• Going Across Canada by Bicycle
 • Travel Planning Tips & Links

Going by Bicycle

Our Route Itineraries now include elevation charts, so you can see how hilly a segment is, and plan your rest stops appropriately. The Canadian Cycling Association has a great book about touring by bike (Elliott Katz, 1994), though for a variety of reasons, they take significant detours off the Trans-Canada.

There are a couple of stretches that are high traffic divided highway were cyclists are not allowed: Highway 1 in BC’s lower mainland between Lion’s Bay and Hope, Highway 417 in and around Ottawa, along highways 400 and 401 to/from Toronto, and Quebec’s highways 20 & 40 from Ontario through to Quebec City.

Cycling Route Detours

Because the Tran-Canada is relatively high traffic, there are some adjustments recommended to the route, especially if cycling alone, without a “chase” or “pack” vehicle. May cross-Canada cycling treks have such a vehicle for logistical reasons.

 • In BC’s Lower Mainland, bicycles are not permitted on Highway 1 , since it is classified as divided highways, and cyclists should travel on Route 7 on the north shore of the Fraser. This route takes riders from Coquitlam to Mission to Hope .
 • From Hope , the CCA recommends following The Crowsnest Highway #3 though Manning Park and along the south edge of the Okanagan east to Castlegar and then scoot north on Highway #6 to Revelstoke ,
 • BC Goverment restrictions on Cyclists in a nutshell: Stay off the #1 between Horseshoe Bay and Hope (we’ve mapped the detours)
 • In Western Alberta, from Canmore , take Highway 1A, which takes a leisurely and very path along the north bank of the Bow River past Mount Yamnuska, Morley , and Ghost Lake into Calgary (with only one big hill east of Cochrane), into Calgary . From Cochrane , you can take the cycling path through the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park… the pathway roughly follows the railway tracks and is missing a 1km segment just at city limits, but you can walk (pay attention!) along the railway right of way to the City of Calgary pathway inside the city limits which you can follow along the Bow River and then along the Western Irrigation District canal to Lake Chestermere east of the city, which lies right on the Trans Canada Highway.
 • At Strathmore , east of Calgary, CCA recommends heading north, then east on highway #9, which takes you through Drumheller (Scenic, historical, but with hills), and then east across the flat Alberta prairie past Oyen to Alsask on the border.
 • In western Saskatchewan, #9 turns into #44, which connects to 342, which connects to #4 to Swift Current , back on the Trans-Canada
 • In Manitoba, most of the Trans-Canada is avoided, by taking #83 north to Minota, #24 east to Rapid City, #10 north to Minedoa, and #16 east to Portage La Prairie , From there, take #26 which detours north through Poplar Point, ending up on the western outskirts of Winnipeg .
 • East of Winnipeg head along #15 east to Elma and then #44 through Whiteshell Provincial Park past Falcon Lake , finally hitting the Trans-Canada at the Ontario border
 • From Kenora , take #71 south to Fort Frances on the Minnesota USA border, only to head south and then east along the well-settled south shore of Lake Superior to Sault Ste Marie . This avoids a very remote road, with narrow shoulders and heavy truck traffic, as well as a stretch with lots of carnivorous wildlife (like bears) which can make roadside camping awkward.
 • From Espanola , a bit west of Sudbury, head south via Manitoulin Island , taking the ferry from Baymouth to Tobermory , and down the Bruce Peninsula to Owen Sound , and then east on country roads through Orillia , Bancroft and Renfrew in the lush Ottawa River Valley.
 • From Renfrew head along #3 and then #5 alongside the River, avoiding the very heavily trafficked 417 divided highway into Ottawa . In Ottawa follow the Sir John A Macdonald Ottawa River Parkway into the city.
 • East of Ottawa take the old highway #17, again avoiding the 417 divided highway, and crossing into Quebec over the Ottawa River at Hawkesbury to Grenville, and then follow scenic #344 along he Ottawa River southeast into Montreal , via Oka.
 • Ontario rules for bikes and e-bikes In a nutshell: Stay off any “400 series” highway, the Queen Elizabeth Way, the Queensway in Ottawa, or the Kitchener-Waterloo Expressway.
 • East of Montreal head along the south shore of the St Lawrence along#132 all the way to Levis, across the river from Quebec City. This avoids the busy AutoRoute #20 on the south shore and the #40 on the north shore. A very wise move, considering the reputation of that province’s drivers.
 • From Levis , take #132 east along the south bank to Riviere du Loup , where you connect to #185, the Trans-Canada into New Brunswick.
 • From Grand Falls , New Brunswick, take route #105 down the east bank of the might Saint John River, instead of the busy #2 Trans-Canada Route. This will take you all the way to Fredericton .
 • From Sussex, NB , take #114 southeast along the Fundy Coast, and then up the Peticodiac River to Moncton . From Moncton, take #106 closer to the waterway than the #2 highway, into Sackville on the Nova Scotia border.
 • Instead of crossing western Nova Scotia, they recommend taking the scenic route through PEI, taking the ferry from Woods Islands to Caribou .
 • From Caribou, take #245 and #337 along the Northumberland Strait to Antigonish , and country road #4 instead of the busy Trans-Canada #104, crossing the Canso Causeway at Ault Cove, from which point there is only one road through Cape Breton .
 • Through Newfoundland, there is only one route. No detours are possible.

Item 9 is not a possibility for those precluded from entering the United States, who have a criminal record (in some cases even an arrest record), or who did not apply for a Visitors Visa in advance (this applies to citizens of countries other than Canada, and some Canadian citizens who were born in certain other countries – their rules, not ours!)

Ontario & Alberta require bicycle helmets for riders under 18 years. Other provinces have all-ages legislation requiring bike helmets behind New Brunswick (1995), British Columbia (1996), Nova Scotia (1997) and Prince Edward Island (2002). Both BC and Nova Scotia helmet legislation also includes inline skates and scooters.

E-bikes are generally treated the same as un-motorized bicycles, and have a maximum speed of 30 km/h. See detailed e-bike discussion by Fight Your Tickets.

Cycling in Canada

Bike touring

With every type of landscape from plains and lakeshores to mountains and coastlines, cycling in Canada is a richly-rewarding experience. Many cities and towns have large parklands with traffic-free loops ideal for riding with children or to simply enjoy a spin. Away from settlements, the diverse landscapes are your playground where you can take on epic adventures, challenging yourself on mountain roads or spin through vast forests without a car in sight.

Some of the best cycle routes in Canada are part of the Rails-to-Trails scheme which sees former railways converted into fantastic cycle paths. You can even ride across the entire country on the recently opened Trans Canada Trail. No matter whether you’re riding blissful loops around Vancouver’s Stanley Park or pedalling across the great prairies, every ride will be blessed with beautiful views, Canadian charm and a sense of freedom.

Testimonials

Tour Atlantic starts in Halifax

Riders for Tour Atlantic meet in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We encourage participants to arrive a few days early to explore this historic port city. There will be an afternoon orientation session before the first riding day.

Leaving Halifax we travel along Nova Scotia's south shore through Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg, a World Heritage Site and home port to the Bluenose II. The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove is a Canadian icon and the Bluenose is the famous sailing ship that's the image on Canada's 10-cent coin. From Lunenburg we cross through central Nova Scotia to the Annapolis Valley and a district immortalized by Ernest Buckler in The Mountain and The Valley, a landmark Canadian novel.

We head overland to the Annapolis Valley

Our route goes through Annapolis Royal, once a French garrison town and later a British garrison during the colonial era of European settlements in North America. That naval port atmosphere is still there today in this historic village.

Ferry to New Brunswick

We take the ferry from Digby across the Bay of Fundy to Saint John, where our route crosses a bridge over the reversing falls created by the Fundy Basin's world record tides.

Heading east after our rest/ferry day, we go through Fundy National Park and visit the Hopewell Rocks, unique formations created by tidal erosion that also are known as the Flowerpot Rocks. We travel through Moncton and go past the Big Lobster in Shediac on the way to to Prince Edward Island.

Crossing over to Prince Edward Island

Our ride leads to the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island, the birthplace of Canadian Confederation. On the ride to Charlottetown there is a side trip to the birthplace of Lucy Maud Montgomery, whose Anne of Green Gables has become an enduring symbol of the Canadian spirit. We have a rest day in Charlottetown and time to visit the place where the Fathers of Confederation gathered to create the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. You could also stop by Cows, perhaps Canada's best known ice cream shop.

On to Cape Breton

We leave P.E.I. by ferry, returning to Nova Scotia and then cross the causeway onto Cape Breton, famous for its Celtic music, its hospitality and its scenery. You will see the scenery at its most spectacular from lookoffs along the Cabot Trail. We do a clockwise loop on the trail to reach Baddeck, where Alexander Graham Bell's summer home is now a museum and where Canada's first airplane, the Silver Dart, had its maiden flight a century ago. We'll have a celebration dinner in Baddeck before our final riding day to Sydney.

Our unique selection of itineraries draws upon some of the country’s most inspiring landscapes, incredible networks of trails, and stunning national parks, showcasing communities along the way. Our wide range of accommodations include our selection of friendly bed & breakfasts, charming inns, perfectly-located hotels, and quiet cottages or cabins. Our drivers are local, professional, and full of information which they are eager to share as they take you to the trailheads and move your luggage ahead to the next overnight stay. We provide you with sectional maps, an emergency hotline, and a customized route booklet with detailed local information and the inside scoop on where to eat, visit, and explore each day. Each itinerary has been tried and tested with every detail accounted for, so that all you need to do is spend the day exploring at your own pace, to your heart’s content. And, as most of our trips include a donation to the local non-profit organization who builds and maintains the trail, by travelling with Great Canadian Trails you are also helping others get out and experience Canada’s natural wonders.

The natural environments that you'll travel through are fragile and the cultures and traditions precious. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence, protect what is precious and where we can leave a positive impact.

Discovery & Cruising

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures rarely involve camping.

Adventure Touring

These adventure tours may visit remote areas where facilities are often basic. Some of these trips involve camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will sometimes involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

These trips involve trekking or walking, cycling, or paddling for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace and should never be misinterpreted to mean they are easy trips. Hikes are mainly on well-defined trails with undulating terrain and cycling is on mostly flat surfaces.

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity with some moderate components. Hiking trips typically require carrying a daypack only, but could involve carrying a pack of up to 20 pounds (9kg), depending on personal gear.

These adventures involve trekking, cycling, or paddling for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace. Many moderately graded hiking trips involve the carrying of a daypack only, though some may involve carrying a backpack of up to 30 pounds (14kg), depending on personal gear. Hikers should be prepared for plenty of roots, rocks, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and potential variable weather conditions. Cyclists should be prepared for undulating terrain and some steep hills.

Moderate to Challenging

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity with some challenging components. Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

Challenging

These adventures involve trekking, cycling or paddling in remote areas in variable weather conditions for up to 8 to 10 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up to 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

These journeys of discovery and cruises are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

To enjoy these adventures, we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude.

Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Our introductory trips are not ‘easy’ trips and you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for 3 months leading up to your trip.

On these adventures you will need a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week from a minimum of 3 months leading up to your trip. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a 15lb daypack is highly recommended at least once per week.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week and extended periods of exercise during the weekend. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a full day pack is strongly recommended at least once per week (or a 30lb pack for backpacking trips).

These trips require an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, four to five times per week for three to six months leading up to departure. Hill walking with a full pack in variable weather conditions or on/off road cycling is essential.

On these adventures, you will need to be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions, have an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

The exact inclusions and equipment for each of our adventures is listed once you've found the trip you want. Our trips are generally more inclusive than others in the market place in line with our philosophy of minimising 'extra payments' displayed outside of the main trip price as well as out of pocket expenses once you reach your destination.

Read on and we'll show you how to watch the Tour of the Alps 2024 live streams from anywhere with a VPN , and potentially for FREE .

The race starts in Italy then heads north into Austria before returning to finish back in Italy five days later, all set in the stunning mountain scenery.

Last year's winner Tao Geoghegan-Hart is absent so in his place his new team Lidl-Trek are sending a twin attack of Giulio Ciccone and Juan Pedro Lopez. His old team Ineos Grenadiers will this time be hoping the veteran Geraint Thomas will be able to challenge for the win and bring them another victory to keep the title in house.

Ineos are also sending their time trial ace Filippo Ganna but he won't be challenging for the overall just working in a support role for Thomas to help him fend of the challenge from the likes of Romain Bardet (Team DSM Firmenich-PostNL), Lennard Kämna (Bora-hansgrohe) and Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost).

Read on for where to watch Tour of the Alps 2024 cycling action live, wherever you are in the world.

Tour of the Alps 2024 stages

The 709 kilometre race starts in Neumarkt/Egna with a 133km stage that features three moderate climbs, firstly the ascent of Andalo followed by two ascents of the smaller and steeper 4.3 km Penone climb on the finishing circuit.

Stage two sees the race leave Salurn/Salorno in Italy and cross over into Austria to finish in Stans. The first half of the stage is predominantly all uphill and the second half all downhill, although punctuated by a couple of nasty little ramps which could provide a launch pad for attacks.

Set in Austria stage three is just 124.8 kilometres long with the majority of it rolling until the finale which features twin ascents of the Weerberg and Pillberg climbs. Both are very steep with gradients in the mid teens which will encourage those riders who like punchy short climbs to try and break free and take the stage.

Back in Italy stage four is the Queen stage and boasts multiple climbs including the two first category ascents of the Passo del Compet and Passo del Vetriolo. This is the day the GC contenders will have to show what they are made of and use their superior climbing power if they want to win overall.

The race wraps up with another killer stage of climbing and another first category ascent, the Palù del Fersina which will be ridden twice to give fans two glances of their heroes. At 118 kilometres it is another very short stage but is a worthy stage to decide the winner of the 2024 race.

Itzulia Basque Country 2024 live stream — VPN statement

Simon Warren has been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France. Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. This resulted in his 2010’s best-selling 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs , followed to date by 14 more guides to vertical pain. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. He hosts talks, guides rides, has written columns for magazines and in 2020 released his first book of cycling routes, RIDE BRITAIN . Simon splits his time between working as a graphic designer and running his 100 Climbs brand and lives in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District with his wife and two children.

In Canada Even Weekend Road Trips Are Epic

Posted: October 6, 2023 | Last updated: October 6, 2023

When it comes to road-tripping, there’s a lot of ground to cover in Canada. It’s best to discover the world’s second-largest country bit by bit, with short road trips that reveal what makes each of the country’s provinces and territories unique. All 25 of these Canadian adventures can easily be taken over the course of a weekend.

Hit the road

While it’s only 129 miles (207km), this east-to-west drive along the Pacific Rim Highway that cuts across the center of Vancouver Island, takes about three hours to complete due to the windy nature of the road. Even then, travelers may want to give themselves even more time to visit the sandy beaches of Parksville, the fishing town of Port Alberni, and the lush forests and waterfalls found along the way.

British Columbia: Nanaimo to Tofino

Even though it’s on the same island, the rainforest-laden west coast of Vancouver Island feels like a different world, with the ferocious Pacific Ocean attracting surfers and “storm-watchers” who travel out specifically to watch the waves crash in. Both Tofino and Ucluelet to its south are laid-back communities, full of cool restaurants, shops, breweries and relaxing places to stay.

British Columbia: Vancouver to the Fraser Valley

The river valley makes for some of the most fertile farmland in Canada and many local food producers welcome visitors for either formal or self-guided tours. History lovers can also stop at the Fort Langley National Historic Site, an interpretive center that served as a working Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading post 150 years ago.

History lovers can also stop at the Fort Langley National Historic Site , an interpretive center that served as a working Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading post 150 years ago.

Just the name of the road from Vancouver to Whistler – the Sea to Sky Highway – is enticing. The route, which actually terminates just north of Whistler in Pemberton is only 101 miles (163km) long, but it’s worth slowing down and taking the time to drink in the coastal views and stop to learn about British Columbia’s rich Indigenous history from the Cultural Journey interpretive kiosks posted along the way.

Whistler itself is a world-famous tourist destination beloved by winter sports enthusiasts, but there are other points of interest in between Vancouver and the mountain resort town. The area around Squamish is full of opportunities for mountain biking and other outdoor adventures and the Sea-to-Sky gondola is a great way to get a bird's-eye-view of Howe Sound.

British Columbia: Kelowna to Osoyoos

While the lakes and surrounding desert-like landscapes are beautiful, the geography of the area is also prime for grape growing. The highway is dotted with wineries, many of which offer tours and tastings to the public. The famed Golden Mile Bench, BC’s first official wine sub-region sits on the southern part of the journey between Oliver and Osoyoos, featuring wineries like Culmina Family Estate, Tinhorn Creek and Road 13.

Discover what else to see in the Okanagan with our guide

Banff is already a nice weekend road trip from the much larger city of Calgary, but one of the most dramatic drives in all of Canada is the 145-mile (233km) journey along the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise (which is a short drive west of Banff) to the town of Jasper in Jasper National Park. Drivers can stop at viewpoints to see the turquoise waters of Bow Lake and Peyto Lake and are likely to also spot bighorn sheep and other wildlife near the road.

Alberta: Banff to Jasper

The Icefields Parkway gets its name from the Columbia Icefield, the largest ice field in the Rocky Mountains. One of the Icefield’s “toes,” the Athabasca Glacier, can be accessed at about the halfway point of the journey, with its edge within walking distance of the main road. The glacier can be further explored via an on-site discovery center, snow coach tours, and the Glacier Skywalk, a glass-floored platform that juts out 918 feet (280m) over the Sunwapta Valley. Find out more about Canada's beautiful national parks with our guide.

Alberta’s Bar U Ranch National Historic Site offers a rare hands-on picture of Canada’s Wild West. The ranch dates back to the late 1800s and now offers interactive learning experiences to help visitors understand what life would have been like for Western Canada’s pioneering cowboys and cattle ranchers. The ranch is near the village of Longview, in the heart of Alberta’s still very active cattle ranching country.

While Bar U Ranch is a worthy destination, the real treat is the drive along the southern leg of the Alberta Provincial Highway 22, otherwise known as The Cowboy Trail. The picturesque road rolls through the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, past towns like Millarville, Bragg Creek and Turner Valley. Each stop is filled with authentic cowboy culture, as well as unique places to eat, shop and visit.

Alberta: Edmonton to Drumheller

Those seemingly extraterrestrial hills also conceal a treasure trove of prehistoric fossils, making Drumheller the dinosaur capital of Canada. The Royal Tyrrell Museum is a world-class paleontology center, full of awe-inspiring dinosaur exhibits. For something a little less serious, the World’s Largest Dinosaur sits at the visitor center in downtown Drumheller. Guests can climb a stairway inside of the dinosaur and stand in its open mouth to get a better view of the town. You can find more brilliant destinations for dinosaur fans here too.

Brilliant destinations for dinosaur fans

It’s easy to get just about anywhere by road in the southern part of Canada, but building roads in the Arctic is tricky business. Getting from Inuvik to the Arctic Ocean previously was only possible by plane or a winter-only ice road, but in 2017 the 86-mile (138 km) Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway opened, allowing visitors to drive directly to the Inuvialuit hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk. The road is rugged and somewhat difficult to drive, but it is the first Canadian all-weather road to the Arctic Ocean.

Northwest Territories: Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk

Once in Tuktoyaktuk (or “Tuk” as locals call it), visitors will find a small but friendly community of people who still routinely conduct whale and caribou hunts. The land is cold, but also beautiful, with large ice-cored hills called pingos cropping up in the frigid ocean near the shore. There aren’t many hotels or restaurants in Tuktoyaktuk, so visitors tend to head back to Inuvik after exploring the town and dipping their toes in the Arctic Ocean.

Saskatchewan: Regina to Moose Jaw

Moose Jaw is one of Canada’s more well-known cities, not because it’s particularly big and bustling, but because of its uniquely Canadian name. The municipality leans into its reputation – it actually has dubbed itself “Canada’s Most Notorious City.” The drive from Saskatchewan’s capital city Regina is a fairly quick one at just 44 miles (71km), but it does lead drivers through some spectacular Saskatchewan farmland.

Even as Saskatchewan’s fourth-largest city Moose Jaw itself is fairly small, but it’s full of friendly Moose Javians, classic prairie architecture, parks and trails, and a series of signature murals. The city also has a series of underground tunnels that were used by Chinese railway workers fleeing persecution and bootleggers running rum during Prohibition. Finally, no visit to Moose Jaw is complete without a glimpse of Mac, who remains the world’s largest moose sculpture.

Saskatchewan: Saskatoon to Great Sand Hills

Situated in the middle of the prairie near the Alberta/Saskatchewan border, the Great Sand Hills are a series of golden sand dunes that look like they should be in the middle of a great desert. The dunes are constantly moving and the area is also a popular spot for bird watching. Those looking to make a weekend trip out of it can stay in nearby Leader, a small and charming prairie town.

Yukon: Whitehorse to Dawson City

Dawson City is worth visiting as the center of the historic Klondike gold rush. Full of museums, historic cemeteries, hiking trails, outdoor adventure, and opportunities to pan for gold, it’s one of Yukon’s key destinations. Located about halfway between the southern edge of Yukon and the Arctic Ocean, just east of the Yukon/Alaska border, Dawson is also an excellent place to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Manitoba: Winnipeg to Gimli

Gimli Harbour is home to a busy marina that serves recreational boats as well as fishing vessels, which both make up an important part of the area’s economy. Gimli is also known for its robust Icelandic heritage, culminating each year in an Icelandic Festival. That Icelandic culture is also represented by the Giant Viking, a 15-foot (4.6M) fiberglass statue that has stood in Gimli since 1967.

Ontario: Toronto to Niagara

Niagara-on-the-Lake is just north of Niagara Falls and is considered to be the official headquarters of Ontario wine country. The historic town is a perfect picture of charm, with plenty of unique shops, quaint inns, renowned restaurants and well-kept gardens. There are also about 40 wineries in the area, many of which are open to visitors who tour by bike or guided bus tour.

Ontario: Toronto to Muskoka

One of Ontario’s many lakeside cottage getaways, Muskoka is just a little more than a two-hour drive north of Toronto. It sits between Georgian Bay, which is part of the Canadian side of Lake Huron, and Lake Couchiching with approximately 1,600 smaller lakes scattered in between. All of that lakeside property gives visitors plenty of opportunities to relax or play by the water.

Discover Canada's lesser-known lakes

The town of Huntsville is the largest municipality in the Muskoka but most visitors just drive up to the region to experience the quiet of nature. While gazing at the peacefulness of the water from an Adirondack chair or going for a calming paddle in a canoe is enough for most city-dwellers, those who crave a little bit of human interaction can seek out some of the many places in the area to golf, hike, indulge in spa treatments, or go out for a gourmet meal.

Ontario: Windsor to Stratford

Stratford, located on the Avon River (it’s all named after the Stratford in the UK), is best known for its Shakespearean theater festival. The city was first settled in 1828 and its rich history is apparent at every turn. While theater is Stratford’s calling card, visitors can also take in various parks and gardens or hit the self-guided Stratford Chocolate Trail to try some treats. Stratford is also the former home of Justin Bieber and fans can download a map of the singer’s childhood haunts.

While city dwellers in southern Ontario flock to the areas around the Great Lakes for weekend downtime, many people from Ottawa head to Lanark County for their weekend downtime. The County’s best-known municipal center is the town of Perth, located just an hour southwest of Ottawa. Originally settled in 1815, Perth is a small town, but one that’s chock full of history.

Ontario: Ottawa to Perth

Today Perth is an enchanting town full of stone buildings, many of which sit on the pretty Tay River. The area is also beloved by outdoor enthusiasts, with the Rideau Trail, a 240-mile (387km) hiking trail network running right through the center of town. Visitors can also canoe, hike, bike or camp at the nearby Murphy’s Point Provincial Park.

Quebec: Montreal to Centre-du-Québec

Visitors will find centers like Drummondville and Victoriaville in the area, but it’s the smaller rural towns that make this trip truly special. It’s easy to find local cheese-makers (like the award-winning Fromagerie du Presbytère, located in a repurposed church) cideries, cranberry bogs, sugar shacks and breweries scattered throughout the countryside, for a literal taste of traditional Quebec culture.

Quebec: Quebec City to La Mauricie National Park

The natural beauty of La Mauricie is enough of an experience on its own, but the park is also near the city of Shawinigan, which sits right on the Saint-Maurice River. It’s also not far from the luxurious Baluchon eco-tourism resort, a secluded property that features a fine dining restaurant, outdoor activities and a Nordic spa.

The city of St. John is actually right on the shores of the Bay of Fundy, so this weekend road trip is about exploring the Bay itself. The Bay is famous for having the highest tides on Earth, reaching to about 52 feet (16m), far beyond the global average. The Bay touches both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and can be accessed by either province.

New Brunswick: St. John to the Bay of Fundy

The New Brunswick side of the Bay can be easily accessed from St. Martins, a 40-minute drive from St. John. From there, visitors can explore sea caves (at low tide) or go for a kayak. St. Andrews is also a good stop, with opportunities for whale-watching and seaside golfing. The famous Hopewell Rocks are also only a two-hour drive north from St. John.

Prince Edward Island: Central Coastal Drive

The Green Gables Shore features PEI’s most famed sites, particularly those connected to L.M. Montgomery’s beloved Anne of Green Gables novels. The route goes through the Cavendish area, which is home to the Green Gables house as well as some key museums. The Red Sands Shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed, full of small coastal villages and cozy coves.

Explore PEI with our full guide to the region

Cape Breton Island, a large island off the north coast of Nova Scotia, has a special place in Canadian culture, largely because of the traditional fiddle music that’s so tied to the island’s way of life. There’s no better way to see the island’s culture and stunning natural beauty than to take a drive along the Cabot Trail, a 185-mile (298km) loop that circles the northwestern part of the island.

Nova Scotia: Cabot Trail

The Cabot Trail is a spectacularly scenic drive that takes visitors through Cape Breton Highlands National Park and along the island’s dramatic coastline. The park offers plenty of opportunities to hike, but it’s just as nice to stay in the car and spot the lighthouses, coves and cliffs along the way. The Cabot Trail also attracts art lovers, with a number of small galleries and artist studios on the route.

Nova Scotia: Halifax to Lunenburg

The east coast of Nova Scotia is home to some of the most postcard-perfect towns in all of Canada, including the famously charming fishing village of Lunenburg. Founded in 1753, the town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its planned layout and traditional wooden architecture. Today Lunenburg is popular with tourists because of its history and delicious seaside seafood restaurants.

The drive from Nova Scotia’s capital city of Halifax is about 62 miles (99km) and can be completed in about an hour and 15 minutes, but it’s worth making a detour to Peggy’s Cove in St. Margarets Bay. Peggy’s Point Lighthouse is probably the most photographed lighthouse in all of Canada, while the rest of the site offers a glimpse of life in a traditional Maritime fishing village. Find out more about what to see in Nova Scotia.

What to see and do in Nova Scotia

Newfoundland’s Viking Trail is a 327-mile (526km) route that starts at Deer Lake and stretches northwards up the west coast of the island into Gros Morne National Park. One of Canada’s most spectacularly rugged national parks, Gros Morne is renowned for its fjords, fossil-rich hills and unique geological formations like the Tablelands, which are favored by hikers looking to explore the forces of continental drift.

Newfoundland and Labrador: Viking Trail

If Gros Morne isn’t enough, the Viking Trail continues northwards to L’anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, located at the tip of Great Northern Peninsula. Heading south from St. John’s, drivers can take a circular loop around the bottom part of the Avalon Peninsula. The 194-mile (312km) Irish Loop leads drivers through prime seabird and whale watching territory, where tours take off from the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve in search of humpback and minke whales. There are also ample hiking trails in the area, for those who would prefer to stop and explore the craggy shoreline by foot.

As they travel towards the bottom of the peninsula, visitors will find Ferryland, one of the oldest European settlements in North America, where archeologists have found remnants of homes built in the 17th century.
