La Rochelle, France cruise holidays
With glistening white buildings lining the old harbour, the city of La Rochelle is known as ‘La Ville Blanche’. Further in, cobblestoned streets and medieval arcades make for a picturesque wander under the gaze of watchful gargoyles – yet the city is far from stuck in the past.
The 14th century twin towers of St Nicolas Fort and the Tour de la Chaine (named after the chain once drawn across the harbour to keep out night intruders) ensure a dramatic entrance when you cruise between them into the French Atlantic cruise port La Rochelle-Pallice.
The medieval city of La Rochelle is just 10 minutes away and offers an intriguing mix of well preserved and restored historic buildings and marketplaces within a lively modern city full of bars and restaurants and with an excellent aquarium. Tickle your taste buds with a visit to the small town of Cognac and its famous Courvoisier, Hennessy and Martell cellars. Along the way, you will pass through ancient towns like Saintes with Romanesque churches, arches and arenas.
A dramatic 3km-long bridge connects the city to the romantic Île de Ré, but despite the island’s connection to the mainland, it still retains its off-the-beaten-path feel with rural lanes leading to long sandy beaches.

What to see in La Rochelle
La Rochelle, a historic port city on the French Atlantic coast, is a vibrant blend of maritime history, architectural beauty and modern leisure. This enchanting city, with its iconic harbour and towers, offers a variety of experiences that cater to history enthusiasts, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation.
The heart of La Rochelle is its Old Harbour (Vieux Port), an area brimming with history and charm. Stroll along the quays, lined with restaurants and cafes, and soak in the lively atmosphere. The harbour is dominated by three impressive medieval towers, the guardians of the city's rich maritime past. The most notable is Saint Nicholas Tower, which you can climb to enjoy panoramic views of the city and the sea. These towers, once fortifications and prisons, now serve as fascinating museums that delve into La Rochelle’s history as a significant seafaring and trading hub.
One of Europe’s largest private aquariums, La Rochelle Aquarium, is a short walk from the port. This state-of-the-art facility takes you on an immersive journey through the oceans of the world. Home to over 12,000 marine animals, including sharks, jellyfish and tropical fish, the aquarium is both an educational and visually stunning experience. The exhibits are designed to raise awareness about marine conservation, making it an informative visit for all ages. Don’t miss the mesmerising jellyfish room and the opportunity to touch friendly rays in the touch pool.
For those looking to relax and soak up the sun, Minimes Beach is the perfect destination. Located a short distance from the city centre, this sandy beach offers a serene escape from the urban hustle. The beach is well-equipped with amenities and is ideal for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying watersports. The nearby marina, one of the largest in Europe, adds to the nautical charm of the area. The beachfront also features a promenade with cafes and shops, making it a great spot for a leisurely stroll or a seaside meal.

La Rochelle, France Cruises
Top la rochelle cruise deals, cruising to la rochelle.
Having been one of France's most important seaports during the Middle Ages, La Rochelle provides a fascinating glimpse at a bygone era, with ancient forts , cobbled walkways and gargoyle statues helping to transport visitors back to times of yore.
However, not everything here is old, and the city's historic attractions are wonderfully contrasted with the state-of-the-art aquarium - which is one of the finest in the world. Upon entering, visitors descend all the way down to the sea bed, where they then take a journey through a glass tunnel to discover the submarine wonders of the Atlantic.
Back on dry land, La Rochelle's most iconic attractions are the two defensive towers which stand at either side of the entrance to the harbour. Built in the 14th century, the towers were once connected by an enormous chain which would be raised each night in order to prevent invading ships from entering the port.
Elsewhere, the Musee du Nuveau Monde provides a fascinating insight into the role that La Rochelle once played as a major departure point for voyages to the Americas, while the Museum of Fine Arts boasts a superb collection of pieces dating from the 15th to 20th centuries.

One of the most exciting locations in town is La Base Sous-Marine, which was built during World War II so the Germans could protect the country's U-boat fleet from aerial attack. Beautiful City Riverscape
The city's gem, the river Garonne, flows from northern Spain into the Atlantic Ocean at Bordeaux. Take some time to stroll along the banks, passing green gardens as you take in the beautiful views. Lounge on the café terraces of the old warehouses on the Quai de Bacalan or take the ferry to the other side.
Local Cuisine
Not only the wine is magnifique in Bordeaux. Taste oysters from the Bay of Arcachon, delicious mushrooms, superb asparagus, organic ice cream and sweet raspberries. Les Halles de Bacalan, a contemporary food market in a waterfront hangar, is a great spot to grab a quick gourmet bite.

A family-owned aquarium situated in the centre of the city, the La Rochelle Aquarium is home to more than 12,000 animals. A popular attraction to visit, you’ll learn all about the 600 species that live in the aquarium, from what it takes to care for them to their origins.
If you love to learn about automotion, this museum is the place for you. Opened in 1993, this museum is home to more than 300 contemporary and historic models, historical scenes and more. Replicating Parisian street scenes, sailing vessels and other landscapes, this extraordinary attraction is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the centre.
Known as the gateway to the old part of the city, this Gothic-style clock tower dates back to the 12th century. A fascinating landmark that’s often photographed, Gross Horloge is a must see when stopping off in La Rochelle.
DAY 4 17 Jul 2023 Time at Port: from 8 AM to 5 PM
One of the Basque country’s best destinations, Bilbao is a hub of fascinating architecture, contemporary design and artistic flair in almost every direction you look. Start your exploration in Plaza Nueva for the best sightseeing, shopping and cuisine, as well as museums and galleries. You’ll also find many lush parks in the city and rolling hills in the surrounding areas, making this a truly unique experience in comparison to most Spanish city breaks.
Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, Bilbao Cathedral has a Gothic style exterior and interior, though with Renaissance and neo-Classical influences. Despite still being a working church, visitors can take a tour with information provided by an audio guide.
Towering from the top of a hill, the 16th-century Basilica de Begoña can be reached on foot or by an elevator from Calle Esperanza. Its imposing Gothic steeple makes a fantastic photo opportunity while, inside the basilica, you’ll find an intricate gold altarpiece.
Displaying works from the 12th century through to the present day, the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao is a must visit particularly for traditional art enthusiasts. Visitors will find paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings and more, organised by topic alphabetically.
One of the largest museums in Spain, the Guggenheim Museum is dedicated to showcasing modern and contemporary art. The building itself is a unique architectural landmark while inside you’ll find countless ever-changing exhibitions.
If you’re in need of some authentic Spanish cuisine after a long day of sightseeing and shopping, Plaza Nueva is the place to be. The square has a reputation as the city’s social gathering spot, hosting markets, bars, cafés and more. This is the place to try a renowned local pinxo!
DAY 5 18 Jul 2023 Time at Port: from 8 AM to 5 PM
Whether you’re looking to top up your tan on the beach with shops and restaurants just a short walk away, or looking to explore fascinating museums and ancient castles, La Coruna offers attractions for everyone. This trendy and modern city features a busy hub in the centre with an abundance of dining and shopping, as well as unique moments such as the Tower of Hercules. From here, enjoy the sweeping views out to sea – and don’t forget your camera!
Though this aquarium may be small, it features numerous rooms dedicated to the marine life in the Atlantic Ocean. Most notable is the Nautilus, a room submerged in the sea for optimal viewing of sharks, rays, octopus and many species of fish.
Dedicated to the science of human beings, Domus boasts more than 150 interactive features to educate and entertain visitors. Discover numerous exhibitions covering genetics, evolution and modern medicine, as well as the Open Laboratory space.
One of the most popular beaches in the city, Riazor beach stretches along the promenade with restaurants, bars and cafés in close proximity. You’ll find both golden sand and rockier areas, as well as calm water and waves perfect for surfing.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, the Tower of Hercules once served as a lighthouse and landmark for La Coruna harbour. Visitors can explore the basement and venture up 234 steps to the balcony to admire the vast views.
DAY 7 20 Jul 2023 Time at Port: from 8 AM to 10 PM
This charming port town in Normandy is the gateway to France's chic capital, but is also a destination in its own right. Stick around the coast to explore the Musée des Beaux Arts and the D-Day beaches, or go on an optional shore excursion to Mont St Michel, the medieval town of Rouen, or into Paris.
One of the most beautiful landmarks in Le Havre, St. Joseph’s Church was built 50 years ago and has a unique post-war design, with a 107m high ceiling, and a combination of concrete and stained glass. Situated in the centre of the city, this marvel of architecture is worth a visit when in Le Havre for a stop over.
The 19th-century Hanging Gardens provide an outstanding view of the sea, the Seine estuary, and the rebuilt city. They are housed in an ancient fort. From the top of these gardens, the World Heritage Site of Le Havre comes into view.
If you love history, or the grandeur of French architecture, the Maison de l’Armateur is a must see. Situated within a stately 18th century mansion, it features beautiful and historic artwork, furnishings dating back to the era of Louis XVI and an impressive octagonal atrium.

Southampton / Great Britain
Southampton is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, England. It is 69 miles (111 km) south-west of London and 15 miles (24 km) west north-west of Portsmouth. Southampton is a major port and the closest city to the New Forest. It lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the confluence of the Rivers Test and Itchen, with the River Hamble joining to the south of the urban area. The city, which is a unitary authority, has an estimated population of 253,651. The city's name is sometimes abbreviated in writing to "So'ton" or "Soton", and a resident of Southampton is called a Sotonian.
Significant employers in the city include Southampton City Council, the University of Southampton, Solent University, Southampton Airport, Ordnance Survey, BBC South, the NHS, ABP and Carnival UK. Southampton is noted for its association with the RMS Titanic , the Spitfire and more generally in the World War II narrative as one of the departure points for D-Day, and more recently as the home port of a number of the largest cruise ships in the world. Southampton has a large shopping centre and retail park, Westquay. In 2014, the city council approved a neighbouring followup Westquay South which opened in 2016–2017.
In the 2001 census Southampton and Portsmouth were recorded as being parts of separate urban areas; however by the time of the 2011 census they had merged apolitically to become the sixth-largest built-up area in England with a population of 855,569. This built-up area is part of the metropolitan area known as South Hampshire, which is also known as Solent City , particularly in the media when discussing local governance organisational changes. With a population of over 1.5 million this makes the region one of the United Kingdom's most populous metropolitan areas.

Bilbao / spain.
Bilbao is a city in northern Spain, the largest city in the province of Biscay and in the Basque Country as a whole. It is also the largest city proper in northern Spain. Bilbao is the tenth largest city in Spain, with a population of 345,141 as of 2015. The Bilbao metropolitan area has roughly 1 million inhabitants, making it one of the most populous metropolitan areas in northern Spain; with a population of 875,552 the comarca of Greater Bilbao is the fifth-largest urban area in Spain. Bilbao is also the main urban area in what is defined as the Greater Basque region.
Bilbao is situated in the north-central part of Spain, some 16 kilometres (10 mi) south of the Bay of Biscay, where the economic social development is located, where the estuary of Bilbao is formed. Its main urban core is surrounded by two small mountain ranges with an average elevation of 400 metres (1,300 ft). Its climate is shaped by the Bay of Biscay low-pressure systems and mild air, moderating summer temperatures by Iberian standards, with low sunshine and high rainfall. The annual temperature range is low for its latitude.
After its foundation in the early 14th century by Diego López V de Haro, head of the powerful Haro family, Bilbao was a commercial hub of the Basque Country that enjoyed significant importance in Green Spain. This was due to its port activity based on the export of iron extracted from the Biscayan quarries. Throughout the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, Bilbao experienced heavy industrialisation, making it the centre of the second-most industrialised region of Spain, behind Barcelona. At the same time an extraordinary population explosion prompted the annexation of several adjacent municipalities. Nowadays, Bilbao is a vigorous service city that is experiencing an ongoing social, economic, and aesthetic revitalisation process, started by the iconic Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, and continued by infrastructure investments, such as the airport terminal, the rapid transit system, the tram line, the Azkuna Zentroa, and the currently under development Abandoibarra and Zorrozaurrerenewal projects.
Bilbao is also home to football club Athletic Club de Bilbao, a significant symbol for Basque nationalism due to its promotion of only Basque players and one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football history.
On 19 May 2010, the city of Bilbao was recognised with the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize, awarded by the city state of Singapore, in collaboration with the Swedish Nobel Academy. Considered the Nobel Prize for urbanism, it was handed out on 29 June 2010. On 7 January 2013, its mayor, Iñaki Azkuna, received the 2012 World Mayor Prize awarded every two years by the British foundation The City Mayors Foundation, in recognition of the urban transformation experienced by the Biscayan capital since the 1990s. On 8 November 2017, Bilbao was chosen the Best European City 2018 at The Urbanism Awards 2018, awarded by the international organisation The Academy of Urbanism.
La Coruña / Spain

A Coruña is a busy port located on a promontory in the Golfo Ártabro, a large gulf on the Atlantic Ocean. It provides a distribution point for agricultural goods from the region.

La Rochelle is a port city in southwestern France, located on Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean). It is also the capital of Charente-Maritime department. Since 1988, the town is connected to Ile de Re (island) via 3-km (2-mi) long bridge. Port's harbor opens into Pertuis d'Antioche - a protected strait separating Re Island (north) from Oleron Island (south). The town has population around 80,000 and total area approx 28 km2 (11 mi2).
City's best-known attraction is its picturesque "Old Harbour" ("Vieux Port") - located in downtown and lined with top-quality seafood restaurants. Old Town's walls are part of the waterfront promenade. Departing from the harbor, boat tours link to Ile d'Aix and Fort Boyard (stone fortress). Ile de Re is at a short drive to the north.
The surrounding countryside is rural. The marshy area Venise Verte is to the north, crisscrossed with small canals and a well-known resort for inland boating. Re Island is accessible through the sea bridge. OFP La Rochelle (freight railway) serves the seaport. Popular landmarks include St-Louis Cathedral, Orbigny-Bernon Museum, Museum d'Histoire Naturelle.
For season 2020, the cruise port had scheduled 18 ship calls with expected around 23, 000 tourists (passengers and crew). In 2018 were handled 13 ship calls and around 9,000 tourists.

The Port of Southampton – Cruise Capital of the UK
Cruising to La Rochelle, France
La rochelle, france tourist information..
The focus of the town is the old harbour, a lovely part of the town and very picturesque with its two monumental towers ( St Nicolas Tower and the Tower of the Chain ) either side of the port entrance, through which you can watch the boats enter. A third tower, the ‘ Tower of the Lantern ‘ is connected to the Chain Tower by a section of the ramparts that originally defended the town.
St Nicolas tower
The leaning tower of St Nicolas at the entrance to the old harbour was built in the early 14th century from the stones of a castle belonging to Henry II. Three times between the 12th and 14th centuries, La Rochelle was English. The St Nicolas tower contains a maze of steps and chambers, where soldiers have scratched their graffiti. There’s a great view from the top.
The old town, just behind the harbour, is extensive and also very well preserved and restored and dates mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The main shopping streets especially have many fine buildings, but you will also need to explore the side streets in this part of the town. The whole of the historic centre of La Rochelle has an impressive unified appearance, with arcaded streets, houses constructed in the local light stone, and light grey shutters. Boutiques now occupy the ground floor of many of the buildings.
