Primus, Mastodon Plot U.S. Summer Tour
By Ryan Reed
Primus and Mastodon will unite this summer for a massive U.S. tour. The co-headlining, 43-date trek launches May 6th in Morrison, Colorado and concludes July 7th in Phoenix.
The joint trek promotes the bands’ respective 2017 projects. Last year, Mastodon released their seventh LP, Emperor of Sand , and a follow-up EP, Cold Dark Place , featuring a new song, “Toe to Toes,” and three leftover tracks from the sessions of 2014’s Once More ‘Round the Sun .
Primus issued their ninth album, The Desaturating Seven , a concept record themed around the Italian author Ul de Rico’s 1978 children’s book, The Rainbow Goblins . That LP marked the first album of original material from the acclaimed line-up featuring bassist-singer Les Claypool, guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander.

Primus and Mastodon announce 43-date North American summer tour
Primus and Mastodon are heading out on the road together this summer for an extensive 43-date North American tour
Primus and Mastodon have announced an extensive 43-date North American tour for later this year.
The dates are in support of Primus’ ninth studio album, The Desaturating Seven , which was released earlier this year. The tour will hit 43 dates across North America, and they’ll be joined on the road by alt-metal giants Mastodon. All Them Witches will join the two bands on selected dates.
The album and tour sees the return of the definitive Primus line-up: singer/bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde, and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander, for the first time since 1995.
Claypool says of the album: “It’s a story about gluttonous individuals sucking the colours out of the world. The overuse of resources by the greedy elite, and how the meek masses can overcome them in the end by unifying. It seemed pretty relevant these days.”
Tickets will go on general sale via Primus’ official site on Feb 2nd. Presale starts on Jan 30th. See full tour dates below.

PRIMUS And MASTODON To Join Forces For U.S. Tour
PRIMUS will join forces with MASTODON for a late spring/early summer tour of the U.S. Kicking off May 6 at Red Rocks, the trek will cross the country and back, with stops at Austin 360 Amphitheater, The Fox in Atlanta, Coney Island Amphitheater in Brooklyn, Northerly Island in Chicago, Greek Theaters in San Francisco and Los Angeles and many more before ending July 7 in Phoenix.
Pre-sale tickets start Tuesday, January 30 local time (password: Goblins) and general onsale is Friday, February 2.
PRIMUS 's ninth studio album, "The Desaturating Seven" , led the band back to some of the sounds and styles of its earlier days and has received praise from Consequence Of Sound , Rolling Stone , AV Club and more. The album marks the return of the definitive PRIMUS lineup — singer/bassist Les Claypool , guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander — for its first album of original music since 1995.
Inspiration for the album came from a 1978 children's book called "The Rainbow Goblins" by the Italian author and artist Ui de Rico . In the story seven goblins come to the valley where rainbows are born, intending to steal the rainbows and eat them. The valley, though, knows that the goblins are coming, and makes a plan to thwart the wicked creatures by hiding the rainbow. After the goblins are caught in their own nets, the flowers release the colors of the rainbow and drown the goblins, and in gratitude, the rainbow turns the flowers into beautiful birds who fly across the valley in freedom.
"It's a story about gluttonous individuals sucking the colors out of the world," says Les Claypool . "The overuse of resources by the greedy elite, and how the meek masses can overcome them in the end by unifying. It seemed pretty relevant these days."

Primus Announce 2018 U.S. Tour With Mastodon
Continuing their promotion of last year's The Desaturating Seven , Primus have announced a two-month tour of the U.S. They'll be joined on the road by Mastodon.
They'll begin on May 6 at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colo., and wrap it all up on July 7 at Phoenix's Comerica Theatre. Tickets for all shows go on sale to the general public this Friday with a pre-sale beginning tomorrow with the password "Goblins." You can see all the dates below and get full ticketing details at Primus' website .
The Desaturating Seven was based on a book called The Rainbow Goblins by Ul Del Rico that Primus frontman Les Claypool used to read to his children. The plot centers on seven goblins who "pull the color out of the world."
"The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately, and I thought, 'This would make good fodder for a piece of music,'" he said. "The use of color and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony and deceit vs. unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it's about time someone brought 'Goblin Rock' back to the fold."
Last night, Mastodon took home the Best Metal Performance Grammy for "Sultan's Curse." The track, which the band cross-promoted with its own beer , appeared on Emperor of Sand .

Grammy Winners Mastodon to Hit the Road on North American Tour With Primus
These are the best of times for Mastodon . Fresh off last night's Grammy win for Best Metal Performance, the veteran band will hit the road in late spring with Primus .
It should be a rather unique pairing, with Mastodon continually breaking new ground and Primus being on the more experimental side as well. "We are so excited to be hitting the road with Primus, they're one of our favorite bands! This tour is going to be a blast! Don't miss it, let's get weird," state Mastodon, summing up what fans should expect.
Mastodon will be promoting their Emperor of Sand album, which was nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys. While they didn't win that category, Mastodon did earn their first Grammy win for Best Metal Performance for the song "Sultan's Curse" off the disc. In a nice moment for metal as a whole, drummer Brann Dailor stated during his acceptance, "Thank you to Judas Priest and Black Sabbath for creating this kind of music that we call home."
Primus, meanwhile, received raves for their 2017 album, The Desaturating Seven . The disc marked the return of drummer Tim Alexander, playing with the band for the first time on record since 1995's Tales From the Punchbowl . The seven-song disc features the tracks "The Seven" and "The Scheme."
The tour gets underway May 6 in Denver at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater, with shows booked all the way into July. Ticket pre-sales for the run start this Wednesday (Jan. 31) at 10AM local time, with the public on-sale starting Friday (Feb. 2) at 10AM local time. For additional ticketing info, check here .

The Desaturating Seven led Primus back to some of the sounds and styles of their earlier days and has received praise from Consequence of Sound , Rolling Stone , AV Club and more. The album marks the return of the definitive Primus line-up—singer/bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde, and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander—for its first album of original music since 1995.
Inspiration for the album came from a 1978 children’s book called The Rainbow Goblins by the Italian author and artist Ui de Rico.
"It’s a story about gluttonous individuals sucking the colors out of the world,” says Les Claypool. “The overuse of resources by the greedy elite, and how the meek masses can overcome them in the end by unifying. It seemed pretty relevant these days.”

MASSIVE NEWS metal fans!! The legendary PRIMUS are continuing on their tour from last year for another two months this summer, and they’ll be joined on the road by none other than Mastodon!! Coming to the Greek Theatre Berkeley on Friday 29th June 2018 – be there!! Grab your tickets as soon as possible to guarantee your place at the show – it’s going to be an awesome one!!
Late last year, Primus released their ninth studio album, “The Desaturating Seven,” a concept album centered around “The Rainbow Goblins,” children’s book by Ui de Rico. The album takes them back to an older sound, more prog-rock than they have been recently. Called the “the tightest, most focused album of Primus' career,” by PopMatters, it’s no surprise that “The Desaturating Seven,” was received to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, as it marks the first return of the band’s ultimate lineup – Les Claypool, Larry "Ler" LaLonde and Tim "Herb" Alexander — and the first album with that lineup since 1995.
As for Mastodon, they’ll also be supporting a recent album – “Emperor of Sand,” released March last year. Also a concept album, its storyline centers around a desert nomad who is given the death sentence, and themes of very real mortality are heavily reflected upon in this fictional tale. The album sold 43,000 copies in its first week of release, making it the band’s most successful to date!!
Get ready to hear all the new material from both bands live – get your Primus and Mastodon tickets NOW while they last!!
