Hop off the beaten path for a new adventure.

Venture off the pavement into the quiet parts of Dogwood Canyon as we explore the habitat where Little Indian Creek and Table Rock Lake meet. Join us as we take to the stream in a leisurely wildlife kayaking tour, with opportunities to see Bald Eagle and Great Blue Heron nest sites. Together we will view an area of the park not commonly seen by visitors. Depending on water levels, this tour may include a short hike. Reservations required, not included with park admission.

Dogwood Canyon: Nature Lover’s Paradise in the Ozarks

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is a year-round 10,000-acre nature preserve set within a picturesque, mostly untouched canyon near Branson, MO.

Smooth trails wind through the grounds, passing trout streams, waterfalls, dense forest and pastures for the resident herds of bison, elk, whitetail deer and Texas longhorns. Visitors can explore on their own, or they can take guided tours via open-air tram, Segway or on horseback. Unpaved trails are for walking only.

Dogwood Canyon is a private park envisioned and established by Bass Pro Shops’ founder Johnny Morris. Driven by a deep commitment to protecting and preserving the natural environment, he acquired the first parcels of the property 1990. He later donated the land to the nonprofit Dogwood Canyon Foundation, which owns and manages the park.

As you might guess, Dogwood Canyon has lots of dogwood trees. The seasonal colors are spectacular. In spring, the dogwoods produce blooms in shades of white and pink and even a few rare reds. The oldest trees, more than 200 years, are sycamores. In the early days of logging here, no one wanted sycamores because the wood is soft, so they were left alone.

Our autumn visit began at the new main lodge, a massive timber-and-limestone building with a working grist mill and a museum of artifacts from the Osage Indians who once lived in these hills and hollows. Most notable is the towering skeleton of a stag-moose, a forerunner of the American bison that became extinct at the end of the Ice Age. A stag-moose could stand 8 feet at the shoulder and weigh 1,500 pounds.

The rustic but elegant Canyon Grill restaurant is lavished with natural building elements such as rough timbers, stone floors and leather seating. Beyond the massive windows is a dramatic 150-foot man-made waterfall.

The lodge was completed in 2016, which meant for the first time Dogwood Canyon could stay open year-round.

Another recent addition is the two-story treehouse built by Pete Nelson and the crew of Animal Planet’s hit TV show, “Treehouse Masters.”

After a delicious lunch of pan-fried trout, we headed for our tram tour. Kelly, our guide, kept up a steady patter as she pointed out points of interest.

She told us: A covered bridge was Amish-made with no power tools. The pine-log Hope Wilderness Chapel can host weddings for up to 60 people. We probably won’t see a black bear or a mountain lion, but eagle s regularly feast on the trout. The trout can weigh up to 20 pounds. We should watch for snakes. Bull snakes are non-venomous. Copperheads and rattlesnakes are venomous.

We pulled into a clearing, and the tram stopped. A dozen or so bison ambled toward us. Kelly reached for a large plastic container and spread kibble on the ground to attract them, so we could get up close and personal with our cameras.

We drove on a little further, and maybe three dozen elk trotted our way. There were mamas and babies and, if I’m counting correctly, a 10-point buck.

Deer and elk shed their antlers, which can weigh as much as 40 pounds, every year, Kelly told us.

She tossed kibble to the elk, and then to the longhorns further ahead.

“The animals know the trams bring food,” she said.

Our final stop was Wish Bowl Falls. It’s the turnaround point on the main trail. You’ll know you are there when you see the pool rich large golden rainbow trout. They are really, really yellow. Primary bright yellow. You can’t miss them. You won’t forget the wonder of it all.

This is embarrassing. When I think of the Ozarks, I think of Tennessee, not Missouri. Thanks for remedying this geographical lapse on my part. I did not realize that so much of the Ozark area is actually in Missouri. It must have been so frustrating to have to close because of flooding so soon after becoming a year round resort, but it does look like a lovely destination, probably especially in the fall and spring. I could do without the rattlers and copperheads–probably why I enjoyed hiking in New Zealand which doesn’t have any snakes. And who knew there’s kibble for bison. We live and we learn. 🙂

This is my place! I’d love to go on horseback and explore Dogwood Canyon. But I don’t want to meet the lion and the buffaloes to close with my horse 😉 I hope they will recover soon from the flooding.

Thank you for the note right at the start alerting us to potential closure. That is quite helpful and could save a lot of heartache and time. Dogwood Canyon looks like a wonderful place and I am looking forward to a visit.

It’s too bad they had to close (even temporarily) so soon after becoming a year-round rather than seasonal destination. I’m sure Dogwood Canyon will re-open better than ever.

Want an incredibly beautiful stroll through a park? Going to Dogwood Canyon with kids is incredibly easy, fun, relaxing, yet exciting.

Is Dogwood Canyon in Branson? No, not quite. You’ll need to drive about 30-40 minutes to get there. But visiting Dogwood Canyon while in Branson is a great idea and fun way to spend a day away.

Before arriving in Missouri, I hadn’t heard of Dogwood Canyon Nature Park. We stumbled across it in a quick search to find great places to hike nearby. Upon seeing gorgeous Dogwood Canyon photos of nature, waterfalls, and trails, we knew we needed to visit before we left town.

Dogwood Canyon is the perfect, most beautiful place to explore. It’s located about 35 minutes from Branson, making it a great day trip. If you are looking for a kid-friendly outdoor activity in Missouri, this is the place.

History of Dogwood Canyon

Johnny Morris, the founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops, has a love of nature. He has many projects he has completed to help people enjoy nature, all while helping to conserve it. One of those projects is Dogwood Canyon Nature Park.

The park is an area full of waterfalls, creeks, caves, trees, and animals that have been untouched. Dogwood Canyon has been created simply to allow the public to visit this beautiful part of Missouri. In its creation, accessible trails were added to allow both wheelchairs, strollers, and park vehicle tours to explore the area.

Dogwood Canyon was home to settlers in the 1800s, where you can still see cabins from then. Later, it was a place for mining lead and zinc.

The 1900’s brought park and recreation areas for RVs and fishing for a few years, followed by years of vacancy. In the 1990’s, Johnny Morris purchased over 2,000 acres of the land, which is now the main attraction area of Dogwood Canyon. Exploring the area brought discoveries, such as the oldest human burial remains in the state of Missouri.

After over 30 years of ownership, Johnny has helped to preserve and protect plants, land, and various animal species, who are thriving within the park today on over 10,000 acres.

What to Know About Dogwood Canyon Nature Park Before You Go

Thousands of visitors enjoy Dogwood Canyon every year. It has been improved in a way that makes it very easy for kids or guests with other specific needs to visit.

It is open from 9am to 5pm. Arrive early enough to allow a few hours to explore.

Upon arriving at Dogwood Canyon, you park your car at a close lot (if you’re early!) or at a parking lot around the way. There is good signage to lead you to the overflow lot.

Getting Tickets

Walk toward the big mill and you’ll find the ticket office. Keep in mind, this is not a state park or a national park. There is a solid entrance fee to be admitted. The prices are different depending on what day you go, but stay somewhere around $20 for an adult, single day ticket.

Tip: purchase tickets online ahead of time. You can select which day you go. This helps avoid arriving and finding out the tickets are sold out. We were lucky to have been early enough to walk in, but next time I’ll be purchasing tickets in advance.

Is Dogwood Canyon Kid-Friendly?

Yes! The trails that have been created through the park are paved and mostly flat. It is very easy to navigate through the park with kids.

The trail through Dogwood Canyon is about 3.5 miles one-way . If you are walking (which you have to do with the basic admission ticket), you can just walk as far as you’d like and then turn around . If the kids are younger, you can easily take a stroller through the park, perhaps allowing you to increase how far you can go.

There are beautiful scenes, fish, waterfalls, and stunning nature that will keep the kids happy and entertained. The park is easily appreciated by families and people of all ages.

The first thing you’ll come to is the big, running mill house. Inside are bathrooms, a little visitors area filled with taxidermies of native animals, and a restaurant. The mill house is a big, beautiful building.

If you purchased tickets in advanced, you could go around and skip the mill house, but I wouldn’t. The grandeur is enough to visit, but there is also a nature center upstairs the kids will enjoy.

If you walk all the way through the mill house and across the covered crossway, you’ll find a large gift shop.

The Treehouse at Dogwood Canyon

When you visit Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, you have to stop at the tree house! After you exit the mill house and just a short walk away, you’ll come to an enormous treehouse. This treehouse was built by Treehouse Masters from Animal planet, and it in impressive. Kids (or adults okay with small spaces) can start at the bottom and climb up a narrow way to the main level of the treehouse.

You could also just take some exterior stairs. Intricate details bring this treehouse alive. The stairs inside are beautifully carved, with natural stair rails. It has been decorated to replicate a little log cabin-feel inside. With stairs, ladders, climbing, and different rooms, the kids will love exploring the treehouse at Dogwood Canyon.

Trailside Restaurant

You may smell it before you see it. About a mile into your walk, you’ll stop at the Chuckwagon restaurant for those who have built an appetite. The grill area is a great stop for lunch, and serves bbq chicken/pork sandwiches, hotdogs, salads, etc. You can sit under a large, covered area to find some respite from the heat. There is also a restroom right across the way, making this an ideal stop with kids.

How to See Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

There are a few different ways to explore Dogwood Canyon with kids.

1- The most affordable way is to walk . Bring a stroller if you need to, and just leisurely stroll through the shade of the trees and along the creek. Walking makes it easy to stop where you’d like to take pictures or pull over and enjoy the majestic scenery for a bit. Plenty of people choose this option. And again, you can turn around at any point if it’s too long for the kids.

2- Bike . You can rent a bicycle at Dogwood Canyon (reserve in advance! They sell out.) For around $15, this can be an easier way to cover more ground. Make sure your child is old enough to both ride a bicycle and to navigate through crowds of people, if needed. Renting a bicycle is great because you can still get off an enjoy any place within the park.

3- Dogwood Canyon Tram Tour . Dogwood Canyon offers tram tours where all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. Hop into the vehicle and be taken to the ends of the park. A local told us that the only way to get to the bison and elk pastures are to take the tram tour, otherwise you have to turn around before you reach it. The Wildlife Tour (tram) is great because you can see the WHOLE park and the kids won’t wear out. The downside is that you don’t get off and explore every point of interest. The trams do stop or slow, but we didn’t see any disembarking.

How Much is the Tram Tour at Dogwood Canyon?

Tram tours start at $32 per adult (yes, in addition to the park entrance), and prices can increase depending on the day you visit. You should absolutely buy tickets in advanced if your heart is set on a tram tour, as they sell out quickly. Every tram tour we saw go by was completely full.

4- Segway Tours . We didn’t see any of these, but it is an option if you’d like to take a load off! Kids have to be at least 12 to participate, and the tours start at $40.

5- Horseback. Starting at $40, you can discover Dogwood Canyon by horse on this guided tour. Obviously this isn’t an option with small children, but it is an option for the older ones. 8 years and up can participate in a ride, and 12 years and up can select the longer ride that stops for a lunch break.

6- Private Off Road Tour . These are great for smaller parties of up to 3 people. Go into the back country to experience history and wildlife. $275 per group.

7- Guided Fishing Tour . Learn fly casting and try to catch some rainbow trout! $300

8- Kayak Tour . This is probably the coolest tour through the park. Head to the junction of Little Indian Creek and Table Rock Lake in a leisurely kayak tour. It’s a great spot for spotting large birds like eagles and herons.

Self Guided Tours of Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

We chose to walk through the park, so here is how to enjoy the park on foot.

When you arrive at the park, make sure to grab a map. Not only will this give you distances between points-of-interest, but the back of the map actually has little paragraphs on each point-of-interest so you can enjoy a self-guided tour.

The map will lead you from the treehouse, to waterfalls, to caves, the trailside restaurant, and even explain a little science in the Karst topography and why one side of the creek appears dry and all of a sudden reappears. The explanations are short and sweet, but really add a lot to the experience of discovering Dogwood Canyon with kids.

Make sure to pack some snacks and water!

There are 24 points-of-interest along the 3.5 mile trail. Some you have to be looking for, and some are right in front of you. Each are marked on the park map so you can keep track of how far you’ve gone. This is a really fun way to keep the kids excited about the long walk.

Is Dogwood Canyon Worth the Money?

When you think of outdoors activities, often it comes cheap or free. We also wondered if Dogwood Canyon would be worth the money and almost missed out. The answer is a resounding YES, it is totally worth it.

There were so many times after our visit that we were so relieved that we still decided to go. We still talk about how incredible beautiful Dogwood Canyon is and love flipping through pictures here.

So yes, if you can make it work, Dogwood Canyon is worth the money to visit.

Hotels near Dogwood Canyon

Mill Creek Resort – this hotel is only a few miles and 15 minutes away from Dogwood Canyon Nature Park. The units are actually spacious cabins with kitchens. They can sleep up to 6 people in multiple rooms. The resort is right on Table Rock Lake. It has a pool, playground, and fun amenities for the family to play.

D’Monaco – This is a luxurious resort the family will love. You can book a spacious unit with living areas, a gorgeous kitchen, multiple bedrooms, and incredible lake views. A Superior Villa will give you 3 bedrooms which can sleep up to 6. It’s right on Table Rock Lake and just about 15-20 minutes to Dogwood Canyon Nature Park.

Enjoy the pool, cabanas, and restaurant on-site for convenience.

Table Rock Resorts – Enjoy the pool, being right on the lake, a playground , and more at this family-friendly hotel near Dogwood Canyon. It’s about a 15 minute drive from Table Rock Resorts to Dogwood Canyon Nature Park.

This place is perfect for large families as you can sleep up to 10 in the 3-bedroom units. Choose from basic, lake view, or lakefront rooms. Units have kitchens.

The resort is full of fun. Enjoy the pool, mini golf, tennis courts, a fitness center, basketball, fishing, and more.

This is one of the more family-friendly hotels near Dogwood Canyon that is also more affordable.

FAQ about Visiting Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

How much does it cost to get into dogwood canyon.

The cost to visit Dogwood Canyon is anywhere from $11 to $21. The cost varies by day, and they note that the earlier you purchase, the cheaper your ticket will be. If you’d like to do additional activities in the park (horseback riding, tram tour, etc), there is an additional cost.

Can You Drive a Car Through Dogwood Canyon?

No, no cars are allowed in the canyon. If you don’t want to tour the park on foot, you can purchase a tram tour for an additional cost.

What Town is Close to Dogwood Canyon?

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is located in the town of Lampe, Missouri. Though you may be more familiar with the city of Branson, which is just 35 minutes away.

Do You Have to Pay To Hike at Dogwood Canyon?

While state parks are free to visit in Missouri, Dogwood Canyon is not a state park. It is privately owned, and therefore has an entrance fee to hike through the area.

Visiting Dogwood Canyon Nature Park with the Family

Dogwood Canyon was one of our favorite stops on our recent trip. It was a stunning area, filled with intense greenery and so. many. waterfalls. We felt like we had stepped into a fantasy movie in another world because we were so blown away with how much beauty there was everywhere we looked.

Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve

Developed in 1920 as a country retreat by two wealthy Missourians, Top of the Rock in Branson was purchased in 1987 by Bass Pro Shops owner Johnny Morris. Today, this 4,600-acre lakeside retreat encompasses stunning views and an outstanding list of activities. Long before the sunset slides into the horizon, groups will find plenty to do. If you’re a planner seeking to put a variety of options on the table for your group, Top of the Rock in Branson is for you.

Hike to Waterfalls and Sightsee on Golf Cart or Walking Tours

Top of the Rock in Branson offers many ways to discover its beauty. The Lost Canyon and Cave Nature Trail is where you’ll see dramatic views of Table Rock Lake, unusual rock formations and gorgeous waterfalls. There are two ways to enjoy this two-and-a-half-mile experience. A tour with golf carts seating four will take about 50 minutes. A walking tour on the trail, lasting just less than two hours, takes visitors across a 140-foot Amish bridge. Final destination for both tours is Lost Canyon Cave, which features a 40-foot waterfall. If the great outdoors is still calling, there are other possibilities available. Three options take full advantage of the scenic beauty of the Ozark Mountains and Table Rock Lake.

Tee Time at Top of the Rock in Branson

The Ozarks may be the perfect setting for golf courses. Some of the best names in golf architecture have added their names to courses. The Par 3 Top of the Rock is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course. Mountain Top Course is a unique 13-hole course designed by Gary Player. Johnny Morris and Tom Fazio combined on Buffalo Ridge, rated No. 1 course in Missouri by Golf Magazine. Ozark National, a Coore & Crenshaw design is open, and in 2019 Tiger Woods had his first public course when Payne’s Valley made its debut.

Cast a Line or Hit the Shooting Range

For those who would enjoy some time on the water, the marina’s veteran guides are ready to show you the best fishing spots. Table Rock Lake is nationally ranked for its bass and crappie abundance and the size of all breeds.

One of the newest additions to the complex is the Bass Pro Shops Shooting Academy. All skill levels are welcome, and shotgun, ammunition, clay targets, and required safety gear and instruction are provided.

Natural History of the Ozarks

To explore the Ozarks’ past, move inside to the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum . It takes visitors from prehistoric times to the cave dwellers of the region, continuing with the Native Americans, settlement of the American West and the Civil War. Dramatic galleries with Native American artifacts and artwork provide a memorable experience.

A wide assortment of culinary options awaits groups, but the Osage Restaurant is a favorite. Sweeping Ozark views, original Native American artwork and an upscale menu of regional specialties are all part of the experience. Plan to make the Top of the Rock Sunset Service part of your itinerary. With Table Rock Lake in the background, a lone traditional bagpipe is played. The distant sound of a single cannon blast concludes this special moment.

Dogwood Canyon Fly Fishing Academy

No fishing license, tackle or rods? No problem. All are available for those wishing to try their hand at catching and releasing a brilliant rainbow trout. The new Fly Fishing Academy offers hands-on learning for anglers at all levels. From fly-casting clinics to multi-day schools to guided catch-and-release trips, there’s something for the enthusiast in every group.

Sightseeing on Horseback

To explore Dogwood Canyon off the beaten path is to go horseback riding. Veteran guides take guests on a leisurely ride featuring one scenic view after another. At 24-stall Little Indian Stables, riders will have an opportunity to meet their horse before beginning their adventure. Choose between the one-hour ride and 2.5-hour Little Indian Lunch Ride.

Segway Through Dogwood Canyon

Segways have come to the canyon as technology meets the Ozarks. It only takes a brief training session to set riders on a 90-minute guided tour featuring park history and its most magnificent sites. For more experienced riders, a round-trip tour to the last waterfall on the trail, Wish Bowl Falls, is offered.

Wildlife Tram Tour

One of the more popular group activities is the Wildlife Tram Tour. This two-hour narrated tour places guests in a comfortable open-air tram. The journey begins along the canyon’s floor with views of waterfalls and towering bluffs. There are stops at the Hope Wedding Chapel and the Glory Hole to feed the fish.

Dogwood Canyon is very group-friendly. Most activities (excluding guided fly fishing) have group rates for 20+. Individual option packages may not qualify for a group rate, but are certainly a valued experience.

Dogwood Canyon Mill and Grill is built right on Indian Creek and provides the perfect setting for your next outing. DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 1 Enjoy our beautiful, new world-class offerings at Dogwood Canyon ! View a mill demonstration at the Dogwood Canyon Mill and have a delicious meal at the Canyon Grill. Afterwards take in the splendor of Indian Cliff Falls, take an adventurous stroll through the new Nature & Conservation Center and experience our magnificent treehouse built by Pete Nelson and the crew of Animal Planet’s hit TV show, Treehouse Masters.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 2 Looking across Little Indian Creek at this point, you will notice a cave opening high in the bluff. In 1990, a “bundle burial” was discovered in the Indian Burial Cave. Probably a male in his mid-30’s, this individual was radiocarbon dated to have lived in approximately AD 960. Also found in this area were the remains of three children ages 2-8 years dating back as far as AD 130. Approximately 1/2 mile of Little Indian Creek is accessible to self-guided anglers for trout fishing opportunities .

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 3 The unique and picturesque Long Pine Crossing was handcrafted in November 1992 by Daniel Y. Schwartz and his crew. They are members of an Amish community in Seymour, Missouri, east of Springfield. The bridge has a clear span of 80’ and consists of 12” x 12” beams salvaged from a century-old warehouse in Chicago prior to its demolition. Several tools used to build the bridge are on display nearby. Note: For your safety and the protection of the streams, please utilize the foot bridges specifically provided for walking and cycling. The floor of each foot bridge consists of planks made from recycled tires and plastic. No swimming, wading, or bike riding in the stream or crossings. Please use caution as you cross.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 4 Be careful as you travel by Ambush Pass. Legend has it that this former logging road was popular among hooligans as they lay in wait to ambush unsuspecting travelers. The road has changed and the pass is now overgrown with native vegetation. We think you are safe. Ambush Pass is also one of the many locations where food plots have been established to attract and benefit wild turkeys, whitetail deer and other wildlife.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 5 The Hope Wilderness Chapel, completed in 2002, is a replica of churches from the 1800’s. Handcrafted by Dogwood Canyon staff members, the chapel features local materials including native shortleaf pine logs, rough-sawn oak flooring and an eastern red cedar ceiling. The chapel seats 120 guests and is available for weddings, vow renewals, meetings and special services.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 6 Looking up the steep hill, you will notice some loose rocks around a small opening. This spot has been identified as a possible den for black bears that occasionally call Dogwood Canyon home. For your safety and to prevent erosion, please stay on the paved trail.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 7 Another great photo opportunity and “signature” location in the canyon is Thunder Falls. This 60’ waterfall has been enhanced to provide a glimpse of what the area looked like thousands of years ago while being carved out by water. In the fall of 1994, the feature movie “Ozarks: Legacy and Legend” was filmed in the IMAX format for the Ozarks Discovery IMAX Theater in Branson. Much of the movie was filmed at Dogwood Canyon including a baptismal ceremony here at Thunder Falls.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 8 You are viewing Six Stump Spring, one of the more visible of the many springs throughout the property. Look closely to see where the water actually comes out of the ground. These springs supply the cool, clean water necessary to sustain a healthy and thriving trout population. Fresh watercress, seen here on the surface, is commonly associated with spring sources. Jewelweed (or Touch-Me-Not) may also be found here and in many other locations throughout the canyon in late summer. It is said that this plant is an antidote for Poison Ivy if crushed and rubbed on the skin.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 9 You are approaching our Chuckwagon Site. The site’s wonderful stream-side atmosphere and location allow private groups to enjoy special meals ranging from hot dogs to lobster. Porta-potties are available for your use in this area as well. Many well-known sports, business and entertainment personalities have been guests here including President George Bush, Whitey Herzog, Waylon Jennings, Chuck Yeager, Johnny Cash and a host of others.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 10 Seven Mule Pass gets its name from the belief that seven mules were required to pull a wagon over the steep terrain in this part of the canyon.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 11 Three Shoots Pine exhibits unusual growth characteristics. This native shortleaf pine was victimized by a 20” snowfall in 1994 and now has only two shoots. Possible reasons for the tree’s growth include its genetic makeup or natural stresses such as an ice storm. Native Americans also used trees as “sign trees” to mark trails, meeting grounds, water sources, or other natural features. As you can see, the tree points to a cave across the road. The cave appears more substantial than it actually is and only goes into the mountain approximately 50’. During much of the year, the cave is the site of a spring. For your safety, please do not enter the cave.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 12 The magnificent bluff and over-hang on your right is known as the Great Spirit Rock Shelter. The oldest human remains ever discovered in the state of Missouri were found here in 1993 and date back nearly 8,000 years. Other items found include arrow points, crude pottery pieces, fire and refuse pits, and a turtle shell that was probably used as a rattle or container. This pool is not available to anglers so that you may enjoy viewing the large trout from the observation point above.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 13a If you choose to stay left at this junction, you’ll notice the Kid’s Cave. This scenic formation actually highlights a cave nearly 250’ long. However, the passage is only 12”–14” tall at times, thereby making its name appropriate.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 13b If you choose to stay right at this junction, you’ll see Fire Pit Cave. This beautiful geologic formation contained rare stone beads and well-preserved charcoal samples dating back approximately 3,000 years. The length of the cave is limited to about 40’. Again, for your safety, please do not enter the cave or climb on the rocks.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 14 The Glory Hole is often considered the highlight of the tour for guests of Dogwood Canyon . This breathtaking spot is home to giant rainbow trout. No fishing is allowed in this very special area. This pool is 16’ deep at its center. The reflection of light and depth of the water combine to create the typically bluish-green color. A cave extends approximately 300’ into the mountain behind the waterfall. The passage is 20’–30’ tall in some locations but is now inaccessible due to the water level. Much of this area is a collapsed cave formation created as the softer limestone eroded away. The handcrafted iron work found at the observation point above the pool and in other areas throughout the park were created by local artisans. Please use the bridge and trails as you enter and leave the area.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 15 The Seven Pools area is one of spectacular scenic beauty and tremendous fishing. The small dams or “weirs” have been designed to create oxygen flow and habitat for trout. Introduced and naturally reproducing wild rainbow trout challenge anglers fortunate enough to cast a fly on Dogwood Creek. A wide variety of natural food sources for trout can be found in the stream.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 16 Turtle Rock Bridge is unique due to its cobblestone surface and the unusual rocks that resemble turtle shells. These rocks are natural and originated in Oklahoma.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 17 Sam’s Spring is a great place for a rest stop. The obvious source of water has been tied to a location upstream at Emerald Pool. The large rock nearby (across from the spring) resembles a buffalo but your imagination may lead you to another conclusion.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 18 If you look to the left of the road you will see a flowing stream, and on the right side of the road the stream looks as if it disappears. This is called karst topography. It is a geologic feature that affects the creek by creating a “losing stream.” Water enters the ground through sink holes and moves beneath the surface. During wet seasons or periods of heavy rain, the stream may have water for its entire length but is typically intermittent above this point. Protecting our water resource is extremely important, particularly where this feature occurs.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 19 Emerald Pool often appears almost turquoise in color similar to the Glory Hole mentioned earlier.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 20 The massive Sycamore tree found here has been determined to be over 260 years old. An increment borer is used to take a core sample from the center of the tree without harming it. This also provides other information about the life of a particular tree including periods of stress as well as years of exceptional growth.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 21 The State Line Pool features a beautiful bluff that is uniquely framed by the changing seasons. In particular, winter months often find breathtaking icicles, some 20’ tall, formed by the water as it drips into the stream.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 22 Welcome to Arkansas! A portion of Dogwood Canyon is located in Arkansas. For your safety, it is extremely important that you keep left to avoid possible danger associated with our American bison, elk and Longhorn cattle herds.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 23 This is the “Trapper’s Cabin.” Built in 1993, this cabin houses our fly-fishing school, and features doors and windows taken from a very old building in New Mexico.

DOGWOOD CANYON – STATION 24 You’ve reached Wish Bowl Falls. This beautiful pool is home to our golden rainbow trout and is the turn-around point of the trail.
