The National Stud - 2023 Annual

Page 1

The music very much plays on here at the National Stud where we are delighted to have welcomed the seven time Group 1 winner to our stallion roster. A modern racing icon, Stradivarius demonstrated incredible soundness and consistency to compete at the highest level for seven years. His tremendous turn of foot and versatility to win from distances of 1 mile to 2.5 miles make him a truly unique athlete and to be able to give breeders the opportunity to access such incredible talent.

2022 has proved another extremely busy year with over 500 mares covered and 100 foals born. Advertise and Aclaim moved home to Manton Park Stud this year. We are delighted to have launched the careers of two such exciting young stallions and it has been very rewarding for the whole team to see what a strong start both Aclaim and Advertise have made to their stud careers. They both have bright futures ahead of them and we wish them every success for the future.

New recruit Lope Y Fernandez proved very popular with breeders and demonstrated exceptional fertility statistics in his first year. The only son of Lope De Vega standing in the UK, he covered a large book of exceptional mares including siblings to the likes of Showcasing, Kodi Bear and Subjectivist.

Time Test covered his largest book of mares to date following his stellar first crop giving him the title ‘Leading First Season Sire by Black Type winners’. His flag bearers on the track in 2022 included Group 2 Beresford Stakes winner CRYPTO FORCE and Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes winner ROCCHIGIANI. Group 1 performer Sunset Shiraz missed the beginning of the season due to injury but bounced back to form with a promising second to Classic performer Toy at Naas. Time Test is currently covering a quality book of mares at Little Avondale Stud in New Zealand and returns to Newmarket in mid-December. The future looks extremely bright for him with a Classic prospect for next year in CRYPTO FORCE, and over 460 mares covered in the last three seasons.

the national stud tour

Rajasinghe had his first runners hitting the track this year and held a strike rate of 83% winners to runners for almost three months. He is currently sitting third on the first season sire ratings by winners to runners. His leading light has been Listed placed Waiting All Night who represented his sire in the Royal Ascot Gr.2 Coventry Stakes, the race that cemented his own position as a leading sprinter of his generation. Fittingly, this colt is a homebred for Rajasinghe’s owner Phil Cunningham, and we are delighted to see Phil reaping the rewards of supporting his stallion so strongly.

In July, we were delighted to announce Joe Bradley’s appointment as Head of Bloodstock. A Godolphin Flying Start graduate who has also worked in various Studs across Great Britain and New Zealand, Joe brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion for the industry.

We also welcomed Abbie Taylor as Education Manager in April and she has already made a significant impact on the development of the Education Programme. Our Diploma students graduated in June, going on to work at Taylor Made and WinStar in Kentucky, Watership Down Cheveley Park and Darley in the UK among others. The TBA Entry to Stud Employment programme continues to provide a recruitment pipeline for stud staff, and we are looking at how we can increase numbers through this in 2023.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Joe Grimwade for his significant contribution in 2022, it was wonderful for the whole team to work alongside one of our industry’s greatest stud managers during this season. Also a huge thank you to our clients – both new and longstanding, we look forward to working with you over the coming months and wish you a very successful season in 2023.

I am really excited about breeding to Lope Y Fernandez. If his stock are going to be as good looking and tenacious as he was as a racehorse, I think the future is looking very bright for him.

THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF CARE

Whatever the horse, our aims are simple: the highest possible standard of care and first class communication, all at a cost that is fair

Our team work alongside some of the industry’s most well respected vets and farriers; making sure that you and your horse receive the best possible standard of care at every stage of the process.

Regardless of whether your horse is resident with us on a permanent basis, or boarding for just a short period of time, you will be updated regularly and owners are always welcome to visit.

Our foaling boxes are purpose built to cater for mares and their new-born foals.

Mares are cared for 24 hours a day with a member of our experienced staff always on hand. Every foal is given a thorough new-born exam by our vets. After foaling we’ll send you a detailed foaling report, and photos of your new arrival taken during the first 48 hours after birth will follow.

Please note: The National Stud will not accept mares for foaling unless they are fully up to date with EHV vaccinations.

We welcome seasonal boarders visiting our own stallions or other Newmarket based stallions.

Our vets are on site every day during the breeding season, so your mare is seen as and when she needs to be.

When she’s ready to be covered we take care of booking transport and make sure that all of the necessary paperwork is in order.

Horses resident with us on a permanent basis benefit from a preferential boarding rate and are cared for year round by our team of highly skilled stud staff.

The whole process is taken care of for you, from regular farrier and worming routines, to registrations and vaccinations.

The importance of rest and recuperation for our equine athletes cannot be undervalued in the demanding environment of today’s racing industry, so it is no surprise that our spelling facilities continue to go from strength to strength.

Since opening our doors to spellers in 2009 we have gained the support of an incredibly loyal group of owners and trainers who continue to entrust us with some of their stables’ highest profile residents. Equine superstars such as this year’s 1000 Guineas winner Cachet, four-time Group winner Regal Reality, five-time Group placed Dragon Symbol, this year’s Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes runner-up Spycatcher and many more have all benefited from time spent in our speller barn.

As with all of our boarding facilities, we tailor our services to meet your needs. Our spelling yard can accommodate every individual’s requirements, providing cage, nursery or small paddock turnout, as well as walker and lunge ring exercise if needed.

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

Starting with the Diploma in Stud Practice and Management in 1986, the Education programme has evolved over the years and now spans the full spectrum – from those with little or no experience with Thoroughbreds, to short courses and learning programmes for those already working at a senior level in the industry. All courses are tailored to provide learners with the industry knowledge and practical training required for a successful career in their chosen field.

The qualifications offered are accredited by the industry’s awarding body 1st4Sport. In addition to residential and short courses, we offer a range of qualifications which can be delivered and assessed in the workplace.

The Wavertree Education Trust

The Alborada Trust

The EB Moller Trust

The Gerald Leigh Charitable Trust

The Tim Dunlop Memorial Trust

The John Pearce Foundation

The National Stud E2SE course gave me the basic grounding to succeed in the Thoroughbred breeding industry and helped me get my placement at Cheveley Park Stud where I continue to learn every day. I’ve made many great friends for life and realised a dream. For anyone that is contemplating applying, do it.

The Diploma course was a wonderful experience for me, I learned so much about breeding but also about the horseracing industry.

EMERIC GUETIN

2021 Diploma Graduate

The son of a wealthy brewer who himself continued to run the family business for over 20 years, Hall Walker was also a soldier, politician, amateur jockey and polo player, and had enjoyed considerable success as a breeder prior to gifting his stock to the government. Hall Walker was a member of The Jockey Club (elected in 1919), and after a lengthy political career he became Lord Wavertree in 1919.

In October of 1915 Colonel Walker approached the British Government with a proposal designed to do something to remedy the country’s dangerous shortage of Thoroughbred stallions to breed cavalry remounts, as well as the stock to produce future champions of the turf.

He put forward the idea that they should buy his 1100 acre estate in Tully, Ireland, and in return he would provide his bloodstock as a gift to the British nation.

The idea was met with a lukewarm response, and was initially rejected. However, after influential figures with ties to both racing and politics rallied to persuade the government, it was decided to accept the proposal.

With his idea initially having been dismissed, on the morning of 2nd December 1915 Hall Walker was at Tattersalls in London for the dispersal of his stock when he received a telegram stating that the British Government had agreed to his proposal and would buy the land in Ireland. He immediately withdrew his stock from the sale; a decision which founded the business that we still run today. Under its new ownership, and first Manager in Captain Henry Greer, the stud continued producing high class staying stock with great success.

One of the most notable early successes was in breeding the great Blandford, foaled in 1919 out of Blanche. He ran only four times in his racing career and won the Prince of Wales’ Stakes, however it was his stud career in which Blandford made his mark. Three times Champion Sire he was one of the most important Classic sires of the 20th century, siring 11 Classic winners, and he remains one of only four stallions to have sired four Derby winners.

1942 was another standout year in our history, when under the relatively new management of Peter Burrell, The National Stud was responsible for breeding the winners of four of that year’s Classics. Sun Chariot won the Fillies’ Triple Crown, and Big Game won the 2000 Guineas; a phenomenal achievement for one stud to achieve in the same year.

The land in Tully transferred to the ownership of the Irish government in 1943, at which time The National Stud moved its stock to Sandley Stud in Dorset, and a further stud at West Grinstead in Sussex.

the national stud tour

The National Stud was founded thanks to the foresight of William Hall Walker, who effectively initiated the inception of the Stud when he donated his bloodstock to the British government.

In 1963 the newly established Levy Board was tasked with running the Stud, and 500 acres in Newmarket was leased from The Jockey Club to become the new home of The National Stud. Peter Burrell is the longest standing director of the Stud to date and was responsible for the layout of the farm and yards as they still are to this day.

the national stud tour

HM The Queen officially opened our current site on 17th of April 1967.

Another significant moment in the Stud’s history came when Paul Mellon’s Derby winner Mill Reef was retired to The National Stud in 1973. Not only an incredible racehorse, Mill Reef went on to become one of the most influential sires of his time, and during his illustrious career at stud sired two Derby winners, Shirley Heights and Reference Point. Further milestones were to come in a more human form when for the first time, in the mid-1970s, public tours of the stud began, and a decade later the Stud’s first full-time training programs started.

The most recent historical shift for The National Stud came in April of 2008, when the farm was acquired by The Jockey Club. As such the Stud derives significant benefit from the fact that The Jockey Club is governed by Royal Charter; its’ commercial operations act solely for the good of British horseracing and its patron is Her Majesty The Queen.

In November 2018, our patron The Queen Consortwas appointed as the first ever patron of The National Stud. Her first official visit was in May 2019, where she planted a tree to mark the re-opening of the newly refurbished Stallion Unit.

the national stud tour

The National Stud is the only Thoroughbred stud in the UK to open its doors to the general public, giving a unique insight into the world of Thoroughbred breeding.

Depending on the season and daily activities on the Stud, visitors can expect to see mares with their young foals in the paddocks, yearlings and stallions, all in the truly beautiful grounds of The National Stud. You will also hear about the history behind the Stud and an overview of the work that goes into producing the future champions of the racetrack from one of our highly knowledgeable guides.

Our resident equine celebrities are firm favourites with all of our visitors, with Grade 1 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere and three-time Group 1 winning sprinter The Tin Man both enjoying their retirements at the stud.

While you are with us you can visit our on-site coffee shop. It is open all year round and sells delicious cakes, sandwiches and hot food with many seasonal specialities to complement the daily menu.

The National Stud Tour is excellent value for money and a great experience even for someone who knows nothing about horses. Our guide was very welcoming and enthusiastic, as well as being knowledgeable. The tour teaches about how the stud goes about breeding and the intricacies involved - you get to meet some of the horses, but quite understandably are not allowed to touch the stallions. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in horses / horse racing.

Excellent experience!

Our tour guide was extremely informative about the history of the National Stud and showed us around the stud to see the stallions and young foals, even letting us see the foals up close. Ending the tour with a visit to see their two retired racehorses was an extra surprise. Feeding a polo to former Gold Cup Champion Lord Windermere & Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner The Tin Man was just one of the highlights of the few days we spent in Newmarket!

Japanese Gardens

The Irish National Stud’s Japanese Gardens, renowned throughout the world and the finest of their kind in Europe, are far more than simply a treat for the eye. They also provide comfort to the soul, achieving exactly the objective that was set out when the gardens were created between 1906 and 1910. Devised by Colonel William Hall Walker, a wealthy Scotsman from a famous brewing family, the gardens were laid out by Japanese master horticulturist Tassa Eida and his son Minoru. Their aim was, through trees, plants, flowers, lawns, rocks and water, to symbolise the ‘Life of Man’.

That plan was executed to perfection and Eida’s legacy is now admired by the 120,000 visitors who soak up the peace of the gardens every year. Very much representative of Japanese gardens from the early 20th century, Eida’s work traces the journey of a soul from oblivion to eternity and portrays the human experience of its embodiment as it journeys by paths of its own choice through life. Birth, childhood, marriage, parenthood, old age, death and the afterlife are all brought to mind as the gardens, a seamless mixture of Eastern and Western cultures, are explored.

St Fiachra’s Garden

St. fiachra’s garden was designed in 1999 by award-winning landscape architect professor martin hallinan.

The garden commemorates St. Fiachra, the patron saint of gardeners. It provides a perfect partner to the Irish National Stud’s Japanese Gardens while, at the same time, opening up a wholly different yet equally satisfying experience. This stunning attraction seeks to capture that which inspired those involved in Ireland’s monastic movement in the 6th and 7th centuries. It does so principally by paying handsome tribute to the Irish landscape in its rawest state.

Rock and water are rulers in a garden rejoicing in the natural beauty of woodland, wetland, waterfalls, lakes and streams. Monastic cells of fissured limestone are surrounded by water while an inner subterranean garden is home to magnificent Waterford Crystal-shaped rocks, ferns and orchids. St. Fiachra’s Garden is the very essence of Ireland’s natural beauty.

The Irish National Stud is also home to over 20 fairies, each with their own chores to complete on the farm. Follow the trial through the enchanting woods (be ‘fairy’ careful) and towards the large paddocks where you’ll see fairy Hattie taking good care of the horses. Along the way look out for all sorts of trees and flowers – Flora is in charge of these, and discover the Buglington Hotel where you might just spot the resident insects.

Buglington Hotel

Buglington Hotel

You may well ask, “What is the point in having a Bug Hotel?” Well, the answer is simple really, a Bug Hotel provides a place of shelter for insects in the cold winter months.

We give shelter to the insects; but why do we want insects anyway? Let’s face it, they just creep and buzz around, annoy everyone and eat plants. That also is quite true; but the main reason we need insects is because they pollinate plants and if we didn’t have them then 80% of all the plants we use for food would disappear. In fact, without pollinators the human race would disappear. Earth without humans!… what a thought! Who’d mind the horses?!

New York Undercover Cast Set to Reunite for National Tour in Honor of Show’s 30th Anniversary (Exclusive)

The beloved police procedural, starring Malik Yoba, Luna Lauren Velez and Michael DeLorenzo, aired on Fox from 1994 to 1999

The cast of New York Undercover is hitting the road!

In PEOPLE's exclusive look at the Monday, April 29 episode of Tamron Hall , Malik Yoba, Luna Lauren Velez and Michael DeLorenzo reveal that the cast of the police drama will be embarking on a tour across the United States in celebration of the show's 30th anniversary.

"We're here not just to talk about the 30-year anniversary, but how we can bring this moment forward," Yoba, 56, explains. "Audiences has never had a chance to have this experience with us so we intend to go on the road as [a] cast."

Jeff Neira/DISNEY

After host Tamron Hall and the audience react with shock, Yoba shares "another iconic" reveal.

"We're going to hit markets across America. We're working with artists that have performed on the show," he continues as the crowd cheers.

New York Undercover aired from Fox from 1994 to 1999. The iconic police procedural followed the story of two undercover detectives, J.C. Williams (Yoba) and Eddie Torres (DeLorenzo). The series included a diverse cast and was one of the first procedurals to cast BIPOC actors in leading roles. It also told realistic storylines that tackles issues from parenting to racism, sexism and drug abuse.

In 2018, Deadline reported that ABC had ordered a pilot for a New York Undercover reboot series.

At the time, the outlet reported that the new series would pick up 20 years after the original show's end. The reboot was to follow detectives Nat Gilmore and Melissa Ortiz and their investigations into the Big Apple's most dangerous criminals from Harlem to Battery Park. Some original cast members were expected to reprise their roles.

The reboot was to be written and executive produced by Dick Wolf, co-creator of the original series, and Ben Watkins.

However, the network scrapped its plans for the revival. Though New York Undercover 's return to television looks unlikely, Deadline reported that the reboot was getting pitched to other networks in 2020.

LOS ANGLES (AP) — Grace Kim opened a four-stroke lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship, shooting a 5-under 66 in tricky afternoon conditions at Wilshire Country Club.

A stroke ahead after an opening 64, Kim had an eagle, four birdies and a bogey to get to 12-under 130. The 23-year-old Australian patiently worked her way around the tree-lined layup, trying not to get frustrated with the bumpy greens.

“I think the less thoughts, the better,” Kim said. “Obviously, during the afternoon round today, we’ve got poa annua greens so just have to stay patient with them. You can kind of see how it can get bumpy, so working with the course and not getting too wrapped up around putts not going in.”

Maja Stark was second after a 69, also in the afternoon.

“I feel like maybe not taking everything so personal because they are a little bit wobbly.” Stark said. “Especially late. Like the whole day pretty much the ball has been wobbling because there has been so many people walking on it.”

The Swede finished second last week in Texas in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her fifth straight victory.

Defending champion Hannah Green of Australia shot a 69 to join Germany’s Esther Henseleit (68) at 6 under. Denmark’s Kristine Pedersen (67) and American Auston Kim (71) were 5 under, and Rose Zhang (69) topped the group at 4 under.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron , shooting 76-72.

She started play Friday on the back nine, rebounding from a bogey on the par-3 12th with the eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie on the par-4 14th. On 13, she hit a 5-wood to 10 feet. She added birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7 on the second nine.

“I think I’ve got to breathe a little bit,” she said. “I did get a little bit nervous on my back nine, so making sure I don’t rush too much and just staying in the present.

Rick caruso says usc's decision to cancel graduation was a great decision, rick caruso usc grad ceremony axe is a good call.

Rick Caruso 's calling USC's decision to nix its graduation ceremony amid a flood of pro-Palestine protests a masterclass in leadership -- something other universities are still scrambling to learn ... so he says.

On "TMZ Live" Friday, Rick -- a member of USC's Board of Trustees -- affirmed students' right to free speech ... but emphasized when expression veers into hate speech and bullying, university administrations must prioritize campus safety above all else.

RC doesn't beat around the bush ... telling us leaders need to show backbone and courage to make tough decisions, even if it means they won't be popular with everyone.

From his vantage point, RC observes a significant failure among many Ivy League schools in maintaining safe and hate speech-free campuses during the recent protests.

But when it comes to USC Prez Carol Folt , Rick has nothing but praise, applauding her stellar job of navigating through choppy waters with finesse.

USC's move to axe the graduation ceremony came Thursday, following backlash sparked by Asna Tabassum 's valedictory address cancellation. Tabassum had faced criticism for her outspoken pro-Palestine stance.

‘Challengers’: Normcore Clothes on Sweaty Bodies

Zendaya breaks hearts in a stylish tennis love triangle.

Zendaya as Tashi sits on a bed with two young men. She wears a pink zip-up terry-cloth jacket and shorts; the men wear shorts and casual shirts. Both are laughing.

By The Styles Desk

This week “Challengers,” Luca Guadagnino’s film about love, lust and tennis, finally hit theaters after being delayed by the actor’s strike last fall. Starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist as racket prodigies reunited by fate and tournaments, with costumes by Jonathan Anderson (designer of Loewe, his own JW Anderson line and many Uniqlo collabs), it is a romp through competitions and clothes. The Styles crew couldn’t help but have feelings.

Vanessa Friedman Aesthetics — clothes, colors, design — have always been important in Luca Guadagnino’s movies, but “Challengers” is the first time he has collaborated with a single fashion designer: Jonathan Anderson. What did you guys think?

Jessica Testa Well, it’s not often you see a major fashion designer step into a film costume designer role.

Guy Trebay JWA is to Luca what Givenchy was to Blake Edwards .

VF I loved the whole pop-art aesthetic of the movie, but I can’t say any of the clothes screamed “JWA” to me. If I hadn’t known he was the designer, I doubt I would have thought of him.

GT Never in a million years.

JT As a designer, he has a really interesting grasp on “normcore,” though usually he’s subverting or perverting it. That doesn’t happen here.

VF You don’t get more normcore than Tashi’s pink terry-cloth warm-up jacket. I would have thought fashion designers would be attracted to film work because it allowed them to express themselves creatively in new ways. But given that Jonathan works across so many brands, it’s hard to know what “Challengers” offered him. Other than a chance to dress three very attractive stars, at least two of whom (Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor) are now Loewe faces. And to hang out with Luca, of course. Is it a branding move — a sort of “these are my creative peeps” kind of thing?

JT I do think “Challengers” will be a cultural hit — if not a box office one — given the amount of chatter (and sexy screenshots) it has generated since its announcement. Not to mention Zendaya’s endless cosplay press tour. So to be affiliated with the spectacle of this film seems like a PR win for anyone.

VF I also expect that part of the, ahem, challenge, in designing the various wardrobes is that given the threesome subtext of the film, you want to see these attractive stars shed their clothes, not put on new ones.

GT And that’s part of an overall sensuality reset, inflected by our experience of Covid and the general social unease with touch.

VF Will we all be wearing dolphin shorts this summer? It’s been a real contrast with what the stars have been wearing on the promotional circuit, which in Zendaya’s case involves a lot more tennis-adjacent storytelling, which I have greatly appreciated. She and Law Roach, her “image architect,” have interpreted “tennis fashion” as broadly as I ever imagined possible.

JT So you’re a fan? It’s been a little divisive, with some people saying the references are a little too on the nose. See the inclusion of actual tennis balls .

VF I liked the Thom Browne a lot, as well as the nods to Althea Gibson , and the Carolina Herrera worn by Venus and Serena Williams in Vogue. I could have skipped the tennis ball green gown . But honestly, I’d rather enjoy the trying than simply see another brand ad in the form of a red-carpet appearance.

JT It’s also interesting that Law has been calling on people to wear tenniscore to their “Challengers” screenings. Talk about someone going beyond the expected parameters of their job. Jonathan Anderson has nothing on this celebrity-stylist turned stylist-celebrity. “Barbie” screenings were full of people wearing pink. I don’t know if people will be as eager to wear tennis skirts and polos.

VF You aren’t going to participate in # TashiMadeMeWearIt ?

JT Maybe as the adult Tashi. Creamy cashmere sweater, a good bob and a big scowl on my face.

GT If Law Roach brings back dolphin shorts and Izod polos, he’s good in my book. The style world could use a little more of a Bjorn Borg vibe.

Iowan beats wind, weather for Lake Erie walleye victory: NE Ohio fishing report

  • D'Arcy Egan | special to cleveland.com

PORT CLINTON, Ohio — A crowded field of 142 pro and co-angler teams raced all around Lake Erie in the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s National Walleye Tour (NWT) opener on April 18-19, but they couldn’t topple the clear favorite, John Hoyer of Keosauqua, Iowa.

Hoyer has been relying on superb sonar skills to find trophy walleye, and to cast to lures to feeding fish. His two-day limit of 10 walleye weighed a whopping 69.13 pounds, beating Hunter Nitti (64.10 pounds) of Rosemount, Minnesota, and Ryan Buddie (64.05 pounds) of Amherst.

The winner of the last three NWT championships, Hoyer added to his impressive winnings by taking home a prize package totaling $116,926 that included a new Ranger 620FS boat. Nitti took home $23,643, while Buddie won $20,645.

What had to be most frustrating for the the field was that despite rough waters, many anglers ran many miles from Port Clinton — including to the Detroit River and the Cleveland shoreline — in search of clean water and walleye eager to bite.

Hoyer did not.

“I found some fairly clean water around the cans, and focused on that,” said Hoyer. Facing gale force winds over two days of practice fishing, Hoyer said he was lucky to find fishable waters and walleye about 10 miles from the Portage River starting line, drifting along the marker buoys off Camp Perry.

Lots of other tournament anglers were trying to copy Hoyer’s Forward Facing Sonar technique that reveals walleye swimming ahead of his Ranger fishing boat, then cast to the biggest fish he can find he marks with his sonar fish-finding unit. His preferred lures included shallow-diving jerk baits and swim baits, a jig matched with a plastic fish body.

National walleye tournaments continue: Lake Erie’s record-setting walleye population makes it a favorite place to host big walleye tournaments, especially early-season events. It is the reason the Cabela’s National Team Championship will drop anchor on the Black River in Lorain on May 9-11. The daily takeoff will be at 6:45 a.m. and weigh-ins to be held at Black River Landing in Lorain starting art 3 p.m.

“We’re already seeing a lot of the tournament fishermen on site, and we expect a lot of trophy walleye coming to the scales,” said Craig Lewis at Erie Outfitters in Sheffield Lake.

Steelhead trout run winding down: Fishermen continue to prowl the Northeast Ohio rivers and streams for steelhead trout, but the run is almost over. Anglers are still catching some of the big trout in the rivers, but most are done spawning and slowly working their way back to Lake Erie to feed and recover from the rigors of the spawn.

A lot of smaller rainbow trout have been released in recent weeks in the East Branch of the Rocky River and Wallace Lake in Berea, as well as Shadow and Ledge lakes in the Cleveland Metroparks.

Be kind to the steelhead smolts: The Ohio Division of Wildlife’s Castalia State Fish Hatchery trucks have been pouring small steelhead trout “smolts” into the Northeastern Ohio steelhead streams, including Thursday into the lower Cuyahoga River for the very first time.

Anglers should carefully handle the yearling 6-to-9-inch fish, which are illegal to keep. If fishermen are hooking a lot of the small trout, change fishing locations rather than risk injuring the youngsters.

Smallmouth bass are invading: While steelhead trout are heading back to Lake Erie, smallmouth bass are heading up the rivers to spawn in very good numbers, although this week’s cold snap has slowed them down a bit. A lot of trophy bass have been checked by Cleveland Metroparks fisheries workers.

Guide Jeff Liskay of Avon Lake recommends casting small, square-billed crank baits for smallmouth bass, as well as Ned Rigs and small jigs and twister tails.

Bay’s Edge Open returns to traditional lures: While most tournament walleye anglers are trolling these days to cover lots of Lake Erie waters and hook trophy fish, the Lake Erie Walleye Trail’s Bay’s Edge Open in Port Clinton on Sunday had plenty of appeal for old-timers. The tournament limited anglers to traditional drift-and-cast fishing, or jigging lures.

Capt. Joe Gibson’s Team NIM No. 2 won the event and $4,700 with a limit of five walleye weighing 29.83 pounds. Team C’est La Fish was second (29.98 pound, $1,700) was second, and Team NIM was third (28.14 pounds, $1,000) was third,

Grace Kim shot a 7-under 64 at Wilshire Country Club to take the first-round lead Thursday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship.

Playing in the morning session, the 23-year-old Australian capped her bogey-free round with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 18th.

“Well, I chunked my tee shot on the last hole 20 meters short and then I chipped it in it,” Kim said. “I think that’s pretty cool, in front of everyone.”

Maja Stark of Sweden, Sei Young Kim of South Korea and Chanettee Wannasaen of Thailand were a stroke back at 65. Stark finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda.

“I was so tired when I got here,” Stark said. “I barely been practicing. Just did a little bit of what I needed to do. I feel like it’s kind of similar anyway because there are just some pins that you can’t go for just like at Chevron.”

Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her fifth victory in a row.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron, shooting 76-72.

“If I was to compare my round today to last week, I really focused on just not having too much in my mind,” she said. “I think I over-thought a lot of things through my first and second round last week and struggled a little bit mentally.”

Sei Young Kim had four straight birdies on Nos. 12-15 in her afternoon round. She won the last of her 12 LPGA Tour titles in 2020.

Auston Kim, Haeran Ryu and Nataliya Guseva shot 66, and defending champion Hannah Green matched Amy Yang and Bianca Pagdanganan at 67.
