Covid-19 pandemic & this website.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has had a huge impact on local Gold Coast businesses, which rely heavily on visitors from Queensland, interstate and overseas.

During this time, it is hard to keep the website fully up to date with all the changes.  In the meantime here are some resources for visitors. Leaving Brisbane behind and heading down the Brisbane River heading across Moreton Bay for a Tangalooma Day Trip

Some picture perfect winter weather and an incredible array of wildlife made this one of the best day trips I have ever done.

Even the boat trip over to Tangalooma on Moreton Island was incredible, we spotted rare river dolphins before we even left the Brisbane River!

During one August, my sister was visiting from New Zealand and we wanted to do something special to celebrate my birthday.

She is a marine biologist, I knew it had to be on or in water!

We only had one day to do something, so a day trip to Tangalooma , was the perfect choice!

The trip on the boat takes about an hour and half. It isn't that far, but they have to abide by the speed limits in the Brisbane River.

The ferry terminal at Holt Street Wharf is close to Brisbane Airport at Pinkemba and quite far up the river.

First views of Moreton Island sand on way to Tangalooma

As soon as you get out to Moreton Bay, the motors rev up and off you go.

We stayed on deck, so we could see as much as we could, and also because neither of us are very good on boats!

We did go prepared with our ginger tablets, salty chips and water to drink!

We really didn't need to on the day we went. You can see from the photos that it was really calm.

The boat trip really pleasant and not at all choppy. But I have seen it whip up a bit in the bay, so I guess we were lucky.

Tangalooma Island Resort - First Glimpse from the Ferry

As we got closer to Moreton Island we started to get excited as we could see the incredibly white sand.

Moreton Island is apparently the 3rd largest sand island in the world .

The water clarity and colour was breathtaking.

Unfortunately, I don't think I was able to capture that fully with my photos .

Our first view of Tangalooma resort was the apartments by the jetty and the beachfront.

Taking in the view on our Tangalooma Day Trip.

Bare in mind this was August, and the weather was brilliant. We hadn't packed our swimmers, snorkels and towels for our Tangalooma day trip...

...and I was beginning to wish that we had!

We were both awestruck with the sheer beauty of this secret island paradise!

And looking back across Moreton bay we could see Brisbane and telt just a little bit sorry for everyone else who was in those office blocks we could see working on this amazing day!

It was about this time in our Tangalooma day trip that I wished we had packed our swimmers, snorkels and towels!

You can see how clear the water is. This is a Star fish in Moreton Bay.

We had booked ahead to include an optional tour called the Dugong Eco Tour.

It isn't available everyday, and if the weather isn't good it doesn't go out.

We were so lucky with the weather and the tour.

We saw turtles, flying fish, starfish, dolphins and of course dugongs galore.

Unfortunately, dugongs aren't photogenic unless you are under the water with them!

From above dugongs (sea cows or manatees) just look like big brown logs lumbering along in the water and only come up for a quick puff of air.

About Tangalooma

Tangalooma is on the western side of Moreton Island. About half way up, about in line with Redcliffe in Brisbane's northern suburbs. Moreton Island, is the third largest sand island in the world.

Tangalooma was originally a shore based whaling station which was open for 10 years and closed 1962.

Just north of the resort are the Tangalooma Wrecks. They are great for snorkelling or SCUBA diving. Visitors can take a Tangalooma day trip , or stay longer .

Words cannot describe the feeling of seeing them though.

We saw a herd of around 20 and we hung with them for ages. It was priceless, and my sister, she was almost speechless!

Other visitors on the Tangalooma day trip who didn't go on the extra tour with us got to try out some of the other activities like sand tobogganning, parasailing, jet skiing.

I think a few even braved the water for a snorkel on the Tangalooma Wrecks.

For a day trip, there is plenty to do and the resort was being upgraded when we were there with extra apartments and other facilities being built.

Turtle in the water off Tangalooma.

I spent the whole day feeling guilty about being there without my family!

It is definitely somewhere you will want to share!

When we got back from our Dugong Eco Tour, we had some time for a bit more of an exploration of the resort.

We saw the relics of the old whaling station, walked along the beach towards the Tangalooma Wrecks, checked out the Tangalooma Villas as somewhere to stay on a return visit and enjoyed watching the sun starting to set over the water.

Tangalooma Day Trip Details and Tips

I recommend you book your Tangalooma day trip ahead of time because it gets very busy during peak holiday times especially Queensland School Holidays .

Check Out Day Trip Options

I suggest you book this sort of trip early in your holiday, as weather can cause boat trips to be cancelled and this gives you the best chance to reschedule.

Always check the terms and conditions when you book any tour. You may be able to change the dates, subject to availability if things change. Please do check that, don't take my word for it, as these things have a habit of changing!

Some tours only go on certain days, but when you book it will be obvious, even online!

Being a local, for our Tangalooma day trip, I saved a bit of money by driving to the ferry terminal .

If I was on holiday in the Gold Coast, I would probably have paid the extra to be picked up from my Gold Coast hotel for a fantastic day trip to Tangalooma!

When you are on holiday in a location you don't know well, then the extra cost would easily have outweighed the stress and worry driving to the ferry terminal in Brisbane, trying to find the right place, be on time, negotiate toll roads and fighting with Brisbane peak hour commuter traffic!

Tangalooma sunset - watching the sun starting to set over the water.

If you are a family on a budget , it may be worth considering hiring a car and then taking a Tangalooma tour with a Brisbane departure .

Just make sure you know where you are going to meet the tour and leave plenty of time .

The tour we went on left at 10am from the ferry terminal and left Tangalooma about 4pm. We were back in the Gold Coast comfortably by 7pm, though if you come back with the tour you may be a little later getting back to your Gold Coast hotel.

We didn't get to see the wild dolphin feeding, there are some tours where you stay back on the island to do that and catch the later ferry. So that would get you back to your Gold Coast hotel quite a bit later.

Check out the different options for Tangalooma day tours , ferries, Moreton Bay cruises and transfers.

Things To Take With You On Your Tangalooma Day Trip

Here is a list of things to take with you on your Tangalooma day trip. Some are optional, others are a must!

  • Sun protection - hat, shirt, sunscreen and sunglasses. These are a must all year round.
  • Warm clothes just in case the wind whips up and in winter it can be cooler.
  • Camera - still and video. And don't forget the instruction booklet if you are not sure how to use them!
  • Sea sickness remedy - if you need one. Or else stay on deck!
  • Swim wear, towel and snorkel if you have one (though I think you can hire snorkels there)

Whale Watching Season At Tangalooma

Whale Watching is also available from Tangalooma with the whale watching trips taking in Moreton Bay and out into the ocean depending on where the whales are. There are options to combine a trip to Tangalooma with whale watching during the whale watching season which runs from June to late October each year.

If you’re looking for an incredible day trip from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, Tangalooma Island Resort needs to be on your list! Tangalooma is on Moreton Island and only a 75-minute ferry ride from Brisbane. And the best part is, Tangalooma has one of the most unique and easily accessible snorkeling spots in southern Queensland.

Recently my husband and I celebrated our two-year wedding anniversary, and for occasions like this, we always like to go away. The original plan was to be in Italy but then of course COVID ruined that. So taking advantage of the beautiful state we live in, we thought a day trip to Tangalooma would be perfect. Tangalooma Island Resort was absolutely stunning, the water (although a little cold) was amazing, so blue and crystal clear.

There’re so many options when it comes to visiting Tangalooma. You can simply just book the ferry over and do your own thing for the day, or there are heaps of tour & accommodation options. We booked the ‘Beach Day Cruise’ through Tangalooma Island Resort for $89 each. This pack is basically a look after yourself kind of day. Which was perfect for us! Also, it’s the best value for money because it covered your ferry tickets, use of the resort facilities, and includes lunch vouchers, that could be used at any of the cafes & restaurants.

How to Get to Tangalooma

The ferry departs from the Holt Street Wharf in Brisbane. We drove up from the Gold Coast and that took us just over an hour. There’s plenty of free parking on Holt Street or it’s $15 a day to park at the ferry terminal. If you’re flying in, the ferry terminal is only a 10-minute drive from Brisbane airport.

When we first arrived on the island all I could think about is getting to the beach, the water looked incredible. Luckily the pier is right in front of the resort. The beach is really long so there was plenty of room for everyone to have their own space. The ocean was calm, very clear, and the most amazing color.

Snorkeling at the Tangalooma Shipwrecks

The best part about the day was snorkeling at the shipwrecks. There are 15 shipwrecks laying only a short swim from the shore. In 1963 these ships were deliberately sunk to create a break wall for smaller boats.

There are snorkeling tours you can book but honestly, you don’t need to! From the resort, it’s a 25-30 minutes walk, straight down the beach to the shipwrecks. Then from the shore, we swam out in under 5 minutes.

The only thing you’ll need to do is check the tide times, generally, the best time to snorkel is around 1.5 hours before low tide. Our plan was to go then but the wind was starting to pick up so we decided to go a bit earlier. By the time we got in the water it was about 2.5 hours before low tide and it was actually the most perfect time. In most areas, the visibility was very good and the currents weren’t too strong. We snorkeled for about an hour, didn’t see any turtles or dolphins but so many fish, and the wrecks looked awesome.

If you’re not keen on getting in the water, Tangalooma Island Resort offers glass-bottom boat and kayak tours. And, we took our own snorkeling gear but it’s possible to hire some on the island.

Day Tours & Accommodation at Tangalooma Resort

If you wanted to stay on the island for longer the accommodation at Tangalooma Island Resort looked beautiful and the rooms have the most gorgeous ocean views. There are also so many tours and activities available. Moreton Island is the world’s third-largest sand island, so during my next visit, I definitely want to go 4 wheel driving and sand tobogganing.

If you’re there in the evening you could take part in the unique opportunity to hand feed, wild bottlenose dolphins!

  • Trek38052692954 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful fish, but disappointing experience The day snorkeling tour we took at Tangalooma was a complete disappointment. The ferry, facilities, and lunch were provided by the Tangalooma Island Resort, where we experienced long waits, cold and too few showers, and subpar food. The tour itself was conducted by Tangatours, where we found inadequate equipment (very thin wetsuits in freezing conditions, cheap and leaky snorkeling gear), and only 30 minutes of actual snorkeling time. The staff was okay but not particularly hospitable. In our opinion, $150 for this package is simply a rip-off. However, from the customer service perspective, the conditions encountered are considered normal. Read more Written 3 May 2024

  • Q7894RFcarmeng 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Marine discovery cruise to Moreton Island The ferry across was slightly longer and then you are told to go to the tour office to check in straight away. I booked onto the Marine Discovery cruise. Don't bother, you see a turtle or 2 very briefly and some fish. Just do the beach day visit and walk to the shipwrecks. You get a really good view of them. The food isn't great either. It's a nice island and a nice beach though. Read more Written 10 March 2024

  • T5610MHlaurar 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Spent the Whole Day Lining Up - I'm Never Getting that Time Back TLDR; I will never do another Tangalooma Tour and will warn others away from them. We booked a day cruise with a guided snorkel of the wrecks and late return with "sunset cocktails" and dolphin feeding viewing for a Saturday. We had hoped that with the extra hours on the island we would also be able to walk over to the wrecks to do some extra snorkeling. Sadly there was no time because every single thing we needed to do required a wait in a long line. Our day trip came with vouchers for access to the "VIP" day lounge with showers, vouchers for food, and vouchers for two cocktails. The ferry: The ferry was quite full. Due to people saving seats with their things and then wandering off to spend their time somewhere else on the ferry, my SO and I were unable to sit next to each other. When I booked the day trip, the information said that the ferry took 70 minutes, but it actually took at least 90 minutes. As others have mentioned we were advised to show up an hour before departure time to check in, the first long line up of the day. The "VIP" day lounge: there are small lockers (require a $2 coin to lock each time), 2 toilets and 2 showers per gendered restroom. There were stacks of towels with a sign saying these were not for beach use. We had to go line up at reception to get beach towels - the line up at reception was unexpectedly long. When we returned at the end of the day to shower there was a massive pile of used towels and no fresh towels for the shower. It appeared that the lounge restrooms had not been serviced during the day, as the floors were muddy and, as mentioned, the lack of towels. The food: we ate at the cafe and were able to get a light lunch (sandwich and bottled water) using the vouchers. There was a line up to order. It was difficult to find seating. The wrecks snorkel: this was advertised as a 90 minute snorkel tour. When we arrived at the island we went to the Tanga Tours desk where they told us our tour would be at 3:15 and to show up at the watersports hut at 3:00. We got there at 3:00 and stood by the check-in tent with several others waiting for the tour. There was a sign saying to fill in the online indemnity form, so we did that. Around 3:15 two staff people showed up and started checking people in. I didn't count how manny people there were, but I'd guess it was around 60. Check-in, which involved answering questions about swimming and snorkeling abilities, took a ridiculous amount of time. We already had our own snorkel gear with us, but the tour requires participants to wear a wet suit so we had to line up for that. (This is not a bad idea as many of the participants were non-swimmers or poor swimmers and the wrecks themselves are tetanus waiting to happen.) We were then split into smaller groups for the safety briefing before boarding the boat. By the time we were on the boat it was after 4:30. Once we arrived at the snorkel site (about 5 minutes) we were herded around the wrecks in our smaller groups at breakneck speed with hardly any time to actually look at what was beneath us. I spent most of the swim keeping track of where our guide and my SO were and avoiding getting kicked in the face by the other participants. It was not enjoyable at all. We got back to the resort after 5:00. Zero stars for the snorkel tour. Do not waste your money or time on this. The "sunset cocktail": after the snorkel and discovering that there were no more towels at the lounge for showering we went to the only open bar (one bar with two bartenders on a Saturday evening guys) to exchange our vouchers for a drink and watch the sunset. My SO lined up at the bar while I sat at a table on the terrace that we managed to snag. I people watched and watched a Curlew that seemed to think it was trapped on the terrace. Sunset was at around 6:30. My SO returned with the drinks at 6:45. The dolphin feeding viewing: If you have not seen the film "Nope" watch it (warning: disturbing scenes and blood). This gave me flashbacks to that film and it's own "feeding" scene. There were long lineups of people along the beach - one line for each dolphin. The area was lit with very bright floodlights and there was an announcer on a loud speaker. Photographers were in the water documenting each person's feeding. It just really felt wrong. As soon as the ferry staff started allowing people to board we got on, leaving the dystopian dolphin experience behind us. The feeding was not yet over so we had to wait a while before we finally left the island. We got back to Brisbane at 9:30pm. Note that Ubers are not given access to the ferry terminal at night but taxis are. This day trip was disappointing at its best. The descriptions on the site over-promise what it actually is, especially the guided snorkel of the wrecks. The bar situation was odd. The ""VIP" day lounge was pretty gross by the end of the day. But worst of all, we spent most of our time in lineups to get the things that we had paid for. Never again. Read more Written 24 February 2024

  • JayHi96 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Tangaloomeh We took our 4yo for the day cruise and dolphin feeding. The trip to the island was a glimpse of what was to come, with half the boat lining up at the bar at 10am. Once on the island we were shunted along and met with a tour guide, who gave us vague details of what was to come, we spent the day on the beach and on a fish feeding cruise, which was uneventful, but fun. Unfortunately, the dolphin feeding only happens at 730pm, which too late for our little one, so we missed it in favour of a trip home early. When we tried to board the earlier ferry, we were lectured by the older man at the ticket booth about how we are supposed to wait until 8pm to board. The trip back was full of very drunk people from a work Xmas party, which made for a colorful experience. Read more Written 20 December 2023

  • 81mason 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Happy & Memorable Experience We took the 7.30 ferry to Tangalooma, did the ATV activity in the morning. That was really good fun! I would highly recommend that! We wore our own shoes but the ATV tour does provide you with some shoes if you happen to be wearing flip flops. The weather was perfect so spent some time chilling at the beach! The main course was the dolphin feeding in the EVENING (6.30pm after sunset). Apparently that's when they dolphines know its their food time. The feeding takes a few minutes and immediately after everyone have to board the ferry right after. I'd recommend bringing some spare clothes to change on the ferry as you would be cold and soaked after getting into the water. Overall, a very happy and memorable experience for my wife and I. Gold Coast day tour destinations

The Gold Coast, south of Brisbane, is one energetic coastal town. Its distinct high-rises built along awesome sun-kissed surf beaches offers world-class theme parks, active nightlife and designer boutiques. While on the other side, explore the Gold Coast hinterland from scenic lookouts, relaxing bushwalk and lovely waterfalls.

Brisbane City

Enjoying a sub-tropical climate, it’s easy to be drawn into the outdoor lifestyle of the locals in Brisbane. A cosmopolitan city located inside a bend of Brisbane River, Brisbane has a flourishing live music scene, fantastic café culture and a laid-back way of life. Make sure to spend time at South Bank on the river, home to many cultural institutions, restaurants, gardens and Brisbane’s man-made lagoon.

This coastal paradise is Australia’s easternmost town and offers a casual and welcoming atmosphere. Byron Bay has a reputation for being alternative and diverse easily observed as you wander down the main street. Magnificent beaches of the Pacific Ocean contrasts beautifully with the sub-tropical hinterland and it’s all yours to enjoy!

Australia Zoo

Australia Zoo is located on the Sunshine Coast, one hour north of Brisbane. Coming here will be a wildlife experience unlike any other zoo. Its prime focus is wildlife conservation and there’s a team of exceptionally committed and passionate staff keen to have you fall in love with all the animals and educate on their amazing conservation efforts.

Imagine a giant surf wave of 14 metres high and 110 metres long about to crash in the outback … what a unique natural attraction! Aptly named Wave Rock, the ‘wave’ is located in the country town of Hyden and is composed of multi-coloured granite shaped over time by the gradual erosion of the softer rock below the upper edge. It is believed to be over 2,700 million years old.

You would not think that this island paradise is a mere 75 minute catamaran cruise from the booming and energetic river town of Brisbane. Moreton Island National Park takes up 98% of the island and is most famous for its resort accommodation, wild dolphin feeding, wreck diving and sand dunes. A perfect destination for a day trip or longer, for couples, families or singles, Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island offers something for everyone.

Stunning beaches dominate the Gold Coast and its main suburb Surfer’s Paradise but there’s more than meets the eye to this coastal gem. Enjoy a local tour on the amphibious Aquaduck, visit the lush mountains of the Gold Coast interior and stroll amongst the towering trees at the Rainforest Skywalk.
