Monica’s climb to the top of the travel business has not been a walk in the park.

All through her childhood, Monica struggled to get food and shelter. Her mother could hardly afford to pay her school fees or fend for her siblings.

“She sold illicit brews to fend for us,” she says.

Here story offers some key lessons on how to start a tours and travel company in Kenya.

After completing her secondary education with a C+, she enrolled for a Food and Beverages course at the SOS Technical Institute in Buru Buru.

“I wanted to get some skills that would enable me to live a better life and also help my siblings get out of the slums.” She raised some money from friends began her course.

After graduating in 2003, Monica got a job as a waitress at the Bounty Hotel in South B.

“I worked hard and was promoted from casual to permanent employment.” She says that many of her clients wrote to the hotel’s management commending her work.

“One of the clients was Mr. Erlend Vold Engetf, who owned World Kenya Camping and Safaris. He offered me a chance to serve as a Marketing Manager at his company in 2006.”

This was in spite of the fact that she had zero experience in tours and travel. Neither had she held a managerial position before.

“Although I was anxious, I knew that I would be quick to learn. I felt equal to the challenge and was determined to produce positive results.”

Within a few months, Monica had mustered all the tricky workings in the business.

“I became the company’s image and would represent it in every top tours and marketing conference in and outside the country.”

It was while working at World Camping Kenya that she began to contemplate starting her own tours and travel company.

“I did not have any capital to boot. To many of those I shared my idea, venturing into tours and travel would be the beginning of my end.”

But there was no holding Monica back. In January 2008, she resigned from her managerial position.

“I am grateful that my employer was understanding and offered to help me if I ever got stuck.”

She founded her own travel agency, Scenery Adventures together with one of her close friends, which she later incorporated in 2013 having a branch in Norway.

“We did not have much when starting. After paying rent for a small office at Bidco Towers, we were left with a Sh. 5,000 operating capital.”

To make do, Monica would rent cars whenever she had a client. The business had hardly picked up than one of her clients was involved in a road accident with a rented vehicle.

“The borrower escaped. The car was towed to the police station and the police started looking for me.” To make matters worse, her partner disappeared on her. She was arrested and detained at Central Police Station for a week.

“I was released after the insurance company intervened.”

Soon after, another woman hired the remaining car to attend a function in Thika town. Unknown to Monica, she was a ring-leader in a car-theft city cartel.

“I had a hard time bearing the thought that she’d stolen the car.”

She informed the car-owner who promptly called the police, accusing Monica of masterminding the theft.

She was arrested and detained at Central Police Station for two weeks. Fortunately, the car was recovered and the woman nabbed.

With no money left to keep her business running, Monica painfully shut down barely a few months after opening her business.

“I had nothing; I couldn’t even afford a decent meal. I was taken in by a friend in Kawangware.”

Her moment of redemption finally arrived when her friend proposed that they restart the business a few months later.

“We pooled our savings together and came up with Sh.40,000. We reopened the office at Bidco and hired two new cars.”

This partnership, though, was short-lived. Just when the business started picking, Monica suffered another setback. Her partner began using the hired cars for personal leisure.

“I’d get good business only to realize that the hired cars were away with my partner on personal business.” Her operating capital dwindled as the cost of operations spiraled upwards. She closed down again. “I began to wonder if I would ever make it.”

But Monica was not about to give up. From the Sh. 70,000 savings she had in 2009, she rented an office at Afya House and reopened the business alone.

Although she was nervous that she may close down again, Monica says she was wiser and knew what booby-traps to avoid. Her big break came in August 2010. She secured a contract to book and ride ambassadors accompanying former US. Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, during the AGOWA forum.

“I made sure I secured useful contacts while providing my services.”

Since then, the sky has been the limit for her. She has secured contracts with Akon and MTV MAMA, the Korean embassy and the Uganda government. She has opened a branch in Norway with her former employer and partner Erlend Vold.

“My aim is to fully tap into the Scandinavian market,” she says.

Currently, she has four permanent employees and eight vehicles. Monica says that she bought her first business car on cash at Sh.900,000 then used the log book to take a loan and buy the second car at Sh. 700,000.

“You have to risk and take a loan here and there. If you rely on pooling your resources through savings alone, you may never make it on time,” she says.

Her biggest challenge in the building her travel agency has been lack of enough capital. “In business, capital grows you. Lack of it will inevitably bring you down.”

Monica adds that her success in the tours and travel business has been transformed by her ability to take risks, push things up, and believe that she will make it.

“Without self-believe and risk-taking, you’ll go nowhere in business. Learn from the mistakes you make and be wiser when investing,” she says.

Since I started Incredible Kenya Adventures in 2016, many have asked me – “How to start a tours and travel company in Kenya”.

I decided to do a well-detailed article on the same so you’re in the right place if you want to start tours and travel company.

I like giving myself as an example, the idea to start a travel company came way back in 2015 one year after my first employment.

It was hard to understand why I was making so much money for someone while I could only get a fraction of it. I wanted it all.

Being an overthinker, this idea to start my travel company was born and I started planning an exit plan.

Motivational speakers will preach to you how you should just jump in but you got to have a plan, my friend.

Yes, take risks but calculated ones, otherwise you may find yourself regretting some decisions. Think then act but don’t act then start thinking. Are we together up to this point?

I took one whole year to plan and in 2016 I registered my tours and travel Company; I was still employed.

For a start business was good and by the end of 2016, I was making more than my salary.

Come 2017, an election year. I wanted to quit that January but something told me to wait until the elections were over.

It is in that February up to date am yet to get such a lucrative deal. It is at this moment I was confident now it was time to move.

But I decided to wait until after the elections anyway (To be continued).

Without much ado, this is how to start a tours and Travel company.

Do you have an E-Citizen account? If not Open one here then proceeds to log in. Once in the portal click on Business registration Service.

Then head to Application and the first step on how to start a tours and Travel Company in Kenya will be to search for a business name.

You should have at least three names that suit your business and name them according to priority. If the first one is not available then the second name will be selected and vice versa.

The Process is self-explanatory all you have to do is follow the steps guided in your E-Citizen until completion.

While choosing a name for my tours and travel Company I did not have much guidance and I will use the name as a case study.

The official name is Incredible Kenya Adventures Tours and Travel Ltd .

What is wrong with the name? Here are some points to note when choosing a business name.

Length: – See how long the name is, it rarely fits in checkbooks, EFT bank slips Etc. It reached a point I had to talk to my bank to shorten the name but they told me.

The name should appear as it is in the certificate of Incorporation. I went ahead to shorten it anyway to Incredible Kenya Adventures Ltd. Though still long, it is better. NB// Certificate of Incorporation still remains the original long Name.

Quirky: – Let your name stand out, a local unique name would sound more engrossing than the cliché ones. For example, Nzou Adventures sounds unique. Nzou is Elephant in my Local language. See how short and to the point is the name.

Two Letter Word: – A Business with one or two names will make it easy for you as we have seen the challenges above with a long name.

Besides everything, the name will be easy to remember- making it easy for marketing purposes. A name a small kid can memorize is always a to-go business name.

Avoid using your name: – As much as it may give a personal touch, the moment you give your company your name, that name becomes a corporate asset.

This can lead to all sorts of legal disputes if you encounter another company that had a similar idea, or if you eventually bring on investors. Giving your tour firm your name is also a bit cliché.

Have a running and Operational Website.

As you wait for your certificate of incorporation, it is time to invest in a good website. I had Intelix Solutions design mine.

Once the Incorporation certificate is out you will apply for a Business KRA PIN and once you have everything in place this is the time to open a business account at the bank of your choice.

You will need to open at least two bank accounts as follows-:

US Dollars Account: – For International tourists (Inbounds)

  • Appointment letter, CV, certified copy of a professional certificate
  • Summary of skilled and unskilled staff

Kenya’s tourism market makes an impressive comeback

  • The industry's revenue growth was propelled by a 32% increase in tourist visits, with the number rising from 642,861 to 847,810. 
  • Leading markets for arrivals included the US, Uganda, Tanzania, the UK, and India, while both domestic tourism and visits for business, conferences, and meetings also contributed to the positive trend.

As a result of the continuous global recovery, the tourism industry in Kenya saw a 31% increase in earnings in the first half of the year through June compared to the same time in 2022.

In the last six months, the tourism industry booked Ksh152.6 billion ($1.06 billion), up from Ksh116.2 billion ($807.79 million) in 2022, according to data from the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB).

The revenues increased as tourist visits increased by 32%, from 642,861 to 847,810 in the same time in 2022. One of COVID-19's hardest-hit industries was international travel and tourism, which is expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels in 2023.

“The tourism sector in Kenya experienced a remarkable upswing in international arrivals leading to a positive effect on the country’s tourism receipts,” said the KTB in its report. “This performance is a 92 percent recovery when compared to the 2019 performance of 929,814 arrivals same period. Of significance is that June 2023 arrivals closed at 168,051. This is a growth of one percent when compared to 166,692, ” the report adds.

Holidays continued to be the primary reason for entry closure throughout the study period, accounting for 338,509 (39.9%) of all entries. Visits for business, conferences, and meetings came in second with 226,908 arrivals, an increase of 26.8%, while visits to family and friends came in third with 213,417 arrivals, an increase of 25.2 percent.

44,620 (5.3%) people used the transit system. Other goals included sports, medical, education, and religion, totaling 24,356, a gain of 2.9%.

According to the data, the US (118,480), Uganda (89,968), Tanzania (69,777), the UK (65,563), and India (42,805) are the top five countries for overseas arrivals.

Some important markets have outperformed 2019 (January–June) performance, including the US (up 7% from 110,743 to 118,480), Italy (up 15.6% from 22,017 to 25,451), Germany (up 4% from 32,142 to 33,418), Rwanda (up 34.5% from 18,845 to 25,422), and Ethiopia (up 66.1%).

The Netherlands increased by 6.9%, from 19,123 to 20,442, Nigeria increased by 7.3%, from 15,307 to 16,424, Ghana increased by 28.1%, from 5,137 to 6,583, and Russia increased by 40.8 %, from 2,514 to 3,539.

Domestic tourism increased throughout the time period under study, with bed nights concluding the year 2023 (January–June) at 2.3 million, up from 2.02 million. This represents a 16 percent gain. The Easter holidays and business travel, respectively, are to blame for the best-performing months of April and June.

You need to have an office, a Website and the list is endless. This has been one common perception among most Kenyans, well to tell you the truth if you have ever thought like that, then I can tell you that you have lived a lie and have held a misconception of the tourism issue.

After many years of wanting to venture into this lucrative business, I could not find a possible way of starting out, and truth be told; I too lived that lie and that is why I can clearly describe it to you. It wasn’t until I was invited by some friends to join them on a local tour around the country that my eyes were opened and I now can see the clear picture. I have decided to pen the picture here in words and that is why it is this long you know a picture is worth all these words.

This guide is simply written from practical experience where I was able to witness how a small idea gave birth to one of the greatest tour firms in the country, I will not give names as the owners have advised me not to and if you have a clue please save it, at least do it for me. This article is basically a description of how the company started and how they carried out their operations until they reached the current state they are now. I was there during conceptualization and I am still there even when I put together this post I am with them and they are my greatest friends.

Maybe all of you already know that every great business has to start somewhere, most start small and grow with time facing times of profits and times of loss, but to reach the top you just have to start at the bottom. That was in December 2012 and I forgot about it then met some people who brought it all back now is the time I put it all together.

To some it has been routine and some families have marked their calendars that every holiday they have to travel down to the coast, this is not a new trend and critics will judge by saying that is not domestic tourism in Kenya, well I don’t have the space for debate on the issue but I have for another.

Well to me this is the next big thing closer to Quail business in the country, they are beginning small promoting domestic tourism and only time stands between them and great tour firms in the world.

I must have skipped some few lines back then and I must say I am sorry, just to define what Domestic Tourism is: This is tourism involving residents of one country traveling only within that country what these small organizations or businesses are doing is basically domestic tourism. Now domestic tourism in Kenya is all the above just replace any country with the name Kenya.

Fun things to do in Kenya

Well, some do it for fun and there is no monetary drive behind it, just imagine a couple of friends who come together, they save some cash and go to a certain place and have fun, I know of a couple of groups and I am in one that does that at least once in every two months. There are also companies and business corporations or the NGO with their team building activities go out and have fun. An example of those who do it for money is so simple; A young guy invites his/her friends and asks them to give him or her some money and takes them out to a nice place probably on a weekend or holiday and they have fun and s/he makes some coins out of the event.

This is what I learned from my friends:

It was during a get-together party where we were meeting with a couple of friends for goat eating bash, one of us mentioned we do it next time (The goat eating bash) and boom the idea was born, little did we know some of us were contemplating starting a domestic tourism business. We all went home and on the way I overheard two of my friends discuss the business, they were close so I never bothered to interrupt their brainstorming session.

Step 1: Be motivated

The first step to starting any business is that you need to have a motivation, a drive or a need that you want to see accomplished. My friends were motivated by us coming together; the goat eating really triggered them to see an opportunity. I know some of you will be triggered after reading this post which is good, read on.

Step 2: Get a Partner:

Getting a partner is crucial to most businesses today, that other person will always see something that you are not seeing or have seen but not taken into consideration; they will help you move in the right direction. Don’t forget the partner needs to have the same vision as you or even close to what you see and have as much motivation as you.

Now for my friends they were two, I joined them later when I realized they were going somewhere but after lots and lots of convincing on my part.

From now on I won’t be telling you now my friends did this or that but all that is written below are what they did exactly now am just describing to you how you can do it. So don’t raise eyebrows when you noticed I have stopped mentioning my friends from now on.

Step 3: Identify an Attraction:

They call them tourist attraction; You need to act fast and think of places you need to visit, Since you are starting I suggest you look around your town for best places you can take your clients, yes clients it is a business even if it is your friends you will be taking they are your clients, you can call them customers too.

Write down a list of the places in your locality that can be a venue where your clients can play, interact and marvel at the giving of their own town. The only filter you need to apply here is the locality nothing more nothing less. Make sure your list has more than three places in your town, I don’t know of any country with few than three places to visit.

Step 4: Pre-Visit

You need to be familiar with the places you have noted down, you don’t want to be caught off guard when you take your clients to a place you are not familiar with. You can visit all or only the ones you really intend to take the clients too. I am sure you will not be charged if you tell the management of the sites that you intend to bring people to them.

During your visit, you should consider the following:

1. Distance from your meeting place 2. Mode of transport to and from the place 3. Features (what they offer) 4. Fees – that is entrance fees 5. Rules and regulations of the places 6. Security

The list is not in any order, but those are the basic requirements you need to consider.

Step 5: Budget

Do the budgeting based on the entrance fee, transport costs, food if any and any more budget you need for the visit. This budget will help you decide how you will charge your clients. If you see it is too expensive to check again and make sure to cut on your budget.

When you set the amount to charge your clients you can do a bit of research on how your competitors charge. Don’t be hungry to earn more and don’t put your charges high it will scare off your potential clients.

Step 6: Marketing

You have the venue, the budget and now it is the time to look for clients, you might think it is easy and will be easy to get people to go to your place of choice. Start with your friends show them the charges and promise to waive their charges if they bring one person to the firm.

Use the Social media to your advantage, we are living in a digital world and that is an advantage, be active on social media, create a page on Facebook and name it the name of your firm, start by inviting your friends to like it. You then create an event for the place you will be visiting and invite friends, remember to include your contact details and give all the necessary information about what you intend to do. Use groups to share your page and events for wider reach.

NB: Plan early, give it like a month when you start advertising and be active posting interesting facts about your firm and the venue you want to visit, do a search if the venue has a social media account, most of them have, post your links about visiting them on their accounts.

Step 6: Visit

When the day finally comes you surely will know if you are successful, if no one turns up, there is definitely something you have not done right go back and do everything again.

During the event make sure you allow the people to interact, take the lead make them know each other, and you can start with introductions and use games to make them feel comfortable. Remember to create a guest list if you can buy a visitors book and use it to take the contacts that are fine.

During the event be a person who thinks about the future, you have clients, you need to keep them and go with them to the next event, ask them where they would want to go next and consider their suggestions. Make sure they suggest someplace, make them feel part of the group and part of the organization.

Step 7: After the Event

Well, you had a successful event and have some clients in your book, it is time now to hold on them and make sure they will be with you in the future. Since you collected all the contacts you can use social media to make them interact more. They had found new friends and might like to continue knowing each other. Invite them to a chat app on any social media, create one and add them. Use mobile phone chat apps like WhatsApp and make them be active.

Step 8: Plan for the Next One

They will be eager to do something new, suggest something new, some place to go and watch the reactions, then do it advertise and now you will get even a larger number, repeat the process and that is how we made it be one big tour firm in the country.

That is it easy yeah, we have done this for some like 10 times and are still doing it and we are not tired.

There are things learned from doing this, remember I am a Tech guy and not a hospitality or tourism guy, I manage the companies social media accounts and I am a SEO expert and configure blogs for my other clients, but I have managed to keep ahead in the tourism industry long enough to understand the workings of the industry. That is being A Smart Kenyan.

What I learned about Domestic Tourism in Kenya:

1. Youth tends to go to such events more than any other group, so in our planning, we have managed to choose places where the youth will interact freely and benefit from the experience. 2. Kenyans in general like group activities and this is the major banking of our firm, unlike foreigners or another tourist who come to Kenya with their families, our fellow countrywomen and men want to have fun with friends and strangers or colleagues. 3. Kenyans too want to visit places they have never visited or local tourist attractions, this is contrary to the general perception held by many that we don’t visit our country. 4. It takes time just like any other business to become where they are, be patient and be smart as a Kenyan.

The basic premise of the article was well intentioned, but i think it was more geared to do this as a hobby more than a business. To start a business you need to do ALOT of research, you need to understand licensing, financing, basic accounting, taxes, logistics and so many others not mentioned ion your article. You also need to read up on the business you intend to start and factor in why you think you are suited for that particular business and lastly work very hard at it. It might have worked for your friends but in this article you are not setting your readers up for success.

The well-established tourism sector in Kenya contributed KES403.7bn to the economy in 2011. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council it provided 778,500 jobs (11.9% of total employment).  The country was placed 54th in the world (out of 181 countries) in respect to its relative contribution to the nation’s economy, with a 13.7% share of GDP, just below the world average of 14% (WTTC 2011).  The industry is the country’s largest source of foreign exchange.  In 2010 the country saw 1,470,000 visitors.  Europeans maintain their traditional position as the most numerous visitors to Kenya, making up around 60% of total arrivals in 2011.  Africa is second with around 23%, followed by the Americas (9%) and Asia (9%).  The United Kingdom is the largest country source market, followed by Germany, the USA and Italy.  However, markets in the east are emerging, including China, Japan and India, alongside the emerging domestic market which has become an important contributor to the industry.  In 2011 visitor exports generated KES171.1bn, constituting 18.6% of total exports.  There are several public and private sector associations that bring together the Kenyan tourism industry, including the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, Kenya Association of Travel Agents, the Eco-tourism Society of Kenya and the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers.  The state corporation Kenya Tourist Board promotes tourism internationally.  In 2010 it was recognised as the ‘Best National Tourism Board in Middle East, Africa and Indian Ocean’ at the ‘Emirates Holidays World’ awards.  In October 2011 the Board hosted the Magical Kenya Travel Expo in Nairobi, bringing together over 170 travel agents and trade media from Kenya’s source markets worldwide, enabling local operators to develop their marketing.

The wildlife of Kenya has traditionally been the main tourist attraction, with the country utilising its reputation as an excellent safari destination.  The consequent focus that has been placed on wildlife preservation has seen Kenya developing into the premier ecotourism destination in Africa.  The National Parks, notably the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Amboseli and Hell’s Gate, remain the central focus of international tourism in the country.  The diversity of landscape in Kenya is also a great draw, from the savannahs to the snowy mountains.  The beaches of the Mombasa, Malindi, Watumu and Lamu are attractive destinations for both international and domestic tourists.

There has also been a growing focus on community based tourism projects throughout Kenya and it provides excellent investment opportunities.  The benefits of such schemes have been seen in communities that have allowed access to their land and have seen their lifestyles improve through increased wages, land leases and development funds.  Often the projects have contributed to the communities through the building of boreholes, schools and clinics.

Investment in travel and tourism in 2011 was KES44.4bn, constituting 7.5% of total investment.  It was expected to rise by 6.8% in 2012, and then continue to rise by 4.5% pa over the following ten years to KES74.1bn by 2022.

  • Tourism in Kenya is the third-biggest foreign exchange earner after remittances and agricultural exports.
  • The tourism sector’s performance has been impressive, with earnings reaching $ 2.7 billion in 2023, a 32 per cent growth from $1.8 billion recorded in 2022.

In 2024, the sector is projected to recover to pre-pandemic levels per the strategy for tourism in Kenya 2021-2025.

Tourism is Kenya’s third-highest foreign exchange earner after remittances and agricultural exports.

According to the Tourism Research Institute, the industry accounts for about 10 per cent of Kenya’s gross domestic product and about 5 per cent of its formal employment.

Kenya has been a significant tourist destination in East Africa, attracting visitors worldwide to its wildlife parks, sandy beaches at the coast, diverse flora and fauna, cultural heritage, and scenic landscapes, to name a few.

However, the outbreak of COVID-19 sent shockwaves to the tourism sector, bringing it to a halt globally and scarring the Kenyan tourism sector greatly.

Gross domestic product from the tourism sector dropped from 8.8 per cent of total GDP in 2018 to 8 per cent in 2019 and continued to plummet throughout 2020.

However, In 2021, the tourism industry bounced back, contributing about 5.4 billion dollars to Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product. The amount increased by nearly 35 per cent compared to 2020.

In 2022, Kenya’s tourism performance continued on a recovery path. International tourist arrivals were 1,483,752, representing a 70.45 per cent increase compared to 2021 arrivals of 870,465. Inbound receipts in the year grew to $1.8 billion compared to $1.1 billion in 2021, a growth of 83 per cent.

Impressive Recovery in the Tourism Sector

The tourism sector’s performance has bounced back strongly, with earnings reaching $ 2.7 billion last year, a 32 per cent growth from $1.8 billion recorded in 2022.

Last year’s performance also marked a significant milestone, with the earnings surpassing the pre-COVID pandemic numbers of $2.2 billion recorded in 2019, which has until now been the industry’s best year.

Visitors to the East African nation accelerated by 32 per cent to 1.95 million in 2023.

The leading tourist markets in the country were the United States, Uganda, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and India.

Tourists visited Kenya in 2023 for different reasons, including holidays, which accounted for 45 per cent, visiting family and relatives at 24 per cent, and meetings and conferences at 24 per cent.

Although more people visited in 2023 compared to the previous year, they spent less on average, pegged to the shilling depreciation against the dollar.

However, there is light for the industry as commendable growth has continued to pave the way for a prosperous industry in the future.

Projects and prospects set to accelerate tourism in 2024

The strategy places Kenya as an all-around tourism destination, offering diverse and unique experiences. Additionally, it rebranded the image of tourism in Kenya and repositioned it as an upmarket.

The strategy aids in developing, enabling, and unlocking alternative funding sources to harness digital innovations and new technologies to improve the sector.

The removal of visitor visa requirements, the rise of wellness and experiential travel, and the digital transformation of tourism processes will be among the key factors driving travel trends in 2024.

The renowned warmth and hospitality of the Kenyan people to business travellers will offer experiences they are sure to return to.

Moreover, Kenya has taken significant strides in Environmental sustainability, with numerous eco-friendly resorts and conservation-focused tour operators. The country’s commitment to sustainability aligns with modern tourism trends and is expected to be a significant tourism driver in 2024.

Meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions tourism (MICE tourism) ranked third in terms of the purpose of entry in 2023, accounting for 24.8 per cent of international arrivals from January to October 2023.

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) hopes to collaborate with convention centres, private hotels, and other players to pitch for major MICE businesses.

In 2024, KTB hopes to engage with travel trade partners, including airlines, tour guides, and hotel owners, to deliver an authentic Kenyan experience during such conferences.

The country hopes to build on resurgent travel from established markets such as the United States and Europe. Additionally, there is considerable growth from African markets, with Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan forming a remarkable percentage of Kenya’s top visitor-contributing countries.

The Ministry of Tourism and the government of Kenya hope to welcome 2.4 million tourists this year and grow earnings in the industry to $1.8 billion.

The potential for partnership with circular economy efforts in hotspots like Watamu extends well beyond the local businesses. For example,  each individual booking of a multi-day trip  with Oceanic Society  directly sponsors the removal of 200 pounds of plastic pollution by funding the salaries of beach cleaners at WMA. Additionally, Oceanic Society’s award winning tour of Kenya  takes visitors to Watamu, where they will see the circular economy work firsthand after experiencing the area’s natural wonders.

“That partnership has created a link between Oceanic Society clients and how they can link directly to our beach cleaners and recyclers here in Watamu on the Kenya coast,” Trott explained. “It’s not often that you see a direct flow of support and funds actually going 100 percent to the effort on the ground, which then have 100 percent impact and a direct environmental impact, a direct conservation impact, a direct and measurable socio-economic impact for local communities.”

The benefits of the circular economy are not only felt at the grassroots level. The plastic recycling programs that WMA and Eco-World implement have been lauded as frontrunners in sustainable waste management by the U.S. government . The Kenyan government has since taken action to protect their natural wonders – a core aspect of the economy – from the damaging effects of plastic waste. They banned single use plastic bags in 2017 and followed up with barring single-use plastics from national parks, beaches, and conservation areas. New regulations will force companies selling products in Kenya to reduce their waste starting in 2024.

Trott anticipates that WMA will provide income to over 1,000 people as beach cleaners, collecting over 50 tons of plastic waste per month by the end of 2024.

He hopes the model can be replicated around the world, “If we can do it in Watamu, then clearly it can be done in other resort towns and not just in Kenya… our plans are to expand it to the East Africa coastline. But this is a model that can be replicated in developing countries and especially coastal resort towns that have a hotel industry producing waste, producing recyclable waste.”

Kenya’s tourism sector growth impressive in the first half of 2023

In the six months to June 2023, the United States remained the leading source market for Kenya’s tourism sector growth.

  • Americans are familiar with Kenya’s Mount Kenya region and the Maasai Mara National Reserve, which offers Safari experiences.
  • Uganda was the second leading source of travelers with 89,968 (10.6%), Tanzania came in third with 69,777 (8.2%), the UK fourth with 65,563 (7.7%) while India closed the top five list.

International tourist arrivals grew 32 per cent in the half-year to June, closing at 847,810 as the Kenya’s tourism sector growth continued post-Covid-19. This was up from 642,861 arrivals recorded in the same period last year, official data by the Ministry of Tourism indicates.

The performance represents a 92 per cent recovery compared to the 2019 in same period. The increased numbers came with higher earnings for the country and the sector.

“The tourism sector in Kenya experienced a remarkable upswing in international arrivals leading to a positive effect on the country’s tourism receipts,” Kenya Tourism Board said.

During the half-year period, the total tourism receipts surged to $1.1 billion (Ksh152.6 billion), reflecting an impressive growth rate of 31 per cent compared to the previous year’s earnings of $804.7 million (Ksh.116.2 billion).

Top source markets

In the first half of 2023, the US remained the leading source market for Kenya’s tourism sector growth, closing at 118,480 North American tourists who visited Kenya. Americans are familiar with Kenya’s Mount Kenya region and the Maasai Mara National Reserve, which offers Safari experiences. American visitors during the six months accounted for 14 per cent of the total arrivals.

Most European tourists from the UK, Germany, and Italy prefer the coastal region (Mombasa, Diani, Malindi, Kilifi, and Lamu), competing with Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar as leading beach holiday destinations in East Africa.

Uganda was the second leading source with 89,968 (10.6 per cent), Tanzania came in third with 69,777 (8.2 per cent), the UK fourth with 65,563 (7.7 per cent) while India closed the top five list with 42,805 arrival (5 per cent).

Some key markets have surpassed 2019 half–year performance, KTB said, notably the US by seven per cent in 2019 from 110,743 to 118,480; Italy by 15.6 per cent from 22,017 to 25,451; Germany by four per cent from 32,142 to 33,418 and Rwanda by 34.5 per cent from 18,845 to 25,422.

Ethiopia also surpassed last year’s arrivals by 66.1 per cent from 11,018 to 18,296; the Netherlands by 6.9 per cent from 19,123 to 20,442; Nigeria by 7.3 per cent from 15,307 to 16,424; Ghana by 28.1 per cent from 5,137 to 6,583 and Russia by 40.8 per cent from 2,514 to 3,539.

Purpose of entry.

The government statistics indicated that the period holiday was the primary purpose of entry closing at 338,509 (39.9 per cent). Business & MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) was the second primary purpose if visiting Kenya by international tourists.

During the period under review, 226,908 (26.8 per cent) were in the country for meetings, conferences, and business deals. Those visiting family and friends totaled 213,417 arrivals, the third primary purpose of touring Kenya. On Transit passengers were 44,620 (5.3 per cent), while other purposes, among them education, medical, religion, and sports totaled 24,356.

The country’s biggest airport and regional aviation hub, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, was the main entry point recording 589,553 visitors. Mombasa’s Moi International Airport was the second entry point with 65,468 arrivals, while other airports recorded a combined appearance of 3, 671 mainly small planes and private jets. Moreover, entries through border points totaled 189,118, with Ugandan and Tanzanians crossing over mainly for business.

Domestic bed nights

Domestic tourism also had positive growth, with bed nights recording a 16 per cent increase in 2023 (January – June), closing at 2.3 million, compared to 2.02 million same period last year.

“The best performing months were April and June, which can be attributed to the Easter holidays and business travel, respectively,” KTB said in its report.

Domestic tourism has remained vital in cushioning the tourism and hospitality industry in the country since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. With international numbers picking up, local industry players are also hoping to sustain the domestic market despite reduced incomes by households in the wake of high inflation.

“Disposable income has reduced with many households seeking to meet basic needs first before planning for holidays. This is likely to affect how the domestic market spends,” said Sam Ikwaye, the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers executive, Coast region.

Global performance and outlook.

International tourism recovered 63 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in 2022, with Europe and the Middle East in the lead, according to the UNWTO.

Significant pent-up demand and the lifting or relaxation of travel restrictions in many countries backed up the stronger-than-expected results.

Approximately 900 million tourists traveled internationally in 2022, double those in 2021 though still 37 per cent fewer than in 2019.

Looking ahead, international tourism will consolidate its recovery in 2023, backed by pent-up demand, particularly from Asia and the Pacific, as destinations and markets open up.

The UNWTO Panel of Experts Survey indicates that 72 per cent of respondents expect better performance in 2023.

However, most experts (65 per cent) also believe international tourism will not return to 2019 levels until 2024 or later.

Based on UNWTO’s scenarios for 2023, international tourist arrivals could reach 80 per cent to 95 per cent of pre-pandemic levels this year, with Europe and the Middle East expected to reach those levels.

However, important risks remain ahead, primarily economic and geopolitical.

“Tourists are expected to increasingly seek value for money and travel close to home in response to the challenging economic environment,” UNWTO said.

The complete recovery, however remains subject to certain risks like a potential economic slowdown amid high inflation and rapid interest hikes, which have increased financial costs and debt levels.

Higher food and energy prices result in lower purchasing power and weaker consumer confidence, which could weigh on travel demand in 2023, especially in spending. The Russian offensive in Ukraine and geopolitical tensions in North-East Asia could also disrupt the normal travel, UNWTO noted further.

Kenya looks to grow tourist arrivals from Africa

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) is targeting to intensify marketing campaigns in order to increase the number of visitors arriving in the country from within Africa.

KTB Chief Executive Officer June Chepkemei said recent increase in visitor arrivals to the country points to the potential to further grow the market through strategic partnerships.

The easing of visa restrictions and enhanced travel trade partnerships have seen tourist arrivals from South Africa to Kenya record a 38pc jump.

“As we take part in the 2024 WTM Africa, we are excited by the tremendous growth witnessed from South Africa and the larger African market that has continued to be an important visitor source for Kenya,” said Chepkemei.

Arrivals from South Africa rose to 37,370 last year from 27,103 in 2022 recorded in 2022.

This was supported by the waiving of entry fees for passport holders from South Africa and other African Nations aimed at boosting tourism and attracting business into Kenya.

“As part of our strategy to grow more numbers into Kenya, we are well aware that the African continent is a low hanging fruit to focus on as we nurture our footprint in a highly competitive global tourism landscape,” she added.

Kenya with its 16 travel trade exhibitors is among top destinations pitching at the three-day WTA Africa expo where at least 7,500 participants are expected from across various global markets. 16 Kenya tourism travel trade

Last year, Kenya attracted 1.96 million arrivals where arrivals from African accounted for 41pc.

KTB further aims to grow Kenya’s market share in Africa to 6pc, buoyed by the potential presented by key events like WTM Africa to make further inroads.

Kenya and Uganda have started an intensive marketing strategy to grow cross-border tourism, which remains a promising frontier.

Uganda, through its consulate in Mombasa, has started the campaign with a four-day   culinary and cultural festival in Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa. The aim is to attract Kenyan and international visitors.

On Wednesday evening, more than 500 local and international tourists graced the inaugural Uganda Festival at Diani Beach Hotel in Kwale.

The Uganda Consul General in Mombasa Ambassador Paul Mukumbya said Kenya and Uganda cross-border tourism has a huge potential.

Last year, Kenya received about 200,000 Ugandan visitors, while at least 500,000 Kenyans crossed the border to Uganda for tourism and business.

“Kenya is the number one source market for visitors to Uganda and for Kenya, Uganda is the number two source market for visitors,” Mukumbya said.

Other events for this year’s Uganda Festival will be held at Ocean Beach in Malindi, Vipingo Ridge in Kilifi and Fort Jesus in Mombasa.

Vipingo will host a cultural night on Friday and the inaugural Uganda-Kilifi Open Golf Tournament on Saturday.

The festival is aimed at exposing the unique Ugandan products to a wider number of corporate Kenyans, youth and other regional and international tourists on the Kenya Coast.

Mukumbya said travelling to Uganda is easier and cheaper for Kenyans.

“Whereas to go anywhere else, you need a visa and maybe an air ticket, for a Kenyan to go to Uganda, you don't need any of those. You don't need a visa. You don't even need a passport. All you need is your national identity card,” Mukumbya said.

He said Kenya and Uganda need to focus on the regional markets to promote growth in the tourism sector in the region.

“That is why we are sensitising more Kenyans and more international visitors to come and sample products in Uganda,” Mukumbya said.

During the Kwale edition, the guests were treated to two-hour cultural dances and entertainment from the Ndere Troupe and Ugandan comedian Anne Kansiime.

The guests had an opportunity to sample Uganda’s cuisine.

Kwale Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo said they will continue working together with Uganda to improve the tourism products available on the Kenya coast.

He said Kwale has investment opportunities in tourism, real estate, agriculture, livestock and mining.

“We welcome you to these opportunities and feel free to discuss with us your areas of interest,” Kombo said.

He said the Kwale government is cognisant of the importance of culture in inspiring socio-economic development.

Last December, Kwale organised the first Kwale County Cultural Festival, which brought together communities in Kwale to showcase their culture.

“We have deliberately supported various cultural groups to improve on their traditional song and dance performances,” he said.

However, visitors were required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), pay $35 online and get approval before they travel to Kenya. The request takes 72 hours to get approval.

There has been an uproar as Kenya has bundled all countries including countries it has had visa-free regimes with like Ghana for decades. Before the introduction of the new system, Ghanaians only needed their passports to enter Kenya and then they are given an entry stamp at the airport. But with the new ‘visa-free’ system, Ghanaians were required to apply for the permit and pay for it.

Soon after the introduction of the system, Kenya gave a waiver to some countries. They were South Africa, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Congo-Brazzaville, Comoros, Mozambique, and members of the East African Community (EAC) regional bloc. San Marino, Europe’s third-smallest nation, was the only other country on the exemption list. While Kenya waived the payment of the fee, travellers from these countries were still required to apply for the ETA and receive approval before they travel. The permit is valid for 90 days.

In addition to Ghana, the other countries added to the exemption list include Boswana, Eswatini, The Gambia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Sierra Leone, Zambia and Zimbabwe. With this new list, the number of exempt countries adds up to 18.

Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Eliphas Barine, had said in March that Kenya would exempt Ghana from paying the fee. However, travellers would still have to apply for the permit online and wait for approval before they travel.
