Online Customs Declaration to enter Indonesia

For those tourists who are going to travel to Indonesia, I would suggest the following to expedite your entry. The more paperwork you do in advance, the faster and smoother your entry will be . Airport wifi can be a bit spotty, so always have screenshots, etc.

Now the customs declaration is necessary to fill it out online , they no longer give on the plane the typical pink paper of before. Then, when you arrive at the airports in Indonesia, there are computers so that people can fill out that form online . So, if you have it already filled, you will also save waiting time in the queue destined to carry out that procedure.

Fill in the online customs declaration form through the Electronic Custom Declaration (ECD) website.

Once you have filled out the form, you will receive a QR code that you must scan when passing through the customs department of the airport.

Remember that the Electronic Custom Declaration ECD can only be filled out 3 days (72 hours) before the departure of your international flight to Indonesia .

Hi, I am already in Indonesia under eVOA, however, under the extend tab I have no options to extend the evisa. Do you know what could be happening? Thanks!

' src=

Hi there, we have encountered the same issue and I have not met anybody that succesfully extended their E-VOA online. Did you manage to fix it? Looking forward to you reply and thank you in advance! Danny.

' src=

I had a “Payment Failed” come up due to sufficient funds to pay for the Visa Extension. That has now been fixed, but I can not see where to make payment on the Extend page. It asks for payment, but no where to start inputting the credit card payment details. Does the page reset after a certain amount of time?

' src=

Eric have you been able to sort this out? I’m having the same issue…

' src=

Hello, the extension of the e-visa requires that you get a picture taken at the immigration offices. If you apply online for the e-voa extension, do you still require to go to the Immigration offices to get your picture taken??? Thanks

' src=

Hi Mark, if you apply for the e-voa online, then do not need to go to the immigration offices to take the picture for the extension. All the process for the extension can be done online.

' src=

I have done my e visa but unable to do for my wife or children. Do we need separate email id for each person. My children are minor. How can we take E Visa for them?

Hi Alex, exactly, you need to create a new account (with different email) for each person, even for the children. Safe trip!

' src=

Hi, I am planning to stay around 45/50 days in Indonesia so I want to apply for the e-VOA and then request an extension (that is cheaper than requesting a 60 day touristic visa). My doubt is about the return ticket, can I enter the country with a return ticket date that is after the first 30 days of the visa without the extension (extension that according your very good article can be requested only once I’m already in the country) ? Thanks a lot for your reply!

Hi Diego, to enter Indonesia with the e-voa visa, the date of the return flight must be within the first 30 days of the visa. Have a safe trip!

' src=

Hi my understanding is a 30 day visa is 500,000 Ind, if the return date is more than 30 but less than 60 days the cost is 1,500,000 and must be completed online now? The issue I am having is understanding what funding details is required and reducing pdf document to 10 mg.

Hi Ray, in this case you should apply online for 60 Days visa. You need a financial proof for funding your stay in Indonesia of at least USD 2000, such as: – Personal bank statement showing the last 3 months period – Latest salary slip – Time deposits You can use any website for reduce PDF documents such a: https://www.sodapdf.com/compress-pdf/ Safe travels!

' src=

Hi! I was searching for info on whether I should apply for the 60-day tourist visa or the 30-day visa because I am going for 35 days. Having read that some people have not been able to extend the visa online, it seems less hassle to apply for the 60-day visa (even though it’s more expensive). If you agree with that, then my question is regarding the financial proof of funds required – is it all of the items you listed (bank statement, salary slip, time deposits)? Or will just one thing like a bank statement suffice? I ask because I’ve just stopped working to take a year off and don’t have any current proof of income from a job. But I do have a sufficient bank statement. Thanks!

Hello Kirsty, I’m glad to inform you that the immigration website is now functioning much more smoothly compared to a few weeks ago. As a result, extending visas has become less problematic. Regarding the financial proof required for the 60D visa, a bank statement should suffice. Wishing you good luck and safe travels!

I’m trying to extend my visa. I got to the payment part and for some reason it didn’t get through so now I’m waiting for them to let me try again. However, at no point in the process did they ask me for my return flight, which is now different to the one I showed the immigration officer so I wonder if the extension will be approved or not…

Hi Tomas, Unfortunately, sometimes the official government website is giving many problems to carry out the extensions online. Good luck!

Am trying to apply for an eVOA – all the details are in the system but never get option to pay. When looking at the application you then see “waiting for payment” but of course without being able to actually set up payment, the application expires.

Hi Martin, try to use another web browser to apply for the visa. Good luck

@Dalila, @Mark: Same here: I got my eVOA but no chance to extend it on https://molina.imigrasi.go.id/ (the extend tab after you login) So what to do?

' src=

Could it be that you cannot extend the 60days visa before the last 30days? Or something in this direction? Also my extend tab is empty (in indonesia since 10 days

Hi Silvan, the 60 days VOA visa is not possible to extend. Only the 30 days VOA visa can be extended another 30 days, and the extension should be made before the first 30 days. Thanks

Hi Norberto,

I don’t understand the answer to Diego. He wants to apply for an extension of the E-VOA because he will be staying in Indonesia for a longer period of time. Logically, his return flight will not fall in the first 30 days, but on a later date. That is why he wants to apply for an extension (which is possible, isn’t it?). Otherwise, what’s the point of an extension? I will soon be going to Indonesia for 31 days and also need to apply for an extension for 1 extra day. My return ticket therefore falls outside the first 30 days. Can you answer this?

Hi Frances. It doesn’t really make much sense, but that’s how it works. What people usually do is make a ¨flight reservation¨ within 30 days just to show proof and then cancel that reservation. Have a good trip!

' src=

Hi, I have the same issue as Dalila. When I login my “Extend” page says there is no data available. I am currently 1,5 weeks in Indonesia with the E-VOA. When will the option become available to extend?

Hi Aukje, Unfortunately, sometimes the official government website is giving many problems to carry out the extensions online. If you cannot do the extension online, you will have to do it in an immigration office or ask for help to a visa agent. Good luck!

Can I apply online for a B211a Tourist Visa 60 days on Arrival then can be extended up to 180days? And do I need a sponsor for the B211a Tourist Visa. I read at https://www.imigrasi.go.id/en/2023/02/08/genjot-pariwisata-indonesia-visa-kunjungan-wisata-tidak-lagi-perlu-penjamin/ that for this visa no sponsor is required. Can you check that for me I cannot get this info from immigration jakarta. Please help.

Hi Clare, for the visa B211 is a must to have a sponsor. At Come2Indonesia we can help you process the B211A visa. Please send us an email to [email protected] Thanks.

I am coming to Bali in May for my son’s wedding. I am staying for 57 days and am wondering what visa to get. Can do a E visa for 30 days and hope the extend button works or apply for a 60 day visa, even though more expensive, not worry about renewing. There’s a lot more documentation for 60days, how do I prove my finances, am a bit worried uploading a bank statement onto the internet. Also don’t think my passport photo meets the requirements, so am I able to take my own photo. Can you apply for a 60day visa in Bali. Thank you for any advice you can give me, am finding all this confusing.

Hi Heather,

Please note that the 60-day visa option is exclusively available online. If you prefer not to submit all the required documentation online for the 60-day visa, you can opt for the 30-day visa instead. Upon your arrival in Indonesia, I recommend initiating the extension process promptly to allow for ample time in case of any issues with the official website. Wishing you safe and pleasant travels!

' src=

Hi. I just arrive to Indonesia with my EVOA for 30 days. I want to extend today, so the “next 30 days” will start to count from the day I apply or from the day my original visa finish?

Hi Jeronimo, the extension will start count from the day that your originally visa expired. Good luck!

' src=

How much time before the trip do you have to apply for the 60 days VISA?

Hi Ada, once the VOA is issued you have 60 days max to enter to the country. You can apply even the day before to enter to Indonesia but is recommended to apply at least 2 weeks before the trip. Safe travels.

Hi – this linked page re: advance visas does not work – I’ve tried multiple different devices, browsers and photos (and yes I have read the instructions very carefully and ensured my photos meet every requirement) but it always returns an “error” message upon clicking “submit”. This has been the case for the past week. Is the website currently down or is it usually faulty?

I’m running out of time to get the e-visa processed before arriving in Indonesia next week, and I need the 60-day one which is only available in advance.

Any tips/ideas please let me know! Eg is there any agent who will be able to complete the form if I cannot? Is there a helpdesk? Are website issues usually fixed within X days? Thank you

Hi Claire, I’m not sure what could be the problem. But if in the end you cannot process the visa through the web, the last option is to process the 30-day VOA upon arrival at the airport and then extend another 30 days within the country. Greetings

' src=

I want to extend my visa (30 days) for Indonsia. However, there is no “Extend button” on the website molina.imigrasi.go.id. There’s only a button for home, information and contact us. Where do I have to click to request the extension??

Best regards

Hello Maxi, first you have to log-in / sign-in into your account. If you applied for a eVOA through the website, you already must have an account, once you log-in, you will see the label EXTEND in the main menu. Best regards.

Thank you very much for your quick response! I already expected the worst and thought I would have to go to the Immigration Office! Can you also tell me when the visa can be extended (how many days before the visa expires)?

Thank you in advance and many greetings, Maxi

Hi Maxi, you can extend your visa once you have entered Indonesia. It may take several days for your application to appear on the EXTEND page. You can make the extension until the last day your visa expires, but I recommend doing it as soon as possible, since the web sometimes does not work correctly and the process can be delayed. Good luck.

' src=

Some people faced problem with the EXTEND page. They have been more than 2 weeks in the country but the visa information still not in the EXTEND page. Looks like the system is bit glitchy.

Yes, many people are having this problem. In these cases, you should send an email to the contact address provided on the website so they can solve the issue, and the visa will appear in the EXTEND tab.

' src=

Hey! Thank you for the article ! Is the extend page issue solved yet ? Do I have to already be in Indonesia to ask for extension of VOA once applied for the VOA / How long does it take to get the VOA online ? Is it immediate ? And last but not least Lombok airport website chat officer says that yes you can enter Lombok International Airport with e-VOA whereas its not on their list

Also to apply to a voa I must provide the outbound is it ok to provide a outbound flight that is 58 days from date of arrival : knowing that I will apply for extension or do I have to provide one that is 29 days after arrival ?

Hi Patricia, if you are planning to stay in Indonesia 58 days, the best option for you is apply online for the 60 Days e-VOA, so you don’t have to worry about to make the extension. Safe travels!

' src=

The 60D e-VOA is much more expensive (IDR 1.5mil) and requires much more documentation e.g. financial proof and photo according to the official site. So wouldn’t going through extending a 30D e-VOA be simpler here and also cheaper as I believe extension is only IDR 500,000.

' src=

Thank you for the article. Very thorough.

We are trying to extend the visa.

We have scanned the QR code on the visa for extension, followed the steps, made the payment, received an email of payment confirmation, but no sign of the visa extension yet. When we check the platform, the extend button is active and we are not sure what to do at this point. Just wait more or the visa extension should have already arrived 3 days after the request? I also wrote an email to the contact on their page.

I can’t log in to the molina.imigrasi platform because they say the email address is not in the system, but when I try to make an account, the platform says my email is already in the system. So no way to log in, but I can still access the visa page through the email I received when I originally purchased the visa, before coming to Bali.

Thank you so much for the valuable information and your time to read the comment.

Hi Flavia, if you got the email with the payment confirmation means that it is already in their system, so no panic. Just keep trying contact with them by email to fix your web profile to be able to download the visa extension. Cheers!

In the end, it worked. There were some issues with the platform for a few days. They also answered the email and I could retrieve the extension from the site. Thank you for answering!

Hi Flavia! Happy to hear that the problem is solved. Enjoy your time in Indonesia!

If I am planning to get an e visa and then an e visa extension (60 days total) will my return ticket still be ok if it is after the first 30 days?

' src=

Hi All, great informative site. I have a question that hasnt came up yet so hoping this would clarify things for people in same situation.

I am currently in Bali with an online 30 day tourist visa. 7 days left till end of 30 days. I could extend but i want to come back for 60 days I have flights booked at the end of 30 days where ill be going to Singapore for 3 days. I want to come back to bali on the 60 day tourist visa.

However, am hesitant to apply online as it says you can only have 1 visa at one time, so if i try and book the 60 days now whilst im still here maybe they will reject it and i loose my money as i already have the 30 day VOA visa active.

Do I wait till i get to Singapore than apply then, but then this could take longer than my return flight back to bali eg 3 days then im stuck without a 60 day visa?

Its not clear how to do what i am trying to achieve so any help will be grateful, thx

BTW, the online application all works fine for me and it is good progress with visa application recommend everyone try it.

Hi Pau, appreciate your inquiry. Unfortunately, you cannot apply for a new visa while staying within the country. It’s necessary to wait until you exit and then apply. I would recommend submitting your application upon your arrival in Singapore. If your stay in Singapore covers three working days, you should be able to obtain your visa before returning to Bali. However, if the timeframe is tight, you might want to consider obtaining a 30-day visa on arrival at the airport. There aren’t many other viable options. Safe travels!

Hi, I have problem to extend my 30 days e-visa online, I was not able to login as it always come back say “your account is not activated “. Can I register another account to extend the visa ?

Hi Fe, if you encounter issues while extending your e-visa, I recommend reaching out via email to the following address: [email protected] Explain your situation, as they are typically prompt in responding to and resolving such issues. Best of luck!

Hi, I got a 30 e-visa without activated my account. Now I can not login into my account to extend it. I did register a new account with different email, but the visa data is not there. If I have to go to the immigration office to extend ,can it be done in 1 day or have to take 3 trips like normal procedure ?

Hi Fe, extending your visa at the immigration office will follow the standard procedure.

' src=

Hello, I have. B213 e-VOA and extended for 30 days a week ago. I have the payment confirmation emails and a download of the PDF extension permit, as pictured in your detailed description above.

However, whenever I log in to the molina.immigrasi portal I cannot see the extended permit in my account, which is making me a little nervous. Should I be able to see the extension permit in the account and download it?

My 30 day visa expired today so the extension should be valid from today.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Danny, if you’ve received your PDF extension permit and completed the payment, everything should be in order.

' src=

Hi! I applied for e-visa extension online, and received a confirmation of the payment, but haven’t received confirmation of the extension. information in my account wasn’t updates either. how much time does it usually tale to process?

Hi Mariia, check the status of the extension again in your account, if still not update yet, you always can send an email to the following address: [email protected] Explain your situation, as they are typically prompt in responding to and resolving such issues. Best of luck!

Hello I have to extend Indonesian visa before 30 days expire. I am on Nusa Penida. What can I do? Thank you My contact What’s up 0038631318144

If you initially applied for the eVOA online, extending it is a breeze through the official website: https://molina.imigrasi.go.id/ . Simply follow the online process for a hassle-free extension.

However, if you obtained your VOA upon arrival at the airport, the extension process involves a visit to an immigration office. To make this smoother, I recommend enlisting the help of a visa agent.

Best of luck with your extension, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Hi there! We are looking to apply for the B211A visa online (2 adults, 2 children from the UK). Am i correct in thinking that you no longer need a sponsor for this visa, and the extension?

the online application also asks for a bank statment for our children, as they do not have bank accounts how do i submit their application online?

Thanks so much for your help! Daniell

I wanted extend help and share my experience to those who’s in doubt.

Like some of you, I entered Indonesia with eVOA (single entry) which we all know it’s valid for 30days. Last week, I tried to read online and search the web. I’ve seen some comments where they’ve tried to use the EXTEND button in https://molina.imigrasi.go.id/ . Same to me, IT IS NOT WORKING. I tried to email their Contact but haven’t received any response yet a different agent emailed me. (no wonder how that agent know that I’m trying to extend my visa 😛 )

The default solution is to go to the nearest immigration office in the home/hotel address you’re staying longer. So this is what I did. 😉

I went to the immigration sometime bet 9-0:15am. The processing is smooth.

#1. Go to the Foreign Service counter. Mention your intent why you’re there. They ask for my passport, return ticket, photocopy of eVOA sticker (in my passport) and a photocopy of my passport. So this is just ‘ASSESSMENT’. Then the staff provided me 2 papers. Application Form and the letter form (saying your intent why you’re extending)

NOTE: Please bring BLACK PEN

After I filled up the form, the staff gave me a number and instruct me to go upstairs.

They have different services offered that is why the area is not crowded. eVOA has a separate counter/floor.

#2. My number is called by an immigration officer. He then read my form and ask questions (about the places I’ve mentioned in the form). So be aware, make sure you know something about the place. This is like mini assessment (again) and interview. The officer already mentioned the extended date and he wrote it in my application form.

NOTE: The officer also ask me for my digital eVOA. So dumb I forgot to print it. But he asked me to send it to the WhatsApp number then he printed it 🙂

#3. PAYMENT. After the assessment and mini interview, the officer ask me to go to the bank (BRI) to pay for the fee IDR 500,000. The bank is located in the ground floor. Please do note, they only accept cash and any local Indonesian Debit card/atm.

After the payment, I went back to the officer as he instructed. My number is no bearing already. He just ask me to come back to him and present the receipt. He is very kind and approachable.

#4. After validating my payment, he input something in the computer. Then he give me (NEW) number. He said that is for the Photo. ANDDDDD he also said that I can get my passport the next day, between 1-3pm in the COLLECTION COUNTER. I didn’t expect processing is fast.

#5. BIOMETRICS. My number is then called. Another officer in charge interviewed me. Like just trying to start a conversation. They’re very pleasant to talk to. She did took my photo and thumbprint and signature.

ALL THESE HAPPEN in just under 1hr. I’m happy with smooth processing.

—the next day– I directly went to the Collection Counter with the payment proof I have from yesterday. The lady said, I need to get number first. LOL. Too excited.

I get the queue number to the Foreign Service counter I went yesterday (the #1). Then go back again to the Collection Counter. In under a minute… I was able to get my passport. 😉

NOTE: Candi Borobudur assembly area has eVOA counter where you can apply to extend your eVOA. Unfortunately, I don’t have my passport when I visited Borobudur.

Hi! I’m going to spend 37 days in Indonesia. I thought to apply for a 30 day e-visa on arrival and later to extend it for another 30 days (60 day visa costs 1,500,000 IDR while 30 day e-visa plus its extension cost 1,000,000 IDR in total). I’ll be flying from Singapore to Jayapura via Jakarta (however in Jakarta I’ll be in a transit area only). Is it possible to apply for the 30 day e-visa on arrival if my airport of arrival is Jayapura or I should apply for the 60 day visa?

Hi Jakub, you still can apply for the 30 day e-visa on arrival. Safe travels!

' src=

Regarding the online visa extention, when I put in my passport info it says that the info cannot be found. Currently it is over 14 days before my visa expiration, would this be a reason behind this message? I have triple checked the information that I have provided and it is all correct.

' src=

We just applied for the tourist visa (60 days) online. Do you know if we can enter the country with this visa at any border or just via airport in Jakarta/Bali? We actually want to cross the border between Tawau (Malaysia) and Tarakan by ferry and hope it is possible.

Many thanks!

Hello Oli, yes, it should be possible to enter from any border. Good luck!

Indonesia Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Updated: May 18, 2024

Indonesia Visa

Indonesia has a fairly complicated visa policy due to the number of different visa types available to tourists. Furthermore, the rules changed after the pandemic began which complicates finding reliable information online.

Between the outdated information, the government’s confusing rules, and the recent introduction of a glitchy online visa portal, making sense of Indonesia visa requirements is troublesome. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place!

In this article, you will find everything you need to know about:

  • Indonesia visa policy and requirements
  • Eligibility for visa on arrival
  • The difference between the various tourist visas and which one is right for you
  • How to apply online, on arrival, or at an embassy
  • Which visas are extendable and how
  • The prices of different visas

Table of Contents

Visa policy.

Only 10 countries are visa-exempt for Indonesia – all ASEAN states plus Timor Leste.

These 10 plus 87 additional countries are eligible to apply for a Visa on Arrival (VOA) or Electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA). These two types of visas (also called B1) are equivalent and almost identical in their use and specifications. Use of VOA or eVOA is only possible at certain points of entry. They are valid for 30 days, extendable once.

All ordinary passport holders except for a select few countries, are eligible for the tourist single-entry visitor visa (also called C1) under certain conditions outlined in detail below. It is valid for 60 days and is extendable twice. This is sometimes referred to as the Indonesia digital nomad visa .

The visas so far mentioned are all single entry. Multiple-entry tourist visas exist but they are not really intended for use by tourists.

Visa Requirements

Indonesia Visa Requirements by Nationality

Each visa has its own set of requirements outlined in its respective section. Nonetheless, there are a few common requirements for all types of visas and as well as visa exemption:

  • Have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport
  • Have an onward or return ticket
  • Enter through a designated port. These may vary from visa to visa.

Your return ticket may or may not be inspected. It’s good to be prepared even if your plans are flexible. Book an onward ticket before you travel for peace of mind.

All COVID restrictions were dropped in June 2023. A vaccination certificate is no longer necessary to enter Indonesia.

Indonesia has dozens of visa types. However, for tourism purposes, there are three main ones: Visa on Arrival (VOA and eVOA) and single-entry visitor visa. Some nationalities can enter visa-free.

Check out the table below for the main characteristics of these visas:

Visa Exemption

Indonesia changed its immigration law in 2015 to give many countries a visa exemption. This was reverted at the beginning of the pandemic. The only countries to regain visa-free access to Indonesia in 2022 were its ASEAN partners and Timor-Leste.

The visa exemption is not extendable and not transformable into any other type of visa. This is the reason why some may still obtain an extendable visa for a longer trip.

Eligibility

Nationals of these 10 countries are visa-exempt for up to 30 days:

  • Philippines
  • Timor Leste

Designated ports of entry

There are 16 airports, 95 seaports, and 11 overland borders that allow visa-free entry. Check the updated list on the official Indonesian Immigration website.

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA) Sample

Nowadays, most travelers to Indonesia obtain Visa on Arrival (VOA). It is the easiest and the cheapest option for most short-term tourists.

The Visa on Arrival is valid for 30 days. The day when you land is considered day 1 and you must leave on or before day 30 (this date is usually stamped on your passport).

The VOA costs 500,000 IDR. It’s payable on arrival in Indonesian Rupiah or most other popular foreign currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, etc), albeit at an unfavorable rate.

Extension

The visa is extendable once for an additional 30 days.

It is now possible to extend VOA online. The system is glitchy and may not be possible to extend online in some cases. In that case, you must extend in person at the nearest Kantor Imigrasi (immigration office). If done by yourself, it takes 3 visits to the immigration office.

Various agents online and offline offer to facilitate the extension for a fee. If you decide to go this route, you will only need to visit an immigration office once.

Eligibility

Passport holders from 97 countries can obtain a visa on arrival (VOA). These are:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Saudi Arabia
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • Timor-Leste
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Designated Ports of Entry and Additional Requirements

There are 15 airports, 91 seaports, and 12 overland borders that allow visa-free entry.

Strictly speaking, there is a requirement to be “financially sufficient” during your stay, but in practice, nobody ever asks for such proof.

Procedure at the Border

When you arrive at the border, look for the designated Visa on Arrival desks. On busier airports like Bali’s Denpasar (DPS) or Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta (CGK), there are often queues from 5 minutes up to an hour.

When it is your turn, give your passport and pay. If you pay in foreign currency, they will do the exchange for you on the spot. The rate is not good.

Then proceed to an immigration desk. Piece of cake, apart from the possible waiting.

Read the Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA) guide for in-depth information including the list of ports of entry, documents requirements and process to obtain VOA it Bali airport.

Electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA/B1)

Indonesia eVOA or B213

The Electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA) is a bit of a misnomer. You apply for it online before your trip, then on arrival present the authorization document and receive a stamp in your passport.

It is a relatively new option, first introduced in November 2022. It is almost identical to the regular VOA – it is the same cost, the same duration, and the same countries are eligible.

The two main ways in which it is different are the way you get it and the way you extend it.

Obtaining an eVOA online

The two official websites where you should apply for the eVOA are the Molina Imigrasi and eVisa Imigrasi of the Indonesian government. Do not use any other websites – they will charge you extra at best and turn out to be scams at worst.

Although you can apply for the eVOA as a guest, I strongly advise you to create an account first. This will save you a big headache if you later decide to extend it.

Applying is straightforward and similar to other countries’ online visa portals. A few things to look out for:

  • Pick the 30-day Tourist Visa on Arrival option, code B1.
  • The address you put doesn’t really matter, just use the first hotel you will stay at. Only write the postcode and the rest should populate automatically.
  • Pay within 2 hours of submitting your application, otherwise, it becomes void.
  • Save the PDF file on your phone to show to immigration on arrival.

I recommend following this detailed Indonesia eVOA article as a guide to apply for your eVOA.

Extending eVOA online

The eVOA can be extended online in less than 5 minutes! No trips to the immigration office or paying an agent are necessary.

To extend, log back to the Molina Imigrasi or eVisa Imigrasi . If you didn’t have an account created, scan the QR code at the bottom of the PDF file and proceed from there.

Once on the welcome screen, click EXTEND, follow the prompts, pay, and you are done!

Double-check the date of expiry of the extension. You must leave on or before that date.

At the border, just show the PDF of the extension confirmation – the officer will check it in the system and stamp you out.

Read the Indonesia eVOA guide for more information on document requirements, application process and the entry procedure at the airport.

Single-Entry Visitor Visa (C1)

Indonesia B211A Visa

The tourist visa, officially known as Tourist Single-Entry Visitor Visa, or C1 is the most popular among long-term tourists and digital nomads. It is initially valid for 60 days and extendable twice for a maximum stay of 180 days.

It is also the only short-term tourist visa option for countries that are not eligible for the VOA or eVOA. The C1 visa is open to all nationalities, EXCEPT FOR:

  • Afghanistan
  • North Korea

These countries need a special Calling Visa.

It is possible to convert the C1 to an ITAS (Limited Stay Permit) within Indonesia. This is viable for long-term residents only.

Obtaining the C1 online

Since July 2023, the Single-Entry C1 visa is no longer obtainable onshore.

This means that you must get this visa while outside of the country (offshore).

The best way to obtain a single-entry visitor visa is through the Molina Imigrasi website . There, the visa is coded as a “Toursit Single-Entry Visitor Visa”.

The application process is similar to the one for the eVOA. Just pick “Tourist single-entry visitor visa 60 days” from the dropdown menu when prompted.

The required documents you must submit are:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • A recent color photograph
  • Proof of having at least US$ 2,000 or equivalent. This can be a bank account statement.

The visa costs 1,500,000 IDR payable immediately after submission.

Obtaining the C1 from an agent

Any agent in Indonesia, especially in Bali can apply for a C1 visa on your behalf. If you apply via an agent, the documentation needed is minimal. That’s because the agent uses their financial proofs instead of yours.

Agents charge about 2,500,000-3,000,000 IDR for applying C1 visa on your behalf. They usually need a picture of your passport ID page and a digital passport-size photo.

In 2022, I used Indonesian Gate to obtain my C1 (then it was called B211A) visa. It’s owned and managed by a local and a westerner. They were recommended by many on the Bali expat Facebook groups.

Obtaining the C1 at an embassy

While the visa is the same, obtaining it at an Indonesian embassy abroad may be subject to different requirements than the one online. It is best to check with the embassy in your country for precise and up-to-date information. Requirements may also be different at different embassies!

The most common additional requirement is a sponsor letter from a registered tourist agency or hotel.

Extending the C1 visa

The C1 is extendable twice for 60 days each. Each extension costs 2,000,000 IDR.

Unfortunately, extensions are not an easy task. They are not quick either. Start the process at least 10 days before the expiry date of the initial visa.

As long as you’ve initiated the extension process, you will not be fined if your original visa expires.

Extend online

Extend using an agency

Many go to Indonesia and don’t want to bother with administration, documents, and mundane trips to immigration. Understandable. If that’s the case, just pay someone to do it for you!

I recommend Indonesian Gate but you can also look online or ask the community in Bali and you will quickly find many options.

You will still need to make 1 trip to immigration to have your biometrics taken.

Usually, the procedure goes like this:

  • You contact the agency and give them your passport. They bring it to immigration to start the process;
  • A few days later they call you to go to the immigration office for biometrics;
  • Another few days later they collect your passport and bring it back to you.

Extend it yourself

If you want to save some money, do the extension yourself.

In total, you will have to make 3 trips to immigration:

  • Bring your passport and fill in an extension application form;
  • Wait for a call and go back to do biometrics;
  • A few days later go back to collect your passport with the visa extension.

The whole process takes 7-10 days.

Read the Indonesia Tourist Visa article for more in-depth information on requirements, documents, application and extension process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need a vaccination certificate to visit indonesia.

No! Since 9 June 2023, no vaccination requirements are in place.

What happens if I overstay my visa?

There is a fine of 1,000,000 IDR per day of overstay. It is payable at the border in cash. Unless you have overstayed a huge amount of days (30+), a fine is probably all you will get – no black stamps, no bans. Don’t risk it – leave on time.

Can I travel inside Indonesia without my passport?

While waiting for an extension, your passport will be at immigration. Don’t let this stop you from exploring Indonesia!

You can travel to other provinces and take domestic flights without your passport. Just take a clear picture of your passport and the visa stamp. If using an agency for the extension, they will also provide a confirmation letter.

Can I travel outside Indonesia and come back on the same visa if I didn’t use the maximum number of days?

No. All tourist visas are single-entry. Leaving Indonesia voids the visa regardless of the visit duration.

Can I enter Indonesia a second time on a new visa?

Yes, you can. That’s called “doing a visa run”.

A visa run means leaving the country and reentering on a new visa to reset the allowed stay. Many visitors to Bali and Indonesia in general do it all the time. The most popular destinations for a visa run are Malaysia and Singapore.

Can I do a same-day visa run?

There are no official rules stating the minimum necessary time outside of Indonesia before you can reenter.

Nevertheless, immigration (both Indonesian and foreign) generally frown upon same-day return. I strongly advise that you spend at least 1 day, preferably 3, outside of the country to avoid suspicion.

What is the best Indonesian visa for me?

Let’s assume you are eligible for all the visas listed in this article. This is the quick answer:

  • If you are going for fewer than 30 days – get the VOA at the airport
  • If you are going for 30-60 days – get the eVOA and extend it online
  • If you are going for more than 60 days – get the single-entry C1 visa and extend onshore

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Indonesia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Indonesian Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Indonesia.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Indonesia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Indonesia.

You can get a 30-day visa on arrival ( VOA ) for:

  • tourism or visiting
  • business or an official meeting
  • procurement of goods
  • official visits or government duties

The VOA costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah, payable in cash or by card. It is valid for single entry only. You must meet passport validity requirements and have a return or onward ticket. Most of the main airports and ports issue VOAs .

You can also apply for a visa at least a week before you leave on the Indonesian immigration website . You will find options to apply for a multiple-entry visa or a 60-day visa.

Extending your visa or residence permit

The 30-day visa can be extended once, for another 30 days, at any immigration office within Indonesia. If you applied online, you can get the extension on the Indonesian immigration website .

Make sure you extend your visa within the initial 30 days to avoid an overstay fine of 1 million rupiah a day.

KITAS extension (stay or work permit)

If you’re a KITAS holder with an expired stay permit, you can apply for an extension from outside Indonesia through a sponsor. The sponsor must submit the application to the immigration office attaching a copy of your passport and proof of your departure from Indonesia. The application is submitted without biometric sampling. The sponsor must report your arrival within 30 days.

Beware of visa scams by fake visa agents who, having taken your money, may fail to provide a visa or supply the wrong visa. This could result in you overstaying and getting a fine of 1 million rupiah a day, plus possible deportation and a re-entry ban. Use the Indonesian immigration website to get or extend your visa.

Visa scams are increasing in Indonesia. Some travellers have lost significant amounts of money. Others have been deported despite paying a large fee to an agent to get the correct visa or extension.

Overstaying your visa

If you overstay your visa, officials will stop you at the airport and issue a fine of 1 million rupiah for each day you overstayed.

If you do not pay, the authorities can detain you until the fine is paid.

If your visa will expire during a period of hospitalisation or detention, contact Indonesian immigration before your visa expires to avoid any overstay fines. The British Embassy in Jakarta can help with this.

Registering with the police

If you stay in private accommodation in Indonesia, you must register your presence with the local police at the nearest police station. You could be fined 5 million Indonesian rupiah if you do not register. If you’re staying in a hotel, you will be registered automatically.

Bali tourist levy

The Bali provincial government has introduced a tourist levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah (approximately £8) for all foreign tourists arriving in Bali. You can pay online or on arrival. See the  Bali provincial government website for more details.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Indonesia, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Indonesia guide .

Departure tax

Airport tax is included in the cost of all domestic flights within Indonesia. For some international flights departing Indonesia, airport departure tax might not be included in the price of the ticket. Check with your airline or travel agent before you travel.

Travel Advisory July 24, 2023

Indonesia - level 2: exercise increased caution.

Reissued with obsolete COVID-19 page links removed.

Exercise increased caution in Indonesia due to  terrorism and natural disasters.  Some areas have increased risk.  Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Do Not travel to:

  • The provinces of Central Papua (Papua Tengah) and Highland Papua (Papua Pegunungan) due to civil unrest.

Terrorists continue plotting possible attacks in Indonesia. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting police stations, places of worship, hotels, bars, nightclubs, markets/shopping malls, and restaurants.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanic eruptions may result in disruptions to transportation, infrastructure, sanitation, and the availability of health services.

Demonstrations occur frequently and have the potential to become violent.  Avoid demonstrations and crowds.

Indonesia’s revised criminal code, which takes effect January 2026, includes penalties for defamation, blasphemy, cohabitation, and sex outside of marriage. It is unclear how Indonesian authorities will implement the revised criminal code.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to Indonesia.

If you decide to travel to Indonesia:

  • Monitor local media for breaking events and be prepared to adjust your plans.
  • Visit the websites for  Badan Geologi  (Indonesian Geological Agency, Indonesian language only) for the latest information from the Government of Indonesia on current natural disasters.
  • Review the  CDC’s suggestions on how to prepare for natural disasters.
  • Be aware of your personal safety and security at all times.
  • Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
  • Follow the Department of State Facebook  and Twitter .  Follow the U.S. Embassy Jakarta on Facebook , Instagram , and Twitter .
  • Review the Country Security Report  for Indonesia.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the  Traveler’s Checklist .

Central Papua and Highland Papua– Level 4: Do Not Travel

In Central Papua and Highland Papua, violent demonstrations and conflict could result in injury or death to U.S. citizens. Avoid demonstrations and crowds. Armed separatists may kidnap foreign nationals.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Central Papua and Highland Papua as U.S. government employees must obtain special authorization before traveling to those areas.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Entry Requirements:  To enter Indonesia, your passport must have at least two blank pages and be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your arrival in Indonesia. If your passport does not meet these requirements, you will be denied entry into Indonesia. The Government of Indonesia will not admit travelers holding the 12-page U.S. emergency passport, issued by U.S. embassies and consulates overseas.

Visa-on-Arrival:  If you meet the requirements, you can apply for a visa on arrival at some international airports, seaports, or land crossings. To apply for the visa on arrival, you must have an ordinary (non-emergency) passport with at least 6 months of validity from the date you plan to enter and the date you plan to leave Indonesia and a return or onward flight booking to another country. There is a 500,000 Indonesian Rupiah fee (about $35). The visa on arrival is valid for up to 30 days. You may extend a Visa-on-Arrival once at the immigration office one week before it expires for an additional 30 days for a maximum of 30 additional days, for another 500,000 Rupiah.

  • Official visit or government duties;
  • Business meeting;
  • Procurement of goods;
  • Official meeting; or

Electronic Visa-On-Arrival:  You may also apply for an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) in advance if you are entering Indonesia at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta or Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali. Check the e-VOA requirements from Indonesian Immigration before applying. To apply for an e-VOA see  https://molina.imigrasi.go.id/ .

Visa:  Travel for more than 30 days and travel for non-VOA purposes, including employment and journalism, requires that the appropriate visa be obtained from an Indonesian embassy or consulate before arrival. If you are traveling on an emergency passport, you must obtain a visa before arrival in Indonesia.

If you overstay your visa, you are subject to a fine of 1 million Indonesian rupiah (about $70 USD at current exchange rates; fees may change at any time) per day and may be detained and deported. U.S. citizens have been jailed for visa overstays or entering the country on the wrong visa class for their purpose of travel . Travelers coming to Indonesia for non-tourism purposes are strongly encouraged to consult Indonesian Immigration’s website. Travelers should generally carry a copy of their passport with them whenever possible to establish their identity and proof of Indonesian visa.

You must exit Indonesia using the same passport that you used to enter.  If this passport is replaced for any reason before you depart Indonesia, you must apply with Immigration to obtain a “special pass” (exit permit) in your new passport prior to departing.

Dual-Nationality:  Indonesia has laws that prohibit Indonesian citizens from holding additional nationalities. If you are an Indonesian with dual nationality, you could be compelled to renounce your Indonesian nationality through a formal act of renunciation. Please research Indonesian nationality laws and consult with a local attorney regarding any specific circumstance.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Indonesia. The Government of Indonesia screens incoming passengers in response to reported outbreaks of pandemic illnesses.

Find information on dual nationality , prevention of international child abduction , and customs regulations on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Extremists in Indonesia aspire to carry out violent attacks against Indonesian and foreign targets, and police have arrested more than 1,200 individuals on terrorism-related charges since 2018. Extremists may target both official and private establishments, including government offices, hotels, bars, nightclubs, shopping areas, restaurants, and places of worship. Be aware of your personal safety and security at all times.

Recent incidents of extremist violence include a December 2022 suicide bombing at a police station in Bandung, West Java that killed one police officer, a March 2021 bomb attack against a church in Makassar, South Sulawesi which injured 20 civilians, and May 2018 bomb attacks against three churches in Surabaya, East Java which killed 15 civilians and injured 50.

Demonstrations are very common in Jakarta, Surabaya, and other large cities, but less common in Bali. You should avoid demonstrations and other mass gatherings, since even those intended to be peaceful can become violent. U.S. citizens have been detained for participating in protests.  Demonstrations may become more frequent ahead of the Indonesian general elections scheduled for February 2024.

Currently, travel by U.S. government personnel to the provinces of Central Papua (Papua Tengah) and Highland Papua (Papua Pegunungan) is restricted to mission-essential travel that is approved in advance by the Embassy. Papuan separatists have kidnapped foreigners in the past and a New Zealand national was kidnapped by a separatist group in Nduga Regency in February 2023.

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime:   In the last year several American citizens were victims of violent and serious crimes in Indonesia, particularly in Bali. As with any major tourist destination, U.S. citizens traveling in Indonesia are especially encouraged to always remain vigilant of their surroundings and read the following advisories carefully. Take sensible measures to protect yourself and your belongings.  Closely monitor bags and luggage and carry only essential items. Take particular care of your passport and bank cards and avoid traveling alone.

Police presence and responsiveness is less than it is in the United States, making it more difficult to report crimes quickly and receive police attention. U.S. citizens often cite language barriers as a major hindrance when reporting crimes.

Pickpocketing, sexual assault, vehicle theft, armed car-jacking, snatch and grab robberies of cell phones and purses, and residential break-ins are common. Avoid traveling to isolated areas late at night. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly vehicles or individuals that might be following you.

Use a reputable taxi company or hire a taxi either at a major hotel or shopping center and ensure the driver’s identity card is visible. If you are booking a car via a mobile app, always ensure that the driver is the same as the person on the app, share your journey with a friend via the in-app option, and know the contact information for the app’s security center. Be aware of drivers falsely claiming to be registered with online ride hailing apps.

Credit card fraud is a common problem in Indonesia. Criminals have “skimmed” credit/debit cards to access and drain bank accounts. Use an ATM in a secure location, such as a major bank branch, and check the machine for evidence of tampering. Monitor your account statements regularly.

Tourists and Indonesians have suffered from serious illness and have even died from "drink-spiking” and drink poisoning incidents, particularly in clubs and nightspots in urban and tourist areas. There have been reports of sexual assaults and drink spiking in Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands.  Make sure drinks are prepared in your sight and be careful about accepting drinks from strangers at clubs and parties or leaving drinks unattended. Tourists have also been robbed after taking visitors to their hotel rooms, and in some cases have found that their drinks were spiked. There have also been deaths and serious illnesses caused by drinking alcoholic drinks contaminated with methanol. These cases have occurred in bars, shops, and hotels in popular tourist areas like Bali, Lombok, the Gili Islands, and Sumatra.

Sexual Assault:  Women travelling alone may be subject to harassment and verbal abuse. Sexual assault, harassment, and rape occur. To minimize the risk, avoid travelling alone, especially at night; remain particularly vigilant in less populous areas; and be careful when dealing with strangers or recent acquaintances. Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum, or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery. Local authorities may not respond adequately to reports of sexual violence and harassment. If you are the victim of a sexual assault, you should report it immediately to local authorities and to the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate General.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable. Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Past demonstrations have turned violent.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
  • Participating in demonstrations on a tourist visa can lead to deportation.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams occur in Indonesia. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Lucrative sales
  • Gold purchase
  • Contracts with promises of large commissions
  • Grandparent/Relative targeting
  • Free Trip/Luggage
  • Inheritance notices
  • Work permits/job offers
  • Bank overpayments

Victims of Crime:

Sexual assault:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should seek prompt medical assistance, contact the Embassy or nearest Consulate, and call the local police at 112. For a criminal investigation to be initiated by the police, the victim must make a full statement to the local police, in person.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime. U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault may choose to be accompanied by a translator.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism and recreational activity industries are unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field.  Water sports, especially diving, can be hazardous in Indonesia with operators lightly regulated and hyperbaric chambers available only in Bali and Ambon.  Traffic is hazardous in Indonesia and U.S. citizens are frequently injured while riding rented motorbikes. Wearing a helmet is required by law. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities, and only basic stabilization may be available. Serious injuries require medical evacuation to another country. First responders are generally unable to provide urgent medical treatment or to access areas outside of major cities. Boat and ferry incidents are frequent; vessels rarely carry appropriate sizes and numbers of safety vests; passengers are encouraged to bring their own. U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage ( http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/go/health/insurance-providers.html ).

Please note:   The U.S. Embassy and Consulates do not pay the medical expenses of private U.S. citizens in Indonesia. It is the traveler’s responsibility to ensure adequate medical insurance coverage or funds for medical expenses.

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to Indonesian laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Criminal cases can take months or even years to resolve, and suspects can be held without charges for up to 60 days, and in many cases longer. Indonesia‘s revised criminal code, which takes effect January 2026, includes penalties for defamation, blasphemy, cohabitation, and sex outside of marriage. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay up-to-date.

If you are convicted of possession, use, or trafficking of illegal drugs in Indonesia, you may be subject to heavy fines, long jail sentences, and even the death penalty. Some prescription medications that are available in the United States are illegal in Indonesia. Some drugs used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are illegal in Indonesia. Marijuana, Cannabis, hash, “edibles,” and products containing CBD or THC remain illegal in Indonesia, including for medicinal purposes. A medical prescription does not make it legal. If you take such products to Indonesia or purchase or use them in Indonesia, you can be arrested and face imprisonment, fines, deportation, or the death penalty. Illegal drug convictions often result in lengthy prison sentences, even at the simple possession level. Indonesian prison conditions are harsh and do not meet U.S. standards. Many prisons are overcrowded and provide minimal services. The costs of basic services, including healthcare, often must be borne by the prisoner.

Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods:  Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • nternational Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  LGBTQI+ status or conduct is not illegal, but local authorities sometimes take legal action against, or tolerate harassment of people engaging in LGBTQI+ relationships or openly expressing LGBTQI+ identity. Some local governments have passed laws criminalizing LGBTQI+ relationships. Same-sex marriages or civil unions recognized as valid in other countries are not legally recognized in Indonesia. The Indonesian Parliament revised the criminal code to include penalties for cohabitation and sex outside of marriage. These revisions, however, will not come into force until January 2026, and how they will be implemented is unclear.

See our LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details .

Sharia Law:   Sharia law is enforced in Aceh province and may exist unofficially or through local legislation in other areas. The law is intended for Muslims and should not apply to non-Muslims or foreign visitors. You should be respectful of local traditions, mindful of social norms, and seek guidance from local police if confronted by Sharia authorities.

Earthquakes and Tsunamis:  There are approximately 4,000 earthquakes per year in Indonesia, or more than 10 per day on average. While most earthquakes are mild, some cause significant destruction and can trigger tsunamis. Tsunami warning systems may not be operable, or reports of tremors and tsunamis may be delayed. Local construction standards are lower than in the United States, and many structures including hotels and malls are prone to damage or collapse in an earthquake. Access to disaster-affected areas is often difficult and assistance from the U.S. Embassy may be limited.

If a major earthquake or landslide occurs close to shore, you should follow the instructions of local authorities, bearing in mind that a tsunami could arrive within minutes. The Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning Centre issues tsunami warnings when a potential tsunami with significant impact is imminent or expected.

Volcanoes:  There are 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Eruptions frequently cause travel delays, displace local populations, and disrupt economic activities.

Environmental Quality:  Air quality in Indonesia’s major cities can range from "unhealthy for sensitive groups" to "unhealthy." Current air quality data for Jakarta can be found on the Embassy’s  Air Quality  page. Tap water is not potable throughout Indonesia and should not be consumed.

Mountain Hiking:  When hiking in mountainous areas, obtain current information on local conditions, travel with a reputable guide, have overseas medical insurance, and carry a local mobile phone. Never go hiking or climbing alone. Particularly dangerous trails may not be clearly labeled as such. Hikers on Puncak Jaya in Papua should have realistic primary and backup plans for climbing down the mountain. Tour operators have abandoned climbers. Taking shortcuts through private property is considered trespassing and is not a safe or legal alternative to a proper plan. If possible, ensure your hiking plans are registered and known to local authorities and/or tourism operators, as this helps identify your presence in these areas in the event of an emergency.

Dual Nationality:  Indonesian law does not recognize dual nationality for adults over 18 years of age. U.S. citizens who are also Indonesian nationals may be required to renounce their Indonesian citizenship and may also be deported.  Please visit our Dual Nationality page .

Travelers with Disabilities:  Persons with disabilities will face severe difficulties in Indonesia as most public places and transportation facilities do not accommodate disabled people. The law in Indonesia prohibits discrimination against persons with mental and physical disabilities, but the law is seldom enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Expect accessibility to be extremely limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Students:  See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:   Women traveling alone may be subject to harassment and verbal abuse. While domestic violence is illegal in Indonesia, these laws are rarely enforced. Local authorities may not respond adequately to reports of sexual violence and harassment. If you are the victim of a sexual assault, you should report it immediately to local authorities and to the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate General and seek medical attention. See our travel tips for Women Travelers .

The Government of Indonesia requires all non-Indonesian citizens entering the country to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Medical Care:  For emergency services in Indonesia dial 112.

Sanitation and health care conditions in Indonesia are far below U.S. standards. Routine medical care is available in all major cities, although most expatriates leave the country for all but the most basic medical procedures. Physicians and hospitals often expect payment or sizable deposits before providing medical care, even in emergency and/or life-threatening situations. See our  Embassy's  website for a list of English-speaking doctors and hospitals, but keep in mind that even in large cities the quality of English-speaking medical personnel will vary and there are often communication difficulties. In remote areas there may be no English-speaking medical personnel. Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Ambulance services are not widely available, and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards. Ambulances are not staffed with trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment. Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:   Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation, which can exceed over $100,000 per person.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.  Be aware that Indonesian authorities may consider some prescription drugs as illegal narcotics. The Indonesian government does not publish a list of which pharmaceuticals are considered contraband, and these decisions may be arbitrary.

U.S. citizens are advised against mailing or shipping by courier any medications to Indonesia. Indonesian authorities pay close attention to packages containing pharmaceuticals and may detain or arrest recipients of both prescription and over the counter medications. Even if a medication is legal or has been prescribed in the United States, it may be considered an illegal narcotic in Indonesia. U.S. citizens are advised to only hand carry prescription medications into the country, in the original packaging with a copy of any prescription. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates cannot assist you with the importation and/or release of medications.

Marijuana, Cannabis, hash, “edibles,” and products containing CBD or THC remain illegal in Indonesia, including for medicinal purposes.  A medical prescription does not make it legal.

Local pharmacies carry a range of products of variable quality, availability, and cost. Counterfeit pharmaceuticals are a significant risk; patronize only reputable pharmacies. Malaria, dengue, Japanese encephalitis, and  Zika virus  are mosquito borne diseases in Indonesia.  Prevention of mosquito bites  is strongly encouraged; malaria preventive medication is needed in some areas. Pregnant women should be aware that Indonesia is a  CDC Zika risk area  and that Zika can be spread by mosquitos as well as  sexual contact . Diarrheal diseases are very common throughout Indonesia and  food and water precautions  are recommended. Rabies is prevalent in animals and animal contact should be avoided.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for information on Medical Tourism, the risks of medical tourism, and what you can do to prepare before traveling to Indonesia.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in Indonesia.

Pharmaceuticals

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas.  Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients.  Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.

Water Quality

  • Tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .

General Health Language

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Chikungunya
  • Use the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended mosquito repellents and sleep under insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets. Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all travelers even for short stays.
  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Resources for Travelers regarding specific issues in Indonesia.

Air Quality

  • Air pollution is a significant problem in several major cities in Indonesia. Consider the impact smog and heavy particulate pollution may have on you and consult your doctor before traveling if necessary. People at the greatest risk from particle pollution exposure include:
  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Traffic in Indonesia is hazardous, congested, and undisciplined. Traffic signals are frequently ignored and often in disrepair. Motor vehicles share the roads with other forms of transportation such as pedicabs and pushcarts. Buses and trucks are often dangerously overloaded and travel at high speeds. Accidents between a car and a motorcycle are viewed as the fault of the driver of the car. Consider these risks before driving your own vehicle, especially if you are unaccustomed to Indonesian road conditions.  When an accident results in personal injury, Indonesian law requires both drivers to await the arrival of a police officer to report the accident.

Public Transportation:   Air, ferry, and road accidents that result in fatalities, injuries, and significant damage are common. While all forms of transportation are regulated in Indonesia, oversight is spotty, maintenance may not be properly performed, and rescue and emergency capacity are limited. Indonesia has experienced several fatal plane crashes and non-fatal runway overruns in recent years. Also in recent years, several ferry accidents and a train collision resulted in dozens of fatalities and even more injuries because of over-crowding and unsafe conditions.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information. Also, visit  Indonesia's national tourist office  online for road safety information.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Indonesia’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Indonesia’s air carrier operations.  Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Since 2014, several private pilots have inadvertently crossed into Indonesian airspace and have been detained and paid heavy fines. If you intend to fly on private aircraft through Indonesian airspace, get clearances from Indonesian aviation authorities before you depart.

Maritime Safety and Security:   Inter-island travel by boat or ferry can be dangerous: storms can appear quickly, vessels may be over-crowded and lack basic safety equipment, and safety standards vary. Ferries have sunk, resulting in loss of life. The Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency records boat and ferry accidents resulting in injuries and deaths yearly. Boats and ferries used in tourism or general transportation frequently break down, stranding passengers or capsizing; not all boats are equipped with adequate life vests. Make sure you are satisfied with safety equipment and life jackets before travelling.

Piracy:  Maritime piracy and other related crimes in and around Indonesian waters continue. Recent reports include thefts of valuables or cargo from boats that are in port and out at sea. Before traveling by sea, especially in the Strait of Malacca between Riau Province and Singapore, and in the waters north of Sulawesi and Kalimantan, review the current security situation with local authorities. Be vigilant, reduce opportunities for theft, establish secure areas on board, and report all incidents to the coastal and flag state authorities.

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Indonesia should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts on the  Maritime Administration website . Information may also be posted to the websites of the  U.S. Coast Guard  and the  National Geospace Intelligence Agency  (select “broadcast warnings”).

In recent years, private vessels have inadvertently anchored in Indonesian waters, especially near Singapore, and have been detained and paid heavy fines.

Different Visa Types for Traveling to Indonesia

Indonesia Visa Types

There are different types of visas available to travel to Indonesia. The visa you require depends on:

  • Your nationality
  • How long you will stay in the country
  • Your reason for visiting

This guide provides information about the various types of temporary stay visas for Indonesia. It aims to help you decide which visa for Indonesia you need for your trip, and the best application method in each case.

Tourist Visas for Indonesia

If you’re planning to travel to Indonesia for tourism there are a number of visa types available. This section outlines the different types of tourist visas you can choose from.

Electronic tourist visas for Indonesia

Indonesian electronic visas have been introduced to facilitate border crossing procedures for foreign nationals.

An electronic visa is the most convenient option for travelers, as it avoids the need to visit an embassy or apply in person at the border.

Passport holders from more than 80 countries are eligible to apply for an Indonesia eVisa . The application process is 100% online and travelers receive the approved visa by email within 2 days.

There are 2 types of online visa available for Indonesia: the e-VOA and the Visitor Visa .

The 2 eVisas are similar— both are valid for tourism and the same nationalities are eligible to apply for each permit.

Check the table below to see the key differences between the 2 online visa options for Indonesia.

Both eVisas are valid for 90 days, meaning you have this amount of time to use the permit to enter Indonesia. After you cross the border, you have either 30 or 60 allocated days in the country.

Tourist visa on arrival in Indonesia (B213)

Foreign tourists from eligible countries who are unable to, apply for an eVisa can get a visa on arrival at selected ports of entry .

Like the e-VOA, the visa on arrival is a single-entry permit for stays of up to 30 days in Indonesia.

When possible, travelers are encouraged to apply in advance instead of on arrival. To obtain a visa on arrival in Indonesia, passengers have to wait in line at the border to complete and submit an application form.

Travelers also need to carry supporting documents in paper form to present to authorities and have the visa fee available.

Indonesian Embassy tourist visas

If you’re eligible for an Indonesian electronic visa —either the e-VOA or a Visitor Visa—it’s the easiest and fastest way to get a visa for your trip.

Applicants do not have to go in person to a government office, as the process is completely online. Travelers are advised to only apply at an embassy if they are not eligible for an Indonesia eVisa .

If you need to get an embassy visa, you’re advised to contact the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate to find out the application process.

Indonesia Temporary Stay Permit (KITAS)

To stay in Indonesia on a temporary basis for work or other approved purposes, foreigners can apply for a Limited Stay Permit Card, called a KITAS ( Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas ).

The Indonesia KITAS is for:

  • Foreign Investors - Investor KITAS
  • Expert foreign workers - Work KITAS
  • Foreigners married to Indonesian citizens and their children - Spouse or Family KITAS
  • Foreign researchers
  • Dependants of KITAS holders
  • Retired foreign nationals - Retirement KITAS

Investor KITAS

There are 2 types of Investor Visa (KITAS) available:

  • Indonesia c313 visa (valid for 1 year)
  • Indonesia c314 visa (valid for 2 years)

Both Indonesia Investor KITAS are multiple entry visas that grant the holder multiple entry and exit rights to Indonesia during their validity

Criteria for an Indonesian Investor KITAS

You must be either a director or commissioner of a company who has invested a minimum of IDR 1.1 billion (approximately USD 72,000).

If you do not hold either of these titles, you must invest a minimum of IDR 1.125 billion in an Indonesian company to be eligible for the investor visa for Bali and Indonesia.

The company must also:

  • Hire at least 2 Indonesian employees (in the area of tax and human resources support)
  • Have a business registration number (Nomor Induk Berusaha – NIB)
  • Hold a business license (Izin Usaha)

Retirement KITAS

A KITAS retirement visa is available to foreigners 55 years or older wishing to live long-term in Indonesia. The visa allows you to stay for up to 1 year.

A Retirement KITAS does not permit you to work or invest in Indonesia.

Criteria for an Indonesian Retirement KITAS

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a Retirement KITAS:

  • 55 years or older
  • Minimum of USD 18,000 in your bank account
  • International health and life insurance
  • Property lease agreement for at least 1 year
  • Willing to employ 2 Indonesian nationals for domestic work

Indonesia Golden Visa

The Golden Visa for Indonesia is another option for foreign investors. This visa type is valid for 5–10 years, and designed for high-net-worth individuals .

To be eligible for the Golden visa, the investment requirements include:

  • Individual investors must set up a company worth US$2.5 million (5-year visa) or US$5 million (10-year visa)
  • Corporate investors must invest US$25 million (5-year visa) or US$50 million (10-year visa) for directors and commissioners.
  • Individual foreign investors who do not want to establish a company in Indonesia can invest between US$350,000 to US$700,000 in funds. This can then be used to purchase Indonesian government bonds.

Indonesia Business Visa

Business visas are available if you plan to travel to Indonesia for business purposes. These include:

  • Conferences and seminars
  • Training courses
  • Business meetings
  • Purchasing goods and products
  • Visiting a head branch

Foreign visitors traveling on a business visa must not engage in any activity which generates income while they are in the country. For this you’d need a work permit instead.

Business visas for Indonesia are available as both single and multiple-entry permits. Both allow a maximum of 60 days in the country per entry.

To get a business visa for Indonesia, you must go to an Indonesian embassy or consulate to apply in person.

Visa Exemption for Indonesia

Citizens of just a few countries are eligible for an Indonesia visa exemption. Passport holders from ASEAN countries can travel without applying for a visa.

Passengers must enter through designated border crossings and meet Indonesia’s visa-exemption requirements.

How to Choose the Right Type of Visa for Indonesia

Choosing the right visa depends on several factors , including:

  • Nationality : Indonesia’s visa policy is based on your passport. You may only be eligible for certain visa types.
  • Purpose of travel : This is the most important aspect in deciding which visa application method a foreign visitor should use. For example, tourists and transit passengers can apply for an eVisa, but foreign investors need a KITAS.
  • Duration of stay :Travelers can stay for up to 30 days with the e-VOA or visa on arrival. A Visit Visa may be required for longer stays.
  • Port of entry : Visas on arrival are not available at every Indonesian port of entry.

Travelers should check all the latest entry requirements when planning their trip to Indonesia.

Indonesia to give visa-free entry to people from 20 countries

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Already eyeing up a winter break in the sun? Indonesia could soon be an easier destination to reach, as the government there plans to ditch holiday visa requirements for nationals of 20 countries.

"We are proposing visa-free entry for tourists from countries that provide the greatest economic impact," said Sandiaga Uno , the country's tourism minister.

France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain and the UK are the European nations on the list, according to state news agency Antara, which reported that the relaxation is to take effect in October.

Australia, China, India, Japan and the US are among the other countries whose passport holders are to get easier access to the 5,000 kilometre-wide, 13,000-island Indonesian archipelago.

Among those islands are Bali, popular for its beaches and party scene, and Komodo, home to the fearsome eponymous lizard. Also popular is the world’s most populous island, Java, which is home to 150 million people and to sights such as Borobudur, the world’s biggest Buddhist temple and Jakarta, the sprawling capital city.

Indonesia’s government is aiming for 17 million tourists in 2024, with 5.2 million recorded during the first 5 months of the year. Such an influx, if attained, would top the pre-Covid lockdown visitor number for 2019.

Of the 16.1 million foreign visitors recorded that year, more than a third landed on Bali, where - similar to sentiments seen in Europe’s big visitor draws such as Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice - there have been grumblings about so-called overtourism.

In response, Bali’s local authorities earlier this year imposed a tourism tax. There have long been calls for tougher punishments for what Antara labels "problematic foreigners," a designation used in the wake of a British national being arrested last month for stealing a truck and colliding with motorists, while allegedly "under the influence."

In April, Indonesian airline TransNusa added routes from Bali to Manado, a diving spot on the island of Sulawesi, east of Borneo and south of the Philippines, and from Manado to Ambon, the regional capital of what were once known in Europe as the "Spice Islands."

The government aims to make it easier to get around the vast archipelago and to attract more tourists to areas other than Bali and Java.
