The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says solar activity is intensifying and will peak (at a higher level than previously thought) in 2024. This means travelers will have more opportunities to see the northern lights around the world .

If you're considering a trip to Alaska to witness this atmospheric phenomenon, read on to discover the best months to visit as well as a variety of viewing options.

According to the Alaska Travel Industry Association, the best time to see the northern lights is typically from Aug. 21 to April 21 , also known as the Aurora Season. While the aurora can appear at any time of night, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. are the prime viewing hours.

The winter solstice – which is the shortest day of the year, typically falling between Dec. 20 and 23 – is a particularly good time to be in Alaska for the northern lights. This day affords less daylight and more time to spot the aurora. In parts of Alaska, the amount of daylight during the winter solstice can range from around six hours in Anchorage to less than four further north in Fairbanks. Up in remote Utqiagvik (formerly called Barrow), about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, there are roughly 67 days of darkness from Nov. 18 to Jan. 23, resulting in even more opportunities to spot the northern lights.

Of course, 2024 is expected to be a little different. Scientists say solar activity will reach its peak from January to October, expanding the typical time frame for spotting the aurora. Ahead of and during your visit, experts recommend utilizing these forecasting resources:

• Aurora Tracker: Whether you're a beginner or an experienced aurora chaser, you'll appreciate Explore Fairbanks' real-time Aurora Tracker . This online reference shows up-to-the-minute information on the temperature, weather and likelihood of catching the northern lights in Fairbanks. Much of the data comes from one of the world's foremost aurora research centers, the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska–Fairbanks . To further assist in your search, you can also download the My Aurora Forecast & Alerts app on your smartphone.
• Aurora Forecast: For other parts of the state, the Geophysical Institute website's Aurora Forecast has daily forecasts of geomagnetic activity up to three days in advance and taken at three-hour intervals. There's also a summation on the webpage of whether the aurora will be active – or not – and where you'll find the best visibility in Alaska.

Below are the top destinations to consider when deciding where to see the northern lights in Alaska.

Fairbanks, known as the Golden Heart of Alaska, sits at 65 degrees north latitude, making it an excellent choice for aurora hunters, especially first-timers. It's easily accessible and offers plenty of accommodations , restaurants and other unique attractions . You can also be outside of Fairbanks within minutes to find excellent northern lights viewing locales.

Your chances of seeing the aurora display are excellent as the city sits where the activity of the polar lights is concentrated – under the ring-shaped zone known as the auroral oval. Local experts say that on clear evenings when the sky is very dark, you should be able to witness the skies light up on an average of four out of five nights in Fairbanks.

Where to stay:

• Aurora Villa : Located on the outskirts of Fairbanks, Aurora Villa offers luxurious guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows for viewing the northern lights in a cozy private space. The modern wooden cabin sits on 10 acres surrounded by forested hills, yet it's close enough to the city (less than 15 miles northeast) to explore all that Fairbanks has to offer.
• Pike's Waterfront Lodge : Located along the Chena River in Fairbanks, just minutes from Fairbanks International Airport, this property offers 180 rooms and 28 cabins for aurora-hunting adventurers. As a guest of the lodge, you can request that the front desk alert you when the northern lights appear – no matter the time of day or night. Pike's Waterfront Lodge also offers amenities to keep guests warm while viewing the light show outdoors.

Talkeetna sits about 115 miles north of Anchorage in south-central Alaska, at the base of Denali, the tallest mountain peak in North America. With its old clapboard buildings, log cabins and roadhouse dating back to 1917, this historic town offers a lot of outdoor fun beyond chasing the aurora. Main Street is filled with galleries, shops, restaurants and a brewery. The quirky village, once a former mining town, was the inspiration for the imaginary borough of Cicely in the TV show "Northern Exposure."

If you visit in December, check out the festivities at the monthlong Winterfest. This event features a parade of lights, a tree lighting ceremony and the Taste of Talkeetna food festival, plus entertaining events like the Bachelor Auction and the Wilderness Woman Competition.

When it's time to look up in the sky for the lights, local aurora hunters recommend heading out of town to Christiansen Lake or past the airport on Beaver Road. If you prefer to stay close by, look north into the sky toward Denali from Talkeetna Riverfront Park.

• Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge : Book a Mountain View room for views of Denali and the Alaskan Range. The cozy lodge offers multiple dining venues, including the award-winning Foraker Restaurant.
• Talkeetna Lakeside Cabins : These cabins provide peace and quiet on a private lake just 12 miles from Talkeetna.

Denali National Park

Denali National Park is another spectacular place to view the northern lights in Alaska – not to mention one of the top tourist attractions in the U.S. The National Park Service says almost everywhere within the park is free from city light pollution, so if the conditions are right (meaning that's it's clear and dark enough), you should be able to see the aurora borealis, especially when looking toward the northern horizon.

However, when wintertime rolls around – from September or October through April – it's more difficult to access parts of the park, even though it's open year-round. Keep in mind, too, that the lodges closest to the park are typically closed from mid-September to mid-May.

Where to stay: Located less than 15 miles from the Denali National Park entrance, the Aurora Denali Lodge offers year-round accommodations equipped with queen-sized beds, smart TVs and private bathrooms. Rates at the lodge include a continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, free parking and complimentary hot drinks. What's more, the property says visitors can expect plenty of wildlife sightings, such as bears, moose, lynxes, owls and snowshoe hares, just outside your door.

Coldfoot Camp

Coldfoot Camp is situated above the Arctic Circle in the Brooks Mountain Range, near the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The remote wilderness destination is ideal for aurora viewing since it sits directly under the auroral oval. It's also the perfect locale for backcountry snowshoeing, wildlife viewing and dog mushing.

Where to stay: The Inn at Coldfoot Camp offers rustic accommodations located in trailers that once housed Alaskan pipeline workers. The rooms include two twin beds and a private bathroom and shower. Guests can dine at the on-site Trucker's Cafe, which offers breakfast and dinner buffets in the summer months and all-day a la carte dining in the winter. When you're ready for a cold one at the end of the day, check out the Frozen Foot Saloon and order an Alaska-brewed beer.

If you prefer camping and have your own gear , you can camp free of charge on the property during the summer months. Coldfoot Camp also hosts a selection of year-round Arctic adventures and excursions, including a trip to the nearby village of Wiseman for aurora viewing.

This remote wilderness retreat has just 13 full-time residents. Wiseman is located in Alaska's Brooks Range, about 15 miles north of Coldfoot Camp, 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 270 miles from Fairbanks. The community sits directly under the auroral oval, making it one of the best places in Alaska to view the northern lights. You can expect to see the spectacle in the sky in Wiseman about 250 nights a year, especially between late August and mid-April.

• Arctic Hive : Arctic Hive has the distinction of being the northernmost yoga studio in the U.S. A common fiberglass lodge allows guests to gather for cooking and meals, and meditation, educational gatherings and other activities are hosted in a geodesic dome. Arctic Hive also offers retreats that include northern lights viewing opportunities in February and March.
• Arctic Getaway : This bed-and-breakfast sits between the middle fork of the Koyukuk River and Wiseman Creek, offering three cabins. While here, you can learn what it's like to homestead in Alaska above the Arctic Circle and enjoy outdoor activities like dog sled rides across the vast wilderness, cross-country skiing , pack rafting and flightseeing by bush plane.
• Boreal Lodging : Reachable by vehicle, Boreal Lodging has several rental options, ranging from lodge rooms to larger cabins with living areas and kitchens.

Located in western Alaska overlooking the Norton Sound of the Bering Sea, Nome is the ending point for the more than 1,000-mile, 51-year-old Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race in March. Once the most populated city in Alaska, Nome had almost 20,000 residents and an average of 1,000 new people arriving daily during the height of the gold rush in 1899. Nome is a little quieter now, with a population of less than 4,000 residents.

Where to stay: Some of the best spots for viewing the aurora are at the end of town, where the 52-room Aurora Inn & Suites is located. The hotel conveniently offers car rentals on-site.

The property features 20 individual igloos, resembling those you'd find at Arctic research stations and on polar expeditions, as well as five glass cubes. All accommodations allow guests to gaze up at the aurora and the starry night sky while snuggled up in bed. You'll also enjoy many amenities you'd find in a hotel, including full bathrooms with toiletries and a selection of coffee, hot cocoa and tea.

If you're interested in excursions for aurora viewing, look for a line that offers cruisetours, such as Holland America. These tours offer the best of both worlds, giving you time on land and at sea to view the dancing night sky. Holland America's cruisetours range from overnight stays just 2 miles from Denali National Park at the McKinley Chalet Resort to a domed luxury train ride through Alaska's backcountry on the McKinley Explorer. On a Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali, look for Alaska's "Big Five": grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and wolves. Just keep in mind that none of the above cruise lines can guarantee you'll see the northern lights during your journey.

If you want to experience the aurora borealis by joining a tour group, you'll find a variety of options led by expert guides and granting you easier access to many of the state's remote destinations, often with other activities included. (Just be aware that, on any tour or excursion, there's no way to guarantee that the aurora will be visible.) These are some of the best northern lights tours in Alaska:

Arctic Dog Adventure Co.: Aurora Overnight Tour

Dog-sledding is one of the top winter activities in Alaska, and you can choose to do it by day or night. If you want to experience an Alaska dog-sledding adventure while chasing the aurora, book a once-in-a-lifetime experience with Arctic Dog's Aurora Overnight Tour. Highlights of this two-day, one-night excursion – which starts in Fairbanks – are dog mushing your own sled team and glamping in a heated tent under an aurora-filled sky. Other features of the tour include cold weather gear, a photography lesson and Alaska-inspired meals.

Alaska Wildlife Guide: Northern Lights & Murphy Dome Tour

Located around 20 miles northwest of the city, Murphy Dome is regarded as one of the best places to watch the northern lights in Fairbanks at nearly 3,000 feet above sea level. This location, once home to Murphy Dome Air Force Station with as many as 250 personnel stationed at the base, now houses a long-range radar station that detects military air threats from overseas.

The tour includes a drive along the more than 800-mile Trans-Alaskan Pipeline and a half-mile walk along the loop at Finger Mountain with views overlooking the Kanuti Flats (depending on the season). Your guide will also stop along the riverbank after crossing the Yukon River Bridge.

During the tour, you'll learn about the history of the pipeline and hear narratives around the other included stops. A snack and warm beverage are included; then, if conditions are just right, you'll have the chance to see the brilliant light show dance across the dark, clear skies before you arrive back in Fairbanks at dawn.

Alaska Journey Tours: Northern Lights (Aurora) Chasing Tour

Get picked up at your Fairbanks hotel (or meet at the Hyatt Place Fairbanks) for this three-hour northern lights tour in a heated SUV. Guides take photos of tourgoers as well as their own photos of the night sky, which are later shared with the group. Alaska Photo Treks offers one of the best ways to see the northern lights in Anchorage – and you'll even learn how best to photograph the aurora, which can be a challenge to capture digitally or on film. This experience, the Anchorage Aurora Quest, is available nightly (when conditions are right), typically from mid-August to mid-April. The approximately six-hour guided tour with a professional photographer explains the science behind the northern lights and provides photo tips for budding aurora photographers in a small-group format. Tourgoers are picked up from their hotel by the guide at about 10 p.m. and return around 4 a.m., though that time can vary based on the aurora forecast.

On the Alaska Photo Treks website, you'll find a list of recommended camera equipment to bring. If you're using a smartphone, the tour group suggests downloading an aurora app and bringing a tripod. The company also advises that you'll be outdoors for about two hours, so you need to dress appropriately for the weather. For the best aurora viewing, the guides usually travel between one to three locations within a 70-mile radius of Anchorage. If you're in town for an extended stay, Alaska Photo Treks also offers a four-day pass for even more nocturnal viewing of the auroral activity.

Alaska Tours: Chena Hot Springs and Northern Lights

While exploring the world and traveling to new places is a lot of fun, there are some places you're prohibited from ever visiting.

Whether they contain government secrets, house valuable items, or simply are too dangerous to outsiders, these places only allow a limited number of people to enter the premises. Click through this list to see more!

Bank Of England Vaults, London, England

The Bank of England is one of the most powerful institutions in the United Kingdom; it sets interest rates and issues banknotes in the British currency. It takes three-foot-long keys to open the vaults, which hold 5,134 tonnes of gold worth £200 billion.

Visiting is strictly off-limits unless you're a member of the security team, an employee, or the queen.

Surtsey, Iceland

Just off the coast of Iceland lies a volcanic island called Surtsey. People are prohibited from visiting the island due to its scientific significance, since it has evolved from a volcanic landscape which was absolutely barren of life into a place where plants and animals are now thriving.

There are approximately 12 species of birds, gray seals, and some types of plants living on this volcanic island.

Chapel Of The Ark Of The Covenant, Axum, Ethiopia

According to the Book of Exodus, the Ark of the Covenant, also called the Ark of the Testimony, is a gold-covered wooden chest that contains the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. It is rumored that this Ethiopian chapel is the final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant.

Nobody is allowed to see the Ark—not even the Ethiopian president. A single monk watches over the ark and never leaves the chapel grounds.

Area 51, Nevada, USA

One of the most infamous restricted locations, Area 51 supposedly contains secret military aircraft and UFOs. The area is an outpost of the Edwards Air Force Base; however, the main purpose of the area is not known.

The government is extremely secretive about the area, which has led to a slew of theories about what the area is really used for—many believe it contains aliens. Area 51 is monitored by cameras and underground motion sensors 24/7. Photography is banned, and if you are caught moseying around the area, you can end up facing imprisonment.

Fort Knox Bullion Depository, Kentucky, USA

Also known as the United States Bullion Depository, it's an important part of US history. During WWII, the depository safeguarded the U.S. Declaration of Independence as well as the U.S. Constitution, the Magna Carta, and other important historical documents.

There are many theories about what lies inside (such as alien spaceships). What's known for sure is that it protects America's gold: 2.4% of all the gold ever refined in history.

Room 39, North Korea

Room 39 (officially Central Committee Bureau 39 of the Workers' Party of Korea) is a secretive North Korean party organization that's allegedly involved in illegal activities like counterfeiting $100 bills, producing controlled substances, and international insurance fraud.

Many people suggest that operations of Room 39 help to fund North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Room 39 is thought to be situated inside a ruling Workers' Party building in Pyongyang, not far from one of the North Korean leader's residences.

White Gentlemen's Club, London, England

Founded in 1693, White Gentleman's Club is the oldest gentleman's club in London and is widely regarded as the most exclusive club in the city. The only woman who has been inside, other than employees, was Queen Elizabeth II, who had a brief visit in 1991.

You need to be invited to join, and the membership price is $85,000 a year. Once inside, the prices aren't cheap either.

Google Data Centers, Multiple Locations Worldwide

If you try to set foot near a data center, you will face fences, checkpoints, badges, and biometric iris scans, just to name a few. There are other security measures in place to keep out unwanted guests, however, and Google refuses to disclose what they are. Tours of the centers are off-limits, and less than 1 percent of Google's employees are allowed to enter.

All existing data centers use about 2% of the world's electricity, so Google so uses wind turbines to power some of the facilities.

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Pripyat, Ukraine

An explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on April 26th, 1986, caused fire and smoke to emit radioactive particles into the sky which then spread over western USSR territory and the rest of Europe. The city of Chernobyl was evacuated shortly after the disaster.

Due to residual radiation and the health risks it poses, travel to the Exclusion Zone is highly restricted. However, wildlife has flourished due to the lack of human occupation.

Snake Island, Brazil

Snake Island (Ilha da Quimada Grande) is located off the coast of Brazil. Its rocky and rainforest terrains are home to many critically endangered snakes—particularly, golden lanceheads.

Because of the high number of snakes on the island, the Brazilian Navy decided to restrict public entry to the island, the intention being both to protect visitors from the venomous species and to protect the snakes from human presence.

Svalbard Seed Bank, Norway

This seed bank is located on Spitsbergen, an island in the middle of the Arctic. The vault stores multitudes of seeds on the off chance that a global catastrophe wipes out most of the world's crops. Currently, it has about 864,000 distinct seeds and the space to hold up to 4.5 million.

It has no permanent staff and there is not a single person who has all of the codes you need to get inside of the structure.

Moscow Metro-2, Russia

Metro-2 is the informal name for a secret underground metro system that runs parallel to the public Moscow Metro. The system was built, or at least started, during the time of Joseph Stalin's rule and was given the code name "D-6" by the KGB.

Whether it really exists is still a mystery. There have been interviews over the years involving people who claim to have been involved in the metro's construction. Recently, demolition of the supposed spot of the Metro-2 uncovered a tunnel that could be part of a larger system.

Jiangsu National Security Education System, Nanjing, China

Only Chinese citizens have the right to enter this museum; foreigners aren't allowed in since the museum stores sensitive spy information. Several of its halls display the history of Chinese security since 1927—classified documents, guns disguised as everyday objects, weapons, and uniforms.

People who appear to be Westerners are turned away from the museum; however, those who have Chinese features can usually enter without being probed.

Royal Air Force Menwith Hill, North Yorkshire, England

The station contains an extensive satellite ground station and is a communications intercept and missile warning site. It's considered the largest electronic monitoring station on Earth; it houses many satellites owned and operated by the US National Reconnaissance Office.

Activists have spoken out against the activities taking place at the station, stating that they are undemocratic and invasive because of programs like the ECHELON Interception System—a system that leaks into private and commercial communications.

Pine Gap, Australia

The facility contains a large computer complex with 14 radomes protecting antennas, and it employs over 800 people including CIA officers.

The location in Central Australia allows the United States to monitor spy satellites as they pass over the third of the globe which includes China, the Asian parts of Russia, and the Middle East. Due to the area's very remote location, spy ships passing in international waters are unable to intercept the signal.

Lascaux Caves, France

The Lascaux Caves located in Montignac, France, is one of the most restricted places on Earth. Featuring pre-historic cave art more than 17,300 years old, the cave has been closed off to the public since 1963.

That being said, archeologists are allowed to venture into the caves on a case-to-case basis.

Surtsey Island

Located off the coast of Iceland, Surtsey Island is one of the most restricted places in the world. Closed off to the public, only scientists and researchers are allowed to step foot on the land had steadily been eroding.

Scientists believe the island will completely disappear into the ocean if too many people are allowed on it.

Ise Grand Shrine In Japan

Located in n Ise, Mie Prefecture of Japan, the Ise Grand Shrine is one of the most expensive shrines in the country, with 80,000 shrines on the property.

The shrine's Shinto traditions date back to the 8th century and everything is rebuilt every 20 years. No one but Japanese royalty is allowed on its grounds.

North Brother Island

Located in New York, North Brother Island was once a quarantine location and the house of the infamous Typhoid Mary, the first known American to have typhoid fever.

Once a popular destination for people who like to explore abandoned places, North Brother Island is now closed off to the public and has many restrictions set in place.

Heard Island

Heard Island is located between Madagascar and Antarctica and is technically owned by Australia. It is also one of the most restricted places on the planet. Highly unexplored, the island is totally barren and houses two active volcanos.

Because of the landscape is fragile, the Australian government has restricted access to anyone wanting to venture onto the terrain.

Tomb Of Qin Shi Huang

The Tomb of Qin Shi Huang, China's first Emperor, is a mausoleum that has been situated underneath a pyramid for more than 2,000 years. While much on the contents of the tomb remains a mystery, it is still considered one of the greatest discoveries of all time.

To keep the tomb in pristine condition and pay respect to the late emperor, the Chinese government has forbid people from entering or excavating its contents.

Pravcicka Brana

Pravcicka Brana is a sandstone archway located in the Czech Republic and used to be a hot tourist destination in the region up until 1981. Then, it was decided, to preserve the natural archway, people would no longer be allowed to cross it.

Now, it is one of the most restricted places in the wrold.

Niihau Island

Even though Niihau Island has 160 residents, no one else is allowed to step foot on the island.

To preserve the wildlife and vegetation, the only way for people who don't live there to get onto the island is either to be part of the United States Navy or have a relative who lives on the island.

Not only is this one of the youngest national parks in Thailand, but it's also rich in coral life, home to a turtle sanctuary, and one of the quietest destinations to swim in the tropical sunshine.

Wat Phra Keaw (Emerald Temple) is Thailand's most important royal chapel and the main attraction at the stunning Grand Palace in Bangkok . Built in 1782, the palace complex used to be the residence of the King, but it now serves as a museum and place of worship.

Besides the Emerald Temple, other important buildings include the throne hall, Phra Thinang Racharuedee (an outdoor audience chamber), and the former sleeping quarters of the monarch.

Wat Chaiwattanaram is Ayutthaya's most important ancient temple–and also one of the few you can climb to the top for breathtaking sunset views. The historic City of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dates back to the 13 th century.

Besides Ayutthaya's other attractions , there are almost 200 ruins in the 289-hectare park today, including chedis, Khmer-style stupas, a 42-meter-long reclining golden Buddha, and a number of impressive Buddhist relics.

The Red Lotus Sea (officially called Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake) is a seasonal marvel that you can only experience between November and February, when the bright pink flowers are in full bloom.

Especially magnificent during sunrise because of the effect of the light bouncing on the flower-blanketed water, the colors are better experienced from a boat as you lazily float around the lake. Phu Phra Bat Historical Park is nearby and offers a rare chance to see prehistoric rock paintings.

Seven tiers that end in an emerald green water pool make Erawan Falls one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand. It's one of the highlights of Kanchanaburi .

Reached after a trek through thick rainforest, the climb to the top tiers requires navigating rickety ladders and slippery limestone trails–a difficult ascent rewarded by the beautiful scenery and the occasional sighting of macaques and water monitor lizards.

Also known as "the city of three mists," the Mae Hong Son mountain range is a popular place for hikers to catch the sunrise. Because of its remote location, Mae Hong Son doesn't get as many visitors as other destinations in northern Thailand, which means it's a quiet paradise for adventurous holidaymakers and a great place to capture images without the crowds.

Travelers head here to explore the thickly forested hills, golden deep caves, and other things to do in Mae Hong Son Province .

Less than an hour away by ferry from the tourist attractions of Phuket , the white, laid-back beaches of Koh Phi Phi were the setting for Leonardo DiCaprio's movie The Beach . No wonder this island is one of the top day trips from Phuket .

Steep limestone cliffs, lush rainforests, and hidden caves line up the Andaman Sea coast and offer stunning views from the water and from up above the many beautiful viewpoints across the islands.

The Ratchaprapha Dam is one of the most photographed spots inside Khao Sok National Park. The lake is surrounded by a breathtaking view of thick jungle, limestone cliffs, and crystal blue waters. A large variety of animals call Khao Sok National Park home–from elephants to wild boars to bears.

In addition to water-related activities, the park also offers lots of trekking opportunities and amazing views from the top of its many hills.

Koh Yao Noi, halfway between Krabi and Phuket, is one of Thailand's least touristy beaches. Few backpackers make it here, and it's too far from the well-traveled roads to be a sunbathing favorite. Instead, Koh Yao Noi is a laid-back haven of thick mangroves, unspoiled emerald waters, and some of the best limestone rock climbing in Thailand.

Though technically a peninsula and not an island, Railay Beach is one of the top beaches in Thailand . It's only accessible by boat because the towering limestone cliffs cut it off from the mainland. Private, quiet, and the stuff of dreams, Railay also offers chances to explore in the form of dense wetlands, thick rainforest, and long-tail boat rides to neighboring uninhabited shores.

Thailand's largest national park is mostly covered in evergreen rainforest and home to a large number of wild elephants. One of Kaeng Krachan's most famous spots is Pa La-U waterfall, known for its massive population of butterflies, but visitors can also explore ancient coastal caves, hike up the forested mountains, or dip their toes in sun-soaked lakes and ponds throughout the park.

When you close your eyes and think of the sugary shores of Thailand's most exquisite islands, what you're probably envisioning are the islands of Krabi province .

Scattered in the Andaman Sea, these picture-perfect uninhabited islands are known for their towering limestone karst formations that rise up from the softest, whitest sand you've ever seen. Krabi's beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world.

Ringed in sparkling turquoise water, these postcard backdrops don't need any help in creating the perfect photo setup.

Wreathed in nothing but powder-soft sand, Koh Samui's beaches are among the most beautiful and photogenic in Thailand. From the energetic Chaweng Beach to the far more tranquil and undeveloped beaches of the western coast, you can find any type of vibe you're looking for all around the island.

What remains consistent, however, is that all the beaches are picture-perfect, with endless sand, swaying green palms, and gently lapping turquoise water.

Bangkok has more than its fair share of temples – and to try to photograph them all would take a lifetime. But one of the most beautiful Bangkok temples is Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn.

Perched on the Thonburi West Bank of the Chao Phraya River, this slender pyramid of a temple can be seen for miles in any direction, and provides gorgeous vantage points no matter where you stand. Climb the temple for views back across to Bangkok, or simply stand on the eastern bank looking over at where Wat Arun breaks up the skyline.

The temple complex itself is quite impressive and an undeniable landmark along the Chao Phraya River.
