Whether you’re living in Rota, Spain year-round or just visiting, you’ll fall in love with this laid-back beach town on the sparkling Bay of Cádiz. Most of the things to do in Rota involve outdoor recreation, eating, drinking, or relaxing. Sounds pretty good, right?

Here are 12 of the best ways to enjoy Rota!

Contents (click to expand)

1. Visit the Amazing Beaches

With Rota’s beautiful weather and location on the coast of southern Spain, it’s no surprise that the beaches are the top attraction. Rota, Spain beaches are beautifully maintained and luxuriously long; they extend for several miles along the town’s entire coastline.

Whether you want to swim in the ocean, run or walk along the shore, watch the kite surfers (a common sight on windy days), or simply relax in the sun, you can spend all day at Rota’s beaches.

2. Stroll, Eat, and Drink Along the Boardwalk

El Paseo Maritim o is the boardwalk that runs along Rota’s most beautiful beach: Playa de la Costilla . Dotted with bars and restaurants, el Paseo Maritim o is a flurry of activity, with people dining al fresco, strolling, or walking their dogs.

It’s particularly busy on weekends, when local families eat at the restaurants and make their lunchtime meal into an all-day affair!

3. Paddle, Surf, or Sail in the Bay of Cádiz

Rota is an ideal place for water sports, including kayaking, standup paddle boarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing . . . you name it! You can rent equipment or take lessons from local outfitters, such as Club Surf Educa or Over Limit Centro Náutico .

Naval Station Rota MWR’s Outdoor Recreation Center also rents kayaks and standup paddle boards (plus car mounts, if you need them). Contact them about lessons and organized tours!

4. Get Your Exercise in the Pine Forest

Where the Paseo Maritimo ends at the north end of Playa de la Costilla , this beautiful and fragrant pine forest begins. Located on the sand dunes above the beach, it has a raised wooden trail that winds through the pine groves, with several offshoots that lead to gazebos with panoramic views of the Bay of Cádiz.

Depending on the time of day, many parts of the pine forest have shade, making it the perfect place for a walk, run, or bike ride. It’s also a very scenic route to travel from one end of Rota to the other!

5. Ride the Rota Greenway Nature Trail

El Camino Natural de Rota , which starts here , is a mixed-surface trail that passes through Costa Ballena and continues on to Chipiona. It traverses the beautiful rural areas surrounding Rota (you are likely to see horses or even a herd of sheep), and it’s a change of scenery from the beach.

You want a hybrid or mountain bike for this trail – it’s not hilly, but some parts of it have rocks/gravel.

If you don’t have your own wheels, Rota MWR has you covered! The Outdoor Recreation Center rents mountain bikes (and beach cruisers). Rentals come with helmet and lock.

6. Eat Gourmet Ice Cream

After all that exercise, it’s time for dessert! By far, the top sweet treat in Rota is ice cream. Some locals would debate us on this, but we think it’s no contest: the best ice cream in Rota is at Margarita La Fresca !

With dozens of artfully-presented choices, including numerous variations of chocolate, delicious dairy-free sorbet, and gourmet flavors like Fig & Cheese or Carrot Cake, it’s hard to pick just one or two.

If you live in Rota , we challenge you to try every flavor. In town for a visit? You better get started, you have a lot of ice cream to eat!

You have two great options for golfing in Rota. The first is the Naval Station Rota golf course , a nice track that is conveniently located just inside the gate of Rota Naval Base. The other Rota golf course is Costa Ballena Golf Club , a 27-hole championship course with incredible ocean views and one of the best practice facilities in Europe. With your military ID, you can get a reduced rate after 1300.

For the 19th hole, enjoy a meal at their restaurant with beautiful views overlooking the greens.

8. Visit Rota’s Historic Center

With narrow, winding streets lined with Mediterranean-style buildings, Rota’s Centro Histórico has the feel of old Europe. Indeed, the town of Rota dates back to the 12th century.

A castle with a palm tree in front of it

Some of Rota’s historic sites are Castillo de Luna (Moon Castle), Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la O (Our Lady of the O Parish Church), and Torre de la Merced (Merced Tower), which also houses Rota’s tourist office.

9. Catch an Epic Sunset at a Chiringuito

Chiringuitos are beachfront bars located right on the sand. Some chiringuitos have very good food, while at others, the main attraction is the view.

A Rota establishment that checks both boxes is Azucar de Cuba . With Cuban-influenced cuisine, a range of refreshing cocktails, and lively salsa music in the background, this is the perfect spot to grab a table and watch a Rota sunset.

10. Get Your People-Watching Fix

Spend a few hours eating or sipping a drink in one of Rota’s busy squares ( plazas ), and you’re experiencing life like a local! Two of our favorites for people-watching are Plaza de Jesus Nazareno and Plaza Barroso .

Plaza de Jesus Nazareno is best known for the iconic red Rota sign, and it’s a major thoroughfare between Playa de la Costilla and downtown Rota. The plaza is surrounded by restaurants, but La Habanera is one of our favorite coffee shops!

The red Rota sign with the beach in the background

Plaza Barroso , just around the corner from Castillo de la Luna , is Rota’s version of Grand Central Station on a weekend morning. The two restaurants in this square are among our top picks when dining out.

One is La Silla Azul , the best brunch spot in Rota. The other is Ristaurante Italiano Tuscania, a family-run Italian restaurant inside Hostal Sixto. The food is so authentic that this is the go-to restaurant for members of the Italian Navy when they’re in town. Need we say more?

By the way, in case you’re wondering where the Italian family who runs Ristaurante Italiano Tuscania goes when they want good pizza, it’s Made in South . The authentic Neapolitan style pizza is the best in town!

11. Go Shopping at the Flea Market

Known locally as the “Gypsy Market,” this large bazaar takes place every Wednesday from early morning until about 1400. It’s located next to the Rota bus station, a two-minute walk from the main gate of Rota Naval Base.

This market has a little bit of everything, from clothing and shoes to olives, nuts, and caracoles (snails).

12. Enjoy an Upscale Night Out

Nightlife in Rota is fairly informal, but if you have a special occasion, celebrate it in style at El Embarcadero , Whether it’s date night, a birthday, a promotion, or you’re simply celebrating the fact that you’re on vacation, this restaurant in Hotel Duque de Najera fits the bill.

Seafood is their specialty, but the professional staff will help you choose the best dishes for your tastes. Grab a table on their outdoor terrace and enjoy views of the ocean and the pier while you dine!

Another great spot for a special evening is Alma Verde Cafe , our favorite restaurant in Rota. It’s a small operation owned by a Swedish wife and her Italian husband. They create their own unique recipes with locally sourced ingredients, and the results are incredible! The artful decor and soft music make for a cozy, relaxing ambiance, unlike any other restaurant in town.

Make the most of your time in Rota, Spain by taking advantage of the beach, beautiful weather, relaxing vibe, and the many outdoor activities. You will quickly learn why NAVSTA Rota is a favorite duty station and why many military retirees call Rota home!

Rota, an ancient town, stands at the extreme north of the Bay of Cádiz in a privileged position. The town opens out to the Atlantic and behind are two national parks, the Natural Park of the Bay of Cádiz and the Doñana. It is also a town of two extreme contrasts. The old town inside its ramparts has almost a medieval atmosphere. Nearby is a major USA naval base, one of three in Spain established in the 1950's during the Franco era.

Rota is 41 kms from Cádiz, 163 kms from Algeciras, 25 kms from Jerez de la Frontera and 126 kms from Olvera. There is no rail service to the town but it can be reached by express coach and the nearest airport is at Jerez.

Rota is not a major tourist centre but it does boast very fine beaches. In all there are sixteen kilometres of beach. The major beaches are the Playa de la Costilla, Rompidillo, Playa de la Ballena and Punta Candor. The Playa de la Costilla, Punta Candor, Rompidillo, Playa de la Ballena and Puntalillo have all been awarded blue flags by the European Union for their high standards of cleanliness and facilities. Also being on the Atlantic coast Rota is a good venue for windsurfers.

Rota is an ideal town to view on foot. Stroll down its wide streets from calle Italia, Garcia López and San Clemente arriving at the Palacio Municipal Castillo de Luna and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Expectación. From there you can visit the harbour Deportivo Pesquero Astaroth and perhaps round off your walk with the fine view of the Bay of Cádiz to be seen from the Mirador or the Balcón de las Almenas.

Walking through the centre of the town you will come across many interesting shops. A visit to the fish market at the harbour of Pesquero Astaroth is a must. Here you'll see the shellfish and fish catches of the day at what is known as the most famous fish market on the Cádiz coast. Gourmets should also be sure to walk through the Plaza de Abastos where are displayed the horticultural, fruit and vegetable produce of the rich farmlands near Rota. Rota is also known for the Rota Naval base which dominates the town and cuts off direct access along the coast from the south.

Rediscovering Rota, Spain: things to do, wines to taste and new restaurant options to try!

Rota is a delightful coastal town in the Southern Spanish province of Cadiz, that we love to visit every so often. Famous amongst Spaniards for its long sandy beaches and gorgeous weather, Rota also has a particularly vibrant food and wine scene . In this article we offer an overview of what to do in Rota to later share  our latest local food and wine discoveries . ¡Vamos!

A church, a wine and a dish from Rota, Spain

What to do in Rota, Spain

Stroll around its impeccable old town and visit its surprising landmarks.

Rota old town is well worth a relaxed walk. Amongst its narrow whitewashed streets and remains of the old city gates, you will find an impressive medieval castle dating from the 13th century (Castillo de Luna) and a majestic main Church (Nuestra señora de la O) dating from the 16th century.

Main castle and main Church in Rota, Southern Spain

These two landmarks are an absolute must in our opinion. This is not only because of their beauty and historical interest but also because of the authenticity that surrounds them.

Local homes, casual bars, a relaxed local ambiance and a general lack of tourist tack add an extra charm to the oldest sections of Rota.

Visit the local market for a glimpse of everyday life

Rota is popular for its agriculture and fishing. Fruits, vegetables and fish from Rota are of excellent quality. One can see evidence of this in the local food market, where there are many stalls with fabulous local produce on display.

Also, the main food market in Rota has a few local bars serving coffee, food and drinks. This is where we recommend to start a food and wine journey of the town . Let’s begin with some local wines!

Taste the new wines from Rota by Bodegas el Gato

On this last visit to Rota, we had the pleasure to taste the newest range of wines by local winery Bodegas El Gato . The name of this new range is Tehigo and it features two white wines (one dry, one semisweet) and one red.

Bodegas el Gato started in 1957 and has specialised since in fortified wines . However, the 4th generation of wine-makers in the family, led by Laura López and Ana Navarro (cousins), pushed the idea of launching a new range of non-fortified wines.

the two female managers of bodegas el gato

Ana Navarro (left) and Laura López (right). Winemaker and manager of Bodegas el Gato in Rota

This new approach to wine making is also present on the labels of these new wines, which feature a modern illustration of a cat (gato in Spanish) designed by the local painter Carlos García Román .

Wine labels with a cat on it

Tehigo dry white wine by Bodegas el Gato

This is a 100% Palomino white wine fermented at low temperature (15°C). This allows to extract all the aromas and subtleties of this rather stigmatised grape, which was always considered too neutral to make young white wines.

The new winemakers in the province of Cadiz, Southern Spain are now proving how much character the local albariza soil can give to 100% Palomino white wines . We believe that Bodegas el Gato has done a great job with their contribution to this new trend.

Their dry Tehigo white wine has that distinct minerality and salinity that the albariza soil is famous for  as well as some interesting green fruit and floral notes.

Tehigo Semi-sweet white wine by Bodegas el Gato

This is also a 100% Palomino white wine fermented at low temperature (15°C), which keeps a small amount of natural sugar from the grapes .

Two bottles of Tehigo white wine. One dry and one semiweet

Tehigo white wines by Bodegas el Gato. Dry (left) and semisweet (right)

We very much liked the idea of a slightly sweet white wine made with grapes often associated with dry sherries. The result is a very light wine with a slight sweet beginning and a very short and subtle aftertaste.

Tehigo red wine by Bodegas el Gato

This is a 100% Tintilla de Rota red wine, made with the technique of carbonic maceration. The goal of using this technique was to extract all the fruitiness from this grape, which is native to Rota, hence its name.

A bottle of Tehigo Red wine from Rota

Tehigo Red is a young, light and fruity single-vineyard wine. With this wine Bodegas el Gato wants their Tintilla grapes to express all their potential. It has a spicy beginning that later gives way to an explosion of fruitiness that we found well suited to gentle Spring weather and light dishes .

These local wines are ideal to pair with the corresponding local dishes, so further below we give some recommendations on food and wine pairings from Rota.

Where to eat in Rota: local food festivals and recommended local dishes

There are fabulous places to eat as well as frequent food and wine events and festivals all year round in Rota . The most popular of these festivals is “Feria de la Urta” and it takes place every year at the end of June / beginning of July.

Urta is the Spanish term for red-banded sea bream and yes, Rota pays tribute to it not only with a food festival but also with its most popular local recipe . This is “ Urta a la roteña ” (red-banded seabream cooked Rota style).

Seam Bream cooked Rota Style

Urta a la roteña is one of the many dishes that you can try in Restaurante el Embarcadero . This is the restaurant of the 4 star hotel Duque de Nájera . A lovely hotel that is a stone’s throw from the aforementioned landmarks and market, right in front of the Atlantic Ocean .

On our last visit to Rota, Javier Oliván, food and beverage manager of the hotel, invited us, through Pilar and Cristina from the local food blog Aprendiendo a Cocinar , along with other food bloggers, to try the new additions to the menu of Restaurante el Embarcadero.

food bloggers seating around a table at restaurante el embarcadero in Rota

These new dishes are all by resident chef José Miguel Nuño , who graduated from the prestigious hospitality school Taberna del Alarbadero in Seville .

With a strong presence of local produce and organic ingredients , the new highlights of Restaurante el Embarcadero that we got to try are the following:

Homemade foie-gras

As the chef explained to us, this is a special preparation of duck liver cooked at low temperature. They decided to serve it with jelly and accompanied by gingerbread and homemade toasts.

A plate with a portion of homemade foie gras

We found it specially interesting to try the foie-gras with the different types of bread it comes with. We loved the spiciness of the gingerbread and the smoothness of the foie grass. The icing on the cake for this combination of flavours came with the wine pairing that the restaurant chose for this dish. The semi-sweet white wine Tehigo from Bodegas el Gato.

Half cured tuna toast with creamy cheese and tomatoes marinated in olive oil

This was a vey interesting surprise. Cured tuna is very popular in Southern Spain but this half cured tuna was something totally new to us. We loved both its moist texture and delicate flavour.

The creamy goat’s cheese (from local cheese factory El Bucarito) and the tomatoes marinated in extra virgin olive oil went great with the tuna and the crunchy bread. This was a winner of a starter that we paired with Tehigo dry white wine from Bodegas el Gato.

a plate with a toast of half cured on top

Croaker fish ceviche with red onion, citrus zest and tiger’s milk with a touch of oloroso sherry.

The fish and the tiger’s milk came apart at first. Then the chef poured the tiger’s milk onto the thinly sliced raw fish. We enjoyed seeing this preparation and the different bites we took at different times, thus noticing the evolution of the fish flavour and texture in contact with the tiger’s milk . From almost raw and fishy to cured and citrusy. Fun!. We paired this with Tehigo dry white wine too.

A plate of Ceviche at restaurante el Embarcadero in Rota, Spain

Stewed meat gyozas with hummus.

This was another fun and tasty surprise. Stews are common in Spain, specially in the winter months. The ingredients and the way they are cooked gives them a very distinctive flavour that we associate with specific presentations, but definitely not with gyozas.

A plate of gyozas at restaurante el embarcadero in Rota, Spain

Eating gyozas that tasted exactly like a spoonful of a typical Spanish stew was something very original.

Prawns and squid with a free-range egg cooked at low temperature

This was a delicious combo . Fried small prawns and thin squid strips with a crispy texture, topped up with an egg cooked at low temperature. What a delicious combination!

A plate of fried prawns and squid strips with egg at Restaurante el Embarcadero, Rota Spain

It reminded us of fried whitebait with fried eggs, which is a common dish in our regional cuisine. However we have to admit that the flavour of the prawns and of the squid made up for a better version of the dish indeed.

Fresh cannelloni bolognese with red curry, ras el hanout and coconut milk bechamel

We believe a combination of spices and coconut milk is always a safe bet, so we were not expecting anything very new. However we found the bechamel preparation a clever and original way to use the coconut milk .

A plate of cannelloni at restaurante el Embarcadero in Rota, Spain

Then the cannelloni wrap made perfect sense to the dish, which combines different Mediterranean ingredients and one Asian one in a very well balanced fashion. We paired this dish with Petit Forlong, a great red wine from the nearby town of El Puerto de Santa María.

Tintilla wine ice cream and oloroso sherry ice cream with dried fruits sponge cake

We love ice cream and we love wine, so we knew this was going to be a winner of a dessert too and it was! The dish was presented with two scoops of two different wine ice creams. We very much enjoyed the different flavours of both, combining them and mixing them also with the sponge cake.

A plate of ice cream at restaurante el embarcadero in Rota, Spain

We also got to pair this dessert with a glass of sweet tintilla wine from Bodegas el Gato . This was not only fun but also delicious!

The concept behind this dessert was very interesting to us too: different wines from the same region together in a dessert, that was the icing on the cake to a great pairing menu!

Rota never fails to delight us. It is a gem of a town for many reasons. That’s why we love to bring our guests to Rota during our custom tours of Southern Spain.

We are a Southern Spain travel specialist , crafting memorable bespoke journeys of Andalusia and beyond for very small private groups. Our tours have a special focus on food & wine , culture & lifestyle and outdoors & nature.

Playa de La Costilla is one of the most crowded beaches in Rota because it is also one of the cleanest. It also has excellent showers, toilets, changing rooms, and lifeguards.

There are six restaurants and three chiringuitos lining the beach, and it boasts a wheelchair-accessible promenade. The beach is also known for its proximity to the town and offers plenty of tourist accommodation.

Warning: This beach is slightly more exposed than other beaches, so strong waves are expected.

Playa de Peginas

Famous for its popularity amongst divers and wind-surfers, Playa de Peginas is a perfect beach if you are interested in fun activities in Spain. Playa de Peginas also has three beach bars and facilities like parking, toilets, and showers.

Punta Candor

This is a wide beach that spans a length of 1.5 km (1 mile) that you access from across dunes and shrubbery. Punta Candor beach boasts excellent facilities like toilets, showers, changing rooms, and for-hire sun loungers and parasols.

There is also a campsite and picnic area nearby, and it is one of the few beaches that allow dogs. The small winds make the beach perfect for kayaking or sailing. If you stay in or around Rota city center, you can take a bus to Punta Candor beach.

Piedras Gordas

Playa de Piedras Gordas is several kilometers of golden sand encompassed by the Rota Dune System. This is another famous beach as it has a picnic area, a children’s play area and facilities like toilets and changing rooms.

The beach is best accessed through La Almadraba residential area as the roads stretch down the coast.

Rota, Spain: A Must-Visit Destination for History Enthusiasts

' src=

Introduction

Rota, a charming coastal town located in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. Beyond its picturesque beaches and inviting Mediterranean climate, Rota is steeped in rich history and offers a plethora of historical sites and landmarks to explore.

The Naval Station of Rota

One of the main draws for history buffs in Rota is the Naval Station Rota. This strategic military installation has been utilized by the Spanish navy and, since 1953, has hosted the United States Navy. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the base’s historical importance, its role during different conflicts, and its contributions to maritime operations. The Naval Station also has a fascinating military museum that displays artifacts, weapons, and exhibits related to its operations.

The Castillo de Luna

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the town, the Castillo de Luna is a medieval fortress that dates back to the 13th century. Once a residence for Spanish royalty and a defensive structure against enemy invasions, the castle now serves as a cultural center and museum. Exploring its well-preserved walls and courtyards provides visitors with a glimpse into Rota’s past, while the museum offers exhibits on the region’s history, including the town’s Moorish and Roman roots.

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la O

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la O, a stunning example of Andalusian Gothic architecture, is another historical gem in Rota. Constructed in the 16th century, the church features beautiful stained glass windows, intricate stone carvings, and a remarkable altarpiece. Its tranquil interior is a testament to the town’s Christian heritage and offers visitors a serene space for reflection and admiration.

The Baelo Claudia Roman Ruins

A short drive from Rota, history enthusiasts can explore the Baelo Claudia Roman Ruins, a well-preserved ancient Roman city. This archaeological site showcases an extensive array of Roman structures, including a theater, temples, a market, and residential buildings. Visitors can wander among the ruins and envision the thriving civilization that once existed here, gaining insights into Roman life in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Regla

For those interested in religious history, a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Regla is a must. Located in a nearby town, Chipiona, this magnificent Catholic church is steeped in legends and devotion. Aside from its religious significance, the shrine boasts beautiful architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

What is the best time to visit Rota?

The best time to visit Rota is during the spring and fall seasons when the weather is pleasant and the tourist crowds are relatively smaller. Summers can be hot, but the proximity to the coast ensures coastal breezes that provide relief from the heat.

How can I reach Rota?

Rota is easily accessible by air, with the nearest airport being Jerez Airport, located approximately 41 kilometers away. From the airport, you can take a taxi or rent a car to reach Rota. Additionally, Rota is well-connected by train and bus services from various nearby cities.

Are there accommodations available in Rota?

Yes, Rota offers a range of accommodations, including hotels, apartments, and vacation rentals. There are options available for various budgets, ensuring a comfortable stay for every visitor.

What other attractions are there in Rota?

In addition to its historical sites, Rota offers a bustling marina, beautiful beaches, and a lively local culture. Visitors can enjoy water sports, indulge in fresh seafood, and explore the charming streets lined with shops and cafes.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.

Things to see in Rota: long beaches, a lighthouse and plenty of fried fish

Information

Among the many things to see in Rota, the long beaches with their large expanses of golden sand are particular highlights, from Los Galeones to La Ballena . However, Rota also has an attractive historic quarter , whose streets are flanked by white houses with iron balconies and flower pots.

All of this is topped off by a wide choice of culinary offerings in its bars and restaurants, where fried fish is the star dish. As a matter of fact, one of the most rewarding activities you can do in Rota is its tapas route , where the famous urta a la roteña (fish in a tomato and red and green pepper sauce)—one of the most characteristic dishes of Cádiz’s traditional cuisine —is not to be missed.

In addition, there are various natural areas , and the possibility of enjoying a huge range of outdoor sporting activities , with the sea almost always playing a leading role. So as you can see, there’s plenty to see and do in Rota. Below are some of the city’s most interesting attractions.

On the beach in Rota

The beach situated next to the historic quarter and the port is one of the most attractive and popular parts of Rota. The stretch of sand, known as La Costilla , is some 1,300 metres long and 50 metres wide at low tide. The beach is very family-oriented thanks to the gentle surf it generally enjoys.

However, Rota also boasts other urban and natural beaches along its 16-kilometre stretch of Atlantic coast. These are the pick of the bunch:

Novo Resort The Residence Luxury Apartments by Barceló

  • Beachfront location
  • Luxury apartments
  • Facilities and services of a 5-star hotel
  • Some apartments with swimming pool and/or hot tub
  • Punta Candor and Piedras Gordas : These two adjoining beaches total around 2.5 kilometres in length and are bordered by a strip of pine trees and sand dunes, which you can cross via some pretty wooden walkways. They also boast a beach bar, Buda Candor , from whose deck chairs you can enjoy spectacular sunsets.
  • Peginas : Situated next to the previous beaches, if swimming’s what you want to do, it’s a good idea to come at high tide to avoid the rocky depths of Los Corrales , a feature we’ll describe below. It’s for this reason that the beach is frequented by nudists.
  • El Rompidillo and El Chorrillo : Rota’s other two urban beaches are situated between the port docks and the naval base . They are perhaps not the most spectacular beaches in town, but to make up for it there’s an extensive selection of bars and restaurants in the area.
  • Playa de la Ballena : Next to this beach is a residential complex with luxury hotels and chalets. In total, it boasts more than 4.5 kilometres of fine, golden sand with nothing else on the horizon except the Atlantic Ocean . It’s a good idea to pay attention to the beach safety flags (green, yellow and red), since the surf and currents can be quite strong at times.

Things to see and do in Rota: an essential destination for tourists

There are many things to see in Rota in terms of monuments, culture and nature. Here are the main things to look out for:

  • Rota Lighthouse : In spite of its relatively young age (it was opened in 1980), the lighthouse is one of the most striking buildings to see in Rota. Located between Costilla beach and the city port, it reaches 27 metres in height and its light can be made out more than 16 miles (26 kilometres) away.
  • La Luna Castle : Built in the thirteenth century by order of Guzmán el Bueno , once it had outlived its defensive function it was converted into the residence of the Ponce de León . It is known that the Catholic Monarchs stayed here during a visit to the local area and its image appears on the city’s coat of arms.
  • Church of Nuestra Señora de la O : This church was built in the sixteenth century in a Gothic-Renaissance style, however, over the course of time, side chapels built in a Baroque style were added to it. It is situated in the historic quarter of the city.
  • Los Corrales : Found on Pegina beach, these are indeed ‘corrals’ marked out by walls of stone on the sand itself, built in Roman times. When the tide goes out the fish remain trapped inside the walls. They were declared a Natural Monument, even though they’re currently in a state of disuse.
  • Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden: Set across five hectares, these gardens boast rich botanical diversity, as you would expect. However, a lot of people also come to see its population of chameleons, which are, incidentally, animals that also exist in large numbers in other natural spaces in Rota.

Restaurants where to eat well in Rota

Other must-visit places in Rota include its seafront restaurants, although it also boasts establishments lacking such views that nonetheless offer outstanding cuisine.

  • Arrozante Restaurant (Barceló Costa Ballena Golf & Spa, Avenida Reina Sofía): No need to head to Valencia to enjoy one of Spain’s more iconic dishes – paella . Spearheaded by the culinary masters Carlos Otaola and José Luis Chaparro , this lovely restaurant breaks away from traditional Cadiz cuisine and concocts succulent paellas and other traditional rice dishes that will give you an authentic taste of the Mediterranean.
  • La Gaviota (Avenida de la Diputación, no number): Housed within the hotel Playa de la Luz, alongside the main stretch of sand on Rota’s urban coast, most diners come here to sample its fish and seafood rice dishes. Its extensive menu also provides options for both vegetable and meat lovers.
  • El Embarcadero (Gravina, 2): This is one of the best restaurants with views of the sea, in this case Rota port. Its rice dishes come highly recommended, as does its pasta and vegetarian dishes.
  • The Blue Marlin (Avenida de Rota, Torrenueva housing development, Local 1): In spite of its name (undoubtedly a nod to all the Americans who live and work in the Rota naval base), the menu here is typically local and features seafood and fish dishes, naturally.

Information of interest

How to arrive.

  • By car: Rota is 43 kilometres by road from Cádiz. You can get there via the CA-35, the A-4 and the A-491 in around 40 minutes.
  • By coach : Routes M-060, M-061 and M-062, which all leave from the Cádiz interchange station (next to the Renfe train station), connect both cities within roughly an hour.
  • By catamaran: Line B-065 gets you to Rota from the maritime terminal of Cádiz, crossing the bay in 35 minutes or so.

10 fun day trips from Rota, Spain to include in your trip

May 8, 2023 | Posted in: Spain

Quite a few years ago, I spent a holiday in Rota in the province of Andalucia in Spain . While the town itself was rather small and there weren't that any things to do in Rota, it did make for a great base. Here are tips for 10 day trips from Rota.

4. Gibraltar

5. sierra de grazalema natural park, 6. jerez de la frontera, 9. fuengirola, 10. marbella, don't forget travel insurance, 10 fun day trips from rota spain.

day trips from rota spain

If you’ve only got one day, however, you’ll need to prioritize. Sevilla is the capital city of Andalucia, and there is so much to see.

Fans of architecture generally love Sevilla. There are some amazing examples of Mudéjar architecture (buildings influenced by the mixing of European and North African styles) including the stunning Alcazar, the king’s royal palace.

Sevilla is also brimming with Gothic buildings, such as the spectacular Catedral de Sevilla (Europe’s 3rd largest cathedral, and the largest Gothic church in the world!), beside the Alcazar. The Sevilla belltower is called the Giralda and it’s a pretty amazing blend of Muslim and Renaissance architecture, right next to the Gothic cathedral. It’s the former minaret for the mosque that used to be stationed where the cathedral is.

As well as sight-seeing though, it’s a good idea to make time to meander through Sevilla’s narrow winding streets. Walk past artisanal shops, gushing fountains and extravagant plazas, all buzzing with life.

The Triana district has stunning hand-painted ceramics, the old town area of Barrio Santa Cruz is home to the medieval Jewish quarter, and Macarena (the neighborhood, not the extremely catchy song!) has some fantastic markets.

Cádiz

The sea is such an important part of life here, as it surrounds the city almost entirely. The seafood is to die for, with thriving fish markets, and the beaches are beautiful. Playa de la Caleta in the old town is a great spot to see the sunset from, but there are over 76 beaches in total so plenty to choose from if this one is overcrowded!

One of the best things about Cádiz is its relaxing, free and easy-going atmosphere. The pace of life here is calm and un-rushed, the residents being mostly liberal and tolerant. Every spring, the entire city throws an enormous party with the Carnaval de Cádiz. Costumes, music, face-paint, theatre and political commentary make this one of the most exciting festivals in Spain.

cities near rota spain

Spanning both sides of the mountain gorge is the famous Puente Nuevo, the ‘new bridge’, built about 200 years ago. This is Ronda’s main feature and an impressive sight. A fun walk takes you down through the lush green valley to the river Guadalevín, where nature-lovers may spot lesser kestrels, crag martins and endemic Spanish fir trees.

The town’s main export (which may not go down quite as well with the nature-lovers) is bull-fighting, which was basically invented here at the end of the 18th century. You can explore the world-famous bullfighting museum and bullring, which is still used today.

Located on the southern coast of Spain, Gibraltar is a small peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean. It’s a totally one-off place, with a unique cocktail of cultures that can be found nowhere else on the planet.

It’s not a part of Spain, but a British overseas territory – a visit to Gibraltar can feel like a trip to a seaside resort in the south of England, with its red telephone boxes and fish and chips. Or it would do, if it weren’t for its sweltering heat, Palladian architecture and wild Barbary macaques!

One of the most recognizable features of the landscape is the immense and overbearing Rock of Gibraltar that looms over the town at its base, and there’s a helpful lift to get you to the top. You can also take a tour of the rock or go dolphin watching in Gibraltar.

The people here speak both Spanish and English, and often swap languages mid-sentence!

Traveling here from Rota takes about 1 hour 40 by road, and of course, you’ll need your passport to leave the country and British currency.

Sierra de Grazalema

You won’t find it teeming with tourists – in fact, the reserve is a total hidden gem. What you will find are tree-topped peaks, lush mountain streams, oak forests, dramatic gorges, and charming, authentic villages. And vultures.

There’s the deep Garganta Verde canyon with its network of cave complexes, including one cave with the largest bat population in Spain! The small village of Zahara is another must-see for its magical white buildings nestled on the side of the mountain, overlooking a stunning man-made lake.

It’s a wonderful park to visit if you’re planning a break in your itinerary from the town experience, and one of the best places for outdoor pursuits, from canyoning, hiking, kayaking to mountain biking and caving.

day trips rota

Sherry translates literally as ‘jerez’ in Spanish. It’s a fortified wine made from grapes that grow near the city, and you can book informative sherry tours at any of the many bodegas (wineries) which have brilliant reviews. These don’t tend to run in August however when the industry mostly closes down for a month.

This city is home to a particular breed of Spanish horses, and you can see these at shows at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. For motorcycling enthusiasts, there’s also an annual motorcycle Grand Prix at the world-famous Circuito de Jerez, where off-season Formula One races are also held.

córdoba

It was once the largest city of Roman Spain, and the center of the western Islamic empire so it is bursting with history and unique architecture. Its crown jewel is an extraordinary building called La Mezquita, which is now one of Spain’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It also features hundreds of ‘arcos’ (arches) and these arcos are supported by columns of jasper, marble, onyx and granite.

Originally a huge mosque built over 1000 years ago, the building is now the city’s cathedral although Muslims have been lobbying the church to allow them to pray there for years. It is an impressive sight and alone is worth the trip to Córdoba.

tarifa

Tarifa’s beaches are world-class. The fact it sits at the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean means the coast has a one-off quality here. It’s a great spot for water sports with high surf, and the huge expanse of white sand is simply dreamy. You also could see dolphins, orcas and sometimes even sperm whales.

For a bit of history, check out the village of Bolonia which you can find nearby, where the Roman ruins of the 2000-year-old Baelo Claudia site stand testament to the region’s fascinating past.

fuengirola

A huge amount of recent development makes this town a fairly crowded tourist destination, and it’s hard to imagine that it used to be a humble fishing village. Today, visitors are pulled in by its seven kilometers (five miles) of sandy beach, great shopping facilities, good local food, and popular bars.

It has an interesting past, and one relic of this is the 10th century Sohail Castle. In ancient times, the town of Fuengirola was known as Suel, which later changed to Suhayl, hence the name of the castle. Today, you can see and visit the castle, which also hosts music concerts and performances.

marbella

However, as well as the sand, sea and nightlife, Marbella is a beautiful network of white lanes decked out with blooming flower-boxes, and has a hidden side that is well worth exploring. With the picturesque Sierra Blanca mountains as a backdrop, it is simply beautiful, especially out of season.

Marbella’s ancient walled historic town districts are almost exactly the same as they would have been back in the 16th century. A great area to wander through Castilian Renaissance plazas and past buildings with beautiful facades and fresco murals.

If you do want to embrace Marbella’s inner chic, make sure you get to the Golden Mile (although it’s actually four miles in total!). Here you can enjoy luxurious villas, five-star hotels, top restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.

Plan for the best, prepare for the worst. Travel insurance has you covered in case (part of) your trip gets canceled, you get sick or hurt abroad, and sometimes even when your electronics break or get stolen. I always make sure I'm covered every trip I go on.

Don't have travel insurance yet? Check out SafetyWing. They offer super flexible plans that you can even sign up for while you're already on your trip. On top of that, they were the first travel insurance to cover COVID, and when I got COVID, they reimbursed all of my expenses without making a fuss. Their customer support team is great and I can personally recommend them.

I would consider staying in Rota, Sofie, but Seville makes for a great sleepover too. Really enjoyed my time there recently. Wrote about it here:

It looks like a great town to visit, cute lizard shot!

It is, and thanks! We saw lizards there all the time and as you can see they even managed to sneak in through a little crack in the door:-)

Jessica of HolaYessica says

I lived in Sevilla for a while and visited some of the quiet towns around it (but not Rota specifically). I’m much more a city girl, so I’m not sure I’d stay in a small town, although they are lovely to visit. If you didn’t stay in Sevilla long enough to eat some of its amazing tapas, you definitely have to go back to see more. The food is so good (and so cheap!) there.

In definitely need to go back to Sevilla. I feel like I haven’t experienced it as I should’ve. Might be something for a Spanish road trip.

Escape Hunter says

I’ve seen Sevilla and Cadiz from the air. Would love to return and thoroughly visit them and photograph the attractions.

I’d love to go back some time as well to take the time for both places.

Castillo de Luna

Castillo de Luna

Located in Rota , the Luna castle dates from the 13th century and was built under control of " Guzmán the Good " upon a fortified convent of ribat or Muslim origin, in the 11th century. It is rectangular with five crenelated towers, and its interior is structured around a central courtyard.

Property of the Dukes of Arcos, the Ponce de León used the castle as a residence and there is evidence that the Catholic Monarchs visited the city and stayed there.

The Luna Castle is a symbol in itself for citizens of Rota , Cadiz , and proof of this is its presence on the coat of arms of the village. It has housed a hospital and a school, and is currently the location of the City Hall of Rota.
