Use Points for Domestic Flights

Newcomers to award travel tend to focus on grabbing credit cards with the airlines they fly the most. But those of us who have been traveling on points know that that is not the best move. It turns out that credit card points, such as Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards give us so much flexibility that we can use these points to fly with all the major US airlines. So in this ToP Guide, we show you how to use points for domestic flights with the major US airlines. We go through our favorite programs to use for booking flights with American, Delta, United, and more.

Tips for Booking Domestic Award Flights

Most of the programs discussed below in our guide on how to use points for domestic flights are partner airlines. This means you will be redeeming one airline's miles to fly on a different airline (like using British Airways Avios to fly on an American Airlines flight). For seats to be bookable through a partner, you will need to find saver availability. Partners only have access to each other's saver awards. This is why sometimes you will see award availability with the operating airline (American) but when you search British Airways, no flights show up. That's because there is no saver availability at that time. To learn more about saver availability, check out this post .

When it comes to pricing out an award, keep in mind the type of award chart that each program uses. Distance-based award charts are great for non-stop short-haul flights. But if your trip includes a connection, the cost of that award might go up by a lot. Meanwhile, zone-based award charts offer great value for long distance flights like a transcontinental trip from California to the East Coast.

Use Points for Domestic Flights

In choosing between which program use points for domestic flights, keep in mind each program's advantages and disadvantages. Of course the cost of the flight is crucial. Some airlines charge more for some flights than others. But also consider each program's cancellation policy if your plans are still up in the air.

Lastly, consider which bank you will be transferring points to book your domestic flight. For example, if you have a lot of Membership Rewards but not as many Ultimate Rewards, you might want to pick an airline that is an Amex transfer partner instead of Chase. And remember to consider transfer bonuses–they can help lower the cost of an award and save you some points. You can always double check transfer partners with our handy Partner Transfer Tool , and you can check current transfer bonuses with our transfer bonus tracker .

Alaska Airlines & American Airlines

Alaska and American are both members of the Oneworld alliance, which also includes British Airways, Qantas, and Qatar Airways, to name a few. This means you can use miles from any of these programs to book a flight with either Alaska or American.

My favorite programs to use points for domestic flights with Alaska and American are British Airways and Qantas. Both websites are easy to use, but they each have their advantages and disadvantages.

how to Use Points for Domestic Flights

Booking Domestic Flights with British Airways Avios

  • Award costs: starting at 8,250 for economy, 16,500 for business
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase
  • Website to search: British Airways or Qantas

British Airways has a distance-based award chart. This means that the longer the flight distance, the more British Airways Avios you will need to use to book your domestic flights. This makes non-stop flights a better deal than connecting flights when redeeming Avios. Here are the costs to book flights on Alaska or American with Avios:

One of the best things about British Airways Avios is that they are extremely easy to earn. You can transfer points from Chase, Amex, and Capital One, among others. British Airways often has transfer bonuses from many of these banks as well.

You can search availability and book your domestic flight directly on British Airways' website. We even have a step-by-step guide showing you how.

Booking Domestic Flights with Qantas

  • Award costs: starting at 8,000/18,400 points for economy/business for flights on American, 10,000/20,000 points for economy/business for flights on Alaska
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Capital One, Citi
  • Website to search: Qantas

Qantas is another good option for booking domestic flights on Alaska or American. Australia's flag carrier has different award charts for its many partners, so the cost of your flight will differ depending on whether you're looking at Alaska or American. Qantas' award charts are available on this page .

You can search and book directly on Qantas' website. Qantas' website is particularly helpful for searching award availability because it has a 30-day calendar view. This allows you to search for awards 30 days at a time, which is much more efficient than British Airways' website.

how to use points to fly Delta

Delta Air Lines

Delta is a member of SkyTeam, which also includes airlines Virgin Atlantic and Air France/KLM among its members. Both programs are great ways to use points to book domestic flights with Delta.

Booking Domestic Flights with Virgin Atlantic

  • Award costs: starting at 7,500 for economy, 21,000 for business
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Bilt, Chase, Citi
  • Website to search: Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is my favorite method for booking Delta flights with points. Their website is pretty easy to use and they have the best phone reps in the business if you ever need additional help.

Virgin Atlantic also has a distance-based award chart for Delta, which you can access here . To book, you can search and book directly on Virgin Atlantic's website.

What makes Virgin Atlantic such a great option for booking Delta is that they are a transfer partner with every major bank and regularly offer transfer bonuses .

Booking Domestic Flights with Flying Blue

  • Award costs: dynamic
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase, Citi
  • Website to search: Virgin Atlantic, Air France/KLM

Flying Blue, the joint loyalty program for Air France and KLM, is also a great option for booking Delta flights. Even though Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing (meaning prices can fluctuate), award costs are usually on par with Virgin Atlantic.

To search for availability, I prefer to use Virgin Atlantic's website, which is more user-friendly and reliable. You also don't have to log in to search for availability with Virgin, but you do with Flying Blue.

how to use points to fly to Hawaii

Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian offers multiple non-stop flights to/from all over the continental US. In addition to have a couple of direct transfer partners, they also have a partnership with JetBlue.

Booking Domestic Flights with Hawaiian

  • Award costs: zone-based
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Bilt
  • Website to search: Hawaiian

Award costs vary based on the zones you're flying. Hawaiian has separate award charts for various zones, such as intra-Hawaii flights or flights to/from the West Coast or East Cost. Hawaiian's award charts are available on this page .

Hawaiian's website is straightforward and having Amex as a transfer partner makes life easy. The biggest challenge with Hawaiian is finding saver availability, especially for business class, which is scarce.

Booking Domestic Flights with JetBlue

  • Award costs: combination of distance- and zone-based
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Chase, Citi
  • Website to search: JetBlue or Hawaiian

JetBlue does not have a published award chart for awards on Hawaiian. Pricing varies based on distance flown as well as destinations. This means that connecting flights will cost significantly more than non-stop flights. Pricing isn't unreasonable but also not terrible. For example, non-stop from LAX to Maui (OGG) is 20,000 miles one-way in economy. A non-stop flight from JFK to Honolulu (HNL) costs 37,900 points one-way in economy.

To search points availability for domestic flights, you can either search directly on JetBlue's website or search for saver awards on Hawaiian's website first. I think JetBlue's website is easy and efficient enough to use directly, but preferences may vary. If searching for business class (which Hawaiian refers to as first class), then I would use Hawaiian's website first.

how to use points to fly Delta

JetBlue Airways

JetBlue has multiple transfer partners, but it also has a partnership with Qatar Airways through which you can redeem Qatar Airways Avios for flights on JetBlue.

  • Award costs: revenue-based
  • Website to search: JetBlue

JetBlue's TrueBlue loyalty program uses a revenue-based approach for redemptions for. This means that the number of points required for domestic flights is directly tied to the cash cost of that flight. With this, you can expect to redeem JetBlue points for around 1.3 or 1.4 cents per point , which is not particularly good value for transferable points like Ultimate Rewards or Membership Rewards. In fact, if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve , you would even be better off redeeming Ultimate Rewards directly through the Chase portal at 1.5 cents per point in this case.

Booking Domestic Flights with Qatar Airways

  • Award costs: starting at 6,000 Avios in economy, 12,500 Avios in business
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Citi*
  • Website to search: Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways Avios are easier to accumulate than it may first appear. While you can transfer points from Amex and Citi to Qatar, you can also transfer Avios between British Airways and Qatar. This means you can transfer points from other banks to British Airways and then transfer them to Qatar. You just need to make sure to link your accounts together on this page .

To search and book, on the Spend my Avios page make sure to select “Flights with other partners” and choose JetBlue from the dropdown menu:

use points for domestic flights

Southwest Airlines

Southwest is rather limited when it comes to redeeming credit card points for domestic flights. Chase is their only transfer partner and Southwest does not have partnerships with any other airline.

Southwest's Rapid Rewards loyalty program uses a revenue-based approach for redemptions, just like JetBlue. The number of points needed for an award flight is based off the cash cost of that flight. With this, you can expect to redeem Southwest points for around 1.2 cents per point , which is not good value when transferring Ultimate Rewards from Chase. In fact, even redeeming Ultimate Rewards through the Chase portal at 1.25 cents per point with a Chase Sapphire Preferred (or 1.5 cpp with a Chase Sapphire Reserve ) would be a better deal.

use points for domestic flights

United Airlines

United has a couple of transfer partners, but the biggest upside to booking flights on United is leveraging its many Star Alliance partners. Star Alliance is the largest airline alliance in the world by number of airlines, so it's no surprise that you have lots of good options for use points for domestic flights with United.

Booking Domestic Flights with Air Canada Aeroplan

  • Award costs: starting at 6,000 points in economy, 15,000 points in business
  • Website to search: Aeroplan

Air Canada's Aeroplan program is one of my favorite ways to book United domestic flights with points. Aeroplan's award chart is a combination of zone- and distance-based. You can access their award charts here . Award pricing for travel within North America is very reasonable, capped at 22,500 points in economy for flights longer than 2,750 miles.

Searching and booking is a painless process through Aeroplan's website. But Aeroplan does charge a booking fee of $39 for award bookings with partner airlines.

Booking Domestic Flights with Avianca LifeMiles

  • Award costs: starting at 7,500 miles in economy, 15,0000 miles in business*
  • Website to search: Aeroplan, United

Avianca LifeMiles is another good option to use points for domestic flights with United. Avianca uses a zone-based award chart that divides the continental US into 3 zones. Travel within each of these zones costs just 7,500 miles in economy one-way. Flights between any of the 3 zones cost just 12,500 miles in economy one-way. This means you can take a transcontinental flight from New York to California for just 12,500 miles in economy.

Unfortunately, Hawaii is a separate zone in the LifeMiles award chart. Flights between anywhere in the continental US and Hawaii are listed at 22,500 miles one-way in economy and 40,000 miles in business. This is still not a bad deal for folks on the East Coast.

That said, the LifeMiles website is not the most user friendly for using points for domestic flights. For starters, despite having a published award chart, award costs can fluctuate by 1,000 points here or there. Sometimes the change is in your favor and the award actually costs less than it should.

But all in all, Avianca is a solid option for booking flights on United, especially for longer flights.

how to use points to fly on United

Booking Domestic Flights with Singapore Airlines

  • Award costs: 14,000 miles in economy, 26,000 in business
  • Transfer partners: Amex, Capital One, Chase, Citi
  • Website to search: Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airline's KrisFlyer program has a decent zone-based award chart for Star Alliance redemptions. Singapore lumps all of the US (minus Hawaii) into a single zone. You can access the award chart here .

A fixed zone-based award chart for the entire US is good for booking long distance domestic flights with points, but not as helpful for short-haul ones. So if you're looking to fly from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Singapore won't offer you the best deal. But if you're trying to fly across the country, then 14,000 miles one-way in economy isn't a bad deal at all.

Singapore's website is quite intuitive and the booking process is seamless. Just remember that transfers to Singapore from many banks are usually not instant and can take up to a couple of days.

Booking Domestic Flights with Turkish Airlines

  • Award costs: 10,000 miles in economy, 20,000 in business
  • Transfer partners: Bilt, Capital One, Citi

Turkish still offers good value for using points for domestic flights on United despite its latest devaluation . 10,000 miles one-way for an economy flight to Hawaii from anywhere in the US , is a great deal. Turkish has a fixed award chart (instead of distance-based), so the cost of your flight will not change regardless of whether your itinerary includes any connections. The downside of booking with Turkish is having to deal with their lackluster call center if anything happens with your flight or you need to make any changes.

Booking Domestic Flights with United Airlines

  • Transfer partners: Bilt, Chase
  • Website to search: United

United has dynamic pricing for award flights on its own metal, which means points costs fluctuate regularly. Every once in a while you can find a particularly cheap flight with United miles that is even cheaper than on Aeroplan or another partner, but that does not happen very often.

Use Points for Domestic Flights: ToP Thoughts

Credit card points offer incredible flexibility for booking flights with US carriers. This all goes to show that you don't need a co-branded American Airlines or Delta card to book award flights with those airlines. This is just one of the many reasons why transferable currencies like Ultimate Rewards and Membership Rewards are so much more valuable and useful than airline miles.

The 10 Best Domestic Airlines in 2022

The best domestic airlines, according to Travel + Leisure readers, prioritize safety and customer service.

house of travel domestic flights

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite domestic airlines .

We'll be honest — 2021 was a tough year for domestic airlines, between staff shortages, cancellations galore, and long customer-service line wait times. So when T+L readers voted on the best domestic airlines, their top choices went above and beyond to do their best by passengers. "I am not in love with any airline right now," said one voter, who praised JetBlue (No. 3) for "doing the best job they can."

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, Travel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. In the airlines category, readers rated carriers on cabin comfort, in-flight service, food, customer service, and value.

It's been 12 years since we saw 10 airlines instead of five on this list, thanks to the growing number of carriers in the U.S. One of the newcomers even made the list: Breeze Airways, which only launched in May 2021 , took the No. 2 spot. "Breeze Airways is very affordable. The legroom was nice and the attendants were friendly and helpful," one T+L reader said. "Very easy to book and pay for tickets online. I even accrued a few dollars to apply to my next ticket."

The addition of Breeze Airways bumped one of the regulars out of the top half of the rankings: Southwest Airlines, a WBA Hall of Fame honoree, came in at No. 6 after having claimed a top-five spot for more than a decade.

The other airlines at the top of the list include Delta (No. 5), which has held that spot since 2019; JetBlue, also a WBA Hall of Fame honoree; and at No. 1, Hawaiian Airlines, another WBA Hall of Famer.

Read on to learn why readers picked Hawaiian Airlines as the World's Best domestic airline and see the full list of winners.

1. Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines has ascended to the No. 1 spot on the World's Best domestic airlines list for the first time ever — despite ranking in the top five for more than a decade. "Hawaiian Airlines delivers true Hawaiian hospitality. They used to say Hawaii starts with the flight, and that is indeed true," one WBA respondent said. While most T+L readers focused their attention on Hawaiian's long-haul flights — and particularly its meals, which are even served in economy — some noted the airline's excellence on inter-island hops, too. There's only one complaint: "Serve more mainland cities," one voter implored.

Cdc says travel is safe for fully vaccinated people, but opposes nonessential trips.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its domestic travel guidance for fully vaccinated people on Friday, lifting certain requirements while continuing to advise mitigation measures like mask-wearing and hand-washing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its domestic travel guidance for fully vaccinated people, lifting certain testing and self-quarantine requirements and recommending precautions like wearing a mask and avoiding crowds. But health officials continue to discourage nonessential travel, citing a sustained rise in cases and hospitalizations.

The CDC updated its website on Friday to reflect the latest scientific evidence, writing that "people who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine can travel safely within the United States."

The announcement comes less than a month after the CDC first released updated guidance about gatherings for fully vaccinated people, which it described as a "first step" toward returning to everyday activities.

Air Travel Is Opening Up Again, But That Doesn't Mean The Pandemic Is Over

The CDC considers someone fully vaccinated two weeks after they receive the last dose of vaccine. Those individuals will no longer need to get tested before or after travel unless their destination requires it, and do not need to self-quarantine upon return.

The new guidance means, for example, that fully vaccinated grandparents can fly to visit their healthy grandkids without getting a COVID-19 test or self-quarantining as long as they follow other recommended measures while traveling, according to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.

Those measures include wearing a mask over their nose and mouth, staying 6 feet from others and washing their hands frequently. Masks are required on all planes traveling into, within or out of the U.S., under an executive order issued by President Biden.

But Walensky, speaking at a White House COVID-19 Response Team briefing on Friday, nonetheless discouraged all nonessential travel, citing a continued increase in the seven-day average of cases and hospitalizations.

"While we believe that fully vaccinated people can travel at low risk to themselves, CDC is not recommending travel at this time due to the rising number of cases," Walensky said.

CDC Director Fears 'Impending Doom' If U.S. Opens Too Quickly

She said that while vaccinated people can do more things safely, most Americans are not yet fully vaccinated. Those who are not must have a negative test 1-3 days before they travel under CDC guidance. They must either get tested 3-5 days after they return and self-quarantine for 7 days, or self-quarantine for 10 days with no test.

Walensky said on Monday that there is more travel occurring now than throughout the pandemic, including the winter holidays. She acknowledged that people have been looking to get away over spring break or take advantage of what they perceive as a "relative paucity in cases," and she said the country was seeing an uptick in cases as a result.

"The thing that's different this time is that we actually have it in our power to be done with the scale of the vaccination," she said. "And that will be so much slower if we have another surge to deal with as well."

The U.S. is already seeing an uptick in domestic travel, and many Americans are looking to book trips in the coming months in what experts described to NPR as a sign of "clear pent up demand for travel."

As the country's supply of COVID-19 doses has grown, so has Biden's goal for the number of shots in arms during his first 100 days, doubling the target to 200 million by the end of this month. Many states have already expanded eligibility to all adults or are set to do so in the coming weeks, well ahead of the president's May 1 deadline.

According to NPR's vaccine tracker , 16.9% of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated, and 30% has had at least one dose. Researchers estimate that 70% to 85% of the country would need to have immunity for COVID-19 to stop spreading through communities.

International travel restrictions remain

The CDC is not lifting travel restrictions barring the entry of most non-U.S. citizens from places including China, Brazil, South Africa and parts of Europe. It will continue to require airline passengers entering the U.S. to get a test within three days of their departure and show proof of a negative result before boarding.

The travel industry has been pushing for some of these restrictions to end. A group of 26 organizations sent a letter to White House COVID-19 czar Jeffrey Zients urging the federal government "to partner with us to develop, by May 1, 2021, a risk-based, data-driven roadmap to rescind inbound international travel restrictions."

While Some Spring Breakers Swarm Beaches, Many Stay Home, Dreaming Of Summer Travel

While Some Spring Breakers Swarm Beaches, Many Stay Home, Dreaming Of Summer Travel

"To be clear, at this time, we do not support removal or easing of core public health protections, such as the universal mask mandate, inbound international testing requirement, physical distancing or other measures that have made travel safer and reduced transmission of the virus," they wrote. "However, the data and science demonstrate that the right public health measures are now in place to effectively mitigate risk and allow for the safe removal of entry restrictions."

Travel and tourism have taken a considerable hit because of the pandemic with industry groups noting that overseas travel to the U.S. declined by 81% in 2020, causing billions of dollars in losses. Without lifting international travel bans, the U.S. Travel Association estimates that some 1.1 million American jobs will not be restored and billions in spending will be lost by the end of the year.

"Fortunately, enough progress has been made on the health front that a rebound for domestic leisure travel looks possible this year, but that alone won't get the job done," Roger Dow, the association's president and CEO, said in a statement . "A full travel recovery will depend on reopening international markets, and we must also contend with the challenge of reviving business travel."

8 Tips to Fly Internationally for the Price of a Domestic Flight

Traveling internationally often comes with the assumption of hefty price tags. However, with some savvy strategies and flexibility, you can explore global destinations for the cost of hopping over to the next state. Here’s how to fly internationally for the price of a domestic flight.

Vacation Season: 10 Essentials You Should Buy at Dollar Tree for Your Next Trip

I’m a Travel Agent: 7 Costliest Mistakes People Make When Planning Vacations

Sponsored: New Chase checking customers enjoy a $200 bonus when you open a Chase Total Checking® account and set up direct deposit.

1. Be Flexible With Your Dates

Airlines are notorious for adjusting their prices based on demand. If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you’re more likely to snag a bargain. Sites like Google Flights or Skyscanner can show you a calendar view of fare prices over a month. Flying mid-week, especially on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, can also be cheaper. Additionally, flying on the holiday itself, like Thanksgiving Day, often yields lower prices.

2. Use Flight Comparison Tools

Don’t rely on a single website for your flight booking. Use comparison tools like Kayak or Momondo to check multiple airlines and booking sites at once. This will give you a broader view of the available deals. Some of these sites have an alert system, where you can set notifications for price drops on your preferred routes.

3. Consider Alternative Airports

Big city airports are convenient but often pricier. Consider flying out of or into smaller, regional airports. These can offer significant savings and may not be as far from your destination as you think. For example, flying into Gatwick rather than Heathrow when visiting London, or choosing Newark over JFK when heading to New York City.

4. Embrace Layovers

Non-stop flights are great, but they come with a premium. Opting for a flight with one or two layovers can cut costs drastically. Sometimes, you can even turn these layovers into an advantage by creating a mini trip in a city you haven’t visited before. Just make sure the layover is long enough to avoid a mad dash through the airport.

5. Book Early — But Not Too Early

Booking at the right time can be tricky. When it’s too early, airlines haven’t started discounting seats. When it’s too late, you may face last-minute surcharges. As a guideline, start searching for international flights about two to three months before your desired departure date for the best deals.

6. Use Points and Miles Wisely

If you’ve been hoarding points and miles from credit card purchases or previous flights, now might be the time to use them. Sign up for airline newsletters and loyalty programs to get wind of point deals. Sometimes, booking an international flight can cost fewer points than a domestic one, depending on the promotion.

7. Consider Shoulder Season

Every destination has a peak season with sky-high prices. But just before or after this period, the “shoulder season,” prices can drop significantly. The weather is often still favorable, and attractions are less crowded. For instance, Europe in the fall or Latin America in the spring.

8. Track Your Flights

Once you’ve set your sights on a destination, start tracking flight prices with tools like Hopper or AirfareWatchdog. These services use algorithms to predict when prices will rise or fall, and they can notify you when it’s the best time to buy.

The Takeaway

Flying internationally without breaking the bank requires a blend of timing, research, and a touch of luck. By employing these tips, you’ll stand a better chance at booking a flight to a dream destination for the price of visiting your hometown. So, start planning your next trip. The world awaits, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

How we rate travel agents

Our review compares travel agents on customer satisfaction, so you can discover what other Kiwis think about our compared travel agents before you go ahead and book a holiday or trip. Think of it like asking hundreds of your friends and family which travel agents they recommend!

How many Kiwis do we survey for our ratings?

Canstar Blue surveyed 1007 Kiwis who had used a travel agent/agency to book a trip within the last two years and asked for their feedback on the travel agent/agency they used.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics .

What criteria are used to rate travel agencies?

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their travel agent from zero to ten , where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a travel agent brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
  • Communication & Advice: the travel agent provides clear and concise advice throughout the booking process, and is readily available to answer any questions.
  • Level of Knowledge: the travel agent displays a thorough knowledge of the destinations and travel options available to customers.
  • Friendliness of Agent: the customer service provided by the travel agent is attentive and friendly.
  • Price of Trip: the cost of the accommodation and travel purchased delivers value and is appropriate to the standard of holiday chosen.

How do we determine the winner?

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall Satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall Satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall Satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Which travel agency brands do we rate?

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included , so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

Eco Travels

Helloworld travel, orbit travel, house of travel, flight centre.

The winner of last year’s Canstar Blue Travel Agents award, House of Travel earns a 3-Star rating for Overall Satisfaction. House of Travel is one of the country’s most recognisable travel agency brands. It combines a comprehensive online presence with over 60 owner-operated offices and 300 specialist consultants across the country.

House of Travel offers travel services from cheap flights through to package deals and cruises. It also offers a free video service, Face2Face, allowing you to talk to a travel consultant and plan your next holiday via a video call, from the comfort of your home.

While Flight Centre doesn’t manage to earn a top rating from its customers, it scores a sweep of 3-Star ratings across three categories, which signifies a strong level of consumer satisfaction. The brand scores particularly well for Level of Knowledge and Friendliness of Agent, for which it earns 4-Stars.

Flight Centre is an Australian travel agency that has grown into a global brand. In New Zealand it operates over 25 stores nationwide. Through its website and high-street locations, Flight Centre sells a complete range of holiday products, including cheap flights and hotel deals, package holidays, tours and cruises.

Other travel agencies

Not all travel agencies in the market qualify for our ratings (based on minimum survey sample size), but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth considering. Here are some more travel agencies to check out before booking a trip.

Travel associates.

Choosing the Right Travel Agency For You

A holiday is often a trip into the unknown. Indeed, over two-thirds of travellers in our survey (67%) say they always prefer to explore a new holiday destination.

But even if you know where you’re going, there should be no unknowns about your flight and accommodation details.

That’s why great communication and advice from a travel expert is the most important aspect of booking any trip, whether to a domestic destination or abroad.

In this year’s award ratings, over a third of travellers (35%) cite Communication & Advice as the biggest factor influencing their satisfaction with the travel agency they used.

And the importance of experience and knowledge extends even further. For Level of Knowledge (28%) rates well above the price paid for the trip, which was the most important factor for just 15% of respondents.

Overall, here’s how the Kiwi travellers in our research rate the different factors affecting their choice of travel agents:

  • Communication & Advice: 35%
  • Level of Knowledge: 28%
  • Friendliness of Agent: 21%
  • Price of Trip: 15%

About this research

Canstar Blue surveyed 5108 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers who used a travel agent/agency to book a trip within the last two years, in this case, 1007 New Zealanders. Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criterion.

  • Got a few hours to spare at Sheremetyevo International Airport? Why not stop off at the Aero-beauty hair salon for a cut, trim, or maybe even a dye? Another option is to spend some time at the History Museum of Sheremetyevo, which has several unique exhibitions on the history of the airport.

Travel Insurance

Why do i need travel insurance.

Part of the travel experience is heading into the unknown. Being well prepared is the best way to start. Travel insurance covers you from the moment you purchase the Policy until you come home safely. You’re even covered for cancellation before your trip takes off.

Along the way you’ll be covered for unexpected events beyond your control, including lost bags and unlimited medical cover. You’ll find a summary of our policies in our Policy brochure. For full details of cover and exclusions, see your House of Travel consultant.

We’re hugely passionate about travel and have teamed up with Allianz Partners, a world leader in assistance and travel insurance.

Allianz Partners has direct support worldwide, from people who care about people. With 33 centres operating in 28 countries.

Together, we offer an unparalleled standard of emergency medical assistance to policy holders.

Make an online claim

As part of your claim you may be required to: 1. Provide supporting documentation such as original invoices, receipts, and other vouchers relating to your expenses or loss. 2. Produce your policy details 3. Provide all the information required to enable the claim to be considered.

What documentation is required to make a claim?

You must give any information reasonably asked for to support your claim at your expense, such as, but not limited to, police reports, valuations, medical reports, receipts or proof of ownership. If required, you may be asked to provide translations into English of such documents to enable Allianz to carry out our assessment of your claim. • For loss or theft of your baggage or personal effects, you should notify the local police or local government authority with 24 hours and you must obtain a copy of the incident report. • For damage or misplacement of your baggage or personal effects caused by the airline or any other operator or accommodation provider, report the damage or misplacement to an appropriate official and obtain a written report, including any offer of settlement that they make. • For medical or dental claims please contact Allianz Partners as soon as practicable and ensure that you retain all reports, receipts, doctor’s certificates and other information.

Important claims information

All claims are paid in New Zealand dollars. Allianz will pay you unless you advise to pay someone else. The rate of currency exchange that will apply is the rate at the time you incurred the expense. Depreciation will be applied to claims for Luggage and Personal Effects at such rates as reasonably determined by Allianz Partners. If you can make a claim against someone in relation to a loss or expense covered under this policy and you do not get paid the full amount of your claim, Allianz will make up the difference. You must claim from them first.

Emergency assistance

If you require emergency assistance while you are travelling you should contact the Allianz Global Emergency Assistance Team. When you call please have your name, policy number, details describing your emergency and a contact phone number, including area code to provide ready for the operator. Within New Zealand: 0800 778 103 Reverse charge call through telephone operator: +649 486 6868 It is important that travellers tell Allianz immediately when they become aware of any circumstances that may give rise to a claim. If you require assistance with a claim while overseas, you need to call and they will give advice on what to do. If you are asked to submit a claim, you must do this within 30 days of your return to New Zealand. To reduce delays in processing a claim, travellers should ensure documentation is submitted at the time of claim.

Travel Insurance FAQs

No , travel insurance is the same price if you buy it straight away, or on the day of departure. Delaying the purchase simply leaves you uninsured for the travel funds you have just invested. More than a third of all claim costs paid by Allianz Partners are for customers that were unable to travel due to unexpected events, so we strongly recommend to everyone to take out travel insurance on the day you pay your deposit.

No , travel insurance policies can vary greatly, so it is very important that travellers check through and make sure that the policy suits your needs.

Yes, travel insurance is needed for all international travel. Some people assume that they don’t need travel insurance because New Zealand has a reciprocal health agreement with Australia. However, not all health costs are covered, including ambulance call outs, doctor visits or private hospitalisation.

As there are no reciprocal health agreements in place with the South Pacific nations, any healthcare costs need to be paid for. Even relatively small injuries or illness can run into thousands of dollars.

Travel insurance policies can differ greatly, including the level of cover, automatically included benefits, exclusions and terms and conditions.

It is important to check that the policy meets your requirements for cancellation benefits, coverage of any pre-existing medical conditions and coverage of higher value personal effects. We recommend that travellers check through the policy to make sure that it meets your needs.

Buying a travel insurance policy at your local store will provide you with back up and support from your House of Travel consultant. With customer permission, our booking system also allows us to track our customers around the world. This has proved to be incredibly useful during crisis around the world.

With House of Travel Travel Insurance, Allianz Partners’ doctors, registered nurses, logistic professionals and support personnel will be there for you. If you need emergency help, call Allianz Partners toll-free 24/7. The assistance team based in Brisbane will assign you a case manager who will assist.

For non-emergency help or to lodge a claim you can contact Allianz Partners claims team who are based in Auckland. > Make an online claim

  • 8. How do I declare my pre-existing medical conditions? Your House of Travel consultant will give you a toll-free telephone number to call the Allianz Partners' medical assessment team, Monday-Friday, 9-5pm. Please have your travel insurance policy or quote number ready to give to the medical assessor. You will be asked a series of questions about your medical conditions. If you are unsure of your conditions, please discuss with your treating doctor first.

Yes, House of Travel strongly recommends you register your travel plans at www.safetravel.govt.nz before you travel. Safe Travel is the official registration website for New Zealanders travelling or living overseas. Ask your House of Travel consultant for our travel insurance Policy Wording.

Simple Flying

Examined: the us carriers operating domestic widebody flights in 2024.

These airlines operate a unique number of domestic services with widebody jets.

  • Major US carriers operate widebody jets on select domestic routes, with Honolulu being a key destination for such flights.
  • The limited range of twinjets makes it essential for widebodies to meet the demand for flights to Hawaii from mainland hubs.
  • Carriers prioritize widebody services on transcontinental flights due to higher demand for premium products like lie-flat business class seats.

For the most part, widebody aircraft are utilized on long-haul flights, almost all of which are international and many of which traverse oceans and entire continents. Under extremely limited circumstances, the use of widebody aircraft on short-haul routes is both commercially and economically viable, and the United States domestic market is one of these few places.

All major American carriers that operate widebody jets fly them domestically on some routes, with one particular destination consistently proving a hotspot for long-haul domestic widebody flights. Some markets just need widebody service, whether it is due to operational restrictions, a need to provide higher levels of passenger comfort (as often found on widebodies), or possibly just to add higher capacity.

Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines are all operators of domestic widebody services within the United States, and they have done so for an extended period of time with no suspension of such services in sight. In this article, we will take a deeper look at the nature of domestic widebody services and which ones are currently operating in the United States.

Honolulu's widebody popularity

Among all destinations that see widebody traffic from domestic flights is Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), a fact that has been true for a long time. Prior to the introduction of Extended-Range Twin-Engine Operational Performance Standards (ETOPS) , twin-engine aircraft could not fly the large over-water stretch to Hawaii.

Get all the latest aviation news right here on Simple Flying!

As a result, the airport primarily saw trijet and quad-engine aircraft, which were almost always large, widebody aircraft. Many engines require higher capacity to allow carriers to turn a profit. Even though ETOPS restrictions now allow for twinjet services to the facility, many carriers still choose to operate higher-capacity services to Honolulu.

Hawaii is an incredibly popular vacation destination, especially for American tourists seeking a tropical getaway without leaving the comfort of the United States. However, with the islands' remote location, most twinjets do not have the appropriate range to make it there from most East Coast and central US cities.

United's Domestic Widebody Flights – and How To Find Them

Therefore, with high demand and not enough range from narrowbodies, the business case for flying widebodies to Hawaii is extremely strong. One carrier, Hawaiian Airlines, which has recently become the target of an acquisition from Alaska Airlines , has made an entire business model out of flying long-haul widebody services to Hawaii, currently with Airbus A330 jets and eventually Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Currently, the four airlines operating domestic widebody flights conduct hundreds of weekly journeys between the contiguous United States and Hawaii, with dozens of different routes. The table below provides a full list of the destinations where widebody service is available to and from Honolulu, according to data from Cirium , an aviation analytics company.

It is also worth mentioning that Hawaiian Airlines flies an additional domestic widebody service that is not listed above. It originates from Kahului Airport (OGG) and connects the largest airport on the island of Maui with Los Angeles.

American Airlines operates a similar service to Kahului Airport, originating in Dallas/Fort Worth. Additionally, not all flights to Hawaii are operated by widebodies, such as Southwest's flights from the California Bay Area to the islands , which have been running for over five years now.

Hub-to-hub connections

Domestic carriers in the United States operate an additional kind of widebody flight, one that follows far more traditional route models. To provide efficient connections across large networks, American legacy carriers need to offer high-capacity services between their major hubs.

US Domestic Widebody Flights Remain Well Above Pre-Pandemic Level

As a result, all three legacy carriers operate domestic widebody flights between their largest hubs, with special emphasis on lucrative transcontinental connections. A full list of these services can be seen in the table below:

As one can see from the routes above, carriers prioritize widebody service on transcontinental flights, likely due to the strong demand for premium products on these routes. As flights from the West Coast to the Eastern seaboard often operate overnight, there is a strong demand for direct aisle access lie-flat business class seats , as there are in the business class cabins of all three of these airlines.

Across the board, widebody flights maintain a unique purpose in the American domestic aviation market, and customers unaware of this can expect a greater amount of comfort on any of the routes listed above. With more demand than ever for destinations like Hawaii and hub airports becoming increasingly crowded, it is not unlikely that we will see more domestic widebody routes in the near future .

Airport Guides

Sheremetyevo International Airport

We’re probably not telling you anything you don’t already know when we tell you that “going to the airport” isn’t exactly on everyone’s bucket list. But just like every destination is different, so is every airport. And just as navigating a new city is challenging in and of itself, so is navigating a new airport. How do I get from one terminal to the next? What are the best airport restaurants? Is there anything to do if I have a long layover?

If you’re anything like us, then these are probably the types of questions you have that perhaps you don’t get push notifications for. But never fear, because we have answers to your airport questions with our series of guides to the world’s top airports. Today we bring you the TripIt airport guide to Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) .

Sheremetyevo International Airport is one of three major airports serving Moscow. It's also Russia’s busiest airport, seeing more than 40 million passengers last year. Originally built as a military airfield for the Soviet Air Force, SVO has been a commercial airport since 1959. It has two main terminal areas, the north and south, which are linked by complimentary bus service. SVO is a primary base for Aeroflot and served by many of the major international airlines.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is located approximately 18 miles (30 km) from Central Moscow. By car or taxi, the airport is at least a 30-minute drive from Central Moscow. Public transportation services the airport from multiple public transit stations, but the quickest way to and from Central Moscow is on the Aeroexpress . Located inside the airport, the Aeroexpress takes 35 minutes and transfers passengers to Belorussky Railway Terminal. Additionally, several  car sharing services are available, and car rental operators are located on the first floor of Terminal D.

Travelers flying through SVO will find a number of familiar fast-service restaurants, including Burger King, Subway, Starbucks, McDonald's, and KFC. Other restaurants for on-the-go items include Teremok (Terminal D), Ramen Club (Terminal F), Surf’n’Fries (Terminal F), and Kroshka Kartoshka (terminals B, D, F), which is one of Russia’s largest chains.

Restaurants of the sit-down variety include T.G.I Friday's (terminals D and F), Spaten (Terminal E) for beer and steak, Pyatyy Okean (Terminal F), Phố Phở (Terminal B),  Mama Russia (terminals B and D), Magadan (terminals B and D), Lunch Point (Terminal F), La Pasteria (Terminal D), and Factory (Terminal D). SVO has many more restaurants, as well as a number of cafes and coffee shops, which you can view on the airport’s website . Finally, look out for the caviar vending machine.

Many of the restaurants listed above—such as Spaten, specializing in beer—double as great spots to enjoy a drink at Sheremetyevo International Airport. Elsewhere, enjoy a selection of Russian beer paired with sausage at Sibirskaya Korona (Terminal D) and  Krušovice (Terminal B), or Irish fare and beer at Guinness Pub&Kitchen (Terminal E) and  The Irish Bar (terminals B and F). Other bars include American Bar and Grill (Terminal B), Forshtadt Altai (Terminal D), O'Learys (Aeroexpress Terminal), and Schofferhofer (Terminal D).

Like most international airports, Sheremetyevo International Airport has a plethora of shops, including names you’re probably familiar with, like Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, COACH, Swarovski, and Bvlgari. Unique to SVO, however, is its  History Museum of Sheremetyevo , which is located on the fifth floor of Terminal F. The museum features exhibits, aviation paraphernalia and other items that tell the history of the airport. Also unique to SVO is its own spa, located on the second floor of the Moscow Business Lounge (Terminal D), and featuring a number of treatments for men and women. Other airport amenities include shower rooms and a salon in the Arrivals hall on the first floor of Terminal E. If you want to get some sleep, GettSleep is located in Terminal D, featuring individual sleep capsules with flexible hourly rates, free Wi-Fi, shower cabins, a co-working area and more.

Airport Lounges

Sheremetyevo International Airport has no shortage of business lounges, including the Gallery Lounge (occupying two floors in Terminal D), the Matryoshka Lounge (Terminal D), Moscow Lounge (Terminal D), Space Lounge (Terminal E), Classic Lounge (Terminal F), and Rublev Lounge (Terminal B)—which holds the record for longest buffet of any business lounge in the world. Most of these are available free for priority passengers, certain flight statuses and some cardholders. They're available to other guests for a fee. SVO's more prestigious lounges include the Mastercard Lounge in Terminal E and VIP lounges in terminals B, D, E and F.

Use TripIt’s  interactive airport maps  in the app to discover shop, restaurant, and bar locations. You’ll also have everything you need to navigate your way with estimated walk times and step-by-step directions.

Where Americans Are Traveling in 2024: By the Numbers

Sam Kemmis

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Americans are traveling abroad in droves.

The number of U.S. citizens flying to international destinations reached nearly 6.5 million passengers in March, according to the International Trade Administration. That’s the highest March total in over five years and shows that the post-pandemic “revenge travel” trend is the new normal.

It wasn’t just March, which usually sees a spike in international departures for spring break. In every month of 2024 so far, more Americans left the country than last year and 2019. These trends point to a blockbuster summer for overseas travel.

Nearly half of Americans (45%) plan to travel by air and/or stay in a hotel this summer and expect to spend $3,594 on average, on these expenses, according to a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, conducted online by The Harris Poll and commissioned by NerdWallet.

That's despite rising travel prices that have caused some hesitancy among would-be travelers. About 22% of those choosing not to travel this summer cite inflation making travel too expensive as a reason for staying home, according to the poll.

So where are traveling Americans going? And what does it mean for those looking to avoid crowds of tourists and higher travel prices?

New travel patterns

Nearly every region in the world saw an increase in U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2023, according to International Trade Administration data. Only the Middle East saw a decline of 9%. Yet not every region saw the same year-over-year bump. U.S. visitors to Asia saw a 33% jump, while Oceania and Central America each saw a 30% increase.

Comparing 2024 with 2023 only tells part of the story, however. The new patterns really emerge when comparing international travel trends to 2019. For example, Central America received 50% more U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2019. Nearly 1.5 million Americans visited Mexico, up 39% compared with before the pandemic. That’s almost as many visitors as the entire continent of Europe, which has seen a more modest 10% increase since 2019.

Only Canada and Oceania saw fewer visitors in March 2024 than in 2019, suggesting that interest in these locations has not rebounded. Indeed, the trends indicate a kind of tourism inertia from COVID-19 pandemic-era lockdowns: Those destinations that were more open to U.S. visitors during the pandemic, such as Mexico, have remained popular, while those that were closed, such as Australia, have fallen off travelers’ radars.

Price pressures

How these trends play out throughout the rest of the year will depend on a host of factors. Yet, none will likely prove more important than affordability. After months of steadiness, the cost of travel, including airfare, hotels and rental cars, has begun to sneak up again.

About 45% of U.S. travelers say cost is their main consideration when planning their summer vacation, according to a survey of 2,000 Americans by the travel booking platform Skyscanner.

That’s likely to weigh further on U.S. travelers’ appetite for visiting expensive destinations such as Europe, while encouraging travel to budget-friendly countries. It could also depress overall international travel as well, yet so far, Americans seem to be traveling more.

For those looking to avoid crowds while maintaining a budget, Skyscanner travel trends expert Laura Lindsay offered a recommendation many of us might need help finding on a map.

“Albania has been on the radar of travelers looking for something different,” Lindsay said. "Most people have yet to discover it, but flights and tourism infrastructure are in place, and there are fewer crowds in comparison to trending European destinations like Italy, Greece, or Portugal.”

On the flip side, American travelers looking to avoid crowds of compatriots would do well to avoid Japan, which has seen a staggering 50% increase in U.S. tourists between March 2019 and 2024.

Bucket list travel on a budget: Expert tips for airfare, loyalty programs, credit card perks and more

VIDEO: Tips for affordable travel

Many travelers have their sights set on summer getaways , but with everything from baggage fees to fuel costs impacting the price of a ticket, "Good Morning America" is asking travel experts to share tips for booking bucket list destinations on a budget and finding savings along the way.

Travel expert Nicky Kelvin, senior director of content for The Points Guy, offered his tips for affordable travel techniques.

house of travel domestic flights

Where to find the best flight deals

house of travel domestic flights

Kelvin encourages travelers to utilize Google Flights and other free price-tracking tools to compare fare prices and snag the best deal.

He also suggests using both the calendar and map features within Google Flights to see which airports, dates and destinations how the lowest fare.

From the Google Flights homepage on a computer, click "explore destinations" and select a departure city without adding a destination. Then zoom out on the map to see the best prices for destinations all over the world.

Get the most out of free travel loyalty programs

Travelers should be earning points for anything and everything that they are buying or booking from airline and hotels to car rentals, Kelvin said.

In addition to the points that can can help travelers earn free flights and hotel stays, Kelvin said to look for extra perks just for joining.

Hyatt rewards, for example, offers all guests free breakfast.

For Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Car Rental, he said you can add your spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver for free.

Loyalty programs are great for airlines too. JetBlue, for example, allows enrolled customers -- even if they don't have enough points for a flight -- to use points for discounts. Plus, with any airline, as you accumulate points to earn status, you can get free seating upgrades.

Travel credit cards with cash back perks

Along with earning points, travel credit cards give you protection for your trip like insurance to help with lost or damaged baggage and trip cancellation protection

Chase debuts new airport lounge: Gourmet menus, sleek interiors, free facials redefine hospitality for airport travel

As for credit cards, The Points Guy team suggests the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card as an all-around pick -- you get 75,000 miles after meeting your minimum spend in the first three months. Which Kelvin said is a value of over $1,300.

If you're looking to earn the most miles, he said look to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

"You'll earn the most points on all your purchases with this one," he said.

Finally, if you want a credit card with no fee, Kelvin suggested the Bilt Mastercard, which he said is particularly great for renters because you can earn points on what's likely someone's biggest expense.

Save money on international phone plans for summer trips

If someone's trip is taking them out of the country, using a cell phone internationally can cost $10 to 15 per day. For a family of four, that's more than $400 for a week.

If your phones support eSIM, Kelvin suggested purchasing a data plan for your destination through an app such as Airalo, Truphone or GigSky.

For example, one of Airalo's global SIM plans costs $9 for one week, which could save a family close to $350 dollars, depending on their existing international coverage.
