Undoubtedly quality food with a delectable taste. I had ordered tiffin for a meal that was beyond our expectations. Can't wait to order again. The veggies were fresh and had a distinct natural flavor. I must say the tiffin was nothing less than a homecooked food. I am thinking to subscribe to their tiffin services. Highly recommended Food Trip Goa services.

Goa is one of India’s most popular tourist destinations. The southwestern Indian state, which is split into northern and southern districts along the Konkan coast, welcomes millions of visitors from other parts of India who party the night away with affordable booze. Known as India’s Sunshine State, the area is also a favorite for foreign tourists, who frequent resorts, guesthouses, and beach cabanas, lured by the state’s sun, sand, and susegado, the Goan version of the laid-back life. Local food businesses have responded in kind. Walk along the famous stretch of beaches between Candolim and Baga, and you’ll encounter North Indian dishes like palak paneer or dal makhani, restaurant brands imported from major Indian cities, and Western burgers. Goa’s incredibly diverse, flavorful cuisine rarely makes appearances in the buzzier areas.

But Goans nurture a deep love for their food, evident in everyday meals (like little touches of pickled fruits) and special occasions (like the 16-layer egg-and-coconut cakes that appear around Christmas). Locals tie together recipes, ingredients, and kitchen know-how from Portugal, South India, and other parts of the world, creating a culinary legacy that often goes overlooked by tourists. Across Goa, you’ll find a vivid mix of breakfast joints, roadside carts, generations-old taverns, and contemporary resto bars, all proudly contributing to Goa’s culinary narrative.

There are opportunities to escape the tourist circuit in the capital, Panjim (also known as Panaji), as well as the coastal towns, islands, and inland villages. After just a few meals, you’ll know why Goa is one of India’s most underrated food destinations.

A hand holds up a dish, consisting of rice with various curries and other items, in front of a tropical background.

What’s the food in Goa like?

Although small in size, the state has a layered cuisine from centuries of power shifts. Hindu royal families and Muslim dynasties ruled Goa before the Portuguese arrived in 1510. The Portuguese colonized the area for about 450 years and heavily influenced culinary traditions in the process; many dishes and desserts still have Portuguese-derived names. Goa also acted as a center of trade with Arab merchants and other territories of the Portuguese empire, like Japan, Indonesia, and Mozambique, bringing in spices along with textiles, horses, and other goods.

Goan food largely relies on locally grown rice and seafood like Bombay duck, mackerel, kingfish, pomfret, mussels, and prawns. The coconut palm is especially important; it’s used to produce palm jaggery, scraped coconut meat, vinegar (commonly used to add sour notes to dishes or pickle produce), and coconut milk that thickens stewy vegetable curries like khatkhatem.

In terms of meat, chicken, lamb, and beef appear often at Goan celebrations, but pork is king. Although there’s a common stereotype that pork carries a stigma across India, the pig is integral to many Indian cuisines, including Goan, where every part of the fattened animal is put to precise use. The state’s cuisine also makes use of abundant spring and summer produce, like cashews, mangoes, jackfruit, and kokum.

Key terms for food lovers

Pao and poee.

Ask any Goan and they’ll tell you that local life is deeply tied to pao (Portuguese for bread): puffy, square-shaped, golden-crusted rolls. Baking has a long, nuanced history in Goa running back to the mid-16th century. In her book Cozinha de Goa: History and Tradition of Goan Food, Fátima da Silva Gracias explains that Portuguese missionaries taught European techniques to one of the communities in coastal Majorda in southern Goa; from there the knowledge spread across the state and up the northwestern coast of India.

Traditionally, dough was fermented with sur (palm wine), adding a fluffy texture, though most bakers use yeast today. Freshly baked pao makes a great pairing with curry or an omelet. There are also other types of bread, like the popular poee, a hollow discus of leavened whole-wheat bread. Across Goan villages, you’ll still find a poder (breadman) on his bicycle delivering freshly baked pao and poee to every house.

A tray of raw squid.

A member of the mangosteen family, kokum is a tropical fruit that grows wild in the forests along the Konkan coast. A common souring agent in the region, the sun-dried outer flesh of the fruit is also boiled to prepare drinks and cooling condiments.

The assortment of dishes in a lunch thali varies across India according to region, community, and class. In Goa, a thali typically comes with rice, coconutty and tangy fish curry, vegetables, solkadhi (a cooling coconut milk and kokum drink), and a choice of spicy, fried fish or prawns. Some Goan thalis also include kismur (a condiment combining coconut with fish or dried prawns), pickles, and traditional desserts like bebinca (layered cake).

You’ll often see fish rava fry or prawns rava fry on restaurant menus. A common way to prepare seafood, this involves marinating fish with chile powder, turmeric, and salt before coating items in a thin layer of rava (semolina) and shallow frying them for a delightful, subtle crunch. Rava is also used for frying potatoes, okra, and eggplant.

A bowl of pickled green mangos beside the jar they came from.

Long before the Portuguese arrived in Goa, locals were making feni, a colorless, aromatic spirit originally derived from the sap of the coconut flower. When the Portuguese introduced cashews to the state, many distillers switched to cashew apples for their base. Today, feni is so strongly associated with Goa, the state received a geographical indication (GI) tag for the drink, a mark of quality. Feni is usually enjoyed neat or with Limca (lemon-lime soda), but you’ll also find bars making creative cocktails with this heritage spirit. Homegrown brands like Aani Ek also sell artisanal feni infused with chile, lime, or honey and cinnamon.

Chicken, beef, lamb, crabs, and chickpeas all get slow-cooked in xacuti-style curry. A labor of love, this dish combines ingredients like dried Kashmiri red chiles, poppy seeds, peppercorns, and coconut meat, along with other herbs and spices, all sauteed and pounded to make a spicy, aromatic gravy. Xacuti is usually served with rice, but leftovers are also great drizzled over an egg omelet.

Much like the ubiquitous rava fry, recheado fish fry or recheado masala shows up on a lot of Goan menus. Recheado is a red spice blend prepared with Kashmiri red chiles and herbs. This marinade is usually stuffed inside or coated on a fish before it’s shallow-fried.

A hot, sour, vinegary curry commonly made by those living along the Konkan coast, sorpotel traditionally features pork meat and offal including heart, liver, tongue, and blood. It’s mostly a ceremonial dish, prepared for special days like Christmas and weddings, when it’s served alongside sanna (soft, steamed, rice-flour discs).

Where to eat in Panjim, North Goa, and South Goa

Confeitaria 31 de janeiro.

This 1930 Goan Portuguese bakery is located in a tiny alley in the Fontainhas neighborhood of Panjim’s Latin Quarter, tucked among the vibrant houses sporting red tiled roofs and picturesque porches. Grab one of the outdoor tables — covered with azulejo ceramic tiles depicting scenes of Goan life — to people-watch with one of the bakery’s prawn rissois (cheesy, prawn-stuffed, half-moon patties) and other classics like Swiss rolls and chocolate-rum balls. Come early for the bebinca, Goa’s famous, pudding-like layered cake (believed to have been first made by a nun in the 17th century), which is golden brown, eggy, and sweet.

Since 1913, Goans have made the multiple locations of Tato synonymous with a quick snack, tea, and breakfast. Staples include a range of vegetarian bhaji, like the sukhi (a dry potato dish), onion and tomato salad, mushrooms, or cowpeas. Each dish comes with a choice of puri (deep-fried whole wheat bread), pao, or fluffy, deep-fried banana-wheat buns dusted with cumin (like you might find in Mangalore down the coast).

Two spongy dosas served on a wooden board with a small clump of orange chutney, presented with a split coconut.

Kokni Kanteen

Indian tourists from other states flock to this little restaurant, which continuously hums with Konkani songs. You’ll definitely have to line up for the lunchtime fish thali, the restaurant’s most famous dish, which includes fried kingfish, mussels, dry prawns, and a lightly spiced fish curry, served alongside rice and other items like solkadhi.

Smack dab at the heart of Panjim, Bombil is a love letter to the small joints that once dotted Goa. The no-frills restaurant with vivid, yellow walls serves food inspired by owner Joseph Dias’s upbringing, especially the simple food cooked by his grandparents. Look for favorite bites like semolina-coated fried lepo (sole) or go for the daily lunch, which includes white rice with mango pickles, bombil (dried Bombay duck), and sorak (spiced, tangy coconut gravy known as “spinster curry” since it doesn’t include meat or fish). The menu also features kalchi kodi (day-old sorak eaten with hot pao and a fried egg) and more elaborate dishes, like a thali with kingfish that was part of the Sunday feasts of Dias’s childhood.

The Local Table

Dining at the Local Table feels like visiting old friends. The casual atmosphere adds to the warm welcome from chef Gaurish Madgaonkar and his wife, who run the place with help from their young daughter. The restaurant’s menu is a world apart from the North Indian style dhabas (roadside food stalls) catering to tourists along the busy Candolim Beach Road. Try the rava-coated silver pomfret, which is shallow-fried on a low flame, or the crab xacuti. Wash down your meal with a refreshing glass of kokum soda.

Once a sleepy little village with colonial-era residences, Assagao is now nicknamed the Beverly Hills of Goa for its fancy cafes, luxe boutique hotels, and fine dining venues. For a pocket-friendly option in the area, head to Sabor. Goan co-owner Jack Gerald opened the charming cafe in 2022, serving local snacks with modern twists (like roasted pork sandwiches on poee). With paned windows and indigo walls, it almost feels like a slice of Portugal in Goa.

A large hunk of crab meat attached to legs, served in a bowl with a light sauce.

While Brahmins across India are generally known to be strictly vegetarian, the coastal influences are evident in the fish dishes of Goa’s Saraswat Brahmin. Though the cuisine is rarely seen outside private homes, Shubhra Shankhwalker wants to promote the cuisine to a wider audience while honoring century-old recipes from her community. Set in a farmhouse in North Goa, Aayi’s — meaning “mother’s” — serves an experiential, hyperlocal, multicourse menu. Shankhwalker uses handpicked ingredients from local markets and fishmongers to make dishes like kalundarche hooman (pearl spot fish curry) and adsarache pole (tender coconut dosa with garlic chutney).

Susegad Anjuna

This incredible, little food truck in Mazal Waddo is just a 30-minute walk from the famous Anjuna beach. Everything here is home-cooked and perfect for a quick, affordable evening snack. While there are several meat-stuffed poee on offer, the winner is clearly the truck’s choris pao: poee stuffed with Goan pork sausage (originally influenced by Portuguese chouriço) that’s spicy and tangy with vinegar.

Home-Made Goan Fish Curry

Tucked away in a small dirt road far away from Anjuna’s buzz, this small, confusingly named restaurant gets busy at lunchtime, when people pile in for the fish thali. Order the rava fry prawns, grab a chair beneath the tin roof, and dig in with locals who prefer to keep this place a secret.

Monte Carlo

If you want to go where the locals eat, head to Monte Carlo. The family-run place in the village of Betalbatim offers Goan classics like pork jeerem meerem, a spicy, tangy gravy made with herbs like cumin, peppercorn, turmeric, and green chile, flavored with tamarind syrup, tomatoes, and vinegar. Look out for the tora shiro, pickled mango slices served alongside mains.

A dish of rice and torn papad (wafers), smoking from some kind of coal in the middle.

Mon Petit Frère

A tiny, open-air bakery, coffee shop, and brunch spot with rustic interiors in Colva, one of South Goa’s famous beach areas, Mon Petit Frère is one of those unexpected gems you find during a Goan holiday. Famous for breakfasts and Sunday brunches of Western-style eggs, crepes, pancakes, and falafel burgers, the cafe also serves house-made sourdough loaves, chocolate almond banana muffins, cinnamon buns, and handmade pasta dishes. Go for coffee and stay for the basque cheesecake that’s developed a cult following.

Ulhas is a gaddo (street stall) specializing in ros omelet. Your choice of spicy chickpeas or chicken xacuti curry is drizzled over a fluffy omelet, topped with chopped onions and coriander leaves, and served with fresh pao and a lime wedge.

Kausar’s Biryani

Perhaps the best place for biryani in all of Goa, Kausar’s offers homestyle chicken and mutton dum biryani (layers of rice and meat slow-cooked in a large pot). There are also other popular Indian dishes like butter chicken; Mangalorean chicken ghee roast marinated with spices, curry leaves, ghee, and jaggery; and desserts like sheer khurma (sweet vermicelli pudding) prepared by Muslims during Eid.

Cavatina by Avinash Martins

At his Benaulim restaurant, renowned chef Avinash Martins serves Goan food with a contemporary twist, including a modern take on Indigenous Goan food and highly seasonal produce. Check out the spanakopita made with Goan tambdi bhaji (red amaranth) and cashew butter; or go for Martins’s toranja starter, a local pomelo tossed with onions, cilantro, cucumber, mint, dried Bombay duck, and a tangy, spicy dressing of chiles, tamarind, and jaggery.

The best places to drink in Goa

For the record.

India’s first vinyl bar, founded by audio engineer and jazz musician Buland Shukla, this Panjim hangout has a curated list of craft cocktails made with native spirits like feni and seasonal ingredients like amaranth. The bar’s impressive food menu focuses on different types of fermentation.

No guide to Goa is complete without this iconic space, where time has little meaning. Frequented by locals, Joseph is an old bar with rustic decor and space for about 15 people. Grab a draught beer and sit down for a chat with Prabhakar Azagaokar — known simply as Gundu — Joseph’s iconic, always-smiling barman, who’ll whip up anything you like.

Villa 259 Taproom & Cocktail Bar

This tap room is fancy, like everything else in Assagao. Set in a charming old, renovated Portuguese house with plenty of private nooks, the restaurant and bar serves modern European food and great cocktails named after Goa’s iconic tourist spots. There’s live music on the weekends.

The Flying Goat

The Flying Goat not only does great coffee and cocktails using local ingredients, but it’s also an incredibly peaceful spot to while away the time with an extensive book collection. Full of houseplants, friendly dogs, and soulful music, it’s dreamy and intimate, particularly during monsoons.

Patnem Chai Shop

One of South Goa’s oldest shops for chao (the Konkani term for chai), Patnem is a go-to place for samosas (deep-fried patties stuffed with spicy potatoes, peas, and meat). With images of Hindu goddesses flanking the vintage pink walls, this iconic place is run by friendly folks who welcome a mix of foreigners and locals.

A cute little bar reviving the tavern culture in Goa with a contemporary twist, Feli occupies a spot in the beautiful village of Benaulim. The cocktails pay homage to Goan traditions, incorporating ingredients like coconut feni and mango. The watering hole also pours craft beers from Susegado, Goa’s first microbrewery.

Cows on the baga beach: only in India: strange things about Goa

By the shore of Arabian Sea, Goa, a small Indian state sits pretty on the Western coast. Aside numerous pretty beaches dotting the sea, Goa unfolds luminous layers of history for a curious soul. A walk on the old Goa’s narrow cobbled (and UNESCO heritage) streets tells volume on the 450 years of Portuguese colonial past. Tambi Surla, a Shiva temple hidden on in the forest of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary has stories to tell from another era. Beyond the sunny long stretched shore of Baga and Candolim, Goa keeps her secrets in the lagoons and backwaters of Mandovi river. It had always been my dream to travel to Goa for seven days. When I finally did, I wished if only I would have had another couple of weeks to explore all the splendors the state has on offer.

7 days in Goa needs to be allocated wisely!

Just to give a rough idea before I explain this 7 days in Goa Itinerary further, Goa can be segmented in 4 parts. This includes the most beautiful beaches of Goa . You may explore some of them in a long weekend vacation to Goa as well!

  • Baga and Calangute: The two beaches on the North Goa are strategically located closeby. This is where maximum number of tourists visit. These beaches are usually crowded on tourist season (super crowded on long weekends). However, there are plenty of activities, cafes, places to stay. Expect to pay tourist price for everything.
  • North Goa : Beyong Baga, there are beautiful beaches at the wee end of the north. Consider Arambol, Ashwem, Mandrem. They remain pristine and away from the hawk eye of vendors.
  • South Goa : Away from everything, South Goa holds the true secret of freedom, which gave Goa its fare share of fame. beaches, forts, hikes and plenty of unexplored regions lies here. If you seek quaint, you must visit South Goa!
  • Panaji : The capital of Goa, houses only a couple of local beaches. Panaji is where you will be heading if you are in Goa for work. Despite a lack of beach life, Panaji is famous for old Latin quarters, UNESCO heritage churches and vibrant local life.

Day 1: Reaching Goa & Stay at Baga

Stay at Baga, Dine by the beach

Assuming you are flying into Goa, you are ideally to reach Dabolim airport at the start of the day. If you are late, say reaching by 10 pm or so, it may be a challenge to get a mode of public transport to Baga. It is best if you get in touch with you accommodation provider.

Kadamba line of AC bus fleet runs at least till 6 pm. However, public transport in Goa is still in its nascent stage.

If you are traveling by train, you have plenty of cabs to hire from the station itself. indian railway stations are identical that way.

It will take at least an hour to reach from airport to Baga.

Reserve this day for rendezvous with the beach. Expect a glorious sunset.

Secure a seat by the beachside restaurants. Ratnakar is a fine choice if you like sheesha and alcohol with high streaks of energy. Tito’s is more famous among the tourists. Do make a reservation before you visit.

Yab Yum Resort: Eco resorts in Goa

Alternatively , Goa also houses India’s only casino ships close to its shoreline. Since gambling is prohibited on Indian land, these casino ships are permanently anchored on the sea. They ensure even the rough waves of monsoon very well. I visited Deltin Royal Cruise on the fateful night of Cyclone Kyarr and did not feel a thing. The next morning, the fallen coconut trees of the Ashwem beach narrated the story.

Anyway, experiencing a cruise liner is a prized deal. The ship has various games on-board and forms of entertainment aside a large buffet. Sparkling goblets of wine galore everywhere. I did not find the food amusing though. If you like to party the night away, the Cruise liners of Goa will be your best choice!

Day 2: Birding at Salim Ali Sanctuary, Divar Island & Latin quarter at Old Goa UNESCO sites

Birding and heritage walk in Old Goa

Since Goa will have you for good seven long days, we will allocate a day for the hinterlands of the coastal state.

Wake up early and head towards the Divar island, Goa’s largest riverine island on Mandovi river. Ironic because in Konkani language, Divar means small.

Home to an exclusive high class wellness resort Mercure Devaaya, Divar island is intense on local heritage. Timeless Portuguese bungalows sleep under the shadow of banyan trees. Old churches and quaint little sleepy neighborhood covers Goa’s Mantra for peaceful life, Susegad.

Next to Divar island, lies Chorao island , connected by Ribandar ferry. Chorao island houses the famed Dr. Salim Ali Bird sanctuary. I think this can be a great educational experience for kids too. From mangroves to crocodile and mud-skippers & crabs, all join in to celebrates the fast depleting bird population.

Best time for birding at Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary: 6 am to 8 pm. “Afternoon no bird”, told me the guard at Mercure Hotel.

Some species of Birds that can be seen at Chorao island: Brahminy Kites, Egrets, Heron, Little Black Cormorants, Paradise fly catcher, Kingfishers, woodpeckers, Drongo etc.

No cost for passengers on the ferry. INR 10 for vehicle, in case you are bringing in a cycle. There is a ferry at 6:20 am.

If you reach early, you will find a guide, who shows around the island on a private boat and charges a fee.

Old Goa: UNESCO heritage sites: Velha Goa

On the way back, make a stop at Old Goa. Also known as Velha Goa, this is listed as WORLD UNESCO heritage site for cultural heritage of its numerous churches! It is also one of the first seats of Catholic Christianity in India.

Goa, during the rule of Portuguese was hailed as the Rome of the east. One look at the remnants of the Old Capital of the Portuguese in India, and you will know why.

Velha Goa houses some of the country’s finest cathedrals and Churches. Be it the whitewashed Se cathedral or the humongous Basilica of Bom Jesus, they are grand in structure, and stand witness to Goa’s regal past. A catastrophic plague outbreak and subsequent invasions led to Velha Goa being abandoned.

There are plenty of other churches and historical areas to be visited in close vicinity. Here is a list of Old Goa’s famed churches:

  • Convent of Our Lady of Angels
  • Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
  • St. Augustine Tower
  • Agustinian Convent
  • Church of St. Cajetan
  • Mill Stones of Gun Powder Factory
  • Museum Of Christian Art

Old goa has beautiful Hotels and Home stays available for rent. Check out here .

Take care while exploring the area, especially if you are on your own. The narrow alleys and old houses are often prone to snake attacks.

Fontainghas: Portuguese Houses in Goa. At Mercure Devaaya resort

Head towards Fontainhas , the Latin Quarter of Goa. This is the last stop before you are heading back to the beach at Baga.

Often termed as the Old Quarter or Latin Quarter of Goa , Fontainhas houses Old Portuguese Bungalows that are painted with a riot of color. Do not be surprised if they resemble like one quaint little town from an obscure European countryside. The houses has old school wall sized glass window, panes of which is colored in white. Oftentimes, an Azulejos tiles adorn the gate.

There are two beautiful eateries at Fontainhas. They are, Venite Bar and Viva Panjim . Both are quirky and very photogenic (okay, Instagrammable places in Goa). Google both and choose where you wanna visit. Joseph Bar remains as one old world wonder at Fontainhas! If you are craving for good Konkani cuisine, head towards Saib . I love their fish Thali. Awadh House is one of the better places to eat in Panjim if you are craving fro delectable Awadhi cuisine of North. It differs from the Punjabi Thalis to a large extent so try if you are a meatlover.

Truth is, I have seen neighborhoods like Fontainhas in multiple places while exploring the interiors of Goa. However, Fontainhas has opened its arm for tourists, with beautiful galleries, guest houses, and cafes and is located strategically in Panjim. You will not get these benefits in the rest of old neighborhoods in Goa, though they seemed to be more rustic and authentic.

The best part of Fontainhas is, you can retire here for a day, if you can let go the call of the beach. A few famous home stays at Fontainhas are: La Maison , the Caravela Homestay , Abrigo Fontainhas , Mateus Boutique Hotel, the White Balchao . A good Hostel in this area is the Old Quarter .

Check here for more stay near Panaji .

Considering it is a long day since early morning, it is recommended to put up at Fontainhas. However, if you have to, you can be back at Baga or Calangute. Try to make it before the sunset so that you have beautiful view of the setting sun behind ocean.

Baga has a number of beachside accomodation. Feel free to check the may. I would recommend a few based on previous experiences: Casa Cubo , Goa Beach House , Casa De Goa Boutique Resort.

Day 3: Beach Hopping to North Goa, Visit a night Market

Explore beaches of North Goa: Vagator, Anjuna, Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem, Arambol

The day starts with exploring the beaches of North Goa. Rent a bike and start early. Things you need for a bike rental: 1. Government ID for deposit. You get it back once you return the bike, with fuel recharged. 2. INR 250 per day as rental fee (seasonal variation is expected) 3. Goa, like the rest of India, drives on the left of the road

Paved highway stretches till the wee end of the state border. You can ride as far as you want. Make pit stops on the way for a quick sugar cane drink, or snap a postcard of the rural huts adorned with floral design. You can take a detour off the highway and make pit-stops among the coconut groves for that quintessential Instagram shot.

Originally, it was shot in ar Parra. I am talking about the famous Goa scene from the Bollywood movie, Love you Jindagi, where Alia Bhat cycles amidst pristine verdant valley dotted with coconut trees with a hill at the backdrop. Now the village is raged with tourist footfall and is on the verge of charging tourists an entry fee.

I suggest skip Parra and look out for a similar setting off the main road, which lies plenty in Goa. Drive towards up north till you reach Vagator beach. The cliff hides the moon-shaped beach from prying eyes of the world.

From Vagator, head towards Morjim beach. Morjim is a rocky beach. Tidal waves bare up the sandy shore in day time. If you are looking for a beach to swim, head towards Ashwem. I stayed by the Ashwem beach at Yab Yum Resort for a couple of days and vouch for the relaxing vibe here. It is a crescent shaped beach, great for swimming. The waves swell well and make it a choice for surfers too.

I suggest stop at the La Plage for lunch. The beachside restaurant serves great French cuisine.

If you want to explore more beaches up north, you have Mandrem and Arambol on the same coast line. Saddle up the bike and wizz past green patches of verdant valley, cow shades, backwaters, dry river beds. You have reached the last wilderness of Goa!

Heading back to Baga from this area is a good 1.5 hours drive. Road is good. I have even seen traffic jams on certain days post sunset. In this route, there are 4 scenic spots to watch the sunset. You choose one based on your preferences.

Sunset points:

  • Chapora Fort (of Dil Chahta Hain movie fame) for adventurers
  • Sunset point at Anjuna for those who love a rocky beac
  • Romantic sundowner at the Thalassa Cafe, small Vagator beach
  • Arambol Beach where sunset takes place in the rhythm of iconic drum circle by the last remaining hippie trail (Far off from Baga hence be prepared for a long drive back home)

On the way back, make it a point to stop at the night markets of Calangute. You may also plan a visit to the iconic Anjuna Flea market which runs every Wednesday from 9am to 6pm. Once a place where Hippies traded their exotic European made items, now is flooded with Chinese products, swimwear and costume jewelry.

Once you are back in Baga, rest for a while. For dinner, head out to Souza Lobo. Now running by the third generation of a local family, Souza Lobo is a beach side iconic bar and served amazing cheese baked crab. Highly recommend.

Day 4: Indulge in some watersports & reach South Goa

Fort Aguada, Sinquerim beach, Travel to South Goa

This is the last day in North Goa for this one week itinerary. To make the most of it, we will let our adrelanine rush through! Today, we will flirt with the crazy waves of Arabian sea.

From Baga, head straight towards Aguada beach. The Portuguese Fort stands erect for centuries keeping a close eye against enemy invasion. Aguada is also famed for filling ship tanks with potable water in olden days.

A four storey light house stand at the end of Aguada. Explore the fort and find a a way to the Sinquerim beach which lies next to Aguada.

fort aguada: itinerary for 7 days in Goa

Watersports at Sinquerim Beach

People from all over India head towards Sinquerim beach for a number of watersports. From benign banana boat to dangerous jet jet ski, you name it and you get it! Kitesurfing, parasailing etc takes place too.

I suggest go for parasailing. You fly high over the Arabian sea, with the Aguada fort on left and endless ocean on the other side. It is simply breathtaking.

Prices vary depending on demand and seasonal footfall. Also, water sports activity is closed during monsoon owing to killing wind and swells. we paid INR 2000 per head back in 2017 for parasailing.

watersports in Goa

Heading towards Palolem Beach, South Goa

It is time to head towards South Goa now. While South Goa does not match up to the North Goa when it comes to party or lively vibes, it hides stretches of pristine, verdant land and some of the finest beaches of Indian subcontinent.

From the Central bus station at Panjim, bus ply towards Margaon in South Goa till 6 pm. It charges a nominal INR 30/50. You can also rent a car or a bike and drive towards Palolem in south. On the way, make it a point to stop at the ruined fort of Cabo De Rama. If you can make it during Sunset, you will be getting pristine shots! Cabo De rama is one of the most offbeat things to do in Goa.

7 days in Goa, an offbeat itinerary

Day 5: Beach day at Palolem & Patnem

A relaxing beach day in Goa by the world famous Palolem beach

From Yoga to Cow watching to boat-ride to catch a glimpse of the Dolphins, you have an entire day to relax and soak in the glorious sun in Goa on this day! In this 7 day long itinerary of Goa, this is probably the first day of a beach living.

As we say, “Der Aye par Durast Aye.” It came late but it came in style!

One of the leading reporting agency listed Palolem as Top 20 places to visit in Asia or sorts, you know what I mean. Ever since, a number of tourists head towards Palolem and long for a stay by the coveted beach hut. Colorful bamboo made beach huts adorn the sea-shore. With tourists came shops and cafes too.

food trip goa

However, Palolem remains significantly off the beat beach destination in Goa, compared to Baga or Calangute. Tourist footfall has not yet disrupted local life. Early morning, you can see fishermen busying themselves for the day’s toil. A dog and a cow will join you at the beach as you tan yourself. Overall, it remains one of the laid beach beaches in Goa and feels nice.

In the evening, walk towards, Patnem, a smaller and lesser known beach located close by. I think it is 10 minutes walk. It is beautiful nonetheless.

Day 6: Choose a day trip between Dudhsagar or Karwar

Dudhsagar Waterfalls embodies what monsoon does to the state of the Goa, with its lush green dense surrounding amidst the steep of the Wetern Ghats and four tiered cascading flow of white water, meaning ocean of milk. Located at Mollem, South Goa, Dudhsagar calls for a day trip and trekking up the hill to experience something ethereal. The waterfall is shared between the states of Karnataka and Goa.

It is located by the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. A few spice plantation and a farm stay is located close by too. Tambi Surla, a twelfth century Shiva temple is located here.

If you are heading towards Goa from Bangalore by train, make a stop at Castle Rock. From Pune or Mumbai, stop at Kulem. Shared Jeep goes till the waterfall if you are not too keen to trek the entire distance. Also, there is a daily cap on the number of people allowed to visit, especially during monsoon. Do take an account for that while planning for Dudhsagar trekking.

The trekking is through dark long tunnel made a century ago, now abandoned. Lifeless train tracks kiss the ground. Aroma of fresh rain makes one dizzy. You reach the fall and reach a small natural pool, where swimming is allowed. You can even change to a swimsuit.

If you are journeying by train through Konkon coast, you will get a full view of the falls. It looks spectacular during comsoon. earlier train used to stop for a few minutes. However, trains just slow down these days and do not stop.

Usually fed by torrential rain, Dudhsagar loses its glory during dry season. Though the trek is rewarding nonetheless.

Dudhsagar Falls

Alternatively, visit the Karwar Beach

“The sea beach of Karwar is certainly a fit place in which to realize that the beauty of Nature is not a mirage of the imagination, but reflects the joy of the Infinite and thus draws us to lose ourselves in it. Where the universe is expressing itself in the magic of its laws it may not be strange if we miss its infinitude; but where the heart gets into immediate touch with immensity in the beauty of the meanest of things, is any room left for argument?” Rabindranath Thakur

If you are not too keen on trekking to Dudhsagar Falls or traveling during turbulent monsoon, I suggest drive towards Karwar. Located by the coast of Uttara Karnataka, Karwar is an untouched region, where local flavor is very strong. It is only half an hour’s drive from Palolem. It is where kali river meets Arabian sea.

Karwar has a beach named after Rabindranath Thakur. Tagore beach, as they call it, also houses the annual three days Karwar festival. For me that is reason enough to fall in lve with Karwar.

You can also visit nearby pristine islands, provided low tide, and a ruined fort named Sadashivgar.

Kurle Ambat , the delightful Crab Masala of Konkan region is a must have while traveling in Karwar. Also, the iconic Gadbad ice cream, where bits of fresh fruit tease cold cream gently in a tunbler! Hotel Amrut is particularly famous for sea food platter. The ghee roasts and sukka tells you that you are truding a fine border area, close to Goa yet so not Goa!

Karwar has plenty of water sports but rates are cheaper than Goa. The beach also houses INS Chapal Warship museum. INS Kadamba (named after the Kadamba dynasty of the region) is Indian naval base located at Karwar.

Day 7: Beach day & Return

The seventh day in Goa beckons. The seven days in Goa whizzed past, right?

I know. Goa always does this. She akes up for a tremendeous trip and only leaves you wanting more of Goa.

If you are roadtripping in Goa and live somewhere down south, afternoon is a good time to start. If you are headed back towards Mumbai or the airport, you need to pack up early. Palolem is is 60 KM away from Dabplim. On a good day, it is a 90 minutes drive. But we suggest account for another hour extra. Dabolim is a small airport and sometimes the queue can get painfully long.

Assuming the flight/train is scheduled at night, you still have the morning to explore a few more beaches of Goa. It is all the more possible since the drive is through the coastal route.

Following are the beaches you can stop by while heading back to the airport.

  • Agonda beach
  • Colva beach
  • Betul beach
  • Varca beach
  • Benaulim beach

Instead of beach hopping, you can also make a quick day trip to the nearby Butterfly beach from Agonda. Secluded by high cliffs, Butterfly beach can only be accessed by a boat. It looks a lot like a small lagoon with clear water. Butterfly beach is famous for Sunset views.

Agonda has plenty of good places to eat. I love Little Plantain leaf in Agonda. Love Bite is a great choice too for cozy vibes.

Also read: Zakaria Street- Kolkata’s hidden streets w here food connects the worlds apart!

If you have a little longer than 7 days in Goa, I suggest follow this itinerary but spread it evenly. Keep a day to explore the beaches of south. Take two days to relax by Palolem beach and one extra day at Ashwem beach in North. Thus, you get to enjoy Goa for 10 days and indulge in the best things to do in the sunshine state. This itinerary equally covers the heritage and beaches of Goa.

If you are heading to Goa during monsoon, may be add one day for Divar island. Monsoon in Goa makes plenty of beaches off limit for tourists with coast guards barring entry. They are justified because Arabian sea becomes a demon with undercurrent pulls etc. Shacks do not open either. That said, monsoon in Goan hinterlands is breathtaking with lush green Western ghats and hidden waterfall trails!

I’ve never been parasailing but it looks so fun! Especially getting a view of the beautiful beaches.

Goa looks so beautiful to visit! Dudhsagar Waterfalls looks stunning with the train tracks that go beneath it. The food there looks really yummy as well.

Dudhsagar Falls looks particularly incredible – it kind of reminds me of Multnomah Falls in the US with the way the bridge goes across it. We didn’t make it to Goa on our India trip, but southern Indian food is one of my all-time favorites so next time we’ll definitely be checking this region out!!

My Ultimate Food Guide for Your Solo Trip to Goa, India

  • March 17, 2021
  • goa , india , solo , travel , wanderer , wanderlust

Goa is a popular travel destination for people of all ages. Be it the  famous beaches , the party life, tourist attractions, wonderful wildlife, flea markets or the food! There is something for everyone here. Something that everyone loves.

I have  travelled solo to Goa  multiple times now, and I must say, there is nothing like Goa. It has quite literally become my second home now.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kokni Kanteen | Goa (@koknikanteengoa)

When it comes to food, Goa offers some of the most delicious dishes you will ever eat. Goan, Portuguese, North Indian, Chinese, Mangalorean, Awadhi, Naga, and Manipuri are some of the many cuisines here. And they taste delicious too! It feels like you get to experience various cuisines from all over the country in Goa. Along with all of this, the seafood, street food, and regional desserts are not to be missed.

This blog is the one-stop solution for all your food queries. I will tell you about the different cuisines, dishes and where to eat from. Read on!

Start with some classic Goan cuisine!

Even though Goa is known for its Portuguese dishes and the variety of Indian cuisines that it has to offer, the cultural Goan dishes hold their own. The staple food of the Goans is rice and fish curry, which they totally enjoy eating. And not only fish curry, but you will find a variety of fish dishes that the locals enjoy.

I would highly recommend that you try the staple food of the locals, and trust me, you won’t regret it. Another must-try is the Xacuti. Available in chicken, lamb, or beef, it contains poppy seeds, red chillies, and coconut. A variety of spices give the dish a strong red colour. One of my most favourite Goan dishes is Cafreal Chicken. It is made by marinating chicken with coriander leaves, green chillies, and other spices. It is then fried and eaten with rice, salad, or by itself.

Where to eat?

Viva Panjim is the place to be if you want to try Goan cuisine. They offer not only the dishes that I have mentioned above but almost every other local Goa delicacy like fried fish, ambot tik, sorpotel, sanna, vindaloo. Other restaurants that I would recommend are Souza Lobo in Calangute and Mum’s Kitchen in Miramar.

The popular Walking Food Tour of Goa

This is one of the  many interesting things  you cannot miss during your solo trip to Goa. It is a fun activity that allows you to taste some of the tastiest local delicacies from every nook and corner of Goa. The best part about this experience is that the local guide tells you a story about every place you cross during your tour. This gives you some knowledge about the place and dishes, which makes the whole journey interesting. Put all of this together, and it enhances your experience multiple folds without making you feel bored.

Some of the delicacies that you will taste during your food tour are

  • Prawn and Cheese Rissois
  • Perrard (a local delicacy made of guava)
  • Kalva tonak (shellfish curry)
  • Bolinnas (local macaroons)
  • Chicken Xacuti
  • Alsande gravy

You get to eat from places that are otherwise quite hard to find as a solo traveller, which is the best part of their service. You also get some free goodies, which can be memories from your solo trip to Goa . Keep in mind that this is a group activity that requires a minimum of 2 people. Even though you are on your solo trip, finding a couple of other tourists shouldn’t be a problem.

Feel so”fish”ticated!

The Goans love their fishes. And when the staple food of someplace is fish curry and rice, you can expect numerous seafood restaurants. The variety of fish-related dishes will never bore you! Some of these include pomfret, shark, tuna, sardine, crabs, prawns, lobsters, squids, and mussels. And with so much to choose from, you will always have something new to try.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Goa Eats™ । India (@goaeatss)

I would suggest that you try out a few dishes here. And if you do not like fishes or prawns because it does not taste good to you, just try it once because these are like nothing else that you have previously tasted!

Quite a lot of restaurants offer seafood in Goa. Fat Fish in Calangute is the most popular seafood restaurant and one that you shouldn’t miss. They have a wide variety of mouth-watering dishes, right from fishes to prawns to crabs! You can also check out Spice Goa in Mapusa, which is not as popular but offers fresh food as they use fishes that they catch every morning. And then, you can visit The Fisherman’s Wharf. This is a fancy restaurant that also serves fancy food. And needless to say, delicious food too!

Boa comida, bom humor!

The Portuguese had a great influence on the food culture of the Goans. They introduced potatoes, tomatoes, and chilli peppers to India via Goa. They also introduced beef and pork to India, and that is the reason for the popularity of these meats in Goa. Even though the Portuguese introduced these meats, a majority of the Indian population does not eat them.

But there is a lot more. For example, arroz doce is the Portuguese version of kheer. Even though I love my kheer, I must say that arroz doce has got a taste of its own. Chamuças are equivalent to the Indian samosa. The famous vindaloo is a Portuguese dish that consists of pork. While it primarily contains only pork, I have tasted it from some places which switch the pork with chicken. And finally, feijoada. It is a stew that contains beans with pork or beef. If you are into eating beef and pork, do try vindaloo and feijoada during your solo travel to Goa.

Viva Panjim is one of the few good restaurants that serve authentic Portuguese dishes. Located in Fontainhas, visit this place for some lip-smacking delicacies. Casa Portuguesa Restaurante is a classic Portuguese restaurant in Calangute that has been running for over 30 years now! That longevity speaks for itself. It is a major tourist attraction when it comes to Portuguese food, something you shouldn’t miss. And finally, O Coqueiro is the perfect place for most people, located in Penha de França. They serve Portuguese dishes with a jot of the local Goan additions to it. This is perfect for someone who doesn’t want to be experimental but also wants to try something new.

Something from every part of the country

Even though Goa is famous for the regional and Portuguese dishes, countless restaurants offer a variety of other cuisines too. Now you might be thinking – why should I eat something other than the famous regional dishes while I am in Goa? Well, even though the regional dishes are great, the dishes from other parts of the country contribute to the wholesome food experience in Goa.

North Indian thalis here in Goa are delicious, and you can find them in many restaurants. But there’s a difference. They have a Goan twist to them, which makes them unique. For example, finding a fish fry or a fish curry in most thalis is normal here. Also, the Goans love their spices which makes the food deliciously spicy!

Mangalorean food is quite famous in Goa too. However, there aren’t any good restaurants for Mangalorean food that I could find during my solo trip. And multicuisine restaurants offer some great choices.

Other than North Indian and Mangalorean dishes, other cuisines like Punjabi, Naga, Manipuri, Gujarati, South Indian, and many others are available here. And finding restaurants for these cuisines is not a big task either.

I know that all these cuisines are very interesting, and you are already on your feet, ready to fly to Goa. But before you do so, make sure that you  learn a little more about the place .

When it comes to North Indian food, The Rasoda in Panaji serves the best food! Everything from the taste, service to hygiene stands out here. If you like Punjabi North Indian food, Sher-E-Punjab in Panaji is food heaven for you. If you wish to eat North Indian food somewhere other than Panaji, Delhi Darbar in Calangute has got you covered! Not only is the taste amazing, but the ambience of this place is like none other.

Talking about Mangalorean and South Indian restaurants, Casa Moderna in Panaji is one of the best restaurants in Goa which offers Mangalorean dishes. If you are a South Indian who is homesick in Goa, or you simply enjoy South Indian food, then South by Banana Leaf in Candolim is the place for you. Also, check out the popular Gunpowder restaurant in Assagao, which is primarily known for its South Indian dishes.

If you are craving some Gujarati food, Bhojan and Navrang Restaurant, both in Panaji, should be your go-to places. Everything from dhokla to fafda to thepla is available here. If you aren’t sure how to visit so many places during your solo travel, do  plan an itinerary  and make the most of your time in Goa.

Find happiness on the streets!

It is often said that one need not be hungry to eat some street food. And this cannot be further from the truth in Goa. You will find street vendors with their carts or stall, selling every snack you can think of, right from early morning till late in the evening.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aniket Bhave (@dextaaaar)

While some people say that these are just snacks that are meant to be eaten between meals, I would argue that sometimes, these can be eaten as complete meals in themselves! Even though these foods do not contain a lot of nutritional values and are usually considered unhealthy, having them once in a while never hurts anybody. I have mentioned some famous street foods in Goa below.

  • Samosas – Most of us know samosas as aloo samosa. But the Goans take it to the next level by making it non-vegetarian. Chicken, mutton, or beef samosas are very popular here.
  • Chorizo Pav (Goan sausages) – This is pork meat eaten with a slice of bread and some toppings like onions and potatoes. The Goans enjoy it as breakfast or as a snack.
  • Gadbad Ice Cream – A tall glass filled with ice cream and jelly flavors – you can eat this anywhere in Goa. You can even make your childhood memories come alive if you are an Indian.
  • Poi – This is the local Goan bread that is sweet and fluffy. You can eat it with your favourite curry or simply with butter.
  • Chinese Fast Food – Trust me, nothing beats Chinese fast food on the streets, not even high-class restaurants. The noodles, fried rice, and manchurians made on the street have a taste of their own which will leave you wanting more of it.
  • Shawarma – This is a middle Eastern dish that found its way not only to Goa but to the rest of the country as well. It is made up of chicken or mutton and wrapped in pita bread.
  • Bondas – Informally known as the brothers and sisters of the samosa, they come in all shapes and sizes. Served with green chutney, they are the perfect companion to your cup of tea in the evening.

Literally anywhere in Goa!

Well, that’s enough talk about food for now. I hope that you learnt something new about the food in Goa. If you would like to learn more about food in Goa, click  here .

If you are one of the few people who has  never been to Goa , I would highly recommend that you plan your solo trip and experience not only the Goan food but also the Goan culture. Not only are there famous beaches and restaurants to explore, but also a lot of  hidden gems  that not a lot of people know about. And if you have already travelled to Goa, do let me know about your experiences in the comments section, as I would love to read them.

A Complete 7-day Itinerary and Guide to Goa for First Timers

This guide to Goa is perfect for those of you planning to travel there for the first time, as it talks about the best time to visit, how to reach Goa, popular beaches in North and South Goa, where to stay for your first visit, and how to get around. Also included is Goa itinerary for 7 days.

Goa is a tropical paradise with endless white and golden-sand beaches lined with swaying palm trees. This small state in the southwestern region of India is unlike any other, with its laid-back culture balanced by its thriving nightlife. But that’s not all there is to Goa. It is a land of soothing bike rides, fascinating world heritage sites, plush resorts, friendly hostels, delectable seafood, and various forms of spiritual practices. It is definitely the most popular destination in India amongst Indian and international travellers (after the Taj Mahal, of course), as it has something for everyone.

Guide to Goa For First Timers

What is the best time to visit goa.

pasture, low-land, buffaloes, Monsoon may not be the best time to visit Goa due to flooding

March-May : These are the summer months when Goa gets unbearably muggy, with temperatures touching 40ºC (104ºF).

June – September : During these monsoon months, Goa becomes lush green. It is relatively quieter than other months. Most shacks are temporary structures that are dismantled during this period and water sports aren’t going on. But this is a charming time in Goa overall, with plenty of restaurants and activities to keep you entertained.

November–February : Winter is the peak season here. Goa, being a coastal area, is balmy while the inland parts of the country go through typical winter temperatures. The sun is always out and the cool sea breeze blows through from time to time. December is the busiest month as Goa hosts the Annual Sunburn Music Festival, which attracts people from all over. Plus, people flock in to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s holidays at this party destination.

Verdict: For your first time in Goa, you should visit during the season, Mid-October to Mid-March , so that you can see all that Goa has to offer. The shacks will be open, beach stays will be available in South Goa and the weather will be pleasant. However, the prices will be higher than any other time of the year.

How to reach Goa?

How to reach Goa? Have a fun time in a train

Goa’s international airport is situated at Dabolim, near Vasco Da Gama, and there is also a new airport in North Goa, Manohar International Airport. You can land at either of these and hire a taxi to your hotel/hostel.

While most cities in India have an organised cab service like Uber and Ola, Goa has  GoaMiles  ( now also an app) that can pass for Goa’s very own Uber. We’ve used it a few times and found cabs at a good rate. You can also opt for the taxis lined up on the road outside the airport (be prepared to bargain and ensure to set prices before the start of the trip) or prepaid taxi stands at airports that have a set price. You can always ask at your accommodation if they provide airport transfers but these might turn out to be more expensive.

Local buses in Goa are significantly cheaper but also very inconvenient, as you would have to change multiple vehicles to get to your destination in Goa. Use the local bus only if you’re on a super low budget.

Bus, Cab and Car

You can also opt to reach Goa by overnight bus or cab from major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad in India. If travelling by bus, Mapusa would be your de-boarding point for North Goa , Panjim for Central , and Margao/Canacona for South .

You can book your bus via Redbus .

We’ve driven it down from Pune a few times now and once from Hyderabad. The road is full of potholes as you get closer to Goa. But you’ll cross ghats and waterfalls. It is beautiful!

Goa is also well connected by train to the rest of India. The main train stations are Vasco da Gama (central), Margao (south) and Thivim (north) .

Which area to stay in Goa?

A fairly empty Baga Beach - One of the popular beaches in North Goa

Goa is divided into North and South Goa, with its capital, Panaji (popularly known as Panjim), located around the centre. For your first time in Goa, it can be confusing to decide where to stay, as different corners of the state offer different experiences. In this itinerary, you’ll be staying in both North Goa and South Goa .

Baga, Calangute, Candolim or Anjuna : This is a good option for your first time in Goa, as the area is very central, so all places to see would be close to you.

However, please note that these beaches aren’t best, as they’re the most popular in Goa. Every Tom Dick and Harry visit these beaches so the crowd is also such. However, your purpose of staying around this area is different. You’re here to enjoy the water sports, the parties, the food and maybe even shop a little.

A little further north is Anjuna. While it is not the best location to stay for this itinerary, this area has come up a lot in the past few years, so you’ll find a lot of  must-visit restaurants in Goa  around this area.

Stay Options:

Casa Cenica (2BHK in Arpora) Onastay  (2BHK in Candolim) Casa De Mezzanine (Beautiful 1BHK in Arpora) Jade by CasaFlip (2BHK in Anjuna) Beach Villa With Private pool (luxury) Canary By CasaFlip (1BHK in Anjuna).

Palolem or Agonda: For your first trip to South Goa, you should stay at one of these two beaches and explore other beaches nearby. These beaches have restaurants but yet maintain a relaxed vibe so you can enjoy time on the beach. Remember that you should only stay in South Goa beaches beach from October to March as the huts and shacks are mostly dismantled before the monsoons and built back up when the monsoons get over. Click to  know more about South Goa Beaches .

Stay Options: Jardim-a-Mar (Agonda Beach- I’ve stayed here twice) Simrose (Agonda Beach – this one is often open all-year round) Agonda Serenity Beach Villa (has a jacuzzi on porch at Agonda Beach) Agonda Island View (Agonda Beach) BunkNBrew (hostel in Palolem)

How to get around Goa?

Palolem Beach - One of the popular beaches in South Goa

Taxis are expensive in Goa and not ideal for getting around and sightseeing. Buses are quite cheap but again, inconvenient. Instead, opt for a scooter or motorbike for the duration of your stay in Goa. There is no better way to get around, as it will give you the utmost freedom. The best bit is that it is inexpensive at about Rs. 500–800 a day, depending on the season (off-season or peak), type of bike (scooters like Honda Activa, low-end bikes like Bajaj Pulsar or high-end ones, like Royal Enfield) and your haggling skills.

If you don’t want to ride a bike or moped, you can hire a car . Most offer stick shifts so if you don’t know how to drive these, finding an automatic may not be easy. However, we have always managed to find one and so should you. Economy cars usually cost about Rs. 1000–1200 per day but may go up depending on the season.

You can get a bike or car on hire easily by talking to your accommodation host or hotel.

The perfect 1 week Goa Itinerary: North and South Goa

The Goa experience is different for every individual depending on their style of travel. It’s never a one size fits all because there is simply so much to see and do. We have stayed in Goa for 2 months and have yet not seen it all. Your personalised Goa itinerary would largely depend on what you enjoy – nature, culture, beaches, partying, etc. In this 7-day Goa itinerary, we’ve tried to include a bit of everything so you can get a true feel of the different sides of Goa and decide for yourself which aspect of Goa you enjoy the most!

Day 1-2 North Goa – Watersports, Shopping, Partying

Stay near the Baga Beach/ Arpora area. Despite being crowded, it is close to a lot of North Goa tourist spots you’ll be visiting. And also, hire a scooty, bike or car. You’ll need it to get around. Prior reservations for restaurants are needed!

Day 1: Beach, Water sports, Party

Visit Baga Beach during your first time in Goa

  • Reach Goa and check into your hotel or Airbnb
  • Rent a vehicle
  • Calangute Beach for lunch at Pousada by the Beach
  • Water sports and sunset at Baga Beach
  • At night go partying at Hammerz (popular music) in the Baga Area or Las Olas (Bollywood music) at Baga Beach. Or both as they’re close by! Start at Hammerz and end at Las Olas.

Day 2: Cliffside Restaurants, Fort, Sundowner, Party

You don’t need to do all of these things mentioned below. Select the ones you wish to do based on your preferences and how much time you have. I’d recommend not partying till late this night so you can be fresh to explore Goa the next morning.

Antares View Goa

  • Wake up late this day since you’ve partied the previous night
  • Lunch:   Titlie OR Antares OR Casa Playa at Little Vagator or Felix OR Artjuna or Vinayak at Anjuna.
  • Shop: Now go shop at Anjuna Flea Market!
  • Explore Chapora Fort (The movie ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was shot here so expect it to be crowded)
  • Stay for sunset or go for a sundowner to Thalassa closeby
  • Dinner at Ida in Vagator
  • Party at one of the following – Soro (Siolim) or Romeo Lane (Little Vagator).

Day 3-4: North Goa – Culture, Heritage and Nature

Day 3: culture and heritage.

Head for a day trip to Panjim and Old Goa . On this day, you’ll get a good glimpse of Portuguese influence on Goan heritage.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

Old Goa Churches : Start with Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the following churches in this order:

  • St. Augustine Church Ruins
  • Basilica of Bom Jesus (the most renowned)
  • Convent of Santa Monica and The Museum of Christian Art (optional but good)
  • Se Cathedral
  • Church of St. Cajetan
  • Viceroy’s Arch
  • Our Lady of Mount Chapel (optional- for panoramic views of the Panjim area)

Ruins of the Chuch of St. Augustine is a fantastic spot to add to your Goa itinerary

Going on a tour will help you make the most of your time and understand the significance of Old Goa and its churches. It is highly recommended. We’ve taken several tours by this company and loved all of them.

Lunch : Head for either a local Goan lunch at Kokni Kanteen or Cafe Al Fresco By Cantina Bodeg a for continental food. Both are close to your next stop.

Fontainhas : After lunch, take a walk in Fontainhas, Asia’s largest Latin Quarter, which has lanes lined with houses built in the colonial style and painted in bright shades of red, yellow, green, and blue. We highly recommend seeing this area on a Latin Quarter walking tour; only then will you truly be able to appreciate the history and architecture. However, if you don’t wish to take a tour, start your walk at Maruti Mandir or Phoenix Springs, ending at the Church of Immaculate Conception. See the colourful houses, click a lot of photos at the colourful wall of Old Quarter Hostel, buy some Azulejo tile décor at Velha Goa Galleria, admire the white façade of St. Sebastian Chapel, and have some bebinca (Goan Dessert) at Confeitaria 31 De Janeiro .

food trip goa

Evening: Get drinks and small bites at Antonio@31 or head for a full-fledged dinner at Black Sheep Bistro . Please check the prices of these restaurants beforehand to see if they fit your budget and make reservations beforehand. You could also go for a fun Pub Crawl instead.

Night: Later you could head to a Deltin Royale Casino (buy tickets online for the best deals) OR go back home to rest for an early morning the next day.

Book Tours in Goa

Day 4: Nature and Heritage

Chorao Island and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary : Do this either on a tour or go by yourself. You’ll have to take a ferry from Ribandar. Don’t miss the famous Mangrove Broadwalk. It is beautiful. We haven’t been here yet but can’t wait to go!

Lunch: Lazy Goose , Nerul. Reserve the table with the lake view if you can.

Depending on the time you start the day, see one/two of the following attractions. Choose one museum and one fort:

  • Houses of Goa Museum (do this only after a walking tour of Fontainhas; otherwise, nothing will make any sense) OR Museum of Goa (modern art tinged in Goan history).
  • Aguada Fort (great for sunsets but crowded) OR Reis Magos Fort (relatively less known and beautiful).

Reis Magos Fort is a hidden gem in North Goa.

Have dinner in the Candolim, Calangute, or Baga area. There are plenty of good restaurants.

A Reverie : Fine Dining Toro Toro : Continental/Goan Yazu – Pan Asian Beach Club: Asian

Day 5-6: South Goa – Beaches and relaxation

Day 5: spice plantations, iconic restaurants, relaxation.

Now, head to South Goa. Stay at Agonda or Palolem Beach- both are fantastic beaches for your first time in Goa.

But on your way, you have the option of making a few stops.

Visit Spice Plantations- A top suggestion for our Goa Travel Guide Blog

  • Sahakari Spice Plantation: Wonder why the Portuguese were so fascinated by Goa? The answer lies in the tantalising smell and flavours of spices like Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Allspice, Cumin, etc. See how these spices grow and learn about them. End with a local buffet lunch at the plantation. I found the experience very interesting and learned a lot. You can buy the ticket on reaching there.
  • Iconic Restaurants: If you’re not in the mood for the above, stop at Martin’s Corner or Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch. They are both very renowned.

Check into your hotel and use this day to do nothing and just relax on the beach, see the sunset, etc. Otherwise, you could also choose to head to Sundowner Palolem (Bar) for a sundowner!

Day 6: Beaches and Viewpoints

Today is going to be a long day of beach hopping.

Cola Beach: Start your day at Cola Beach. It’s a bit of a hike down to the beach. You can even take the jeep to the beach to save time and effort but it’ll cost a bit. Cola Beach is famous for its lagoon, where you can swim and kayak. You can have lunch here before heading to your next stop.

Kakolem Beach: This beach has a waterfall. Yes, you read that right. ( you can skip this beach if you’re running short on time or want to take it a bit slow).

Cabo De Rama Fort and Cabo De Rama Viewpoint for sunset . Both are gorgeous spots with fantastic views – you’ll love the sunset here. You can also choose to have a meal and drink at the Cape Goa restaurant near the viewpoint before heading back to your hotel.

Day 7: Butterfly Beach and Palolem/Agonda Beach

Agonda Beach in South Goa

  • Butterfly Beach : It’s a beautiful secluded beach. You can hike it to the beach or go via boat but I’ll suggest going as early as possible to avoid crowds.
  • Palolem/Agonda Beach : For lunch head to either of these beaches that you’re not staying at. At Palolem, you can have lunch at Dropadi by the beach and at Treetop Tava or Zest (vegan cafe) at Agonda. Walk around the beach later afterwards.

Depart for home this evening or the next morning!

But do not forget to book your tours in goa before you get there!

Tips to Stay Safe in Goa

This guide to Goa would be incomplete if I didn’t mention tips to stay safe there. Goa is really welcoming and local-friendly. But because it is a  thriving party location and has people travelling from all over, you should take care of the following, especially if you’re a woman.

  • Don’t hitchhike.
  • If you’re a woman travelling solo, preferably rent a car. If you’re a woman travelling in a group, bikes will do.
  • Always get a video of the vehicle hired to avoid being ripped off on returning the vehicle.
  • Don’t go out with people you don’t know and never go to parties alone.
  • Watch your drink.
  • Try to stay vigilant, even when drunk.
  • Some Indian men can assume friendliness as flirting.
  • Be cautious of theft at your accommodation. Huts can easily be broken into.
  • Drugs are available abundantly in Goa. Avoid getting stuck in the middle of a drug racket.
  • Avoid drunk driving. It is being monitored by the police more strictly than before.

Don’t let these scare you. I (Trisha) have  travelled solo to Goa  and also with my girlfriends and had an absolutely fantastic time. Most of these tips should be adhered to anywhere in the world. Here is a complete list of  ways to stay safe while travelling alone .

Wrapping up

Goa is a place that you can never get enough of. With each visit, you discover something new – a secret beach, a quaint café, a shack with amazing music, a magnificent fort, and so on. We have visited Goa about five times for short periods – with different people, as different people in different phases of our lives, or wanting something different from our trip- and Goa has never let us down. We are sure you will be taken by the charm of Goa and not want to leave just like the hippies in their heydays. Hope you found this Goa Travel Blog useful and have an amazing first trip to Goa. A Foodie’s Guide to South Goa… The Best Restaurants for Every Budget!

Want to know one of the best things about South Goa? Delicious, diverse and budget food options down every street and tucked away corner. But, due to shear the number of options available, it can be all too easy to get caught up in the tourist spots where you’ll get less for your money. I’ve put together this guide for the true foodies out there looking to make the most of their trip. In this guide, you’ll find the best restaurants in South Goa suited to every budget.

food trip goa

After 3-months of living in the luscious green and blue surroundings of Goa last year, I had a moment or two to sample Goa’s vibrant food scene. Rooted by Hindu origins, Portuguese colonisation and Muslim rule, Goa’s diverse history is reflected in its fresh seafood, Indian flavours and spicy cuisine. You can really have it all in Goa!

A Foodie’s Guide to South Goa: The Best Restaurants for Every Budget

So, in the spirit of research (of course) and with more time on my hands due to the coronavirus, I set out to discover amazing dishes for all budgets and combine the best here. My personal foodie’s guide here shares my top restaurants for every budget in South Goa, and specific dishes you must try!

food trip goa

£££- Top-end restaurants (that won’t break the bank)

Let’s start at the top. A heads up, my best restaurant recommendations with the three ‘£££’ signs in South Goa really means anything between 800-1200 rupees (£8-£12) per head! With this budget, you can easily fill your stomach with a generous 2-course meal and a drink.

1. Avocado Garden, Palolem/Patnem

With a peaceful vibe away from the main road, you’ll find lovely seafood and fresh dishes at Avocado Garden . Attached to a hotel, service is fast and the food is nothing short of quality! Fresh and seasoned fish is a must-try, but you will also find a range of delicious healthy salads and thalis for a little more than average prices.

best food in south goa

*Top recommendation- a fresh tuna steak with chips and greens*

food trip goa

2. Ciaran’s, Palolem beachfront

Ciaran’s restaurant brings sunset views on the beach, authentic Goan flavours and generous banana milkshakes! Primarily a guesthouse, its jungle huts and leafy settings surround a stunning sea-facing restaurant. They offer live music nights and an exquisite menu dedicated to authentic Goan flavours.

food trip goa

For a light lunch, I enjoyed my favourite, a delightful fresh tuna and mayonnaise sandwich (which tastes- um, so good!) But their speciality being a light and aromatic Goan prawn curry will cost you just 320 rupees. The service can be a little slow here at times, however, the sea views and lovely banana milkshakes make up for it while you wait!

food trip goa

3. Magic Italy, Palolem

For the best Italian in India!

Need I say more, Magic Italy is well known for its authentic Italian flavours and thin-crust pizzas. With meats and cheeses imported from Italy, this authentic family-run restaurant quickly became my go-to treat.

best food in south goa

Alongside the delicious beef ragu and creative daily specials, my solid favourite here was the Salame Milano with added green chilli (of course). I’m a pizza foodie any day, but this place easily won the top spot for the best pizza I had in India. To be honest, it probably stands in my top-five pizzas ever .

4. Cow Corner, Patnem

One word… Quality.

Cow Corner is a long-running firm favourite amongst travellers and locals alike. With weekly live music at their luscious green indoor and outdoor dining spaces, you will enjoy a fusion of lively and peaceful vibes.

food trip goa

Here you will find nothing but a quality mixture of cuisines from across the world. Prices are higher, but my delicious calamari spaghetti was well worth it. My top tip is to check out their Facebook to keep up with live events to enjoy. And delve into a truly great evening.

food trip goa

££- Mid-range spots for everyone

My best restaurants in the mid-range category in South Goa will cost you anything between 4-800 rupees per person (£4-8) for 2 dishes and a beer. Go with the flow and enjoy each one of these exciting dining options on your next trip to Goa.

Mollu’s, Palolem

best food in south goa

A local delight, just a stone’s throw from the beachfront! A 20-minute stroll or 3-minute scooter ride from Palolem’s centre will take you to one of Goa’s most authentic restaurants. Full of local South Indians, Mollu’s serves a banquet of sensational Goan flavours at sweet prices.

My TOP recommendation (although everything is delicious) would be their spicy full tandoori chicken, daal fry and paneer butter masala dish to share between two. I regularly ate here during my 3 months stay in Goa, and pretty much got this selection every time! Accompanied by white rice and chapatis it hits the spot perfectly!

food trip goa

2. Cherry Olive, Palolem

A firm favourite, I enjoyed a mixture of genuinely good Indian and Western food at Cherry Olive . Funnily enough, after 7 months of strong and flavour-filled Indian dishes, I was missing that little bit of home. To which Cherry Olive filled that void with their lovely steak and onion pie (which I couldn’t believe was actually so good).

food trip goa

I also became a big fan of their fish thalis serving a different variety of flavour every day. I can also highly recommend their generous puri bhaji in the mornings and cheaper (than Magic Italy) but still quality pizzas!

3. Palolem Beach Resort’s Restaurant, Palolem

Biriyani, beach and a beer, what more could you ask for?

best food in south goa

Located at the forefront of the main Palolem strip, you’ll find this popular spot on the immediate right facing the beach. Honestly, this was my go-to for a fragrant, spicy and generous chicken biriyani. With lively vibes and a beer for <500 rupees, you’ll enjoy an authentic and budget-friendly meal with a view!

food trip goa

Tip: I would not recommend their fish dishes. We found ours to be small and overpriced. Much better at my next recommendation!

4. Baba’s Little Italy, Palolem

Located on the main Palolem strip, Baba’s Little Italian offers great vibes in their energy and customer service. I loved this vibrant spot. Each time we visited they aimed to please, even going to the lengths of contacting their local fisherman when we were craving tuna!

best food in south goa

We enjoyed this generous whole tandoori lemon and garlic seabass, chips and salad over a candlelit dinner. And, paid less than 1000rupees for the 2 of us! However, I was less impressed by their pizzas due to the deep pan style, but they also offer great Indian dishes for average prices.

£- Budget-Friendly Authenticity

For the budget-keepers! My recommendations in this category will easily fill you up on 200rs per person for a selection of dishes and a drink! Keeping in my daily budget of 500rs, I attended most of these spots daily. And enjoyed ridiculously good food at a ridiculously low price! See below for my best:

1. Sari Krupa, Palolem

food trip goa

A breakfast must-have on your list! Sai Krupa became my favourite for a quick and tasty breakfast dosa. Run by a local family on Palolem’s main road, mama serves up authentic and homestyle Goan cooking with a smile. My top recommendation is 100 percent a spicy masala dosa (80rs) with a chai or banana milkshake. But their thalis are also quality and reasonably priced.

food trip goa

2. Hotel Purvi, Chaudi

After a day trip out on scooters, we stumbled across Hotel Purvi on our way back through Chaudi. Not expecting much, we just wanted to fill our stomachs. But wow, were we impressed- this had to be added to the best restaurants in South Goa list!

food trip goa

Due to its location away from the beach, Hotel Purvi offers authentic Goan dishes at rock bottom prices. Best to catch a tuk-tuk or hitchhike a scooter into Chaudi, and enjoy the home-style cooking by the lovely local family here. A personal favourite for me: Kadai Paneer with white rice and chapati! Per person, you’ll pay roughly 200rs (£2) for a full stomach!

food trip goa

3. Vithal’s Tasty Food Corner, Agonda

One of my favourite budget food stops when I ventured away from Palolem. Vithal’s Food Corner a short stroll from the beach., offering generous and delicious food with quirky decor.

food trip goa

The vegetable thalis offer spicy flavours including the most delicious pumpkin thali. Run by a Nepalese man, here you can also enjoy quality momos and thupka, this place became a go-to whenever I was in Agonda.

You may struggle to find Vithals tasty food corner as it is not clearly on Google Maps. So, if you’re in Agonda lookout for it close to Cupid heaven guesthouse and opposite Romya bakery on Agonda high street.

4. Ceasars, Patnem

Ceasars in Patnem is a cosy spot for a fusion of yummy Italian and Goan food. With floor-seated dining and friendly customer service, their bohemian vibes are perfect for a quiet meal.

food trip goa

It’s hard to find good north Indian food in South India, so I was happy to stop by this place one morning and find this filling aloo paratha (which resembled a pizza). Also satisfying is the creamy spinach and ricotta ravioli with a fresh and tasty rose sauce. But, maybe a little too much sauce!

And Finally, The Best Dessert in South Goa:

Tide Exotic’s banoffee pie!

As I struggled to find a good dessert in Goa- I had to share the banoffee pie at Tide Exotic. Stumbling across this cute and chilled spot on the seafront was a blessing as their banoffee pie for 220rs did not let me down!

food trip goa

Planning a trip to Goa? I would love if you utilised this guide to try some of the best dishes I found in Goa and share any specials you discover!

To summarise…

My best restaurants in South Goa are diverse and exciting, I really recommend you try all! You will find that a lot the food can be very same samey at slightly different prices. Hence why I really wanted to share some of the best food I discovered in South Goa and add specific dishes in this genuine foodies guide. Personally, I found the most authentic restaurants were the cheaper spots away from the beach. But, for me as a long term traveller in South Goa, I was so happy to have the option of all different cuisines on my doorstep!

Table of contents.

The Cuisine in Goa exhibits a high dominance of vibrant flavors and spices. You will find the food highly influenced by Goa situated on India’s West Coast and Arabian Sea’s shores. The dominance of seafood precedes the dominance of spices and flavors. The most commonly found kinds of seafood in Goa’s famous food are tuna, prawns, shark, pomfret, etc. Food in Goa has to incorporate one of these ingredients; pork, meat, coconut, rice, etc. If you want to know about some of the best food in Goa, read this article ahead!

During Goa’s colonization, the Catholic Portuguese were the ones to introduce Prawn Balchao into Goan Cuisine. You should try this Goa famous food to acknowledge its roots in Goan Portuguese Cuisine. Prawn is the main ingredient in making this spicy delight, almost pickle-like. The mixed style of masala (spices) like red chilies (dried) and cumin is very commonly used in Balchao. The hot-sweet-sour flavor of this cuisine makes it the traditional food of Goa. You will find vinegar adding a tinge of sourness to the Balchao.

How is it served?

The dish is best served with Rice or bread of your choice.

2.Chicken Xacuti

food trip goa

Kashmiri Red chilies and poppy seeds are combined to make this tasteful Goa Special Food. This dish is inclined toward Portuguese food. As an Indian Cuisine,  Chicken Xacuti’s gravy is made thicker using ground dried coconut instead of flour. The gluten-free nature makes the dish more desirable.

This dish hosts many exotic spices like poppy seeds, Kashmiri Lal chili, maize flower, and aniseeds. The curry is an amalgamation of flavors like coconuts, chicken, onions, etc. Your platter will be filled with delight having this traditional food of Goa on it!

Chicken Xacuti is best eaten when served hot, accompanied with rice or bread.

Poee is a simple and sweet dish. Poee is bread-like and is made using Maida, Whole Wheat flour, and wheat bran. This bread holds popularity in Goa as the bread is sold in the morning hours. They are a product commonly found in every Gon bakery. You can also grab this bread on the streets if you are a morning person. The dry yeast activity is utilized to manufacture these loaves of bread.

4.Vindaloo

food trip goa

Vindaloo has been a traditional food of Goa for a long time now. This curry with a proportioned sweet and sour taste is traditionally called Goan Pork Vindaloo. It was served during New Year, Christmas and Easter. Now you’ll find its taste has changed to hot and spicy. This magic occurs by adding garlic, red chilies, and ginger to the curry. This makes the now Vindaloo tangy and spicy.

This famous food is best served when sided with Naan bread, rice, potatoes, chapatis, or wraps.

Sorpotel is another famous meat-made food from Goa. The meat is made to undergo parboiling while the fats are fried to cook Sorpotel.  ‘Soro’ is a Konkani word that translates to alcohol or liquor. Sorpotel (also known as sarapatel) is a famous food in Goa. The meat is parboiled, and the fat is fried.

There is no restriction on consuming Sorpotel at the hour of your choice. Most people have it for breakfast. This is prepared using mutton, pork, or beef liver. A company of herbs and spices, garlic and onion, are also added to the dish.

The best side served for this dish are poee, sanna, steamed rice, chapati, or sweet bread.

6.Chicken Cafreal

food trip goa

The Chicken Cafreal dish also has Portuguese origins. The signature recognition for this dish has to be the thick dry sauce. It is made by marinating and cooking spices and herbs. This makes a flavourful coat around the chicken with considerable thickness. This is a traditional dish of Goa. You can enjoy it during Christmas and other celebrations of such importance.

The best companions for chicken cafreal are bread, potatoes, and rice.

Sorak, the vegetarian curry, is to be the talk of the town during monsoons. Tomatoes in onions are used with a spicy masala for this curry. The main ingredient for the curry is coconut. This curry exhibits balanced flavors of tang, spice, and cream.

It is served best with steamed rice, poee, and potatoes.

8. Goan Nevri

These are flour-made sweet balls. Cardamom, sugar, coconut, and almonds are stuffed into these balls. This is usually popular during the days of Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi in Goa. Karanji, when not fried and steamed, are called Nevri. They will satisfy both your health and taste.

They are usually served for breakfast and snacks. Can be paired with tea or any drink of your choice.

Spongy and steamed rice cakes, also known as idli in India, are called Sanna. They are often paired with various curries, chicken sukka, sorpotel, and pork vindaloo. A sweeter version of Sana is also made. It is made by utilizing unrefined palm or cane sugar.

You can enjoy your Sana with stir-fries, and curries and even eat it alone.

10.Goan Fish Curry

food trip goa

The Goan Fish Curry is made rich in coastal flavors. It is tangy, warm, and spicy. The creamy texture comes into the curry from the coconut sauce. Tamarind is responsible for the tangy taste of this spicy curry.

Sometimes the tang in the dish is all thanks to the raw mango used. Kingfish and pomfret are the main ingredients for the Goan fish curry.

Your taste buds are in for a treat with go-on fish curry served alongside steamed rice.

Patolea is among the sweet dishes in the Traditional Food of Goa. The main ingredients for the dish are tamarind leaves and red rice (Goan). The leaves are first bound with rice paste. These tamarind leaves are now stuffed with cardamom jaggery and coconut fillings. Once folded into wraps, these leaves are exposed to steam for 30 minutes to make Patolea.

It is usually consumed alongside tea. Its amazing taste can be fathomed only when served warm.

12.Feijoada

Feijoada is known for its thickness. You will find it a perfect amalgamation of spicy and tangy flavors. The gravy, for ingredients, uses pork or beef sausages and red kidney beans.

‘Feijão,’ i.e., beans, is the Portuguese word that Feijoada derives its name from. The Portuguese again influence this recipe. Instead of water, the gravy is added with coconut milk.

Goan feijoada is best served with poee or rice.

13.Prawns Xeque Xeque

A uniquely flavored prawn dish of exotic nature is Prawns Xeque Xeque. The juicy prawns in the dish add to its lavish nature. The flavors in the dish are bold and strong, but mildness in spice is still maintained.

This dish brings you fresh prawns, garlic, onions, coconut milk, chilies, tomatoes, and other spices of importance.

The gradual addition of coconut milk adds the necessary balance to the dish’s flavors.

It is complemented by side dishes like Goan Speciality; Sannas, South Indian Speciality; Dosa, and East Indian Speciality; Fugias.

14.Shark Ambot Tik

food trip goa

Ambot and Tik are words derived from Konkani. One stands for sour or tangy (Ambot) and the other for spicy or hot (tik). Shark Ambot Tik, is a tangy curry made of shark. Shark is the most widely chosen option among fishes for this curry.

This curry is for you if you prefer a well-balanced mixture of sour and spicy. Spice to the curry is added with Red chilies, and kokum adds the sour taste.

The shark Ambot curry is best complemented with steamed/boiled rice, pao, sannas, etc.

15.Samarachi Kodi

A dish of monsoons can be another well-known address for Samarachi Kodi. It is a prawn curry mostly prepared during Monsoon.

Ingredients like onion, coconut, and dry prawns with tomatoes and tamarind brought together with spices make this tasteful curry.

The masala made for this curry is spiced up and tangy. Typical Goan texture and flavor are provided to the curry by adding coconut milk.

The dish’s taste is enhanced by being served with pickles and rice (hot).

Goa’s rich heritage can be seen through the diverse yet united Food in Goa. The Traditional Food of Goa speaks volumes of history with its taste. This west coast has much more than the beaches to give people.

The seafood-dominated cuisine of Goa will never disappoint you. The Portuguese-influenced food available in Goa Famous Food is proof of Portuguese colonization. Goa has so much to give. You should enjoy some of the best traditional cuisines of Goa; book your Goa Tour packages with Thomas Cook . Food enthusiasts! Goa is your heaven on earth!

50 things to do in Goa right now

By Arundhati Ail

things to do in goa restaurants bars kids beach

Tis’ the season to be jolly—and for many, to plan that yearly Goa trip. Get to know the state a little differently this time around, there’s a lot more to it than you know. Here’s how you can eat, drink, walk, cycle, dive and surf your way through the sunshine state.

Dig into Christmas treats at Padaria Prazeres

Though Padaria Prazeres in Panjim is best known for its flakey pastéis de nata, it’s the Christmas treats you should look out for this time of year. The special festive menu has gingerbread cookies, Christmas cake, sticky toffee pudding, black forest berliners and cinnamon rolls, among other desserts. If you’re not sweet-toothed, drop in for a roast chicken and some eggnog.  Celeste Plaza, Ground floor, opposite Models Celebrity, Caranzalem, Panaji; Instagram

Goa Prices & Travel Costs

India’s most famous beach destination, Goa is a small state on the country’s west coast that draws in millions of foreign visitors each year. Consisting of about a dozen different beach communities that are mostly quite different from each other, Goa has something for almost everyone, but it is also important to do your research before you choose where to stay.

Is Goa Expensive or Cheap?

Goa isn’t a city, it’s a state of mind. It’s also a state in India, which contains several dozen small towns, many of which are along the beach and attract big numbers of tourists from November through March. Compared to most of the rest of India prices in Goa are relatively expensive, but compared to nearly anywhere else this place is a bargain.

Travel Costs to Goa

Accommodation costs in goa.

During the peak travel weeks from Christmas to New Years the prices do go up and hotels are packed so if your schedule is flexible that is the time to avoid, or be prepared to pay more. Still, hotels in Goa are cheap and fairly good standard for a beach resort area. Hotels at the bottom end of the range will be quite minimalistic though, so be prepared. Also, choose the city you stay in carefully. Some are more known for parties and others are more known for family holidays.

Goa Hotel Seasons

Hotels in Goa can have a fairly big shift between seasons. High season, which is when many Europeans and Israelis flock to the beaches here, is from November through March, with a major spike during the weeks around Christmas and New Years. During this peak season Goa hotels will often double or even triple their rates, and still most things get booked up, so if you are coming then it’s best to book early. During April and May it’s mostly domestic tourists, and from June through August the area is mostly empty due to the dramatic monsoon season.

Goa Hotel Prices

Goa hostels prices, goa attractions prices.

Most people come to Goa to relax on the beaches. There are some water sports and activities, but it’s not as well organized as many other Asian beach areas.

Honestly, there aren’t many major tourist sights in Goa so it’s really just about the beach culture during the day and the party culture in the evenings for most visitors.

Best tours in Goa

You can hire a taxi for the day to take you to some notable sights and the price will be very reasonable as long as you bargain.

Goa Food and Drink Prices

The main attractions are sitting around on the beach all day, and going to bars and clubs or even beach raves at night. All of it is either free or quite cheap, so once you get here you can get by on very little. Even the food and drinks at the many beach restaurants are in line with places in town, so having drinks and a meal on the beach is definitely a bargain compared to Europe.

Goa transport prices, getting to goa.

Dabolim airport (GOI) is Goa’s only major airport and it’s where most international visitors arrive. Taxis from the airport to the various beach areas all have fixed prices, but it’s still a good idea to book transfers in advance if you can.

There’s a major train station in the town of Margao and it has direct trains from Mumbai that either leave in the morning and arrive in the evening, or leave in the evening and arrive the following morning. They are popular for those who want to visit Mumbai on their way to Goa, but probably not worth the hassle if you are just trying to save a bit of money.

Getting around Goa

Goa’s main beach area are all little towns and are generally pedestrian friendly and mostly self contained. To get from the airport or train station to the beach areas you can take taxis or shuttle buses that all have fixed fares.

You can take taxis between towns as well and they are cheap, though you might have to haggle a bit.

When to visit Goa

Temperature and rainfall, goa weather advice.

The weather averages here are for the capital city of Panaji, which is slightly inland, so beach temperatures might be a bit lower. The weather is very pleasant and dry during the main travel season from December through April, although it is fairly humid even with no rainfall. In April things really heat up, and in June the monsoon season begins with awesome amounts of rainfall, which last through mid August. It’s really better to avoid visiting during those months unless you are coming specifically to see rain and flooding.
