As America, the perennial classic-rock favorite, hits the road in 2024, they're celebrating their 54th Anniversary with their powerful performances. America met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song "A Horse With No Name." America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single. Fifty plus years later, these friends are still making music, touring the world and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound.

America's journey has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes, which also include "I Need You," "Ventura Highway," "Don't Cross The River," "Tin Man," "Lonely People," and "Sister Golden Hair" were cornerstones of 1970's Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of melodic pop rock and folk-jazz elements, slinky Latin-leaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with other more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics.

America's albums--six certified gold and/or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales--displayed a fuller range of the trio's talents than did their singles. Their material encompassed an ambitious artistic swath; from effects-laden rockers to oddball medleys to soul-bearing ballads, America displayed a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles as wide-open as the great American plains.

Enjoying massive success early in their career, America earned their stripes as musical soldiers on the battlefield amidst the excess, craziness and chaos of the 70's. The trio won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1972 and began working with George Martin and Geoff Emerick in 1974. This successful team went on to record seven albums and several Top Ten hits, including "Tin Man," "Sister Golden Hair" and "Lonely People."

By the mid-70s, inter-band conflicts combined with an exhaustive touring and recording schedule exacted its toll on the group. With Peek's departure from the fold in 1977, the band rose to the challenge and carried ono. Shifts in sound and direction, changes in producers and managers, and a renewed dedication to the craft of songwriting helped rocket America to the upper reaches of the pop charts in 1982 with their smash single, "You Can Do Magic." During this tumultuous time in their career, the band immersed themselves in their craft, infusing a newfound maturity into their rich body of work. Their growth as singers, songwriters and musicians has continued into the present day as illustrated by landmark releases such as 2000's Highway 3-disc box set, 2002's Holiday Harmony, an album comprised of seasonal classics and live showcases, 2007's Here & Now, 2009's Live In Concert: Wildwood Springs, 2011's Back Pages, and 2015's Lost And Found and America: Archives Vol. 1.

In 2020, the band released their ultimate 8-disc anniversary box set, Half Century (America Records), and streamed their concert special America--Live at the London Palladium for the very first time (it is commercially available as a DVD and CD). 2020 also saw the release of the book America, the Band, An Authorized Biography by journalist Jude Warne. She weaves original interviews with the band and many others into a dynamic cultural history of America, the band, and America, the nation. Billy Bob Thornton wrote the foreword.

From their formative years, America has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures, America's audiences continue to grow, comprising a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group's enduring appeal.

America's Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell sing and play guitar together onstage.

In 2023, you can finally hear “Sister Golden Hair,” “A Horse With No Name” and “Ventura Highway” and “Lonely People” live.

From Feb. 3 through Aug. 26, classic rock icons America will play 32 huge concerts all over, well, North America.

And if you’re in New Jersey, you’re in luck this year.

Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley’s America have five gigs lined up in the Garden State over the next few months.

First, the duo will perform back-to-back nights at Collingswood’s Scottish Rite Auditorium on Feb. 17 and Feb. 18 . From there, they’ll swing into New Brunswick’s State Theatre on March 3, Englewood’s Bergen Performing Arts Center on March 4 and finally Atlantic City’s Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort on June 10.

They’ll also be at Rochester, NY’s Kodak Center on March 11.

Not too shabby for a band that’s been together for 53 years and won the Grammy for Best New Artist way back in 1973.

However, if you follow America’s Instagram , it appears that the 70-year-old rockers haven’t lost a step at their live shows either.

They’re still rocking as hard as ever.

Plus, as a cherry on top of that, we’re happy to report that tickets are fairly inexpensive too.

At the time of publication, we wound some seats that were going for as low as $37 before fees on Vivid Seats.

All prices are subject to fluctuation.

Want to find the right show for you?

Keep reading — we’ve got everything you need to know about America’s upcoming tour below.

America 2023 tour dates

Bunnell, Beckley and the rest of America have big shows all winter, spring and summer .

Just a few of the biggest shows on their itinerary include dates in Canton (March 16), Honolulu (April 15), Kansas City (June 2), Milwaukee (July 12) and Detroit (July 14).

The fun comes to an end on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Los Angeles’ YouTube Theater .

A complete calendar including all America tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

America set list

Even the most casual America fan knows the band will play their aforementioned greatest hits.

What else is on the band’s 21-song set list though?

Setlist.fm reports that America often opens with “Tin Man” and plays original cuts like “Don’t Cross The River,” “Daisy Jane” and “Greenhouse” among many other classics.

It also appears that they mix in a few classic rock staples from The Beatles, The Mamas & the Papas and Russ Ballard as well.

For those that want to dig deeper, we recommend checking out the band’s exhaustive setlist.fm page which has records of what tracks America played live at shows dating back to their early days in London.

America band member background

Fun fact: 1/2 of America isn’t American born — singer and guitarist Dewey Bunnell was actually born in Yorkshire, England to an American serviceman father and his English wife.

As for Gerry Beckley, he was also born to an American father and English mother. The only difference is he originally hails from Forth Worth, TX.

Bunnell and Beckley ended up forming the band with fellow founding member Dan Peek — who passed away in 2011 — in the late 1960s when the three attended London Central High School in Bushey Hall in north west London.

Classic rockers on tour in 2023

Many 70s rock stars are now in their 70s and show no signs of slowing down.

In fact, dozens of the biggest names from the pre-disco era are still going strong and will perform at arenas and stadiums all year long.

Here are just five of our favorite acts you won’t want to miss when they come to a city near you.

•  Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

•  Billy Joel with Stevie Nicks

•  Ringo Starr

•  Dead and Company

•  The Eagles

British folk-rock trio, America, came into prominence in the 1970s, following their debut hit single, "A Horse with No Name," channeling the likes of Neil Young and the Everly Brothers into their music.

Formed by vocalists/guitarists Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Greg Beckley, America gained several top ten hits with their soft, lilting melodies and gentle harmonies that floated over their folk-tinged soft rock. The band gained their first exposure after landing a contract with Jeff Dexter, promotor for the Roundhouse concert venue in london, securing the trio high profile support slots at the venue. Soon they were in the studio, recording their debut album by 1970.

With their debut single, America had a hit on their hands, with "A Horse With No Name" becoming a number three hit in the UK in 1972. Their self-titled debut album equally charted well, peaking at number 14. Revved up by their success in the UK, America soon set their sights on conquering the US, supporting the Everly Brothers on their national tour. Their single was then released in the US, becoming a number one hit, establishing the band across the pond. Their second single, "I Need You" and third single "Ventura Highway" became top ten hits, proving the band can produce consistently quality music. These initial successes were acknowledged by the Grammy Awards, receiving an award for "Best New Artist" in 1972.

Their second album, "homecoming," released in January 1973, failed to maintain the momentum of their previous records, unable to break into the top ten of the American charts. However, their next record, this time aided by producer George Martin, sent them back to fame, with "Holiday" peaking at number three and featuring the hit singles, "Tin Man" and "Lonely People." They gained their second number one hit with the single, "Sister Golden Hair," from the 1975 album, "Hearts," releasing a greatest hits album that same year which sold over four million copies.

The latter half of the decade saw popularity for America begin to wane, although they still released a Gold-certified record, "Hideaway," in 1976 and had a handful of top 40 hits through to the mid-1980s. Entering the new millennium, the trio released a set of live albums as well as the encompassing, extensive box set, "Highway," which covered the whole of their career to that point. They were brought back to the studio by longtime fans, Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins, recording their 2007 album, "Here & Now." The album featured guest artists who had been inspired by America, including Ryan Adams and Nada Surf.

Sadly in 2011, Dan Peek died at the age of 60. The band's legacy and influence was acknowledged through their indictment to the Vocal Group oHall of Fame, as well as receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Live reviews

America is a band I had the privilege of seeing several times back in the seventies. I was in high school when they released " A horse with no name". I saw them at an outdoor arena with a small amount of actual seats but with a Huge grassy area for seating. The Summer of Love (1969) was not that far in the past and a lot of folks were smoking pot on the lawn and just relaxing and having a good time.

Folk music was still pretty popular at the time and although America was not exactly a "Folk" band; they were a kinda of early "Folk/Rock" band. Their mix of acoustic guitars was one of the best parts of the performance. Their vocals are amazing. To this day;forty some years later; I still like to hear their music.

I saw them not long after their debut album came out so they did not have as many songs as they did later in their career. I caught them at another venue some years later and they had a much fuller set list with several "hit" songs. Most of the folks in the audience really enjoyed the show...as did I! The crowd all sand along when they played "Horse with no name". Most venues do not allow drinking these days (let alone "smoking") so the crowd was not quite as laid back. Still...many in the audience knew the lyrics and sang along.

Report as inappropriate

It was great to hear the old songs again but not sure this was the right venue. Very reserved performance. It was more of a medley of their biggest hits rather than a concert. A couple of times they let their guard down and jammed a little but for the most part they played 4/5ths of each hit and moved on to the next song quickly. It was very obvious they were on the clock. Brought back some great memories though so all in all not a total bust.

Saw them in Dallas and so glad that I did! Brought back so many good memories of high school. They sounded great, it was an awesome outdoor venue and the perfect night. Looking forward to seeing them again soon!

It was a GREAT show! They played all of their hits and more. WOW! I never realized what rockers they really are until last night. Go see THEM! I hope they keep on playing another 50 years.

AMERICA ROLLS OUT INITIAL 2023 TOUR DATES

AMERICA ROLLS OUT INITIAL 2023 TOUR DATES

Getty Images

America has rolled out its initial 2023 tour dates. The band, led by co-founders Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell , kicks things off on January 12th in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania at the Luhrs Center and has shows booked through August 19th when they hit Lowell, Massachusetts' Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

America is known for playing a high-octane hit-filled show, and Gerry Beckley told us that they've never underestimated the importance of America's core fanbase: “We have the most loyal fans; I think you'll find that across the board, no matter who you tap in to, if you go to a lot of these classic acts — I mean, we have people come 20, 30 times a year. There isn't millions of them, but there's enough to fill 100 shows a year. We go all over the planet.”

We asked Dewey Bunnell if after all these years working with Gerry Beckley he ever thinks of it almost like a marriage: “People say that, of course, yeah, and Gerry and I have had a few marriages that didn't last as long, but nevertheless, we've worked together since we were teenagers — y'know, we really went to high school together. Then, once we got established, made the first albums, had some success, moved to California — then you set up your own lives a little. You know where the areas are in your lives that you want to keep private and you know where you can blend your work with your lives.”

"I think that the ingredients of the America sound are the basic fundamentals that translate internationally," explains Beckley. "The Italians are huge fans of dance music, but they also love a ballad--they're romantic at heart. It's the same in the Far East. A lot of times in these countries, we see people singing along, and they don't really know what the words mean. Music is truly the international language."

America - The Band at Texas Trust CU Theatre

Grammy Award-winning British-American band America has been creating unprecedented hits since the ‘70s. The band has conquered the airwaves during its prime with incredible sensations, like “A Horse With No Name,” “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Lonely People,” and many more. Throughout its five-decade career, America has released five number-1 singles in the U.S., 23 highly-acclaimed studio albums, and 47 singles, two of which topped the Billboard Hot 100. The band has sold more than 11 million albums worldwide. In 1973, the band won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and received a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Group. In 2006, America was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame six years later.

In 1972, the band emerged with the single “A Horse with No Name.” The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and entered the charts in 11 other countries. The song, released over five decades ago, has created a cultural impact that remains until this day. The song has been used in a Breaking Bad episode. In 2009, a Michael Jackson single, “A Place with No Name,” was released posthumously. The song is a reference to the original American song, and the melody closely resembles 1972 single. This song was well-received by America, and members have expressed their gratitude and honor in having their single be used as a reference by the king of pop.

When America, the perennial classic-rock favorite, hits the road in 2023, they’ll celebrate their 53th Anniversary with their powerful performances. Founding members Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former band mate, the late Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name.” America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single. Concert Review/Interview: America at Lowell Memorial Auditorium

By Jason M. Rubin

In Lowell, America played to a packed, enthusiastic, Centrum Silver-popping crowd who sang along with the band’s impressively deep roster of hits.

the band america tour 2023

The latest version of America in action, live in concert. Photo: Christie Goodwin.

The enjoyable America concert at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium was nearing its end. The band launched into “Sandman” with a heaviness and power most rock fans would not expect of America, those soft-rock superstars of the ‘70s. Now on their 50th anniversary tour (half a century ago this week, their debut album and the single “Horse With No Name” both sat at #1 on the Billboard charts), America had energy to spare and a hot band of young bucks behind them. As they wailed on “Sandman,” I had one thought on my mind: “Damn, if I closed my eyes this could be the Foo Fighters.”

At the very moment I made this connection, though I didn’t learn the news until I got home, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was dying or already dead.

That terrible coincidence aside, America acquitted itself quite well in concert. Playing to a packed, enthusiastic, Centrum Silver-popping crowd who sang along with an impressively deep roster of hits, the band played every song on its multi-platinum greatest hits album from 1975.  (With the exception of “Muskrat Love,” a song choice they likely regret.) They also played their 1982 comeback hit, “You Can Do Magic,” and a selection of album cuts from their heyday, as well as songs from the ’80s, ‘90s, and ‘00s that are less well known but no less appreciated by the adoring crowd. Two covers were added, each with some context given: “Eleanor Rigby” by the Beatles, in recognition of the fact that George Martin produced seven consecutive America albums starting in 1974; and “California Dreamin’” by the Mamas and the Papas, representative of the type of bands that were big and who influenced them when they first got together in the late ‘60s.

For those who don’t know, America these days comprises original members Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley. Third original member Dan Peek left the band in 1977 to pursue a solo career as a Christian music artist. He died in 2011. Three of Peek’s contributions to their repertoire were represented in the set list: “Don’t Cross the River,” “Woman Tonight,” and “Lonely People.”

In spite of their enormous success and longevity, America is dismissed in some quarters as being the quintessential white hippie band, a purveyor  of mellow sounds that evoke the days of free love and bell bottoms. The band’s signature song, “Horse With No Name,” is often chided for its banal lyrics (“the heat was hot” and why the hell doesn’t the horse have a name?). The opening to “Ventura Highway” was nicked to serve as the theme music of the Saturday Night Live recurring skit, “The Californians.” And then there’s the aforementioned “Muskrat Love.” But there’s no denying that “Ventura Highway,” “Sister Golden Hair,” and “Lonely People” — among many, many others, including deep cuts this writer wished they had played — are great songs, well written, well played, and well sung.

In fact, their voices are as strong as ever, and are bolstered by their three-piece band, all of whom offered harmonious background vocals (the drummer sang lead on Peek’s “Don’t Cross the River”). Additionally, they know their way around their instruments. Beckley, in particular, ripped off a number of tasty solos on both acoustic and electric guitar, and played piano as well. A week prior to the concert, I spoke with Beckley about the band’s long career.

Arts Fuse: Your song “Remembering” includes the line that you aren’t “the kind who likes remembering.” Still, what do you recall from those first recording sessions in March 1971? Did you guys have a sense of what your sound was and how unique it would be?

the band america tour 2023

Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America. Photo: courtesy of the artists.

Gerry Beckley : We had been playing live together for several months when we went in to make the first record so there were not a lot of surprises. As a group, though, we hadn’t done enough recording to know exactly what we were going to get in terms of results. But we had a great producer in Ken Scott and I do remember the sessions went very smoothly.

AF: At any time during the pandemic, with shows being cancelled and having to quarantine, did you ever think that this could — or should — be the end of your career as public performers?

Beckley : This is a dynamic and a challenge that the whole world has had to face. We were already in the middle of our 50-year celebration, and then we had a year of shows postponed. It’s great to be back on stage and playing for people again, and I think people are ready to go out and see live music again.

AF: Regardless of which of the three of you was the composer, you can tell an America song by the sound and the style. Did you guys talk a lot about the craft of songwriting in the early years?

Beckley : I think structure is important in any art form. We were students of all the great hit records of our childhood. There are certain things that make a song work — which is to say there are rules of songwriting but you also need to know when and how to break the rules. For example, every song doesn’t need a bridge. The drums don’t have to come in right at the start. Dewey and I are writers and we write what’s in our hearts and minds.

AF: Over the course of 50 years we’ve seen so many styles of music come and go, but America has never compromised, never did a disco album, for example, never went punk or tried to rap. What is it about America’s music that makes it so timeless?

Beckley : We know where we’re heading when we approach each project, and we know what our strengths are. After 50 years, we’re lucky to have so many records to look back on. Now, not all of them are winners. But overall we’re proud of what we have done and that we kept the thing on the tracks. I do think our shows are better than ever.

Jason M. Rubin has been a professional writer for more than 35 years, the last 20 as senior creative associate at Libretto Inc., a Boston-based strategic communications agency where he has won awards for his copywriting. He has written for Arts Fuse since 2012. Jason’s first novel, The Grave & The Gay , based on a 17th-century English folk ballad, was published in September 2012. His current book, Ancient Tales Newly Told , released in March 2019, includes an updated version of his first novel along with a new work of historical fiction, King of Kings , about King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Jason is a member of the New England Indie Authors Collective and holds a BA in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Really? Centrum Silver popping? That’s pretty rude! They are older then most of the audience! It was a great show and it was a good mix of ALL ages.

Was a great concert. The auditorium was packed with young and old alike. They played all of their great hits along with a Beatle’s song and an Al Green song. Great night out.

Adele performs onstage during the "Weekends with Adele" Residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Adele: Weekends with Adele at the Colosseum, Las Vegas

Adele’s new residency at the Colosseum is the hottest ticket in Las Vegas – and for good reason. The singer/songwriter is at the top of her game in a new production featuring her golden voice plus plenty of Vegas spectacle. The 20-song set list compiles her most popular hits, including a most appropriate opening of “Hello,” as well as such instant classics as “Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Skyfall.” This residency is the rare chance to see the megawatt performer in a smaller venue – while there are 4000 seats, this is positively intimate compared to the large arenas she has played in the past.

Where to get tickets: The entire run of Weekends with Adele is sold out. If you’re looking to purchase tickets off a secondary market, make sure the secondary ticket vendor offers a 100% guarantee on your purchase to avoid scams.

Taylor Swift: Eras Tour

With Ticketmaster reporting “historically unprecedented demand,” Taylor Swift’s upcoming Eras Tour is one of the most sought-after concert tickets of just about any era. The highly anticipated 52-night stadium tour is the singer/songwriter’s return to the stage after her 2018 Reputation Tour was the highest-grossing of any in US history. Expect records to be shattered again, with tickets having sold out for the new tour in record time during the presale, alongside reports that demand “could have filled 900 stadiums.” Since Swift has released four albums since she last set out on the road, it’s anyone’s guess as to which songs will make the cut. Still, you can expect a lineup of megahits including “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” to be a part of the set list for certain.

Where to get tickets: Tickets on Ticketmaster were gone in a flash during the presale. Those seeking tickets through a secondary market should stick to a platform like StubHub and VividSeats that offers a 100% money-back guarantee in fraudulent scalping.

Usher performs at the grand opening of Usher: My Way - The Vegas Residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM on July 15, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada

Usher: My Way – The Vegas Residency

Legendary singer/songwriter Usher is one of the greatest R&B showmen of all time. So there’s no question that his latest Vegas residency spanning his remarkable 20-year music career will be a spectacle of epic proportions. Set to return to the Dolby Live theater at Park MGM for 25 new dates from March through July 2023, Usher’s show will offer a rousing set list including many of his hits, such as “My Way,” “OMG” and “Yeah!” The high-voltage evening features plenty of spectacle, including a supporting cast of 23 dancers, roller skaters and pole dancers.

Where to get tickets: Tickets and premium packages can be booked through Usher’s Vegas Residency website .

Dead & Company: The Final Tour

Spanning more than five decades as the quintessential jam band, Dead & Company will hit the road for one final foray last time this summer. The Dead & Co. ensemble – currently led by original Grateful Dead members Bobby Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, joined by Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and John Mayer – has continued the long legacy of the Grateful Dead by touring for each of the past eight summers. This summer, their final tour will serve as a bittersweet farewell as the band hangs up their guitars and tie-dye after having played more than 2300 concerts as the Grateful Dead. Expect Deadhead groupies from all around the world to descend for many nights of peace, love and happiness.

Where to get tickets: Tickets for Dead & Company’s final tour are available through Ticketmaster .

Singer Marc Anthony performs onstage during the VIVIENDO Tour, Inglewood, California, USA

Eraserheads announce North America tour this May

Following their reunion last December, the Eraserheads will perform nine shows across North America

Filipino rock icons Eraserheads have announced a nine-show North America tour kicking off this May.

  • READ MORE: Eraserheads’ ‘Huling El Bimbo’ reunion: Pinoy rock vets play up punk spirit and wistful aches in epic set

Following the band’s long-awaited reunion in December, the band have taken to social media to announce the upcoming North America tour, which will see them perform in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, New York, Vancouver, Toronto and more.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Eraserheads Huling El Bimbo Concert 2022 (@hulingelbimbo2022)

Ticketing and venue details have yet to be announced, with the band teasing the possible addition of more shows.

The North America tour announcement comes over a month after Eraserheads staged their grand return at the SMDC Festival Grounds at Parañaque City on December 22.

The show, which drew in more than 75,000 fans, saw Ely Buendia, lead guitarist Marcus Adoro, bassist Buddy Zabala and drummer Raymund Marasigan reunite for their third and (according to promoters) very last show in the Philippines.

The reunion concert garnered a five-star review from NME’s Khyne Palumar who wrote: “In the end, it’s not about the flashy showmanship or the dazzling pyrotechnics. It’s about how much the Eraserheads’ music mattered to fans who moshed, danced, and feverishly howled their lyrics back at the band, lapping up every second they had with the quartet.”

The dates for Eraserheads’ Huling El Bimbo 2023 World Tour are:

Live Nation Strikes Up the Band in Washington

Legal hot water and potential legislative reforms have triggered millions of dollars in lobbyist spending and campaign donations.

In recent years, Live Nation has faced bipartisan condemnation for controlling ticketing markets and adding junk fees to the cost of concerts and other live events.

The vast majority of Americans who pay no attention to the social event of the year in Washington, last weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, probably also don’t know that a weeklong series of parties have sprung up around that event, bringing together traditional media, policymakers, lobbyists, and other facets of the Capitol blob. D.C. tipsheet Axios, for example, hosted not one but two events during Correspondents’ Dinner week.

Axios’s partner was Live Nation, the ticketing and entertainment giant that is currently under investigation at the Justice Department for antitrust violations. Axios held a co-branded event at the OAS Building last Thursday, and a second one at the National Building Museum last Friday, where Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino was listed as a co-host, along with Axios co-founders Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen, and Roy Schwartz. Jelly Roll played a set at the Thursday night event; Live Nation produces his tours .

A photo of the cocktail napkins at one of the events, obtained by the Prospect , shows that the lobbying even extended to the party’s accessories: “Fans paid an average of $38 for an entry-level US concert ticket in 2023,” the napkin reads. The napkin does not say whether these were Live Nation concerts exclusively.

Dayen-Live Nation 043024 2.jpg

Axios hasn’t responded to the Prospect ’s questions about the events. ( UPDATE : Other napkins contained various defenses of Live Nation as well.)

Live Nation’s dalliance with insider media culture is just one of the ways the company is building up its Washington defenses, not only as the risk of a monopolization lawsuit looms, but as Congress debates bipartisan bills aimed at ticketing reform. Live Nation spent $4.7 million in federal lobbying just between 2021 and 2023, and its total number of lobbyists went from just four in 2016 to 37 last year, according to federal disclosures.

The menagerie of Live Nation lobbyists includes two former members of Congress and the ex-chief of staff to Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who has been a vociferous critic of Live Nation and has her own bill aimed at the ticketing market.

Live Nation is also a force in campaign contributions, with $168,750 donated thus far in the 2024 cycle by individuals associated with the company, and nearly $73,000 in direct corporate PAC contributions since 2021. And it is an active member of “reform” coalitions that focus on everything wrong with ticketing except Live Nation’s own monopoly power.

It’s unclear whether this blitz will save Live Nation from legal or legislative risk. But it follows a familiar playbook that Big Tech platforms used two years ago to successfully defeat bipartisan measures to encroach on their power. And while Big Tech may have more money and influence, at least Live Nation can get Jelly Roll.

AFTER LIVE NATION AND TICKETMASTER MERGED IN 2010 , the company’s imprint in Washington drifted. As recently as 2018, it spent a paltry $240,000 on federal lobbying, according to Open Secrets .

But in recent years, Live Nation has faced bipartisan condemnation for controlling ticketing markets and adding junk fees to the cost of concerts and other live events. Live Nation has allegedly forced venues to use its ticketing services to book major acts. It also manages and promotes thousands of artists and has ramped up its purchasing of venues; it now operates 64 percent of the top amphitheaters in the country, according to the American Economic Liberties Project, or AELP. (Axios itself recently reported on Live Nation buying up most of the music venues in Des Moines, Iowa.)

The meltdown in ticket sales for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour raised attention to Live Nation in Washington. The company’s extraction of more profits, however, has continued undaunted, partly because it can steer its stable of artists to its owned-and-operated venues, and deny rivals access. A recently released legal filing from 2019 alleges that Live Nation made secret side deals with vendors to raise the cost of putting on concerts, receiving rebates from those vendors while artists, managers, and co-promoters paid more. “Different people want to break up Live Nation for different reasons,” Kevin Erickson of the Future of Music Coalition told the Prospect .

More from David Dayen

Live Nation’s practices have been under Justice Department investigation for months. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier in April that a lawsuit would be filed “in the coming weeks,” related to some or all of these allegations. The Prospect has been told that as many as three cases could be brought, but that the filing is likely weeks away.

The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has also subpoenaed documents from Live Nation as part of an ongoing investigation.

Live Nation has denied these charges. In a blog post in March, Dan Wall, the company’s antitrust attorney and head of corporate affairs, argued that Ticketmaster and Live Nation promoters play no role in pricing live events, and that add-on fees set by venues only reflect minimal charges for ticketing services. (He didn’t mention who owns the venues, or the dynamic of keeping artists, promoters, venues, and ticketing within the Live Nation ecosystem.)

Wall’s blog post likely mirrors the arguments Live Nation is making in Washington behind the scenes. In 2022, lobbying expenses for Live Nation rose to $1.1 million. Last year, they more than doubled , to $2.38 million.

Of the 37 lobbyists at six different outside lobbying firms working for Live Nation over the past year, 25 were former congressional staffers. Another two were previously members of Congress: Ed Whitfield (R-KY), who spent 21 years in the House before resigning in 2016 and joining Farragut Partners , and Mark Pryor (D-AR), a two-term senator from Arkansas who now lobbies with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck .

Jonathan Becker, who served as chief of staff to Sen. Klobuchar from 2010 to 2013, was paid $120,000 to lobby for Live Nation in 2023. Sen. Klobuchar’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Klobuchar has been one of the most outspoken politicians about Live Nation, chairing a hearing in 2023 in the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee and condemning the company as “one big triple monopoly” in an AELP online event in January. But Klobuchar’s bipartisan bill with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), the Fans First Act , is actually supported by Live Nation.

THE FANS FIRST BILL WOULD REQUIRE UP-FRONT DISCLOSURES of the full ticket price, something Live Nation says its Ticketmaster service does already . It would also mandate full refunds for canceled events and create large civil penalties for violations. But much of Fans First aligns with Live Nation’s theory that resellers, not primary markets, cause all the problems in ticketing.

Under Fans First, consumers would be told whether a ticket is being offered by a primary or secondary seller. Speculative selling, where a reseller offers tickets it doesn’t yet have, would be banned, though “concierge” selling that allows fans to pay a broker to get them a ticket would still be allowed. And the BOTS Act, a 2016 law barring the use of computers to game online sales and snatch as many tickets as possible for resellers, would be strengthened.

A large coalition called Fix the Tix has endorsed Fans First; a letter from the group signed by 300 musicians was sent last week . That coalition shares most of Live Nation’s goals in targeting ticketing reforms toward secondary markets. In fact, the initial release of Fix the Tix’s manifesto last year bore a precise resemblance to a Live Nation–led effort called FAIR Ticketing , which released a model bill last February. TicketNews called the Fix the Tix approach “largely a retread of Live Nation’s wishlist.”

Fans First’s ban on speculative selling, expansion of the BOTS Act, and mandate for all-in pricing were all part of the FAIR Ticketing recommendations. Live Nation is actually a ticket reseller too, earning $4.5 billion from the resale market in 2022. But deflecting focus away from itself and onto other companies like StubHub, a company that resells tickets, is clearly a goal.

StubHub has criticized the FAIR Ticketing effort, noting that it neglects “any mention of Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s behavior.” (StubHub and other resellers have built their own “grassroots” coalitions, like Fan Freedom and the Sports Fans Coalition .) Ticketmaster has also been accused of restraining secondary markets by holding back tickets until hours before a show so they cannot be resold.

Lobbying disclosures show that Live Nation has engaged in lobbying on other bills, like the TICKET Act, a more modest version that covers all-in pricing and speculative tickets and has passed committees in the House and Senate , as well as the BOSS and Swift Act, which is more comprehensive on transparency in all ticket pricing. (The bill Live Nation has lobbied on the most is the reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration, which suggests it either wants to insert something into or get something pulled out of that must-pass legislation, which will likely advance before a deadline next week.)

Unfortunately for Live Nation, adding its endorsement to Fans First has if anything slowed down the bill in Congress. Despite the increased lobbying profile, Live Nation’s reputation remains sullied by the Eras Tour debacle and the actually existing cost of tickets.

Live Nation did not respond to a request for comment.

Many artist and consumer groups see Fans First as a step forward, despite Live Nation’s support. But some critics argue that Live Nation has already won by shifting the legislative direction to the contestable terrain of ticketing, and away from the full spectrum of the company’s anti-competitive practices. “Everyone is jumping on the Taylor Swift breakdown and not what people have been talking about for a decade,” said Krista Brown of AELP.

For example, another Klobuchar bill, the Unlock Ticketing Markets Act , which would prevent exclusive contracts between ticketing services and venues, has gotten little traction, while Live Nation–approved bills attacking secondary markets have been moving through Congress.

That said, a DOJ antitrust investigation would confront the structural issues of monopoly power, as Klobuchar noted. “Taking on the issues in ticketing markets is larger than just one bill,” she explained to TicketNews last year .

That’s another reason for Live Nation building a Washington beachhead. Antitrust trials take time, and building sentiment among lawmakers and the press reports they rely upon can make a difference. So Jelly Roll singing to revelers, while seemingly trivial, can lead to numerous letters in support of Live Nation, media reports downplaying its monopoly, and obfuscation of the real issues at play. In addition to a foot-stomping good time.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .

To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons …

ABOUT IMAGINE DRAGONS:

Imagine Dragons continue to redefine rock in the 21 st century. Filling stadiums, crafting cloud-rattling anthems, and breaking records at every turn, diamond-certified GRAMMY® Award-winning Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons occupy rarified air as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Tallying cumulative sales of 74 million album equivalents, 65 million digital songs, and over 160 billion streams, they stand out as “the only band in history to earn four RIAA Diamond singles , ” namely “Radioactive” (16x-platinum), “Believer” (13x-platinum), “Thunder” (12x-platinum) and “Demons” (11x-platinum). Since emerging in 2009, they’ve scored five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Night Visions [2012] (7x-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Smoke+Mirrors [2015] (platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Evolve [2017] (triple-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Origins [2018] (platinum)(KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), and Mercury – Act 1 [2021]( KIDinaKORNER/Interscope). With the release of Mercury – Act 2 (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope) in 2022, they completed their first double-album opus produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. The hit single “Bones,” featured on Mercury Act 2, went to number one at Alternative Radio and remains in the Global Top 50 on Spotify. The band’s hit collaboration with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D, “Enemy,” has racked up billions of global streams and landed at #6 on the IFPI Global Singles Chart for 2022. Dominating radio, they remain one of only four bands to ever achieve consecutive Top 5 singles at Alternative radio, and the only band to repeat this feat. Most recently, Imagine Dragons made history on Spotify, as “Bad Liar” became their 10th song to surpass 1 billion streams. The band now holds the crown for the group with most billion-plus streamed songs, becoming the first in the platform’s history to have ten songs reach this milestone. Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons’ music videos for hits “Thunder” and “Believer” have garnered an astounding 2 billion YouTube views, while videos for “Radioactive” and “Demons” have surpassed over 1 billion views.  They’ve collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Wiz Khalifa to Avicii and film composer Hans Zimmer. Giving back, they’ve raised millions for various causes, including their pediatric cancer charity the Tyler Robinson Foundation, and frontman Dan Reynolds’ LOVELOUD Foundation and festival in support of LGBTQ+ youth. In 2022, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky named them ambassadors for UNITED 24, which benefits humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Imagine Dragons earned an impressive four nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards including “Favorite Pop Duo or Group,” “Favorite Rock Artist,” “Favorite Rock Album” and “Favorite Rock Song.” The band was also nominated for “Group of 2022” for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Most recently, they received an MTV VMA nomination for “Video For Good” for their acclaimed “Crushed” music video.
