Belgravia, Chelsea and Mayfair.

‘I’d like to praise the Dublin Castle for being one of the remaining live music pubs in my hometown but £7.80 for a Cruz Campo in the right glass – at least the music’s decent.’

Paul replied: ‘I paid £7.50 for a Guinness there a couple of months ago? Still the most I’ve paid for a pint.’

Other social media users have reported spending £8 a pint at the Anchor Inn London Bridge and £8.10 for a Madri in Leicester Square’s Slug and Lettuce.

Why are the cost of pints increasing?

Pubs are under pressure to increase prices since the pandemic in an attempt to woo customers away from buying cheaper alternatives at supermarkets.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show the average price of a pint increased by 10.8% in the 12 months to last December – from £4.24 to £4.70 and the British Beer and Pub Association says it is now £4.80 – and £5.69 across London.

Draught bitter was up by 9.1%, hitting £3.93 rather than the previous £3.60.

What is the average price of a pint in London?

Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association, warned about the impact this will have on pubs.

He told MailOnline: ‘London has the problem of more expensive rents and operating costs.

‘I think the industry has held off for a long time but they’ve got to a point where they’ve had to pass some of those costs on.

‘It’s all down to inflationary pressure – the ability to sustain a 30 to 40% operating cost increase will at some point have an impact on trade.

‘Inflation might have come down but we’re not seeing any effect at the coalface on operating costs such as rents or energy prices.’

A pint can cost almost £7 even at a Wetherspoon pub in London.

A pint of Corona is a whopping £6.98 at The Moon Under Water in Westminster. While the UK’s most expensive pint of Carling from a Wetherspoons can be found at The Willow Walk in Victoria, London, priced at £6.30.
