3 Best Places For Bioluminescent Kayaking in Florida

August 21, 2023 //  by  Florida Trippers

If you’ve never gone bioluminescent kayaking in Florida , then you missing out!

Bioluminescence is one of the coolest natural phenomena in the world. Witnessing it is like seeing magic happening in the water.

Bioluminescent bay kayaking is a must for any bucket list!

So what is bioluminescence? Where does it happen? Can you see it in Florida?

Well have no fear, we’re here to explain and guide you to where you can go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida!

Our Pick: Best Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour In Florida

A wave of blue bioluminescent water on a beach in Florida.

What Is Bioluminescence In Florida And Why Is It Blue?

In short, bioluminescence is light produced by a living organism. If you’ve ever seen a firefly, you have seen bioluminescence!

The light is produced by energy released by chemical reactions inside the organism.

In the rivers and oceans of Florida, bioluminescence is not as rare as you might think! Actually, many kinds of animals, from the smallest of bacteria to the mightiest of sharks have some species that are bioluminescent!

We don’t know all of the functions of bioluminescence in all animals. While some deadly fish like anglerfish use it to lure their prey, most species found in Florida will only use bioluminescence as a form of communication. Mainly to warn or evade predators.

So why does the light in the water appear blue? If you paid attention in science class, light has different wavelengths. Thanks to its intermediate wavelength, blue light travels the fastest.

While animals do emit other colored lights, those with longer wavelengths (like red) and shorter wavelengths (like purple) are absorbed into the water and filtered out to the human eye. This is also why the ocean appears blue every day!

When Is The Best Time To See Bioluminescence In Florida?

Bioluminescent organisms love warm weather. You’re going to want to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida in the warmer summer months, after the sun has gone down of course!

Generally, the Florida bioluminescence season is from the middle of May through the summer until early October.

It is thought by scientists that you will see the most activity five days after the full moon of the month.

It is important to note that visibility is never guaranteed. That being said, your best chance of seeing the magic lights is two hours after the sun has gone down.

You’re going to want dark conditions, because the lights may be faint.

Plankton sparkle in the water, creating bioluminescence.

What To Pack When You Go Bioluminescent Kayaking In Florida

Because Florida has been lovingly referred to as a “lawless swamp” by its adoring natives, you need to be prepared. You are going to want to protect yourself from the elements, especially the bugs.

When choosing your apparel, it’s best to wear water or river shoes. You’re going to have to have to take your kayak out and you don’t want that river gunk or sand between your toes all night!

Fabrics that dry quickly are a must. You are going to be a little bit wet, and there’s nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable on a particularly swampy Florida night.

Do not wear bikini-style bathing suits or just trunks. In fact, long sleeves are highly recommended.

Besides long sleeves, you’re going to need more protection against insects. Bug repellant is a must and absolutely essential whenever you go out into bodies of fresh water in Florida. You need to protect yourself against those pesky mosquitos.

Because you’re kayaking at night, you definitely want to wear life vests and bring glow sticks, especially if you’re not going alone. If you’re not on a tour, it’s easy to get separated from your group, so some glow sticks should keep you lit just enough to still see the bioluminescence!

Consider packing a dry change of clothes and a towel to leave in the car. If you get more wet than you anticipated, you’ll want to be dry for your drive home at night.

The blue lights from plankton sparkle in the water.

Best Places For Bioluminescent Kayaking in Florida

While bioluminescence in Florida is rare, it does exist. You can mainly find the plankton and their magical lights on Florida’s Space Coast. If you’re not directly located near the East Coast or Central Florida, you will be in for a drive.

That being said, here are the best places to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida.

Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

On one of the prettiest islands in Florida  lies a 140,000-acre National Wildlife Refuge.

The land, originally acquired by NASA to build the John F. Kennedy Space Center, was designated a national reserve to protect these marshes, lagoons, and wetlands.

The best place to see bioluminescence in Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is Haulover Canal. Found right in the middle of the refuge, here you’ll have the best chance because the canal is hundreds of thousands of acres of nothingness. It will be pitch black with no light pollution!

Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is also a terrific place to see native Florida animals , like manatees and alligators .

If you want, you can spend the day seeing the animals and then come back at night to go blue water kayaking in Florida.

Indian River Lagoon

A group of three lagoons, the Indian River Lagoon is made up of the Mosquito Lagoon, the Banana River, and the Indian River.

Because its waterways are so isolated, it’s a perfect place to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida.

Off the Atlantic Coast of Florida, this is one of the most biodiverse places in the Northern Hemisphere! The Indian River Lagoon is home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals in addition to the plankton that causes bioluminescence.

Most kayaks launch from Mosquito Lagoon. As miserable as that sounds (remember when we said to pack bug spray?) this is your best chance to see bioluminescence in the Indian River Lagoon! You’ve been warned!

The sun sets over the Indian River Lagoon.

Cocoa Beach

Besides being a quaint beach town and one of the best surfing spots in all of Florida , Cocoa Beach and its shorelines aren’t just great for families .

They’re the last great place to catch a glimpse of bioluminescence in Florida!

For the best views, you’re going to want to venture around Cape Canaveral. Specifically, the Banana River Aquatic Preserve. Because it is flanked on both sides by nothing but roads with no major development, it is completely isolated!

Its isolated nature makes it perfect for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida! The most popular launch sites can be found along the Banana River, where there are many guided tours to take advantage of!

Cocoa Beach bioluminescence kayak tours will be a highlight of your Florida vacation!

Tips For Getting Good Photos Of The Blue Water

Bioluminescence is notoriously hard to capture on camera. In fact, a lot of tours will discourage you from trying to take pictures on your phone because you’ll waste so much time trying to get a shot that you’ll miss the beauty.

However, capturing the magical lights is not impossible. It can be tricky if you don’t have the right camera. The reason it’s so difficult is because the light emitted from the organisms is very dim!

For the best results, you’re definitely going to want to use a DSLR camera. Any premium low-light camera will do the trick.

You’ll want to use a smaller aperture (f/5) so the amount of light entering the camera is lower. This way the depth of focus is increased so you can capture more of the light.

The recent development in smartphone technology has made capturing bioluminescence easier, but it’s still not a piece of cake for an amateur.

While the camera quality has gone up, you’re still going to want to purchase an app that will utilize low-light technology.

Why St Augustine is The Best Place For This Type Of Tour.

What is Bioluminescence?

As great as our bio tours are, it is still a natural phenomena and intensity fluctuates from day to day. Bioluminescence occurs when living organisms produce and emit light. This can happen through a chemical reaction in the organism, or by bacteria that live on the surface of the organism. Many marine creatures are bioluminescent, including fish, jellyfish, and squid. Bioluminescence is often used as a way for these animals to attract mates, or to startle predators. Some land animals are also bioluminescent, like fireflies.

On a  kayak tour in St. Augustine, Florida , you can experience this amazing natural phenomenon up close. The only bioluminescent kayak tour operating in St Augustine takes place at night, when the water is filled with glowing plankton. As you paddle through the water, your kayak will leave a trail of swirling light around your paddle. Nets and collection cups are provided to catch and observe the bioluminescent Comb Jellies up close. It’s an unforgettable experience that everyone should try at least once!

A Florida summer thrill: Night-time kayaking in a bioluminescence glow

By: Author Bonnie Gross

Posted on Last updated: July 24, 2023

A bioluminescence kayak trip belongs on your bucket list

Just when I had decided that Florida summers were pure hell, I had one of those memorable experiences that makes the heat and humidity almost worth it: Kayaking at night on the Mosquito Lagoon experiencing the spectacular eerie glow of bioluminescence, Florida’s underwater light show.

During the summer, billions of plankton – dinoflagellates – in the water of Mosquito Lagoon emit a blueish-white glow underwater when they are disturbed. That means that every paddle of a kayak creates a wave of glowing light, every wake left by a neighboring boat has a glowing trail and, most excitingly, every splash of a mullet sets off a small light show.

As the sun sets over Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, kayaks are lined up ready to launch for a bioluminescence kayaking trip. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)

I had written about the bioluminescence kayaking trips run by A Day Away Kayak Tours years earlier and I finally got to go on one. Happily, it lived up to my expectations.

These bioluminescence kayaking trips cost $55 for adults, $45 if you bring your own kayak, or $75 for a clear kayak (per person.)

Kayakers meet at a sandy boat landing off the Haulover Canal in the middle of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Titusville, Florida.

My weeknight tour had two groups, each composed of 10 boats (mostly doubles, a few singles) with two tour leaders for each group.

A Day Away Kayak Tours runs a well-practiced, safety-oriented operation. Every kayaker wears a life preserver and is issued a whistle and a glow stick; it’s so dark out there, that’s the only way to really see each other. Each boat has a flashlight (only used to increase visibility should a motor boat come by.) Each boat is assigned a number and periodic countdowns ensure that all 10 boats are still together.

The two tour groups operate separately and once we launched, we never saw the other one.

Vultures in tree as Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge while waiting to go on a bioluminescent kayak trip. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)

The bioluminescence kayaking tour started at dusk and as it darkened and we paddled out of the Haulover Canal into a shallow lagoon, we began to see the bioluminescence glow of water with each of our strokes.

The paddling here is easy. The tour travels no great distance and once the group gets to the lagoon, each kayak is free to paddle off a bit and basically play with the water. The darker the area – along a darkly shaded shore, for example – the more vivid the cloud of light underwater.

I was endlessly amused waving my hand through the water and seeing my hand and its wake glow like a cold fire. I loved slapping the water with my paddle to create a splash of light.

But my all-time favorite bioluminescence effect was paddling into the middle of a huge school of sleeping mullets.

Hundreds of mullets woke up and did what mullets do – leaped through air and crash-landed in the water. Each leaping mullet created a splash of light. Mullets were popping like popcorn, creating a light show. Underwater, others streamed away, leaving streaks of light behind them. Meanwhile, it felt like it was raining mullets and the sound effects included fish thumping against boats and squeals from kayakers now sharing boats with trapped mullets flipping away.

Kayaking on Mosquito Lagoon in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge as the sun sets. (Photo: David Blasco)

Because bioluminescence kayaking requires dark and photography requires light, the phenomenon is virtually unphotographable. And I came to see that as a feature, not a bug.

I wasn’t distracted trying to get the picture. No posing for selfies in the middle of an incredible scene. It was just people in the moment experiencing something magical.

Tips about a bioluminescence kayaking trip in Florida

  • You will get wet . We kayak all over and rarely get wet, but on this trip, we both came home dripping. I’m not sure why: Maybe the darkness made us less conscious of water dripping off our paddles? Maybe other kayakers splashed us? Maybe the mullet did? I don’t know – but be prepared to get wet and don’t bring electronic gear unless it’s in a dry bag. (And don’t bother with a camera.)
  • Stay near the leader if you want to hear explanations. Our guide pointed out a dolphin in the channel and a crab underwater, both leaving trails of light. Kayaks lagging behind missed that.
  • If you arrive early, stop at the nearby manatee viewing area on the Haulover Canal. It’s rare to see manatees there in the summer, but dolphins like the spot and we saw several swimming and surfacing repeatedly.
  • Because of this tour’s safety orientation, I would be fine with taking  older children on this trip.
  • Mosquitoes weren’t bad on our trip, but we did spray with repellent and recommend that you both use it and bring it. (It is, after all, called the Mosquito Lagoon.)
  • You could do this trip yourself with your own kayak, putting in on the Haulover Canal in Merritt Island NWR.
  • Bioluminescence is only visible on dark nights, so tours are less dramatic in the week around a full moon.
  • We are told the bioluminescent effect gets brighter as the summer advances . The tours continue through October, with August being the peak.
  • There are portable toilets  at the launch site.
  • There is no swimming allowed.

Bioluminescent Kayaking: Florida’s best kept (odd) thrilling magical secret

Bioluminescent Kayaking: Florida’s best kept (odd) thrilling magical secret

One of the magical phenomena of the earth is bioluminescence. It’s found in the deepest parts of the ocean and it’s found in caves. And in Florida you can actually kayak in bioluminescent waters at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville, very near Cocoa Beach. Bioluminescent kayaking is remarkable and you have to see it to believe it’s real.

We were welcomed onto the water by Get Up and Go Kayaking . They have a fleet of clear kayaks that are perfect for paddling the many fresh water springs of Florida and for experiencing the pure magic of bioluminescent kayaking. Clear kayaking through bioluminescence was AMAZING.

The Bioluminescent Kayaking Experience: what to expect

First of all, you should expect surprises and be ready to enjoy every moment. Kayaking at night is very different from daytime paddling. We spend a lot of time on the water, but nothing else matches the calm and mystery of nighttime kayaking. We have done tours and gone on our own to the Mosquito Lagoon at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and are impressed and surprised every time. A part of the Indian River, this is the BEST place to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida .

When you’re on the water at night and the glowing begins, it’s breathtaking and startling all at once. As the sun sets, the ripples and splashed start to glow, and when you’re kayaking through the water you just can’t even comprehend how magical it is until you see it for yourself.

We like to start our kayaking on Indian River before sunset so we get familiar with the area and can see if there are any obstacles around. Also, this gets us on the water before the guided tours. It’s nice to have Mosquito Lagoon and the Overhaul Canal to yourself. It’s gorgeous.

Where to Go for Bioluminesnce in Florida

There are a few places to experience Florida’s glowing water. The most common place to visit and for sure the place with the most guided bioluminescent kayaking tours is Titusville. Located between Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach , Titusville is home to NASA, Cape Canaveral and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. By day, Merritt Island and Indian River are known for an abundance of manatees year-round. By night, June through October the area is known for its incredible density of bioluminescent plankton.

At Titusville there are three main launch sites:

  • Haulover Canal South ( map here )
  • Haulover Canal North (by bridge, map here )
  • Beacon 42 ( map here )

If you’re on the Gulf of Mexico side , you can spend your days exploring the Gulf Coast beaches and then at night visit the warmer lagoons and bays around Fort de Soto and Tampa Bay. There aren’t many tours that go out for bioluminescence in the Tampa area because it isn’t as common as in Titusville, but you can go out yourself and experience it.

Note : in June in the Florida Keys, there is an opportunity for night kayaking with bioluminescence when sea worms reproduce . It’s not as vibrant as the plankton, but is very unique.

Check out our complete guide to Kayaking in the Florida Keys here!

Wildlife and Bioluminescence in Florida

Yes, there is wildlife when you do night kayaking. During the daytime you may see a manatee pop its nose out of the water or an alligator sitting on the bank of the river, and that’s remarkable and fun. At night with glowing waters, it’s a completely different experience. At night, you have to listen for the wildlife because it’s all around you… but then you also SEE IT!!! AND IT GLOWS!!!

The most common wildlife to see during bioluminescence in Florida are the dolphins . They love to splash and hunt in the glowing waters and make quite a scene. I’ve been on my SUP (stand up paddleboard) and had them swim directly under me, glowing and creating blue waves as they surface.

And manatees . Indian River is known for being a very common manatee sighting spot in Florida, and many people visit from Cocoa Beach to see them. In the daytime there is actually a manatee viewing platform on the north side of the Haulover Canal. For night time kayaking, you’ll just need to keep an eye out for HUGE glowing masses underwater. As the manatees get near the surface and agitate the bioluminescent plankton, they glow brighter until they break the surface. It’s amazing.

Other Florida wildlife to watch for during night kayaking in Titusville includes pelicans, mullet (fish that fly out of the water!!!), otters and alligators. Yes, there are gators in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. They tend to stay near the shore, so don’t go that way. The alligators also will swim through the Haulover Canal. We had an experience in July where a twelve foot alligator swam under us and across the river, his tail moving side to side, very visible and glowing. It was incredible and a bit nerve-wracking.

Bioluminescent Jellyfish Season

In the fall and winter months, there is another type of bioluminescence to watch for. Comb Jellyfish show up and light up the Intracoastal Waterway at Indian River. Having bioluminescent defenses themselves, the comb jellies are active from November to March and provide a very different sort of experience. Since they don’t sting, you can actually touch them in the water and make them glow.  Check out Florida Adventurer for more Comb Jelly info!

Note :  always be respectful of wildlife. Would you want to be poked repeatedly by a stranger in a boat?

5 Things to Know Before you go Bioluminescent Kayaking

While you could just find a tour and show up, it’s good to do a little prep to ensure you have the best experience. Follow these tips and you’ll have an incredible time either on a kayaking tour or on your own.

It is VERY Dark on the Water

Because bioluminescence is visible light produced by TINY plankton (dinoflagellates) , it must be very dark to see it. We do most of our bioluminescent kayaking at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. It’s federally protected and is adjacent to the space program NASA launch site. So it’s super dark.

If darkness makes you anxious or claustrophobic, this is not the activity for you. Paddling without great visibility can make some people very anxious and NOBODY wants to have a freak out moment on the water.

The Get Up And Go guides are well prepared with glow sticks and head lamps, as well as flashlights, but even then the darkness might seem intense.

Tip : if you’re going on your own, bring THESE GLOWSTICKS . They’re bright and big enough to stand out if you’re paddling with other people.

Be Prepared for Mosquitoes

Bioluminescent kayaking in Titusville happens on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. It’s called Mosquito Lagoon for a reason. Our kayaking guide with Get Up And Go told us that this is actually where Deet was invented and tested. I believe it.

There are ways to mitigate the mosquitoes when you’re kayaking through bioluminescence in Florida. Follow these easy steps to be as itch-free as possible.

Four Ways to Avoid Mosquitoes for Florida Kayaking

  • Wear long pants and shirts – choose clothing that will keep you cool, but is thick or strong enough to prevent mosquitoes biting through it.
  • Apply bug spray before you arrive and your night kayaking site – either before you get in the car to drive to your bioluminescent kayaking site or pull over in a parking lot before you get there, but apply bug spray before you’re present with them
  • Stay moving – a moving target is harder to hit, and that includes mosquitoes trying to get you. Once you’re paddling it’s easy because you’re moving and there is usually a breeze on the water, but on land, just keep moving until you get into your kayak.
  • Reapply bug spray – bug spray brushes off, loses power and sometimes you just miss spots when applying. Reapply bug spray when you think you should.

We like Repel Plant Based Lemon Eucalyptus . It’s Deet-free and is really effective.  Order here! We’ve also used Natrapel , which is just as good and smells great too. Either is a good choice. Order Natrapel here!

And if you do end up with mosquito bites, we use After Bite Itch Eraser and it’s really effective. The kids are good about using it too and they like that it cools off the itchy spots. Get AfterBite Itch Eraser from Amazon here!

Photographing Bioluminescence is Tough

Getting a good picture of bioluminescence is not easy. While you’re paddling through the glowing water the color and light is incredible and you’ll be in awe… and that’s because your eyes have adjusted to the darkness. Your phone hasn’t adjusted, and if you think it has, give it a try.

DO NOT FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHING THE BIOLUMINESCENCE. You’ll be disappointed with the outcome for the most part and will miss seeing it with your own eyes. Bioluminescent kayaking really is the perfect chance to disconnect from technology completely. Just enjoy the natural phenomena that’s all around you.

Bioluminescent Photography Tips

Like I said, it’s really difficult to successfully photograph the bioluminescent plankton, and don’t even get me started on the impossibility of getting good dolphin pictures in the dark of night without really expensive professional camera gear. Having said that…

It is possible to get some unique, beautiful bio-photos but you have to have the right gear. Since we’re talking about keeping things simple and fun, here’s how you get good glowing water pics with a phone:

  • You need a Google Pixel 3 or higher
  • Use “night sight” feature
  • Have somebody else move their paddle or hand aggressively in the water to agitate the glowing plankton while keeping their kayak as still as possible
  • Keep yourself as still and in one place as you possibly can

We’ve also found that if we are on the water before it’s completely dark out, like just at the end of sunset, we get pretty good photos. Set up the shot with the sunset behind the other kayaker when it’s nearly dark and follow the tips above. Bioluminescent photography is tough.

Stillness paired with aggressive movement is how you get good shots. Best of luck!

Paddling Experience is Helpful, but not Required

Bioluminescent kayaking in Florida is really special, so don’t let a lack of experience paddling keep you from seeing the glowing water with your own eyes. Yes, if you understand controlling a kayak and how to stay calm on the water already, you’ll enjoy your time seeing glowing manatees and dolphins without hesitation. Going on a guided bioluminescence tour is a great way to put newbies at ease.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in night kayaking, especially in a place with so much wildlife. If you can get on the water at least once or twice before setting out into the dark you’ll be much more at ease and enjoy it even more.

Tip: if you struggle to stay calm when trying something new or when you’re in an uncertain place (on the water in the dark), be sure you’re paired up with a more experienced kayaker who can take the reins and let you relax.

The Warmer the Weather the Better the Bioluminescence

So you’ve been hanging out in Daytona Beach or touring NASA at Kennedy Space Center and you’re super hot because it’s Florida. That’s the perfect time to go bioluminescent kayaking! The warmer the weather, the warmer the water, and the warmer the water the more bioluminescent plankton rise to the surface and top layer of the water.

While the air temperature drops when the sun goes down, the water temp stays nice and warm. When there is an exceptionally warm current or a very warm day, the glowing plankton are most dense and easy to activate in the top few inches of the water.

Glowing water really is the most incredible Florida phenomena. That’s why we consider bioluminescent kayaking as one of our Florida Bucket Lists activities.

Florida Bioluminescent Kayaking Tours

There are quite a few options for bioluminescent kayaking tours in Florida. There are several different places you can experience the glowing waters, from Fort De Soto near Saint Petersburg on the Gulf of Mexico , to the Space Coast on the Atlantic. If you’re local you can go yourself if you’re familiar with the area and have your own gear, but doing a tour is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Clear Kayaking for Bioluminescence

Hands down, we recommend Get Up And Go Kayaking for your first Florida bioluminescent kayaking experience. The guides are really knowledgeable and fun, and getting to watch the water light up under and around you as you paddle is incredible.

Bioluminescent Kayaking Clear Kayaks with Get Up And Go Kayaking Merritt Island NWR Titusville Florida 2020 2

The other thing we LOVE about Get Up And Go kayaking is that they do only small tours of no more than 10 participants. When you go out for night kayaking you may see groups of 20 or 30 people. That’s a lot of boats and a lot of chaos. Being in a small group keeps the night kayaking experience calm and peaceful, and it ensures you’ve got a guide who can easily and quickly help you if needed.

Location :  this happens on Mosquito Lagoon at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida.

In addition to doing the bio kayaking, Get Up And Go also does Rock Springs Run (love it!) , Rainbow Springs , Crystal River , Shell Key Preserve and more!

Note : Day Away Kayaking also does a clear kayak tour at Titusville , but we haven’t gone out with them so cannot speak to the experience beyond the natural occurrences in the water.

Guided Bioluminescent Tours at Titusville

There are several operators that paddle at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville. They primarily go out of the launches on the Haulover Canal. Group sizes may vary from very small, private tours to large groups. Most bioluminescent tours last about 90 minutes and cover the same places.

Book a solid body bio-kayaking tour here . And if you prefer Trip Advisor, they have tours too !

Other Florida Kayaking Tours

There are so many great options for getting on the water in Florida, no matter what part of the state you’re in. You do need to inquire locally for bioluminescent tours on the Gulf side of Florida (around Tampa Bay), but there are lots of well vetted guides that do tours to the many Florida springs and through the grass islands of the Everglades . So many options!

And if you’re down in the Florida Keys, there are endless opportunities to book day excursions from Key Largo to Key West. If you have your own gear, be sure to check out the Florida Paddling Trail for more fun places to put in.

Should you fi nd yourself in the Daytona or Saint Augustine areas , we actually are licensed guides as well! That’s right! We’re happy to take you out on small group tours in St Johns and Flagler Counties, focusing on nature and history on the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s an amazing place.   check out the Florida Paddling Trail

Great article! What would you say is the best route to do if we want to do it by ourselves? Thanks!!

If you don't want to go with a guide, you need to be ready with your own gear and be on the water before sunset. You need to be familiar with where you are paddling, including any current or tide, before you're paddling in the dark. If you're going paddling in the dark, whether it's for bio or just to do a full-moon paddle, safety is the most important thing, and with that the most dangerous situations will come from 1.) getting lost or 2.) not being prepared for weather surprises.

Talk about secret! The Bioluminescence in Guana Lake near St Augustine. We've seen it on every tour for the last few years now. June is extra special because of all the fireflies in the forrest at the same time. https://geotrippin.com/home

We need to go out with you!

Friday 18th of November 2022

Hi!! Thank you so much for this article! My husband and I did a bioluminescent bay kayak tour in Puerto Rico (a looong time ago) and now we're planning a trip to FL with our kids (7 &9) and want to do this while we're there. We're planning for spring break though and I'm worried that there won't be much luminescence in early April...do you have any feedback or experience with this? Thanks so much!

That's a great question. I think it'll really depend on how warm our winter and early spring are. Bio gets really bright in late spring, but if April starts off toasty you may be in luck. I wish I had better info, but we always wait to go until June.

You Can Paddle Through Glowing Waters on a Bioluminescence Kayak Tour in Florida

Get an up-close view of the Space Coast's glowing lagoons and rivers.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

Kayaking at night might seem counterintuitive, but on Florida’s Space Coast , it’s a must-do activity for any nature lover. That's because this wetland-rich region is one of the few places where you can witness aquatic bioluminescence.

The phenomenon, which occurs most consistently during the summer, turns the area's rivers and lagoons into a glowing paradise. The event is due to a chemical reaction that causes comb jellies (translucent sea creatures) and dinoflagellates (bioluminescent plankton) to emit blue light any time the water is disturbed. Paddling, or even touching the water with one’s hand, reveals waves of glowing lights, making for a fascinating display. As a result, bio-kayaking tours in the Indian River Lagoon and other nearby waterways have become popular among travelers.

The Indian River Lagoon is a bioluminescent bay on Florida's Atlantic Coast that hosts more glowing plankton than almost anywhere else in the world. During bioluminescence tours, travelers can also spot dolphins and manatees as they weave through mangroves and create trails of blue light.

Manatees and stingrays swim at a leisurely pace, leading to spectacular views of the phenomenon in slow motion, while speeding schools of mullet create quick flashes, appearing like hundreds of green bottle rockets going off underwater.

The best time of year to see the phenomenon is from May through November, and the effects are brightest after 9 p.m.

Visitors should check the lunar calendar before selecting a tour date, as the nights are darkest within five days of a new moon.

Most excursions range from an hour to an hour and a half, with several outfitters hosting guided tours by kayak and stand-up paddleboard.

Some tour operators like Get Up and Go Kayaking offer see-through kayaks so travelers can get an up-close view of the spectacle during the entire ride.

Local outfitter BK Adventure also offers a range of bioluminescence tours, with a choice of clear kayaks, rafts, and stand-up paddleboards. Their three-hour Sunset Kayaking with Bioluminescence excursion allows you to watch dolphins and have a beach picnic, and then paddle through the glowing waters after darkness falls.

When going on a bioluminescence tour, bring natural insect repellent, a change of clothes, and a waterproof bag for your camera or phone. If you're taking photos, turn off your flash for the best results. And don't forget to put down your device and enjoy the moment.

Looking for a magical and unique experience? Discover bioluminescent kayaking in Florida!

The Sunshine State is one of the rare places in the world where you can admire that incredible phenomenon.

If you love water activities and the outdoors, this will be perfect for you. It’s a great way to discover your surroundings in a unique way. It’s also a great thing to do in summer and at night!

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know about bioluminescence in Florida.

This includes explanations, tips, what to wear and of course, the best places for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida!

🔎 Table of Contents

What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is light produced and emitted by living things. It’s due to chemical reactions in their bodies.

Most of the bioluminescent organisms are fish, jellies and plankton. As a general thing, it’s very much of an ocean thing but there are also a few land ones as well.

What causes bioluminescence in Florida?

Bioluminescence is not a phenomenon that you can admire everywhere in the world. It’s pretty unique and places like J ervis Bay , in Australia or Florida , in the USA are particularly famous for it.

Florida is home to several species of bioluminescent sea creatures including dinoflagellates (plankton), comb jellyfish, snapping shrimps and fireflies.

Best time for bioluminescence Florida

Summer is known as the best time of the year to see bioluminescence in Florida. While this is the case, it’s not the only time of the year that you can admire the phenomenon.

Bioluminescence in Florida happens pretty much all year round, just with different species.

Summer months (May to October) are best for plankton bioluminescence.

In the winter months, you can still see it but it will be produced by comb jellies this time.

Bioluminescence is one of the best things to do in Florida during the summer, especially since it’s not the busy season but do not worry, even if you are visiting in winter, you’ll get to experience it as well.

In terms of days, the best time to see the bioluminescence is around the new moon.

This is because it’s much smaller than any other moon.

The light doesn’t reflect on the water so you get to see the beautiful blue light much better.

If you can, avoid the full moon as there is a lot of light that reflects on the water.

That said, if you can’t change the date and happen to be visiting during the full moon, you can still get to see it.

In this case, it would be more even more recommended to book a guided tour as the guides will make sure to bring you to spots that are better during the full moon.

How to see the bioluminescence in Florida?

The best way to experience it is with a kayak, at night.

Obviously, you need as little light as possible to see the bioluminescence so your adventure will have to be at night.

In terms of “transportation”, the best way is to take a kayak so you can be very close to the water.

If you can, opt for a clear kayak so you can even see the light under your legs!

It’s recommended to book a guided kayak tour for this. You will be with a local guide who knows exactly where to go.

Also, he will explain everything about it. It’s very interesting!

In terms of safety, it’s always better to opt for a tour when you are kayaking at night but it’s also the best way to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!

What to wear for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida

Usually, when you go kayaking in Florida , you would just put a bikini on. This is not quite the case for bioluminescent kayaking.

Firstly, you need to remember that it will be at night which means it will be a bit chillier than during the day.

Secondly, the areas where you will go are all known for being home to many mosquitoes.

Knowing all of that, make sure to wear:

  • Long pants and long sleeves. If you can, wear long comfy pants and a T-shirt with long sleeves. This is mainly so you don’t get attacked by mosquitoes. It doesn’t need to be warm. As a matter of fact, you might even want to take something quite light and airy so you’re not too hot. If you are doing it in winter though, you may want to opt for something a bit warmer. If you have a wet suit, this will do perfectly. Bear in mind that while you’re not supposed to get entirely wet, you may get a tiny bit wet so make sure you don’t mind your clothes getting wet.
  • Insect repellent. Again, you can never be too careful with this so put on insect repellent before starting the tour.
  • Water shoes. You will need some sort of shoes for this one. You will be walking in the dark before going on the kayak so it’s better to wear some sort of water sandals to make sure you don’t walk on anything potentially sharp.

Best places for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida

Now, are you ready to discover the best places to see bioluminescence in Florida while kayaking? Let’s get started!

Indian River Lagoon

Located on the Atlantic Coast of Florida, Indian River Lagoon is one of the best places in Florida to see bioluminescence.

The shoals of planktons in the Indian River lagoon glow at night, offering you one of the most surreal kayaking experiences you will ever have.

When paddling here (especially in the warm summer weather), you are likely to see algae, seaweed, marine life but the epitome of this adventure is how these marine animals and fish glow when swimming close to your kayak.

The waterway is isolated, which makes it an excellent location to observe the bioluminescence.

There is a man-made canal, the Haulover canal, from where you can launch your kayak and then paddle east, under the drawbridge and past the Manatee Observation deck.

The locals and guides will offer you more information on where to head for the best bioluminescent experience on the lagoon.

Make sure you carry your camera with you so that you can immortalize the experience. Manatee sighting is a common activity in this location.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach in Florida

Cocoa Beach is well known as a great surfing destination.

The small beach town is a haven for water sports lovers.

When you are not lounging on the clean, sandy beach, you can always hop onto your kayak to enjoy a slow evening watching bioluminescence in the water.

During the warmer months (closest to the new moon), you can see dinoflagellates glowing beautifully around your kayak, and during the cooler months, comb jellies are plenty.

The comb jellies are active from November through March. They do not sting and once you touch them inside the water, they emit a beautiful bluish glow.

Because the phenomenon is so unique, it’s highly recommended to book a guided tour.

The local guides know the area like the back of their hand and will bring you to the best spots while explaining everything you need to know.

Kayaking tours last approximately two hours.

Cape Canaveral

If you want to stay away from the crowds, you can also launch your kayak from Cape Canaveral, a more isolated spot that makes it ideal for this kind of sporting activity.

Cape Canaveral is famous for being America’s launch pad. It’s one of the NASA bases and home to the Kennedy Space Center.

If you love everything that has to do with space and rockets, that’s the perfect place to visit.

However, while most people rush to the Kennedy Space Center, most visitors ignore that Cape Canaveral is also a destination in its own right.

It is known by the locals as one of the best places for bioluminescence kayaking near Orlando and Cocoa Beach.

The best way to discover the glowing plankton here is to opt for a guided tour.

There are local guides to direct you to where you can see the glowing fish and believe us, they are in abundance!

You can also choose whether you prefer a solo or a tandem kayak.

Merritt Island National Wildlife refuge

Located on the Atlantic Coast, Merritt Island is another famous spot for bioluminescence kayaking in Florida.

It lies between Cocoa Beach and Titusville which is particularly convenient.

As you may have gathered by now, this area is where you will find the most bioluminescence in Florida and therefore, you will have a lot of options.

This large barrier island is home to thousands of unique species of birds, fish and mammals. You can even find endangered species here. There are also great hiking opportunities here including the Great Florida Birding Trail.

All in all, it’s a great place to visit if you want to discover what unspoilt Florida truly looks like.

As there are many bioluminescent spots on this island and as the access can sometimes be restricted by NASA, the best way to explore is to join a kayak tour at night.

This tour starts at the Haulover canal but will take a different direction compared to the first one mentioned. You will be heading to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge which is an area of protected wetlands. It’s beautiful!

Fort De Soto Bioluminescence tours

Fort De Soto in Florida

The lagoons and bays around Fort De Soto County Park also offer opportunities (albeit limited) for bioluminescence kayaking.

The park makes up for this limitation with other numerous attractions, including museums, lush foliage, and beautiful beaches.

If you want to have a fulfilling bioluminescence kayaking adventure here, come during the warmer months.

You will find planktons, and at night when they are disturbed by other marine life (dolphins, manatees, or alligators) they glow beautifully.

Dinoflagellates are numerous in Tampa Bay and when the timing is right, they light up the waters, providing a unique, exciting, and ecstatic experience to people kayaking here at night.

There are five islands in Fort De Soto Park and each one has a waterfront and a beautiful beach from where you can launch your kayak to enjoy the bioluminescence adventure.

Titusville is the home to NASA (an attraction by itself), wildlife refuges, and beautiful spots where your family can engage in bioluminescence kayaking.

There are three main launch sites in Titusville; the Haulover Canal South, the Haulover Canal North, and Beacon 42. Each kayaking site offers a distinctively unique experience.

The Haulover Canal North is the most popular launching site, used by numerous tour companies offering daytime and nighttime adventures.

Opting for a bioluminescence kayak tour in Titusville is an excellent idea as you will get to learn so much more about the phenomenon and the area.

Here are the options available:

  • From Haulover canal . You will also have the choice between the Indian River Lagoon or Banana River kayak tour. The tour lasts 1h30. See prices.
  • From Beacon 42. The unique thing about this one is that you will be using clear kayaks, making the experience even better! This tour lasts 1 hour and a half as well. Everything is included. If you are lucky, you may even see some manatees! See prices.

Whether you will be using a company to tour this area or on your own, you are in for an amazing treat.

Manatee and alligator sightings are common, especially during the day.

Dolphins love to splash and play in the glowing waters at night, making beautiful blue-colored waves as they swim beneath your kayak.

Planktons are unusually many during June through October.

Be sure to watch out for otters, mullets, and pelicans as well when kayaking in Titusville.

Mosquito Lagoon

This lagoon is part of the Space Coast that also comprises the Indian River Lagoon and the Banana Lagoon.

During the summer season, billions of dinoflagellates emit bluish light whenever they are disturbed by human activity or by marine life.

You will enjoy watching the waves your paddle makes with every stroke, how your kayak seems to pave a bluish-white way in the dark water, or watching a dolphin swim beneath your kayak, its large body seeming somewhat magnified by the hue.

You can rent a kayak on the lagoon if you decide not to bring yours for the trip. Kayak launching is done at the Haulover Canal in Merritt Wildlife Refuge.

You can also opt to book a kayak tour . It’s pretty affordable and great value for money. Click here to see the prices.

This location is called Mosquito lagoon for good reason, so ensure you carry a mosquito spray with you.

Banana River

This is one of the most popular bioluminescence locations in Cocoa Beach.

It is also very crowded, with numerous guided tours launching from here every night.

You are assured of seeing manatees, stingrays or mullets as they speed beneath your boat.

Planktons are many and they create a wonderful glow whenever you glide above them in your kayak.

If you have a see-through kayak, you will have a magnificent experience.

Pandora, the World of Avatar

Located at Animal Kingdom, in Disney World , the Pandora is a themed section (after the movie avatar) that features bioluminescent plants, marine life, alien forms, mountains that float, and other numerous attractions in true Disney style.

This is a man-made feature and your kids will still enjoy the experience of kayaking on a water mass where the fish illuminate when they are disturbed- as if on cue.

Be sure to check out the other entertainment options inside this place while you are here.

The Econlockhatchee River

There is a stunning 8-mile stretch of the Econlockhatchee River that passes through the Little Big Econ State Forest, providing excellent grounds for kayaking, paddling, and swimming.

During the day, whitewater rafting is a popular activity here. There are several guided tours as well.

This section of the river takes you through a delightful wilderness where all sorts of birds and wildlife reside.

Although the river is winding, it forms a large sandy beach every time it makes a turn, and these are the places where bioluminescence occurs at night.

It might not be as vivid as some of the other locations here (such as the Space Coast: Banana River, Mosquito Lagoon, and Indian River) but you can still see planktons and millions of dinoflagellates glow with every stroke your paddle makes in the water.

Bioluminescence Kayaking in Florida: Everything You Need to Know

posted by James Brockbank on June 2, 2022 // last updated on June 2, 2022

Are you planning a trip to Florida where you will spend your days kayaking?

If so, one of the most fun adventures you can have on a kayaking tour is to choose to go at night when the waters are lit up with bioluminescent plankton or bioluminescent comb jellyfish.

The guide below provides all the information you need to know about bioluminescence kayaking, including the best time to go, the most popular spots for kayaking tours in Florida, and what to pack for your kayaking trip. Now, let’s learn about Florida’s bioluminescence kayaking tours.

What Is Bioluminescence?

The two types of bioluminescence kayaking tours in florida, bioluminescence kayaking works best during a new moon, what to expect in the summer, what to expect in the fall/winter, what organisms lead florida’s indian river lagoon to light up at night, merritt island wildlife refuge, indian river lagoon, cocoa beach, how to pack and prepare for a bioluminescence kayaking tour, the importance of using a kayak tour guide.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

Bioluminescence is known as the light produced via organisms using biochemical reactions. Essentially, certain living things can emit light using chemical reactions. Living things let go of their energy by releasing light.

Whenever the organisms get excited or stressed, they tend to provide bioluminescence. The light works as an alarm system for the organism. Also, they may emit light to talk to others in their species and warn their predators or attract prey.

Generally, plankton, known as Dinoflagellates, can make the waters light up and glow. Combing jellies are also sea creatures that glow in the night. On land, fireflies also produce bioluminescence.

The light in the Florida waters appears blue since that color of light travels the fastest. Other colored lights tend to get absorbed in the ocean waters, and the human eye doesn’t pick up on them. In the sea, organisms as small as bacteria to as large as shark species can emit this type of light when releasing energy.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

You can choose between two main types of bioluminescence kayaking tours in Florida. First, you can choose a tour when bioluminescent plankton or dinoflagellates light up the water. As you are paddling through the waters, you may hit the blue or green colors when your kayak moves through. If you pick up the colorful plankton, the shiny sparkles may get left on your hands.

Get a tour guide to take you on a night of kayaking through bioluminescent plankton. You will need a tour guide with a great experience of the area since you will kayak during darker nights with low shine from the moon.

The second type of bioluminescence kayaking tour you can choose involves glowing comb jellies. These are not the typical jellyfish you might expect when swimming in the ocean. Instead, when kayaking through the waters at night, you will see jelly-like sea animals that light up in the dark.

These are the two most common types of bioluminescence kayaking tours available in Florida.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

When Is the Best Time to See Bioluminescence?

If you’re interested in seeing bioluminescent plankton known as dinoflagellates, then you should book a nighttime kayaking tour during the warmer months of the year. The warm water tends to make these organisms grow in number. During the summer months, dinoflagellates tend to grow in number and bloom.

Once they’ve grown, they act like a lit-up blanket across the water. The plankton starts to grow in May and can continue through October.

However, if you want to see comb jellies and kayak when these organisms light up the waters, the colder months are best for your trip. While these animals are always found in the ocean, the cold waters bring them higher to the surface, where their light glows across the sea.

Furthermore, if you want the clearest view of bioluminescent waters, you should pick kayaking times during a new moon phase.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

One of the best times to go bioluminescence kayaking is four days before and four days after a new moon phase. You can pick the exact day of the new moon, but you don’t have to. Several days before or after will work well at providing a dark night where the ocean waters light up.

As such, you will need to look at a calendar showcasing the phases of the moon. You can also check the schedule of when the moon should rise and shine. If it rises late at night, then your kayak tour won’t get ruined.

The Best Months to Book a Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour

The best times to view bioluminescent plankton and enjoy a nighttime kayaking tour take place from May to early November. During these months, the water warms up and makes the plankton grow and multiply. With more plankton lighting up the waters, the kayaking tours look amazing.

November through March are also good months to enjoy an excellent kayaking tour. However, this time, the comb jellies will provide the glowing waters. When the water cools during the winter, the comb jellies rise to the surface and bring more shine and light.

Essentially, you will find many months perfect for a nighttime kayaking tour throughout the year. The summer, fall, and winter months make for a beautiful time kayaking through bioluminescent water in the state of Florida.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

June through October tends to make the best time to go kayaking at night to see dinoflagellates lighting up the ocean in Florida. In particular, July and August are the best months for the strongest glow.

You should talk to a kayaking tour guide to figure out the best time to book a summer kayaking trip. You will want to choose the best conditions on any particular night, including when the moon has little shine or during a new moon phase.

Also, as you move further north or south in Florida, the seasons may not be the only way to track the best time for bioluminescence kayaking. The conditions may vary depending on the part of Florida you’re visiting. A kayaking tour guide will offer the right information.

The late fall and winter provide the second time for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida. The best months start in November and end by March. During these months, the comb jellies come out and provide the glow you’re searching for when kayaking through the ocean at night.

Comb jellies provide plenty of brilliant colors, and you’ll see a dazzle of rainbows moving across the ocean. The blue-green light will amaze you as you paddle across the sea. Remember that these organisms are not the same as jellyfish and won’t sting you.

When you do go nighttime kayaking in the winter, pick the nights with the best conditions.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

The most common organisms that can light up Florida’s Indian River Lagoon and make the waters glow include:

  • Comb jellies
  • Dinoflagellates
  • Fireflies or lightning bugs
  • Snapping shrimp

You can find some of these organisms in other parts of Florida, such as Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, Cape Canaveral, and near Orlando. Comb jellies light up the waters in the winter while dinoflagellates grow in number and glow at night throughout the summer months. The colors look incredible as you kayak through the waters.

What Are Some of the Best and Most Popular Bioluminescence Kayaking Tours in Florida?

You will find numerous fantastic bioluminescence kayaking tours throughout Florida. For instance, you can go on the Sunset Kayaking with Bioluminescence tour at the Indian River by Bird Island.  On this incredible tour, you will see manatees, birds, dolphins, and more. At sunset, some amazing birds you will see include cranes, eagles, and falcons.

The tour lasts three hours, and you will take a break after 1.5 hours on the shore. You’ll love watching the dolphins jumping through the waters.

Another incredible kayaking tour involves using clear kayaks on bioluminescent nights at Cocoa Beach. The launch site is a few minutes away from Kiwanis Island Park. The Cocoa Beach tour provides a fascinating bioluminescent night in clear, glass-like kayaks. The entire kayak tour is magical.

For a clear kayak tour , May through November tends to be the best time to go. You may even see dolphins or manatees swimming underneath your boat.

Below, we discuss some more popular kayaking tours at Merritt Island, the Indian River Lagoon, and Cocoa Beach.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

Merritt Island is a gorgeous place in Florida and holds a 140,000-acre national wildlife refuge. The federal government designated the island a national reserve to keep its wetlands, marshes, and lagoons safe from destruction.

If you’re looking for a bioluminescent kayaking tour at Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge , the best area to do so is at Haulover Canal. The area is completely dark without any light pollution. As such, you will love kayaking through the lit-up waters.

When you start kayaking through Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, you may get to see all sorts of sea animals, including alligators and manatees.

The Indian River Lagoon involves three different rivers where you can go nighttime kayaking. The rivers you can paddle down include the Banana River, the Mosquito Lagoon, and the Indian River. The Indian River Lagoon is rather remote, and you won’t see much light pollution.

The lit-up waters will look amazing as you move your kayak through the waves. Furthermore, you’ll love seeing more than 4,300 species of animals and plants here. The plankton provides the bioluminescence you desire on your nightly tour.

Bring plenty of bug spray as you will launch your kayaks from the Mosquito Lagoon.

Cocoa Beach is an excellent spot for vacationers and families looking to relax. The spot is also popular among surfers. Yet, Cocoa Beach is more than that. It’s a great place to spend a night kayaking through bioluminescent waters.

Do you want the perfect spot for nighttime kayaking? Pick Cape Canaveral and the Banana River Aquatic Preserve near Cocoa Beach. The area here is also remote and doesn’t have crowds or noise. You will be left alone with the lit-up waters and sea creatures of Cocoa Beach.

You can find popular launch sites near Banana River. There are plenty of guided tours you can choose from.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

Before you go and book a bioluminescence kayaking tour, you should prepare and pack all the items you’ll need. First, to avoid getting stung by mosquitoes or other bugs, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts on your kayaking trip. Bring bug spray and use it!

Also, pack water shoes since you may get wet during the tour. Wear clothes that dry quickly. Essentially, you need to protect yourself and your body from the environment. Wear water shoes instead of barefoot, as you don’t want any mud and sand stuck on your feet when putting the kayak into the river.

Furthermore, you will need to put on a life vest and carry glow sticks so that your guide won’t lose sight of you. Another great idea is to pack a pair of clean and dry clothes and a towel to leave in your car. You never know how wet you might get when kayaking.

Tour guides provide useful information about the biology and sea life around you. You should also use a kayak tour guide because of their knowledge about the best conditions for kayaking and the best times you should go on a night tour.

You will find the best places to see with the help of a tour guide, and you will learn much more about the sea animals of Florida.

Now, you should know when and where to go kayaking on a nighttime bioluminescence tour. After reading the guide above, you know what to pack and how to prepare for this adventure. Before you know it, you will paddle through the glowing waters and enjoy the many sea animals swimming through the rivers.

Bioluminescence Kayaking in Florida (Glowing Water on the Space Coast)

Bioluminescent kayaking in Florida is a unique and magical experience that attracts adventure seekers and nature lovers from all over the world.

Bioluminescence is the ability of living organisms to produce light, and in Florida, it’s the tiny plankton that light up the waterways.

When kayaking through the clear, shallow waters of Florida’s lagoons and bays at night, you can witness this natural phenomenon as the water lights up with a soft, blue and green glow. It’s a breathtaking sight that can only be experienced in a few places in the world.

Table of Contents

What Is Bioluminescence Kayaking?

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that occurs when light is emitted by bioluminescent organisms. These bioluminescent creatures produce the light as a result of a chemical reaction that occurs naturally within them.

These chemical reactions inside and outside their bodies or cells make them glow in the dark.

This phenomenon happens in marine environments (but it is not exclusive to marine creatures) and bioluminescent kayaking is one of the best ways to experience it.

This is because the movement of your paddle and kayak through the water causes disturbance, illuminating the organisms and creating a magical light show beneath your kayak.

Because of the bioluminescence created by the plankton and other organisms, anything that is moving in the water will also become illuminated. For example, when a manatee or dolphin swims past, they will be illuminated because of the bioluminescent plankton on their bodies.

There is no shortage of bioluminescent kayaking trips around Central Florida, especially on the Space Coast, with most of them operating daily. A guided tour can often be better than trying to locate the bioluminescence yourself.

Guided tours can also be beneficial when it comes to accessing waterways around the Kennedy Space Center.

When Is The Best Time To Go Bioluminescent Kayaking In Florida?

Video: biolumininescence on florida’s space coast.

Bioluminescence occurs at night and dark nights tend to be the best. In the warm waters of Central Florida, you can witness bioluminescence all year round.

But this colorful phenomenon of lights is best viewed in Florida between May and November when the water temperature is warmer. Summer can be the optimal time for bioluminescent kayaking , particularly on Florida’s Space Coast, where kayaking tours can fill up fast.

If you want to see comb jellies as part of your bioluminescent kayaking tour, it can be best to head out from around the middle of October through May . The comb jelly is a naturally bioluminescent creature that is similar in appearance to a jellyfish but it doesn’t sting.

While you can see bioluminescence in the Sunshine State all year, it can be best viewed when there is no light pollution.

Though you might still be able to see the glowing plankton, it can be better to go on a bioluminescent kayaking tour when there is a new moon rather than a full moon. This is because the light from a full moon can be too bright to fully show the bioluminescent creatures glowing.

Best Places To Go Bioluminescence Kayaking In Florida

The best places to go bioluminescence kayaking in Florida tend to be on Florida’s Space Coast, making it an easy trip if you’re staying near the theme parks in Orlando .

However, there are some limited opportunities to go bioluminescent kayaking on the Gulf Coast during July and August, generally around Fort de Soto in Tampa Bay .

1: Indian River Lagoon

The Indian River Lagoon is probably one of the best and most popular places in Florida to go bioluminescent kayaking. This lagoon is designated Outstanding Florida Water as well as an Estuary of National Significance. It is the most biologically diverse lagoon in North America .

The natural lagoon is located between the mainland and the barrier islands on Florida’s east coast. It is made up of the Indian River, the Banana River Lagoon, and Mosquito Lagoon.

The Indian River is not really a river, in that it does not flow in a constant direction. Sometimes it flows north, sometimes it flows south. And sometimes it doesn’t flow at all.

The large lagoon is home to thousands of plant and animal species, including sea turtles, manatees, various birds, and it’s the only place in the world where you’ll find the Atlantic salt marsh snake.

A good place to launch is at the Haulover Canal , just north of Merritt Island. The kayak launch can give you good access to the Indian River Lagoon. But you can also paddle along the canal to Mosquito Lagoon so this can be an ideal spot to launch to experience bioluminescence in more than one of our top locations.

Lots of organized group kayak excursions tend to launch from Haulover Canal so it can sometimes be busy during the peak summer months.

2: Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

The Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge sits within the Indian River Lagoon, just west of Titusville. This island is also where you will find NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

The wildlife refuge covers 140,000 acres of protected habitats, including salt marshes and hardwood hammocks. These habitats provide homes to numerous varieties of plants and animals, including 15 federally endangered species.

Because of the Kennedy Space Center and government agencies operating in Merritt Island, there are some restrictions on where you can paddle . Some waterways have limited access at certain times, due to rocket launches or other activities.

Merritt Island Kayaking Tours And Rentals

A day away kayak tours.

A Day Away Kayak Tours can be found across the Space Coast, with launches close to Cocoa Beach. There are several tours available, including bioluminescence tours both in the winter to see the glowing jellies and in summer to see the plankton.

You can also book a sunset bioluminescence tour that lets you paddle near Mullethead Island, a protected island that is home to hundreds of different bird species. So it can be a great place to spot roseate spoonbills, ibis, egrets, and, of course, pelicans.

You can witness the birds above your head while dolphins splash nearby, all before the waters come alive with lights after the sun goes down.

Get Up and Go Kayaking

Get Up and Go Kayaking is located in Titusville but also has other locations throughout Florida for other kayak tours and rentals. The bioluminescent kayak tours take you through the wildlife refuge in a clear kayak for a true underwater view.

The bioluminescent tours only operate from May through October through this outfitter. But you can also book a VIP experience where your personal experience will be filmed so you can treasure the magic and memories of the bioluminescence for years to come.

Parrish Park Boat Ramp, Max Brewer Memorial Parkway, Titusville, FL 32796. Just across the Max Brewer Bridge.

3: Banana River Lagoon (Near Orlando)

The Banana River Lagoon is part of the Indian River Lagoon and the intracoastal waterway. It can be easily accessed from Orlando with a direct road between the Disney area and Cocoa Beach.

The Banana River sits to the west of Cape Canaveral. The lagoon offers excellent opportunities for bioluminescent kayaking, with several bioluminescent kayaking tours operating in the area.

From here you can explore the mangrove wetlands and experience Florida wildlife up close, including manatees, stingrays, dolphins, and even alligators .

There is also the opportunity to take night tours on a larger pontoon boat, which might be good if you have very small children or elderly relatives who might not manage a kayak tour.

Banana River Lagoon Kayaking Tours And Rentals

BK Adventure and Florida Adventurer both offer bioluminescence kayaking on the Banana River Lagoon.

Martin Anderson Beachline Expressway, Cape Canaveral, FL 32920. Access is next to the Banana River Bridge off the 528.

4: Kiwanis Island Park

Kiwanis Island can be one of the closest and most convenient places for bioluminescent kayaking if you want to stay close to Cocoa Beach on the Space Coast.

You can launch your own kayak here and you will also find bioluminescent kayaking tours in the area that launch from this location.

This island is within a wildlife preserve on Sykes Creek, allowing for exploration of the shallow waters of the Indian River mangroves and salt marshes.

Launching from Kiwanis Island, you can head north to reach the Barge Canal where you can access both the Banana River and the Indian River .

Kiwanis Island Park Kayaking Tours And Rentals

Florida adventurer.

Florida Adventurer offers several options for bioluminescent tours, including both kayak tours and raft tours. These guided tours launch from Titusville and Cocoa Beach, with tours available daily.

The tour guides provide you with glow sticks to wear , along with a life jacket. Water shoes are recommended and flip flops are not advised.

You can book bioluminescence tours in a clear kayak if you want to make the most of the spectacle and witness it happening directly below your boat. You may also get an interesting view of any larger creatures that happen to swim underneath you.

Kiwanis Island Boat Launch, Kiwanis Island Park Road, Merritt Island, FL 32952. The island is just off the Merritt Island Causeway on Sykes Creek.

5: Mosquito Lagoon

Mosquito Lagoon is probably the most remote and least inhabited location on our list. Embarking on a kayak tour around this lagoon will let you experience the real Florida, with almost zero light pollution so that you can fully appreciate all the wonder of the glowing plankton and glowing water.

This Central Florida lagoon is a great place to kayak through the mangrove wetlands on a bioluminescent kayaking tour.

With this area being pretty much in the wilderness, you will generally encounter lots of bugs. The lagoon’s name doesn’t come from nowhere. So it can be important to bring plenty of bug spray before you head out, particularly if you plan to do a sunset bioluminescence tour.

Mosquito Lagoon Kayaking Tours And Rentals

BK Adventure, Florida Adventurer, and A Day Away Kayak Tours all offer bioluminescence tours around Mosquito Lagoon. There are no tours based on the shores of this lagoon due to its remote location.

Beacon 42 Boat Ramp, Courtenay Parkway N, FL. North of the Manatee Observation Deck. You need to have a Refuge Pass from Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge to launch from this ramp. You can buy it online here .

In Conclusion

Central Florida, particularly the Space Coast, is one of the best places in the world to go bioluminescent kayaking.

Witnessing this natural light spectacle can be a bucket list experience and in Florida’s warm weather, it can be even more magical. Imagine yourself watching the glowing jellies on a warm Florida February night.

Just remember to wear some water shoes and apply your bug spray before you set off on your unique wildlife tour.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT NIGHT FOR A BIOLUMINESCENT TOUR:

When planning a bioluminescence kayak tour in Florida, take a look at the moon phase calendar. The visibility of bioluminescence can be impacted by the brightness of the moon, as a brighter moon may make it more challenging for viewing due to the moonlight’s reflection on the water surface. For optimal viewing and maximum brilliance of bioluminescence, it’s best to select a time when the sky is completely dark.

The best and most popular bioluminescence kayaking tour in Florida is the Bioluminescence Kayak Tour with a staggering 650+ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ reviews.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

Bioluminescence Kayak Tour will take you on an adventure through the waters around Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, to see the fascinating bioluminescence in the water.

As you paddle, the blue water will start to glow brighter , creating an enchanting atmosphere.

The water glows due to the dinoflagellates, also known as planktons, which are tiny microorganisms that react with an illuminating glow when moved. By moving your kayak, the glow will become bright and light up the water around you.

It’s like something out of a dream , as I said earlier, it’s up there with seeing the Northern Lights, and seeing it in real life is a true pinch-yourself moment.

Seeing the water glow as I moved my paddle is one of my favourite memories from my months in Florida.

In addition to the glowing water, a highlight of this tour is the possibility of seeing manatees or dolphins swimming about, as they are common in this area.

Taking this small-group tour is the best way to experience this intriguing phenomenon, as your tour guide is an expert at knowing which spots will have the best and brightest bioluminescence.

The guides are also great at spotting any dolphins or manatees in the water.

Florida is one of the few places around the world where you can experience bioluminescence while kayaking, making it an incredibly unique tour.

I’m so glad I added it to my Floridian itinerary, and I recommend it to everyone I speak to.

Bioluminescence Kayak Tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it’s more than worth doing on your next Florida trip.

2. Bioluminescence Night Kayaking Tour of Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (500+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 📍 WHERE: Merrit Island Refuge | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

A close second for these bioluminescence kayaking Florida tours is the Bioluminescence Night Kayaking Tour of Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge which also has more than 500 positive reviews!

Review which says "Getting to see the bioluminescence and the peacefulness of kayaking at night under the stars. Our guide Seven did a really nice job of sharing information about the location and the wildlife within it."

Experience the rare phenomenon of bioluminescence by taking the Bioluminescence Night Kayaking Tour of Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge and I promise you, you won’t regret it.

This hour-and-a-half guided tour will lead you to paddle through Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge which is a protected wetlands area.

This tour is a great option because it goes through the protected nature area, so there is very little light pollution.

The dark sky makes for the perfect atmosphere to see the bioluminescence glow brightly as you paddle along. Watching the water sparkle and glow a bright blue colour is truly mesmerizing and an incredible experience.

Bioluminescence Night Kayaking Tour of Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is great for all levels of experience, whether you are an expert kayaker or if it is your first time in a kayak as it’s not very strenuous, and is more about getting out on the water to see the bioluminescence rather than actually kayaking.

The tour includes a kayak, equipment, and an expert guide so that all you have to do is paddle through the water and take in the amazing illuminating lights.

Kayaking while the bioluminescence lights up the water is an indescribable experience, and pictures can’t do it justice. It’s really hard to take good photos at night time unfortunately, it’s the only downside to the whole experience.

If you’re looking to kayak through bioluminescent water, then look no further than the Bioluminescence Night Kayaking Tour of Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge .

3. Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (150+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 📍 WHERE: Merritt Island | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

If you want to see Florida’s bioluminescence and love wildlife and sunsets, then Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour is the tour you’ve been looking for.

bioluminescence canoe trip florida

The Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour is an incredible way to experience three of Florida’s natural wonders from Merritt Island.

This 2-hour kayaking tour leaves before sunset, so that at the beginning of the tour you can paddle with the manatees.

Kayaking with manatees is one of many highlights of any trip to Florida. These massive mammals swim right up to your kayak , allowing you to get a really close-up look at them.

Similar to dolphins, manatees are super friendly and curious mammals that will come up close to people. And speaking of dolphins, you can see them too. When they swim in the water, they literally glow blue. It’s amazing!

Kayaking with the manatees is a spectacular experience and one of my all-time favourite things to do in Florida.

However, the experience doesn’t stop there, you will continue to paddle along past Bird Island during one of Florida’s beautiful sunsets. Few places in the world come close to Florida in terms of sunsets in my opinion!

Birds tend to be more active at sunset, so you are likely to see a variety of birds chirping and flying around at this time.

Once the sun goes down, you get to experience one of the coolest phenomena in the world , the illuminating bioluminescence and since you’re on a kayak, you light up the water as you paddle through it.

Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour is a great option for anyone looking to experience bioluminescence kayaking but also see manatees up close in their natural habitat.

The tour is a fantastic way to experience a few of the top things Florida has to offer all in one go.

If you love nature and animals, Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour is the best tour for you.

4. Florida Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour | Haulover canal (Titusville)

A picture of some waves glowing blue

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (250+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 📍 WHERE: Indian River Lagoon | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

Florida Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour is another really solid option for taking a Florida bioluminescence kayaking tour. Again, it has an abundance of positive reviews, more than 250 in fact.

Review which says "The bioluminescence was incredible BUT when it began to lightly rain, it was absolutely magickal!!!!!!! The water was literally sparkling like blue diamonds!!!!! We will most definitely do this again!!!!! HIGHLY recommend this tour and our guide, Clint, was great!!!!! Super knowledgeable, kept us safe, together and having a great time!!!!"

Bioluminescence kayaking is a spectacular experience, and Florida Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour will take you on an hour-and-a-half guided kayak journey to see the water all lit up, creating a magical ambience for you to take in.

Bioluminescence is a rare phenomenon that occurs in Florida and is a must-do activity when visiting the sunshine state. And there’s no better way to do it than by taking a tour.

One great aspect of this particular kayaking experience is that it is possible to do the bioluminescent experience year-round . Usually, when you visit other places, such as the bioluminescence at Cocoa Beach , it’s limited to parts of the year.

But not here. The illuminating lights in the warm summer weather are caused by dinoflagellates, which make the water glow as you paddle through it.

However, in the wintertime, the dinoflagellates aren’t present, but instead, you will be able to see the Bioluminescent Comb-Jellyfish.

These Jellyfish glow a bright blue and green colour as they swim through the water, creating yet another unique bioluminescent experience. And no, they don’t sting .

This tour is the best option for anyone travelling to Florida in the winter , as you will have the opportunity to see the Bioluminescent Comb-Jellyfish at that time of year.

It is important to note that Florida Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour books up quickly, so make sure to reserve your spot in advance!

5. Bioluminescent Kayak Tour: Fin Expeditions

A picture of a net glowing blue as it scoops the bioluminenescent algae during a bioluminescence kayaking florida tour

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (150+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 📍 WHERE: Cocoa Beach | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

Bioluminescent Kayak Tour: Fin Expeditions is well renowned as one of the best bioluminescence kayaking tours Florida has to offer. I loved it, and the rest of the reviews speak for themself.

Review which says "This was the best bioluminescence tour I have ever done. We saw alot of jellyfish and the Algie and Dino flatulence were great. The glow that night was the best it had been in 3 weeks. The best part about the tour though was our guide Gabbie. She was amazing and gave us alot of info during the tour. I highly recommend going and ask for Gabbie to be your guide."

Bioluminescent Kayak Tour: Fin Expeditions is perfect for anyone visiting the popular Cocoa Beach area. The tour meets at the Cocoa Beach Country Club and then you start your kayaking adventure to the Banana River Lagoon.

The Banana River Lagoon is also home to the West Indian Manatees, which are large and friendly sea mammals.

When paddling through the Banana River, watch in awe as the water lights up with a sparkling glow. It is such a unique experience that makes you feel like you are on another planet. Seeing the bioluminescence seems so surreal it feels like a dream.

One special thing about Bioluminescent Kayak Tour: Fin Expeditions is that it includes a net to allow you to catch and release the Bioluminescent Comb-Jellyfish, allowing you to interact more closely with the small Jellyfish.

It’s pretty epic playing with the water in your hands and seeing it glow. The kid inside me was going nuts about how cool it was! And as I said earlier, this kind of Jellyfish doesn’t sting and instead creates a dazzling glowing effect.

Another highlight of this tour is that it is limited to a small group . Small group tours are always much better than big group tours if you ask me.

They allow you to maximize your time, clearly hear the guide, and in this situation, also increase your chances of seeing marine wildlife as larger groups may create more noise that scares off wildlife.

So all in all, Bioluminescent Kayak Tour: Fin Expeditions is an amazing tour and I highly recommend it.

6. Thousand Islands Bioluminescent Kayak Tour with Cocoa Kayaking!

A picture of a kayak leaving a trail of glowng blue in the water.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (100+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 📍 WHERE: Cocoa Beach | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

Thousand Islands Bioluminescent Kayak Tour is another of my personal favourites. The below review summarises it perfectly. The guides go above and beyond- genuinely some of the best tour guides I’ve ever had for any tour anywhere in the world.

Review which says "Just an amazing trip. Tour guide gave us everything. Insect repellent, water, nets. Someone told me this was an experience not to forget and they were right. Thanks!"

Thousand Islands Bioluminescent Kayak Tour is a fantastic option for anyone that is staying in the popular Cocoa Beach area of Florida. A Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour is sure to add something incredibly unique to your beach vacation, providing unforgettable memories.

It is a great option for solo travellers, couples, or the whole family! That’s why I always recommend a bioluminescence kayaking tour in Florida- there’s no one who won’t love it!

The kayaking tour will guide you around the Thousand Islands area , which is a 338-acre preserve that is next to Cocoa Beach. As you paddle through the water, once again, you will experience the magical bioluminescence which will light up the water creating quite the spectacle.

Thousand Islands Bioluminescent Kayak Tour is a great option for families because it is one of the tours that is open to all ages, so kids are welcome to join.

For anyone doing the tour with kids, a tandem kayak is used to ensure safety. This is the fancy name for a kayak with space for two people rather than individual kayaks.

Kids are sure to love watching the magical waters light up around them while riding in the kayak. It is an awesome experience that both kids and adults are sure to enjoy.

I guarantee it! For the thrill of seeing bioluminescence for yourself, book the Thousand Islands Bioluminescent Kayak Tour .

7. Bioluminescence Clear Kayak or Clear Paddleboard Adventure Tour

A picture looking through the bottom of a clear kayak as the water beneath glows

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (40+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 📍 WHERE: Indian River Lagoon | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

If you love the idea of bioluminescence, you’re going to love the idea of kayaking on a clear transparent paddle board! That’s exactly what Bioluminescence Clear Kayak or Clear Paddleboard Adventure Tour offers.

Review which says "I cannot say enough good things about the team and our adventure. My 6yo daughter and myself rented a tandem clear kayak for the 8-10pm tour and we had a blast. I am not the most experienced kayaker and I didn't have any issue getting out to the island. My daughter swam around and splashed in the glowing waters and had the most magical time seeing the glowy algea. I would recommend this tour to anyone and everyone!"

Bioluminescence Clear Kayak or Clear Paddleboard Adventure Tour offers the opportunity to paddle in a clear kayak or a paddleboard for an incredible adventure through the bioluminescent water.

Having the choice between kayaking and paddleboarding is also great, as you can choose either or depending on how you feel.

At sunset, you will start your kayaking or paddleboarding trip by paddling out to Horseshoe Crab Island. This is a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Titusville.

Once on the island, your guide will lead you on a short hike where you can choose to participate in one of Florida’s popular pastimes, crabbing . Crabbing involves searching for Blue Crabs and is a popular Florida activity along the coast.

Even if you aren’t interested in crabs, keep an eye on the water because you may see other marine life like dolphins swimming around at sunset.

After sunset, you will get back on your kayak or paddleboard to experience the highlight of the trip , which is paddling through the water as it illuminates the darkness of night.

Make sure to really take in the situation and watch in awe as your paddle lights up the dark water with hues of glowing blue and green colors. It’s one of those moments where you’ll really appreciate life.

Bioluminescence Clear Kayak or Clear Paddleboard Adventure Tour is the perfect tour for anyone who wants to paddleboard rather than kayak, as that is an option with this specific tour. But also for getting an amazing look at the bioluminescent water, as the clear bottom allows you to see everything.

8. Clear Kayak Bioluminescence Tour

A picture of some glowing blue spots in the water created by fish disturbing the bioluminenescent algae.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (100+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 📍 WHERE: Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

Clear Kayak Bioluminescence Tour is another really good Florida bioluminescence kayaking tour which offers transparent kayaks.

Review which says "Not only do you get to see and experience the amazing bioluminescent creatures in the water, you also get an awesome view of the sky. There is so little light pollution, that you are able to see shooting stars and even a satellite pass overhead. The guides are great and very knowledgeable."

One of the best ways to enjoy a bioluminescence kayaking tour in Florida is by going in a clear kayak. And this is exactly what Clear Kayak Bioluminescence Tour offers.

A clear kayak is different from the typical kayaking experience, as it allows you to see through the kayak and into the water, which results in amazing views.

As part of the tour, you will venture around the Indian River in your clear kayak as you watch the bioluminescence light up the water around you.

The clear kayak will allow you to see fish swim underneath your kayak as the water glows a mystical blue and green colour.

Make sure to watch for marine life such as fish because as they swim beneath you they will create the same glowing light in the water , which is incredible when viewed from a clear kayak.

There are lots of amazing animal experiences in Florida such as taking a Tampa dolphin tour or visiting Busch Gardens, but this is one of my favourites because it’s so unique. Not to mention the possibility of seeing manatees and dolphins.

Clear Kayak Bioluminescence Tour truly is a bucket trip experience and is well worth doing on your next trip to Florida. I 100% recommend going with a clear kayak as it is fascinating to be able to see the glowing water underneath you.

9. Sunset Bioluminescence Tour

A picure of a kayak paddle creating a blue glow because of the bioluminescent algae.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (80+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 📍 WHERE: Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

The penultimate tour on this list is the Sunset Bioluminescence Tour but the standard of these tours is amazing, and it makes for a wonderful tour, even though it’s so far down the list. Remember, these are the 10 best out of 100s of tour options!

Review which says "Such a beautiful and breathtaking experience! Pictures cannot do this justice. The bioluminescence at night was truly dazzling and magical... a manatee surfaced right next to my kayak and was glowing in the dark! Seriously mind-blowing! 10/10 experience and I would absolutely return and do this 1,000 times over."

Sunset Bioluminescence Tour is a great option for anyone wanting to kayak in the bioluminescent light, but also have the opportunity to see wildlif e and watch the beautiful sunset from the water.

This 2-hour kayaking tour leaves right around sunset so that you can relax as you paddle through the calm waters and enjoy a sunset that fills the blue sky with hues of pink and orange.

Florida is famous for its stunningly beautiful sunsets , and one of the best ways to watch these amazing sunsets is out on the water in a kayak.

Sunset is also a fantastic time to see wildlife, as much of the marine life tends to be more active at this time. Watch as the dolphins swim and play in the water while the gigantic manatees swim past your kayak as they head to their home in the nature reserve.

When the sun sets, you’ll experience the best part of the tour, the illuminating water that glows fluorescent blue and green colours.

As you paddle along your guide will show you the areas with the best and brightest bioluminescence, ensuring that you have an amazing experience.

And if you’re lucky enough to see any more wildlife at this time, well, the experience speaks for itself. It’s indescribable.

Sunset Bioluminescence Tour provides lifelong memories that you will cherish forever. It guarantees an evening not to forget.

10. Thousand Islands Mangrove Tunnel & Bio Comb Jelly Sunset Tour

A picure of a kayak paddle creating a blue glow because of the bioluminescent algae during a bioluminenescence kayaking florida tour.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (70+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2 hours | 📍 WHERE: Thousand Islands | 🚣🏽‍♂️ BOOK NOW

Last but by no means least on this list of bioluminescence kayaking tours in Florida is the Thousand Islands Mangrove Tunnel & Bio Comb Jelly Sunset Tour . And it really is a case of “last but not least”, as it has a 5/5 star rating.

Review which says "I did the tour with my daughter (9). We saw dolphins. The ride through the mangrove tunnels was very cool. But of course the greatest thing was seeing the bioluminescence - that was incredibly fascinating."

Thousand Islands Mangrove Tunnel & Bio Comb Jelly Sunset Tour is a small-group tour (win!) that will lead you to sunset around the beautiful mangroves.

Mangroves are picturesque trees that grow from the water and serve as a natural protectant of the area. It’s one of the things Florida is famous for, as the Everglades (where you can take alligator tours ), is the largest continuous mangrove forest in the western hemisphere.

Don’t worry though, you’re unlikely to encounter any alligator problems, and the mangroves create peaceful and calm waters , which makes for an easy and relaxing kayaking trip.

And of course, you can admire the beautiful Florida sunset while on your kayak. And as always, be on the lookout for wildlife such as fish, birds, manatees, and even dolphins.

Once the sun has set, paddle to some of the best areas to experience the bioluminescence in the water. Experience the rare, glowing bioluminescence phenomenon as you paddle around, which is an incredible sight to be seen.

Make sure to watch closely as you may see dolphins and fish swimming through the water which will create the same magical bioluminescence effect as they move through the water.

The bioluminescence kayaking tour is a spectacular experience . It is a must-do tour for anyone looking to do something different and exciting on your trip to Florida.

And booking a Thousand Islands Mangrove Tunnel & Bio Comb Jelly Sunset Tour is the perfect way to experience it for yourself.

Imagine a Space Coast kayaking adventure through a fairyland of glowing blue-green water where fish, dolphins and manatees appear strangely illuminated beneath a starry sky.

Florida's northern Space Coast offers ideal conditions for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida, a peculiar natural phenomenon in which tiny, marine organisms called dinoflagelletes glow, generating cold white light through an internal chemical reaction like a firefly. The organisms are too small to see, but with some 200,000 to 300,000 in a single liter of water they can cause the water to glow the color of a fluorescent blue-green glow stick. Any movement excites the organisms and causes them to alight, from a swimming fish to swaying sea grass to the movement of your hand through the water.

"It's like a magical light show in the water. Most people walk away saying, 'I don't even know how to describe this,'" says Mike Mahan, owner of A Day Away Kayak Tours in Titusville . "When you startle a school of fish it looks like bright blue bottle rockets going off under the water."

The Space Coast is already known as a launching place into other worlds. It also features some of the best of our own. Besides the space program, nature here is the primary draw. Located on Florida's east coast near the state's midsection, the region offers some 72 miles of beaches, the state's longest stretch. It is a top surfing spot in the eastern United States. The region is also home to Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge . Canaveral National Seashore is among 10 national seashores in the United States, a rare untouched stretch of beach. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge consists of some 140,000 acres of saltwater estuaries and hardwood hammocks, home to 15 federally threatened or endangered species and a spectacular array of birds.

The opportunity to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida is not unique to the northern Space Coast, but the area's lack of development means less water and light pollution, making it easier to see the strange glow of those tiny organisms. Imagine setting out along the Space Coast, kayaking in the evening to watch the sun set. Soon the sky grows dark and the only light comes from the glow below as mullet burst into the air like green popcorn.

To remain inside Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge after dark visitors require permits, so it's best to go with a guide like Mahan, recommends Laurilee Thompson, a fifth-generation Floridian and avid outdoorswoman, who is co-owner of Dixie Crossroads , the well-known Titusville seafood restaurant.

"Dolphins will swim right next to the kayaks sometimes. So it's like this big huge green fluorescence in the water from the dolphins. Sometimes we'll see manatees, and sometimes the manatees will be way down deep, like this big glowing ghost under the water," Thompson says. "It's a lifetime experience, no doubt about it."
