BJÖRN ULVAEUS ( Music & Lyrics ) 1945 Björn was born on 25 April in Gothenburg. When he was six years old, the family moved to the small town of Västervik, and this is where Björn grew up. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skif e. By the early Sixties, he was a member of a folk group called the West Bay Singers. 1963 The group entered a talent contest arranged by Swedish radio. This led to discovery by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson and his partner, Bengt Bernhag. Stig and Bengt had recently started a record company called Polar Music. The band acquired a new name, the Hootenanny Singers, and quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups of the Sixties. 1966 Björn had a chance meeting with Benny Andersson, himself a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. They hit it off and wrote their rst song together, ‘Isn’t It Easy to Say’. Björn recorded a couple of solo singles in the late Sixties, at which point he also started concentrating more on his collaboration with Benny Andersson. 1970 Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. 1971 Björn and Agnetha married on 6 July. 1972-82 ABBA. 1982 Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with lyricist Tim Rice. 1984 A concept album for Chess was released in the autumn. 1986 The musical opened in London’s West End in May. 1988 Chess received its Broadway premiere. A reworked version of the musical opened in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002. 1990 Björn and Benny decided to write a new musical. This time, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish, and they chose the Emigrants novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work. 1995 The resulting musical, Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla), opened in October. The show ran for three and a half years at various theatres in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra, and has involved himself in the stagings of MAMMA MIA! . 2008 MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE was released. 2016 MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY opened in Stockholm in January, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018 MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN was released.

Theater Review: MAMMA MIA! (25th Anniversary Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: MAMMA MIA! (25th Anniversary Tour)

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC

The theater-going public may never get enough of Mamma Mia! Since the Swedish musical opened in London in 1999 there have been 50 productions throughout the world and the international audience now exceeds 65 million. The ABBA-based musical is playing a one week visit to San Diego and judging by the reaction from the full house yesterday, November 7 at the San Diego Civic Theatre , the show has lost none of its appeal, especially for the many groups of young female viewers who cheered every song from “Chiquitta” to “Voulez-Vous.”

national tour of mamma mia

For those who have been out of touch with musical theater for the last quarter of a century, Mamma Mia! unfolds on a Greek island. American expatriate Donna Sheridan operates a small taverna on the island while raising her daughter, Sophie. The narrative revolves around Sophie’s attempt to identify her real father. From reading her mother’s diary, Sophie discovers that her father could be one of three men who had relationships with Donna nine months before Sophie’s birth. Sophie invites the three men — Bill Austin, Harry Bright, and Sam Carmichael — to her wedding, hoping to discover which one is her true dad.

Agreed, this is a tenuous storyline on which to erect a full-length musical, but book author Catherine Johnson has done a noble job of injecting 22 ABBA songs by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson into her tale. Although all the songs were written separately, Johnson makes them fit naturally into the story. The unaware spectator could easily accept that the songs were actually composed as a cohesive score specifically for the show.

national tour of mamma mia

The ABBA hits are all there, from the title song to “Waterloo,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “SOS,” and “Take a Chance on Me.” The megahit of the score is “Dancing Queen,” first sung during the opening act and then as the major number in the star-spangled finale. “Dancing Queen” drew a frenzied reaction from the 1999 opening night London audience and immediately cemented Mamma Mia! as a musical that would be around for a long, long time (it is now the sixth longest-running show in West End history).

national tour of mamma mia

What really elevates this production into a genuine must-see show are the performances by Christine Sherrill as Donna and Alisa Melendez (a native of nearby Carlsbad) as Sophie. Both have expressive, powerful voices and strong acting chops and their mother-daughter conflict near the end of the show is stirring and credible. As the three men in Donna’s past, Rob Marnell (Harry Bright), Jim Newman (Bill Austin), and Victor Wallace (Sam Carmichael) do what they can with paper thin roles.

national tour of mamma mia

I had difficulties with Jalynn Steele and Carly Sakolove as Donna’s girlfriends Tanya and Rosie respectively. Granted the characters are in the show primarily for comic relief, but they would be funnier and if they took their feet off the slapstick pedal and just let the comedy flow naturally.

national tour of mamma mia

The show’s motor is driven by Anthony Van Laast’s choreography, a rousing series of production numbers executed with inexhaustible enthusiasm and precision by the youthful chorus. Howard Harrison’s lighting designs created a series of stunning visual images. A seven-piece band laid down a solid soft rock accompaniment. Phyllida Lloyd is the director, Mark Thompson is the production designer, and Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken are the sound designers.

national tour of mamma mia

I have been an unapologetic Mamma Mia! idolator since I first saw the show almost 20 years ago. I have always been impressed with how much more ambitious artistically it was than it needed to be. The production could have coasted solely on the ABBA music and tossed Brown’s story, but then I suspect it wouldn’t have lasted 25 years and counting.

Christine Sherrill celebrating 25th anniversary tour of 'Mamma Mia!' in a familiar role

The show stars the veteran chicago actress in a role she’s performed more than 2,000 times, in a musical built around the music of abba..

Christine Sherrill (Donna Sheridan), and the Company of MAMMA MIA! 25th Anniversary Tour perform on stage.

Joan Marcus

Christine Sherrill is certainly not “only 17” any longer — but she’s still having the time of her life as a dancing queen in the ABBA-infused hit show, “Mamma Mia!”

And Sherrill’s character’s name isn’t officially “dancing queen” — it’s Donna Sheridan — but it’s probably a title she deserves after performing, by her estimate, more than 2,000 times in the musical, arriving this week at the James M. Nederlander Theatre as part of a 25th anniversary tour.

“Clearly, I can’t go out with the kids in the show,” said Sherrill of how she paces herself for the demanding role. “I practice a lot of yoga. I can’t drink. I can’t talk excessively after the show or socialize.”

There has to be some socializing in Chicago, for a woman whose theater life kicked off here. You may have seen Sherrill, who attended Streamwood High School and Northern Illinois University, at Drury Lane Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, Northlight Theater, Marriott Theatre, and on a host of other local stages.

Sherrill name dropped Sean Allan Krill, a Chicago acting veteran in town to star in “Sunday in the Park with George” at the Studebaker Theater in May. The two have recently been comparing notes, she said, on what it’s like as a more mature actor to handle the nightly rigors of the stage life.

For those who don’t know the show, “Mamma Mia!,” which was also made into a 2008 movie starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth among many others, is about a young woman who invites three middle-aged men to her Greek island wedding in hopes of learning which one is actually her father. Long-buried emotions surface as Donna, Sherrill’s character and the bride’s mother, confronts her past. And what better way to unleash those emotions than with the immortal words of Swedish super band, ABBA?

Sherrill said she’s often asked if she’s grown tired of a musical that she’s been connected to, off and on, since 2006, including a Las Vegas residency production in the early 2000s at the now-defunct Tropicana resort. No, she reveals, because this version of the show feels “completely different” — even though little about what happens on stage has changed.

“It’s the resurgence of ABBA and the disco venue in younger generations,” she said. “So we’re meeting a lot of young kids who have not even been to musical theater, but they are coming for the ABBA music.”

“Mamma Mia!” encourages audience participation. On this latest tour, audiences have been much more “assertive” than in the past, Sherrill said. From time to time, ushers have had to tell audience members during the show to sit down.

“We may have had one female audience member storm the stage to sing. She didn’t make it …. She was really enamored by Sam (Carmichael, one of Donna’s former flames and played in the show by Victor Wallace),” Sherrill said.

As she prepares to take the stage here in Chicago, Sherrill said she’s grateful for the opportunities she had here that helped launch her career, including being cast as Norma Desmond in the 2012 Drury Lane Theatre production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard,” for which she won a Jeff Award.

Christine Sherrill stars as Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard" at Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace in 2013.

Brett Beiner

“It brought me into a new career of playing leading ladies; prior to that, I found myself playing a lot of comic relief, ... a certain kind of role that was dim,” she said.

She credits former Drury Lane artistic director Bill Osetek with (as the ABBA song goes) taking a chance on her.

“It was a challenge for me, and I felt like he took a risk,” she said.

As for what she’s particularly looking forward to now that’s back in her early theatrical home, Sherrill said: “I’ve already made my Mother’s Day reservations for Petterino’s (restaurant).”

Carlsbad native leads national tour of ‘Mamma Mia!’

L’Oréal Roaché, left, Alisa Melendez and Haley Wright in "Mamma Mia!" national tour.

Alisa Melendez, who plays Sophie in the production arriving next week at the San Diego Civic Theatre, has loved the ABBA jukebox musical for most of her life

When Alisa Melendez was growing up in Carlsbad, she decorated the walls of her bedroom with pictures of the singers, actors and theater productions she loved most — including a photo of Sophie, the 20-year-old central character in her family’s favorite musical: “Mamma Mia!”

Now it’s Melendez who could end up on someone’s bedroom wall someday. She’s starring as Sophie in the just-launched North American touring production of “Mamma Mia!” which will arrive at the San Diego Civic Theatre on Tuesday for a six-day run.

Alisa Melendez - Headshot

Melendez can’t believe she’s lucky enough to be starring in “Mamma Mia!” and bringing it home to San Diego County where family and friends will be able to see her perform.

The Carlsbad native found her passion for singing in church and at Tri-City Christian School in Vista and the Coronado School of the Arts. After graduating from an arts high school in Orange County, she earned her bachelor’s degree in musical theater from New York’s Pace University in 2020. She’s been working ever since, including making her Broadway debut last year in the Old Globe-born musical “Almost Famous.”

San Diego is the second stop on the 25th anniversary “Mamma Mia!” tour, which launched last week in Chicago. It’s scheduled to visit more than 35 cities in 2024.

“Mamma Mia!” is one of the most popular jukebox musicals of all time. Launched in 1999, it features the songs of ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus wrapped around the multi-generational love story. Sophie is the soon-to-be-married daughter of single mom Donna, who runs a taverna on a Greek island. Sophie wants her father to walk her down the aisle, but she’s never met him. Donna had flings with three men who briefly visited the island as tourists 20 years ago and she never saw them again. Secretly, Sophie invites all three men to the island under the guise of Donna, and when they arrive, unexpected sparks fly.

Melendez recently answered some questions about her theater journey and her love for “Mamma Mia!” from the road.

Q: How has the “Mamma Mia!” tour been going, and what does it feel like to be starring in the show during its San Diego visit next week?

A: It’s been an incredible process, with an incredible team. I cannot wait for the world to see the magic this cast has been bringing to this show daily! We have our first preview in Elmira, New York, tonight and it is sold out. All of our performances here are at full capacity and I hear that’s becoming the norm for our upcoming stops as well. So get your tickets! The energy is already incredibly high, and I am elated to be able to share this with so many more people, including my hometown.

To return to San Diego as Sophie in “Mamma Mia!” is a blessing and a dream that I can’t believe is now my reality. This is for my home, my city that helped support and blossom me. My performance in this show will be a small but beautiful gift I can give to my home in return for loving me so well.

Jalynn Steele, Christine Sherrill and Carly Sakolove in the national touring production of "Mamma Mia!"

Q: I read that you’ve loved “Mamma Mia!” since you were in your tweens. What do you love about the musical?

A: I mean, it’s ABBA. I was obsessed. I grew up with ABBA and “Dancing Queen” blasting through the house on the weekends. When my parents came back from seeing their first Broadway show in New York City, “Mamma Mia!,” they brought back that cast album and it was on repeat. I thought it was incredible to give a certain life and story to the words of ABBA. It highlights love, joy, and freedom in such a beautiful way. I couldn’t help but get up and dance. I couldn’t help but sing every song. I couldn’t help but fall in love.

Q: When did you catch the acting bug and did you perform in theater in your elementary and middle school years?

A: I grew up singing in church where I played my first role ever as Mary in the Nativity scene and boy did I take that seriously! I did every show I could at my little Tri-City Christian school and community theater. I loved being onstage. I loved telling stories. I was inspired and encouraged to pursue acting at a very young age. That passion grew and flourished though middle school into high school, where I attended Coronado School of the Arts before transferring to Orange County School of the Arts to study musical theater.

Q: One of our reporters interviewed your mom, Lorraine, back in 2015 about your long daily commute by train to Santa Ana to attend the Orange County School of the Arts. Can you explain why it was important to you to make that sacrifice at such a young age?

A: I knew what I wanted. I knew what I was good and my family did, too. To have parents that supported my dream and what it took to pursue it is something I am forever grateful for. The importance of that sacrifice is so high to me because I think it created a foundation of what hard work felt like and the pay-off that came with it. That part of my life has always just put into perspective what this means to me — making each goal that I am blessed to achieve feel so extraordinary.

Laura Barone drove up to the Oceanside Transit Center on Tuesday with a plate of scrambled eggs, ham and toast balanced in her lap.

Oct. 11, 2015

Q: You appeared in the pre-Broadway tryout of “Almost Famous” at the Old Globe, then made your Broadway debut as a swing/understudy in the cast. Was achieving your Broadway dream as special as you hoped it would be?

A: Making my Broadway debut with “Almost Famous” was the ultimate dream come true, and then some. I never thought I would have the honor to debut as an understudy/swing and feeling that extra special sense of electricity and love from the cast and audiences every moment. Saving the show and bringing a whole new energy to the show is truly an honor, and to be carried by a cast full of so much joy and support is something I will never forget.

Q: When you’re not on the road, do you live in New York City? If so, where? And what do you love about living in the city?

A: Uptown, baby! I love living in Manhattan and the community, diversity and spontaneity that New York City brings to my life every day.

Q: I read a story that you grew up in a family of chiropractors. How old were you when you realized you didn’t want to join the family business?

A: I grew up at my parents’ practice, Gold Coast Chiropractic in sunny Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and have witnessed the magic that they do there my whole life. My brothers, too, who have gone on to also practice chiropractic with both of their spouses. I am so proud of them and the work that my family of six chiropractors do. Never have I ever considered joining the family business in any role other than biggest cheerleader. And they are my biggest cheerleaders, too. Always have been!

Things to do, subscriber only, entertainment | “mamma mia” at the fisher theatre still makes dancing queens of us all, 25 years later.

national tour of mamma mia

And 25 years later the show — at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre through Sunday, April 28 — it still reigns as one of if not the best of its ilk, turning “here we go again” into a rallying cry for anyone with a taste for glitter, sequins, camp, indelible pop songs and a twisted, geometrical love story.

Built around songs from the Swedish quartet’s ABBA, “Mamma Mia” was the first truly successful narrative jukebox musical — not a stage biography but a new story that used that body of established hits a storytelling devices. The shifts into song are still occasionally abrupt, but it’s usually easy to forgive the transition by the time the first chorus hits.

Much of “Mamma Mia’s” enduring charm is in the durability of those tunes; composers Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus aren’t one of the history’s top songwriting teams for no good reason. But Catherine Johnson’s book sometimes gets short shrift; it’s a story that’s hard to get tired of, touching lightly but still resonantly on themes ranging from romance to mortality and aspirations unfulfilled as a Donna Sheridan — feminist pop star turned single working mother — prepares for her 20-year-old daughter Sophie’s wedding on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi.

When Sophie snoops through her mother’s diary and invites the three men who could possibly be her father to the nuptials, hellacious fun breaks loose — but “Mamma Mia” also finds a bit of poignancy in the characters’ reflections about their lives and the people they’ve grown up to be.

Rest assured that the fun eclipses all that, however, as another nimble cast romps through “Mamma Mia’s” joyful production numbers, whether its Donna and her former Dynamos bandmates donning disco fashions for “Dancing Queen,” a male chorus line high-kicking through “Lay All Your Love on Me” in snorkels and flippers or the three potential dads engulfed by Sophie and her friends in “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).” The sound mix is hot and the stage sets are even more minimal, but those only contribute to a stripped-down, over-the-top attitude that serves the show ell.

The standout moments come one after the other, although the show-stopper is “Chiquitita,” delivered by Donna (Christine Sherrill), Rosie (Jasmine Overbaugh) and Tanya (Jalynn Steele) as a brilliant physical comedy that borders on farce. Sherrill also eats up the stage during her solo performances of “One of Us” and a diva-caliber “The Winner Takes All,” while she shares affecting duets with Victor Wallace (as former paramour Sam Carmichael) and with Blake Price (as Harry Bright, another past love) on “SOS” and “Our Last Summer,” respectively.

performers on stage

And Overbaugh teams with Jim Newman (Bill Austin, another past…well, you know) for a hilarious vocal and physical exchange during “Take a Chance on Me.”

And then there’s “Mamma Mia’s” encore, well-known enough that nobody in their right mind leaves during the bows. The extra renditions of “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen” and “Waterloo” — the latter with Wallace, Price and Newman sporting their own lurid outfits — sends the audience out on a genuine high. After all these years that’s no spoiler alert, but it’s one of the many joys “Mamma Mia” continues to spoil us with.

“Mama Mia” runs Tuesday, April 23 to April 28 at the Fisher Theatre, 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit. 313-872-1000 or broadwayindetroit.com .

Apple on Thursday reported a 10% drop in iPhone sales for the second fiscal quarter, dropping from $51.33 billion to $45.96 billion, year-over-year. Apple’s slow adoption of AI versus competitors like Google and Microsoft likely played a role in consumers’ decision to hold off on purchasing a new iPhone. According to an Equity casting notice, a new national tour of the hit musical, Mamma Mia!, will hit the road in 2023.

The tour will feature direction and chroreography by original creatives, director Phyllida Lloyd and choreographer Anthony Van Laast .

Catherine Johnson 's sunny, funny story of love, laughter and friendship set to the pop hits of ABBA has been thrilling London audiences for over 10 years. More recently it became the biggest British hit movie of all time when the three women who created the worldwide stage smash hit adapted it for the silver screen. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA's songs, from "Dancing Queen" and "Take A Chance On Me" to "Super Trouper" and "Thank You For The Music," MAMMA MIA!'s enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek Island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Over 40 million people worldwide have been dancing in the aisles to this sensational musical, and London is where it all began back in 1999.

Mamma Mia comes to Naparima Bowl in May

Michelle Tardieu-Arrale plays Donna in the local production of Mamma Mia. -

MANY people have seen and loved the movie, maybe even sung along to the songs of Abba in the romantic-comedy musical. Now get ready for the stage production of Mamma Mia, which comes to the Naparima Bowl, San Fernando, for six shows between May 2-5.

Producer Andrew Seepersad, a Trinidadian now resident in Toronto, Canada, told Newsday this musical represents part of a three-four year journey he has taken to rebuild the south theatre community

national tour of mamma mia

In a telephone interview from Toronto, Seepersad, the brother of Justice Frank Seepersad, said growing up in San Fernando, the theatre space used to be vibrant. Post-covid19, his observation is that the theatre industry is still suffering from the after-effects of the pandemic.

His long-term goal, he said, is to revitalise music theatre, which he sees as a key contributor to the performing arts landscape.

Being a southerner and having cut his teeth in the industry through his alma mater Presentation College, San Fernando, and at the Naparima Bowl, he now wants to re-establish the Bowl as the home of theatre in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Broadway musical production is being presented by Proscenium Theatre Company (PTC), headed by Seepersad and Mervyn de Goeas.

PTC, founded in 2010, is best remembered for three of its large-scale musicals – Rent, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Wiz – as well as others including Rabbit Hole and Moon on a Rainbow Shawl.

Seepersad said it is the first time this popular Broadway musical, which debuted in London in 1999 and has become a global phenomenon, is coming to Trinidad.

“I don’t think it has ever been played to audiences in the Caribbean.”

The story is about a young woman named Sophie who wants her father to walk her down the aisle, but does not know who he is.

From the pages of her mother’s (Donna) diaries, she discovered that one of three of Donna’s past lovers – Sam, Bill and Harry – could be her dad. She secretly invites them to her mother’s hotel. Their arrival results in conflict, misunderstandings and reconciliations.

The movie, which starred Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, is told through the use of Abba’s music such as Dancing Queen, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Take a Chance on Me, Thank You for the Music, Money, Money, Money, The Winner Takes It All, Voulez-Vous, and of course, Mamma Mia.

Seepersad explained while he is not authorised to change the script, the cast would be totally local, with no foreign accents.

It is being headlined by real-life mother and daughter Aurora Tardieu and Michelle Tardieu-Attale, who play mother and daughter Sophie and Donna. The two have been members of the Marionettes Chorale.

The show will also feature actor Cecilia Salazar who plays Tanya, Errol James who is cast as one of the potential fathers – Harry, Stefan Williams as Bill, and Wayne Lee-Sing as the third possible dad, Sam.

On the prohibitive cost of staging a play of this quality, Seepersad, said, “The idea of producing musical theatre is crazy expensive. There are not many people who are able to do it or who are willing to take the risk of doing it.”

Blessed with the finance and passion, Seepersad, an MBA/doctoral candidate in innovation management, has been able to combine his business and artistic acumen before investing.

“I am always very thoughtful (about) how I produce, what I spend money on and how we set up something. I am not going to start a show knowing I am going to lose money.

He and de Goeas take on a lot of do-it-yourself projects to save on costs.

national tour of mamma mia

“I always do the sets on design and build and Mervyn almost always does our costuming. We do our own make up and generally do our own marketing. We don’t hire anybody to do things we can do ourselves.”

Nevertheless, Seepersad said any production his team undertakes is done with leaving a lasting memory in mind so audiences will want to come back.

“We don’t have a ready or steady audience. and that is what we are trying to build.”
