“Grass Rootes” Known as the oldest commercial building in Culpeper, VA, now known as a local restaurant by the name of Grass Rootes, this property is carries behind it a profound history. Over the years and during it’s time, the property was used for a variety different businesses, as well as a Jail for both the Union and Confederacy during the 1800s. Many local workers and county residents today share personal experiences and stories that leave us to believe that it’s possible that spirits from this locations past still roam throughout the building today.

Graffiti House

Brandy Station, VA/ Culpeper – Located within the Brandy Station area, where one of history’s greatest Calvary engagements occurred, is the Graffiti House. Once served as a field hospital, it was also the headquarters facility for the Federal forces during the winter encampment of 1863-1864. Soldiers from that time period made drawings and wrote their names/unit on the walls of house. Presently, they are being preserved and can still be seen today. After several investigations it is thought that several Civil War soldiers still haunt this historic location.

Fun for all ages, the tour will showcase both traditional and unique farms in the beautiful Blue Ridge foothills that make up Culpeper County. The event provides a wonderful educational experience and includes an array of hands-on activities and demonstrations. The 15 carefully selected farms and ag-related businesses on the tour reflect Culpeper’s agricultural heritage and the millions of dollars in production, wages and salaries generated by the agricultural industry in our county and state.

Culpeper’s Fall Farmer’s Market

Visitors can find seasonal, local, farm fresh produce, pumpkins, mums and more at the Fall Farmers Market in Culpeper. Located in the parking lot at the Culpeper Baptist Church you can stop by anytime between 7:30am – 12pm every Saturday through October to see what new seasonal items are available to sample, explore and purchase.

Culpeper, VA is a charming historic town located about halfway between Washington, D.C. and Charlottesville in Central Virginia. The town dates all the way back to 1749. 

It’s home to a number of great wineries, breweries, distilleries, farms, antique shops, and historic sites, which means you’ll find plenty of things to do in Culpeper for a weekend getaway. 

The historic district is centered around Main Street and it’s very walkable. You’ll find Burgandine House, the Culpeper Visitors Center, and the Culpeper Museum all within a few blocks of each other.

Getting to culpeper.

Culpeper is located in Central Virginia. It’s about 55 miles southwest of Northern Virginia, 46 miles northeast of Charlottesville, and 35 miles west of Fredericksburg.

You can travel to Culpeper by either car or train. From Northern Virginia, you can take Route 15, and from Charlottesville, you’ll take Route 29. Both major routes lead right to Culpeper. From Fredericksburg, you can take VA-3 West.

Amtrak also has a train station right in historic downtown Culpeper, with two stops a day.

Historic Downtown 

Along with many of the museums, breweries, and historic sites on this list, historic downtown is also the site of many beautiful, ornate Victorian Homes, particularly if you walk down South East Street.

You’ll instantly feel as though you’ve been transported through time as you walk down the sidewalk past these gorgeous colorfully decorated homes. 

Some of the major places to check out are Wisteria, which dates back to 1885, and Fountain Hall, which is a charming bed and breakfast. 

Culpeper Visitor Center

Culpeper Visitor Center is located in the historic train depot, right by the Amtrak station, which makes it a convenient first stop for your trip to Culpeper.

It’s also located within walking distance of most of the historic downtown Culpeper attractions, including Beer Hound Brewery (located right next door), Burgandine House, and Far Gohn Brewing Company. 

The Museum Of Culpeper History

The Museum Of Culpeper History is located in the train depot, right alongside the Culpeper Visitor Center. 

Both sites are also located next to the Amtrak train station, which makes them incredibly convenient when traveling by train.

Historic A.P. Hill Boyhood Home

Historic A.P. Hill Boyhood Home features a five-bay via a seven-bay brick layout plan in the Tuscan Villa Style. It also has three stories. Seven bays were added to its depth soon before the American Civil War.

The townhouse was constructed by General Edward Stevebrs in the Revolutionary War and was purchased in 1832 by A. P. Hill.

An additional feature of the building in 1862 was a shop; the Hill Family sold off the property. The A.P. Boyhood Home is the abode for several commercial businesses.

The Andora Farm is the home of an outstanding horseman named Tom Seay. The Andora Farm holds the Cattle Drive Weekend from March to October, available to amateur and professional riders of all ages.

The Andora Farm is perched at the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills in colonial Virginia. The primary farmhouse was constructed around 1758 and was visited by George Washington at the time of the American Revolution. 

Daniel Boone resided and worked on the Andora Farm just a few yards from the farm site. He usually conveyed tobacco to ports that were close by, which were to be transported for sale to England.

The Andora Farm holds the Daniel Boone Days event, attended by mountain men, artists, hayrides, historians, and artisans to celebrate his legacy.

At the time of the Civil War, the property was occupied by Union Officers, and about 30,000 soldiers stayed on the farm and other surrounding farmlands. Exploring this Farm is one of the fun things to do in Culpeper, VA.

In the spring of 2016, Grass Rootes was opened to the general public to enjoy farm-to-fork dishes in an iconic ambiance that gives guests a welcome feel-at-home vibe.

Grass Rootes is situated in Culpeper’s oldest commercial structure and has a history stretching back to 1759 when George Washington was delegated to survey and plan the town of Culpeper.

North of Davis Street was designated the “Public Square.” It comprises the main Courthouse, stocks, whipping posts, plot 35, and colonial jail.

Since the construction of the building, it has had several establishments such as hardware stores, Tobacco warehouses, stables, Civil War Jails, tin shops, and stables.

The building has lived through a severe earthquake and two fires. It is presumed spiritually haunted by enslaved persons and warriors whose spirits are still tied to the wall of the building. 

The foods to eat here are handmade using freshly sourced ingredients. All of the items used in preparing their foods are obtained from farmers nearby.

Visit the Culpeper National Cemetery and pay respects to veterans. The Cemetery covered a landmass of six acres and was founded in 1867. The burial place in the later twentieth century has been expanded plenty of times.

An additional 22 acres of land were added to cater to the needs of our Fallen Heroes. Approximately 7,500 people have been laid to rest on this burial site.

There are different significant memorials to see when you visit the Cemetery. The Marines in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Massachusetts erected statues to commemorate the soldiers who died during the Battle of Cedar Mountain.

The Armed Forces Monument 1992 has been a popular destination for tourists. A monument was also built for unknown soldiers who fought in the Civil War in 1988. The National Military Monument was erected using a cast iron cannon tube.
