13 Best Scenic Train Rides in Colorado You Can’t Miss (2023)

  • By jesse.sumrak

scenic train trips colorado

The  Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Ride  is one of my favorite scenic train rides in Colorado. As a Ouray resident, I’ve had the opportunity to ride this train in various seasons for fun, adventure, and even holiday tradition.

You hop on the train in Durango, and it takes you on a beautiful 3.5-hour ride through the San Juan Mountains to the mining town of Silverton. The train ride features:

  • Rolling hills
  • Views of epic mountains
  • Steep cliffs (close enough to touch…but don’t touch!)
  • Narrows canyons
  • Raging rapids

You’ll have a 2-hour layover in Silverton to explore, shop, and eat before hopping on the train to reverse the route back to Durango. It’s an all-day train adventure that’ll give you some of the best views of the San Juan Mountains from the not-so-cushy seats of a train.

Really, they’re not super-duper comfortable.

You can choose an open-air train car or an enclosed car—during the summer, I highly recommend the open-air option. You get much better views of the surrounding scenery, and there’s a bit more room for kids to walk around and explore.

Other Durango and Silverton Train Rides

Now, that’s just the  traditional  Durango and Silverton train ride experience, but the railroad has a few other options to explore:

  • Cascade Canyon Express:  Condense your journey to just 5 hours (instead of 9+) while still seeing jaw-dropping scenery, geological features, and epic high mountain curves.
  • Cascade Canyon Winter Train:  Take a trip to Cascade Canyon and back in the middle of winter for an unforgettable snow-bound train experience.
  • The Polar Express:  Listen to the story of the Polar Express while dancing chefs serve you hot chocolate. You’ll visit the North Pole, and Santa Claus even makes a surprise appearance on the train to give each child the “first gift of Christmas.”

Backpackers can also use the train in the summer to get prime access to the Chicago Basin hiking area. During warm summer months, entire cars will get off and on at this destination to go experience the remote Weminuche Wilderness and bag some of Colorado’s most epic 14’ers.

2. Georgetown Loop Railroad

Georgetown Loop Railroad

The  Georgetown Loop Railroad  is arguably the best train ride near Denver, Colorado. It’s less than an hour’s drive away from the Mile High City and just a skip off I-70 to park and embark.

You’ll hop on the train for a short 2-mile ride between the historic mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Right from the get-go, the train takes you over a scenic bridge with thrilling vertical drops on both sides. This is the pinnacle of exposure on a bridge, and they help freeze the moment in time by completely stopping in the middle to allow for pictures.

The train takes you over a handful of other bridges as it winds its way across the rocky canyon toward Silver Plume. Once you reach the end of your journey, you have the option to get off and explore some tourist attractions at Lebanon Silver Mine (you’ll pay for that  before  you get on the train). After the train gets sorted out, you’ll ride back to Georgetown to end your locomotive journey.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad is the perfect train ride for families because it’s not too long and not too short. You get just the right amount of time on the train without your kiddos getting bored or antsy—it’s a win-win for everyone.

3. Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride

Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride

The  Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride  takes passengers on a 45-minute trip to see the rich history of the area’s gold mines. You’ll get to ride the 15-ton iron horse steam locomotive and see amazing views of Pikes Peak, Echo Valley, and historic gold mining camps.

It’s a first-come, first-serve train ride, so you’ll need to get in line to earn yourself a spot. All the cars are open, and the train runs rain or shine—so prepare to get a little wet if the weather looks dicey.

The conductor narrates the entire journey, and these people are top-notch. They care about this area’s history, and they’ll share dozens of interesting facts you’ll  actually  want to hear.

4. Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Despite its breathtaking views, the Royal Gorge is still a  Colorado hidden gem  (relatively). Seriously, ask a Colorado local if they’ve been to the Royal Gorge, and you’d be surprised by how few have visited (and how few know about it).

The Royal Gorge Railroad  takes you through the winding gorge and gives you a unique bottom-up view of the tall cliffs, the winding Arkansas River, and the Royal Gorge Bridge (one of the world’s tallest suspension bridges).

Unlike most of the train rides on this list, the Royal Gorge Railroad feels a bit more ritzy. They offer first-class seating and dining, and the train also features themed rides like  Murder Mystery Dinner Train ,  Mother’s Day Train,  and  Royal Afternoon Tea at the Mansion .

5. Colorado Amtrak

Colorado Amtrak

The  California Zephyr train  passes through the heart of Colorado, making a stop in Denver as it makes its way between the end destinations of Chicago and Emeryville, San Francisco. You get a taste of everything the Western United States has to offer on this long train ride:

  • Snow-capped Sierra Nevadas
  • Desert terrain
  • Rocky Mountains
  • Glenwood Canyon
  • Winter Park
  • Moffat Tunnel
  • San Pablo Bay

The train serves over 30 train stations along the journey, but here are the notable stops in Colorado:

  • Fort Morgan, CO (FMG)
  • Denver, CO – Union Station (DEN)
  • Fraser-Winter Park, CO (WIP)
  • Granby, CO (GRA)
  • Glenwood Springs, CO (GSC)
  • Grand Junction, CO (GJT)

This is not a “historical” train ride. You’ll get cushy seats, sleeper cars, dining options, and observation cars for a comfortable traveling experience.

6. Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

The  Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad  takes riders on a 65-mile journey through Toltec Gorge and over the 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass—hence, the name. It’s a 6.5-hour ride with amazing views the entire way, and the train itself is a National Historic Landmark.

The railroad describes itself as the “longest, the highest and most authentic steam railroad in North America.” You cross the state border with New Mexico 11 times as you zigzag through canyons, tunnels, and trestles. Right from the get-go, the train leaves the station and begins a steep 4% climb into the mountains.

You’ll see:

  • Old mining camps
  • 600-foot deep walls of Toltec Gorge
  • 137-foot-tall Cascade Creek Trestle
  • Chama Valley
  • Tanglefoot Curve
  • Rio de los Pinos

7. Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad

Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad

The  Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad  takes you on a 2.5-hour train ride to the Continental Divide with amazing panoramic views of the Arkansas River Valley and Leadville’s colorful mining past.

Along the way, you’ll see Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive (Colorado’s 2 tallest mountains), Freemont Pass, and the thick trees of the San Isabel National Forest. Depending on the time of year, you’ll also see fields of vibrant wildflowers surrounding the train as it meanders through the hills and mountains.

8. Tiny Town and Railroad

Tiny Town and Railroad

Tiny Town and Railroad  is far from a  traditional  scenic Colorado train ride experience, but it’s something your children might appreciate even more. They’ll feel like giants in this children-sized town filled with replica buildings and a miniature train built for them.

It’s a 10-minute train ride that takes you around the unique park, and it’s powered by a real steam engine. The park is actually a decent size, with tons of shade-providing trees and over 100 tiny buildings. Oh, and the train ride is just $2 per ticket. This place is  not  a tourist rip-off—it’s a genuinely good time for kids and train enthusiasts.

9. Rockies to the Red Rocks

Rockies to the Red Rocks

The  Rocky Mountaineer  train takes travelers for a colorful ride through western Colorado’s red rock territory. It stops in Denver, Glenwood Springs, and Moab, UT, as it winds through canyons and happens upon vast desert expanses.

Between Moab and Glenwood Springs, you’ll see incredible views of Mount Garfield and Ruby Canyon. Enjoy the springs for the rest of the evening before getting on the train for Day 2 between Glenwood Springs and Denver. This portion of the train ride crosses the Continental Divide with the 6.3-mile Moffat Tunnel.

10. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway  is the highest cog train in the world, taking riders from Manitou Springs all the way up to the top of Pikes Peak (at 14,115 feet). It’s a 3.5-hour roundtrip ride with magical views of the Rocky Mountains and never-ending views of the plains to the east.

Discover Katharine Lee Bates’s inspiration for writing the song “America the Beautiful.” When she arrived on top of Pikes Peak, she wrote, “All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.”

It’s hard to disagree.

While Pikes Peak is the star of the show, you’ll also get to experience dozens of other sights along your 9-mile trip to the top:

  • Ruxton Creek
  • Englemann Canyon
  • Minnehaha Falls

Want to mix up your adventure? Hike up Pikes Peak and save your knees with a quick trip down on the Cog Railway. Oh, and enjoy a high-altitude doughnut at the summit for top-notch fuel.

11. Ridgway Railroad Museum & Train Ride

Ridgway Railroad Museum & Train Ride

The  Ridgway Railroad Museum  features historic Colorado train equipment, and you can go out and view the cars at any time. However, you’ll need to wait until they’re open to look inside the cars and museum.

Come visit on a Saturday, and you can get a free ride on Motor No. 1 and Goose No. 4 as it rides around the few acres of property. You’ll get stellar views of the Cimarrons and Mt. Sneffels as you make loops around the train yard.

12. Winter Park Express Ski Train

Winter Park Express Ski Train

The  Winter Park Express Ski Train  operates in partnership with Amtrak to take ski enthusiasts from Downtown Denver to the high-altitude slopes of Winter Park Resort. You can ride the train from mid-January to the end of March during peak ski season to avoid I-70 traffic and enjoy the no-stress adventure of train rides and skiing.

You could even take plane to train by flying into Denver International Airport and taking the A-Line to Union Station in Downtown Denver. It’s an expensive route to get to Winter Park, but the nature of public traveling feels almost European (almost).

13. Southwest Chief

The  Southwest Chief  is another Amtrak line that connects Chicago and Los Angeles with a few stops in Colorado’s southwest region:

  • Lamar, CO (LMR)
  • La Junta, CO (LAJ)
  • Trinidad, CO (TRI)

These are seldom-visited Colorado towns with lots of natural beauty and adventure to offer. Visit Trinidad Lake for top-notch camping, hiking, boating, and fishing, or go on an epic hike up the Spanish Peaks.

14. [Bonus – Closed] Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad takes travelers on a beautiful route from Alamosa to La Veta in Southern Colorado. The steam and diesel trains provide amazing views of the San Luis Valley and a handful of crossings through historic train towns.

Unfortunately, the Rio Grand Scenic Railroad is closed for the time being as owners look for new buyers.

scenic train trips colorado

Next time you think about climbing a mountain, why not relax and let a train do all the work? Scenic railways up and down Colorado whisk travelers over craggy peaks, past sparkling rivers, and through golden aspen groves. From chugging steam trains to modern luxury carriages, these rail lines offer short jaunts and multiday adventures through the Rockies and beyond.

You never know what surprises you might find in the high-altitude wilderness, so keep an eye out for wildlife and pack a sweater in case the snow begins to fly.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Rail transport was essential to Colorado's early mining industry, and in 1882, this line connected the mines of Silverton with the smelters of Durango. Today's train rolls along that same 45-mile stretch of gorgeous scenery beside the Animas River, with vintage steam and diesel locomotives leading a variety of excursions throughout the year. Adventure packages — including zip lining, rafting, and Jeep tours — are available, along with special stops to access the Weminuche Wilderness and San Juan National Forest.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Built in 1880 and relaunched in 1998, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad travels between 1,000-foot rock walls while the Arkansas River rapids churn below. At its narrowest, Royal Gorge pinches down to 30 feet, so a suspended iron railway bridge hugs the north wall. The train runs all year, with historic locomotives and passenger carriages offering a range of 22-mile round-trip excursions from Cañon City's Santa Fe Depot. On board, the 403 Grill serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner made from Colorado-sourced ingredients.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

This historic rail line was established in 1880 to serve silver mines in the San Juan Mountains, and it follows a jagged route that crosses the Colorado-New Mexico border 11 times. Pulled by a steam locomotive, the train runs 64-mile excursions between Antonito, Colorado, and Chama, New Mexico, climbing over 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass, through Toltec Gorge, and along the 137-foot-high Cascade Trestle. Express, half-day, and full-day trips (with lunch) are available, as are special Fourth of July, wildflower, geology, brunch, and dinner trains.

Leadville Railroad

Perched at 10,152 feet above sea level, Leadville is a former mining boom town in a spectacular natural setting. Passengers (and their well-behaved dogs) can board the Leadville Railroad for a 2.5-hour round-trip journey on a rail line dating to 1884. The train chugs toward the Continental Divide, through the San Isabel National Forest and Arkansas River Valley, offering views of Mount Massive and Mount Elbert, Colorado's two tallest mountains, along the way. Wildflower and fall foliage trains are dazzling, and other excursions include barbecue, zip line, and rafting packages.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Fresh from a three-year, $100 million renovation, the world's highest cog railroad (and the country's highest railroad) welcomes travelers on a nine-mile climb from Manitou Springs to the top of Pikes Peak. The cog railway has been running since 1891, and the scenery is still awe-inspiring. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, elk, and yellow-bellied marmots on your way to the new, LEED Silver-certified Summit Visitor Center, situated at 14,115 feet above sea level. This is the place to taste Pikes Peak's famously fluffy high-altitude donuts.

Georgetown Loop Railroad

Completed in 1884 and rebuilt in time for its 1984 centenary, the Georgetown Loop Railroad takes travelers on a 4.5-mile round-trip ride between the historic mountain towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Pulled by vintage steam and diesel electric locomotives, the trains rumble over four bridges, around hairpin turns, and through the forest, with Clear Creek splashing below. Excursions can also be combined with a tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine, where you can try your luck at gold panning.

Rocky Mountaineer

Named the World's Leading Luxury Train at the 2021 World Travel Awards, the Rocky Mountaineer built its stellar reputation in Canada. Now, it's come stateside, with a two-day Rockies to the Red Rocks itinerary linking Denver and Moab, including an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs. The train's glass-dome coaches offer a smooth ride — through the Moffat Tunnel, past Winter Park's ski lifts, and along the banks of the Colorado River as it flows through ranchland, wine country, and into the red canyon wilderness.

8. Colorado Amtrak

Amtrak Rail Raton Pass Colorado

While the Colorado Amtrak lines are not necessarily historic or strictly for tourism, they are both scenic and fun ways to get from point A to B. They offer less stress than bustling airports and more comfort than taking a road trip in the car. There are 2 main lines that make their way through the state:

California Zephyr – for a high-speed tour through the Rockies, the California Zephyr offers six different stops in Colorado on its route between Chicago and San Francisco. The most popular place to board the train is in Downtown Denver at Union Station . Other Colorado stops include:

  • Grand Junction
  • Glenwood Springs
  • Fort Morgan

Board the Rocky Mountaineer for a luxury train experience from Denver to Moab, UT. The stunning scenery will start with alpine forests and towering canyons before transforming into the unique red rocks of the Moab desert in Utah.

Starting in Denver, you’ll travel along the Colorado River while you enjoy a fresh breakfast and then a three-course lunch. There will be plenty of chances to spot wildlife as you move through different canyons on your way to an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs.

Continue on the train after a good night of rest through Ruby Canyon, which is only accessible by train or river. You’ll then cross the state line into Utah, where you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful Arches National Park. Depart in Moab and explore as you please! This is a great way to slowly explore two breathtaking regions.

Start and endpoints: Denver, CO, and Moab, UT

10. Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Red train on train tracks in an alpine forest

Recently reopened after extensive renovations, the mile-high Pikes Peak Cog Railway chugs 9 miles up the ever-famous Pikes Peak to a summit of 14,115 feet. CLOSED | Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

image of Rio Grande scenic railroad

As of 2019, this railroad has been closed while it searches for new ownership. Updates will be posted if they reopen in the future, but for now, you’ll have to check out a different rail line.

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad chugs along some of Colorado’s most beautiful scenery in the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountain ranges. First completed in 1878, this railroad was a major supplier of ore, lumber, cattle, and sheep to the developing area. Today its passengers can choose from themed rides like the Fall Colors Explorer Train, Wine Train Colorado, or even the Paint ‘N’ Sip Wine Train.

Perhaps one of the more unique aspects of the Rio Grande railroad is the accessibility to Mountain Rails Live. Join world-class musicians and ride together to Fir Summit – a concert venue only accessible by train.

Start and endpoints: Le Veta / Alamosa / Fort Garland

Each of these rides’ schedules varies by season, so it is always best to check their websites for the most current schedule. Safe travels!

History of Railways in Colorado

The history of railways in Colorado is like a story of how trains helped Colorado grow and change. Back in the 1800s, when people discovered gold in Colorado, they needed a way to move lots of things like gold, people, and equipment. That’s when they started building railways – tracks for trains – all across the state.

One really important railway was the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. This railway was a big deal because it built tracks even in the mountains, making it easier to connect towns and move stuff around, especially mining materials.

These railways weren’t just about moving things. They helped Colorado become richer by transporting valuable things like gold, silver, and agricultural products like cattle and wheat. This made towns like Leadville, Cripple Creek, and Aspen grow and become prosperous.

The railways also connected Colorado to the rest of the United States through a big network of train tracks. This meant that people and goods could easily move between Colorado and other states.

The railways changed more than just the economy. They also affected how people lived and the places they lived in. As more tracks were laid, towns and cities popped up along these routes. This brought people from different places, making Colorado a diverse and vibrant state.

Colorado Scenic Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

logoad1.jpg

Last revised: December 14, 2023

By:  Adam Burns

The information provided below offers a look at all the Colorado scenic train rides and railroad museums available throughout the Centennial State.

But first, a brief history.  Arguably no other place in America boasted such a fascinating collection of railroads as Colorado.

Its history with the iron horse coincided with the Transcontinental Railroad's development although its first train did not appear until after that project's completion.

When the great "Silver Boom" began in 1879, following the precious metal's discovery near Leadville, railroading took flight.

Due to the rugged topography many lines were built to the 3-foot right-of-way as a means of reducing construction costs.

For this reason, Colorado would proclaim the densest network of "narrow-gauge" railroads in the country.

Some of the more notable include the Denver, South Park & Pacific; Denver & Rio Grande (later the Denver & Rio Grande Western, it originally had no connection to the mining boom); Rio Grand Southern; Colorado Central; and Uintah Railway.

In many cases, engineers had to devise ingenious ways of carving routes out of the Rocky Mountains, resulting in several spectacular locations such as the Hanging Bridge within the Royal Gorge, Colorado Central's Georgetown Loop, and the 6.21-mile Moffat Tunnel.

Several of these live on today as tourist attractions with names like the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge (D&SNG); Cumbres & Toltec Scenic (C&TS); Royal Gorge Route; Georgetown Loop; and others.

State Rail History

The state's involvement with the railroad began just after its 1859 gold rush although trains had nothing to do with this endeavor.  Instead, it was all related to the Transcontinental Railroad.

The Union Pacific, formally organized in May, 1863, was heading west from Omaha, Nebraska (where it held its groundbreaking ceremonies on December 1, 1863) with intentions of joining the Central Pacific (building east from Sacramento, California) somewhere near the Sierra-Nevada Mountains.

After serious consideration officials opted against building through the fledgling community of Denver, Colorado Territory (Colorado achieved statehood on August 1, 1876).  Instead, the line would turn north through southern Wyoming.

According to an in-depth analysis  Trains Magazine  published in its January, 2007 issue entitled, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," Denver's jilted businessmen felt compelled to right this wrong by building their own railroad to meet Union Pacific's westward advance.

As the book, " All Hail The Denver Pacific: Denver's First Railroad " by author Thomas Noel points out, what was known as the Denver Pacific Railway & Telegraph Company was formally incorporated on November 19, 1867.

Construction began south from the small outpost of Cheyenne in 1869 and reached Evans, Colorado on January 1, 1870.  After less than a year of construction the line was completed to Denver (106 miles) on June 26th that same year.

On January 24, 1880 the Denver Pacific merged with the Union Pacific Railway and Kansas Pacific (linking Kansas City with Denver) to form the Union Pacific Railway.

Narrow-gauge railroads first appeared in the state when William Palmer chartered the Denver & Rio Grande Railway on October 27, 1870 to link Denver with El Paso, Texas running along the Front Range in an effort to establish through service into Mexico.

He also envisioned a secondary main line reaching the Central Pacific at Salt Lake City/Ogden.  Finally, with the growing mining industry branches would infiltrate northwestern New Mexico and southwestern Colorado.

The D&RG was America's first railroad to successfully pioneer the 3-foot, narrow-gauge concept.  After Palmer went to war with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe for access over New Mexico's Raton Pass, tycoon Jay Gould acquired the D&RG.

His efforts abandoned the route towards Texas and instead, sought a western main line to Salt Lake City.

This undertaking was eventually realized.  In time, the company became known as the Denver & Rio Grand Western  which eventually upgraded most routes to the standard-gauge of 4 feet, 8 1/2 inches.

In time, the D&RGW proved a vital artery navigating the heart of the Rockies.

As Dr. George Hilton notes in his book, " American Narrow Gauge Railroads ," the Rio Grande was not the only 3-foot network completed, several others sprang up during the 19th century to serve the mining boom (to read about all of these enterprises a copy of his in-depth title is a must!).

In his book, " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads , " author John Stover notes Colorado's rail mileage peaked at over 5,500 during the 1920's and slowly declined from that point.

Today, the Association of American Railroads notes the state currently has 2,452 miles in active service, operated by 10 different railroads

  • Boardwalk Park Museum

This museum is part of Windsor's historical exhibits related to the area's history.

Part of their collection includes a preserved/restored Greeley, Salt Lake & Pacific Railway ( Organized on January 17, 1881, the GSL&P was financed by the original Union Pacific Railroad.  Following its bankruptcy, it became a part of the Colorado & Southern in 1898, which itself was acquired by the growing Chicago, Burlington & Quincy on December 19, 1908. ) wooden depot built in 1882, a caboose, and other railroad displays.

Additional exhibits to peruse within the greater Boardwalk Park include the Eaton House, a schoolhouse, a German-Russian farmhouse, a beet-shanty, and a prayer-meeting house.

The museum is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each season from Thursday through Sunday (please visit the town's website to find out exact hours of operation).  Admission is free although donations are welcome.

  • Castle Rock Museum

The Castle Rock Museum is operated by the Castle Rock Historical Society, housed within the town's preserved and restored Denver & Rio Grande stone (rhyolite) depot completed in 1875.

The building does not sit at its original location, however, and was moved from its trackside perch in 1970.  In 1974 it was placed on the National Register Of Historic Places and Castle Rock's  Register Of Local Landmarks in 1994.

According to the historical society, formed in 1991 to preserve the structure, it still carries its original interior, ticket window, baggage area, and more than a century of "graffiti on its walls."

There are various exhibits on display and admission is free of charge.  The museum is open year-round although only on select days of the week.  To learn more and plan a visit please visit the society's website.

  • Colorado Railroad Museum

One of the most enjoyable of scenic train rides can be found at his museum in Golden; the state's largest such facility which aims to keep alive its fascinating history with the iron horse.

The organization was formed in 1959 and has grown considerably over that time.  They currently feature two replica depots and preserve thirteen steam locomotives of either standard or narrow-gauge.

A few are operational to host train rides around the grounds (along with other special events during the year).  These include:

Other equipment include diesel locomotives, rare "Galloping Geese" rail cars originally operated on the Rio Grande Southern, and several passenger cars.

  • Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad

Colorado train rides at the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad are somewhat unique in that its width is only 2 feet, not the standard 3-feet of most others.

It is based in Cripple Creek, Colorado, is another of the state's many narrow-gauge tourist attractions.

The little railroad has been in operation since the summer of 1967, growing into a popular entertainment venue since that time.

Its operation covers a total of 4 miles, utilizing former segments of two historic narrow-gauge systems; the Midland Terminal Railway and Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad.

They currently have four small steam locomotives on the property, all of various historical stature:

  • 0-4-0 #2 (built by Henschel & Sohn of Germany in 1936)
  • 0-4-0T #3 (H.K. Porter, 1927)
  • 0-4-4-0 #1 (another German-built locomotive, a product of Orenstein & Koppel in 1902)
  • 0-4-4-0T #4 (a Mallet-type locomotive built by an English firm, W. G. Bagnall, in 1947 for a South African sugar plantation)

The CC&VNG operating season is normally from late May through early October.

  • Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

Aside from the Durango & Silverton, the most popular of all scenic train rides is found at the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic, which enjoys tens of thousands of visitors annually.

Its heritage interweaves with the nearby Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge as both utilize former sections of Rio Grande's famed 36-inch gauge network in southwestern Colorado.

The creation of the C&TS begins in the 1960's when the D&RGW sought abandonment of this unprofitable trackage which had garnered only lukewarm revenue for decades.

In its final years the railroad witnessed an increased interest as a tourist attraction, playing host to many excursions.  As a result, the state stepped in and purchased the Durango-Silverton section in 1970.

Together with New Mexico, Colorado also acquired the Antonio - Chama segment, creating today's Cumbres & Toltec Scenic.  The original steam locomotives and all structures can still be found along both preserved sections.

  • Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The most popular of all the state's scenic train rides is the marquee Durango & Silverton Narrow-Gauge, which operates the fabled narrow gauge lines of the former Denver & Rio Grande Western.

Folks from far and wide have ridden this national treasure which continues to use the same steam locomotives that operated under the D&RGW.

After completing the deal with the Rio Grande in 1970, Colorado received all remaining steam locomotives, freight cars/equipment, and buildings/shops.

In total, the D&SNG received eight original Denver & Rio Grande Western steam locomotives while the C&TS picked up nine. Today, nearly all are operational.

Currently, the Durango & Silverton’s passenger trains are pulled by these vintage and authentic narrow gauge locomotives that operate a 45-mile route between Durango and Silverton.  The railroad also hosts many special events and trains throughout the operating season.

  • Forney Museum Of Transportation

This organization, established in 1961, is located along Brighton Boulevard in Denver with more than 600 transportation-related artifacts.

Their slogan "Anything on Wheels" rings quite true as you can see everything from locomotives and automobiles to airplanes and bicycles.

The museum's locomotives include:

  • 0-4-0 #7 (built by Henschel & Sohn of Germany in 1930)
  • Cora-Texas Plantation 0-4-4T #108 (a 36-inch tank engine built by H.K. Porter in 1897)
  • Chicago & North Western 4-6-0 #444 (built by American Locomotive in 1906 as a Class R-1 "Ten-Wheeler")
  • Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" #4005 (manufactured by Alco in October, 1941)

The latter is the group's prized piece and one of the largest steamers ever built.  Their were 25 of these giants constructed in the early 1940's to tackle the stiff grades over the Wasatch Mountains and Wyoming's Sherman Hill.

Today, eight are preserved with one, #4014, owned by Union Pacific. Except major holidays the Forney Museum is open throughout most of the year.

  • Fort Collins Municipal Railway

If you are interested in scenic train rides centered around interurban/trolley history you may want to visit the Fort Collins Municipal Railway, based in Fort Collins.

This tourist train operates 1.5-miles of the former Denver & Interurban Railroad, an interurban public-transit system that once served the city.

The history of the D&I, a subsidiary of the Colorado & Southern, can be traced back to its opening in Fort Collins on December 29, 1907.

This system also operated a much larger network stretching 51 miles from Denver to Boulder which then looped back to the former city.  It also maintained a short branch to nearby Eldorado Springs.

Early on the D&I enjoyed some success as few steam railroads served its cities.  However, as the automobile's popularity grew, Dr. George Hilton notes in his book, " The Electric Interurban Railways In America ," deficits began appearing in 1920.

As a means of curbing losses, service throughout Fort Collins was suspended on July 10, 1918.  Today, the Fort Collins Municipal Railway operates restored Birney Safety Car #21. They normally run on weekends and host special excursions throughout the year.

  • Galloping Goose #5

Arguably the most unique of all scenic train rides can be found aboard Galloping Goose #5 . This uniquely restored, historic rail car was returned to operating condition in 1998. It now offers rides on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic and Durango & Silverton during select times of the year.

  • Georgetown Loop Railroad

The narrow-gauge Georgetown Loop Railroad (maintained by the Colorado Historical Society as the Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park) operates a 2-mile segment of the former Colorado Central Railroad's narrow-gauge (36-inch) trackage between Georgetown and Silver Plume.

Colorado scenic train rides are largely centered around the state's historic narrow-gauge railroads and this attraction is now different.

Its heritage can be traced back to 1881 as a Colorado Central subsidiary known as the Georgetown, Breckenridge & Leadville Railroad to serve the area's thriving silver mines.

The Colorado Central was a far-reaching endeavor envisioned by William A.H. Loveland to build a standard-gauge main line from Golden to Hazard, near Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Its narrow-gauge lines would subsequently serve the aforementioned mining towns but due to the very rugged topography around Clear Creek, engineers had to devise some incredible features to maintain manageable grades.

These included horseshoe curves, 4% grades, four bridges across Clear Creek, and the Devil’s Gate High Bridge.  The latter structure rose 95-feet over the gorge and is the Georgetown Loop's featured attraction today.

  • Hugo Roundhouse Preservation, Inc.

This group's goal is to preserve and restore the Union Pacific's former roundhouse in Hugo, Colorado. They eventually plan to open a museum on the grounds.  To learn more about their efforts please visit their website .

Limon Heritage Museum & Railroad Park

Located in the town of Limon this museum is housed within the preserved Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific and Union Pacific union depot built in 1910.

Originally constructed from wood it was later modernized in 1936 and is currently listed on the National Register Of Historic Places.

While the latter railroad served much of eastern Colorado and directly reached Denver, the former was somewhat of an outlier.

It also enjoyed service to Denver and Colorado Springs (its main line split at Limon) but only via a single route running west across Kansas.

According to the museum they currently feature several displays along with a Union Pacific caboose and boxcar dating from the 1890's.

While you are there also be sure to see other exhibits on display such as lunch counter-diner, sheep wagons, a Cheyenne tipi, working chuck wagon, and a one-room schoolhouse.  Their open season runs from Memorial through Labor Day.

  • Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad

The Leadville, Colorado & Southern is based in the historic mining town of Leadville (also known as the "the highest incorporated city in North America") and takes passengers through the spectacular Rocky Mountains on 2.5 hour trips, which depart from the town's restored Denver, South Park & Pacific (Colorado & Southern) brick/stone depot constructed in 1883.

As far as scenic train rides are concerned this attraction operates the last component of the DSP&P still in existence.

The DSP&P grew into the second-largest narrow-gauge railroad throughout the Rocky Mountains with a network that wound its way some 340 miles from Denver to Gunnison and Leadville along with various branches.

The DSP&P, also known as the " South Park Line ," was incorporated on October 2, 1872, and remained profitable until about 1883.

It was reorganized as the Denver, Leadville & Gunnison Railway in August, 1889 at which time it came under Union Pacific's control.  Following UP's bankruptcy on October 13, 1893 the property became a part of the new Colorado & Southern in 1898, which itself came under Chicago, Burlington & Quincy's control in 1908.

Most of the DSP&P was abandoned over the years except for very short segments, such as the LC&S's 10.5 miles which allows for 21 mile round trips.

The tourist line utilizes a diesel, GP9 #1714 painted in LC&S colors, to pull its trains.  There is also a preserved steam locomotive on display, Colorado & Southern 2-8-0 #641 (built by Alco's Brooks Works in 1906).

  • Manitou & Pike’s Peak Railway

Unquestionably the most unique of all scenic train rides is this cog railway operates up Pike's Peak, along a line that covers nearly 9 miles and hosts trips lasting more than 3 hours.

While this isn't a traditional tourist train it's tough to find one that affords such spectacular scenery. With tourism to Pike's Peak rapidly growing by the 1880's, the first attempt at constructing a railroad to the summit was chartered in 1884.

It was to use standard adhesion to scale the mountain with a ruling grade of 5% and switchbacks to keep grades manageable.

While some work was completed the plan stalled due to monetary issues. So, a cheaper alternative was arranged; a plain dirt wagon road.

Before this latest plan could be completed, Zalmon Simmons rode a mule to the top and was so awestruck by the beauty that he firmly believed it should be available for the general public.

Realizing that a railroad would be the best and most efficient means of transporting guests to the top, and with resources already available, Simmons founded the Pike's Peak & Manitou Railway in 1888.

In 1889 the road was renamed as the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway and began construction within the year.  In 1890 the M&PP was opened about half way to the appropriately named Halfway House Hotel and by 1891 the route was completed to the Pike's Peak summit at 14,115 feet, 8.9 miles from Manitou.

Moffat Road Railroad Museum

The Moffat Road Railroad Museum, located in Granby, is a relatively new organization located adjacent to the former Rio Grande main line (now operated by Union Pacific).

Their growing collection includes a few pieces of rolling stock, a 1913 steam derrick (maintenance), 1,100-square foot O scale model railroad layout.

Their featured display is West Side Lumber 3-truck Shay #8 that will be showcased at the museum.

  • Museum of Northwest Colorado

This museum is located in Craig and, as its name suggests, focuses on the history of northwest Colorado.  Most of their collection focuses on subjects not related to the railroad.

However, some noteworthy displays include a small model layout based on David Moffat's Denver & Salt Lake Railway as well as his private business car, named for daughter, Marcia .

It has been beautifully restored and is available for tours.  Moffat's D&SL began in 1902 to build a secondary route from Denver to Salt Lake City.  However, he ran out of money in 1913 having only reached Craig, Colorado.

According to Mike Schafer's took, " Classic American Railroads ," part of the D&SL crossed 11,680-foot Rollins Pass.

It was situated somewhat northwest of Denver and was only surmounted via a series of tortuous switchbacks, carrying grades as high as 4%.  So difficult was this stretch that 23 miles of railroad were required to connect two points just 8 miles apart.

To improve operations the city agreed in 1922 to help fund a new tunnel under James Peak.  Following six years of work the $18 million project was completed in 1928 and named for D&SL's founder.  Moffat Tunnel was 6.1 miles in length and reduced the trip from hours to a mere 15 minutes.

  • Platte Valley Trolley

If you're interested in additional scenic train rides geared towards trolleys the Platte Valley Trolley offers just such an attraction.

They operate from mid-April through the end of October every weekend using trolley cars along a route that allows for about a 25-minute ride.  This heritage streetcar system is maintained by the Denver Tramway Heritage Society and was inaugurated on July 4, 1989.

  • Pueblo Railway Museum

The Pueblo Railway Museum is based in Pueblo, Colorado and one of the state's growing such facilities.

Its home is next to the beautifully restored Pueblo Union Depot, a large three-story stone building that opened in 1890 and originally used by the Denver & Rio Grande Western, Missouri Pacific, Colorado & Southern, and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe.

The museum's featured displays are located outdoors on its storage tracks.  It houses one notable steam locomotive, Santa Fe 4-8-4 #2912, a late-era design manufactured by Baldwin in 1944.

In addition, there are several diesels on the property including:

  • Colorado Fuel & Iron 25-tonner #11 (General Electric)
  • Fibreboard Products 44-tonner #1 (General Electric)
  • Department of Transportation U30C #001
  • Three Chicago & North Western GP7's (#102-104, built in 1951, all are fully operational)

In addition to these locomotives the group maintains a fleet of preserved freight and passenger cars.  Admission is free.

  • Ridgway Railroad Museum

The Ridgway Railroad Museum, based in Ridgway states its primary mission as preserving the railroad heritage of Ouray County.

Along with its collection of mostly narrow-gauge equipment the museum also offers train rides.

The group does not have a steam or diesel locomotive preserved within its collection but does house one of the rare "Galloping Geese" operated by the Rio Grande Southern (RGS).

This railroad was one of Colorado's largest and most interesting narrow-gauges.  It was the last endeavor built to serve the mining boom within the San Juan Mountains, running from a connection with the Rio Grande at Ridgway to a Durango, utilizing a network that formed a rough "C."

By the late 19th century the D&RG had acquired full control of the system.  Much of it was abandoned and dismantled between August and September of 1952.

While there is no restored depot on the grounds they do feature an RGS outhouse/coal storage building (the Denver & Rio Grande's depot in Ridgway is preserved albeit is currently a private residence).

The museum is open only during the summer months from June 1st through September 30th.  To learn more and plan a visit please visit their website.

  • Royal Gorge Route Railroad

In what many would argue is the most breathtaking of all scenic train rides, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad operates part of the Denver & Rio Grande Western’s trackage through this beautiful natural wonder.

The Royal Gorge Route owns 24 miles of this legendary stretch of the Rio Grande, departing daily from Cañon City, Colorado.

The Royal Gorge Route was created in 1998 after Union Pacific decided to sell 12 miles of the Royal Gorge pass although the Class I railroad continues to own the rest of the dormant route.

While the river and gorge remain the top attraction the Hanging Bridge also draws visitors, a structure built by the Santa Fe during the two railroad's war for the canyon.

The structure uses angled supports anchored to each side of the canyon walls to sustain the bridge's weight over the river. It is a fascinating design that remains the keynote feature (during the Rio Grande's days it was a popular spot for publicity photos).

Today, the Royal Gorge Route offers a variety of adventures from cab rides and group charters to several different excursions.

  • Tiny Town Railroad

The Tiny Town Railroad is located in Morrison offering scenic train rides using authentic, miniature steam locomotives.

This attraction is somewhat unique in that the railroad operates through an entire, scale town, complete with every store and building one could imagine!

Its history can actually be traced back over a century when George Turner built the "town" of "Turnerville" as an entertainment venue for his daughter in 1915.

Just five years later it had garnered so much interest it opened to the public.  By 1924 it contained some 125 buildings with roughly 20,000 visitors making the trek each year to see the town!

Since that time it has had boom and bust periods although its modern era can be traced back to 1987 of what by then was known as "Tiny Town" was underway.

By 1989 more than 60,000 folks were visiting the site annually, a number that has grown considerably since that time.  Admission to the town is required with an operating season lasting from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Wes Barris's SteamLocomotive.com is simply the best web resource on the study of steam locomotives.

It is difficult to truly articulate just how much material can be found at this website.

It is quite staggering and a must visit!

Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge

Continuing a common theme, this is another narrow gauge train that connects two old mining towns. However, this one was pieced together in the 1960s using cars from other mines. They remodeled and relocated the old stations, and even had a custom water tower built and shipped from Denver. It’s a short trip, but a fun ride with some great views.

Things To Do

Travel | the best colorado train trips whether you want scenery or family-friendly fun, there’s a summer railway adventure for everyone in the centennial state.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad. ...

Time travel may not be a thing. But taking a trip on one of Colorado’s legendary railways gets you pretty darn close. Train tracks wind up mountainsides, showing off the same views that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to pen “America the Beautiful” at the turn of the 20th century. They connect storied mining towns in the Rocky Mountains and, for drama’s sake, trace the ledge of Toltec Gorge just south of the Colorado border amid a remarkable landscape that has drawn Hollywood filmmakers for decades.

Steam ahead for four of Colorado’s iconic train trips that are the perfect speed for summer.

GEORGETOWN, CO - OCTOBER 31: From left, Olivia Espinoza, of Denver, smiles at Shannon Foy and Shreya Patel, visiting from Texas, as they take photos during the Georgetown Loop Railroad ride on Sunday, October 31, 2021 in Georgetown, Colorado. (Photo by Rachel Woolf/Special to the Denver Post)

Best day trip: Georgetown Loop Railroad

With Victorian architecture and an occasional train whistle setting the soundtrack, Georgetown is a small town that’s big on charm. But did you know that in the 1800s, this mountain town 45 minutes west of Denver was known as the “Silver Queen of Colorado” and was the third-largest city in the state? Today the Georgetown Loop connects two of the state’s famous mining towns, Georgetown and Silver Plume, and you can take in the sights during a round-trip narrow-gauge, steam-powered train ride.

“Those who haven’t seen a steam engine operate will be amazed at how impressive these locomotives are, using 19th-century technology to pull a heavy train up a steep mountain,” says Mark Graybill, president and general manager of the Georgetown Loop. “Unlike today’s locomotives, each engine almost seems human, with its own personality.” It’s almost as if you can hear them breathe, taking heavy sighs after they’ve been working hard, he says.

Round out your trip by adding on a mine tour and gold panning, and pop in for a cocktail at The Bread Bar in Silver Plume which is housed in an 1800s-era bakery and names its cocktails after local mining legends.

  • Duration: About 75 minutes
  • Cost: Tickets start at $24.95 for children ages 3-15 and $30.95 for everyone else. Children age 2 or younger ride for free.

Best scenery: The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

In the late 1800s, tourists wanting to see the views from the top of Pikes Peak made the journey on mules. But Zalmon Simmons (the founder of what became the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Co.) had the idea to engineer a more comfortable ride up the 14,115-foot mountain. In 1889 construction of the Pikes Peak Cog Railway began. One of the early Pikes Peak passengers was Katharine Lee Bates, who would conclude that “all the wonder of America seemed displayed there,” leading her to write “America the Beautiful.”

The cog railway recently shut down for three years so workers could rebuild and modernize the 9 miles of track that gain 7,795 feet in elevation. In 2021 the railway reopened, coinciding with its 130th year. Aboard shiny red train cars engineered in Switzerland, riders embark on a journey from the Manitou depot to the top of Pikes Peak, where they can get out and enjoy those awe-inspiring summit views as well as the new Summit House.

Along the ride, keep your eyes peeled for bighorn sheep, foxes and marmots and marvel at the 2,000-year-old Bristlecone pines that dot the route. If you’d like a bit more adventure, arrange to ride the train up and then hike down on Barr Trail.

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Cost: Tickets start at $48.50 for children up to age 12 and $58.50 for everyone else.

The Cumbres & Toltec train chugs through remote terrain around the Colorado-New Mexico border and climbs to 10,200 feet at Cumbres Pass. (Provided by Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad)

Best for movie buffs: Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has appeared in more than 40 films and is perhaps best known for the circus animal scenes in “Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade.” The railway also received lots of air time in the Jay Z-produced film “The Harder They Fall” and in the recent movie “Hostiles.”

Running coal-fired steam locomotives from Antonito as well as Chama, N.M., the railroad follows 64 miles of tracks first laid down in 1880 that zigzag, crossing between Colorado and New Mexico 11 times. The train skirts canyon walls through 600-foot-deep Toltec Gorge, burrows through tunnels, and steams over Cascade Trestle (137 feet above a creek). It also ascends to the top of 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass, which is the highest point reached by any steam railroad in North America.

You’ve got lots of train trip options, but new this year is the 168 Dinner Train and 168 Brunch Train which provide a ride in a museum-quality historic train in all of its Victorian splendor.

  • Duration: Multiple trips, ranging from express rides to full-day excursions.
  • Cost: Rates start at $25 for children ages 2-5, $45 for children ages 6-12, and $90 for everyone else.

Trains of the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Best for the whole family (Fido, too): Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad

The railroad uses three, coal-fired narrow-gauge locomotives during the summer season, but one that kids especially love is the blue and red No. 2 engine that looks like a real-life Thomas from “Thomas the Tank Engine.”

A lot of ground is covered during this 45-minute route that goes south of Cripple Creek, passing the Midland Terminal Wye over a reconstructed trestle and past historic mines, including the deserted mining camp of Anaconda. Legend has it that the mine was so rich that ore was plowed out by ox teams.

Train cars are mostly open-air, and well-behaved dogs are allowed to join on the 4-mile ride.

  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Cost: Tickets are $12 for children ages 3-12, $15 for seniors over age 65, free for children age 2 or younger, and $17 for everyone else.
  • Info: cripplecreekrailroad.com

Of course these aren’t the only popular train rides around the state. We also enjoy riding on the Royal Gorge Route Railroad , Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and Leadville Railroad and at the Colorado Railroad Museum. Some of these railroads also offer lunch and dinner rides and special excursions featuring music and photography tips.

Durango, Colorado was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1880. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed, and the train began hauling both freight and passengers.

The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from Southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious.

This historic train has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, carrying passengers behind historic steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line. It is a family-friendly ride sure to create memories that will last a lifetime while offering a view of Colorado’s mountain splendor inaccessible by highway. Relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

The landscape between Burns Canyon and Dotsero is both rugged and beautiful. You can view red sandstone reflecting in placid water as well as scrub-topped stratified hills looking much like the stereotypical bandit country of Western movies. Railway aficionados may know that the Dotsero Cutoff was completed in 1934. It provides a connecting line between the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, which operated the highest mainline in the USA, and the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad.

Glenwood Canyon is undoubtedly one of the most dramatic stretches of the Rockies to the Red Rocks journey. The high-sided canyon twists for 12.5 miles on the eastern approach to Glenwood Springs. The train windows give you views of the impressive civic engineering facilitating Interstate 70's sweep alongside the Colorado River. Close your eyes for much more than a blink and you’ll miss seeing Shoshone Generating Station – a hydroelectric power plant.

In 1884 Dr Wallace De Beque, a Canadian who was a veteran of the American Civil War, settled in the place that now bears his surname. The location which he moved to with his third wife is at the eastern end of a tight-sided canyon that's also named after him. The De Beque Canyon curves for 15 miles, offering ample opportunities to capture the red-orange hues of sun-kissed, stratified rock as the train rolls through.
