Caribou Announce 2021 North American Tour Dates

Dan Snaith is finally ready to hit the road in support of Suddenly

Caribou Announce 2021 North American Tour Dates

Dan Snaith, the mastermind behind Canadian electronic project Caribou , has announced his return to live music with a series of North American tour dates to start in the fall.

The newly scheduled itinerary begins November 15th in Los Angeles, featuring 26 dates across Canada and the United States before culminating on February 21st in Portland. The tour includes a three-night residency in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall in addition to some two-night stints in Brooklyn and Vancouver.

The dates are in promotion of Caribou’s Suddenly , which we called one of the best albums of 2020 . Back in March, he released Suddenly Remixes , featuring reworks by the likes of Four Set, Floating Points, Toro y Moi, Jessy Lanza, and more.

Pre-sales begin May 13th, with a general on-sale starting on May 14th via Ticketmaster .

Fans can also check out Snaith’s appearance on Kyle Meredith With…   discussing how he made the album after a six-year hiatus.

Dan Victor Snaith is an electro musician, composer and recording artist from Ontario, Canada and is better known by stage name Caribou.

Caribou is one of the most iconic and recognisable name on the electro circuit. Originally, Snaith began his musical career under the name Manitoba, but soon adopted the facade of Caribou due to being threatened with a hefty lawsuit. He has two albums released under his first stage name, 'Start Breaking My Heart' and 'Up In Flames' which are adored by his early cult following and hailed by critics for the intelligent electro evident there.

The first Caribou release came in 2005 in the form of 'The Milk of Human Kindness', a quote taken from Shakespeare's Macbeth. This album saw Snaith's reputation increase dramatically as he began touring to support the release of the debut of which he is joined by a host of live musicians, and plays percussion. The line up is currently Ryan Smith, Brad Weber, and John Schmersal along with Dan, his live show is an immersive experience as opposed to a conventional gig, using complex video projection to support the tracks in his discography.

Snaith's second release 'Andorra' was another critical success, most notably winning the 2008 Polaris Music Prize whilst his third release 'Swim' was also short listed for the prize. His 2014 release 'Our Love' saw Caribou achieve his greatest commercial success in the US and native Canada due to his elevated status, reputation and accolades. Critics once again hailed the blends of R & B and hip hops influences with his slick brand of electro on singles such as 'Can't Do Without You'.

Live reviews

I‘ve seen Caribou twice before, both in smaller and I dare say better venues, but more on that later. So I went into this show with high expectations. in fact, Caribou has been among my best live show experiences.

Unfortunately Dan Snaith (and his 3 accompanying musicians) didn’t t deliver the same level of performance that I’ve come to expect from Caribou. Electronic music is hard to play live, it’s hard because it’s so easy. Too many DJs and EDM musicians lack musicianship because they’re programmers. It’s hard to convey the same level of energy and dynamism fiddling with levels and activating programmed beats as one gets from someone wielding an instrument. And yet, some groups do this well, some are great and then there’s Caribou. What has set him apart (and still does no matter my misgivings for this last show) is his ability to actually perform techno -- In that he is very much like LCD Soundsystem. The result is a spectacularly enfranchised version of techno.

Snaith (along with Smith, Weber and Schmersal) give you a techno experience like none other, wielding guitar, base, two drums kits and myriad apparatus more traditionally associated with electronic music. So why didn’t I get into the show at the Metropolis on November 10th? Because techno is all about flow and Caribou never hit his stride.

I believe the main culprit for this is his shift towards dance music. If you can’t appreciate the difference between techno and EDM than never mind. There were popier elements emerging on Swim but with his foray as Daphni, Snaith has been pushing the dancier side of his music and so Our Love is far more EDM than Techno. That isn’t a critic but in the 13 years since his first album, he has become very good at performing techno so its easy to notice his failure to integrate his new material into his older stuff.

There are glaring issues with pacing, mood and flow, which is three different ways of saying the same thing, his setlist was no good. To be more precise, he hasn’t yet developed a homogenous skill level between his various styles of music which would allow him to integrate those same various musical styles.

It didn’t help that more than half the crowd were talking throughout the show and uninvested in the music. The sound guy did a good job equalizing the show but had the volume so far down that the chatting from the crowd easily overwhelmed the band as though we were at a folk show!

But mostly, Caribou failed to create the right atmosphere. He never reached that level of groove where songs bounce off one another. Alternatively exciting and sedating you in order to build a crescendo of swelling emotion. He stumbled on his newer material, seeding them throughout in such a way as to throw cold water on any enthusiasm built=up through his earlier tracks.

With expectations of such levels of mastery is there any surprise I was disappointed? Well yes, because Caribou is that good, just not this time.

Daniel Victor Snaith’s brainchild, Caribou, uses layers of electronics to create a diverse range of sounds that will either make you want to dance to the rhythm or have a psychedelic freak out. Although Snaith is the sole composer of Caribou’s music, he often tours with a very talented backing band. The main core of Caribou’s compositions consists of synthesizers and electronics, but when Caribou performs live they incorporate electric guitars, a bass, and acoustic drums, which create a more rich and lively tone. When Caribou performs live they stress that attention should be focused on the music and not the performers. When I saw Caribou open for Radiohead in 2012 all the performing members were dressed in identical white attire. This emphasized that the performance had little to do about the individual performers, but rather Caribou was a united vessel delivering a form of music that is organically created and which should be the main focus.

The light designs have been known to be fantastic at Caribou shows with strobe lights flashing on and off synchronized to the rhythm of the beat. The crowd is also very responsive to the music ecstatically dancing away like they were in a club scene. The music is often composed of melodies that repeat themselves, but are always changing texture and gradually building into more elaborate sounds rewarding the audience that pays attention to each intricate subtlety. Caribou remains a master at synthesizing the most pleasantly catchy tunes that will mesmerize you into a psychedelic trance and transcend you into another dimension of music.

Caribou is a MUST SEE experience. The band has fun and keeps the crowd dancing the entire time! Also, a lot of the songs have a different sort of live improvisation that the recordings on the LP do not have. Dan Snaith switches off from playing the synth to drums and back multiple times which I happened to find very unexpected. Overall the experience of driving three hours East from San Antonio to Houston to catch this show and drive back the same night was amazing. Caribou made the drive definitely worth it and had me moving the whole time. Do not miss them!

I went to this gig expecting nothing (not knowing the last album but knowing that their first album was awesome.) It has to be said like this : Caribou live is mind-blowing, delivering a unique tasteful performance and making everyone willing to dance starting the first song. Needless to say I'll run to the next concert !

Caribou consistently puts on amazing live shows. And this one in particular was special b/c I was close enough to the stage to see that he was smiling after every single song. Love like that for what you're doing can't help but be contagious!

Caribou always put on a good show, and I knew they wouldn't disappoint. They kept the crowd going and moving with a good mix of their best old jams and a lot of their new ones! Don't ever miss out on seeing them when they are in your city!

CARIBOU IN CONCERT: Canadian folktronica master Caribou, a.k.a Dan Snaith, continues to explore the farthest-flung corners of the sonic universe with his eclectic productions, expanding his musical palette to include elements of chillwave, neo-psychedelia, and even EDM. Caribou's live shows are just as ambitious as his recordings, featuring multiple drummers and massive avant-garde video projections that add new dimension to dance floor-friendly gems like "Odessa" and "Can't Do Without You". With Our Love -- his first full-length since 2010's Swim -- hitting shelves in 2014, Caribou has fans eagerly awaiting the opportunity to experience cuts from the album in the flesh on one of his must-see tours. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Ontario-born Dan Snaith debuted his unique brand of folk-tinged electronica in 2000 under the name Manitoba. After dropping several critically acclaimed releases under the moniker, he retired it due to threats of legal action from punk rock singer Richard "Handsome Dick" Manitoba, reemerging as Caribou in 2005 with the album The Milk of Human Kindness. After extensive touring in support of the release Snaith returned to the studio to record 2007's Andorra, which received the prestigious 2008 Polaris Music Prize. 2010's dance music-influenced Swim LP was also honored as a shortlist contender for the prize, bringing him back out on the road for another series of electrifying shows. With the highly anticipated album Our Love out in 2014, Snaith has ticket buyers chomping at the bit for a chance to catch him live.

OK, full disclosure I am a Caribou super fan, been listening since Caribou was Manitoba. So I was very much excited about this show especially because I didn’t know when it was coming, like so many things, the pandemonium robbed Caribou fans of a tour in 2020 after the release of Suddenly. OK so the show was incredible satisfying you will get all the songs that you want to hear and more. The live drumming and the way the songs come to life at this show is just is amazing. It’s hard to imagine some of these songs that are quite electronic being brought to live instruments but they do it so beautifully, I personally love the mesh and inter-layering of live and electronic sounds it’s so wonderful. The visuals are just perfect. It’s a wonderful dance experience hypnotic and joyful. Whether you are a fan or if you are a newcomer you will have a beautiful auditory and visual experience. I can promise you this because there was a young woman standing in front of me who had only been familiar with the music for three days and she seemed like she was having an epic time. I can’t say enough good things about it. it’s worth every bit of exhaustion I’m feeling right now. Go to this show!

Fantastic dance show

One of the best live shows I've been to. The set was exhilarating and original, the visuals were fantastic, would recommend.

Excercise your demons

I’ve listened to Caribou. For years. My girlfriend didn’t really know them at all sans a few songs that Alexa spews out. She wasn’t excited to go see them. Neither one of us knew we were attending a show that would have us dancing the entire time. The lighting show provided sensory overload at times. She left a fan.

good show, old chap

Thanks for the lively show, Caribou. It was great to have a mix from the different albums. I'm not sure why, but there's something incredible about having two drummers kicking ass together.

Caribou and JESSY LANZA were incredible

I havent been to a show in a long time. this show was so great and Jessy Lanza murdered me.

so much fun. Such an amazing performance. Caribou will never disappoint.

Caribou

Caribou is back Tuesday (Oct. 8) with his first new music in five years. The single, “Home,” samples a song of the same name by ’70s soul singer Gloria Barnes and marks the first new music from Caribou since his universally acclaimed 2015 LP Our Love . On “Home,” the producer born Dan Snaith uses the sample as a foundation, adding flourishes of harp, orchestral strings and a warm production that evokes the same era in which the original was created.

“I’m always listening to lots of music and sometimes a loop just jumps out at me — it’s too perfect,” Snaith is quoted in a press release. “That’s how it was with Gloria Barnes’ ‘Home’ — I kept returning to it, meaning to do something with it but not knowing what. Sometimes making music feels like a process I’m in charge of … but there are other times when things just present themselves and my job is to follow their lead. It wasn’t until the circumstances of someone close to me mirrored the refrain of the original song that the track all came together.

Caribou's Dan Snaith Discusses Daphni Project & DJing Approach

Trending on billboard.

“When I’ve played it to friends, several of them have said that they feel like it’s speaking to their circumstances, about people close to them,” Snaith adds in regards to the track’s meaning. “We’ve all had moments when something changes suddenly and catalyses a change in your whole life – when you need to go back to something familiar, pick up the pieces and start again.”

The single release is accompanied by news of Caribou’s first tour dates his shows behind  Our Love. The extensive North American and European tour kicks off in Canada in February of 2020. Listen to “Home” and see Caribou’s upcoming tour dates below.

Mission: Caribou

caribou tours

June 24- 29 and June 29 - July 4, 2024

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) Trips

Each and every summer the Porcupine River caribou herd congregates in northern Alaska for one of the world’s most inspiring wildlife migrations. By late June, the herd swells to nearly 225,000 animals and we regularly see thousands and even tens of thousands of caribou climbing tundra ridges and swimming icy rivers.

Arctic Refuge Trip, Porcupine Caribou

TRIP DETAILS

It is a thrilling experience to watch a valley fill with caribou. The sound of 60,000 caribou walking through your camp cannot be described. But because Arctic Alaska is so vast and the caribou vary their route from year to year, it can be difficult to plan a trip to see this wildlife spectacle. Their movements are affected by snow depth, temperature, insect abundance and wind direction to name just a few factors. It is almost impossible to predict where they will be tomorrow never mind next June, but it is not Mission: Impossible… it is Mission: Caribou! We have a plan to get you into the herd.

Before your arrival we will be gathering information from pilots, biologists and others in the field. On the day your trip begins, together with our bush pilot, we will decide on the best place to set-up our base camp. One summer we had 40,000 caribou pass by our camp for three days! Being around that many caribou also means we have an excellent chance of seeing large predators such as wolves, bears and wolverines, even Golden Eagles, soaring overhead looking for caribou calves to eat.

While we never could guarantee that we will hit the big migration, this trip will give you your best shot. The focus of this trip is to see large groups of caribou, but you will also be in one of the most beautiful places on the planet!

The wildflowers will be in full bloom, the hundreds of species of migrating birds will have returned and we hope the mosquitoes will have not yet hatched. It’s a wonderful time to be in the Arctic with or without the caribou.

With 24 hours of daylight and nearly limitless wilderness all around, there is no end to the exploration we can do. Each day we will head off in a different direction seeking wildlife and vistas. How far you choose to hike each day is largely up to you, but the more you can hike, the more wildlife you are likely to see.

We will have two separate campsites on this trip in an effort to double your chances of seeing caribou and to give you a sense of the diversity of the Arctic Refuge. Mid-way through the trip our pilot will return to shuttle us to a new campsite where the search for caribou and good hiking resumes.

There is an old saying in the North which translates roughly into “No one knows the way of the wind or the caribou” which hints at the difficulty of finding caribou. There are certainly no guarantees on a trip like this, but the search is always rewarding no matter the outcome.

What follows is a general flow of events. Expect the unexpected and prepare to be flexible.

June 23 or (June 28th) depending on which trip you join

Meet with your guide for a pre-trip meeting at 4 pm in Fairbanks at Arctic Wild headquarters .

June 24 (29)

We fly from Fairbanks to the tiny Gwich’in village of Arctic Village where we meet with our bush pilot and decide where we should fly to put ourselves in the path of the migrating caribou.

June 25- 26 (June 30 - July 1)

We spend our time exploring the area looking for caribou and other wildlife. Your guide will lead hikes in hopes we can place ourselves in a hidden location in the path of the caribou. There will be times when no caribou are present, but there is no end to the beauty of the arctic.

June 27 (July 2)

Weather permitting, we move our camp to a new location in the Arctic Refuge. Perhaps our first guess about where the herds would be was off and we will try again to get you into the aggregation. Or perhaps you have had a couple days with the caribou and want to see a different landscape or hike in the Brooks Range.

June 28 (July 3)

Another full day to enjoy the solitude and beauty of North America’s greatest wilderness. More hiking and wildlife watching is the order of the day.

June 29 (July 4)

We say our last goodbyes and meet our bush pilot for our flight back to Fairbanks for hot showers and a soft bed. Weather permitting we arrive back in time for a late dinner.

I had a great time. This trip was amazing in every single way. Definitely one I will never forget. ….an amazing guide. As good as you can ask for: knowledgeable, cool, great cook, always positive… Kind of guy who can turn the worst scenario into the best. Definitely the best guide I’ve ever had, hands down!
