Bathurst International becomes first confirmed 2023 TCR World Tour round

By TouringCarTimes

The 2023 Bathurst International race has become the first confirmed round for the inaugural TCR World Tour season.

“When planning the TCR World Tour, it was a natural decision for us to involve the TCR Australia Series and the Bathurst International as part of it,” said Lotti.

“As soon as I arrived at Mount Panorama this weekend, I realised why this circuit is regarded as one of the best in the world and why all international drivers want to race here.

“I have been for a lap of the track. It is unbelievable, and for me, it was clear that we have made the right decision to confirm that TCR World Tour will race here next year and beyond.”

A total of nine TCR World Tour race weekends will be hosted in 2023, starting in Europe with four rounds, two in South America, two in Australia and one in Asia.

“This is an unbelievable endorsement for the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series, having the new TCR World Tour as part of next year’s season,” said Liam Curkpatrick, CEO of the Australian Racing Group

“We have not seen an international field of touring cars compete at Mount Panorama in 25 years, so it will really put Bathurst back on the map.

“There is no better place to host TCR World Tour, and we’re looking forward to confirming the details of the second event that will only add to the value for our TCR Australia entrants.”

TCR World Tour gains FIA recognition for 2024, calendar to feature nine rounds

Following a one-year hiatus, world-level touring car racing returns to the line-up of FIA motor sport series. Resulting from an agreement between the FIA, the governing body of world motor sport, and WSC Group, the global rights holder for the TCR trademark, the TCR World Tour has been elevated to status of an FIA competition ahead of its second season of existence.

tcr world tour kalender 2023

The TCR World Tour concept was introduced in 2023, consisting of nine rounds around the world, and with the competitors joining the grid of existing national- or regional-level touring car series running TCR-spec cars. From 2024, the series will be known as Kumho FIA TCR World Tour, with the agreement covering a three-year period. Race formats and durations will vary, adapting to the regulations of a given series which hosts the round of the World Tour. The competition will utilise Kumho tyres, which are in use in the majority of TCR series around the world. NINE ROUNDS AND SIX CONTINENTS IN STORE The inaugural Kumho FIA TCR World Tour will feature nine events, with the geographical reach of the series set to increase from four to six continents as the competition gained FIA recognition, and with Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America all represented on the 2024 schedule. The nine-round schedule will be followed by the FIA TCR World Ranking Final, with the date and venue of that competition to be announced in due course. Marek Nawarecki ,  FIA Senior Circuit Sport Director , said: “ Being present on six different continents is a great start as we are set for the return of world-level FIA touring car racing. The format that Kumho FIA TCR World Tour will rely on next year is something that will help to build bridges between national- and regional-level touring car series and the pinnacle of touring car racing, creating a healthy ecosystem for this form of racing.   The FIA will bring its regulatory framework to TCR World Tour, overseeing Sporting and Technical Regulations and their application, which is essential given that events of different local series on the calendar have their respective differences.” Alan Gow, FIA Touring Car Commission President , said:  “Over the years, world touring car racing has been undergoing constant evolution, with different technical regulations and formats utilised, and with FIA titles decided either through a series or at a single event. Given that TCR is a proven set of technical regulations with a strong customer racing platform, the concept behind the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour is something that made a lot of sense for the FIA to support it, and we look forward to its success.” Marcello Lotti ,  WSC President , said:  “We are immensely proud that, after only one racing season, the concept of the Kumho TCR World Tour has already met with general approval from the motor sport community. 2023 has been successful thanks to the trust and support of the promoters of several national and regional TCR championships, the manufacturers, teams and drivers. To now be able to award an FIA title is the icing on the cake and provides us with powerful motivation to do our utmost to make this platform even stronger and more popular. Which is why our first efforts have been to focus on putting together an ambitious and attractive calendar for the next season. A string of nine events that makes the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour the first ever international series for touring cars to visit six continents.” Recent history of FIA world touring car racing includes WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup, which ran TCR specification cars from 2018 to 2022, and the FIA World Touring Car Championship, which existed from 2005 to 2017, using S2000 and later TC1 technical regulations. Prior to that, the FIA’s top touring car competitions were often held as one-off events gathering the best drivers from various national touring car series.

TCR Europe reveals calendar for the 2023 season

tcr world tour kalender 2023

With one event of the 2022 championship remaining, the TCR Europe calendar for the 2023 season has been unveiled. The seven-event calendar will see the series follow the successful format it introduced in 2018, which has delivered five seasons of thrilling Touring Car racing and seen drivers including Josh Files, Mehdi Bennani and Mikel Azcona crowned as TCR Europe Champions.

Just as in 2022, the season will begin at the Autódromo do Algarve in Portugal in late April before heading to Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, at the end of May. In the middle of June, the championship returns to the Hungaroring, which last hosted TCR Europe in 2019, followed by a late July weekend at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet.

September sees a return to the Red Bull Ring in Austria which, like Hungary, last hosted the series in 2019. The final events of the season will then be held at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Paulo Ferreira, the TCR Europe Promoter, commented:  “We are all looking forward to another great year in TCR Europe in 2023 and releasing the calendar now means our existing teams and those thinking of joining us can start to make firm plans. We have become known for offering a great calendar that visits some of Europe’s most iconic racing circuits. There will also be some more news to come about the technology we plan to introduce for next year.”

2023 TCR Europe calendar 28/30 April – Autódromo do Algarve, Portugal 26/28 May – Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium 16/18 June – Hungaroring, Hungary 21/23 July – Circuit Paul Ricard, France 8/10 September – Red Bull Ring, Austria (TBC) 22/24 September – Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Italy 20/22 October – Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain

Komplet kalender:

20-21. maj: Åbningsløbet Jyllandsringen 17-18. juni: Sommerløbet, Ring Djursland 8-9. juli: Västkustloppet Falkenberg, Sverige 4-6. august: Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix 19-20. august: Grand Prix Danmark, Jyllandsringen 16. september: Night Race, Padborg Park 30. september-1. oktober: Finaleløbet, Jyllandsringen

Vallelunga confirmed for third round of 2023 TCR World Tour

Antti Rammo, ALM Motorsport, Honda Civic Type-R FK7 TCR

Vallelunga in Italy will host the third round of the 2023 TCR World Tour, after Italy’s National Sporting Authority ACI struck a deal with global TCR rights holder WSC Group.

The event will take place at the circuit near Rome on 9 – 11 June, as part of the same racing weekend as the third round of the TCR Italy championship.

The event will thus be promoted and organised by ACI Vallelunga and ACI Sport. 18 cars from the TCR Italy regulars will be allowed to take part in the races which are part of the TCR World Tour.

Last year, TCR Italy averaged an impressive grid size of 33 competitors, meaning if a similar series entry signs up for 2023, several drivers are likely to miss the cut.

The 2023 TCR World Tour will get underway in tandem with TCR Europe, the opening round taking place at Portimão in Portugal on 29 – 30 April, followed by the second event at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in May.

Other events already confirmed for this year’s TCR World Tour are at the Hungaroring in Hungary and Mount Panorama in Bathurst, Australia.

“We are delighted that Vallelunga joins the list of the venues that will receive the TCR World Tour in its maiden season,” said Marcello Lotti, President of WSC.

“We have excellent relationship with both ACI Sport and the circuit, and we thank them for their enthusiastic cooperation in bringing TCR World Tour to Italy.

“The track layout is one of those that suits better to touring car competition and one of the most demanding in terms of cars’ set up and driving skills, which always results in exciting races and lots of fun for the spectators.”

Marco Rogano, CEO ACI Sport, is pleased to see ACI deepening its cooperation with WSC.

“We are very proud to welcome the new-born TCR World Tour within the frame of the ACI Racing Weekends,” said Rogano.

“During the latest years, ACI Sport has done its utmost to help TCR competition growing at national level, achieving stunning results.

“We are happy to strengthen our bounds with the WSC Group giving our drivers the opportunity to compete in a world-level event.

“ACI Sport and Vallelunga have immediately started working to make this event possible and postponed the TCR Italy’s event to the mid of October.”

Alfredo Scala, CEO Autodromo Vallelunga added: “We have always reckoned that Vallelunga suits specially to touring cars.

“Here, the best cars and bravest drivers have faced each-others in exciting battles. This belief of ours is confirmed by the inclusion of Vallelunga in the calendar of the inaugural season of the TCR World Tour that will add spice to the weekend we organise together with ACI Sport.

“Now we start to work for welcoming the TCR World Tour competitors and put them in the position to thrill the crowd.”
