Introducing Castries

About castries, castries travel guide.

Banana plantations, sugarcane crops, powder fine sands and mountain peaks characterize the scenery with the twin-mountains of the Pitons rising out of the sea. Another spectacle is the bubbling springs of the steam-shrouded Qualibou Volcano. Culturally speaking, St Lucia 's heritage mixes considerable British and French influences with the Caribbean 's African roots and the island's aged Carib Indian traditions. This unique fusion of cultures is evident at every turn, from the neatly-painted colonial-style plantations and French-laden patois to St Lucia's easy-going Caribbean friendliness and hospitability. Castries' deep sea port, built in 1948, is used year-round by cruise liners. It contains duty free shops at Point Seraphine and La Place Carinage and is home to umpteen restaurants and dozens of harbour-side bars. Renowned for its stunning volcanic terrain, lush rainforests, rolling meadows and pristine beaches, St Lucia is cooled by a refreshing trade wind - a blessing during the soaring summer highs.

Sightseeing:

It has been hailed one of the most beautifully located Caribbean cities, and Castries certainly boasts an enviable spot. Edged by verdant, green hills on an expansive bay, the capital is alive with dawn-'til-dusk hustle and bustle. Boats, buses, cars and taxis ferry people to and fro as passengers disembark at Point Seraphine to delve in Castries - and beyond. Highlights: • Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception • Derek Walcott Square (named after the island's Nobel Prize-winning poet) • Morne Fortune (Hill of Good Luck) • Vigie Beach • Malabar Beach • Choc Beach • La Toc Beach

Castries' main shopping hub is Pointe Seraphine, a dedicated retail zone set around a pretty plaza. More than 30 stores stock an array of local speciality goods, from handmade crafts to island produce. St Lucia's unique batik and silkscreen designs are used in a variety of items, from clothing to table linen. Other quality items include beaded jewellery, straw-woven hats, rugs, bags, sandals and wood carvings.

Restaurants

Seafood features on every St Lucia menu, from local langouste (lobster), tatiri (a small fish, deep-fried and eaten whole) and lambi (conch) to fried jackfish. Robust Caribbean favourites include pepper-pot stew and callaloo soup served with fried plantain accompanied by sauces that mix deep Creole flavours and West Indian piquancy with traditional French cooking styles.

When to go:

St Lucia's hot, tropical climate is tempered by cooling trade winds throughout most of the year. For the driest months, visit December to May. Showers are more likely June to November.

The 7 best places to visit in St Lucia

Nasha Smith

Sep 7, 2023 • 9 min read

going places travel castries st. lucia

St Lucia may be small (just 238 sq mi) but it packs a punch with the number of places travelers can visit © Afton Almaraz/Getty Images

St Lucia, an idyllic Caribbean island, stretches across a mere 238 square miles, yet it teems with a potpourri of attractions to satisfy every wanderlust. The echoes of history resonate in the time-worn ruins of Pigeon Island National Park, while the natural spectacle of the Sulphur Springs bathes the landscape in a steamy embrace. The magnificent Pitons, extending skyward, form an iconic backdrop to the island's volcanic narrative.

Whether you’re chasing waterfalls or a sun-soaked beach getaway, St Lucia  delivers. Here's your guide to the best places to visit.

1. Pigeon Island National Park

Best area for historians

Do you enjoy history, but also want a taste of the great outdoors or the opportunity to relax on the beach? You’ll adore Pigeon Island National Park . History buffs will be interested in the ruins and artifacts – including an officer's kitchen and soldiers' barracks – from St Lucia's past as a strategic outpost during the British and French battle for control, and adventurers will enjoy the hikes and views.

Located at the island's northernmost tip, the national park spreads across 44 acres. A leisurely climb to Fort Rodney's (225ft) summit unveils spectacular panoramic views of the northwest coastline.

The living museum continues at the top with an authentic cannon, the remains of the military fort and a powder room. An intrepid adventurer will find Signal Hill's large rocks and loose gravel terrain more of a challenge. Even if you’re not the outdoorsy type, the unfettered panorama will make the scramble to the peak worthwhile.

For a halcyon day, retreat to the immaculately trimmed, expansive lawn for a picnic, or laze the day away on one of two white-sand beaches onsite. I’ve spent many weekends hidden away on the secluded beach inside the park, taking breaks only to grab a Bounty Rum and orange juice or some wings from The Thirsty Parrot located just outside the gates.

2. Gros-Islet

Best area for foodies

The Gros-Islet district stretches from just outside the capital of Castries to the island's northern tip, and it has a long-standing reputation as the most convivial corner of St. Lucia. But it's also an underrated foodie paradise.

The Naked Fisherman , a secluded restaurant with a thatched-roof, serves delicious seafood delicacies, including conch fritters, crispy squid with pickled veggies, ceviche, creole fish stew with curry, and ahi tuna poke with cucumber. Enjoy the delicious spread as the waves gently caress the shoreline.

Located a few minutes south, the quiet fishing village of Gros-Islet comes alive with pulsating live music every Friday night for the staple street party. Amid the revelry lies a veritable buffet of local cuisine.

Duke's Fish Place sits on the seafront and welcomes the crowd with a menu of grilled or fried marlin, tuna, barracuda, pot fish, and lambi (conch), accompanied by their sinfully sumptuous garlic sauce.

Diners can also dig into Auntie's green fig salad (a mix of boiled green bananas, shredded saltfish, chopped vegetables, mayo seasoned with fresh herbs and spices, and a sprinkle of the magic found in any West Indian meal), along with other side dishes like ground provisions and local fruit juices.

Other options include barbecue chicken and bakes – fried doughy discs – from one of the vendors peppered along the roadside. Another favorite local haunt, the reggae-themed Irie Bar , is tucked away near the beachfront and offers cold libations and lighthearted conversation.

At the entrance of the nearby Beausejour community, a cluster of trucks makes up the bustling Food Village. Feast on authentic Jamaican fare, Mediterranean meals, wraps, vegetarian and vegan options, dairy-free artisanal ice cream, and arguably St. Lucia's best burgers at Burnz Food Truck – don’t skip the caramelized onions, and if you’re feeling really brave, attempt the fully loaded Jabal burger.

3. Rodney Bay

Best area for sailing enthusiasts

To take a breather, unwind, and bask in the warm golden glow of a sunset, head to Rodney Bay Marina . In addition to being a premier yachting location, Rodney Bay Marina is one of the top sport fishing locations in the Caribbean.

The premises are well-equipped with a host of facilities and amenities for boaters and sailing enthusiasts, including private showers, WiFi connectivity and customs and immigration. There’s also a fully-equipped boatyard onsite with a 75ft travelift and dry storage staffed by an expert technical crew.

Since 1986, Las Palmas in the Canary Islands has been the starting point for the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers , a race heading west across the Atlantic bound for St Lucia.

Upwards of 200 boats participate, making it the largest trans-ocean sailing event on the planet. As soon as the participants arrive on the shores of St. Lucia, the following two weeks are one nonstop celebration after another heading into the Christmas season.

The Marina transforms into the ARC Village, with a wave of events including fire eating, limbo, J’ouvert (daybreak) jump-ups, performances by several local bands, chef demos, and costume parties. ARC attendees can even pit their athletic skills against those of locals in football. It can get pretty crowded, but it’s hard not to get swept up in the revelry.

For the more introverted, the Rodney Bay Marina also lays claim to exquisite waterside dining options like Rituals Sushi , La Mesa Bar and Grill (my personal favorite haunt), and Elena's Italian Pizza and Gelato  – the strawberry cheesecake yogurt is divine. The only experience closer to heaven is one of the serene sunset cruises that set sail from the dock multiple times a week.

4. Babonneau

Best area for adventurers

If you're looking for an adrenaline fix, look no further than the Babonneau region, where you can ride a thrilling zip line through the rainforest treetops and get a bird's eye view of the St. Lucian countryside.

Guests of Rainforest Adventures St. Lucia will receive a safety briefing from a trained naturalist before heading out on a practice run on the park's training cable in groups of no more than eight.

You'll arrive at the top station from the training cable by taking the aerial tram, which navigates you through the dense thicket of the rainforest. After about 10 minutes of hiking along a trail that gradually descends through the rainforest's underbrush, you will reach the first platform.

From here, you can travel along eight different zip lines high above the rainforest canopy while taking in spectacular views of the north of the island, the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

A collection of boats of various sizes float in the calm waters of Marigot Bay at sunset in St Lucia

5. Castries

Best city for shopping

The Castries Market is the heartbeat of St Lucia's capital and a veritable treasure trove of unique local wares – find everything from woven baskets, carved wooden sculptures, and fragrant spices to unusual trinkets made from coconut shells and calabash.

Saturdays buzz with energy as locals descend upon the market at the break of dawn, weaving through stalls brimming with local produce and freshly picked herbs. Wander out back to purchase a coconut from one of the open-backed vans parked in the large lot. I like to have the vendor break the husk open to scoop out the translucent jelly. It’s even better – and crunchier – when it’s on the cusp of the firmer copra state.

For those yearning for a more refined shopping experience, the Pointe Seraphine complex awaits just a 15-minute walk from the city center. This duty-free compound caters to a wide variety of services and offers everything from car rentals and thrilling land and boat tours to an enticing array of souvenirs, luxurious fragrances, fine jewelry, and clothing.

Once a month, Helen's Daughters , a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering rural women, hosts a FarmHERS market at Pointe Seraphine. Here you'll find a smorgasbord of locally produced goodies that transport me back to childhood, like coconut tablet, guava jam, pemi, souse with cucumber, and icicles.

Local tip: The Pointe Seraphine Shopping Complex also doubles as a dock when cruise ships are in port, so be prepared for crowds on these days. The city has limited parking but is very walkable, so you can skip the car rental and hop a bus or taxi to the market.

6. Marigot Bay

Best area for set-jetters

Forget jet-setting – set-jetting is the new travel craze. The most recent trend in wanderlust involves organizing a vacation around a filming location for a television show or movie you love. It might seem odd initially, but it makes perfect sense for pop culture junkies and cinephiles craving an immersive experience.

Enchanting, turquoise-hued Marigot Bay, once dubbed "the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean" by American novelist James A. Michener, has been featured in scenes from several films, including 1967's original Doctor Doolittle  (starring Rex Harrison), and 1979's Firepower  (starring Sophia Loren).

Marigot Bay also makes a memorable cameo in the first installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean blockbuster film series – it's here that Captain Jack Sparrow first spots the skeletons suspended from an arch projecting from the crystalline Caribbean waters.

Even if you're not a film buff, Marigot Bay is worth a visit for the views. A palm-fringed slip of sand sits in the calm, azure-blue waters amidst the verdurous slopes, creating a postcard-perfect scene.

Steam rises from jagged rocks in Soufriere, St Lucia

7. Soufrière

Best area for natural attractions

Soufrière is a popular draw for visitors and locals alike, and for good reason. The allure is due, in large part, to the abundance of scenic backdrops and natural treasures found within the borders of the charming west coast town.

The iconic Pitons rise majestically from the lush, emerald landscape, inviting hikers and outdoor adventurers to explore. If you don't feel like climbing, there are multiple other vantage points where you can enjoy the views of those vividly green mountains juxtaposed against impossibly blue waters.

The Sulphur Springs are the remnants of a collapsed volcanic crater, and the attraction is touted as the world's only drive-in volcano. Even though the volcano has not erupted since the 1700s, visible wisps of smoke waft into the air, and the pungent sulfuric scent permeates the surroundings.

Its mineral waters are reputed to alleviate inflammation, ease the pain of arthritis and eczema, purify the body, and ease muscle soreness. Slather on the magnesium and sulphur-infused mud for a skin treatment that will leave your skin silky smooth and supple. If you’re lucky you will encounter Sherman – one of the onsite guides and a Soufrière native – who can help apply the mud and provide a detailed history of the springs. Rinse off in one of the four pools which vary in temperature.

On the edge of Soufrière, the Toraille Waterfall cascades down a 50ft cliff face into a plunge pool cocooned in thick vegetation. Another waterfall sits at the foothills of Petit Piton. The appropriately named Piton Falls is a 30ft drop from the top, with the water spilling into a small pool. Not to be outdone, the water at the Diamond Falls appears to change color due to various minerals from volcanic rocks and rain. The falls are flanked by botanical gardens brimming with a riot of vibrant plants.

Local tip: Hiking Gros Piton without a guide is strongly discouraged and should not be attempted following rainfall, when the terrain becomes slippery and muddy. Unfortunately, swimming in Diamond Falls is not permitted due to safety concerns, but you can still bask in its splendor.

10-day St. Lucia Itinerary: The Ultimate 2024 Guide

Explore the beauty of St. Lucia, a stunning Caribbean Island with sandy beaches, gorgeous snorkeling, and the iconic Pitons, through this 10-day St. Lucia itinerary. While often recognized as a popular cruise destination, the St. Lucia offers numerous off-the-beaten-path adventures for the more adventurous traveler.

Whether you prefer a secluded getaway or indulge in a resort experience, St. Lucia caters to both. During our 10-day St. Lucia Itinerary, we opted for a mid-range travel experience. We rented a car for seven days , but it’s also easy to rent for the entire trip.

Ten days proved enough to explore everything the island has to offer. On our final day, as we prepared to depart for the airport, Wilhelm and I agreed that we had covered all the sights and activities we wanted to experience!

Feel free to use and adapt this 10-day St. Lucia itinerary as you see fit or explore it in the reverse order.

Pro tip: I recommend you bring your own snorkeling equipment sans the slippers.

10-day St. Lucia Itinerary

This itinerary starts off on the Western coast of St. Lucia, which is more built up for tourism. It ends on the Eastern coast where you’ll have a final few days of relaxation. For prices, I’ve quoted either dollars or Eastern Caribbean dollars (EC) depending on what currency we paid in.

Day 1: Laborie

Spend 1 night at Sunset Lane  ($75/night)

Morning/Airport

When you arrive at the airport, you can exchange money or use the ATM. The ATMs are not in operation between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM daily, not just at the airport, but throughout the island from what I experienced. We took out about $200 worth of EC and took out more later in the trip. To avoid another ATM trip, I’d suggest taking out $400 for 10 days for 2 people.

To get to Laborie, you can taxi or pick up a rental car that you’ll use for the rest of your trip. If you take a taxi, negotiate the price upfront at the taxi stand. I suggest you pay $20. We booked through Discover Cars and got a local Hertz SUV when we went to the capital

St. Lucia airport taxi stand

If you follow this itinerary, you’ll end up taking public transportation back around the airport tomorrow to get to your next city anyway, so it does make sense to rent a car immediately. However, we wanted the adventure of using some public transportation during our 10-day St. Lucia Itinerary.

Afternoon/Laborie

Laborie is an off-the-beaten-path destination and a chill way to make your arrival to St. Lucia . There are just a few lodging options, and almost everyone seems like a local. The main attraction here is Mama Tilly’s, a lobster experience like no other .

Sunset Lane is a cute and simple place to stay in Laborie . This is also going to be the cheapest accommodation you’ll have for the rest of the trip at just $75 per night. Our room didn’t have any windows, but it was fine because we just stayed for the night. The balcony view was amazing though, and we had a lovely evening watching the sunset.

St. Lucia Laborie Sunset Lane hotel

After checking in and freshening up, visit the famed Mama Tilly’s for a lobster lunch. We were lucky and I hope you are too because she makes the best lobster available! We ordered one lobster to split between the two of us along with the daily provisions, which is a medley of different vegetables. Lunch at Mama Tilly’s cost 140 EC /$50; we used EC in cash though she accepted dollars.

Laborie Mama Tilly Lobster Lunch

After lunch, walk around town and visit the church .

Laborie Vibes

Walk down the beach.

Laborie Vibes

Day 2: Castries and Gros Islet

Spend 2 nights Gros Islet Airbnb ($170/night)

Visit Cafe en Ville for breakfast in Laborie; it’s right next to the church and offers a great breakfast as well as an all-day dining selection. Some items, like the omelet and salt fish, are reasonably priced, while others may feel like a bit of a scam, such as the 18 EC ($7) fruit platter. We splurged a little more than we expected and spent 100 EC on coffees, smoothies, two mains, and the fruit platter.

Cafe en Ville Laborie St. Lucia

I highly recommend trying the local St. Lucian breakfast with salt fish ; it was excellent! Afterward, you can continue to walk through the neighborhood or head back to pack up.

Transferring to Gros Islet

Start your journey from the bank bus stop in Laborie toward Vieux Fort . I suggest you leave before 10am so that you are assured the bus will fill up and leave quickly (with people heading out for their jobs). I forgot to note how much the bus charged but I think it was 4 EC per person.

Busses St. Lucia

A short 5-minute walk in Vieux Fort will lead you to the next bus station at the Vision Express heading towards Castries , the capital of St. Lucia. We waited only 10 minutes for the bus to fill up. It costs 9 EC each to Castries . Our bus departed at 10:15 and we were told it takes 45 min to 1.15 hours, depending on the driver.

Busses St. Lucia

Storytime : Our driver turned out to be hilarious because he was going quite fast for a good portion of the trip, and then eventually the St. Lucian started complaining he was driving too fast. So, then he slowed down significantly and they were annoyed he was driving too slow! They jokingly said they wanted him to drive “medium rare,” not “rare” or “well-done.” Hahha. It was funny, but I could easily see how this time variation could happen because of how fast the drivers go on the highway.

In Castries, catch another bus to Gros Islet for 4 EC per person. Despite a couple of transfers, the process felt smooth, especially as we spent about two hours exploring Castries.

If you rent a car and then just head straight to Castries to spend 2 hours, then continue on to Gros Islet.

In Castries, we spent the afternoon going to the Central Market and checking out one of the small museums before taking the bus to Gros Islet. We also stopped at the Digicel store to buy a sim card. There was a nice park right across from it and the public library.

Castries Vibes

The Central Market offered a small but nice selection of items, with hot sauces and sea moss being particularly interesting. I learned sea moss can be used as a thickening agent in drinks and has a unique aloe-like texture. (Later, I tried it out having found a sea moss drink at the grocery store… honestly, I didn’t love it but even later I had a fresh smoothie made with sea moss and that was excellent!). There is also fresh veggies and fruits for sale.

Central Market Castries St. Lucia

Noteworthy items at the market include spice packets, bird earrings priced at $10, and hanging hummingbirds ranging from $15 to $20. Even though I didn’t end up buying anything, the experience of exploring the market was enjoyable and I’d recommend it!

Central Market Castries St. Lucia

A note on the Google Maps location: it looks like it’s on the waterfront but it’s actually across the street.

If you need groceries for your Gros Islet trip, stop here at the Massy .

There was an ad hoc fish market outside the Central Market that was cool.

Central Market Castries St. Lucia

For lunch we had an amazing roti wrap and a fish burger at Green Eats. This will probably be the best fish burger of your life. We spent 28 EC on two juices (get the passion fruit!) and our two meals.

Green Eats Castries Lunch St. Lucia

Next, you visit the Walcott House Museum , dedicated to the life and works of Derek Walcott, a Nobel-winning poet. Entrance is free but donation is suggested. The most interesting thing about the museum is the house itself, it’s so pretty.

Walcott Museum Castries

The museum is very small, but my grandma actually took a course on Walcott’s poetry, so I thought it would be fun to visit, though if you skip this you won’t have fomo.

After visiting the museum, take the 35-minute bus ride to Gros Islet. We stayed in this charming Airbnb , located about a 10-minute walk outside of town. I highly recommend this accommodation, which could serve as a great base for your stay in Saint Lucia, too. It offers all the amenities, including a full kitchen and bathroom, as well as a small private beach area, featuring a breathtaking view.

Gros Islet Pigeon Island Airbnb

Instead of wandering around Castris, you could go on an ATV tour !

In the early evening, we walked back into town and had dinner along the beach at The Thirsty Parrot. There are several restaurants in the area, but this looked the most authentic and it turned out to be excellent! We had an option of rice or pasta with our protein of choice. I got the fish and Wilhelm got the veg option. Don’t skip out on eating here for dinner while in Gros Islet.

The Thirsty Parrot Dinner Gros Islet Pigeon Island

The walk to and from town in the evening is dark from the Airbnb. We were advised not to walk in the dark “just in case,” but it seemed silly to spend $15 on a taxi to go so close… There is a taxi stand across from the Sandals Resort where you can get a taxi if needed , but be prepared to spend $15 to get anywhere around town. The call number for the taxi stand is 455-2084.

Day 3: Pigeon Island + Street Party

We bought some groceries in Castries, so we had breakfast at the Airbnb before heading out for the day—I suggest you do the same!

Pigeon Island is a highlight in Gros Islet . It’s a great way to spend your morning and early afternoon. The park entrance fee is around $10 per person.

Pigeon Island Hiking and Beach St. Lucia map

In the park, you’ll find two small hikes – one to a fort and the other to the island’s highest point. Despite appearing a bit challenging, both hikes are quite manageable, even in the heat.

After completing both hikes, you can explore the Old Fort area and a small museum before heading to the beach.

Pigeon Island Hiking and Beach St. Lucia

Pigeon Island National Park has two beaches. We opted for the second one as it seemed to have more shade, but the first beach has rental chairs available. Snorkeling gear can be rented for $50, or you can bring your own. There is also diving equipment for rent for $90, and there are showers and bathrooms available.

Pigeon Island Hiking and Beach St. Lucia

We set up our things in the shade on the beach and enjoyed nearly an hour and a half of uninterrupted snorkeling, particularly in the area between the two beaches. The water was lovely, and it felt safe to leave our belongings on the beach.

Lots of fun fish to see but there are better snorkeling spots later on in this guide!

At around 1:30 PM, leave the beach and take a taxi to The Naked Fisherman for $15; there is a taxi stand right outside the national park. Be sure to book the restaurant in advance if you’d like to go!

Pigeon Island taxi stand

Despite our high expectations due to its difficulty in booking and high ratings, I was personally disappointed with the experience at The Naked Fisherman. The service left much to be desired; we had to repeatedly ask for our table, menus, napkins, silverware, food, and water. I wouldn’t opt to dine here again. The food was generally underwhelming and expensive; though I really enjoyed the Island Saltfish Beignet.

Naked Fisherman Review St. Lucia

I also found the two cocktails we got unappealing… The Spicy Mango margarita had pickled jalapeno juice in it which was not a vibe in my opinion.

The most notable feature of the restaurant is the hanging egg off the side of the cliff , which is super unique! However, I don’t consider it a must-visit, and you won’t miss out if you choose otherwise.

Naked Fisherman Review St. Lucia

As an alternative, go horseback riding on the beach in Gros Islet. I’ve done this in Cape Town and it was such a cute experience if you haven’t done it before. Or, you can charter a boat (with drinks included)!

When planning your 10-day St. Lucia itinerary, aim to arrive in Gros Islet for the Friday Fish Fry party aka FRYday . If, like us, you arrive on Thursday, you’ll have a day to explore before the party. The street party is a unique experience and a definite must-do on the island . I have so much to say about the evening that it needs its own blog.

Day 4: exploring on the way to soufriere.

Spend 2 nights at Samfi Gardens ($200/night)

In the morning, take the bus back to Castries, pick up a rental car at the airport, and then drive to Soufriere. We didn’t think we needed a car for the beginning portion of our trip and it was fun to take public transport. However, if you’re into ease and accessibility from the beginning, then you would have already rented a car when you landed on day one. Therefore, if you did this drive straight to Soufriere.

Between Castries and Soufriere, there are a couple of charming shops worth stopping at if you’ve got your own car. Be prepared for the immediate shock of navigating intense inclines to reach these locations. I’ve never driven on such steep inclines before; it made me a little nervous, and I kept my hand on the handbrake half the time. I was quite relieved to head back down to sea level.

going places travel castries st. lucia

Your first stop is Howelton Estate which is also home to a little tourist shop with batik prints . The home itself is quite large and has a great view overlooking the capital. You can buy chocolates, postcards, jewelry, gifts and more. I picked up a couple of postcards and regret not buying one of the gorgeous batik scarves.

Next, stop at Eudovic’s Art Studio . You’ll be guided around this woodworking studio . The large wooden sculptures are quite expensive and upwards of thousands of dollars, but there are some smaller items for sale in the gift shop. Unfortunately, they’re just not as nice or intricate as the larger pieces and seem a little too touristy. Just view this stop as an art gallery instead of an art shop!

going places travel castries st. lucia

Get lunch at the Pink Plantation . Unfortunately, we didn’t realize we had to make a reservation in advance to eat here and just drove up. However, we were turned away. It looks really good and it’s worth a stop because there are not that many other options on the way to Soufriere. Make a reservation!

On the way to Soufriere, on your right-hand side, you’ll pass a viewpoint of the Gros and Petit Pitons —a scenic highlight of St. Lucia. Although you’ll have even better views at Samfi Gardens, you’ll likely get as excited as we were and stop here to take some pictures. I thought I pinned the correct location on Google Maps for the lookout but as I reflect on it, I can’t be sure if this is right or not… In any case, you’ll notice the cute pagoda and the view; there is also a pull-out area for your car. If you don’t stop, don’t worry because the view at Samfi Gardens will blow your mind.

Samfi Gardens is a must-stay during your 10-day St. Lucia Itinerary. This was my favorite location. Just look at this view!

The rooms are all self-catering with the basic kitchenware though you’ll need to go out to purchase your own oils and spices. There is no restaurant on-site, but you can pre-order breakfast if you want. The grocery shop in Soufriere is well stocked and the town has plenty of restaurants to visit for lunch and dinner. However, if you’re sick of eating fish like I easily am on island vacations, then I suggest going to the grocery store and picking up some pasta stuff for dinner. There is also a variety of meat alternatives at the grocery store.

The room at Sami Gardens was spacious and comfortable with the best views I’ve ever seen. Book here .

And I became BFFs with this cute cat!

Take a walk around Soufriere. You can park your car at the bus station.

Seashell Beach Restaurant is a good place to get dinner on your first night. I had the Creole fish and although the price was good at $15, I didn’t like the fish of the day, unfortunately. But the rest of the provisions/sides were great. Instead, I wish I got one of the wraps or sandwiches. That said, the views here are lovely and the fish fritters were incredible! I got two orders of the local sorrel juice too.

The view of the Petit Piton was amazing from the restaurant

Day 5: Snorkeling at Anse Mamin

The main activity planned for today is snorkeling at Anse Mamin Beach ! While this beach is accessible only through the Jade Mountain Beach Resort, you can park at the resort and walk through to reach Anse Mamin Beach for free.

Upon reaching the restaurant area at Jade Mountain Resort beach area, take a right at the tennis courts. Ignore the sign indicating “guests only,” and continue until you pass a beach with a ton of umbrellas.

Finally, you’ll reach a stunning deserted strip.

During our three-hour visit to the beach, there was literally no one around . It was truly a special experience. The snorkeling was fantastic, and for the first time in my life, I snorkeled continuously for almost two hours because the water was clear, and there was so much to see!

Normally, I feel anxious about being too close to corals, but here, the rock formations were far enough beneath me to avoid anxiety, yet close enough to observe all the marine life!

going places travel castries st. lucia

My GoPro pictures don’t do justice to everything we saw.

When you’re done snorkeling, drive up to Adeline’s Art Cafe. You need to book lunch in advance, or you can just have a juice like we did. There are some local crafts for sale, but honestly, a few things look like items I’ve seen throughout markets in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, and more… We got juice and plantain chips for 27 EC.

going places travel castries st. lucia

Next visit, Cacao Sainte Lucie . It’s a great spot to get lunch or pop in for a bite of chocolate. We bought some chocolate bars here. I’d avoid coming on Sunday because they only have a set menu that day; instead, the regular a la carte menu has an array of dishes that incorporate chocolate that sounded a lot more interesting than the Sunday set menu.

Cacao St Lucia

If you have time, visit Project Chocolate for a cool bean to bar experience .  Lunch is included plus you’ll try a ton of chocolate.

During our 10-day St. Lucia itinerary, this evening coincided with New Year’s Eve so we had pre-booked a special New Year’s Eve dinner at the nearby Treetops Restaurant .

For NYE there was a set menu that definitely gave the impression that all their meals will be excellent so I  recommend dining here during your trip. There were great views over the Pitons and lovely service . I love the eclectic Moroccan/Indian kind of vibe as well.

The cocktails were exceptional; the bartender inquired about our preferences and crafted a special drink for each person. To cap off the night, we had a fire drink that literally burned as you sipped it.

Day 6: Soufriere Activities

Spend 3 nights at Fond Doux (or stay longer at Samfi Gardens)

Fond Doux: around $200 a night. Look for deals on booking.com

Unfortunately, when we booked our stay around Soufriere, Samfi Gardens wasn’t available for the 5 days we were planning to spend. Although Fond Doux Resort was very nice, it did not compare to Samfi Gardens because the views there were just so much more magnificent. However, I enjoyed the pool and the service, as well as the jungle-like experience at Fond Doux. Consider a longer stay at Samfi or one of the other hotels around the area. Book Fond Doux.

Spend the entire morning soaking in the views and going in the pool at Samfi Gardens.

going places travel castries st. lucia

In the afternoon, visit the Soufriere Botanical Gardens for $7 and spend the extra $3 to go into the mineral bath. At the botanical gardens you can see a small waterfall and go on a little walk.

going places travel castries st. lucia

I thought the baths were included in the ticket, but no! The bathwardens came to get our money immediately when we put on our swimming suits. The baths apparently have medicinal properties . And although we weren’t suffering from anything, we stayed in for about 15 minutes for fun. The water was so nice and warm.

There is a changing room and shower by the baths as well as a little touristy shop.

Although we didn’t visit, the Soufriere Drive in Volcano is definitely a unique thing to do on this 10-day St. Lucia itinerary. We weren’t that intrigued with the mud baths that were also listed as a feature, but now I think we should have gone as I’m writing up this itinerary… Hmm.. We were also pretty tired and just wanted to take it easy though. You should check it out if you’re feeling up to it! There is a tour that will make the whole experience easy for you.

Nearby is the Hotel Chocolate which is also a popular destination for chocolate tours and food!

Instead, we went back to Soufriere for lunch at Waterfront De Belle View and were amazed at how great the meal was. The local fish cakes were the best I had on St. Lucia. We had the salt fish and the veg dish of the day as our mains. The local juice was delicious too.

In the late afternoon, we checked into Fond Doux .

Welcome rum punch!

Each cottage is a little bit old-school plantation style and very comfortable. Honestly, I fell asleep for 3 hours after we checked in, woke up for dinner, and then went back to sleep. I was exhausted.

going places travel castries st. lucia

Dinner at Fond Doux was a bit disappointing . The prices were high, more suitable for those coming off cruise ships or on a tour package. We ordered the chili Pasta for $32 and the fish of the day for $30. The pasta was definitely not worth the cost for an oil and simple chili flakes.

Overall, in St. Lucia, I felt that food was challenging due to the mix of unique spots with excellent food and tourist traps catering more to cruise ship or tour package travelers.

Day 7: Tut Paul Hiking and Anse L’Ivrogne Snorkeling

In the morning before breakfast, go on the Tet Paul Trail for the hiking portion of this 10-day St. Lucia itinerary. The trail starts right outside of the Fond Doux so that’s a great incentive to stay there. You can also do it to prepare a little for the Gros Piton hike you’ll do tomorrow.

going places travel castries st. lucia

The trail, with a stop at the viewpoint, from the hotel and back will take under 1.5 hours. The trail isn’t that strenuous except that it’s all uphill. Just take your time. You’ll pass the cocoa plantations along the way. The fee is $10 per person; a guide is included but the trail is easy and we said we wanted to do it on our own. Pay the fee at the hut and then return back up and follow the trail.

There are two viewpoints, the first is to see the Gros Piton, which looks less majestic from this angle…

going places travel castries st. lucia

And the second is the Petit Piton. There is a “ staircase to heaven ” that leads to the Petit Piton viewpoint; in order to use this, at the trail intersection that loops back around, keep left. The views are lovely! There is a hut available at the top that says there are drinks and things available, but it wasn’t open when we reached at 8am.

going places travel castries st. lucia

After taking some photos, head back to your lodge for breakfast. If you’re at Fond Doux, one of the most interesting things for breakfast there is the cocoa tea, which is a grind of cocoa with milk and some other spices. The breakfast buffet was excellent each day at Fond Doux.

going places travel castries st. lucia

In the early afternoon, visit the Anse L’Ivrogne beach for snorkeling . The beach is at the base of the Gros Piton, so it’s quite cool. It’ll also give you a hint of what you’ll climb tomorrow…

going places travel castries st. lucia

This beach is not on Google Maps and we only read about it on our trail hiking app, Mapy. To reach the beach, park at The View Restaurant . Then hike 15-20 minutes down, following the dirt road. Eventually, you’ll keep to your left where some colorful houses are and then you’ll reach the beach. As you pass the View, if you want to have dinner here (like we did) you must let them know beforehand; so be sure to yell about to secure your dinner.

Follow the train down from The View

It does look like there was some sort of parking at the bottom, but depending on your car, you may not want to waste the effort driving down.

The snorkeling was incredible. We saw lots of fish, lobsters, eels, and more . It’s hard to show in all the photos, but just know that it was stunning. We probably snorkeled for about 3 hours on and off, and I just loved the experience. There was no one else there the entire time.

going places travel castries st. lucia

One of the most amazing things about snorkeling here was swimming with 1 million fish . I had never done anything like that before, and I was literally part of the school. I felt like I could touch the fish, but whenever I reached forward, they would swim away! Again, this was so hard to capture on camera…

For dinner at The View, we had fish and provisions for $30 per plate. It was delicious!

As we ate, we were rewarded with an incredible rainbow over the top of the Gros Piton as we were eating dinner. Photos can’t show how amazing it was, and at one point, it actually was a double rainbow.

And, as we drove back to Fond Doux, the views of the Petit Piton towering in the background were beautiful.

Day 8: Hike the Gros Piton

The Gros Piton hike is a highlight of this 10-day St. Lucia itinerary . At the end of the hike, you’ll get a view over the coastline and the southernmost tip of the island. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see St. Vincent as well.

Check out the blog to learn how to hike the Gros Piton.

The Gros Piton Hike: The Ultimate Adventure in St. Lucia

In the afternoon, we lay by the pool for several hours and went into town in the early evening for dinner.

Fond Doux Pool St. Lucia

We walked around Soufriere again before dinner.

Soufriere St. Lucia Vibe

The Island Chef had good reviews online and said it had vegan and veg meals . Although Google Maps suggests it’s open all day, we found it only occasionally open for dinner—so calling ahead is necessary to book your spot and confirm. Priced at $30 per plate, I felt that the portion size was insufficient, and I left a little hungry…

If you’re up for a fancy alternative, check out Orlando Restaurant & Bar . I would have liked to try this restaurant, but they only have a set menu for $70.

Day 9: Travel to Micoud

Spent 2 nights at Spice Bay Suites  ($180 per night)

Today, you’ll mostly have a chill day, going to the beach and then transferring to your next location.

Fond Doux has a deal with Sugar Beach Resort, where you can use their beach for free . I’m not sure of the actual benefit of this because technically, all the beaches in Saint Lucia are free, so you should be able to enter. Apparently, sometimes the resort charges you to access their road down to the beach. IDK. That said, we told the security guard we were staying at Fond Doux, and therefore we didn’t run into any complications.

going places travel castries st. lucia

Park at the guest parking and then walk down for 10 minutes to the beach. We were not allowed to use the hotel lounge chairs, and because it was during New Years time (and the hotel was full) we were not allowed to use the restaurants either. That was fine for us, but just beware in case you’re looking for a snack.

We set up our stuff on the beach (even though we did attempt to use one of the chairs but were told we weren’t guests…) and had a great time.

going places travel castries st. lucia

The snorkeling at Sugar Beach is incredible , located at the base of the Petit Piton. The best spot to snorkel is off to the right side of the dock. We saw lots of squid and fish and even an octopus! It may not show up in these photos though…

going places travel castries st. lucia

You can spend the day here if you bring enough food and water . However, after about 2 hours we were done. The tourist group started entering the water on mass around 11:00 AM and so we took that as our cue to leave.

Check out from Fond Doux at 12pm and then make your way to Micoud, your last destination on this 10-day St. Lucia itinerary. Micoud is a lovely little town on the eastern coast. Be sure to stop to buy some chocolate at the Fond Doux chocolate shop.

going places travel castries st. lucia

Stop along the way in Vieux Fort to get Abi’s Doubles , an incredible, cheap dish with chickpeas and tons of sauces. I suggest getting two and having this for lunch.

going places travel castries st. lucia

Or, drive a little further and have lunch at Grill N Chill . The wraps here are well-priced ($15) for how huge they are.

going places travel castries st. lucia

Wow. I wish we just got one wrap to share because I couldn’t finish half of my fish warp. It literally felt like a whole fish was inside of it.

Reach out to Keramik via phone if you’re interested in some St. Lucian pottery . The mug we bought was the only souvenir we got on our trip! The pottery pieces are hosted at the potter’s home, and we chose a mug with a cool handle. I called the number listed on Google Maps and indicated what time we expected to be passing through the town to make an appointment.

Then, continue driving towards Micoud.

Book through Expedia as their website didn’t work when I tried it.

There was breakfast included and a really nice pool, as well as a full kitchen. I also really liked the little private balcony we had. Later, I found some of their rooms on Airbnb.

As an alternative activity , you could use the day to go on an exclusive catamaran experience and still make it to Micoud in the evening.

This area on the eastern coast of the island is mostly tourist-free, so there isn’t too much to do.

Walking around the Spice Bay Suites neighborhood

The water here is also a lot choppier than on the western side of the country. We enjoyed the view and made our own dinner for the last 2 nights with groceries we bought from Massy.

Day 10: Kayaking and a Fish Spa

Breakfast is included in your rate at Spice Bay Suites. I really enjoyed it and the cocoa tea here was the best!

After breakfast, drive to Paslin, just 15 minutes away. Here you’ll have an amazing experience with Kayak on the Bay. Kayak rentals are for two hours with lunch included for 130 EC per person. Read more about this adventure.

  • If you want to continue the adventure, continue on the Treetops Adventure Park to go ziplining. Locals say that it’s one of the best things to do!

Or, if you want something more chill, stop at LaTille Falls and Garden for a small waterfall and fish spa experience ! This was such a fun way to end our 10-day St. Lucia itinerary. Be sure to check out the homemade products (the syrup was delicious).

Then, experience the fish spa. There are little fish that will nibble at your feet in the pond ! And wow, I’ve never done anything like this before, so it was crazy to feel a little fish suckle on your feet.

The fish were a little bit interested in us, and then three St. Lucians arrived, and the fish just went crazy, so there must be something that makes them like the Saint Lucians more!

We made our own pasta dinner at Spice Bay Suites for last night. I suggest you do the same!

Bonus: Travel Day 11

Take it easy on the last day of your 10-day St. Lucia itinerary. By now, you should feel like you’ve seen and done everything on the island, which is why today barely counts as a real day.

We enjoyed the morning by reading on the balcony and taking a little walk around. In the late morning, we drove to the beach by the airport for a last walk and then went to the airport to drop off the car.

We had no issues returning our rental car. There is a gas station right across from the airport .

Tour Options

St. Lucia is pretty small and most tour companies can pick you up from just about anywhere. If you have a car, you can skip their transport option and show up at the activity location.

Instead of managing all the logistics yourself, this full-day St. Lucia tour is top-rated. This tour will take you to the drive-in volcano, Toraille Waterfall, a Pitons photo stop, snorkeling, a bat cave, fishing villages… All with lunch included.

  • Go on an ATV tour while you’re staying around the capital, Castries.
  • You can go ziplining at Morne Coubaril Estate in St. Lucia.
  • G o horseback riding on the beach in Gros Islet.

Boat Adventures

  • Charter a boat (with drinks included)!
  • Go on an exclusive catamaran experience
  • Experience a sunset cruise with unlimited drinks
  • Spot whales and dolphins on this boat tour that claims it has a 90% sighting average
  • Visit Project Chocolate for a cool bean-to-bar experience .  Lunch is included plus you’ll try a ton of chocolate.
  • See how cocoa, coconuts, and coffee were processed in this 18th-century estate around Soufriere
  • From most locations on the Western part of St. Lucia, you can be picked up for a unique underwater experience . During this “SeaTrek,” you can explore the sea life without diving or swimming!

That’s it for the 10-day St. Lucia itinerary and, as always, leave a comment or get in touch via e-mail if you have any questions.

What Should I Avoid in St Lucia? 23 Travel Tips for 2024

Caribbean Uncovered Privacy Policy

What should you avoid in St Lucia? Don’t leave for vacation before being prepared!

Planning a trip and wondering, what should I avoid in St Lucia? It’s an important question when visiting any new destination.

I have good news for you – after plenty of trips to the Caribbean islands and chatting with locals, I have compiled a list of everything you should avoid in St Lucia to ensure an unforgettable, safe trip!

What Should You Avoid in St Lucia?

Unique sandy beach in St Lucia with mountains in the background, houses on a hill, forest of trees surrounding it all

While St Luica is considered to be an incredibly safe island, and visitors always come back with fun-filled memories, there are a few things you should avoid in St Lucia. It will just help make your trip even better!

Here are my top tips for traveling to St Lucia and everything you should try to avoid during your stay.

St. Lucia’s tropical climate brings with it intense sun, especially during certain times of the year, with the hottest month being November, when temperatures can reach up to 83°F (29°C).

Photo of a sunburnt arm on a person wearing a white tank top with a plane blue background

So, it’s important to be aware of this when planning your visit to the island. To protect yourself from the strong sun, make sure to apply sunscreen regularly with a high SPF, and find some shade every once in a while during the peak sun hours: between 10am and 4pm. Lastly, consider wearing protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats and lightweight, long-sleeved garments.

By being sun-smart, you can enjoy your time in St. Lucia without the discomfort and health risks associated with sunburn.

Buy the best *approved reef-safe* sunscreen for your trip to St Lucia ↳

2. Forgetting your reef-safe sunscreen

If you take anything from this list, please please please, avoid using sunscreen that is not reef-safe. Many conventional sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate , which can be harmful to coral reefs and marine life.

To protect the island’s delicate marine ecosystems, opt for reef-safe sunscreen that is free from these harmful chemicals. Don’t just look for products labeled as “reef-safe,” “ocean-friendly,” or “biodegradable.” Find a sunscreen that is approved by a reputable source – like Save the Reef .

These sunscreens are formulated to be safe for the environment while still providing effective sun protection for your skin. By choosing reef-safe sunscreen, you can help preserve the beautiful marine life and coral reefs of St. Lucia for generations to come.

And a quick note: purchase before you go! Reef-safe sunscreen isn’t cheap – but it’s even more expensive on the island!

Purchase the best reef-safe sunscreen before you head to St Lucia ↳

3. Don’t bring large bills

When visiting St. Lucia, there’s no need to bring large bills! Especially for smaller purchases and transactions.

While larger establishments may accept major currencies like USD, carrying smaller bills or the local currency (Eastern Caribbean dollars) can be more convenient and practical, particularly for the small businesses, guides, and taxi drivers in St Lucia.

Smaller bills are often preferred for everyday expenses, such as buying snacks, and souvenirs, or using public transportation.

It’s a good idea to exchange some money at a local bank or withdraw smaller bills from ATMs to ensure you have the appropriate currency for your day-to-day expenses during your stay in St. Lucia.

4. Convert USD at a bank for the best value

If you need to exchange currency during your stay in St. Lucia , I highly recommend you do so at a bank or a reputable exchange bureau to get the best value for your money.

Banks offer a better exchange rate compared to other options, such as hotels and street vendors. Exchanging currency at a bank is the best way to know that you are r eceiving a fair rate. It also reduces the risk of being charged higher fees or getting scammed elsewhere.

Before making any currency exchange, I always recommend you compare rates and fees at different banks or exchange bureaus to find the best option for your needs. It’s best to be informed while traveling – especially when it comes to money!

5. Avoid visiting without bug spray

There is NOTHING I hate more than BUGS. They attack me at all hours of the day. It’s super important to make sure you don’t forget your bug spray as tropical climates create the perfect breeding ground for those pesky mosquitoes and other bugs.

To keep those nasty bug bites at bay and protect yourself from any potential diseases, make sure you bring and actually use insect repellent . And as I usually recommend, buy it before getting to the island to save 💰

zoomed in photo of a mosquito on skin. showcasing what should I avoid in St Lucia

Just apply that bug spray to your skin and clothing before you head outside, especially at night when those mosquitoes are out and about. Oh, and they really tend to ruin your night (like me), consider throwing on a light long-sleeved shirt and loose pants to give those bugs even less of a chance to bother you.

Unfortunately, bugs are one of the bad things about St Lucia. You can be prepared and try to stay bug-free and enjoy your time in beautiful St. Lucia!

Buy the best spray and keep the bugs away ↳

6. Low-clearance rental cars

a row of cars parked in a parking lot at sundown

Let’s talk car rentals! Try to avoid low-clearance rental cars , considering the terrain of the mountainous island . We don’t call it the Hawaii of the Caribbean for nothing! Some roads make it challenging for regular cars to navigate comfortably.

To avoid any hassle or potential damage to the rental car, go for a small SUV or jeep instead. They handle different terrains better, giving you a safer and more fun driving experience as you explore the landscapes of St. Lucia.

And, keep in mind that standered taxi fares everywhere can be incredibly costly – renting a car will likely save you money. Plus, it gives you the freedom to explore on your own time without worrying about finding a taxi and waiting for pickups (* which I can’t stand ).

Taxis aren’t all bad – skip to my taxi item if you want my pros and cons.

Check out rental cars at my preferred DiscoverCars.com ↳

7. Hiking the Pitons in the afternoon

Pitons mountains in St Lucia behind grassy hills Caribbean sea in the distance

Avoid hiking the Pitons in the afternoon – it can get suuuper hot and exhausting. The locals (as do I) recommend starting your hike early in the morning, preferably around 8 am, to avoid the peak heat of the day. This will make your hike much more fun; I promise!

It’s also important to stay hydrated, especially in this tropical climate. Bring more water than you think you’ll need to keep yourself refreshed throughout the hike.

Hiking the Pitons can be a challenging task, but so worth it. You have to have a guide with you -you can’t hike it alone. Guides not only provide valuable information about the area and its flora and wildlife but make sure you and your crew are safe throughout the hike.

You can arrange for a guided tour in advance, but it’s not necessary. When you get to the Pitons, local guides will be waiting to take you up if you don’t have a prearranged tour.

Prearrange a Pitons hiking tour ↳

8. Missing your flight

No one wants to miss their flight! The airports on these islands can get a bit backed up sometimes because they’re smaller and have limited facilities. To avoid any travel stress, just make sure you get to the airport well before your departure time.

Some islands, including St. Lucia and Aruba , offer a convenient fast track option to help travelers move through security quickly and efficiently. This fast-track service can save you time and make the airport experience more seamless, so consider taking advantage of it if it’s available for your flight.

By arriving early and considering fast track options , you can ensure a smoother travel experience and avoid any last-minute rushes at the airport.

And of course, don’t fly into the wrong airport – St Lucia is not in the USVI , don’t accidently fly to St Thomas!

Fast track through the airport ↳

9. Area to avoid: Vieux Fort

Is St Lucia nice? Absolutely! But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some areas to avoid in St Lucia. Try to avoid the Vieux Fort area. It’s known for its high crime rate and can be dangerous for tourists. This area is not recommended for visitors due to safety concerns.

Even though it’s best to stay away from Vieux Fort, there are so many other beautiful and safe areas that St. Lucia has to offer.

Always prioritize your safety and well-being while traveling!

10. Area to avoid: Marchand/Graveyard

Marchand in Pavee (Castries) is a neighborhood in Saint Lucia, located northeast of Castries, the capital city. It has gained a reputation for not being very safe for tourists due to its high crime rate. Keep this in mind especially if you’re on a solo travel St. Lucia trip.

To avoid St Lucia tourist deaths, it’s best to avoid visiting this area and instead explore other safer places on the island. St. Lucia has many beautiful and safe locations that offer a wonderful experience without compromising on safety.

11. Stressful Driving (… but taxi costs will add up!)

Taxis in St. Lucia can be more than just a means of transportation; they can also serve as valuable local guides.

With their deep knowledge of the island, taxi drivers can offer insights into the best places to visit, local attractions, and hidden gems that might not be easily accessible by other means of transport.

They are familiar with traffic patterns, which can be particularly helpful in navigating busy roads and ensuring a smooth and efficient journey.

Additionally , driving on the left side of the road can be unfamiliar and challenging if you’re from countries where driving on the right side is the norm. Relying on experienced taxi drivers who are accustomed to driving on the left can provide a safer and less stressful travel experience.

So, while renting a car may offer more flexibility, it’s essential not to overlook the advantages of using taxis as knowledgeable guides who can enhance your exploration of St. Lucia and make your trip more enjoyable and informative.

All that said – taxi costs will add up. It will likely cost you more to take taxis around for a week than to rent a car. Keep this in mind if you decide you don’t want to drive.

12. Wandering around at night

photo of dark alleyway through buildings at night example answering what should I avoid in st lucia

It is best to avoid going out at night, especially if you are alone. While St. Lucia is typically a safe place for tourists, it’s always a good idea to be cautious, especially in unfamiliar areas and at night.

As with any destination, it’s best to stay mindful of your surroundings and avoid poorly lit or isolated areas.

To stay safe while exploring the island, consider staying in well-populated and well-lit areas after dark. Pro tip: This includes the beach! I avoid beaches at night no matter where I am. Water, darkness, and seclusion do not go well together!

When I go out at night, I only do so with a group or a reliable guide who knows the area well.

13. Visiting the Mud Baths mid-day

Excited about visiting the Mud Baths in St. Lucia? Plan your visit early in the morning rather than mid-day. The mud baths can get surprisingly hot as the day progresses, especially under the Caribbean sun.

Going in the morning lets you to experience the baths when they are still comfortably warm and avoid the peak heat of the day.

Additionally, visiting the Mud Baths in the morning means you may encounter fewer crowds, allowing you to enjoy the experience more peacefully. So, make sure to plan your trip to the Mud Baths accordingly to make the most rejuvenating natural attraction in St. Lucia.

And on that note – in my opinion, this is one of the coolest things to do in St Lucia. Yes, it’s touristy, but if you’re here, you have to go!

Plan a land and sea tour to the Mud Baths ↳

14. Avoid the Mud Baths when cruise ships are in port

This is a true but not-so-insider tip. Plan around cruise ships when you get the chance. Specifically, avoid the mud baths when ships are in port.

Celebrity Summit cruise ship at port floating atop clear blue Caribbean water

Cruise ship passengers often flock to the island’s most popular attractions – the Mud Baths are no different. This can lead to crowded conditions and longer waiting times.

If you want a more enjoyable experience, try to schedule your visit to the Mud Baths on days when there aren’t cruise ships in port.

If you can plan strategically, I promise the Mud Baths will be a totally different experience. You’ll be able to fully embrace the benefits of this natural wonder without feeling rushed or overcrowded.

15. Don’t try driving from Soufriere/Castries to Rodney Bay during rush hour

Avoiding driving from Soufriere and Castries to Rodney Bay during rush hour is the best advice I can give you when it comes to driving around the island – and maximizing your vacation time!

The traffic during rush hour will be heavy and slow-moving , especially on steep hills, turning a normally thirty-minute drive into an hour or more.

If possible, plan your travel before rush hour to avoid unnecessary delays and frustration on the roads.

Driving off-peak hours makes for a smoother and more efficient journey, giving you more time to explore everything that St. Lucia has to offer! Rush hour is a great time to plan your dinners – I’d recommend grabbing a Wagyu from Saltwood if you want to splurge one night.

Is Stoufriere St Lucia safe to drive through? Definitely. But, safety and efficiency are key when navigating the island’s roads, so planning your travel wisely will contribute to a stress-free and pleasant trip.

16. Seasickness

Seasickness – my worst enemy. And something I strive to avoid on every trip. If you plan to take boat trips or engage in water-based activities, avoid seasickness at all costs. Consider bringing motion sickness medication before heading out to sea on any boat journeys.

a few people on a catamaran on blue water in front of a dark cloudy sky; what should you avoid in st lucia? seasickness

Additionally, shoot for getting on larger and more stable vessels for boat tours, as they tend to provide a smoother ride. Staying hydrated and avoiding heavy meals before sailing can also help lower the chances of becoming seasick.

If you are prone to motion sickness, take precautions for a comfortable and bring your Dramamine .

Don’t forget your Dramamine ↳

17. Forgetting your passport

Forgetting your passport is something you definitely want to avoid when traveling to St. Lucia. Your passport is the most important identification document, and you will need it to enter and exit the country.

Double and triple-check that you have your passport and any required travel visas. Keep your passport in a secure place, such as a hotel safe, when you don’t need it. Personally, I carry mine in my belt bag everywhere I go.

Losing your passport or leaving it behind can cause significant travel issues and may require you to visit your embassy or consulate to secure a replacement, which can be a time-consuming and stressful process.

So, always remember to bring your passport and keep it safe throughout your trip!

Snag the cutest passport wallet to keep all your important stuff in one place ↳

18. Don’t leave valuables on the beach

While it may seem harmless while everyone is having fun on the beach, leaving valuables on the beach is something you should avoid in St. Lucia. While the beaches in St. Lucia are picture (and movie ) perfect and inviting, be mindful of your belongings.

Unfortunately, heavy tourist areas attract opportunistic thieves. Leaving valuables unattended on the beach can make them an easy target.

A little traveling tip I can give you – get a waterproof and sand-proof beach bag that you can keep with you at all times. And of course, there’s no need to carry expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash at the beach anyway.

If you really do need some valuables at the beach, consider a locker or safe deposit box to store valuable items while you enjoy the beach or play in the water.

19. Don’t carry or wear valuables

While the island is generally safe for tourists, like any destination, exercise caution and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself.

To protect your valuables for a worry-free trip, leave the expensive jewelry, excessive cash, and valuable electronics, such as expensive cameras or laptops, in a secure place at your hotel or rental.

Why do you need that stuff don’t the island anyway? You’re on a beach vacation – live the island life!

A small amount of cash and your credit card will get you through most days. And of course, a copy of your identification. Use a belt bag or a secure pouch to keep your belongings close to your body and less visible to others.

Staying mindful of your surroundings and avoiding flashy displays of wealth can help minimize the risk of theft . Keep your stay in St Lucia safe and fun.

Stay trendy and secure with the best belt bag! ↳

20. Leave your heels and dressy clothes at home

I’m no fashionista, but please, leave your fancy clothes and heels at home. Especially if you plan on exploring the island and doing lots of activities.

The terrain can be uneven, so walking in heels is not ideal. Instead, go for comfy footwear like sandals , sneakers , or hiking shoes . You’ll need them for all the outdoor adventures and walking around. I also love my Chacos for island treks since they work well for hiking and swimming.

For your clothes , keep it light and casual. Choose breathable materials that will keep you cool in the tropical climate.

St. Lucia is pretty laid-back, so you won’t need to dress up too much. But, if you want to check out some fancier dining or nightlife spots, it’s good to have one or two nicer outfits.

Just remember to pack versatile clothes that work for both the outdoors and leisure activities. That way, you’ll have a super comfortable and fun time on this gorgeous Caribbean island!

21. Hiking the Gros Pitons Alone

Okay, so you don’t have a choice but to avoid this, because you’re not allowed to hike the Gros Pitons alone! If you don’t go with a tour group, trained guides who know the trail, terrain, and potential risks associated with the hike will be waiting at the bottom of the trailhead when you arrive.

A local guide can provide valuable insights, ensure your safety, and enhance your overall hiking experience by pointing out interesting facts about the surroundings and helping you navigate any difficult sections of the trail.

girl sitting atop a ledge overlooking a forest in the caribbean

Additionally, hiking with a group or a guide can be more enjoyable as you share the experience with others and have someone to assist you in case of any emergencies.

While I understand that Gros Piton is a significant landmark in St. Lucia, and hiking it is an incredible adventure, it’s still important to prioritize St Lucia safety and follow the laws that help protect the island’s famous attraction. There are tons of land and sea tours , so don’t worry about finding a good one.

The Pitons hike costs $50 (as of 2023) – bring cash with you when you.

Plan transportation and a guide ahead of time ↳

22. Sticking to all the touristy excursions

Exploring off-the-beaten path options in St. Lucia can offer a more unique and authentic experience compared to sticking to only the touristy excursions.

Places like La Tille waterfall , Sapphire Jungle Spa, and Jerusalem Springs, as well as local farmers markets like Fond Doux, Crystals, and Green Fig , provide opportunities to connect with the local culture, immerse in nature, and discover hidden gems that may not be as well-known but are equally rewarding.

It’s a chance to break away from the crowds and create memorable moments that truly showcase the beauty and charm of St. Lucia.

23. Avoid getting your credit card stolen

credit card being tapped on a credit card reader with a plain orange background

Stay on your guard and take some precautions to keep your credit card safe. Stick to ATMs in safe places, like inside banks, and avoid badly lit or remote areas .

Make sure your credit card is in a secure spot, like a belt bag or hidden pouch, and never leave it out or visible in public.

If you can, use credit cards with a chip and PIN for extra security – and let your credit card company know you’re be traveling so they don’t deactivate it!

Be careful with public Wi-Fi because it might not be safe for your sensitive info or online transactions .

Keep an eye on your credit card statements to catch any fishy charges ASAP.

And lastly, have a list of emergency contacts handy, including your credit card company’s helpline, in case of loss or theft. By staying alert and taking these steps, you can lower the risk of credit card theft in St. Lucia.

On that note – is St Lucia expensive? Yep! So you definitely don’t want to lose your money.

24. Leave anything in sight in your rental car

If you have a rental car, avoid leaving any valuable items visible inside your rental car.

Car break-ins sometimes happen at popular tourist attractions in St. Lucia, so take your belongings with you when you leave the vehicle or secure them in the trunk.

You can reduce the risk of theft (and having your rental car broken in to) by simply being cautious and taking steps to secure your belongings.

25. Swimming alone

avoid swimming alone in St lucia - photo of a girl swimming at the shoreline of the ocean

Prioritize your safety! Avoid swimming alone in the ocean. While the island boasts beautiful beaches and inviting waters, swimming and snorkeling alone can be risky, especially in unfamiliar areas or areas with strong currents.  Also, if you’re looking for long white stretches of sand, I’d suggest checking on Grand Cayman or Turks and Caicos .

It’s always best to swim in designated swimming areas where lifeguards are present, and it’s also a good idea to swim with a friend or in the company of others. If you’re with a group, let someone know you’re going into the water before you go.

Is it safe to swim in St Lucia? Overall, yes! But, stong currents can take a vacation from fun to fatal very quickly – even if you’re a strong swimmer. And don’t worry too much about sharks – attacks are rare.

26. Dehydration

Avoid dehydration!! The Caribbean climate can be hot and humid . To prevent dehydration, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you’re engaging in outdoor activities, hiking, or spending time in the sun.  And let’s be honestly, that’s what your whole vacation will likely entail!

glass water bottle sitting at the shoreline in the ocean waves lapping in

Carry a water bottle with you and stay hydrated to avoid the side effects of dehydration, such as dizziness, fatigue, and heat-related illnesses. Be aware of the symptoms of dehydration to help you avoid a severe case.

Additionally, limit your intake of alcohol and caffeinated beverages , as they can contribute to dehydration.

By taking these simple precautions, you can fully enjoy your time on the island while keeping yourself healthy and energized.

27. Going to St Lucia without insurance

Don’t plan a trip to St Lucia without insurance. Island travel carries several potential risks – from hurricane season/ rainy season in August – October and hospital trips to lost baggage and travel delays. Even if you’re visiting in January , you might want to protect your trip anyway!

Make sure to review the policy to ensure it suits your needs, providing peace of mind and enjoyable travel without worries.

I recommend comparing travel insurance plans with Travel Insurance Master ↳

Is it Safe to Drive in St Lucia?

If you’re wondering, is St Lucia a safe island to drive on, the short answer is yes !

This beautiful island boasts stunning landscapes and thrilling adventures, and driving gives you the freedom to explore it all at your own pace.

However, I have to note that the mountainous terrain and some poorly structured roads can make the ride bumpy .

I do not advise driving with a low clearance vehicle. If you do, chat with a local and figure out what routes you should avoid. Definitely go for a 4-wheel drive or larger vehicle for the best experience driving in Saint Lucia .

Additionally, St. Lucians drive on the left side of the road, which can take a bit of getting used to.

But don’t worry, the locals are friendly and always willing to offer directions. Just take it slow and steady, and you’ll soon be navigating like a pro.

Ultimately, driving in St Lucia is a wonderful way to see the island’s hidden gems and natural beauty – as long as you’re aware, follow directions, and take the necessary safety measures.

Best Area to Stay in St Lucia

The North Side of St Lucia (Castries, Marigot Bay, Rodney Bay) seems to be the more popular areas to stick to; and then of course Soufriere on the southwest side of the island. The sunsets here are to die for.

Gros Islet/Rodney Bay is popular for villas and vacation rentals while Marigot and Rodney and known for all-inclusives and hotels.

Soufriere is known for luxury resorts like Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain Resort ( highly recommend – probably the best hotel on the island, possibly one of the best in the Caribbean).

The best part of St Lucia to stay is the place you want to be the most! Decide where you want to spend most of your time before deciding.

Best St Lucia Beaches Near the Cruise Port

st lucia beaches near cruise port

The port of Castries sees thousands of tourist leave the cruise ships every week to explore the exotic Caribbean Island of St Lucia . If you’re looking for the best beaches to spend the day within a short distance from the port, we’ve got you covered!

Choc Beach – A Hidden Haven

Choc Beach provides a sense of tranquility and an authentic local beach experience. It is a quiet beach offering plenty of shade as it backs onto a woodland area making it an ideal place to bring a towel and a picnic to chill out for the day. Despite its proximity to the port, it is not a tourist beach meaning you can expect a nearly empty beach during the week and locals on the weekend!

st lucia beaches near cruise port

Getting there:

By taxi, Choc Beach is approximately a 5-10 minute drive from the Castries port and costs around $10. It can be seen by the port so if you’re feeling energetic, the walk takes roughly 30 minutes. If you’re venturing by car, you can park by the main road like the locals do and if you’re coming by bus, you can take the 1A route, easily located in the port.

Food and Drink:

There aren’t any restaurants on the beach, however, a short trip across the road to the Gablewoods Mall will provide you with reasonably priced local food! Try the Roti and fish for an authentic St Lucian dining experience!

Activities:

Paddleboarding and kayaking are available and you can even venture out a short distance to Rat Island for a brief hike to explore. The beach boasts clear waters making it a perfect location for swimming, so bring along a snorkel and enjoy the tranquility.

  • Extremely close distance from the port
  • Uncrowded and calm

Lots of shade

  • A chilled place to bring the family for a beach picnic
  • Little, if any peddlers
  • Limited watersports activities
  • Sun loungers unavailable to hire
  • Not for those wanting a large selection of restaurants to pick from
  • No restrooms along this part of the coast

Reduit Beach – Vistas and Vibes

The white sand of Reduit beach stretches for a mile along the North coast with stunning views in all directions. Its calm waters make it popular for families with younger children and overall it’s a clean and safe place to visit with so much going on by way of restaurants, bars and watersports, you’ll be spoilt for choice! A beach umbrella and two chairs will set you back around $20 but avoid settling down in the middle section of the beach where all of the cruise tourists are dropped off as this part is the busiest.

st lucia beaches near cruise port

A 20-minute cab journey from the cruise port will take you to the hugely popular Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay for roughly $25 one way.

There is a huge selection of places to eat and drink whilst visiting Reduit Beach. Spinnakers restaurant is easy to find and has a fantastic selection of Caribbean and international cuisine from barbecue and seafood to vegan options. Marie’s Shack is a casual beachside eatery for those seeking barbecued local cuisine.

If you’d like to remain in the comfort of your lounger there are numerous vendors selling refreshments and food on the beach. Local vendor Shirley sells traditional Rotis or for a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage you can get a natural juice from another vendor named Yvonne.

Speedboats, jet skis, wakeboarding, parasailing…the list is endless! Treat the kids to an afternoon at Splash Island Waterpark, a thrilling obstacle course located just off the shore complete with a trampoline, climbing walls, waterslides and much more! Prices begin at $26 per person for a two-hour pass and you can even purchase deals which include meals and beach chairs.

  • A short drive from the port.
  • Selection of places to rent sun loungers.
  • An abundance of options for food and beverages.
  • Plenty of activities to entertain kids.
  • There are a lot of peddlers attempting to sell you their products, which can be harassing for those looking to relax in peace.
  • Can sometimes get overcrowded due to its popularity with tourists.

Marigot Bay – An Authentic Adventure

Situated on the western side of the island, the beach at Marigot Bay is the furthest on this list from Castries port but avoids being overrun by tourists. It may seem a little out of the way but for those seeking sun and serenity and an authentic Caribbean village, this is a total paradise. It is also one of the locations of the Pirates of the Caribbean film and Rex Harrison’s Dr. Doolittle!

st lucia beaches near cruise port

A taxi ride to Marigot Bay beach will set you back around $40 each way and will take 40 mins to travel from the port. It is best to pre-book taxis to save stressing over the return to the port. It is possible to travel by local minivans, however, this is not as time-effective and there is some trekking involved once you arrive.

On the south side of the Bay is a selection of waterfront restaurants such as Hurricane Hole, Chateau Mygo, and the Mangrove. You can take the free ferry over to DOOLittles where there are menu options for the whole family from seafood to burgers and pizza. If you feel like splashing some cash, Masala Bay is an incredible Indian/Asian fusion cuisine you will never forget! There are also a fair few local food vendors to make fun beverages for your kids or grab a quick bite!

Watersport activities are up on the north side at Cosmo’s and you can purchase guided or unguided snorkeling tours or rent kayaks, Hobie Cats, and paddleboards to explore the mangroves! You can even hike up the hill to enjoy the incredible views the Bay has to offer.

  • Fewer tourists.
  • Picturesque
  • A huge variety of activities
.
  • Further distance from the port .
  • Loungers and umbrellas can only be rented from local vendors and are supposedly limited
.

Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island National Park is located on the northern end of the island and is situated near Splash Island Water Park , so there are tons of activities for all the family. The beach boasts crystal clear waters and is ideal for snorkeling enthusiasts. On the grounds, there are two restaurants, a rum bar and there is a floating bar offering refreshing tropical drinks.

Take a short scenic hike to the top of Pigeon Island and visit Fort Rodney and Signal Peak for just an $8 entrance fee, where you will be greeted with incredible views of St Lucia and its neighboring island Martinique.

st lucia beaches near cruise port

Getting to Pigeon Island will set you back around $30 on way in a taxi. However, I would recommend splitting it up with Reduit Beach as they are right next to each other, this way you get to visit two different beaches and your kids will get to visit Splash Island Water Park too.

Located on the beachfront you will find Jambe De Bois, offer fresh food to cater for every taste, they offer everything from salads, pasta dishes, fresh fish and chicken fillets. There’s plenty of shade, lots of seating and even live music. You can take a quick shuttle bus or taxi to Reduit Beach where you will find a wide selection of different restaurants at the Gros Islet Quarter.

There’s plenty to do at Pigeon Island so you won’t get bored here, take the short 15-minute hike to the top of Fort Rodney for some stunning views and great family photo opportunities, the entrance fee is only $8. Other activities include snorkeling and a Segway tour.

If you really want to explore the ocean in style then why not try a Sea Trek Tour, simply pop on a helmet and literally walk under the water keeping you head fully dry!

Beach chairs can be purchased for approximately $5-7, although there are plenty of grass and shaded areas to lay your beach towel down.

Lots of activities

Nice short hike with stunning views

Great for snorkeling

Lots of culture & history

La Toc Beach

La Toc Beach is one of the most secluded and tranquil beaches in St Lucia, this stunning beach is mostly dominated by the Sandals Golf Resort , however, don’t worry as there is public access . The atmosphere is more relaxed at La Toc due to being hidden amongst the Sandals Resort. La Toc Beach features a nice long stretch of golden sand and beautiful blue waters. So, if you’re looking for a peaceful setting where you can build sand castles, go for a swim and grab a bite to eat in a relaxed environment then La Toc Beach is for you.

st lucia beaches near cruise port

You should probably expect to pay around $20 to get to La Toc Beach in a taxi. Be sure to ask your driver to take you to the public entrance to the beach, you can, however, go through Sandals as it’s a public beach and they should let you through for access.

If you get peckish at the beach then don’t worry as there are a good selection of restaurants to choose from, both locally and at the nearby establishments. Why not try some Asian cuisine at Kimonos, or dine in one of the many restaurants at the Sandals Resort? Personally, I try to venture out a little more mainly due to the prices of food at resorts and to avoid any awkwardness with me not being a guest.

If you’re feeling active then why not play a round of golf at no better than the Sandals Resort or see if you can hire snorkel equipment or kayaks from the resort.

Fewer tourists

Calm, relaxed atmosphere

Large stretch of golden sand to run on build sand castles

Be careful, the waves can get rough

Not a lot of activities on offer

No toilets on the beach

Our St Lucia Holiday

During our Caribbean Cruise, we couldn’t wait to visit St Lucia, it was the one we were looking forward to the most and with good reason.

We hired a private island tour with Christopher Taxi Service  for the whole day which cost $180 for the three of us. We were met at the cruise port by our driver and were presented with a beautiful air-conditioned car with a cooler full of beer and soft drinks! A lovely touch!

sugar beach with toddlers

Here is our itinerary we decided to do:

  • Sugar Beach / Jalousie Beach
  • Sulphur Springs
  • Tel Paul Nature Trail
  • Piton viewpoints

The drive to the Pitons from the port took about 1 hour and 20 minutes, yes its a long drive, but it’s a beautiful one with regular stops and some stunning picture opportunities. I know it’s not close to the port, however, it was the most amazing trip we have probably ever done and well worth the drive, especially to see and walk around the famous Pitons.

If you would like to read more about our trip to St Lucia you can check it out here .

Essential travel gear

Here is some essential travel gear that we never travel without:

  • Water shoes:  It’s important to protect your feet in the water, so I would recommend getting a pair of water shoes for everyone, especially the little ones. You will be able to run on the beach and even go swimming in the water with them.
  • MiFi device:  Don’t pay for over the odds data roaming abroad, simply get one of these handy portable MiFi devices and stay connected where ever you are and save yourself a fortune on a fast reliable internet connection.
  • Portable charger:  We never travel anywhere without a Power Bank , charge multiple devices and iPhones at the same time and up to 7 times faster. Never run out of battery again on your travels, and there’s no need for a socket! It’s totally portable.
  • Toddler Backpack : Why not give your little one their own toddler backpack when traveling to keep all their toys in, our son has one and he loves the sense of responsibility. He also has a Ride on Suitcase which he loves flying around the airport in, provides hours of entertainment.
  • Backpack for back pain : With all the walking up hills, cobbled streets and hiking you will need a good backpack, one that will help ease the load on your back, here are the best backpacks for back pain , that will be perfect for walking around Santorini.
  • Bug spray: As you may know, I get bitten a lot on holiday, too much in fact. So, I never travel anywhere without some mosquito spray . I even have to wear it at home here in the UK when I take my dogs for a walk to protect against other bugs and horse flies.
  • Snorkel gear : What holiday wouldn’t be complete without going snorkeling, we recently purchased the 360 degrees all in one snorkel and it really is amazing, you get such a better view and there’s no separate pipe that leaks water into your mouth! Here’s a list of our best snorkel sets .

Something to note is that public transportation in St. Lucia rarely runs on schedule as buses will wait until they are completely full before leaving.

It’s highly recommended to travel by taxis which are always readily available at the port or rent a car to travel to the places on this list and wherever you’re going, allow more time to travel to and from Castries port. Enjoy your visit to the beautiful island of St Lucia!

Veteran Teacher Cuthbert Popo Retires After 42 Years

spot_img

It was a bitter-sweet occasion last week as the Vide Bouteille Primary School bade farewell to a man who had become an institution, marking the end of an era.

Cuthbert Popo had dedicated forty-two years of service to the school’s students as a Physical Education teacher.

He also started the institution’s drumming group.

The group has played at jazz festivals, schools, and other locations throughout Saint Lucia.

Principal Lyrill Arthur-Stanislaus observed that Popo worked tirelessly to bring Vide Bouteille Primary School a rich cultural heritage and counsel and encourage students.

On Friday, the school put on a cultural show in his honour.

“We are so thankful for this gentleman and we sish him all the best,” the principal stated.

Popo acknowledged experiencing mixed emotions at the event in his honour.

“I have had many students passing through my hands,” he recalled, while modestly admitting that although their teacher, he had learned much from them.

“I think I have learnt more than I have taught them,” Popo asserted, adding that teachers do not know everything.

He declared that teachers could learn a lot by listening to students.

Popo also expressed an interest in supporting the nineteen-year-old drumming initiative he co-founded.

He said he would miss the school, the students, and the teachers.

As far as Popo is concerned, he had been attending school for forty-two years.

“Every time I get up, I say I am going to school, I never say I am going to work,” he said.

In this regard, the veteran educator said he regarded his retirement as a graduation.
