Enjoy a thrilling 3 days Masai Mara Safari tour starting and ending in Nairobi and using quality mid range safari lodges or tented camps, typically located inside or close to the main Maasai Mara National reserve. 2 Nights Masai Mara

Day 01: Start of your Safari from Nairobi

Your Driver-Guide reports to your hotel for start of the safari to Masai Mara with a 7.30am to 8am departure for a picturesque drive descending the Great Rift Valley and onwards to Maasai Mara, Kenya's famous game reserve. ( Drive time 5.5 hours). You will be in a private safari vehicle. Stop for some time at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint on the way, to enjoy the amazing views of the largest Valley in the world, said to be visible from outer space. Arrive at Masai Mara for lunch at your lodge or camp. The afternoon game drive at 3.30pm allows spotting of the magnificent wildlife in the park ranging from the Big Cats such as Lion, Leopard & Cheetah to Rhino, Elephant and Wildebeest. Return to your lodge by 6.30pm. Dinner and overnight at Keekorok Lodge [ Option of Sarova Mara Camp, Basecamp or Masai Mara Sopa Lodge or similar, in case of unavailability ].

Day 02: Enjoy Full day in Masai Mara

You will be taken on two safari game drives today, one in the morning from 6.15am to 9am, followed by breakfast and the other in the late afternoon after lunch from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. The wildlife is usually more active during these times of the day. As your Masai Mara safari is private, your gamedrive timings will be flexible, useful if you are travelling with children, or are on a honeymoon. You may also choose to have a full day game drive [ one for the whole day] with a packed picnic lunch at no extra cost. Return in the evening for dinner and overnight at the lodge. Dinner and overnight at Keekorok Lodge [ Option of Sarova Mara Camp, Basecamp or Masai Mara Sopa Lodge or similar, in case of unavailability ].

Day 03: Return to Nairobi

After a relaxed breakfast and check-out. Depart for return road transfer back to Nairobi with a shortened morning game drive en-route. Arrive Nairobi by early afternoon [typically by 2.30pm]. Drop off at your hotel or free onward transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Is a 3 day safari in masai mara sufficient.

3 days is plenty to see, hear and experience the incredible wildlife and sights of Masai Mara.  The number of days needed to properly do a Masai Mara safari can range from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on how much time and budget a visitor has. 

A longer period of time would be better, however each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. On a 3 day trip you can even break up the drive to or from the Masai Mara with an overnight stay in Lake Nakuru National Park or Lake Naivasha , with the option to visit nearby Hell’s Gate National Park . 

Alternatively you can spend all of your time in Masai Mara . With full days at the reserve, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore this iconic safari destination including a full-day dusk-to-dawn game drive that will include lunch at one of the picnic spots. 

Morning and evening game drives are rewarding as well, but on a full day you can get further into the reserve, away from the more-crowded areas. Overall, 3 days is a good amount of time for a safari in the Masai Mara if it is part of a larger Kenya tour, but if not, allocating a few more days to your safari would be ideal if possible.

Animals on a Masai Mara safari?

The reserve is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and has the highest concentration of Big Cats not just in East Africa but worldwide making the location a perfect research center for hyenas and Big Cats. 

World famous for hosting the epic Great Migration, the Masai Mara welcomes 1.5 million wildebeests onto its sprawling savannahs each July through October. Other wildlife that visitors can expect to find include abundant elephants, buffalo, giraffes, lions and cheetah alongside the migratory animals and zebra. 

With over 450 animal species, visitors can also have a clear view of animals catching them in action when on a hot-air balloon African safari early in the morning. Leopards are frequently encountered, endangered black rhino hide in the dense thickets and large rafts of hippo and enormous crocodiles are found in the Mara River crossings. 

Best time to go on a 3 day Masai Mara safari?

To avoid crowds, the low-season months of April to May and November to December see fewer visitors than the rest of the year. While this isn’t the best time for wildlife viewing, there are always animals around. April and May are the wettest months, but you’ll be rewarded with spectacular scenery and an abundance of baby animals. 

Midsummer can get busy though, so come at the beginning or end of that period with its full on wildlife without crazy crowds. Even during the high season, some areas of the Mara are busier than others, but for a really exclusive safari experience you can book into one of the private conservancies bordering the Masai Mara.

Fly or drive to Masai Mara?

On a 3 day safari, flying and driving to the Masai Mara are both viable options, with flying bringing obvious time savings (50 minutes from Nairobi) and incredible views of the wildlife and landscape. Flying also comes with a higher price tag. The drive to the Mara takes almost 6 hours, with the last 100km/62mi of the road quite poor. Fly-in safaris usually include top-end accommodation and all your activities. 

On a 3 day tour of the Mara, you can easily break up the drive with a stopover. Lake Nakuru NP is the most popular option. This Rift Valley lake teems with birdlife, and this is the best place in Kenya to see rhinos, which are very difficult to spot in the Masai Mara, as well as the hustle and bustle of African countryside life.  

Another great option is to spend a night at Hell’s Gate NP. The dramatic scenery is the main attraction and, as there are few dangerous animals, cycling and hiking are permitted in the park.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

5:00 am.  Your driver/guide will pick you up at your hotel or the location of your choice. Hop into your private 4 x 4 Safari Jeep and we’ll head for the park, passing the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Along our route, we’ll enjoy a breakfast stop and collect our packed lunches for the day.

We’ll be heading into Masai country and you may spot herdsmen wrapped in their colorful shukas, as we near the reserve.

We should get to the park in the mid-morning and proceed for a an extended game viewing drive until early evening when you check into your accommodation.

Your driver/guide will share his knowledge of this beautiful land and the variety of wildlife you’re sure to encounter.

Welcome to safari time – we’ll get up early to view the first golden light and the stirrings of the park’s wildlife. Today, we’ll enjoy maximum viewing with unlimited game drives across the vast savannahs.

We’ll be tracking the big cats along with elephants, giraffes, buffalos, and the other 95 mammals found in this world-famous park.

If you’re here during the  Great Migration  (July – October), you’ll encounter the most fantastic movement of animals on our planet. Thousands of zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest cross into the park over the Mara River on their timeless parade searching for taller grasses to consume.

The river is also home to pods of hippos and waiting crocodiles, eyeing the vast herds crossing into their territory.

If you would like to add a cultural aspect to your Masai Mara safari, tell your driver/guide to arrange a visit with the Maasai in their local village. This optional experience will allow you to learn about these native people and see their homes up close.

For the most unique safari experience in the world, sign up for the optional early morning  hot air balloon ride  over the Mara. Watch the rising sun break over the park, lighting up the fields and the wildlife below. Your driver/guide can make all the arrangements.

Here is the detailed 3-day Masai Mara National Reserve safari itinerary. It is what you can expect from the moment you land at JKIA, to the time you arrive in the Maasai Mara National Reserve to the time you get back to Nairobi.

Day 1 of 3 Days Masai Mara Safari: Pickup from JKIA, Transfer to Mara, & Afternoon Game Drive 

Your guide will be at the airport an hour before your flight arrival time, just so you can rest assured there is someone waiting for you at the start of your safari from Nairobi to Masai Mara National Park. You will quickly identify him, thanks to his signature warm smile and placard being your name in bold letters.

The vision is to have you land in Nairobi by 5:30 A.M, after which we indulge you in some tasty chai (Kenyan Tea) or Kahawa (Kenyan Coffee. It is at 8:00 am when you board our luxurious 4×4 safari Landcruiser for this 6-hour drive safari from Nairobi to the Masai Mara.

That you won’t be bewildered we cannot promise, but we do promise this- you will live to remember the Kenyan countryside. We stop over at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint for the sake of Instagram and a few more times for bathroom, lunch, and snack breaks. It takes about 1.5-hr to get from Nairobi to the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint.

From the Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara in Kenya is about 5-hrs . Ensure you take photos at the Great Rift Valley before the tour guide continues with the drive to Mara game reserve.

We estimate your arrival time to be around noon, giving you more than enough time to settle into Masai Mara hotel of choice. We will then leave you to have lunch and sleep for an hour or two before heading out for a game drive at the reserve. Your private Maasai Mara safari guide will pick you up for the afternoon game drive in a safari land cruiser at around 3 pm.

Toast to colorful sunsets from your Land Cruiser, marvel at the nearly endless wildlife, and wrap yourself around each other sharing in the beauty of the Maasai Mara landscape. The gentle kiss of sunset on the Masai Mara open savannahs is a sight you wouldn’t want to miss.

Easy to spot on day 1 of your Masai Mara safari package includes herds of elephants trolling back to their sleeping quarters, a pride of lions, the Maasai Mara migration, buffaloes, and giraffes. You will also spot some of the over 450 bird species that reside in Masai Mara National Reserve.

Later, the tour guide will take you to your chosen camp or lodge, and leave you there for dinner and overnight rest. Some of the top accommodations in the Mara include Mara Sopa Lodge, Mara Maisha Camp, Basecamp Masai Mara, and others.

Day 2 of 3 Days Masai Mara Tour: A Full-Day Game Drive with Packed Lunch

The lavishly orange sunrise, pin-drop silence, and generous wildlife sightings are why morning safaris in the Mara are regarded as the best and most rewarding. At dawn, elephants, zebras, leopards, and cheetahs alike are calmer, fresher, and hard at work in search of replenishment.

The panorama is effortless when our guide takes you through the scenic plains of the Mara to see the reserve. You are introduced to the acacia woodlands, grasslands, marshlands, and swamps that are characteristic of the park, our guide making your amusement his life’s mission.

Other worthwhile attractions in the park include the Big 5 which, most certainly, the park is most known for. The big five you can expect to see during your safari to Maasai Mara include lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards.

Morning is also an excellent time to view Masai Mara Migration if you book your safari between July and Oct. Maasai Mara National Reserve migration is a blood-rushing spectacle that features over 7 million wildebeests, zebras, and other animals.

Bring your courage with you, because the event is a blood bath that is a feat for the fainthearted. Also bring your cameras, for such diversity you only hear about, and watch out for the big five.

When the time for lunch comes, you scamper off to the nearest safe space in the park fully armed with your appetites and Maasai shukas. Lunch is served right at the heart of the reserve, after which you will continue with your game drives in the Mara Game Reserve since you have a full-day game drive.

Other worthy stops during the rest of your game drives include the Oloololo Escarpment, which offers a spectacular bird’s eye view of the park. To admire is the wildlife-swamped watering hole that sits directly below the escarpment. If it’s the migration season, you will head to the Mara River.

The Masai Mara is quieter then, which is a perfect time for the sleeping predators to go on the final hunt. You brood over the views and wildlife for a little while before going back to your camp for dinner and overnight rest. Today you will rest and inform your friends that a full-day Masai Mara safari in the jungle is one of the best experiences you will have in the world.

You will head to the camp in early evening for overnight and dinner or have a bush dinner at around USD 50 per person, depending on the camp you choose.

Day 3 of Masai Mara 3 Days 2 Nights: Morning Game Drives, Visit a Maasai Village, & Transfer to Nairobi 

This is the last day of your 3 days Masai Mara budget safari .  After breakfast, you check out of your camp heading straight to Maasai Mara for the last morning game drive of your Masai Mara travel packages .

Like is the norm, expect nothing short of a blast when it comes to a game drive. If you are lucky, you might get to see a lion or cheetah hunt this morning and make your safari in Masai Mara one of the best in the world.  Our game drive  lasts till 10:00 A.M., after which you head to the Maasai Village for a cultural visit.

Bring your dancing shoes with you because there’s no way you are leaving here before breaking a leg. You will have a great time interacting with the Maasai people at Masai Mara for about 1-hr. To also look forward to during your visit are beautiful handmade Masai beads and paintings, which will serve as the best souvenirs to your African adventure. 

Our visit lasts for one and a half-hour, after which we commence our drive back to Nairobi with a brief stopover in Narok for lunch. The transfer back to Nairobi will be in a safari vehicle and the journey takes about 6-hr.

You will be in Nairobi by 5 pm and the safari guide will transfer you to JKIA for your international flight. The guide will say goodbye, and you will be sure it was a great trip.

This is a 3 days Masai Mara safari   from Mombasa or Diani beach depending on where you are staying. Pick up is right from your beach hotel in Diani Beach or Mombasa’s North Coast, or even from your city hotel in the island of Mombasa.

In case you are staying at Diani, Tiwi Beach or Chale Island, we can always include the flight from Ukunda (Diani) to Masai Mara. It is basically a 3 days Masai Mara fly in Safari from Mombasa or you may also start from Diani beach.  We also arrange this tour starting from watamu Beach or Malindi Beach. 

Masai Mara is served by several airstrips within the game reserve and surrounding private conservancies. The Airstrip that you will fly into will depend on which lodge / or camp that you will be staying in. One of our able Mombasa safari experts will guide you accordingly.

3 Days Masai Mara safari from Diani or Mombasa, What to see?

The Masai Mara National Reserve offers a safari experience like no other. You expect to encounter countless animals and with some little luck you may spot all the safari Big Five namely; Elephant, Lion, Rhinos, Leopard and Buffalo. Masai Mara is also famous for large cats and you expect to see other cats like Cheetahs (fastest animals on earth) and you are lucky, you may witness the spectacular hunts by these beasts.

What comes to mind on the mention of Masai Mara is the wildebeests migration also known as the Great Migration , which has been recognised as one of the seven wonders of the world.

The best wildlife spectacle on earth, The Great Migration sees more than a million and a half herds of wildebeests accompanied by thousands of Zebras and Thompson gazelles roam the wilderness covering thousands of kilometers from Southern Serengeti in Tanzania and ultimately covering the crocodile infested waters of Mara River.

Full day safari in Masai Mara Game Reserve

Early morning safari game drives at sunrise if you wish. You will then be back for breakfast and leave with a packed lunch for more safari game drives in the plains of Masai Mara in search of the Big Five and wildebeest migration herds depending on the month that you travel. In Masai mara you expect to spot many animals including; elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, topis, warthogs, leopards, Cheetahs and many more. Apart from wildlife safaris on a safari van or jeep, you may also take optional activities available in Masai Mara. You can visit local Masai villages, go on a walking safari in the Masai mara, go on a hot air balloon safari at dawn or other extras that are available at the lodges and camps. All optional activities are at an extra cost.

Later in the afternoon you will retire back to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight. Overnight at Zebra Plains Tented Camp . All meals included.

Fly from Masai Mara back to Mombasa or Diani Beach

Breakfast at your lodge or camp this morning, then you will bid farewell to the lodge / camp staff and depart to the airstrip with your last safari game drive on the way to the airstrip. Take a mid-morning flight back to Mombasa or Ukunda in Diani Beach depending on your travel plans.  Pick up from the airport in Ukunda or Mombasa, and transfer back to your

As newbie safari travellers, we were blown away by our experience of the Conservatory - the animals in abundance; the landscapes; the people; the smells and sounds.

It was an amazing experience to actually see the river crossings, that we had seen so many times on TV during the wildebeest migration.

We saw a leopard on a tree and we were lucky enough to watch four lionesses and three cubs eating a fresh hunt. In the evening safari we were able to explore a massive variety of hippopotamus and a crocodile.

There were lion cubs galore, a baby zebra born in front of my eyes, pretty much everything an avid photographer could hope for.

The Maasai people were extremely welcoming, and were there to make sure our experience was nothing but the best. We will definitely be back.

Wonderful area for wildlife viewing. Having been there twice both times were awesome experiences! Will return again.

The highlight of our trip to Mara was seeing the migration at the Mara river. A once in a lifetime experience to see the Wildebeest migrating. An amazing scene of nature it was.

We saw 8 lions in one drive, and a hippo pod being circled by a dozen crocodiles that launched into the water, trying to get the baby hippos in the center of the pod. Wow!

I was fortunate that when I was recently in the Mara North Conservancy there were so few tourists. I saw plenty of wildlife. The sightings of big cats were especially good.

The Mara Triangle is the most beautiful, lush area of the Masai Mara. Loads of elephants and all types of wildlife without all the land cruiser traffic found in other areas of the Mara.
