The best time to visit Aspen is December to February for skiing with peak snow conditions and vibrant après-ski events like the X Games. Alternatively, June to early September is perfect for non-skiers, featuring hiking, horseback riding, and festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival. Note that both periods see high demand for accommodations so be sure to book early.

Stunning Aspen, nestled high in Colorado’s mountains, is one of the most popular ski resorts in the United States, but it also has opportunities for year-round recreation.

Aspen’s main draw is, of course, skiing, and you can try your hand at the famous powder at several ski areas, such as Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, and Buttermilk. Visit outside of ski season, and you can go on scenic hikes, drives, or horseback rides in areas like Maroon Bells.

After skiing or hiking, relax in the quaint town with a cold glass from Aspen Brewing Company. Many of Aspen’s activities are seasonal, so it’s important to know when to visit. Keep reading to learn more about the best time to visit.

Overall Best Time to Visit Aspen

The best time to visit Aspen is during the peak of ski season, which lasts from December to February. If you don’t like skiing, then come between June and early September.

Since the main draw of visiting Aspen is the opportunity to ski at the many mountains around town, it makes sense to time your visit for the peak of ski season. Winter in Aspen is long, with snowfall from November to early April, giving you plenty of opportunities to enjoy some powder.

We recommend visiting December–February because that is when ski conditions are the best. According to snow forecast averages , December, January, and February have the best conditions.

December has, on average, 14 snowy days with 64 inches of snow. January follows closely behind with 13 snowy days and 56 inches, while February has 13 snowy days as well. Before visiting Aspen, you can always check the exact snow conditions online.

Sites like Aspen Snowmass offer detailed reports for all four mountains and trail conditions, so you know what to expect. Thanks to the plentiful snow, the ski resorts around Aspen are in full swing around this time.

All of the trails, ski lifts, and ski-related businesses are open during this time.

The après-ski atmosphere is also the most fun it gets during the year. The resorts are packed, and there are plenty of parties and events to show you that Aspen isn’t just snowy mountains and pristine nature.

Some of the most popular events include:

• Gay Ski Week  (January)
• Wintersköl  festival, an annual toast to winter (January)
• Aspen Laugh Festival  (February)

However, if you’re not interested in skiing much, then summer (June–early September) is the best time to visit. The summer season in Aspen is glorious.

All the snow has melted, and the mud has dried, meaning that the hiking trails are good to go. Local dude ranches offer horseback riding and other activities. Summer is also the busiest season in terms of festivals in Aspen.

Cheapest Time to Visit Aspen

The cheapest time to visit Aspen is during the spring (March–May), when the area receives the fewest visitors. At the beginning of the spring, from March into early April, you can still ski but pay much less for your accommodations than you would during the peak season.

Aspen has snowy days well into April, and the snowpack at higher altitudes is still in good shape in April. There is a bump in prices around spring break times, but overall, early spring skiing is much more affordable than winter.

In early April, Aspen hotels are heavily discounted. You can find discounts of 30%–40%. Since accommodations are your biggest expense when coming to Aspen, this is a big deal.

Visiting Aspen during the week is generally more affordable. Hotel prices tend to be lower during the week. Lift tickets are also less expensive  on weekdays by $15 compared to the weekend.

May is probably the cheapest month to visit Aspen. This is the end of ski season, but the summer high season hasn’t started yet. Hotels in early May offer discounts of 20%–40%.

Many hotels are closed for business during this time, and not all trails are passable due to snowmelt, but it’s a great time to explore the scenery without spending a lot of money.

Least Busy Time to Visit Aspen

To beat the crowds but still have some good weather, fall (September–November) is the best time to visit Aspen. Fall in Aspen is crisp and cool but beautiful. Average high temperatures in October are 58 degrees Fahrenheit , but already fall below freezing at night.

Thanks to the spectacular fall foliage, the mountains are at their most beautiful. This is a great time for nature lovers to visit. While you will need to bundle up, it’s still great weather for hiking, cycling, and for the brave, even camping.

The first snowfall is usually in mid-October, so trails are passable for most of the season. While spring has fewer visitors in absolute terms, in autumn, you’ll also have many trails to yourself.

Things in the town of Aspen itself are a bit slow during autumn as hotels prepare for the high season, and some businesses may be closed. Locals do their best to liven up the season with festivals, which are even more fun because they draw mostly a local crowd.

Towards the end of the fall season, you can even get the jump on the ski season! The ski season usually opens in the last weeks of November , and you can ski without the worst of the crowds that come later on in the season (just expect a few more people around on opening day).

Worst Time to Visit Aspen

The worst time to visit Aspen is during the late spring (mid-April to May) when opportunities for many outdoor activities aren’t the best. Spring is the most unpredictable weather in this part of Colorado.

Even though things begin to warm up during this season, they don’t warm up by much—average high temperatures in April are still just 53 degrees Fahrenheit .

Nighttime temperatures drop below freezing well into May. April and early May have some of the most unpredictable weather in this region. Some days are nice and sunny, followed immediately by snowstorms and temperatures that drop below freezing overnight.

The transitional period is also unpleasant on the mountain. The ski season ends by mid-April, and even before then, conditions on the slopes are unpredictable.

At lower altitudes, snow starts to melt by April, which has the unfortunate effect of turning trails into mud instead of making them passable for hikers. Many businesses also close completely for the season.

Getting To Aspen

Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (ASE) is a quick drive from town and High Mountain Taxi or private car service can easily get you to your destination. Many hotels offer complimentary airport transfer service, so be sure to check at the time of booking your Aspen hotel.

Outside the Roaring Fork Valley, Eagle/Vail is home to the next closest airport, a 90-minute drive from Aspen. And Denver International Airport is approximately 4 hours from Aspen by car. In the summer months, Independence Pass is one of two ways to get to town, although it is best for experienced drivers comfortable with steep, winding, and narrow mountain roads. Glenwood Springs, off I-70, is the other access point to the Roaring Fork Valley, making Aspen accessible via Highway 82 year round.

Once in town, RFTA is the local bus service that can help you get from point A to point B if you do not have a car or car service to transport you.

Rooftop Café at Aspen Art Museum ( 637 E Hyman Avenue ). With beautiful views, this hidden gem on the top floor of the museum offers tall floor to ceiling windows that frame the beauty of Aspen while you sip a coffee, tea, or stronger beverage. A selection of brunch and lunch items round out this stop as a great local place to linger a bit longer, especially during colder months.

JÜS (501 East Hyman Avenue). Our go-to for fresh-pressed juices (try our favorites: Charcoal Lemonade or the Ginger Greens), to-go lunch items, or small snacks to take out on the trails.

Spring Café (119 South Spring Street) . Offering clean and satisfying fare, this café is a relaxing place for an organic and vegan-friendly lunch.

LUNCH & DINNER

Base Camp Bar & Grill (73 Wood Road, Snowmass Village). Head to Base Camp for a casual, delicious meal or an adult beverage to relax those sore post-slope (from skiing or hiking) muscles.

Slice of Italy (69 Wood Run Road #1210, Snowmass Village). A warm, cozy atmosphere serving up classic Italian dishes and a great pizza pie.

Silverpeak Grill (520 Cooper Street). Chef-owned and operated by Troy Selby with a family-friendly atmosphere. The menu is full of options that make the whole family happy, but you’ll find your forks in the Chipotle Caesar.

Ajax Tavern (685 East Durant Avenue). Located at The Little Nell hotel, this is the perfect place to grab a burger and truffle fries. The restaurant, which has fantastic people-watching, is situated right at the base of Aspen Mountain, so the view is spectacular.

Casa Tua (403 South Galena Street). If you find yourself in Aspen in the summer, Casa Tua offers a lovely outdoor dining experience. Don’t miss the burrata salad with a glass of crisp white wine.

Home Team BBQ (38750 CO-82). Delicious food and a family-friendly atmosphere. Let the kiddos play outside at the base of Buttermilk Mountain while diving into some of the best barbecue around. 

The White House Tavern (302 East Hopkins Avenue). A local favorite, the menu is unpretentious but amazing, and the cocktails are legendary.

Paradise Bakery (320 S. Galena Street) . No trip to Aspen is complete without a trip to Paradise. Famous for their cookies since 1976. Get a dozen…and thank us later.

Sundae Ice Cream (499 Market Street, Basalt & 60 Carriage Way, Snowmass Village). Small-batch artisan ice cream, served with a smile, every day. You’ll find us with a scoop of Something Minty or Birthday Cake (even when it is not our birthday)!

Bosq (312 South Mill Street) . Chef Barclay Dodge delivers flavor-driven,  worldy New American cuisine in an intimate, modern setting with a summer-worthy see and be-seen patio.

Betula (525 East Cooper Avenue, #201). When you’re ready for an adult beverage this is the place to go. A cozy-chic dining experience with standout cocktails, we highly suggest the “Drink Me From the Bottom,” or the “Yellow Paloma”.

Cache Cache (205 South Mill Street). In business for three decades, Cache Cache boasts an impressive wine list and exquisite French-American menu.

DOWNVALLEY FAVORITE

Woody Creek Distillers (60 Sunset Drive, Basalt) . This local distillery producing vodka, gin, and more is a fantastic spot to enjoy a Colorado-crafted cocktail on the patio. Just be sure to call a taxi to take you home.

Pitkin County Dry Goods (520 East Cooper Avenue). A shopping staple in Aspen since 1969, they offer a wide range of denim, cozy cashmere, trendy tennis shoes and more, for men and women.

Souchi (205 South Mill Street). While the awesome selection of designer duds in this women’s boutique are worth the visit alone— the hand loomed knitwear pieces by owner Suzi are surely the showstoppers.

Elliott Yeary Gallery (419 East Hyman Avenue #7). Head to this fine art gallery and jewelry store for exquisite, one-of-a-kind gems, as well as artwork displayed inside their distinctly Aspen space (think old wood floors and brick walls).

The Art of Lounging (online) . An online-only marketplace that sells a wonderfully curated selection of mid-century furnishings and decor, that help to create stunning paired-down spaces.

Explore Booksellers (221 East Main Street). Inside a Victorian house on Main Street, the quaint local bookstore experience begins the moment you first lay eyes on it. With a plethora of cozy spots to explore inside, there is more than meets the eye not only inside these walls, but also inside the books stocked aplenty.

What to Do in Aspen

No matter the season or the reason for visiting, there are options for everyone, from active to artsy, and foodie to photography. Explore Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley by seeing and doing a scouted selection of favorite outdoor activities and world-famous famous excursions.

John Denver Sanctuary (470 Rio Grande Place) . This stunning public park built in memory of the singer John Denver is enjoyed by visitors of all ages. It’s open from dusk to dawn, always free, and a stunning, off-the-beaten-path location.

Aspen Art Museum (637 E Hyman Avenue) . Offering contemporary art in the heart of town, thanks to generous benefactors, admission is free and the rooftop deck is the perfect spot for a spectacular view of town.

Aspen Saturday Market (100 W Hopkins Avenue). If you’re in town on a Saturday in the summer, make sure you allot time to peruse the market, which takes the entire concept of a farmers market to an incredible level.

Snowmass Creek Outfitters (3941 Capitol Creek Road) . To get off the grid during the summer season, enlist these outfitters for a horseback riding excursion into the Western wilderness.

Snowmass Rodeo ( Brush Creek Road, Snowmass Village ). Every Wednesday night during the summer, the Snowmass Rodeo offers a variety of traditional rodeo events such as bull riding and team roping provide a colorful display of ranch life in the West. Young rodeo fans can sign up to participate in special events just for kids before the rodeo.

Ride Aspen and Rio Grande Trail . If you’re interested in some two-wheeled sightseeing, Amy and Erin recommend picking up a bike rental or an electric bike from Ride Aspen and hitting the trail during the warmer months. Woody Creek Tavern is the perfect one-way trip if lunch with feisty margaritas is how you prefer to end your rides.

Aspen Dancing Fountain (E. Hyman Avenue and S. Mill Street) . Need to cool off in the summer months? This is the ideal spot for kids to try and outsmart the fountain’s timing.

North Star Preserve (43151 CO-82) . You can float through this wildlife corridor via canoe, tube, kayaks, or paddleboards, starting at the South gate.

Ashcroft (11670 Castle Creek Road ). If you’d like to go somewhere remote, take a ride out to this ghost town that’s 11 miles south of Aspen. Visitors can take a docent-led tour of the historically preserved buildings and walk in eerie-quiet surrounded by the mountains.

T-Lazy-7 Ranch (3129 Maroon Creek Road). More of a River Runs Through It fan than City Slickers ? Set up a fly-fishing trip through this ranch. In the winter, they offer scenic and memorable snowmobile tours.

Aspen Mountain (611 E Durant Avenue). Nothing beats a gondola ride to the top of Aspen Mountain. As the locals say, “Life is better at the top!”

Maroon Bells (75 Boomerang Road). A visit to the dreamy, iconic spot in the White River Forest, Colorado’s most photographed setting, is always in order—typically open late May to early October by vehicle. Maroon Bells boasts 14,000-foot peaks reflected in a mirror-like lake, surrounded by fields of wildflowers in summer. There’s a scenic one-mile round-trip hiking trail, plus more advanced hikes for full panoramic splendor. Maroon Bells gets crowded any time of year, Amy and Erin warn, so early morning is the best time to visit if you want to avoid photo-bombers or taking the shuttle bus.

Pine Creek Cookhouse ( 12500 Castle Creek Road ). A premier destination in the winter, take a sleigh ride or hop on some cross-country skis to get to your lunch or dinner at the lodge tucked in near Ashcroft, with stellar mountain views by daytime and starry skies by night.

The Neighborhoods of Aspen

Easy to navigate, Aspen encompasses four square miles and is home to just under 8,000 residents. Neighborhoods abound in Aspen and throughout the Roading Fork Valley, but during your visit you’ll be most likely to visit these favorites.

Central Core. True to its name, Central Core is a community located in the heart of Aspen. Its strategic location makes it an ideal place for both vacationers and families who want to call Aspen home. The entire neighborhood is dotted with both old and modern architectural gems that give the community a small-town yet cosmopolitan vibe.

East Aspen. There is something magical about East Aspen. Its bucolic setting charms families and vacationers who want to live in a more relaxed environment, and the whole area is draped with picturesque mountain views year-round. In this idyllic neighborhood, every day calls for a new adventure.

Snowmass Village. Located 15-minutes from Aspen, its popularity reaches snow sports enthusiasts across the world, as the majestic mountains surrounding the village are perfect for outdoor fun and adventure. The town has luxurious resorts with panoramic views, gourmet dining options, and ultimate shopping galore. Snowmass Village real estate offers a wide variety of choices, from spacious single-family homes to stylish condominiums available throughout the community.

The West End . The West End is a quaint community known for canopied streets, historic houses, and beautiful summer gardens. The Mountains of Aspen

With four mountains, there are plenty of options for everyone around here. From family favorites to expert only terrain, your downhill day is covered (and not just in snow).

Aspen Mountain No easy runs but features plenty of blue runs for the newly minted intermediate skier or advanced skier. Towering over Aspen and steps from town, this legendary mountain is affectionately known as Ajax and is where Aspen’s ski status began.

After a hike to the top of the bowl with the die-hard skiers, or more laps if you’re ambitious, head to Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro (also known as Cloud9) and pop open that well deserved bottle of bubbly.

Snowmass Mountain Boasting more than 3,000 skiable acres and a run that is just over 5 miles long – appropriately named Longshot and worth the mini hike. Family-friendly and with a winter coaster, this mountain recently celebrated 50 years and features the all-new Snowmass Base Village.

Buttermilk is beloved by beginners and home to the Winter X Games, giving this mountain multiple personalities that fit a number of skiers and riders. Easy going and an uphill favorite, it is also home to parks and pipes for freeskiers and snowboarders looking to elevate their experience.

The Fanny Hill concerts in the summer are one of the best ways to pass a nice evening. And in the winter, we love to cross-country ski on the Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Trail System. The best part? Both of these are no charge.

Here’s the best time to visit Aspen, Colorado .

The first time I heard of Aspen was while flipping through a magazine in a doctor’s office. It was an outdated title, years old with a dusty cover and ripped pages. It smelled of must and vanilla. Inside was a piece about powder snow-capped mountains and lush white-Christmas perfect peaks.

The Aspen I saw then was pitched as a glamorous A-list romp frequented by the likes of the Kardashians. The pictures were a mix of cool glitz and glam.

I arrived in Aspen several years later ( initially on a day trip from Colorado Springs, one that I ended up extending by a week ). It was still picture perfect, exactly like the posh winter wonderland I had once seen in loose pages.

A tiny town rich in views, Aspen is beautiful year-round. So if you’re planning a trip there, here’s my guide on the best time to visit Aspen, Colorado!

Winter In Aspen

Winter in Aspen usually lasts from November to early April.

Winter in Aspen is ski season. Aspen gets an average of 170 inches of snow this time of year, making it the perfect frosty getaway.

If you can tackle a below-freezing chill and powder sports like skiing, sledding, and snowboarding , winter is one of the best times to visit Aspen.

It’s also peak tourist season, making it one of the most expensive times to hit up the town. Most resorts pop up shop between November to April (occasionally extending to May) and with them come price hikes.

You’ll be paying a little extra ( okay, a lot extra ) for cozy apres ski entertainment and a hot water spritz after a hard day on the slopes.

If you’re looking for a more affordable getaway , slash winter as one of the best times to visit Aspen. Consider spring, early summer, or fall instead.

Winter In Aspen Travel Tips:

• The best months for skiing in Aspen are March and April ( heavy snow months without the crowds ).
• From the 12 Days Of Aspen to Wintersköl, there are plenty of non-ski events to ring in the season.

Spring In Aspen

Spring in Aspen usually lasts from late April to May.

Aspen doesn’t see a traditional spring season. The spring months overlap with winter , whiplash weather extending to May.

April is one of the best months for skiing in Aspen ( cross-country skiing especially ). And if the onset of heat doesn’t sink in early, May can be a hit amongst ski bunnies as well.

By the time Aspen reaches the latter half of spring, the trails are hiking ready.

And the town is plump with concert line-ups . Most of the performances are held in Belly Up , a tiny venue with a full-service bar and celebrity headliners.

Spring In Aspen Travel Tips:

• Take full advantage of ski resorts opening their doors past April. The prices will be better, the crowds lower.
• Just past winter, in May, most lodging costs drop by half. It’s a give or take whether you’ll be able to ski. But if you’re searching for an affordable getaway, pick a date in May.
• If you can, avoid Memorial Day weekend. Briefly, the crowds pick up again and with them, the prices.

Summer In Aspen

Summer in Aspen usually lasts from June to August.

Early summer is the best time to visit Aspen. Once the traditional wintertime air punches dry, Aspen dons a new look: vibrant greens draping along mountainsides.

There’s still a cool crackle from the nose-bleed high altitudes, but summer in Aspen is perfect for weekend escapes .

Independence Pass , the scenic byway stretching between Leadville and Aspen is open ( until it shuts again past fall ). Here, you’ll snake past San Isabel National Forest, the woodsy banks of White River National Forest, and craggy snow-capped mountains. You’ll feel your breath shorten as the views widen into a surreal dreamlike landscape.

The highway cuts right through the Continental Divide and even in the dead of the summer, the weather blinks cool and hot.

Summertime in Aspen is a thrill. The shopping scene in downtown (by Aspen Block) is alive. Off-the-skis Aspen is more accessible ( think multiple coffee stops, a quick day trip drive to Maroon Bells, and museum visits by the dozen ) in terms of walkability and price .

• Head to one of the local parks (Paepcke Park or Wagner) if you want to hit up all the local events.
• Admission to the Aspen Art Museum is free year-round.
• In the summer, admission to the Holden/Marlot Mining and Ranching Museums also includes access to the Wheeler Stallard Museum.

Fall In Aspen

Fall in Aspen usually lasts from September to October.

If you’re looking for the best time to visit Aspen to see the fall colors, late September is a good bet.

Fall in Aspen is a puff of yellows. Autumn is a fairly warm season ( by Aspen standards ). The trees turn golden, like an earthy transplant of King Midas’ palace.

Peak tourist season ( to see fall colors ) in Aspen is the first week of September , when popular attractions like Maroon Bells resort to overflow parking. Come early ( before the Maroon Bells bus drops off the crowds ).

The rest of fall is shoulder season . Hotels drop rates, transforming Aspen into a unique affordable getaway.

Fall In Aspen Travel Tips:

• Skate through Independence Pass to see view upon view flecked in orange and red.
• Head to the Aspen Saturday Farmer’s Market for some seasonal fruits and vegetables.
• The Wheeler-Stallard Museum is free on the first Saturday of each month.
• Summer and fall in Aspen offer similar activities ( except fall in Aspen lives under the hood of yellow hues ).
• Take a horseback ride. Boot up and trot through the lush fall foliage.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Aspen, Colorado

Some 200 miles west of Denver , Aspen, Colorado, is nestled in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. It’s a peaceful retreat in every season, alive with colorful wildflowers in the summer and golden-yellow aspen leaves in the fall. But in the winter , this mountain town feels especially magical—fresh snow glitters on the trees, and downtown comes alive with twinkling strings of lights.

With four ski resorts and expansive terrain to explore on snowshoes or cross-country skis, Aspen is a major winter outdoor recreation hub. Plus, after you come in from the cold, you can warm up at the chicest après-ski scene in the country and immerse yourself in the city’s sophisticated arts and culture. At 8,000 feet in elevation, Aspen sees chilly temperatures in the winter, but thanks to Colorado’s abundant sunshine and dry climate (and the right jacket and gear ), you’ll hardly notice. Here’s how to plan a weekend trip filled with the best things to do in Aspen.

Getting there

Fly into the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport , which offers nonstop commercial flights this winter from Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, and Denver, plus hundreds of connecting flights. There are also many charter and private jet options for traveling to Aspen, including new semi-private flights from Los Angeles aboard Aero .

Aspen’s leaders and residents are incredibly passionate about limiting greenhouse gas emissions, so once you arrive, consider getting around via the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority ’s robust bus system. Many of the routes are completely free, and the maps and schedules are intuitive and easy to navigate, even for first-time visitors. Because the city is also highly walkable, and most hotels have free shuttles, skipping the rental car is totally doable. In the spring, summer, and fall, the nonprofit WE-cycle bike-share network offers free, unlimited, 30-minute rides on both pedal and electric bikes.

To explore more of the Centennial State, fly into Denver International Airport , then rent a car and head west on I-70. On the scenic, four-hour drive you’ll pass by charming mountain towns like Idaho Springs, Silverthorne, Frisco, Glenwood Springs, and Carbondale. (Fair warning, if you’re traveling during the winter: Prepare for the possibility of snow and ice, as well as traffic backups and road closures—storms and general ski traffic can bog down I-70.) There are also daily passenger shuttle options from Denver International Airport to Aspen.

Things to do in Aspen, Colorado

Travelers head to Aspen during the warmer months for patio dining, world-renowned concerts and festivals, and warm-weather activities like hiking, mountain biking, and fly fishing. But from December to early April, Aspen is all about the downhill skiing and snowboarding at four Aspen Skiing Company resorts— Aspen Mountain , Buttermilk , Aspen Highlands , and Snowmass —which have varying terrain types and difficulty levels (and appear on our Readers' Choice Awards list for the best North American ski resorts 2022 ).

You can ski right into downtown from Aspen Mountain (known locally as “Ajax”) which has 64 miles and 3,267 vertical feet of terrain. Sprawling Snowmass offers tons of family-friendly runs and amenities. Aspen Highlands is known for its steep, rugged terrain (and is especially popular among locals), while Buttermilk has a world-class terrain park. You can easily hop around and try all four mountains, as they're all accessible via the same lift ticket. Aspen Snowmass' four mountains are also on several multi-mountain season passes , including Ikon and Mountain Collection. If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding (or you just need a refresher), enroll in a group or private lesson—Aspen’s instructors and guides are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced.

Beyond downhill skiing, Aspen offers a wide variety of other winter outdoor activities, like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, up-hilling, birding, hiking, and ice fishing, to name a few. There are experienced guides and instructors who can show you the ropes, too, including Sun Dog Athletics , Blazing Adventures , and Ashcroft Touring and Adventures .

More experienced mountaineers can take advantage of the region’s backcountry skiing areas (out-of-bounds, ungroomed, and unmonitored terrain), but be sure to go through avalanche training or tap a guide to be safe— Aspen Alpine Guides , for example, offers regular avalanche courses and guided backcountry excursions. For a backcountry-esque adventure that stays in-bounds, try hiking up to the 12,392-foot summit of Highland Bowl , then skiing the double-black-diamond terrain down—you’ll want to be in peak physical shape and be an experienced skier for this one.

To learn more about Aspen’s unique high-alpine plants and animals, book a guided tour with a naturalist from the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) or spend a few quiet, reflective moments in nature at the organization’s 25-acre nature preserve and environmental learning center, Hallam Lake. Bring your binoculars; Hallam Lake is a great place to observe colorful waterfowl and other birds.

Aspen is also a high-end shopping hub, with fashion brands like Prada , Gucci , and Ralph Lauren lining downtown’s pedestrian-friendly brick streets. To round out your shopping trip, browse for unexpected treasures—like a vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase or a pair of World War II binoculars—at Daniel’s Antiques , then head over to Explore Booksellers to grab your latest read. And those chic cowboy hats you see everyone wearing around town? Those come from Kemo Sabe , a downtown spot where you can customize a trendy Stetson and pick up other Western accessories.

Immerse yourself in Aspen’s rich arts and culture scene by strolling through the free Aspen Art Museum , which puts on rotating contemporary art exhibitions. With an exterior finish reminiscent of a woven picnic basket, the 33,000-square-foot, three-story museum building—designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban—is a work of art in its own right. The stunning 133-year-old Wheeler Opera House —an elaborate, lovingly maintained Victorian-era gem—has a full calendar of comedy shows, dance performances, festivals, concerts, and other events. The Wheeler is also part of the new Colorado Historic Opera Houses Circuit , an initiative to drum up support for the five remaining historic opera houses located around the Centennial State, so even if you don’t have time to see a show, it’s worth stopping by just to appreciate its grande 1889 architecture. The Aspen Historical Society also offers guided tours of the iconic building, which has maintained its status as the community’s artistic hub for decades.

Carve out time to visit the newly opened Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies , which opened at the Aspen Institute earlier this year. The new, 7,000-square-foot museum contemplates the life and legacy of Herbert Bayer, an Austrian-American polymath who studied and taught at the famed Bauhaus art school that operated in Germany from 1919 to 1933. Bayer lived in Aspen from 1946 to 1974 and helped shape the then-burgeoning city’s overall look, feel, and post-World War II growth. Notably, he designed the 40-acre grounds of the institute—which hosts an array of important annual events, including the Aspen Ideas Festival and the longstanding Aspen Music Festival and School —and he developed the Aspen Skiing Company’s original, instantly recognizable leaf-shaped logo. The center offers guided tours, as well as rotating exhibitions; the current show, Herbert Bayer: An Introduction , explores Bayer’s work as a painter. You can also stay on-site at Aspen Meadows Resort , which offers an up-close view of Bayer’s distinctive style and legacy. The hotel is undertaking a multi-million-dollar renovation, starting with its 98 spacious guest suites.

If your trip allows, try to catch a show at Belly Up Aspen , a small but renowned live music venue that’s hosted well-known musicians ranging from Lil Wayne to Jimmy Buffett. It’s also worth it to make the quick drive or bus ride over to Anderson Ranch Arts Center , founded in Snowmass 1966, to explore its outdoor sculpture exhibition and attend a variety of lectures and workshops.

Where to eat

Taste the flavors of the Roaring Fork Valley with a dinner of the senses at Bosq , where chef and co-owner Barclay Dodge creates dishes and cocktails from local ingredients he forages himself in the surrounding wilderness. Bosq’s seasonal, multi-course tasting menus feature Rocky Mountain-inspired fare like Colorado lamb with grilled escarole, grilled plums, and horseradish. There are just 35 seats at Bosq, which is located downtown across from the popular Wagner Park, so try to make a reservation as early in your travel plans as possible.

Duck into Hooch for an exquisite hand-crafted cocktail and speakeasy vibes. Linger over a bubbling vat of cheese fondue and perfectly prepared crepes at French Alpine Bistro . For lunch, stop by White House Tavern and order the locals’ favorite crispy chicken sandwich, made with Swiss cheese, tomato, and spicy coleslaw. Other upscale spots to bookmark include Matsuhisa for sushi, Ellina for contemporary Italian cuisine, and Bear Den Aspen for brunch. Before you leave, stock up on artisanal cheeses, cured meats, and pickles from Meat and Cheese , a hybrid restaurant and specialty food store.

While skiing or snowboarding at Aspen Mountain, refuel with a stack of pillowy pancakes at Bonnie’s or a cone of crispy truffle fries at Ajax Tavern (which also offers some of the best people-watching in town). Spending the day at Snowmass means treating yourself to a long lunch at Sam’s , an upscale Italian restaurant with awe-inspiring mountain views from nearly every seat. And if you don’t mind getting sprayed with a little champagne, end your day at Aspen Highlands with lunch and apres at Cloud Nine , the lively ski-in, ski-out cabin where travelers and locals alike love to let loose.

Strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and make your way across Ashcroft Ski Touring’s snowy trails to Pine Creek Cookhouse , a log cabin-style restaurant in the scenic Castle Creek Valley with unobstructed views of the towering Elk Mountains. Offering wild game, fresh seafood, and other alpine-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner, it's is one of the most beloved eateries in town—meaning reservations are a must. You can also ride in a horse-drawn sleigh, take a private cross-country ski lesson, or tap a guide to explore Ashcroft, which is home to the remains of an 1880s ghost town.

Where to stay

An Aspen landmark since 1889, the 133-year-old Hotel Jerome opened amid the city’s silver-mining boom as a model of class and elegance, offering guests tantalizing new amenities like electric lighting and indoor plumbing. The stately, three-story brick building survived Aspen's subsequent silver bust and the Great Depression, then tracked the city's rise to become an elite mountain destination among intellectuals, skiers, movie stars, and artists. Nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street just steps from downtown, the high-end lodge has nine guest rooms and a two-bedroom penthouse suite available for total buyouts. Gaze at Aspen Mountain from the heated rooftop pool and hot tub, then retreat indoors for a cozy movie night in the plush media room. For groups with skiers and snowboarders of varying ability levels, sister property Limelight Hotel Snowmass —which opened at the base of Snowmass’s slopes in late 2018—is an ideal home base for exploring the friendly ski area’s wide blue groomers and dispersed trees.

For ski-in, ski-out access to Aspen Mountain, book into one of the 92 slopeside rooms at The Little Nel l, which has been a luxurious Aspen icon since 1989. And even if you don’t stay, at least stop by for a glass of wine at the new Wine Bar at The Nell or a steaming mug of their popular hot chocolate, made with rich Dutch cocoa. When deciding the best time to visit Aspen, there are a few factors to take into account. What are you looking to do, what would you like to see, and what weather do you prefer? Spring is the least crowded season in Aspen. If you’re looking to get away without any crowds, spring is the time to do it. Temperatures range from the 20s to 60s, so you never know what you’re going to get. However, if you bundle up, you can enjoy some outdoor activities such as biking or hiking. This is also a very rainy season, so you will need to check the weather before deciding on which activities you’d like to enjoy during your vacation. We like to think of fall as our magical secret season. Many people write this off as the off-season, but we disagree. Fall can be an amazing time of year with mild weather, beautiful foliage, and a dusting of snow on the high peaks. You can get better deals on airfare, lodging, and food with no summer crowds to have to share it with. Aspen regains its small-town feel in the off-season, a quieter time when the true essence of the town reveals itself. Here are four reasons why we love fall! 

• No One Can Predict the Weather – No one can predict the weather, but fall usually has some beautiful days! There’s an old saying, “If you don’t like the weather in Colorado, wait five minutes.” That’s especially true in the fall! Warm, sunny days can give way to blistering cold nights and the occasional snowstorm. However, you can usually find plenty of nice days to enjoy the outdoors. 
• Goodbye, Crowds! – Fewer people means Aspen retains the small-town feel that makes it special, and fall is the perfect time to experience it. It also means that you’re more likely to get a table at your favorite restaurant or a drink in a less crowded bar.
• Fall Foliage, of Course – There are few things more beautiful than seeing Aspen during peak foliage season. Our fall colors transform the mountains into brilliant shades of gold, so make sure you bring a camera!

Best times to visit Colorado

There's no bad time to visit Colorado, but some times are better than others. The best time to visit for you will depend largely on what you want to do when you get there. Snow may be hard to come by at most elevations in August, and you're not likely to have great hiking and mountain biking weather in most parts of the state in January. But -- it also all depends.

At about 380 miles long and 280 miles wide, Colorado has multiple climates, so it's entirely possible to be in the middle of snowy conditions on the mountain, while folks are walking around Denver in shorts and a T-shirt. So unlike somewhere with a defined climate across the whole area, like say the Maldives , the best time to visit Colorado is a bit more nuanced based on where you are heading and what your priorities are while you're there.

When to find the best weather in Colorado

Most of the time, the "best weather" means going when it is most likely to be sunny and temperate. But in Colorado, where people go to chase powder, you're going to need to define "best weather" a bit more closely.

Best times to visit for skiing

If you're hoping for a great day skiing or boarding on the mountain, then your best months for snow will be the winter months. While there are some outliers in Colorado with longer ski seasons that run October to May (or longer), most ski mountain resorts are open from late-November to early-April, based on snow conditions. However, early and late season conditions can be very unpredictable in terms of snow totals and quality.

The average snowiest months in most parts of Colorado are February and March, while January is typically the coldest month based on historic averages. All things being equal, I'm a big fan of late-February Colorado skiing. By then, the snow totals should be good and temperatures are typically still safely below freezing, while usually being beyond the deepest bitter cold of winter.

Best times to visit for hiking and white water rafting

If you're after air that is warm by day, but crisp and cool by night, your best weather months in Colorado are mid-June through September, though know that early June and even late-September can still be potentially dicey in some higher elevations. But if you want to enjoy hiking and exploring Colorado and places like Rocky Mountain National Park on foot, summer is your best bet for optimal weather.

Those looking for Colorado white water rafting will also be best served in the summer, with the caveat that the most adrenaline-packed water usually comes in late spring and early summer as the snowmelt fills the rivers, while a more tranquil float is more often found later in the summer.

The transitional months of April, May and late-October can hold the most unpredictable weather in Colorado of the 12 months, so these are months you may want to avoid if you don't want the weather conditions to be a last-minute surprise.

When to travel to Colorado to avoid the crowds

Remember those transitional, or shoulder season, months I just mentioned as being a touch less desirable in terms of unpredictable weather? Well, forget that part if you're looking to avoid the crowds. Typically speaking, April and May and then October through mid-December will be your least crowded months in Colorado, as visitors often aim for the warmth and accessibility of summer or the powdery snow of winter.

But, you can get really lucky with phenomenal early or late season snow, if that's what you are secretly hoping for. In 2019, Steamboat Springs enjoyed 44 inches of snow on the middle of the mountain in October 2019, prompting the ski resort to start operations up earlier than originally planned.

On the flip side, a later arrival of fall can mean that the leaves are actually at their peak at some point in early to mi-October, saving the aspen's golden show for the lucky few traveling during a traditional shoulder season.

Cheapest dates to visit Colorado

The least expensive times for hotels in Colorado depends on where you're traveling.

For example, December is the cheapest hotel month on average in Denver, according to Kayak . This is likely due to a drop-off in business travel in December.

However, if you were to look at a ski town such as Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, Steamboat, etc., then December prices are some of the highest of the year -- especially during the second half of the month.

Again according to Kayak data , in Vail, the cheapest month for a hotel night is May, with an average of price of $142 per night, while the average cost of a night in December is $668 (making ski season precisely when you want to redeem those hotel points).

If you want to stay slopeside at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek , it will cost you 30,000 World of Hyatt points per night for a standard room, even when that room is selling for $1,000 per night during peak season. (Here's how to earn some Hyatt points of your very own.)

Out in Estes Park , which is adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park , the least expensive month for hotels is April, while the most expensive months are July and August.

The cheapest months to fly to Colorado, according to Kayak , are September, October and May.

The priciest months to fly to Colorado are in December, especially around the holidays, and March -- because of spring break travel. However, since Denver (DEN) has such a large presence of low-cost air carriers, you have more low-fare options available there than in many other destinations, regardless of when you decide to travel.

The average cost of a domestic round-trip ticket to Denver is about $50 below that national average across airports. (However, the smaller airports such as Aspen-Pitkin, Vail-Eagle, etc. are often much pricier if using cash.)

Seasonal events in Colorado

Summer events.

Summer is festival season across Colorado, which can temporarily dramatically impact rates and availability when something as major as the Telluride Film Festival is in town .

A sampling of other popular summer festivals and events in Colorado include Telluride Bluegrass Festival , Colorado Brewers Festival in Fort Collins, Blues and BBQ in Denver, Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo in Steamboat Springs.

The "Wildflower Capital of the World," Crested Butte, holds its annual wildflower festival in July . You're also sure to find a variety of farmers markets, fairs and rodeos across the state during the warm weather months.

Fall events

Fall brings with it not only the changing of the leaves in must-see spots like Maroon Bells near Aspen but also several autumnal-themed events, like Oktoberfest. There are a few Oktoberfest-type festivals around the state, but a popular one is Vail Oktoberfest , which is extra special as Vail itself has a very European look and feel.

In Denver, in the fall you'll also find the Great American Beer Festival.

A unique fall event in Colorado happens each September and October as the elk in the Estes Park area bugle and put on a show for each other (and we just get to watch). To go along with the natural annual "rut," there is also Elk Fest that takes place in Bond Park. Winter is the time for all things snow and ice in Colorado. In addition to getting lots of use out of annual ski passes such as Ikon, Epic and Mountain Collective across the state at ski resorts large and small, there are other winter happenings in Colorful Colorado.

If you want to take in the best of the best at X-Games, head to the Aspen area each winter. This year, the competitive winter sports event is slated for late-January. (Snag a room on points at the new W Aspen , if you can.) The last several winters, there's been an ice castle constructed in Dillon, Colorado , that is worth a visit.

Spring events

Spring brings with it the end-of-season events at the various ski mountains, which can be pretty entertaining if you like to see folks in fun costumes ski jump from the melting snow into the water!

But once the snow melts and the lifts stop running, the early season festivals begin to crop up. In Beaver Creek, you'll usually find the Blues, Brews & BBQ festival happening in May.

If mountain biking is more your speed, in May you can find the Fruita Fat Tire Festival out in western Colorado, which is home to some of the best mountain bike terrain in the state.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Smaller Crowds

Much of Colorado’s tourism revolves around the outdoors, so the state has two busy seasons: summer (when outdoor pursuits like hiking and biking are at their best) and winter (aka ski season ). In the breaks between these busy times — namely, April through May and October to mid-December — you’ll typically find fewer people. When compared with summer and winter, these off-seasons come with more availability at resorts and restaurants and less traffic on the notoriously crowded I-70 mountain corridor.

Keep in mind, though, that the busiest and least busy seasons can vary depending on what part of the state you're visiting. In Denver , for instance, the airport may be packed in the winter thanks to travelers headed west to the mountains, but the city itself should be uncrowded. January and February can be great months to plant yourself in the Mile High City and enjoy its many indoor delights, from world-class museums to recently Michelin-starred restaurants .

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Good Weather

Anyone who has spent enough time in Colorado knows that the weather can change quickly — and vary from year to year. Typically, however, the best weather can be found between May and October. During this warm-weather window , snowfall is unlikely (but not impossible) and the sun is almost always shining.

If you run hot, you may want to skip July and August, which are usually the warmest months, and plan a trip instead for the spring or fall. Just keep in mind that conditions vary depending on what part of the state you're in. The weather is always cooler in the mountains (and at higher elevations) when compared to Denver. So, while an October trip may be mild and sunny in the capital, it could be snowy in the mountains — and, conversely, a July visit could be scorching in the city but bearable in Breckenridge.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Lower Prices

To snag the best deals in Colorado , you can typically follow a simple formula: when crowds are smaller, the prices tend to be lower, too. If you’re traveling near a ski area, hotel rates will likely be at their peak during ski season and not much lower during the height of summer. Those same hotels, though, will often have lower rates in the early spring (April and May) and late fall to early winter (late October to mid-December).

If you don't want to confine yourself to the off-season, there are other ways to save. Staying in a lesser-known mountain town instead of renowned destinations like Aspen can help you find lower rates, as can using Frontier Airlines — Colorado's homegrown budget carrier — when it's time to fly in and out.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Wildflowers

Nailing down exact dates for wildflower season is almost impossible, since the arrival of the blooms depends on several factors — most notably snowmelt and elevation. That said, the flowers usually emerge at lower elevations in either late spring or early summer. At higher elevations, the season starts later, often in July or even August.

The great thing is that even though wildflower season is hard to predict, you can almost always find blooms somewhere between May and August — you just have to be willing to make the journey (or hike) to see them.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Skiing

Colorado’s ski season typically runs from late November through early April, but it varies greatly based on the area. Some ski spots, like Arapahoe Basin and Keystone , welcome visitors as early as late October and remain open through mid-June or even early July. It all depends on snowfall, elevation, and snowmaking.

That said, arguably the best time to ski in Colorado is January and February. The snow tends to be nice and deep (and still falling), and there's lots of off-mountain fun on offer, too, thanks to events like Aspen Gay Ski Week and the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival .

March is another great time for a ski trip , since it comes with less-frigid temperatures and (slightly) lower hotel prices than you'll find in the heart of winter.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Hiking

If you have the right equipment, you can trek many trails in Colorado year-round, but peak hiking season runs from June through October. During this window, most trails are snow-free and the majority of high-mountain passes are open. In the middle of summer (July and August), you’ll want to bring plenty of sun protection — but also some rain gear, since pop-up showers aren't uncommon.

Those who want to hike in May and early June will need to bring microspikes for traversing snow-covered trails, while those interested in trekking late into fall should pack layers and be prepared for the possibility of snow.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Fall Foliage

Like wildflower season, the best time to catch the state’s colorful fall foliage changes based on summer moisture and elevation. Trees at lower elevations tend to change later, while those high in the mountains will transform earlier — sometimes before fall has even technically begun. In general, though, fall colors reach their peak between mid-September and mid-October.

Your best bet is to visit a place with a high number of aspen trees, which boast beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds, and to plan on traveling up or down in elevation in order to find trees at the peak of change.

Worst Times to Visit Colorado

With so many attractions throughout the year, it's hard to call any time the "worst" for visiting Colorado. The seasons that may not work for you depend on your priorities.

For budget-conscious or crowd-averse travelers, the state's winter and summer high seasons probably aren't ideal. While they offer the best conditions for seasonal sports, these peak times will be pricey and busy. Visiting in the spring and fall can net you a gorgeous mountain getaway for a fraction of the cost and with a fraction of the crowds.

There are also the obvious weather considerations. Skiers and snowboarders should avoid the summer (unless heading to the extra-long-season resorts), while hikers and campers should skip the winter if they don't have specialized skills and equipment.

Basically, there are peak and off-peak times for every pursuit and every town — but, taken as a whole, the state of Colorado can offer you a great vacation any month of the year.

Get ready to feel like a daredevil as you navigate tight turns along towering cliffs and through thick forests. When you're ready to stretch your legs, a paved hiking trail (the Independence Pass Scenic Trail) leads to a sightseeing platform where far-reaching views of the Continental Divide are sure to make your jaw drop.

Those who cruised through Independence Pass say the scenery is truly breathtaking, adding that there are spots along the way to stop for a picnic and snap photos. Although travelers agree that a drive down Independence Pass is a must, they also advise that you proceed with caution because of the daunting nature of the narrow, winding road. (Some go as far to say if you are prone to carsickness or fear heights, this is not a trip for you.) 

Snowmass Snowmass

Aspen's largest and most popular ski area is the ultimate destination for winter sports enthusiasts (and one of the top Colorado ski resorts ). Comprising 3,342 acres of skiable terrain, this massive complex features nearly 100 trails, 20 lifts and a charming village with a variety of shops and restaurants. Roughly half of the trails here are designed for intermediate-level skiers, but more advanced powder hounds will find plenty of challenging stretches of snow to try. Snowboarders should also note that Snowmass has one of the best snowboarding schools in the United States.

Previous visitors raved about the ski area and the variety of its terrain, noting that there are runs for all types of skiers and that the lift lines and trails were not terribly crowded. But when it comes to shopping and dining options, some travelers were disappointed by Snowmass Village.

Aspen Mountain Aspen Mountain

It's this mountain – first opened to skiers in 1947– that put Aspen on the map. And with spectacular summit views and slopes that will make even the most advanced skier's heart race, it's no wonder why Aspen Mountain remains a favorite spot for winter sports-lovers and is considered one of Colorado's top ski resorts . "Ajax," as it's sometimes called, features approximately 675 skiable acres with 64 miles of runs (complete with a variety of bumps and steeps); you can also make your own tracks along the Aspen Mountain Powder Tour's backcountry terrain. When you're ready to call it a day, you can satisfy your appetite at one of the nearby restaurants or bars.

When they compare it to Aspen's other ski areas, visitors and locals say that Aspen's veteran mountain is the best. However, novice skiers beware: Travelers warn this is not a mountain for beginners. They say it's made for intermediate to expert skiers and snowboarders, due to the challenging nature of most of the terrain. Skiers say they appreciate the variety of trails, from groomed blues to powdery black diamonds to expert-only double black diamonds.

T-Lazy-7 Ranch T-Lazy-7 Ranch

Whether you need a break from the slopes or a fun summer activity, T-Lazy-7 Ranch has you covered. Nestled in the Maroon Creek Valley just 2 miles south of Aspen Highlands , the ranch is considered the gateway to exploring the Maroon Bells . For more than 80 years, T-Lazy-7 Ranch has been owned and operated by the Deane family. Today, visitors to the ranch can explore the area on horseback or snowmobile, or participate in activities like fly-fishing. Visitors can also purchase provisions, such as eggs, honey and wagyu beef, from the on-site farm store.

There are a variety of horseback rides to choose from, ranging in length from one hour to a full day. If you're inexperienced with horses or looking for a leisurely ride, heed the advice of past visitors and consider the hourlong trek instead of the longer, 90-minute or half-day excursions. Reviewers said the trail terrain is rocky and may not be suitable for the faint of heart. Snowmobile tours are also well-reviewed (and among the best in Colorado ). Recent travelers noted that along with enjoying the views and learning how to operate a snowmobile, you will hear some local history from tour guides.

Silver Queen Gondola Silver Queen Gondola

The Silver Queen Gondola travels 2.5 miles from the heart of Aspen to the 11,000-foot-high summit of Aspen Mountain. A sundeck and eatery greets visitors at the top of the mountain and makes for a great spot to relax, grab a drink or a bite to eat, and take photos of the surrounding landscape. If you're visiting in the summer months, there are plenty of opportunities to hike, dine and even enjoy some live music. In the winter, you can access more than 75 trails from the top of the gondola. If you're not much of a skier, you can also embark on snowshoe trails on Richmond Ridge with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies , who offer daily tours.

Despite the promise of a fantastic view, some travelers say that gondola tickets are as steep as the incline. (You can save some coin by purchasing your tickets in advance.) Even though the prices are high, travelers agree that a ride on the Silver Queen Gondola is a must for visitors to Aspen, citing the fantastic views and the enjoyable journey up the mountain.

Crater Lake Trail Crater Lake Trail free

Crater Lake Trail is one of several spectacular hikes within Maroon Bells Scenic Area. The 3.5 mile out-and-back trail, which starts at the Maroon Lake parking area, is considered moderately challenging. Arrive around sunrise if you want a quiet experience, as this is one of the area’s most popular trails. The trail it is best hiked from June through October (the county will close the road in November based on snow conditions). Once the road is closed, visitors can walk, bike, cross-country ski or snowmobile from T-Lazy-7 Ranch.

Recent visitors crowed about the incredible views on Crater Lake Trail. Several noted the significant rocky portions, but all said the trek is worthwhile. Bring enough water, and be sure to seek the required permit and reservation early if you're accessing it by car.

Buttermilk Buttermilk

With 21 miles of open, stress-free trails, Buttermilk – one of the top Colorado ski resorts – is the perfect spot to try your first run or to teach your kids to ski. According to visitors, all the beginner trails are groomed and the runs are wide, so there's plenty of room for skiers to maneuver. What's more, they say it never feels crowded. You can also sign up for private ski and snowboard lessons if you need some guidance. Recent visitors described the instructors as friendly, positive and helpful. Reviewers also praised the Cliffhouse restaurant at the top of the mountain, with some saying the views from the top are among the best in Colorado.

Beginner-friendly slopes aside, this mountain also offers trails for intermediate and expert skiers and is known for its 22-foot superpipe and X Games-inspired course. Buttermilk's expansive terrain parks include 470 skiable acres. Though there are no mountain operations at Buttermilk in the summer, visitors can still access it to make use of the hiking trails.

Aspen Highlands Aspen Highlands

Aspen Highlands is known as the preferred ski area among Aspen locals (it's also one of the top Colorado ski resorts ). If you're looking for a challenge, this is the ski area for you: more than half of the trails here were carved with advanced and expert skiers in mind, with plenty of double black diamond runs offering stomach-dropping descents.

Skiers love the local feel of this mountain and say it's a bonus that it's rarely crowded. Travelers note the majority of terrain is definitely geared toward advanced skiers who know how to handle steep pitches and deep powder. When it comes to mealtime, previous visitors strongly recommend dining at Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, which offers breathtaking views of the Maroon Bells .

Aspen Whitewater Rafting Aspen Whitewater Rafting

For summer adventure, it’s hard to beat a whitewater rafting trip on the Roaring Fork River. The river is aptly named, sporting intense rapids in the south (Class V) that gradually decrease down to Class II as the river flows north. The portion of the river nearest Aspen has some of the most intense rapids.

The river has many sections, including three that are especially popular with whitewater rafters. The wildest section of Roaring Fork is Slaughterhouse, which is rated Class IV to V and reserved for experienced rafters. For the adventurous traveler seeking scenic views, Woody Creek and Toothache offer mid-rated rapids (Class III to IV).  Cemetery is the mildest section, rated Class II to III. These rapids are more family-friendly and promise equally beautiful views.  

Aspen Brewing Company Aspen Brewing Company

Aiming to bring the craft beer scene to Aspen, Aspen Brewing Company was founded in 2008 and has been brewing and serving up beers ever since. The brewery offers a wide variety of beer, ranging from blonde and red ales to stouts and pilsners to seasonal brews. With seating indoors and on an adjacent patio, Aspen Brewing Company's tap room encourages visitors to grab a pint and #DrinkInTheView.

Travelers praise this brewery, citing the friendly and entertaining staff members, the tasty brews and the relaxed atmosphere as prime reasons to return. Some recent visitors noted mediocre service, potentially due to staffing shortages.

Glenwood Springs Glenwood Springs free

While you'll have no trouble finding ways to fill your time in Aspen proper, you would be remiss if you visited the Roaring Fork Valley and didn't make a stop in Glenwood Springs – one of the top things to do in Colorado . Sitting about 40 miles northwest of Aspen along Route 82 – near the junction of Interstate 70 – Glenwood Springs offers just as many spots to hike as its more popular neighbor, not to mention fishing and whitewater rafting opportunities. The town is also home to an intricate collection of caverns that are worth exploring

But it's not caves and trails that earn Glenwood Springs a favorable reputation among travelers in-the-know – it's the town's legendary hot springs. Known as the Yampah Hot Springs by nomadic regional Native American tribes (such as the Ute), the Hot Springs Pool has been used by Indigenous Americans for centuries; and the bubbling pools have catered to such legendary clientele as President Theodore Roosevelt, the "unsinkable" Molly Brown and the notorious Al Capone. Recent swimmers mentioned that a visit to the pools can be pricey (adult rates range from $29 to $42, depending on the season). However, the admission fee allows you to stay and soak for as long as you'd like. Travelers say a soak in the hot springs is quite relaxing and rejuvenating after a few days of skiing; some previous travelers also recommended visiting during the evening for a less crowded experience.

Ashcroft Ghost Town Ashcroft Ghost Town

Ghosts may not be real, but ghost towns sure are. Ashcroft, a town about 10 miles south of Aspen, was settled in 1880 by silver prospectors. The town thundered into existence with a Miner's Protective Association, courthouse and street grid – all in two weeks. Three years later, the town was home to about 2,000 residents; bigger than Aspen, Ashcroft was a testament to its productive silver mines. Those deposits were soon depleted and rail links failed to materialize. By 1885, there were only 100 summer residents and the town was nearly bankrupt. Its fortunes rose and fell again in the early 20th century, and thanks to an interested owner, the town was protected and ecologically restored. Today, it is managed by the Aspen Historical Society.

Travelers who visit the site today can take self-guided tours of Ashcroft Ghost Town, which includes an old saloon, a hotel and a post office. Recent visitors enjoyed this short trip, with many noting that the scenic drive to it is as memorable as the visit. There are only a handful of buildings, but there are also nearby trails and scenic spots for photographs and picnics.

Sitting just north of Main Street on Hallam Lake, this research center and 25-acre wildlife sanctuary works to educate visitors about Aspen's natural surroundings while preserving local flora and fauna. While here, you can attend wildlife workshops, tag along on a winter snowshoe walk and even come face-to-face with America's favorite bird, the bald eagle. Borrow the center's binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for deer, elk, foxes, coyotes, bears, beavers and hawks. If you're visiting with children, consider signing them up for one of the kid-friendly arts and crafts classes or nature hikes. Little ones may also be fascinated by the indoor animal exhibits, which feature bearded dragons, salamanders and cockroaches, among other creatures.

Fellow nature lovers say that the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies is the place to go to get to know this town's wilder side, and many visitors are quick to praise the facility for its environmental protection efforts. 

John Denver Sanctuary John Denver Sanctuary free

Anyone who's a fan of John Denver's music knows that the famous singer-songwriter was a big fan of Aspen; he immortalized the town's beauty and character in several of his songs, including his famous "Aspenglow." The town decided to pay tribute to its favorite musician (who died in 1997) with the John Denver Sanctuary, a memorial nestled near the Aspen Art Museum in Rio Grande Park along the Roaring Fork River. The memorial is composed of several stone slabs bearing the musician's name and some of his lyrics.

Past travelers strongly recommend a visit, even if you're not a diehard Denver fan, noting the area's beautiful flower garden and the impressive inscribed river boulders. Others said it's a great picnic spot.

Aspen Art Museum Aspen Art Museum free

There is a myriad of cultural attractions in Aspen, and for contemporary art buffs, the Aspen Art Museum is worth a visit. Instead of a permanent collection, the museum focuses on displaying exhibitions across its six galleries. Several exhibits run concurrently; sometimes relating to Colorado and its natural beauty. The Aspen Art Museum also boasts a rooftop cafe, which occasionally features free musical events, as well as regular workshops indoors.

Heed the advice from past travelers and check how many exhibitions are running before you go. Some recent visitors noted empty galleries and polarizing exhibits. However, many appreciated the museum’s distinctive architecture, which was designed by Shigeru Ban. Of particular note was the museum rooftop, which offers unobstructed views of Aspen Mountain .

Wheeler Opera House Wheeler Opera House

Constructed in 1889 by business tycoon Jerome Wheeler, this opera house has been a major source of entertainment in the Roaring Fork Valley for more than a century. Today, this performance venue remains an Aspen gem, featuring an eclectic blend of Victorian-era architectural styles, beautiful decor and a stunning electric chandelier (Aspen was the first town west of the Continental Divide to be wired for electricity).

The theater still hosts regular events ranging from concerts to film screenings to plays, and according to recent travelers, you shouldn't turn down the chance to catch a show here. Visitors love the small, intimate theater and say that it makes for a cozy atmosphere with great acoustics.

North Star Nature Preserve North Star Nature Preserve free

Located in the White River National Forest, North Start Nature Preserve is a 175-acre conservation area that encompasses the Roaring Fork River, wetlands and many species of wildlife. A series of walking trails mean visitors might encounter moose, birds or beavers. Those wishing to stand-up paddleboard, canoe or kayak can do so on the river. During the winter, there is Nordic skiing along the 1.62-mile North Star Loop trail.

Visitors say that the trails and river are lovely during the summer. One traveler noted that this is an excellent birding spot, and that diverse species are viewable. It is important to be aware of moose, and to maintain a safe distance if they are spotted; moose can react aggressively when threatened.

Guide to visiting Aspen in Fall

For years now, I wanted to take a trip to see the the most beautiful fall colors. You see, while living in California has its perks like endless sunshine, we rarely get to see the seasons, especially autumn. I had researched some places in California but it just so happened that our friends were planning a trip to Colorado and we thought it would be great to spend time together and visit Aspen, Colorado.

Aspen had been on my list of places to visit for a while now. I used to watch the winter games in Aspen every year on TV. It is a mecca for winter sport lovers but also beautiful to visit any time of the year. My preference to visit had always been winter and fall. So when the opportunity to visit Aspen knocked on the door, I was overjoyed!

Aspen, a ski town and alpine paradise is about 3 hours drive from Denver. During the summer months, THE route to take is via the Independence Pass. The drive takes more time but so worth it for the scenic overviews along the way.

DRIVE TO ASPEN FROM DENVER

Colorado has the most stunning landscapes and this drive is no different. I was most amazed by the change in terrain and weather along the way. From sunny, flat Georgetown, we encountered rain, wind and snow, passed the highest point up on the mountains and ended up in Aspen amongst gorgeous fall foliage. The stops listed below are worthwhile if you plan to drive from Denver to Aspen.

George is a former silver mining camp and is nestled in the valley along Clear Creek. It is set in a perfect location with views of Georgetown lake on one side and Saxon, Griffith mountains on the other side. I bet Georgetown would look even more beautiful covered in white snow.

Independence Pass

To get to Aspen through this pass, you have to drive up and down the mountains. This is one of the most beautiful drives with snow-capped mountain ranges, coniferous pines, narrow winding roads and snowfall along the way. The drive was both thrilling and breathtaking. The highest point along the way is the Independence Pass at an elevation of 12,000ft. If you plan to drive this route, stop here for amazing views of the mountains. The views are incredible but it was so cold and freezing. So plan accordingly.

Just past Independence Pass are the twin lakes. Two lakes with mountains in the background make for stunning views and beautiful photos. This place can also be incredibly windy so hold on to your hats!

VISITING ASPEN IN FALL

Aspen is surrounded by mountains. It is every skier’s dream destination but also a great year round destination with lots of fun activities to do. Autumn is when the Aspen trees change their color and turn the town into a yellow fairy tale.

Best time to visit Aspen for peak fall colors is mid-late September. First week of October may be still be ok.

Things to know before you visit Aspen

• Aspen is expensive!! Book hotels early as it is can be outrageously expensive and the hotels also get sold out. If you are looking for cheaper options, look for Snowmass Village about 10 miles from Aspen.
• Aspen is easy to navigate and walk around. We spent our time exploring the town, reaching dead ends and clicked lots of photos of fall colors.
• There are lot of hiking opportunities if you wish to do.
• Restaurants can get pretty busy and might have a wait time during peak hours.
• Check the weather and prepare accordingly. While Aspen itself was not that cold, the surrounding sightseeing areas were windy and chilly.

Things to do in Aspen in Fall

The town of aspen.

The town is filled with Aspen trees changing colors during autumn. Take a stroll along the streets of Aspen to see beautiful fall foliage. 

Maroon Bells Park 

This is a must visit in Aspen. The Maroon Bells’ peaks, surrounded by forests all around, are apparently the most photographed peaks in all of North America. I saw a few pictures of these peaks before we went but none did justice to these majestic white caps. The reflection of the mountains on the lake, the yellow Aspens and the snow capped mountains were reminiscent of the peaks of the Andes. There are a lot of hiking opportunities in this park and one could spend a whole day exploring the wilderness here if you wish to.

Getting to Maroon Bells Park can be a little tricky  because personal vehicles are only allowed before 8am. After that, visitors have to drive to Aspen Highlands Ski Resort, park the cars there and take a bus that goes to Maroon Bells. It is not hard to figure out but something to make note of.

I highly recommend doing a short hike around the lake for gorgeous views while you are there!

Aspen Mountain and Gondola

If you would like to see breathtaking views of mountains all around, take the gondola and ride up the Aspen Mountain. The gondola ride takes 20-25min and the views up the top of the mountain are stunning! There is also a restaurant on the top with glass pane windows overlooking the mountains. It is a great place to sip some warm hot chocolate and enjoy magnificent views.

North Star Nature Preserve

This is a great trail with gorgeous yellow aspen trees to visit during Fall in Aspen. It is not too crowded and is a great place to have a fall photoshoot. Walk along the trail to find best spots with fall colors.

I reckon there are many more activities to do in Aspen but given the time we had, these were all we could do.  If you are looking to see majestic snow capped mountains, serene lakes, fall foliage or snowy winter destinations, Aspen should be high on the list any time of the year but especially during fall.

When Do the Aspens Change in Colorado?

The peak color of changing aspens only lasts for about a week in Colorado. However, the shoulder weeks bring to the state about a month of golds, greens, oranges, and reds from mid-September to mid-October. So, the best answer to the question, “When is the best time to see the fall colors of Colorado?” is best answered as, between September 15th and October 15th , but there will be an optimal 7-10 day period sometime within that date range. That optimal time when the aspen colors are most intense and brilliant, depends on four factors: temperature, moisture, sunlight, and altitude. For instance, a dry season will dull the fall colors. An early frost can cut short the season, too. The best kind of mountain weather requires a bit of moisture, gradually decreasing temperatures, and a good amount of sunlight.

If you are interested in why certain aspens turn red, orange, or yellow, or wonder why they change color in the first place, then read on. Why Do the Aspens Change Color in Colorado?

Let’s start off with the familiar. We know that the compound, chlorophyll, is what provides food to trees through the process of photosynthesis–and that chlorophyll is what makes leaves green. It helps to think of the power of Chlorophyll as similar to the intensity of the sun that blocks out the stars during the day. During the Spring and Summer, the other chemicals in a leaf that produce the yellows, oranges, and reds get overpowered by the green of chlorophyll. When the chlorophyll flow gets shut off in the Autumn, these other colors get to shine. This is triggered when trees respond to longer and colder nights by essentially blocking off the flow of chlorophyll into and out of the leaves. At this point, three other compounds get trapped in the leaf and begin to show their hues. Let’s take a look into each of the colors.

Why Do Aspens Turn Red?

Red is the most rare, and it is created by anthocyanins. These are generated by sugars that get locked into the leaves in the fall. You may notice that certain groves of aspens will turn red year after year, and that others will never turn red. Researchers as Colorado State University found that this is due in part to genetics: some apsens will produce anthocyanins and others just don’t. They also found that weather plays an important role. The reds will become more intense if the fall season starts out warm and sunny then gradually cools, without getting down to freezing at night.

Why Do Aspens Turn Yellow?

Another compound, Xanthophyll, creates the yellow tones in fall leaves. Going back to our sun and stars metaphor, Xanthophylls might be similar to the moon. Its yellow pigment can stand up to the intensity of the green in chlorophyll and can be seen year-round–similar to how you can often see the moon during the intensity of the day. However, once the chlorophyll is blocked, its golden hue radiates!

Why Do Aspens Turn Orange?

You probably guessed it, the orange is caused by another trapped compound with a funny name! Carotenoids (think carrots) produce and orange pigment–Go Broncos! Carotenoids are not as strong as xanthophylls, but they are more prevalent than their red cousins, the anthocyanins. That’s why you’ll see more oranges in the mountains than reds when the fall colors carpet the landscape.

Once all the yellows, oranges, and reds are spent, the only thing left are the tannins, which turn the leaves brown. Then comes the white of winter.

The Best Places to View Changing Aspens Near Denver

I’ve written an entire post with the Top 10 Best Fall Hikes Near Denver –check it out. But if you are looking for a quick guide, here are a few of my recommendations.

Drive: Guanella Pass Road to 285 to Kenosha Pass

Easy access from Denver; pick up Guanella Pass Road by taking interstate 70 to Georgetown, Colorado. The road winds up to the top of Guanella Pass, where hikers can get out and go for a light stroll, or make the demanding climb up the 14er, Mt. Bierstadt (prepare accordingly). The road continues over the pass and terminates at highway 285 in Grant, Colorado. Taking a right (going West) onto 285 leads to Kenosha Pass about 7.5 miles down the road. Kenosha Pass is arguably the best place to view the changing aspens within 90 minutes of Denver. Check out our Kenosha Pass and Guanella Pass Trail profiles for more details.

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park

Trail Ridge Road is further from Denver, but worth the drive. It will also require drivers to purchase a Rocky Mountain National Park pass. I find it most affordable to buy a yearly pass because I make multiple trips into the park each year. September is a great time to visit the park because the Elk are in rut and bugling. However, that does mean that the traffic in RMNP is high, so I recommend going on a weekday. Maroon Bells – Worth the Drive

Maroon Bells is about 4 hours from Denver, and if you have the time, it’s worth taking a long day-trip to witness the breathtaking landscape. There are several hikes around the Maroon Bells area and we’ve profiled them, as well as several campsite options, in our Ultimate Guide to Hiking Maroon Bells . Be sure to take time to read it because there is limited parking, an access fee, and you may need to take the shuttle to access the trailhead.

When are the best times to visit Colorado?

Knowing when the best time to visit Colorado completely depends on what you’re hoping to see. A trip to see a special summer Red Rocks concert requires visiting during a different season than showing up for skiing or checking out the state’s impressive display of fall foliage, for example.

The peak times to visit are undoubtedly summer and winter . So if you’re looking to escape the crowds and find some solitude, or perhaps more affordable accommodations, consider spring or fall for the less popular seasons.

You may think that fall is a super busy time to see the colors, but due to the high-elevation nature of the Rockies, leaves usually start turning earlier in September than the official autumn equinox around the 3rd week of the month. Though you can usually find colors at the very beginning of fall as well. The least visited months are April and May, as well as October and November.

To help you pin down the best time for your visit, here’s an annual timeline featuring some of the state’s most popular sites, activities, and attractions:

In January, winter recreation in the state hits its peak, so this is a perfect time for a trip if you’re planning on skiing, snowboarding , ice fishing, or sledding . This month typically brings a stellar array of winter events and festivals to the state, especially at Colorado’s ski resorts and mountain towns.

If you’re into playing or watching winter sports, Aspen’s Winter X Games is a can’t-miss competition featuring some of the world’s most talented skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers. January is typically Colorado’s coldest month, so keep this in mind and dress accordingly if you’re hoping to spend a lot of time outdoors during your visit.

Warmer than January on average but not my much, February is another ideal month for enjoying outdoor winter recreation in Colorado. But while skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and most other winter activities are in full swing during February, keep in mind that ice fishing season typically wraps up in Colorado in mid-February depending on the temperatures.

If you’re interested in scoping out the Mile High City’s food scene, Denver Restaurant Week takes place each February and offers an affordable way to try out hundreds of participating restaurants. Other notable Colorado events this month include the Lake City Ice Climbing Festival and the Steamboat Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs.

March is a month when snowy weather starts to subside in much of the U.S., but not Colorado. March is typically the state’s snowiest month, followed by April. This means that a spring break ski or snowboard trip is a fine way to spend some time off.  While this month usually brings a lot of snow , it also features higher temperatures that make getting out and about a little easier than during a month like January.

Celebrating St. Paddy’s Day in Denver or Boulder is always a blast, but there’s one event that happens in Colorado that you can’t experience anywhere else in the world: Frozen Dead Guy Days . This annual tradition celebrates a literal frozen dead guy with music, booze, and loads of bizarre games and contests. Check out other March events .

Traditionally, April is the last month of the ski and snowboard season in Colorado, though at least one resort is known for staying open much later when conditions allow. Along with the temperatures, the fishing season also warms up in April and hits its peak in late spring. This month is a good time to explore the biggest cities like Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs, as well as the state’s high country.

April features terrific annual events like the Taste of Vail and special music festivals throughout the state. If you’re a flower fan, this is the best time of the year to visit the Denver Botanic Gardens where 10,000 tulip bulbs burst into bloom.

With comfortable temperatures and everything in full bloom, May is an ideal time to visit Colorado for any reason. Fishing season is in full gear by this time, and the state’s mountains are a joy to experience in May. You might be surprised to learn that many locations in the state get pretty hot over the summer, but not during May. Waterfalls are also at their peak around this time of year due to raging rivers and Rocky Mountain snowmelt.

This is a time of year when you’ll be able to explore Loveland, Pueblo, and other cities along the Front Range comfortably, though you’ll still want to bring a jacket for chillier days, especially if you plan on visiting the mountains. Denver hosts some great festivals in May, including the Denver Arts Festival and the Cinco de Mayo Festival.

June is a glorious time to be in Colorado, with summer festivals in full swing and the weather in the mountains warming up for fishing trips, camping , rock climbing , and hiking . Towards the end of the month, the 14er season kicks off. In case you’re not familiar, 14ers are mountains that are 14,000 feet or higher, and the state has more than 50 of them to climb and conquer.

There are a ton of excellent festivals that are held in June, from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to the Greeley Stampede to A Taste of Colorado. If you’re looking for the most well-rounded Colorado experience you can get, planning a trip for June is not a bad way to go.

This is a great time to come to Colorado if you love music . In late July every year, South Broadway gets taken over by the Underground Music Showcase, a huge regional music festival that highlights local musical talent as well as burgeoning artists from around the world. There’s also the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, Bravo! in Vail, and the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to these beloved music events, there are loads of terrific concerts at Red Rocks every night throughout the summer.

One annual happening not to miss if you love nature is the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, featuring 80 hikes, alpine yoga classes, 4×4 tours, garden tours, photography, art & cooking classes, and a whole lot more. By this time of year, all the stunning season byways and mountain passes are open, which unlocks access to the whole state.

It gets quite hot along the Front Range Urban Corridor in August, especially in cities like Pueblo and Colorado Springs, but the weather in the mountains this time of year is incredible. This is a terrific time to plan that backpacking trip or whitewater rafting excursion you’ve always wanted to go on.

Some of the world’s most talented dancers converge on Vail this month for the Vail Dance Festival, while other mountain communities like Keystone, Breckenridge, Idaho Springs, and Crested Buttes hold stellar festivals of their own. In the southern part of the state, you’ll find the Telluride Mushroom Festival, and Boulder holds the International Fringe Festival, which features wonderfully weird art showcased in a plethora of mediums.

Drumroll please: Ladies and gentlemen, mid-September marks the beginning of fall foliage season in Colorado’s high country. Though it varies from season to season, this is generally the time of the year you’ll visit to see aspen leaves exploding into vibrant bursts of gold, and the colors typically stick around up until a month.

Autumn is a gorgeous time to visit not only Colorado’s mountains  but the rest of the state as well. With bright warm days and cool crisp nights, September is a magical time to check out places like Trinidad, Golden, or Longmont. Notable festivals this month include the Colorado State Fair & Rodeo in Pueblo, the Telluride Blue & Brews Festival, and tons of Oktoberfest celebrations that are held in mountain towns across the state.

The stunning gold foliage display in the high country typically continues from early October through the middle of the month, depending on elevation. The highest points will be all but finished by early October, so just head down a little and plan accordingly.

Colorado celebrates fall and Halloween with corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and other spooky events like the Telluride Horror Show, a horror film festival. The nation’s largest and most influential beer gathering typically takes place early this month, which is Denver’s Great American Beer Festival. Sometimes it’s held in late September.

By this point in the year, the mountains begin to get cold and snowy, so something like a camping trip probably won’t be comfortable without the right gear and outdoor experience.

Most ski resorts open their slopes for business in the middle of November, a month that brings an array of cultural events to the state. From the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival to Denver Fashion Week to the Colorado Springs Record Show, November is a good time to take in arts and culture in Colorado .

In the higher parts of the state, opportunities for snowshoeing , cross country skiing , and snowmobiling open up depending on the weather.

With unforgettable winter train rides , mountain festivals like Vail Snow Days and Urll Fest, and festive holiday parades, Colorado goes all out to celebrate winter and the holiday season each December. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, check out the Holiday Chocolate Festival in Colorado Springs, or if you’re looking for an alternative to the typical holiday celebrations, consider warming things up with art, fire, and community at the Telluride Fire Festival.

Unless you plan on moving to Colorado , and many, many people do every year, there’s no way to see and do everything here in a week or even a month. This means that the best times to visit depend on what activities and sights are most important to you. Happy travels!

10 Best Things To Do In Colorado

W ith its breathtaking mountains, stunning national parks, scenic drives, historic sites, and toasty hot springs, Colorado offers visitors a bevy of things to do all year round. I’ve been fortunate to live in this beautiful state for 29 years. While I can’t say I’ve traversed every nook and cranny, I’ve certainly road-tripped to the most beloved attractions that continually wow visitors. Here’s my take on the 10 best things to do in Colorado.

1. Maroon Bells

Among the most photographed mountains in North America are the Maroon Bells . Located just a 10-mile drive from downtown Aspen, these 14,000-foot peaks — so named for their color and shape — loom over a pristine lake. Viewing these magnificent mountains is a must-do when visiting Aspen . If you’re game for a high-altitude hike, traipse around base trails. The scene is especially alluring in the fall when area aspen trees turn gold. 

Pro Tip: Between mid-May and the end of October, you’ll need to make a parking reservation to drive your own car to the Maroon Bells Scenic Area. Or you can book a shuttle ride.

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

Having visited 35 of 63 national parks in the United States, Rocky Mountain National Park is easily among my top five. It showcases Colorado’s quintessential jagged mountain peaks and evergreen wilderness, but it also offers glacial lakes for fishing, horseback riding trails, and opportunities for viewing wildlife, including elk, marmots, bighorn sheep, and moose. 

Be sure to drive Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States at 12,183 feet in elevation. Snowdrifts close it in the winter, but it’s typically open between the end of May through October. Pull off at the Alpine Visitor Center for vast views from what feels like the top of the world. 

Pro Tip: The mountain town of Estes Park is the popular gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and can get quite congested in the summer and fall. To avoid crowds, enter from the western side of the park near Grand Lake . 

3. Pikes Peak

In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates ascended Pikes Peak by prairie wagon and mule. She gazed out into the vast wilderness, inspiring her to write “America the Beautiful.” Today, traveling to the top of this 14,115-foot mountain in Colorado Springs isn’t quite so primitive. Instead, you can drive a 19-mile winding paved road to the summit. If you prefer to leave the driving to someone else, hop aboard the historic Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway . Train conductors deliver entertaining and educational commentary along the way.

Pro Tip: The temperature can vary by 30–40 degrees Fahrenheit from the base to the summit. Be sure to wear layers. Also, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help avoid altitude sickness as you ascend the mountain.

4. The Springs Resort

A visit to Colorado is not complete without a soak in its world-renowned hot springs. A stint in mineral waters not only soothes sore muscles after a day of adventuring outdoors, it’s said to enhance sleep and reduce inflammation. The Springs Resort in Pagosa Springs is a great way to get introduced to hot springs, as you can choose from among 25 different riverside pools of varying temperatures. Feeling bold? Take a dip in the chilly San Juan River then warm up in the toasty Lobster Pot!

Pro Tip: If your trip to Colorado doesn’t take you to Pagosa Springs, there are plenty of other hot springs to choose from. Check out the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop website for ideas. 

5. Denver Museum Of Nature And Science

I’ve been taking my children to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science since they were toddlers, and now my biology-loving 23-year-old daughter often visits on her own when she’s in the state capital. Dinosaur fossils, Egyptian mummies, planetarium shows, spaceships, and a new Infinity Theater showing big-screen 3D films are among the permanent attractions that wow all ages.

Pro Tip: Check out the website to learn about any temporary exhibits before you visit. Sometimes, special traveling exhibits require additional admission .

6. Vail Scenic Gondola

You don’t have to be a skier or snowboarder to ascend to the top of Vail Mountain and enjoy the jaw-dropping vistas of the Gore Range. In the winter months, you can purchase tickets solely to ride the enclosed Eagle Bahn Gondola or Gondola One to the top and then back down again. 

However, my favorite time of year to visit mountain towns is the summer, when blue skies and moderate, dry temperatures prevail. Ride the Vail Summer Scenic Gondola to the top and then hike through aspen trees, across green meadows, and amid wildflowers. 

Pro Tip: Multiple statewide ski resorts transform into summer playgrounds in the warm-weather months with not only gondola rides but alpine slides and ziplines. Other options are Snowmass , Breckenridge , and Steamboat Springs for fun, high-altitude adventures.

7. Million Dollar Highway

Silverton and ouray.

One of the most spectacular drives in Colorado — perhaps in the United States — is a 25-mile stretch of Highway 550 between the towns of Silverton and Ouray . The “ Million Dollar Highway ” is not for the faint of heart. In sections, steep drop-offs and twisty switchbacks can freak out inexperienced mountain-pass drivers (and passengers). Just take it slow and stop at the pull-outs to fully enjoy the panoramic vistas that unfold around every corner. 

Pro Tip: Ouray is one of my favorite Colorado small towns and worth an overnight. While the Ouray Hot Springs Pool is especially fun for kids with its climbing wall, inflatable obstacle course, and water slides, also consider a Wiesbaden Hot Springs day pass (or sleep at the lodge) to steam in the vapor caves.

8. Mesa Verde National Park

Montezuma county.

Mesa Verde National Park in southwest Colorado offers visitors an extraordinary opportunity to walk through cliff dwellings that the Ancestral Puebloans built more than 700 years ago. Entering the stone and earth dwellings built under rock overhangs does involve climbing ladders. If your mobility allows, the ranger-led tours of the cliff homes provide excellent insight into how this ancient culture once lived on the mesa. 

The park also has self-guided itineraries that allow you to view and learn about ceremonial and living structures, plus myriad hiking trails . 

Pro Tip: Ticketed time slots for tours of the cliff dwellings are available online 14 days in advance from mid-May to October. Be sure to book your reservation to avoid disappointment.

9. Colorado National Monument

Colorado may be known for its towering, jagged mountain peaks that remain snow-covered much of the year. But the far-western part of the state is composed of desert-like cliffs, mesas, and towers. A great place to take in this sandstone and red-rock landscape is Colorado National Monument in Fruita, about 25 miles from the Utah border. 

For the most impressive views, take the 23-mile Red Rock Rim Drive all the way through the park. Like the state’s other iconic drives, it does take a winding route with some sheer drop-offs — a warning if you’re not a fan of heights. 

Pro Tip: Fruita is about 25 miles from Palisade in Colorado’s wine country — worth the trip if you like to sip and savor surrounded by scenic mesas. Rent an e-bike to cycle along the Fruit & Wine Byway , not only to check out vineyards and tasting rooms but to visit fruit orchards and lavender farms.

10. Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine

Cripple creek.

The Colorado Gold Rush in 1859 and Colorado Silver Boom in 1879 lured thousands of fortune-seekers to Colorado — the large majority of them men. The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine was one of the few strikes claimed by a woman.

Today, visitors can learn all about this Cripple Creek gold discovery on an hour-long tour that includes descending 1,000 feet underground on a mine shaft. Also see gold veins in their natural state and ride an underground tram locomotive. Wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and strollers aren’t allowed.

Pro Tip: Cripple Creek legalized gambling in 1991 to encourage tourism in the area. If you’re a fan of the slots or blackjack tables, you can walk between nine different casinos in the historic downtown.
