Peter Ackroyd’s tour of English religious history

There isn’t much in The English Soul that you could not get from clicking in and out of the relevant Wikipedia entries on Wesley or the Diggers

Nevertheless, the overwhelming impression one gets from reading the major works of English literature, or from studying the famous English men and women of politics, the military or the academic world, is that the English have not been an especially religious lot. Or, if you think that a strange judgment of a nation that produced the finest Gothic cathedrals in Europe and the hymns of Charles Wesley, then you could rephrase it and say that they have not generally worn their religious feelings on their sleeve. Generalizations about national characteristics are open to question. Nevertheless, the overwhelming impression one gets from reading the major works of English literature, or from studying the famous English men and women of politics, the military or the academic world, is that the English have not been an especially religious lot. Or, if you think that a strange judgment of a nation that produced the finest Gothic cathedrals in Europe and the hymns of Charles Wesley, then you could rephrase it and say that they have not generally worn their religious feelings on their sleeve. Jane Austen’s hilarious novels do not quite prepare us for her letters in which she confesses her sympathy for evangelicalism. The novels are not only wonderful; they seem the quintessence of what we would like to think of as English.

Shakespeare describes almost all the emotions except the religious. Isabella in  Measure for Measure  is almost the only overtly religious character in the entire oeuvre. Dickens was in favor of Christmas and being kind, but his  Life of Christ  is really a bit of secular sentimentalism.

Undeterred, Peter Ackroyd has undertaken to tell the story of the English soul. Inevitably, therefore, it omits Shakespeare and John Locke and Dickens and William Cobbett. It is not a continuous narrative but a series of thumbnail sketches of some of the figures in English religious history, starting with the Venerable Bede, taking us on a breezy tour of the medieval mystics Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe, and whizzing through the cast list of Archbishop Laud, George Fox, John Bunyan and Cardinal Newman before we reach the twentieth century.

Ackroyd wrote a brilliant book about T.S. Eliot, whose  Four Quartets  were written when that austere American had become not merely a British citizen but a self-confessed monarchist and Anglo-Catholic. Surprisingly, neither Eliot nor his Christian witness get a mention. There is a chapter on C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton, preceded, in an odd chronological twist, by Richard Dawkins. And then we round off the story with three theologians: Bishop John Robinson, of  Honest to God  fame, John Hick and Don Cupitt. None of them, surely, is of sufficient merit or weight to be placed in a book with Richard Rolle or William Blake. And where is that great English churchman Dr. Johnson?

Ackroyd’s novels — especially  English Music ,  The House of Doctor Dee  (perhaps his masterpiece) and his bizarre fantasy  Milton in America , in which he transports the author of  Paradise Lost  to the colonies — are true evocations of the English soul. They also retain what is, or was, a huge part of Ackroyd’s personality when he was out and about in London, before retreating into his anchorite’s cell near Harvey Nicks — namely, humor. His biography of Thomas More is the best. His book on William Blake is completely wonderful.

It is in the context of contemplating Ackroyd’s near genius in these earlier books that I dare to express a bit of disappointment in this one. In the acknowledgements, he thanks research assistants, and, although I am sure they have done their best, there isn’t much in  The English Soul  that you could not get from clicking in and out of the relevant Wikipedia entries on Wesley or the Diggers. In fact, because the book jerks hastily from one subject to another, it feels more like the experience of looking up names in Wikipedia than like reading a book.

Before Ackroyd wrote his novels, he was also a poet, and it was with a poet’s skill that he evoked, in his fiction, the spiritually bizarre. How glorious it would be if he regarded the sketches which make up this book as work in progress towards his own  Four Quartets .

Olivia Rodrigo unveils Asian tour dates: ‘Stay tuned Manila’

Filipino American pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo unveiled the much-anticipated Asian stops of her GUTS World Tour.

Taking to Instagram, the Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter shared the official tour poster, igniting anticipation among her fans in Asia. The Asian leg of her tour is slated to kick off on Sept. 16 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok.

In the middle of the fervor surrounding her tour announcement, Rodrigo took a moment to express gratitude for the overwhelming response to her European tour leg.

“Europe leg of the GUTS world tour has been wonderful so far,” she wrote. “So much luv for everyone who has been coming 2 jump and sing and scream!!! Asia and Australia dates just announced!!! hope to see ya there!!!”

The tour, spanning from September to October this year, will see Olivia gracing iconic venues in Seoul on Sept. 20, Hong Kong on Sept. 24, Tokyo on Sept. 27, Singapore on Oct. 1, and even venturing Down Under to enchant audiences in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia on Oct. 9, 11, 17 and 18.

Yet, amid the whirlwind of excitement, Filipino fans were met with a tease as the “Drivers License” songstress left a message on the tour poster: “Stay tuned Manila!”

This hint has left fans in the Philippines eagerly awaiting further announcements, sparking speculation about a potential Manila tour date.

The Fil-Am artist, renowned for chart-topping hits like “Traitor” and “Vampire,” has expressed her desire to tour the Philippines, a sentiment she recently shared in an interview with Rolling Stone last year. In the interview, Rodrigo effusively praised the warmth and hospitality of Filipinos, stating, “People there are so welcoming and hospitable and awesome. Filipino people ride for other Filipino people.”

Rodrigo’s connection to her Filipino heritage has been a recurring theme in her public persona. In a 2018 interview with the Center for Asian American Media, she shared insights into her family’s Filipino traditions, including the preparation of Filipino cuisine like lumpia.

Lady Gaga Will 'Never Forget' Chromatica Ball Tour as She Unveils Trailer for Upcoming Max Concert Special

On Wednesday, May 8, the Grammy-winning superstar unveiled the trailer and release date for her long-awaited HBO Original concert special, Gaga Chromatica Ball , chronicling her 2022 stadium tour in support of her 2020 album, Chromatica .

Produced, directed and created by Gaga, the upcoming feature is a taped version of the Chromatica Ball concert at the 52,000-capacity Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Sept. 10, 2022. The setlist includes classic hits from "Just Dance," "Poker Face" and "Born This Way" to more recent songs like "Shallow" and "Stupid Love."

Alongside the trailer reveal, the "Rain on Me" singer, 38, posted to social media with a lengthy note about the film, which will become available to stream via Max on May 25. "I’m so excited that we can finally share The Chromatica Ball film with the world," she began.

"This film chronicles a time of immense creativity…the fashion, the dance, the music," Gaga wrote. "Revisiting the tour leaves me speechless the way we had each other — you all showed up for music and art in a big way, and with a level of excitement and freedom that I will never forget. Stadium after stadium. Sold out crowds. The deafening singalongs."

" Chromatica was colorful revenge. The chaos of it all became pure energy and life. With a texture best experienced live," continued Gaga, before quoting lyrics from the Chromatica track "Babylon": "Strut it out, walk a mile / Serve it ancient city style."

The Joker: Folie à Deux star added, "Self-acceptance is a theme that cuts through all my songs. I believe it is always possible to dig deep and find your greatness. Self-discovery is an art. Self-love is a practice."

Gaga then turned her attention to the fans, concluding, "I love you monsters more than I can say. See yourself in every vocal, every fabric choice, the choreography, every image… Here’s the truth—no matter where life or my career has taken me, my time with you always is a path back to a very powerful part of myself. In a stadium filled with YOU it came to life. Thank you for that feeling. I hope you will feel seen when you watch this film. And know that I edited it carefully to honor you."

Chromatica was released in May 2020 and spawned No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Stupid Love" and "Rain on Me" featuring Ariana Grande , the latter of which earned a Grammy Award for best pop duo/group performance the following year. The Chromatica Ball tour spanned 20 shows across Asia, North America and Europe from July 2022 through September 2022.

J Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

With more than 6,000 years worth of creative treasures, the Getty is one of the best places for art on the west coast of the US. Go from neolithic clay figures to Van Gogh’s Irises and Renoir’s La Promenade – just two of many artworks that feature in the virtual tour . Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This grand museum has a vast collection of art and historical objects across 80 galleries. A 10-year renovation project was completed in 2013, transforming the space and combining elements of 19th-century grandeur with modern lighting and a new glass-roofed atrium. National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, South Korea

There are several sites making up this museum: the main gallery in Gwacheon and branches in Deoksugung, Seoul and Cheongju. MASP, São Paulo, Brazil

The Museu de Arte de São Paulo has one of the broadest historical collections available to view via its virtual gallery platform , spanning from the 14th to 20th centuries. Paintings appear suspended in the air around the open-plan space, on glass panels or “crystal easels” as the museum calls them. There’s also a temporary retrospective exhibition by Brazilian pop artist Teresinha Soares beside the building’s statement red staircase. New York’s Great Art Deco Corridor Architectural Walking Tour

In honor of the exhibition Wonder City of the World: New York City Travel Posters , Poster House is hosting a walking tour celebrating the history of the Queer Harlem Renaissance. On Saturday, June 1, step back in time to learn about the queer Black artists and writers who dominated the cultural space between  1919 to 1935. This tour celebrates the gay social networks of the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the safe spaces that were integral to the community—spaces that no longer exist. Utilizing augmented reality through the Queer Harlem phone application, participants will walk through Harlem and witness the people, places, and histories of the past, from Drag Balls to Rent Parties. Bring a fully charged battery and get ready to excavate this exciting history! All proceeds from this program will be donated to the Ali Forney Center.

This tour will be hosted by Brian Turner and Abriannah Aiken, the co-authors of Disappearing Queer Spaces , and will feature the Queer Harlem app that digitally reconstructs seven spaces from the Queer Harlem Renaissance, including the Savoy Ballroom, the Rockland Palace, and the Niggeratti Manor (a self-proclaimed name). Please note that none of these spaces currently exist, so the augmented reality application will be integral to the experience and storytelling! This program was created in collaboration with DLR Group, which funded the Queer Harlem app through an internal grant. 

All proceeds from this program will be donated to the Ali Forney Center.

More than a million music fans gathered at Brazil’s iconic Copacabana beach to prove their love to Madonna over the weekend.

The “Get into the Groove” and “Vogue” pop diva concluded her career-spanning Celebration Tour with a bang over the weekend, treating fans in Rio de Janeiro to a free beach concert on Saturday. “This really happened,” the singer reminisced in an Instagram video shared Sunday.

The Instagram clip shows an aerial view of attendees assembling on the sandy Brazilian strip, which stretches more than 2 miles along the coast. While some fans danced on the beach, others hosted house parties in nearby beachfront apartments and hotels, the Associated Press reported.

Madonna’s Celebration tour is a messy victory lap that needs more razzle-dazzle

Madonna brought her career-spanning Celebration tour to the Kia Forum for a night of hits, memories and grievances.

“This place is magic,” the 65-year-old singing icon said during her show, which also featured appearances from Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

An estimated 1.6 million people gathered for Madonna’s Celebration Tour finale, Brazilian outlet G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. The event was also broadcast on Brazilian network TV Globo. Even before a million-plus fans descended on Copacabana over the weekend, Madonna announced in late March that her send-off would be her “biggest gig yet.”

“The show will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour,” her website said.

Saturday’s concert broke Madge’s personal attendance record — 130,000 fans at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987 — by more than tenfold. Madonna also bested the record previously held by the Rolling Stones’ 2006 Copacabana concert , which drew 1.5 million people.

” @Madonna makes history in Rio tonight marking the largest ever standalone concert for any artist, with over 1.6 million fans attending as she closes The Celebration Tour,” Live Nation announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour launched in October, months after she was hospitalized for a bacterial infection last June. The Grammy winner brought her headline-generating tour to Inglewood’s Kia Forum for several nights in March.

Times critic Mikael Wood wrote that the singer’s Celebration Tour “ was curiously short on joy. ”

“A pop concert is a theater of personality and craft, not one of plot or character development,” he added. “But a narrative this messy needed more razzle-dazzle.”

A group of architects are calling for a boycott of Columbia University following protests.

A group of architecture and design professionals and academics have initiated a boycott against Columbia University, specifically targeting the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, in response to the university’s handling of student protests against the war in Gaza. The boycott, organized under the banner Architects and Planners Against Apartheid, escalated after Columbia called in police to disband encampments and clear demonstrators from campus buildings, resulting in numerous arrests. A little-known mural that Keith Haring made for an Iowa school goes on public display.
