The Ultimate Guide to All PROTREKs — composed by Experts

It’s time to study one of the last representatives of the ProTrek line of the PRW-6000-1ER model, which is considered to be the second after the PRW-3000 with an updated sensor [the newest ProTrek representative at the moment is PRW-3500].

casio pro trek prw 6000

My acquaintance with the trecks began with the PRW-3000 [PRW-3000 – honestly about the beautiful], which, although they received an updated sensor, fell in my eyes after significant wear on the bezel. Well, how is it, obvious tourist watches with such a defect? I do not even know. I’m trying to find excuses and so far I don’t see them. Probably the watch is designed more for running or swimming than for more aggressive tourism.

casio pro trek prw 6000

And now, I look at the PRW-6000-1ER and observe the atonement for all the shortcomings: the bezel is metal [stainless steel], the buttons are metal [at least the crown], the case is a single molded structure [albeit plastic]. And this is really a solid piece of steel, and not just for visibility [as it was before].

casio pro trek prw 6000

I believe that the problem of bezel fraying in the PRW-6000 simply does not exist. I was also surprised by the presence of steel [both in color and in composition (although I can be mistaken)] buttons, where the scarred surface stands out very nicely against the general background.

casio pro trek prw 6000

This is a completely different level of ProTreks, gentlemen, and the PRW-3000 series seems to be just a kind of “offspring”. Alas, it was just such feelings that I had, although comparing the PRW-3000 and PRW-6000 is also not very ethical [if only for the simple reason that both models are of completely different types of dials: an-digi and fully digital].

casio pro trek prw 6000

The hands in a multi-function watch can be loved and hated, but this is a matter of taste, and Casio people are accustomed to adapt to different taste needs of a person [take only a variety of color options of the same model]. Only, the Japanese learned to make a digital watch a long time ago, but combining the “arrow” with the “digit” will be more serious [technically], but they still succeeded. It was possible to make not only a clock with arrows, but a clock where the arrows perform many functions, and this is really cool.

casio pro trek prw 6000

Well, let’s move on to the functionality of the watch, since I’m talking so much about it. In PRW-6000-1ER, one just cannot help but notice the so-called “crown”, which has a very serious name – Smart Access. Now attention! If this is the first time you have heard this technology, it’s not so easy to deal with all the subtleties [I already remembered it by the GW-A1000-1AER model]. But this is only if you do not understand the principle at all, and then it’s a matter of habit. I was lucky, I already know that you need to press the button and crank [and that it can still be pushed one click].

casio pro trek prw 6000

The first thing I’m trying to figure out is setting the time. This is the most basic setting that every owner should know, and, you know, it was difficult for me to do. The standard methods [clamp “adjust did not help me, so I had to plunge into this wonderful world of Casio instructions [I use only the official English version]. It turns out that the manufacturer is confident in the operability of the radio synchronization function, and considers manual tuning not so necessary. It’s all cool, but the coverage of the CIS countries [by the German tower] is very sad, so our market is de facto forced to know the manual tuning.

First you need to pull out the “head” [excuse me] for one click, and then [when rotating] select the desired time zone [city signs on the bezel]. In principle, as soon as I chose a suitable time zone, the arrows immediately became in the positions I needed, but I decided not to stop there [what if there was an inaccuracy?].

casio pro trek prw 6000

If you want to work with “pens” on each arrow, then press D once once and the electronic board will tell you which arrow is currently activated [HOUR-MIN should appear first – minute]. Next – just rotate the crown and the minute hand will be at the desired position. Trying to switch to the hour hand? The diagram below will help you.

casio pro trek prw 6000

Although the hands of the PRW-6000-1ER are “empty” and the electronic window is visible through them, you can still tilt them to the neutral position at the two o’clock position [hold the backlight and the lower left button at the same time]. As our readers have already said, you need to do this only with two hands, and if the watch is on your hand, moving the hands is rather problematic [let’s say it is inconvenient, even very]. And I didn’t like that, for example, in the stopwatch mode, I can’t remove the arrows completely for a while, and just press STOP – the arrows move to their usual location. Here, it seems like the Casio are trying to do everything right, but there are still flaws. I hope in the new models we will see more usable solutions.

casio pro trek prw 6000

I will not talk about functions anymore, there are plenty of them in the PRW-6000-1ER [after all, an ABC watch is an altimeter, altimeter, compass plus a thermometer. I also like the hourly alarm and there is resistance from cold to -10].

casio pro trek prw 6000

The backlight in the watch is, and very good. It is also called “Double LED” – when not only the electronic display is illuminated, but also the surface around the arrows. Only the substantial brightness of the digital window confuses, while the light is distributed more or less evenly across the main display. To consider both the arrows and the “number” is not difficult.

casio pro trek prw 6000

The strap is large and resilient [seemed even stronger than the PRW-3000]. There are linings on the inside – a very convenient feature. Branded inscriptions are also approx.

PRW-6000-1ER can be called the best ProTrek analogs in the entire history of the lineup. To be honest, I don’t even look at old ana-Digi tracks for the simple reason that they use the old sensor. The assembly is very high quality, and the metal bezel this time inspires confidence [in terms of stability]. Lovers of arrows and functions – this is your choice.

casio pro trek prw 6000

Writing fair reviews can often be a bit difficult as it requires balancing your own personal preferences, needs and desires against both the designers’/makers’ ambitions, and also against the more generic readers’ need for an independent perspective. These three can at times be quite different and this is especially true for feature rich equipment like watches. Therefore, I think I should begin by trying to describe the things that I personally look for in a watch.

First of all, I want a watch that fits extreme outdoors as well as everyday use, meaning it has to be comfortable, look good and be   reasonably discreet in an urban context, and still be capable of taking quite a beating. Second, I want something I can always trust, both with the data it provides, and that it won’t fail me when I need it the most, meaning it needs to have a certain build quality and I don’t want it to unexpectedly run out of power. Ideally, I want it to be powered by kinetic or solar power, like my trusty old Seiko Kinetic Relay watch. Third, I want my watch to be instantly readable, and I prefer to have analog hands as they can also be used for crude navigation, if I ever find myself without a working compass.

Now, how does today’s watch, the Casio Pro Trek PRW-6000 meet those preferences? Let’s first have a look at the basics.

Watch design

The watch is quite light with a weight of a mere 72 g, which means you will hardly notice wearing it, weightwise. It comes with five buttons and a digital crown which you unscrew and pull out to adjust the settings of the watch, and then secure again by pushing in and locking in place. The buttons are used for a variety of purposes and can switch funcion when pressed or held for 2 seconds. The two buttons on the right are for displaying compass, or rather magnetic or true north , and altitude respectively, while the two on the left change what time info is displayed and the various modes. The bottom button is for the manual backlighting, and can be set to display for 1.5 or 3 seconds.

The materials used are stainless steel, synthetic resin and mineral glass for the watch, and synthetic resin for the wristband. The profile is tighter than some adventure style watches, but still sticks out compared to more traditional watches with its width-, height-, and depth measurements of 52,1mm x 47,9mm x 12,79mm. Note that various places here give incorrect data, including official sites.

The hands, especially the minute hand, overlap the digital display, which can be a bit of an annoyance. It is of course not an uncommon issue with watches that combine analog and digital displaying of time. And the maker is aware of this issue and therefore added a software function for temporarily moving the hands out of the way by the pressing of the low mid “light” button together with the low left button. Still it feels like more of a makeshift solution, being a bit awkward, and the issue could have been lessened through increasing the size of the digital display and the characters used.

casio pro trek prw 6000

The stick dial is clean, as is the digital display. The contrast in the latter could perhaps be a bit stronger, but works well enough.

The small subdial indicates the function mode chosen; Barometer, Thermometer, Data Recall, Stopwatch, Countdown Timer, Alarm, World Time , and Receive modes. Clicking through the modes is one direction counter-clockwise only, meaning you have to press the mode button repeatedly to go through all the modes. You can’t go clockwise, so be careful not to press too many times or you have to go through them all again.

The digital display is of course used to present most data, but the analog hands too are used for some data, e.g. showing North, and barometric pressure differential .

As one would expect from this type of watch, you find not only the basics of time keeping, date/month, stop watch, countdown timer and the option of five different alarm times, as well as hourly “beeps”, but also more adventure oriented functions like compass, barometer/altimeter and thermometer. Some of these, like the compass and the thermometer, require calibration, some of them, like the altimeter even repeated calibration , right before use, while others, like the time keeping itself is automatic and self-adjusting.

Setting up the watch and calibrating it can feel a bit daunting at first and you will likely need to have a look at the manual. The watch can be set with both Home City Time and World Time set for a specific city, easily switching between the two with the press of a button. World Time mode can also be used to check the time in 29 time zones, marked by city codes on the inner bezel.

Likewise, the use of barometer alarms for drastic change in barometic pressure, indicating a weather change, will take some manual reading. Luckily the 116 page manual is both extensive and fairly easy to read.

casio pro trek prw 6000

Looking to the technology, the watch uses three high quality, precise sensors for measuring air pressure, temperature and direction respectively, marked as orange in the picture on the right. This is the third generation of these highly sensitive miniature sensors developed by Casio.

Reliability & Durability

Reliability here is dependent on three things; continuously correct data , consistent displaying of data , and  durability , in turn dependent on power , synchronizatio/calibration and build quality . We need to consider all these when we look at how reliable this watch is.

As already touched upon, several of the functions rely on calibration, even repeated calibration, in order to display reliable data. It appears as if some users miss this and therefore believe they are experiencing issues, but it is really no fault of the watch itself. Properly calibrated when needed, it is a highly reliable watch, as also testified to by many others.

Looking to accuracy, it has a ±15 second deviation per month, which alone is very good, but if the setting for it is set to on, the watch will also automatically make up to six attempts per day to synchronize the time over radio, to correct atomic watch time, and also does hourly adjusting of all hands to correct positions for the time zone you have set the watch to. Simply put, timewise, you can trust this watch.

The watch is said to be functionally reliable down to temperatures of -10°C/-14°F, and while that may at first appear a too high temperature, in reality you normally won’t carry your watch exposed at lower temperatures, instead wearing it underneath a jacket and gloves.

casio pro trek prw 6000

Being made from stainless steel, mineral glass and synthetic resin it is hard as nails, and intentionally built to be one of the toughest watches on the market in the price range. As expected it is waterproof to 10 bar/100 meters, meaning it is more than good enough for swimming and snorkling, but not a proper diver’s watch.

casio pro trek prw 6000

Having used it extensively, with daily use over a period of well over two years, in a wide variety of circumstances, ranging from hiking in the high heat, and the chill, of the South African plains and mountains, to both summer and winter forest lakeside camping and canoeing, to small hiking in the proper cold in the far north of a wintery Sweden, it has never failed me. The steel and resin is naturally starting to look slightly worn, but the glass is still completely scratch free.

Readability & Comfort

This is one of those oh-so-important-but-often-forgotten aspects of a watch. You should never hesitate in the last, trying to tell the time when you look at your watch, be it day or night. Here I am a bit torn. I would have prefered for the watch to have solid hands instead of hollowed out ones, like on the PRW-7000 models. With solid hands you could also have had properly fluorescent hands instead of just the very small and hard to read glowing points at the end, to match the nice glow-in-the dark markers on the dial.

casio pro trek prw 6000

The perfectly flat glass is shiny and can be quite reflective at the wrong angle, but even so, you will be able to see the hands and markers through the reflection, and just twisting your wrist a little removes that minor issue.

Comfortwise, the watch and the wristband are very nice, although I at first felt that the large crown arrangement dug into wrist and hand when doing certain work with my left hand. However, loosening up the wristband a little removed the issue and I soon didn’t notice any of this anymore, in fact no longer even feeling I was wearing it.

Final thoughts

casio pro trek prw 6000

First of all, I absolute adore the fact that it is solar powered. I wore my old kinetic watch for near 20 years before replacing it with this one, never changing batteries once and never having it fail me. While it has only been two years, I expect no different from this watch. I simply can’t imagine depending on watches which require changing of batteries when you have the option to choose not to.

Looking to the functions, I have little real need for some of them, but I do use the compass every now and then, to double check my direction, and it works very well for just that. And I can always use the analog hands for rough estimation of direction too. The time keeping is, as already mentioned, perfect and hassle free, with the watch taking care of itself through the radio self-calibration, even changing automatically for summer/winter time if needed. I also appreciate that you can turn on and off the beeping sounds for the buttons, as I do not want to scare off wildlife when I am out in the woods. Functions like measuring how much you have ascended or descended a mountain, and having warnings for weather change are cool functions, but personally, I just don’t have much use for them since I don’t climb mountains and I normally just need to look at the sky and the clouds to know what weather I will be having later.

Turning to the software, a few bits are a slightly counter-intuitive, like the one-way navigating between the different modes. And, setting things up properly is perhaps a bit more complex than expected, requiring having to study the manual to learn how the functions of the buttons shift depending on context and depending on whether you press or hold them for varying numbers of seconds. Still, if you give it the time needed, it is a fantastic watch that fits my needs perfectly. The only missing feature I would like to see added, or tweaked, is for the dials and hands to be more brightly fluorescent, removing the need for the use of backlighting in the dark.

The looks of the watch, finally, hits a perfect balance between utility and style, looking both quite functional and pragmatic, but not overbearingly so, or too “tactical” or “macho”, and thus works equally well with a suit and tie as with your outdoors or military surplus apparel. I have to admit though, that the PRW-7000-3JF model is even more attractive , with its slick look, but the PRW-6000 is a fantastic watch and I can happily recommend it to anyone looking for a tough watch with some practical outdoors features and with an eternal power source.

Tested: Casio ProTrek PRW-6000Y-1A

While Casio’s G-Shock series has the extreme sports category on lock down, their ProTrek line is blazing a trail in the world of outdoor adventure.

While Casio’s G-Shock series has the extreme sports arena on lock down, their ProTrek line is blazing a trail in the world of outdoor adventure. The PRW-6000Y-1A ($500) is made for the aspiring ambler. In many ways, it’s about the most trustworthy, comely companion a beginning mountaineer could need.

For a watch so analog in appearance — its large dial is complemented by a smaller function dial on the face — the ProTrek carries with it a bundle of digital smarts. The brains rest in Casio’s Version 3 Triple Sensor technology, integrating an altimeter, barometer, and compass (ABC). Coupled with the trifecta is a thermometer, atomic timekeeping that keeps the ticks on track, and a solar-powered battery that gives infinite mobility without the need for a charge.

On the wrist, the watch wears comfortably, although its weighty presence isn’t easily forgotten. The carbon fiber band may seem gratuitous at first, but a band that ostensibly lives on forever is a good thing. The watch is water- and sweat-resistant and handles well on light swims , as well as during switchback hiking and light jogs.

Whereas most multifunction chronographs are more geared towards user-friendliness than ruggedness, the ProTrek comes off as a bit of a throwback to an earlier era — a time when users found pride in doing some squinty-eyed reading to decipher the manual. The how-to of the ProTrek’s 11 settings aren’t instinctive, but Casio’s directions are clear and eventually using the watch becomes intuitive.

The altimeter and compass get their own buttons and are at your ready disposal, making clear the watch’s intentions (finding your way while going up). In ascending and descending elevation the altimeter is decently reliable, but Casio’s own reminder to “perform regular calibrations” is apt. Altitude is calculated based on barometric pressure, and it often wasn’t pinpoint accurate. The compass was spot on during testing, even though Casio also caveats that “for serious trekking and mountain climbing” you’d be best to bring along a second compass to confirm. For $500, you’d probably prefer to not have to double-check.

The watch is smart, and it’s a solid workhorse. Small touches like Casio’s “hand shift” (the hands automatically move away from the digital display when using one of the functions) are good reminders that this timepiece is extremely intelligent; but features like the LED light — which gives just a pinprick of light at night — aren’t brilliant. For the watch’s price, I’d also be tempted to look for some of the perks of a GPS-capable watch, and a more visible digital display (Garmin’s trail wearables come to mind).

For the seasoned adventurer , the watch is a step short — there’s benefit from more precise equipment. But, for the layman who wants to track altitude, total ascents and descents (on the trail or when skiing the slopes), keep tabs on weather patterns, and always know the time, the watch is more than capable, and it’s got solid looks. And that is perhaps its best selling point: the watch encases modern tech features, but most importantly, those features encourage an interest in classic outdoorsmanship.

With the ProTrek PRW 6000Y, Casio introduced the concept of a lightweight, carbon fiber outdoors watch for the picky customer. The 6000Y is packed with everything from the famous triple sensor to the small things like a countdown timer or a stopwatch. Besides being a fully featured watch, the design is also one of the strong points. It rocks an analog-digital display with a double LED light for added readability in any conditions.

ProTrek PRW6000Y Review-2

The carbon fiber inserted band is no joke when it comes to the overall weight of the watch. Compared to other ProTreks the PRW 6000Y comes at a weight of 73 g which distributes to a large footprint, thus making it feel incredibly lightweight. This is not to say, however, that the size of the watch will go unnoticed. You will actually have to wear it for a period of time before you get used to its size.

As said in the beginning, the design is great and the dial is clean. The hour markers and index hands feature a bright paint for dark environments plus the LED backlights which make things brighter when the environment requires it.

ProTrek PRW6000Y Review-4

The triple sensor incorporates an altimeter / barometer, a compass, and a thermometer. While it is hard to state that these sensors are accurate, at least, they offer estimative values. For example, the thermometer is almost certainly unreliable when you wear the watch due to the heat from your hand. The altimeter or barometer while useful to make estimates of the altitude you are at a certain moment, or the pressure, they cannot be used in professional tasks. The compass, however, is pretty accurate. This is not to say that the triple sensor is not useful, but you need to be aware that these features won’t represent replacements for professional tools; just like the pliers or screwdrivers from a multi-tool. It is nice to wear a multi-tool for fast fixes but on the long term, you will most certainly have to use dedicated tools.

ProTrek PRW6000Y Review-7

There are dedicated buttons for the main features which make configuration easier and faster, and the crown is easy to use. Other than that the band with carbon fiber insertion fits well on the wrist no matter if it comes in contact with water or rubber materials like a wetsuit. That is especially helpful for divers and others who frequently come in contact with water.

ProTrek PRW6000Y Review-8

In order to draw a conclusion, the ProTrek PRW 6000Y is a great pick for those looking for a top of the line ProTrek which comes with most of the great features available at the moment in this price range. Consider this watch if you are looking for a lightweight outdoors watch that will last for years.

Brand Story

CasioWith the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, atomic timekeeping means the users never have to reset the time. Recently, Casio launched a series of Bluetooth watches that sync to the users cell phone to automatically update the time. Casio is always moving time forward. NULL

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

casio pro trek prw 6000

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

casio pro trek prw 6000

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

casio pro trek prw 6000

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

casio pro trek prw 6000

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

casio pro trek prw 6000

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

casio pro trek prw 6000

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

casio pro trek prw 6000

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

  1. Casio ProTrek PRW-6000 Review

Conclusion. PRW-6000-1ER can be called the best ProTrek analogs in the entire history of the lineup. To be honest, I don't even look at old ana-Digi tracks for the simple reason that they use the old sensor. The assembly is very high quality, and the metal bezel this time inspires confidence [in terms of stability].
