  • Ultimate Guide on How to Take Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek in Bhutan

This amazing six-day trek takes you high into the foothills of the Himalayas, to an area where a multitude of crystal clear lakes shimmer in the bright sunlight. Located in the area of Thimphu and Paro, the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is one of the iconic trekking trails in Bhutan, and a unique chance to see some of the most stunning high mountains of the Bhutanese Himalayas in a short trek. Bhutan is the last remaining Himalayan kingdom, and with its pristine environment and policy of eco-friendly tourism, this is one trek that you will not want to miss in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

The Highlights of Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

• Medium level short trek • Easy access from Paro and the capital city Thimphu • A multitude of pristine and crystal clear lakes • Epic vista of stunning Himalaya Mountains • Gorgeous landscapes with lush wildflowers and meadows • Ascending to holy Jomo (Dagala) Peak in 4,716 m • Trekking with local herders and experience the original Bhutanese villages

The Dagala Thousand Lakes trek takes place in the area to the south of the Bhutanese capital of Thimphu, and the trailhead starts just to the south of the city, at the village of Geynizampa. Rated as a medium level trek in terms of difficulty, the trek is one that is somewhat strenuous, and while not really recommended for the novice trekker, with an average level of physical fitness, it is possible for even a beginner to complete the trek.

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

The trek does not actually have a thousand lakes, though there are a huge number of small pristine lakes along the route, many of which you can visit. The lakes are filled with fish, and when the days are clear, the rainbow trout can be seen swimming deep in the placid waters. The trek also gives you a great view of the mighty Himalayas Range to the north, including the stunning peaks of Jomolhari, Masanggang, Jichu Drake, and even Kanchenjunga on a clear day.

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek Maps

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek Route Map

What can we explore during the day-by-day trek?

Day 1: geynizampa (2,800 m) to gur (3,290 m) (5 hours/7 km/550 m ascent/210 m descent).

Starting at the small but beautiful village of Geynizampa, the trek starts with a descent to cross the river that flows along the valley floor, and then continues up the other side of the valley, climbing to the huge platform of rock that gives a great view over the valley, all the way to the capital. From there, it is a two-hour hike along meadows and pasture land to Gur, a popular yak grazing pasture just below the trail.

Day 2: Gur (3,290 m) to Labatamba (4,300 m) (5 hours/12 km/1,220 m ascent/110 m descent)

The second day of the trek is a little harder, taking you along some of the high ridges of the area, through the rugged yet beautiful countryside and virgin forests . The day’s route takes you over a high mountain pass, which is marked by a large cairn of rocks, is one of the best places in the area to get a good view of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain at 8,586 meters above sea level. Once over the pass, you drop down into the Labatamba Valley on the other side, and then start the climb up the other side of the valley to the campsite, next to the first of many lakes you will see on the trek, known as Uthso Tsho.

Day 3: Labatamba (4,300 m)

The third day of the trek will be set aside for resting from the strenuous treks to get to the lakes and is also an ideal opportunity to take a short trek to some of the other lakes in the area. There are three lakes nearby, Reli Tsho, Hen Tsho, and Jama Tsho. These stunning lakes are also a great place to get in some excellent trout fishing, as all of the lakes are stocked with rainbow trout, which can be fished with a local permit that we can acquire for you.

Day 4: Labatamba (4,300 m) to Pangkha (4,000 m) (6-7 hours/8 km/260 m ascent/520 m descent)

After your relaxing day of fishing, it is time to get back on the trail, and the day begins with a climb along the western side of Dala Tsho, up to the saddle of the ridge. From this high altitude ridge, you get to see some of the most stunning mountains in the world, and on a clear day, can see all the way across to Mount Everest in Nepal/Tibet. From the saddle, the trail descends to the Doccha Chhu Valley, passing by some of the local yak herder’s huts along the way. After a short trek following the river, you will reach the village of Pangkha, where you will camp for the night.

Day 5: Pangkha (4,000 m) - Talakha (4,180 m) (5-6 hours/8 km/720 m ascent/520 m descent)

While the day’s hiking will cross several passes between the mountains, there are none that are really hard today, and none require a steep climb. The area between Pangkha and Talakha is well known as a popular place for some of the mountain birds that reside in northwest Bhutan, and in the summer months, the fields are strewn with blue poppies. After crossing the final pass, you will start to descend to the valley and the Gompa at Talakha. Your campsite is right next to the monastery, and you will wake up to the Buddhist chants of the monks at prayer in the morning.

Day 6: Talakha (4,180 m) - Chamgang (2,820 m) (3 hours/6 km/1400 m descent)

The short walk from the monastery to the small village of Chamgang takes around three hours, following the service road for the monastery, which is little more than a dirt track. You can get a look around the monastery before you leave for the end of the trek at the village of Chamgang.

When is the best time to trek this route?

The highest point of the trek is at the rest stop at Labatamba, which lies at an altitude of 4,300 meters above sea level, which means that the trek is not as high as some treks in Bhutan, which have passed over 5,000 meters. The trek can, ideally, be done throughout the year, with the exception of the rainy season, from July to August.

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek in Spring

The best time of year to make the trek is in the spring and autumn, from April to June and from September to November . This is the time when the weather is at its best for trekking in Bhutan , with clear skies, very little rain, and with temperatures that are neither too hot nor too cold. The trek can be done in the winter months, from December to February, as the altitude is not too high and the weather is not too cold to trek, reaching lows of around -2 degrees in the coldest time of year.

Money that Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek costs

While treks in most countries can have a different cost, in Bhutan, there is a policy of the Minimum Daily Fee , which is regulated and set by the government for all tourists to the kingdom. All tours in Bhutan are set at a minimum cost of 250 US dollars per day in the peak season, and 200 US dollars per day in the low season. However, this is an all-inclusive cost, and there are no additional fees to pay for accommodation and such while you are in the kingdom. The cost of the tour always includes: • Accommodation on twin sharing basis in 3 star standard hotels • Three meals a day • English speaking guide • Visa arrangement • Government royalty and taxes • Transportation and sightseeing as per the itinerary • Museum visiting fees • Trekking equipment for trekkers, including tents, ponies for luggage, chef, etc. • Bottled drinking water throughout the trip

However, the Minimum Daily Fee does not cover your airfare into Bhutan, any personal expenses and laundry costs, gratuities for the guide and driver, internal domestic flights, and our own travel insurance.

What should we pack in advance before taking the trek in Bhutan?

What to pack for trekking in Bhutan largely depends on the season you are trekking in. From April to June and September to November, the weather is mild and even warm across most of the north of the country, and cold weather gear is not really necessary for most of the time. However, it can sometimes get a little chilly at night, so a warm sweater or jacket is useful once the sun goes down.

Packing for Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

Trekking in the summer months is a little different, as the rainy season in Bhutan runs from June to August. While warmer clothing is not really required, you may want to pack some wet weather gear, as it can get a little wet, even in the high mountains of the north.

The winter months are the hardest to pack for, as there is a need to ensure that you can stay warm during the trekking and once you stop for rests or for the night. The weather in the winter can drop to below freezing at night, though in some areas this is only just below freezing. Packing layers of clothing to stay warm is essential, as are thick socks to protect your feet from the cold and good Gore-Tex gloves .

Accommodations and Meals during this Trek

Accommodation during the trek is mainly camping in tents , as there are few lodges and guesthouses in Bhutan, unlike in Nepal, where lodges can be found along almost all the trails. Bhutan does not have a commercial guesthouse culture along with its trekking trails, as many of them are in remote areas and are in environmental regions of the kingdom that are protected from development.

All meals are included on the cost of the trekking tour, and will be catered for by cooks and staff that will accompany you along the trail to ensure you get good, nutritious meals throughout the entire trekking period.

Trekking in Bhutan is one of the most amazing experiences in the world, and is one of the few places left on the planet where you can get so close to nature without seeing other people or cars and large towns. The unique environment of the kingdom makes it one of the most spectacular trekking regions in the world, and much of the trekking occurs in areas that still have no roads and only a few ancient trails. Without a doubt, a trek in Bhutan along the Dagala Thousand Lakes trail is one of the most exciting adventures you could ever take.

Dagala Trek

Dagala Trek

Dagala thousand lake trek in bhutan.

duration

Trip Overview

A legion of trekkers has been drawn by the irresistible mystical charms of Bhutan’s mountains and its surreal, exquisite landscapes. The Dagala Trek in Bhutan is one such trek. In addition to its many small, beautiful lakes (hence also fondly called the “Thousand Lakes Trek”) and breathtaking vistas, it remains relatively unexplored with fewer trekkers.

Dagala trek follows a trail along the ridge-line of Dagala range, that separates Thimphu valley from the lower hills to the south with uninterrupted views in almost all direction. On a clear day, you can see not only the peaks of Bhutan, but could also see far off peaks of Sikkim and Nepal as well. With exposed ridge line, the weather can also change dramatically in a short period.

The trek begins from above the village of Genekha, situated on the slopes of a hill between Thimphu and Paro. As the trek progresses, it gradually unveils many of its treasures, such as beautiful alpine meadows, numerous small lakes, nomadic yak herders’ camps, varied forms of flora and fauna, and a soulfully pristine environment. Not only does it invigorate the spirit with its awe-inspiring landscapes and unspoiled environment, but it also provides an opportunity for a close encounter with nomadic yak herders.

This trail now used only by nomadic Yak Herders and few trekkers, was once an important trade route connecting Thimphu with Dagana in south. This trek may test your physical conditioning with steep climbs in some parts. However, aside from a significant altitude gain on the second day of the trek, it is generally considered to be a moderate to easy level of difficulty. With an exposed ridge line, the weather can also change dramatically in a short period along the trail. However, the advantage of this route is that you can rapidly descend to lower altitudes in a short amount of time. In the spring, the forest along the lower ridges is ablaze with rhododendron blooms, and during the summer, the alpine meadows come alive with a technicolor array of wildflowers. With the opportunity to meet the nomads and learn about their lifestyle, as well as the breathtaking views throughout, the Dagala trek is truly exceptional.

Outline Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Paro Day 2: Paro -Punakha Day 3: In Punakha & Wangdue Day 4: Thimphu Day 5: Begin trek Gyenkha to Gur Day 6: Gur- Lambatama Day 7: In Lambatama Day 8: Labatama- Panka Day 9: Pankha- Talakha-Chamgang – trek end and drive to Paro Day 10: In Paro (Day hike to Taktsang) Day 11: Departure

Since most of the treks in Bhutan are at high altitudes, some form of physical conditioning and training beforehand will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the trek. Trekking itineraries are typically designed with a few days of cultural activities planned and included. These not only provide rewarding insights into the social, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of Bhutan but also aid in acclimatization. We have also incorporated some excellent day hikes into our itinerary, which will help set the tone for your upcoming trek.

Scenic high altitude trek with access to glacial lakes, breathtaking vistas, alpine meadows and verdant forests. Opportunity to meet nomadic cattle herders, Yaks, some wildlife, birds and opportunity for fishing

This evening we hope to visit Rinphung Dzong and others as per available time. Overnight in hotel at Paro.

In the evening stroll around Paro town with option for farewell dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight in hotel.

Typically, the final day in Bhutan is reserved for the hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery. If you're interested, instead of retracing your steps on the same path, you have the option to continue hiking along an old pilgrimage trail. This trail leads to the Zangdopelri Temple and Ugyen Tsemo. You can return using a different route, providing a unique and varied experience.

Transfer to Airport on time for your outbound journey. If your flight departs late, we can utilize the morning for more sightseeing in Paro valley.

Dear Anand,

Thank you for checking in with me about the trip.  I have been meaning to write reviews for Tripadvisor, but there is so much in my mind I haven’t been able to get it done yet.

The trip was a peak experience of my life.  My daughters (plus one boyfriend) and I loved it.  Namgyel was an exceptionally good guide and he took great care of us every day.  The trekking staff was excellent, especially the food service.  The tents were very good in spite of difficult weather most days.  I think the itinerary Windhorse prepared was perfect for our time there.  We were very happy with Gangtey Palace and Hotel Druk.  Namgyel was very knowledgeable an open to answering our many questions.

On the trek we had quite a bit of rain, so it wasn’t as scenic as it might have been.  However, the packing list from the Windhorse web site ensured we were well equipped to deal with all of the different weather conditions we experienced.  Our camping was comfortable in spite of the weather.  The trek itself was more physically challenging than I had anticipated due to the altitude, but Namgyel was very good at maintaining a pace I (the oldest and least fit) could manage.  When the rain did break the scenery was magnificent.  On day 3 I did ask Namgyel to shorten the lake excursion due to the rain.  He found a hut where we had a dry and comfortable lunch.  We took some free time in the afternoon and my daughter composed a song which she sang for the yaks.

On the day after the trek we chose to take the horses to see Tiger’s Nest and to skip the climb to the temple as we were pretty worn out from the trek.

Sonam, our driver, was safe and attentive.

I particularly appreciated the quick responses to all my questions in advance of the trip.  And I definitely appreciated the itinerary recommendation which got us away from tourist crowds.  We only saw one other group on the entire trek (they had aborted due to weather and were returning to the start point).  It was clear to me that the Windhorse staff takes maintaining the environment very seriously.  I appreciate that.

Trying to think of constructive suggestions, only two very minor points come to mind.  I wish there would have been a way to confirm seats on DrukAir ahead of check in at the airport.  We were not able to sit together or get the preferred side of the airplane on the Delhi-Paro route.  The other is that, because we arrived on a Sunday, I couldn’t exchange currency (but Namgyel found an ATM).  The only problem with that was that I was never able to exchange before the trek, so had to tip the trekking staff in USD which I imagine was less convenient for them.

I will definitely recommend Windhorse (and Bhutan) to others.

Pema Namgay

From the outset, Pema Namgyal knew what he wanted to do in life. He love to keep things simple. Right after finishing his Class 12 from school in Thimphu in 2004, he joined guiding course to aspire to be a guide. Initially he started as cultural guide but with time, he felt more connected with wilderness, he did course for trek in 2008.

After a fruitful experiences with other companies, he joined Wind Horse Tours in 2010. He has led many treks, and I seriously doubt, if there are any tourist trails that he hasn’t tread upon. One trek that stand out is challenging Snowman Trek, he comes highly recommended for this. In October, 2014 he successfully completed Snowman trek with 4 guests.

Pema Loves and he is good in archery and he has a loving family with two children

Guide – Culture, Trek & Nature

Growth in Tourism in Bhutan has also its share of impact on young minds. With tourists freely moving around, the curiosities to know them, talk to them holds ground firmly on young minds . Namgay is one among many youth whose imagination was captured by razzmatazz of tourism.

He has his career goal  cut out, he could have easily opted for some comfortable desk jobs, after passing out in flying colours from prestigious St Joseph college Darjeeling in 2010 but he chose to pursue his dream, he loved to be in field, among the guests, so it was only matter of time to enroll for guiding course.

His first foray into job was in 2013 at Wind Horse Tours and still he is going great guns. Feed Backs from guests that he led are great testimonial to his dedication.

He prodigiously read books that open up new frontiers and interaction with guests coupled with sound command of English takes his outlook towards learning and experiences altogether to different height.

Yonten Phuntsho

Yonten Phuntsho is one of our senior most guide. And well versed on his business. Initially, he conceded an impression of a man of a few words but I was in for surprise with the knowledge of his job, great sense of humour and congenial personality- simply one cannot judge a book by its cover.  His unwavering focus, dedication, knowledge and passion runs deep for the love of his works. His aptly quote Barbara Kingsolver “I do my best work if I think about what it is I have to offer”.

From the outset, he knew what he wants to do in his life. Right after finishing his Class 12, he enrolled for guide course for culture initially then extended few more month to complete course on Trekking as well in 2008. After doing free lancing for a while, he joined Wind Horse Tours in 2010.

For most Bhutanese, appeals that mountainous terrains throw in for an out door adventures are native. In the case of Yonten, it was no exception. He easily gave in to the temptation of Mountain biking with its advent. He explored and lead tours in his bike but his allegiance is more inclined to off road biking trips that leads to quaint villages. To explore the unknown and love for nature, these attributes  that he cultivated while trekking the alpine highlands and wilderness in remote corner of country was what prompt him to readily agree to embark on audacious Haa to Phuentsholing on mountain bike, overcoming challenges of carrying bike in tough terrains, untamed vegetations and unexplored areas.

About Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

The incredible 12-day Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek in Bhutan takes you deep into the Himalayan foothills, across dotted gorgeous Bhutanese villages to a place where a plethora of crystal clear lakes glisten in the sunlight. The Dagala Thousand Lakes Walk, located between Thimphu and Paro, is one of Bhutan's most renowned hiking trails, offering a rare opportunity to experience some of the most spectacular high slopes of the Bhutanese Himalayas in a short timeframe. Bhutan is known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, and with its pristine nature and eco-friendly tourism policies, this is one journey you won't want to miss while visiting this last remaining Himalayan Kingdom.

Your trek begins in the town of Geynizampa, just south of Thimpu's capital city. The trek is rated as a medium-level trek in terms of difficulty, and while it is not suggested for the newbie trekker, it is possible for even a beginner to complete the trek with an average degree of physical fitness.

The trek does not feature a thousand lakes, but there are numerous small lakes en-route, many of which you can actually visit. The lakes are teeming with fish, and on clear days, rainbow trout may be seen swimming deep in the calm waters. On a clear day, one can see the majestic Himalayas Range to the north, including the stunning peaks of Jomolhari, Masanggang, Jichu Drake, Kanchenjunga, and even Mt Everest!

Weaving through tiny streams, you will climb gently through scattered birches and rhododendrons to arrive at Pagalabtsa pass (4170 m) marked by huge cairns.

From the pass, you will have spectacular views of Kanchenjunga (Sikkim) and most of the Bhutanese Himalayan peaks. Descending from the pass one will view whole Dagala range meadows and yak herders camp. Lunch at nearby yak herder’s camp.

You will be accompanied by your own trekking staff consisting of a professional trekking guide, cook, camping assistant and a few horsemen and horses to carry your gear; regardless of whether you’re a solo trekker or you are a part of a bigger group. All food supplies must be carried in and prepared in camp. Trekking in Bhutan can therefore be a little expensive for solo travelers and those traveling in smaller groups.

A TYPICAL DAY ON THE TREK :

The day starts off with a wake up call, around 6-6:30 am, if you are not already awake by then. A staff will come with a bowl of warm water to wash up along with tea/coffee brought to your tent. Before heading over to the dinning tent for breakfast, usually around 7-8, we suggest you pack your overnight gear into your duffel bag and prepare for the day. During breakfast the staff will pack away the tents and ready the horses.

After breakfast, usually between 8:30-9 am, we start walking.  The pace of the trek is leisurely with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos and explore the local settlements, if any. Lunch will be around noon at a favourable spot by the side of the trail. Lunch is carried by the staff.

There is usually more walking after lunch, we will always plan to cover big ascents/passes before lunch but this does not always pan out as expected. Normally we will get into camp by mid afternoon with the tents already set up by the support team. Once you arrive at camp, you will be able to wash up, change to get into your comfy camp clothes and try and get comfortable.

Tea and snacks will be served. Followed by dinner later in the evening around 7pm.

All meals are freshly prepared by our cook and kitchen team. Breakfast with fried rice, toast/pancakes with various condiments, omelettes and a range of hot drinks. Hot lunch is prepared by the kitchen crew during breakfast and packed into containers carried by the staff to be eaten on the trail. On arrival at the campsite, there will be tea and other hot drinks in the dining tent with biscuits and snacks, help yourselves. Dinner will follow with soup, meal and dessert.

ACUTE MOUNTAIN SICKNESS (AMS).

This happens due to the body’s reaction to the low air pressure (less oxygen) at high altitudes and each individual responds to this situation differently. So please ascent at your own steady pace so that you allow your body to acclimate as you gain elevation.

This is a problem for some people, especially when hiking and sleeping above 3500 meters. The onset of symptoms has no logic in the sense that you never know who will get it regardless of your previous climbs and high ascents. There is no natural way to avoid getting AMS. However, acclimatization before the trek (we recommend day hikes, climbing high and sleeping low) and staying hydrated, eating and sleeping (rest) well on the trek goes a long to keeping yourself fit and feeling good.

Usually a steady and throbbing headache at the back of your head is a telltale sign of the onset of AMS. But this is not a major concern if it does not develop further and persists. Other symptoms include: fatigue, shortness of breathe, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping and vomiting. There is no treatment to this sickness other than letting the body rest, acclimate and cure itself. If the symptoms do not get better, we will descend in altitude.

PACKING LIST AND TIPS :

They say we pack our fears when we travel and thus all of us pack different and are each their own creatures of comfort. But the rule of thumb on treks is to keep it to the essentials and be organized.

Less things to pack in the morning means, being swift and at ease which translates to a few more cups of coffee while enjoying the morning sun.

Therefore only listing the essentials here.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • DAS BOOT : Your favourite hiking boot or shoe. One that is broken in and kept you on the trail, blister free, while hitting the gnarly stuff. A pair with good ankle support that breathes well and to a certain extent is water resistant, keeps your feet happy!
  • THE FART SACK : I mean the sleeping bag. Check where and when you are going and take something that is rated lower by 5ºC than the expected temperature, just be on the warmer and safer side. Women typical tend to sleep colder than men.
  • MATTRESS: A foldable and comfortable mat, ideally an inflatable mattress. After a long day, you just want some good sleep. One that can be packed away inside your duffle bag or secured on the outside with the straps (easier for us to stow away and load it onto the horses). We will provide a footprint foam mat.
  • DAY PACK : Just like your boots, a backpack is something you wear almost throughout the day and the entirety of your trek. So take a pack that you are comfortable with. A 20-30 L pack is ideal, depending on the gear you carrying.
  • CLOTHING : Apart from the clothes you are comfortable with, a rain jacket or a poncho that can double up as a windbreaker, is indispensable. Micro climates in the mountains are an enigma. So its always nice to be prepared, that way the rain doesn’t feel so bad and you can slog on with a grin on your face. Another essential is a down jacket, to throw over yourself while at camp after the sun goes down.
  • MEDICATION : Please don’t forget you personal medication . Also a small personal first aid kit. You may never need them, but it can prove to be crucial for your wellbeing incase you do while on the trail. We will also have a common first aid with only the essential medicine and kit.
  • HEADLAMPS/TORCH:
  • GLOVES & BEANIES
  • SUNSCREEN, SUN GLASSES AND HAT
  • WATER BOTTLES
  • A PACKABLE PILLOW

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek Map Routes

Introduction

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek  is for mountain lovers and this blog is dedicated to them.

A Bhutanese oral saying, even the Nomads who are raised in Dagala pasture just can’t master this trek route. The reason is that, myriads of paths lead to these valleys and if you lose the path you will be lost in the maze. However you will be accompanied by Trekking guide so there is nothing to worry.

It offers  the most beautiful views of the world’s highest mountain including Mount Everest , Mount Kanchenjunga and other Eastern Himalayas. The trek route was used by Daga Penlop in the olden time to visit Punakha . Punakha was then the capital of Bhutan. It is one of the most Scenic Trekking in Bhutan.

Scenic Bhutan Trek

Most people claim that this trek is an easy trek, but ironically it is a high altitude trek and requires a lot of stamina. The campsite ranges from 3200 meters to 4200 meter. As you move through this trek you have to cross many passes above 4000 meters. However the view of crystal clear lakes and Eastern Himalayas is simply of another world.

The trail also takes you through several Bhutanese villages , so you can get a good idea of the traditional Bhutanese lifestyle.

Starting point, day 1: genekha village to gur.

Distance 7Km, Time 5 hours, Ascent 550m, Descent 60m, Camp Elev 3290m.

The Trek starts from the most beautiful village of Genekha ( 2750 meters) . The starting point of the trek is a susspension bridge at the foot of Genekha village.

Genekha Village the Starting Point of Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

From here, we  follow the ancient trails followed by  Daga Penlop and his retinue in olden time.  We have to walk through the evergreen  forest of Blue Pine and Conifer till we reach the subalpine Zone,  called Gur, situated at an altitude of 3200m. We can have our campsite set at Gur Valley. There is a beautiful  forest below the Gur campsite . It is famous for the most expensive mushroom known as Masutake . If you are up to some adventure then we can  hunt for Matsutake mushrooms in the evening.

However you can also have the option to  camp at Watasachen instead of Gur, if the altitude is not a problem for you. Watasachen  is at an altitude of 4150m.

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

From Gur you need to cross a pass known as Pagalaptsha (4250m) to camp at Watasachen . The Pagalaptsha Pass  offers the beautiful views of Mount Kanchenjunga (8586m), Mount Everest, Jomolhari(7314m), Jichu Drakey (6989m), Tiger Mountain (6840m) and Tsheringmeigang .

Once at the Camp at Watasachen,  you can explore the village and lifestyle  of nomads of Dagala.  Though they live above 4000 meters, they stay clean, perhaps the cleanest nomads in Bhutan. Thanks to the support from UNDP for helping the Nomads with clean toilets, metal roof, solar panel and Gas Stove for cooking.

From the village of Nomads, if you hike another 20 to 30 minutes you can get a stunning view of N ychen Dongkola ,Kanchenjunga and the Phodrang/Palace of Aum Jumo of Dagala.

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

Day 2 : Gur to Labatama- Taju (Explore Lakes and hike to Taju)

The next day we can explore the Lakes (Tsho)  of Aum Jumo . Aum Jomo is the deity of Jomolhari  Mountain . The Lakes like, Yue – Tsho, Tsha-tsho, Thro Tsho, Bay Tsho, Dagay tsho, Bjagay Tsho, Jumo Latsho, Ser tsho,  is called as the procession of Aum Jumo . You may visit the meditation cave  in the small island of Bjaytsho Lake and feel the presence of divine mystic.

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

You can also check out the ruins of Daga Penlop Auchu Tshering’s at Labatama  known as Dophu Tshawa in between two small streams.

After checking on the ruins and beautiful lakes we will head towards  Taju La

We will stop for Lunch at Taju la at 4350 meters. There is a story of how the name Taju La came about which means ‘Horse Race Pass”

Daga Penlop  Auchu Tshering married a Girl who indeed was a manifestation of Aum Jumo. Two of them used to love watching the horse race . So at Taju la, they used to make their subjects compete in horse races. Ta- Horse Ju- Race and La- pass; this is how the name came about.

Dagal Thousand Lakes Trek

The campsite will be just below the Taju la pass from where we can get the magnificent views of Jomolhari, Mount Kanchenjunga and  Jichu Drake, Tsheringmeigang. The beauty of these mountains is further enhanced during sunset.

Campsite at Taju (Little Further From Labatama)

Scenic Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

Day 3 ( Labatama/Taju to Pangkha )

After having a good breakfast, we can ascend to another pass known as Labagay. It is the highest point on this Trek  at 4450 meters.

From this pass if you climb another 100 meters up then you will be able to see Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga,  Mount Lhotshe and the last Himalayas in Bhutan including Gangkhar Punsum at the far end.

Dagala Trek Bhutan

Here we can really coexist with the sky, Mountains, Lakes and rivers. One can get the feeling of being on the top of the world.

After crossing the Labagay pass, we slowly descend down on the stony path that had been used by Daga Penlops while going to Punakha. This is the historic route which passes by the lake known as Dungkhar Tsho . The last lake on the Trek.

We also come across a very beautiful Nomad pasture  known as Laba Chung with the Yaks grazing.

If you happen to come in spring, this place looks like a Botanical Garden. The walk through the shrubs of Rhododendrons Anogosium will lead you to the bridge. After crossing the bridge, we will ascend slowly towards Pangka Camp 4000 meters. The walk is so lovely that people forget to walk at their own pace as they fall in love with flowers. Once, one of my friends told me, we have to be like Flowers,  they never try to compare their beauty with one another.

Pangka is one of the most beautiful campsites in this Dagala Trek . From here we can have a good View of the mountain starting from Sikkim to the Last Himalayas.

If you like we can take a day off and immerse ourselves in the scenic beauty of the Mountain.

Camping Site at Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

Day 4 : Pangka via Talakha to Thimphu

14KM | 8 HOURS | 180M ASCENT | 1540M DESCENT

After a good breakfast we will take a walk from Pangka campsite. The walk  gradually ascends to the nameless pass with the best views of the Himalayas. Then descends down to a place known as Zorina and further  ascends to the Chari la Pass ( RainCoat Pass 4200 meters) . Chari la is a beautiful pass, from where you will be able to see the whole mountains of the world. You can also see many species of mountain birds on this trek.

If we are here in the right season, we may see the Blue Poppies and Yellow Poppies on the way up.

In olden times it is said that the strongest Soldier of Daga Penlop had to carry the stone from  Zorina to Chari la. So as to prove their worth.

Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

The walk gradually descends towards another Nomadic place known as Kherkewa.

And from here we slowly ascend and descend to Gechula at 3850 meters and head towards Jeley Zey.

Ending Point of Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek  in Bhutan

Once on top of Jeley Zey, you will not want to descend down. The sunrise and sunset will be the most beautiful from this point.

Slowly we will descend down to Pangserbu. We bid goodbye to Mount Kanchenjunga, who has been like a guiding star from the starting day of the Trek.

The walk down hill is more enjoyable. We  have to walk through the forest of Dead Trees and the Conifer Forest. At the end of the forest , we will bypass a logging farm road and then enter into a forest of pine trees.

Then slowly you will be Greeted by the small monks who are getting trained at 3000 meters under the strict Guidance of their respectable Teachers.

After making a visit to the Talakha Monastery,  and thanking the Guidance Deity ( Tshangkhap Jeley, for taking care of you and your teams and after getting a blessing from the old Kanjure printed from on Daphne plant,  we bid an Adieu to the Trek of 1000 lakes, sometimes knowns as Walking in the steps of Daga Penlop.

Legion of trekkers have been drawn by the irresistible mystical charms of Bhutan’s mountains and its surreal exquisite landscapes. Dagala Trek Bhutan is one such trek, where in addition to its many small beautiful lakes (therefore also called thousand lakes trek) and its beautiful vistas, it is a one with fewer trekkers. The trek begins from above a village of Genekha, located on the slopes of a hill, between Thimphu and Paro. As the trek progresses, it gradually reveals many of its treasures in form of beautiful alpine meadows, many small lakes, nomadic yak herders camp, varied forms of flora and fauna, soulful pristine environment. Not only does it revved up the spirit with its awe-inspiring landscapes and pristine environment but also allows a close encounter with nomadic yak herders. This trail now used only by nomadic Yak Herders and few trekkers, was once an important trade route connecting Thimphu with Dagana in south. This trek may challenge your physical conditioning with steep climb in some parts, but apart from a high altitude gain within second day of the trek, it is considered moderate to easy type of trek. With exposed ridge line, the weather can also change dramatically in a short period on the trail. However, the good thing about this trail is that you can quickly descend to lower altitudes. In the spring, the forest along the lower ridges ablaze with rhododendron, and in the summer, the alpine meadows come alive with technicolor bloom of wild flowers. With opportunity to meet the nomads and learn about their lifestyle, and great views all along, Dagala trek is exceptional.

On your adventure in Bhutan, diet is the most essential factor to keep you healthy, strong and get you going on your trek. Though we would be providing you with varieties of Bhutanese, Indian, Chinese and Continental dishes with some fresh fruits, but in order to provide you with the right kind of your choice could you kindly let us know your preference and also if you have any restriction on diet.  Do you have any preference for breakfast too?

Things to Consider:

  • Pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing, hiking boots and medications in your carry-on baggage in case your luggage is delayed.
  • Make sure boots are broken-in. Bring moleskin or Blister Block for foot treatment. Thin liner socks worn under regular hiking socks may minimize the risk of blisters. The liner sock should be synthetic, not cotton. Test your sock combination before you go on the trip.
  • Cotton is wonderful in warm weather. However, once it becomes wet it will drain your body heat. Bring wool or synthetics such as Capilene, MTS and Thermax.
  • Bring a small ditty bag that includes a Ziploc bag with toilet tissue, spare Ziploc bags to dispose of soiled tissue, a small bottle of hand sanitizer and/or wet wipes. There are no reliable feminine health supplies available in Bhutan; women are advised to bring these from home. Your ditty bag will be carried in your daypack throughout the trip, including while sightseeing.
  • Gaiters are useful for keeping mud, debris, and snow out of your boots. Ankle to mid-calf length is ideal.
  • Stuff sacks are great for sorting gear. Use different sizes/colors to differentiate contents.

Bhutan is a developing country and modern faculties are centralized in the main city only. Normally in the mountain there is no good medical check post. The traditional village people still believe in wish doctors and herbal medicine as it was practice for long. Therefore we provide you basic medical kits which will certainly be helpful incase of emergency. Mostly these medical are to give you an orientation while you are going in high mountain. We always recommend bringing your own medical kits. Make sure that your personal allergy or etc should be carried by yourself.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS

Acute mountain sickness is an illness that can affect mountain climbers, hikers, skiers, or travellers at high altitude (typically above 8,000 feet or 2,400 meters). Acute mountain sickness is due to a combination of reduced air pressure and lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. The faster you climb to a high altitude, the more likely you will get acute mountain sickness. Your symptoms will also depend on the speed of your climb and how hard you push (exert) yourself. You are at higher risk for acute mountain sickness if:

  • You live at or near sea level
  • You had the illness before

Symptoms Symptoms generally associated with mild to moderate acute mountain sickness include:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid pulse (heart rate)
  • Shortness of breath with exertion

Symptoms generally associated with more severe acute mountain sickness include:

  • Bluish discoloration of the skin (cyanosis)
  • Chest tightness or congestion
  • Coughing up blood
  • Decreased consciousness or withdrawal from social interaction
  • Gray or pale complexion
  • Inability to walk in a straight line, or to walk at all
  • Shortness of breath at rest

Signs and tests Listening to the chest with a stethoscope (auscultation) reveals sounds called crackles (rales) in the lung, which may be a sign of fluid in the lungs. A chest x-ray may be performed. Treatment Early diagnosis is important. Acute mountain sickness is easier to treat in the early stages. The main treatment for all forms of mountain sickness is to climb down (descend) to a lower altitude as rapidly and safely as possible. You should not continue climbing if you develop symptoms.

  • Extra oxygen should be given, if available.
  • People with severe mountain sickness may need to be admitted to a hospital.
  • Acetazolamide (Diamox) may be given to help improve breathing and reduce mild symptoms. This drug can cause increased urination. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol when taking this drug.

If you have fluid in your lungs (pulmonary edema), treatment may include:

  • A high blood pressure medicine called nifedipine
  • A type of drug called a phosphodiesterase inhibitor (such as sildenafil)
  • Lung inhalers beta agonists
  • A breathing machine, in severe cases

Dexamethasone (Decadron) may help reduce swelling in the brain (cerebral edema). Portable hyperbaric chambers allow hikers to simulate conditions at lower altitudes without actually moving from their location on the mountain. These devices are very helpful if bad weather or other factors make climbing down the mountain impossible. Expectations (prognosis) Most cases are mild, and symptoms improve promptly when you climb down the mountain to a lower altitude. Prevention Keys to preventing acute mountain sickness include:

  • Climb the mountain gradually
  • Stop for a day or two of rest for every 2,000 feet (600 meters) above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters)
  • Sleep at a lower altitude when possible
  • Learn how to recognize early symptoms of mountain sickness
  • If you are traveling above 9,840 feet (3,000 meters), you should carry enough oxygen for several days.
  • If you plan on quickly climbing to a high altitude, ask your doctor about a medication called acetazolamide (Diamox). This drug helps your body get used to higher altitudes more quickly, and reduces minor symptoms. It should be taken the day before you climb, and then for the next 1 to 2 days.

If you are at risk for anemia, ask your doctor if an iron supplement is right for you. Anemia lowers the amount of oxygen in your blood. While climbing:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Eat regular meals, high in carbohydrates
  • You should avoid high altitudes if you have heart or lung disease.

Customer reviews

I and a group of friends did a 6 day trek through the Dagala valley (officially the trek is called the 1000 lake trek). The trek was very well organized, facilities were excellent, good food, very helpful and polite team and overall great execution. I have done more than 6 treks in 3 countries and Pema was easily one of the best guides I have had. Great arrangements when we were in Thimphu & Paro pre and post trek as well. Would not hesitate to recommend Karma & his team for a visit to Bhutan.

I had the most wonderful experience trekking through the ranges of Chandrashila with Trekmunk. The small moments of achievement were phenomenal. Chandrashila is the most astonishing peak that I've ever trekked through; I've never been so fascinated. I think I am going to go for another trek with Trekmunk soon enough! The kind of hospitality that is provided to us is worth appreciating. I made many new friends and have enjoyed each and every day of this trek to its fullest.

We were a group of 12 friends and booked a trek to Kedartal with Trekmunk, it was an amazing experience..even though it was our first trek to the Himalayas and Kedartal being a difficult terrain trek we were guided excellently by the Trekmunk team. They served us nutritious food, took complete care of our safety and health and gave us the right advice to overcome AMS. Eagerly awaiting our next trek with them.

No words for the bike trip from Srinagar to Leh. One should experience it to feel it and all this because of the management of Trekmunk especially Mohit and Harshit whose efforts even made the hardest of the ride exciting adventurous and above all safe. Although some hindrances which are quite common like bike issues and medical problems arose with our co-riders, I liked the way these two guys handled it dexterously. I went with one of my best friends and came with a lot more and the trip turned out to be memories that can be cherished for a lifetime. Thanks, Team Trekmunk for giving me a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go on my next adventure with them.

Traveling with these people is surely an insanely enthralling experience. This is my second backpacking trip with these people and the way I had imagined backpacking to be has been fulfilled by them and they have given me surely more. The best thing about travelling with these people is that you understand the true meaning of travelling and experience it very closely. You are given great freedom but at the same time taking care of. You participate in the process of backpacking. You have a trip leader with you but he acts more like a friend as the days pass by! We attended the hornbill festival and did a wonderful trek to Dzukuo valley in Nagaland with the leadership of this group. You break the boundaries of yourself when you travel like a true traveller and that is possible with these people.

If alterations are necessary the leader will decide the best alternative option, taking into consideration the best interests of the whole group. Where a change does occur, we do everything we can to minimize its effect, but we cannot be responsible for the results of changes or delays.

Dagala Trek

Customize Your Trip

The Dagala Trek, also known as the Thousand Lake Trek, is a 50 km trek in the Thimphu district of Bhutan. The trail starts at Genekha and ends at Chamgang, and includes four passes, one of which is over 4,500 meters. The trek is considered moderate, with the highest altitude at 4,300 meters.

The Dagala Trek follows the ridgeline of the Dagala range, which separates the Thimphu valley from the lower hills to the south. On a clear day, you can see the peaks of Bhutan, Sikkim, and Nepal. The trek also includes a tour of Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro.

Upon arrival at Paro airport, you will be received by our guide and representative, and will escort you to the hotel. In the afternoon your series of visits begin with an errand to Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, which now is the National Museum. Below the museum is the Paro Rinpung Dzong, the centre of civil and religious authority in this valley. It is believed that this fortress is built on the heap of jewels in 15 th  century.

A short walk takes you to the base of the dzong and across a traditional cantilevered, covered bridge. In the evening start sorting and packing your trekking equipment for the trek you will start tomorrow.

Drive towards the road point to Taktsang. Taktsang is the place most visited by both the tourists and Bhutanese. Taktsang Monastery, the most famous of Bhutan’s monasteries is perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the Paro valley floor. Taktsang means “Tiger’s Nest,” so named because Guru Rinpoche reportedly flew to the site of the monastery on the back of a flying tigress.  This day hike is not only historically and culturally interesting, but also incredibly scenic! It takes about one and half hour to reach the cafeteria, which gives a breathtaking view of the Tiger’s Nest. If you still feel like hiking then you can take another hour to reach the temple. Then return back to the cafeteria for your lunch and then walk down hill after your lunch. You will be driven back to the hotel from the base camp.

Distance 7Km, Time 5 hours, Camp Eleve 3290m.

Today, we will drive to Thimphu (Genekha 2800M) which is the starting point of our trekking. Today’s trail is all through terraced fields and conifers vegetation. Trek starts with a short descent down to the river, from here, after crossing the river, you start climbing till you reach a huge rock platform at 3350m from where you will have a picturesque view of the valley below. After another 2 hours, you reach Gur amid yak pastures at 3290m.

Distance 12Km, Time 6 hours, Camp Elev 4100m.

While trekking across the ridges, one enjoys beauty of the rugged mountains vegetation. The path winds through flowers and wild asparagus (in spring). The meadows are refreshing and inspiring. The first pass symbolize by a huge cairn gives a spectacular view of Kanchenjunga (Sikkim) and more or less all the Bhutanese Himalayan peaks. Once descended into the Lamatama valley, you will ascend gradually through the valley passing some yak herder huts till you reach Utsho Lake where golden trouts are in abundance. The campsite is right next to the lake at 4100.

Distance 8Km, Time 5-6 hours, Camp Elev 400m.

The trail continues along the western side of the Dalatsho up to a saddle at 4520m from where you can have majestic view of Himalayan peaks during descent. This point is around 4460m. The mountain peaks include Everest (Nepal), Kanchenjunga (Sikkim), Jumolhari, Jitchu Drake, Tshering Gang, Khangbum, Masa Gang , Tshenda Gang and Gangche Ta. If you want even better view, you can climb a peak close to the saddle with an altitude of 4720m. From the saddle the path descends, passing some yak herder huts (you can interact with them to know their livelihood) to Docha Chu. You follow the river for a while, but stay higher up on the slop to reach Pankha with some ups and down on the way. Camp at Pankha is about 4000m.

Distance 14Km, Time 8 hours,

You will start early today. This day entails the crossing of several passes, each one more impressive than the other. Search for different varieties of plants and mountain birds. After crossing the last small ridge, you will gradually decent toward the main Junction pass, which crisscrossed each other for the trail towards Chamgang, Talekha, Ganekha and Gaselo. So just make a very short descent on your right, and then take left horizontally for few minutes towards Chamgang trail with about three to four small ridges to go up and down before you begin a steep downhill hike until you reach a Chamgang village. You will finally arrive at the motor able road where transport will be awaiting to transfer you to Thimphu.
