EGYPTIAN TOUR-GUIDES AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP: A NEW APPROACH

Profile image of Dina Ezz El-Din

2015, Journal of Tourism Research

Since the Revolution of the 25 th of January 2011, Tourism in Egypt has been facing major problems. Among these is the large number of unemployed tour guides due to trip cancellations. An increasing need emerged to develop strategies in order to improve the current situation of tour guides. The main objectives of this research are to implement entrepreneurial approaches in the field of tourist-guiding. The study deals with starting a personal business as a tour-guide, through promoting tours and all related services. Such an enterprise has the advantage of being managed from home through the internet, using online applications and social media websites, not to mention the possibility to produce a large income. The research will conduct a qualitative approach by interviewing a number of Egyptian tour-guides. One of the main conclusions of the study is that Entrepreneurship would help tour-guides know how to market the services of their business. This requires building contacts with companies and individuals on all levels. The success of the business is accomplished by providing clients with the best offers they can get and to possess the know-how of promoting the required services. Recommendations of the study include that tour-guide should look for entrepreneurial ideas doing all the effort needed to make their business succeed. It is also highly recommended to create coordination with tourism suppliers and to build alliances with all relevant tourism promoters.

This study investigates the challenges that professional Jordanian tourist guides may encounter. The implication of this research stems from the fact that very little research, at least in Jordan, has addressed the problems that tourist guides encounter. Qualitative methods, using participants’ observations and in-depth interviewing methods, were used to generate insights from the collected data. The results reveal multiple critical challenges that impact the professional stability of tourist guides. Further efforts are required to fully understand the needs of tourist guides.

But it is observed that from the negative coefficients that the finance and societal factors make a negative impact on the tourist guide job. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS It is suggested that specialized courses should be offered by the Government to tourist guides to improve their performances and, financial and moral support should also be provided by the Government to take up Tourist guide profession. The tourist guides prefer the Government should support tourist guides to participate in global events of tourism. Social Implications It is found that the tourist guides profession is considered neither as a decent job nor as a prestigious job by the society and the media only can correct the view of the society. Family tourism is a growing market even though it is understudied and unexplored in Malaysia. Given the rising purchasing power and quality of life among families, and little work has been done on exploring these family friendly policies and their implementations, this article aims to uncover to what extent that family-friendly policies are implemented in Malaysia. This article utilised a descriptive method with qualitative data from historical writings, tourism reports and research findings concerning the participation of family tourists. This study revealed that the policies and implementations of family tourism are of different level of concern among various stakeholders. At the national level, families are encouraged at both explicit and implicit initiatives, while at the tourism providers families characters are commoditised as tourism products. The changing demand of families received attentions from the tourism providers as well as from the governmental agencies. The setting up of a comprehensive guideline on family-friendly destination should stand as a competitive edge in promoting family tourism.

Drawing upon the theoretical perspectives from activity competency model and prior tourism literature, this study proposes a conceptual framework to explain the impacts of professional competencies on service quality and tourist satisfaction. Empirical data were gathered from a large-scale online survey with 345 experienced group package tour (GPT) tourists to test the proposed hypotheses and research model. The proposed conceptual framework was validated using the partial least squares (PLS) technique. The empirical results indicate that tour guides' professional competencies significantly impact on service quality and tourist satisfaction. The results also show that tour guides' service quality positively influences tourist satisfaction. The findings provide insight into practical implications for the competence development of tour guides and proffer instrumental contributions to help travel 2 agencies strengthen tour guides' professional competences for effectively enhancing service quality of tour guiding and improving tourist satisfaction.

Cairo Tour Guide - Radwa T.

Hello everyone, I am an English-Speaking guide since 2007.I always plan to be a tour guide and meet different people from different nations.I do private tours in Cairo,Giza,Alexandria,Fayum...etc.

Giza Tour Guide - Aly E.

Aly, an Egyptian citizen, Egyptologist, and officially authorized as English speaking tourist guide for more than two decades. I have a profession (tour guiding) that enables me to meet new people every now and then. I love showing people around our great country. The ancient Egyptian civilization, the culture of modern Egyptian people are always inspiring for many people. The monuments erected by them are not only massive edifices to astonish us, but they bear witness for the great people once inhabited this part of the world. Having studied all the accumulated layers of the Egyptian history, living all my life surrounded by these unbeatable phenomena, and choosing to be the interpreter of the silent monuments (as many think they are !), made me feel having a moral responsibility rather than telling people about the great predecessors, show them the great ancestors we are nowadays, make tourists feel like they have a second homeland or even a second family in Egypt. Flexibility, passion, and willingness to help people having the most of their time are integral parts of my character according to previous clients.

Greetings to all who are drawn to the timeless wonders of Egypt! I am Mohamed, your humble guide on a journey through the ages. With over 15 years of experience as an Egyptology licensed tour guide, I've immersed myself in the captivating tapestry of ancient Egyptian history. My odyssey began in the picturesque city of Aswan, where the Nile's gentle currents weave tales of antiquity. Surrounded by majestic monuments and sacred sites, I developed an insatiable curiosity for the mysteries of the past, leading me to pursue guiding as my life's calling. From the iconic pyramids of Giza to the serene temples of Luxor, I've traversed Egypt, unraveling the enigmas of our ancestors for travelers worldwide. In the vibrant streets of Cairo, I embrace the pulse of modern Egypt, where tradition and innovation converge. Beyond guiding, my interests span cars, football, literature, and swimming. My faithful companion, Hamasa, embodies Egypt's spirit. As I look to the future, I'm excited to deepen my knowledge and craft unforgettable experiences for those who journey with me. Join me on a voyage of discovery, where every step reveals treasures to cherish. Together, let's embark on an odyssey through Egypt's rich legacy. “ Super professional and nice pyramid tour! ”

I had an excellent time with Maryam and our driver (I'm sorry to say I forgot his name)! We had a long and busy day, but we saw all the higlights, with Maryam arranging an additional camel ride at the pyramids. She did a very good job on taking the best possible pictures of me and knows al the picture perfect spots! She also informed us about the ancient Egyptian history with lots of interesting facts. The only thing I would add is that maybe a quick lunch in the middle of the day would be good as a break.

Felucca boats sailing on the River Nile, at Aswan. Trees are dotted among the buildings in the background.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.
