Paul McCartney | Got Back 2023 – Everything you need to know!

No more lonely nights.

Paul McCartney will bring his acclaimed  Got Back  Tour to Australia this October!

These dates will see McCartney return for his first live performances in Australia in six years. McCartney was last in Australia in December 2017 (which saw him win a Helpmann Award for Best International Contemporary Concert in 2018 beating the likes of Ed Sheeran), wowing audiences nationwide with a near three-hour show, the Sydney Morning Herald reporting,  “If the greatest songs elicit an emotional response too powerful to properly explain, it’s safe to say no review of Paul McCartney’s tour will quite do it justice.”

Wondering how to get tickets? Here’s everything you need to know!

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Paul McCartney tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Paul McCartney plays the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on 18 October on the first night of his Got Back tour around Australia.

Paul McCartney’s Australian comeback tour awash with love, Lennon tributes and Beatles medleys

Adelaide Entertainment Centre The former Beatle delves deep into his songbook for three hours of humour, pyrotechnics and ‘sweet memories’

“W hen we were kids, you couldn’t really say to each other that you loved each other,” Paul McCartney reflects midway through the first show of his Australian tour. “You tried to be hard, young guys. We never got around to it really.”

For a musician whose back catalogue is, famously, not short of love songs, it’s a poignant reflection: while the Beatles were conquering the world with pop ditties like Love Me Do and Can’t Buy Me Love – both of which we’ll hear tonight – in their prime they never quite articulated the deep, life-changing bond between them. And what else could you call it but love?

Half a century later, in his first set in Adelaide in 30 years, he’s making up for lost time. On his seven-date Got Back tour McCartney is due to play some of Australia’s biggest arenas, but has opted to start it off with a relatively small and very sold-out 8,000-capacity show: the first Australian city he ever played is a gentle setting for his first live appearance since Glastonbury over a year ago .

Eighty-one years old, spry and light on his feet, McCartney and his longtime band get some Wings stuff out of the way early, McCartney holding it down on bass while his comrades shred on guitar and horns. There’s a twinkle in his eye, an old hand still hooked on the formula of a few mates, some guitars, some drums and a stage.

It’s during Let ’Em In from 1976’s Wings at the Speed of Sound, that something happens that feels so surreal it provokes an almost physical response: McCartney throws his head back and wails, “Yeah, yeah, yeah”. You know what I mean. It’s a sound ingrained in pop culture, tested out in Liverpool living rooms, shaped in noisy Hamburg nightclubs and belted over the screams of girls and maybe a few boys in stadiums whose public announcement systems were no match for the sheer volume of Beatlemania.

Paul McCartney performing at Adelaide Entertainment Centre

A few other moments approach it: McCartney’s fingers nimbly picking out a rubbery bassline on that well-loved old Höfner. Those same fingers plucking out the melodic runs of Blackbird that every aspiring high school guitarist tries to nail and, according to McCartney, fails. (“How many people here tried to learn Blackbird?” he says. “And you got it wrong.”)

It isn’t all about the past, of course. McCartney intersperses songs such as Let Me Roll It, Got to Get You Into My Life and Maybe I’m Amazed with newer tracks and deep cuts. He and his band know which option crowds prefer: “When we play an old Beatles song the place lights up with all your phones, it’s like a galaxy of stars. When we play a new song … it’s like a black hole. But we play ’em anyway!”

As he revealed in a fan event the day before, this “hobby” of songwriting – a bottomless lucky dip pitting “skill” against “magic” – will never get old to him.

Some of the newer songs are, at least, not bad. Come On to Me from 2018’s Egypt Station packs an appropriate amount of horniness for an octogenarian, served with a wink and some nice organ on the chorus.

He has another laugh while trying to read signs held up in the crowd: “Sign my butt ? No no no!” Then, “Oh come on, let’s have a look at it.”

Midway through, a screen cuts the stage in half as McCartney and the band play a few stripped-back numbers before an image of a boarded-up old house. “Let’s hear it for a long time ago,” he says, before launching into an old skiffle track, the first thing the proto-Beatles recorded.

It’s at this point that he reflects about his love for his old friend, performing Here Today from 1982’s Tug of War. “I wrote this song after John died – let’s hear it for John,” he says, before singing: “I am holding back the tears no more, I love you.”

Later, a weathered ukulele signals another tribute. “This one was given to me by George,” he says, launching into a jaunty music hall take on Something. It’s lovely.

A thick succession of rolled-gold classics rounds out the first three hours. Live and Let Die features flames and pyrotechnics you might expect from an AC/DC concert, while a medley of medleys (You Never Give Me Your Money turns into Band On the Run) is an unexpected delight – he’s never played the former in Australia before.

In the encore, McCartney reprises the Peter Jackson-assisted redux of I’ve Got a Feeling that he showed off at Glastonbury, with McCartney duetting with footage of Lennon filmed on the Abbey Road rooftop before it all fell apart. I expected to cringe at this digital resurrection, enabled by AI tech that seems poised to undermine the creative spark, the very human spark, upon which all this is built. But it’s quite moving. “So amazing to be singing along with John again,” Paul says. “Sweet memories.”

They then finish the rest of the Abbey Road medley, Golden Slumbers right through to The End. As McCartney sings about carrying that weight, it hits differently than it did in those sessions, the band barely keeping it together for one last ride. His voice is a little shaggier, his mop a little greyer, but it seems the past is a weight McCartney carries lightly – with love, remembrance and, occasionally, an ear-splitting “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!”

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney has his sights set on a return to Australia, for his first tour there in six years.

The evergreen octogenarian had promised “news coming soon” on his socials , and he delivers with the announcement of a new, Australian swing to his Got Back Tour , which will play two markets for the first time – the satellite cities of Newcastle (north of Sydney) and Gold Coast (south of Brisbane).

The two-time Rock And Roll Hall of Famer will embark on his run with an “intimate” date at Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Oct. 18, the only arena show on the itinerary. When McCartney and the Beatles played the South Australia capital in 1964, at the very peak of their powers, an estimated 350,000 people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the Fab Four. That’s roughly one-third the city’s current population.

The six-city stretch includes outdoor dates in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Perth misses out.

“I’ve got so many amazing memories of my time in Australia over the years,” McCartney comments in a statement, confirming the Australia leg. “Our last trip was so much fun. We had such an incredible time. Each show was a party so we know this is going to be incredibly special. Australia we are going to rock! I can’t wait to see you.”

Those memories and parties coalesced into a tour for the ages. Macca’s five-city One On One Tour won the Helpmann for best international contemporary concert in 2018, awarded by Live Performance Australia, and was declared a career highlight by legendary promoter Michael Gudinski, the late founder of Frontier Touring.

Joining McCartney on the road is his longtime band, Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums).

Following the release of Peter Jackson’s three-part 2021 documentary series The Beatles: Get Back , McCartney embarked on a 16-date U.S. run on his Got Back Tour , which last year nudged his total career gross north of the $1 billion mark , making him one of just 11 artists to surpass the 10-digit mark in Boxscore’s 30-year-plus history.

Here’s the set list Paul McCartney has played for his Got Back Tour, what Sydney crowds can expect

The music legend is hours away from rocking Sydney back through time for the weekend, and the jam-packed set list is all but nailed.

Sydney is hours away from going back in time with Sir Paul McCartney at Allianz Stadium on the latest stop of his Got Back Tour .

The 81-year-old singer-songwriter has already belted out three epic concerts for fans in Adelaide, Melbourne and Newcastle; and now it’s Sydney’s turn rock out with the music legend on Friday and Saturday night.

Sir McCartney has delighted fans in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Newcastle on his Got Back tour. Picture: David Crosling

McCartney has achieved the near-impossible: to whittle decades of hits, personal favourites, and fan favourites into one bang-on almost three-hour set list.

But, blimey, he’s done it: 32 songs, 160-minutes plus a seven song encore later.

There’s plenty of footage of the concerts floating around online, and the set list has remained rock solid since the North American tour ended about 16 months ago.

It means fans coming to the Sydney shows can be fairly certain which songs from McCartney’s solo, Wings, or Beatles catalogues they can practice to sing along to live, with Sir Paul this weekend.

But if you don’t want to know what’s in store, consider this your final warning: we’re about to reveal the setlist.

Imagine this is McCartney saying “Stop! Spoilers ahead!”. Picture: David Crosling

The Got Back Tour has opened every night with The Beatles’ 1964 classic Can’t Buy Me Love and every show has ended with The End – which is perhaps the only appropriate curtain closer, given it was the last song recorded by the band.

Throughout the tour, he has sprinkled in new songs, even if they’re not the ones the crowd wants to hear.

McCartney has joked in the past that he can tell which songs are fan favourites to be performed live, because the crowd literally lights up.

“When we play an old Beatles song the place lights up with all your phones, it’s like a galaxy of stars,” he said.

“When we play a new song … it’s like a black hole. But we play ’em anyway!”

McCartney is joined on the massive stage by his longtime touring band: guitarist Rusty Anderson, bassist/guitarist Brian Ray, pianist Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens, and drummer Abe Laboriel Jr.

He is even joined onstage (via one of the four big screens behind him) by his former Beatles bandmate John Lennon to kick off the encore with a moving virtual duet of The Beatles hit I’ve Got A Feeling .

McCartney opened up about the poignant moment in an interview ahead of the Australian leg of his tour, calling it one of his favourite parts of the show.

“It’s kind of magic for me, because at one point I’m just backing John up,” he said.

“And that’s beautiful because that’s like it was when you played live, you know, to be conscious of the other person, and do your part right alongside him.

“So yeah, it’s very emotional for me. I love it.”

If footage of the last concerts – and history, broadly – is anything to go by, McCartney fans can be guaranteed a raucous trip through the decades and down memory lane in what is no doubt going to be a concert for the ages.

Below is the setlist that McCartney has stuck to for every single show of the Got Back Tour and that Sydney fans can be near certain he’ll rock again on Friday and Saturday night – unless he decides to dig out some deep cuts and hits from the rest of his stellar songbook (which, realistically, would be entirely possible)

2. Junior’s Farm (Wings)

Some 70,000 people are expected to attend McCartney’s concerts across the two nights at Allianz Stadium, which is the cherry on top of a bumper event weekend in the city .

In typical Sydney fashion, ticketholders are being urged to “plan ahead, leave the car at home and catch public transport as on-site parking in Moore Park is very limited and heavy traffic is expected”.

More Coverage

Tickets to the concerts include travel on public transport to and from Moore Park, with frequent light rail services from the city and southeast.

“If you must drive, you’ll need to arrive early to secure a parking space as parking is limited and will fill quickly,” Transport NSW said. “Allow plenty of extra travel time and carpool with your group as traffic will be heavy, particularly on Friday night during the busy evening peak.”

The Australian leg of the Got Back Tour will finish in Queensland with one concert at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Wednesday, November 1 and his curtain call at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast on Saturday, November 4.

Paul McCartney, 81, Opens 2023 ‘Got Back’ Tour

Paul McCartney opens his 2023 tour, Adelaide, Australia (Photo via his Facebook page)

Paul McCartney returned to the concert stage on Wednesday (October 18, 2023) for his first concert of the year. The legend opened the new edition of his “Got Back” tour in Adelaide, Australia, his first of seven shows Down Under, with a 39-song set that spanned his Beatles, Wings and solo career.

McCartney launched the “Got Back” tour in February 2022, completing 16 shows across the U.S. before performing his final concert of that year at the Glastonbury festival in the U.K. on June 25. The setlist for the 2023 tour’s opening concert was almost identical to the ones he performed in 2022, with the notable addition of “She’s a Woman,” which he hadn’t played live since 2004.

“Let’s hear it for a long time ago,” said McCartney , as the band launched into “She’s a Woman.”

The 81 year-old announced the tour on July 31. It currently runs for 17 shows this year including dates in Mexico and Brazil. McCartney’s longtime band features Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums).

Twelve songs in came “Maybe I’m Amazed.”

He was last in Australia in December 2017 .

Around halfway through, McCartney began playing that familiar jaunty piano from “Lady Madonna.”

Toward the end of the main set, the band performed an “explosive” “Live and Let Die.”

As he did on the 2022 edition of the tour, as McCartney opened the encores with “I Got a Feeling,” while “performing” a duet with John Lennon via film footage on the screen behind the stage.

Tickets to see McCartney are available here  and here .

I said at the end of the last tour that I’d see you next time. I said I was going to get back to you. Well, I got back! Paul McCartney – From PaulMcCartney.com , February 18, 2022

From Wikipedia :

Got Back was a North American concert tour by English musician Paul McCartney, that started on 28 April 2022 and ended on 16 June 2022. The tour was McCartney’s first following the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in the cancellation of a planned European leg of his Freshen Up tour in 2020, which included a planned performance at Glastonbury Festival. McCartney performed at Glastonbury on Saturday 25 June 2022, following the conclusion of the Got Back tour. The setlist for Got Back, as with McCartney’s other concert tours as a solo artist, included songs by his former bands the Beatles and Wings, as well as songs from his solo career. In addition to McCartney, the tour band included Rusty Anderson on guitar, Brian Ray on guitar and bass, Paul “Wix” Wickens on keyboards, and Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums, along with the brass trio Hot City Horns. Originally planned for fourteen stops on the tour, a second date in both Oakland, California, and Boston were later added, for a total of sixteen concerts across the United States. Background The Got Back tour was McCartney’s first series of live shows since 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the final European leg of his previous tour in 2020, which included a planned performance at Glastonbury Festival as the final show. During the pandemic in 2020, McCartney recorded and released his 18th solo album, McCartney III . In 2021, the three-part documentary series The Beatles: Get Back , directed and produced by Peter Jackson, was released on Disney+. The series covers the making of the album Let It Be by McCartney’s former band the Beatles, utilizing footage and audio captured for a 1970 documentary film of the same name. The dates for the Got Back tour were announced on 18 February 2022. The tour was originally planned to have fourteen stops. On 25 February 2022, it was announced that a second concert would be held at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, on 8 June, in addition to the already-announced concert on 7 June. On 11 March, it was then announced that the concert planned for 6 May at Oakland Arena in Oakland, California, would be followed by a second concert in the same venue on 8 May (Mother’s Day), bringing the total number of planned stops on the tour to sixteen. Following the conclusion of the tour, McCartney headlined on Saturday night at the Glastonbury Festival on 25 June, in a 160-minute set, with special guests Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Overview The setlist for the Got Back tour consisted of over 30 songs, including songs by the Beatles and Wings, as well as songs from McCartney’s solo career. Each concert runs for around 2 hours and 40 minutes in length. The pre-show featured a scrolling video slide show of images of McCartney and the Beatles, culminating in an animated image of McCartney’s Höfner bass. The sixth song on the setlist was Wings’ “ Let Me Roll It “, which segued into a snippet of “ Foxy Lady ” as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. The ninth song on the setlist was “ My Valentine “, a song from McCartney’s solo career, which was accompanied by a video of Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp gesturing in sign language. The 16th song on the setlist, the Beatles’ “ Blackbird “, featured McCartney singing while playing acoustic guitar, elevated about six metres (20 feet) in the air, in front of a large LED display. “Blackbird” was followed by another acoustic performance, “ Here Today “, a song which McCartney wrote about his former Beatles bandmate John Lennon after Lennon’s murder in 1980. The 22nd song on the setlist, the George Harrison-penned “ Something “, began with McCartney playing a ukulele which Harrison gave to him. The 28th song on the setlist, Wings’ “ Live and Let Die “, involved the use of pyrotechnics, including flames and fireworks. The Spokesman-Review and The Dallas Morning News noted the absence of the Beatles song “ Back in the U.S.S.R. “, a usual staple of McCartney’s live concerts, from the setlist, in light of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Immediately preceding the encore at each stop on the tour, McCartney and his fellow band members left the stage and each returned with a flag: the flag of Ukraine, the flag of the United Kingdom, the flag of the United States, and an LGBT pride flag, as well as the state flag of whichever state the concert took place in (for example, the flag of Texas at the show in Fort Worth, Texas, and the flag of Florida at the show in Hollywood, Florida). The encore of the show was composed of the Beatles songs “ I’ve Got a Feeling “, “ Birthday “, “ Helter Skelter “, and “ Golden Slumbers “/” Carry That Weight “/” The End “. “I’ve Got a Feeling” was originally written and sung by McCartney and John Lennon and included on the Let It Be album. The performances of this song during the tour included a “video duet” between McCartney and Lennon, using footage restored for the Get Back documentary of Lennon performing the song with the Beatles during their 1969 rooftop concert. Jackson had isolated the vocals of Lennon after conceiving the idea of having Lennon “sing” along with McCartney and his live band; he told McCartney, “We can extract John’s voice, and he can sing with you,” to which McCartney replied, “Oh, yeah!” On the final stop of the tour, on 16 June at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, McCartney was joined on stage during the concert by New Jersey-born musicians Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. Springsteen, with McCartney and McCartney’s band, performed the Springsteen song “ Glory Days “, as well as the Beatles’ “ I Wanna Be Your Man “. During the show’s encore, Bon Jovi appeared on stage with balloons and sang “Happy Birthday” to McCartney, who turned 80 years old on 18 June. Springsteen returned during the final song, “The End”, playing guitar. Reception Reviewing the 13 May concert held at Inglewood, California’s SoFi Stadium, Chris Willman of Variety commended McCartney’s singing voice and made note of the show’s structure: “a rocking opening stretch highly reliant on ’70s rockers […] a partially acoustic, ‘Storytellers’-like magical history tour of the Beatles’ rise as the backbone of Act 2, […] and then, letting the third hour be birthday songs, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-ing and Abbey Road medley-izing. That structure indisputably works, and so, as part of a winning formula, does a band that has now been together for many more years than the Beatles ever were”. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Charlotte Observer ‘s Théoden Janes, reviewing the 21 May concert at Truist Field at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, praised the show, calling the setlist “thoughtfully curated” and writing that “the entire night was one big nonstop highlight”. However, they suggested that the production “skip the music video that plays during ‘My Valentine,'” stating, “We want to think about someone we love during that song. Not about Depp and Amber Heard”; they also criticized the heavy traffic around the stadium and the management of it by stadium officials and local police. Grant Albert of the Miami New Times , in a review of the 25 May concert held at Hollywood, Florida’s Hard Rock Live, wrote that McCartney “can’t hit the high notes like he used to. Still, his 60-plus year discography, showmanship, and influence didn’t stop the nearly 7,000 attendees from enjoying the rock polymath perform”; he added, “McCartney injected loads of humor, visuals, lasers, and a genuine intention to put on a good show”. Reviewing the 7 June concert at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, Marc Hirsch of the Boston Herald noted “some small noticeable vulnerabilities from age” in McCartney’s singing voice, “But it otherwise maintained its essential McCartneyness”. Hirsh also wrote, “Eleven days shy of turning 80, he was spry and up for the endurance challenge of playing upward of 30 songs over the course of two hours and 40 minutes at the first of two sold-out shows.” […]
McCartney also wants to go back on the road, a life that he finds invigorating. “ I’ve been doing this for a long time, ” he said. “ So another me takes over: Professional Performing Paul—the triple ‘P’! ” If the question is “ Why do you keep at it?, ” the answer is plain: “ I plan to continue living. That’s the central idea. ” From Paul McCartney Doesn’t Really Want to Stop the Show  | The New Yorker , October 11, 2021
W hen you come back after three years you get a bit more nervous than you normally would, because you’re just thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, have I forgotten how it goes?’ It takes a little while until you start to think, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve got this!’ and then your nerves go away. Whether it’s the first time they’ve seen him or the tenth, he never, ever, disappoints.” —FLAUNT “McCartney was in top form, his voice effortlessly climbing to the heights it always hit so easily back in the day…”  —THE LOS ANGELES TIMES “The total and complete immersion into MaccaLand was colorful and loud, rocking and rolling, nostalgic and present, and, above all, in the truest sense, marvelous… And, in the end, the love McCartney has taken for 60 years was equal to the love he’s made for generations.” —RELIX “Definitely We’re Amazed by Paul McCartney’s Blowout Dodger Stadium Show… McCartney remains a show-stopping entertainer of the highest order.” —VARIETY With songs like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Band on the Run’,  ‘Let It Be’ and so many more, the Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show: Hours of the greatest moments from the last 60 years of music — dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives.  Paul and his band have performed in an unparalleled range of venues and locations throughout the Americas, the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and all points between: outside the Coliseum in Rome, Moscow’s Red Square, Buckingham Palace, The White House, a free show in Mexico for over 400,000 people, the last ever show at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park where The Beatles played their final concert in 1966, a 2016 week in the California desert that included two headline sets at the historic Desert Trip festival and a jam-packed club gig  for a few hundred lucky fans at Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace, and even one performance broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul’s longtime band – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – and constantly upgraded state of the art audio and video technology that ensures an unforgettable experience from every seat in the house, a Paul McCartney concert is never anything short of life-changing.

The highlight of this new tour is a virtual duet Paul McCartney has with his old mate John Lennon, singing “ I’ve Got A Feeling “, using footage from the rooftop concert.

How does it feel to know that as recently as a few days ago, Paul McCartney was using footage from the documentary on his Got Back tour? Jabez Olssen: We helped them with that and we put that together for him. That’s fantastic. We’ve been watching some clips on YouTube and it’s just amazing to see Paul being able to sing “I’ve Got A Feeling” with John Lennon. That was possible because of the machine learning and artificial intelligence software that had been developed down here by the team to clean up the audio. We had a lot of audio that was otherwise going to be unusable because there was no clarity to the dialogue. You couldn’t hear what was being said because of all the guitars playing over the top of it or tuning or background noise. This new software has been developed — this artificial intelligence software — that’s able to recognize the different Beatles voices and instruments and separate them out into their own standalone tracks, and thus we could get a lot more usable audio for the documentary. The same software is now being used for Paul’s concert to remove all the other Beatles off the audio so it’s only John Lennon live singing, and then that can be played on the screen behind Paul as he sings his part live. That’s just a thrill to see that it’s all come together and it’s working. Bonza budget airline in administration as flights across the country cancelled

People board plane on tarmac

Embattled regional airline Bonza has gone into administration after cancelling flights across the country on Tuesday and stranding potentially thousands of passengers.

Documents filed with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) reveal Bonza Aviation Pty Ltd was at 3.25pm declared "externally administered", with accounting and advisory firm Hall Chadwick appointed to the role.

In a media release on Tuesday afternoon, Hall Chadwick confirmed Bonza's fleet would be grounded until Thursday, May 2.

Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar have offered complimentary seats, where available, on their flights to passengers stranded mid-journey on Tuesday.

Bonza chief executive Tim Jordan released a statement on Tuesday morning saying all services would be "temporarily suspended" while discussions were held about the ongoing viability of the business.

The airline has not responded to requests for comment, but has published a statement on its website and app apologising to affected customers.

"We’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market," the statement reads.

Early Bonza flights in and out of its base on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, along with Melbourne legs to Rockhampton, Gladstone and Tamworth, were all cancelled on Tuesday morning.

Three Bonza planes were parked on the tarmac at Sunshine Coast Airport on Tuesday, including a Boeing 737-MAX aircraft named Bruce, which had been leased from Canadian low-cost airline Flair to fly in Australia.

Bonza's financial position has been the subject of intense speculation since its first flight early last year.

"The discussions regarding ongoing trading are occurring over the forthcoming days and the administrators will be in a position to update all stakeholders as the matter progresses," Hall Chadwick said.

Passengers stranded

Rona Wall caught a shuttle bus to the Sunshine Coast airport early on Tuesday morning hoping to catch a flight to Rockhampton, after her scheduled Bonza flight from the Gold Coast was cancelled on Monday.

She said she received multiple correspondences from Bonza about a rescheduled flight, which created a lot of confusion.

Two unhappy looking women sitting on a seat.

"I've got a text message that was in my younger daughter's name, and an email, and also [a message] on the app," Ms Wall said.

"All three notifications were for three different flights."

Nicole Morris was due to fly from Melbourne to Rockhampton on Tuesday with Bonza but was told her flight had been cancelled when she arrived at the airport.

"It's crap, I don't know what I'm meant to do," Ms Morris said.

"I've come in and I can't find anyone to talk to — there's nobody here."

Nicole Morris

Bonza said affected passengers had been told they would receive a full refund.

The federal Transport Department has set up a hotline for stranded passengers on the number 1800 069 244, which will operate until 10pm.

'They were told Bonza has finished'

A Sunshine Coast man whose wife works for the airline told the ABC about 20 cabin crew were called into a meeting early on Tuesday morning.

"There were two crews there — they were just basically told that Bonza has finished," he said.

"They've been told that they're not flying until further notice.

"They've all been told that the bottom line is that Bonza will no longer be flying."

He said the news was a blow for staff and the region.

"They're pretty devastated. It's their job. She's been in it from day one. It's a bit of a blow for Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast," he said.

History of cancellations

After months of delay, Bonza was given the go-ahead to start flying regional routes from the Sunshine Coast in January last year.

It was the first new local airline since Tiger Airways launched 15 years earlier, and its business model aimed to link regional centres often ignored by the larger carriers.

The company launched a base in Melbourne two months later.

Since launching, Bonza has faced criticism for cancelling flights, including mass cancellations over Christmas , and suspending routes .

A spokeswoman for Bonza last week, when the company cut services from the Gold Coast,  said it was working on improving customer service due to passenger complaints.

'Devastating' for regional tourism

Bundaberg Tourism chief executive Katherine Reid said the news was devastating.

"We believe that the Melbourne to Bundaberg route has been one of the strongest performing in the state for Bonza, sitting at an average of 90 per cent capacity," she said.

Ms Reid said that equated to as many as 400 people a week coming from Victoria into the Wide Bay region.

"We know a lot of people have had holidays booked," she said.

"We need to continue working with all levels of government to really attract airline partners into regional areas."

Call for bailout

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce said he hoped the airline could "see their way out of" the situation but said the federal government could be doing more to help.

He wanted the government to consider a bailout package.

"Certainly consider it ... on the premise of a better market outcome for all passengers not just helping out one company," he said.

Close up of Robbie Katter

North West Queensland MP Robbie Katter said Bonza's struggles were a symptom of a bigger issue in the industry.

"It's disappointing because we need this competition," the Traegar MP said.

"The bigger guys will always make it as difficult as possible for airlines to enter the market and destroy the dominance they've got.

"I'll plan to push the government to underwrite these funds so that bush residents aren't left worse off."

'Burning money'

Aviation analyst Geoffrey Thomas, the editor-in-chief of the website Airline Ratings, said he understood the airline's backers, 777 partners, had made changes to the leasing and financing of its aircraft.

He said the budget carrier may have been caught off guard.

777 Partners has been contacted for comment.

a man in a suit smiles at camera

"It's shattering news, particularly for those affected who hold tickets and were going to fly today or tomorrow," Mr Thomas said.

"I think that the problem of Bonza is overseas, with leasing companies, and not the local management, not the business model."

But he said the low profit margin model could be tough in regional Australia, given long distances and relatively low passenger numbers.

"If you need 85 per cent capacity and you only get 70 per cent … then you're burning money," he said.
