Manila Malate Church

The Philippine’s local version of “city that never sleeps,” Malate is a district of Manila where you will never run out of activities to keep you from being idle and of things to constantly appeal to your interests. Whether you want to eat, drink, party, shop or even do a staycation, Malate is the place to go.

Malate, Manila is a district where you can experience both the old and the modern Manila. It is bustling in the morning for people who visit the Malate Church or the Manila Zoo. It remains lively in the evening for its variety of popular and hole-in-the-wall bars and restaurants.

If you are visiting Malate coming from abroad or from distant provinces in the Philippines, you can take a flight going to Manila. From there, you will travel by land to reach Malate.

By land transportation

The district is directly accessible from national main roads like the Roxas Boulevard, Taft Avenue and Quirino Avenue. Coming from other areas of Manila or from neighboring cities, you can drive or take a jeepney or a taxi to go there.

The Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) which travels along Taft Avenue is also a way into the district through its stops at Vito Cruz, Quirino and Pedro Gil Stations. Coming from the neighboring provinces like Cavite, there are buses bound to Manila that you can ride.

Getting Around

Exploring Malate is best done by walking if you have the stamina, especially while the sun is still out. Jeepneys and taxis are common modes of transportation within the district, depending on your budget and on your haste to get to your destination.

Tourist Attractions

Manila Bay Sunset

The Malate Church is a popular landmark in the district as an old Baroque-style church in existence for four centuries already. Right in front of the church is Plaza Rajah Sulayman which is a perfect spot to watch the sunset at Manila Bay .

For almost every Filipino, the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden, or simply Manila Zoo, is a common go-to place either for school field trips, family outing, or spontaneous leisurely trip to Manila.

Top Things to Do

Eat your heart out and party all you want in the numerous restaurants and bars saturating the district, particularly in the streets of Maria Orosa, Julio Nakpil, Adriatico and Remedios where you can enjoy al fresco dining, some street dancing, and even live concerts.

Manila Zoo

Take a tour around the Manila Zoo, especially if you are visiting it with your family and you have some kids with you.

Pamper yourself with an overnight or a few days’ stay, or at least splurge for a meal, in one of the high-end hotels in the district like the Manila Crown Palace Hotel or the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila.

Where to Eat

Café Adriatico

As a popular tourist spot, Malate offers venues for different cuisines. Enjoy Japanese cuisine at the Tanabe Japanese Restaurant or at Ryuen Yakiniku. Taste the Spanish dishes at Casa Armas or Korean dishes at the Korean Village Restaurant. For native Filipino food mixed with foreign taste, dine and hang out at Café Adriatico or at the Zamboanga Restaurant.

Whatever your plans are for the night, whether to eat, drink, party, or sing, there is a place for you to go to in Malate. Aside from having an extended evening at the restaurants, you can go to The Library for some stand-up comedy while having a drink or two.

There are KTV bars, a lot of them Korean, where you can sing your heart out. You can also walk along Adriatico and find food stalls where you can further satisfy your passion for eating or simply your curiosity for food tastes.

Where to Stay

After enjoying the nightlife in Malate, stay at the Adriatico Arms Hotel or at the Orange Nest Hotel where you can rest comfortably and get ready for another day to enjoy the district.

If your plan is to do a staycation but not spend too much, check in at D Circle Hotel where you can enjoy a view of the Manila Bay from its Ministry Rooftop Bar. You can also stay at Las Palmas Hotel or The Executive Plaza Hotel with their own restaurant, bar, laundry service and Wi-Fi Internet access which would be more than enough to keep you from staying inside.

Travel Tips

Be mindful when you are taking a taxi to and from Malate. Check that the meter is set to the base fare (Php 30.00) before it runs.

Dress comfortably but to be sure that you will not be denied entry to most bars and restaurants, do not wear slippers or shorts.

Exploring the district is most enjoyably done with friends or family, so make sure to bring one or two along as you plan to and actually go to Malate.

Malate is a popular nightlife and restaurant district in the City of Manila , the capital of the Philippines (not to be confused with Metro Manila, which is also widely referred to as “Manila”). It is part of Manila’s District V, which also includes two other well-known tourism and commercial hubs — Ermita and Intramuros.

Its western border faces Manila Bay and spans a portion of Roxas Boulevard, a beloved spot for witnessing the Manila Bay sunset . Malate is also home to the University Belt, a cluster of well-established universities and educational institutions, making it a popular joint for students and young professionals. The district also hosts the headquarters of government agencies like the Department of Finance, LandBank of the Philippines, and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

Despite the string of restaurants, bars, and cultural spaces that line its streets, Malate remains a humble space for friends to dine and catch up. And what comes after a night of sights, spirits, and snacks? A comfortable place to crash and cap off the night. The good news? Malate has a lot to offer in this regard.

Malate is accessible via jeepney, bus, taxi, ride-hailing apps (car and motorcycle), and train. The nearest LRT 1 stations are Vito Cruz Station and Quirino Station. The travel time from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is 30-45 minutes.

By taxi [ edit ]

The best way to get to Malate with luggage, regardless of what part of the city you come from, is by taxi. You can walk a few hundred meters left till the Circulo De Mundo Rotunda, and negotiate a ride with a white taxi ( ₱200 to ₱300 depending on traffic, time and your bargaining skills). The meter is optional, but if you insist on having it plugged, make sure that it starts at ₱40 . Give the taxi driver not only the name of your hotel, but also the street and the street corner to insure a precise drop-off.

The LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board) has instituted hotline numbers to report errant drivers: take note of the cab name and number. Mall operators also closely monitor the operations of taxis that use their taxi ranks by ensuring that cab drivers do not choose only those passengers bound for nearby destinations.

By train [ edit ]

Malate is also on the LRT Line 1, with three stations (United Nations, Pedro Gil and Vito Cruz) all being about 1 km from most places in Malate.

Malate at its Best

Aerial View of Malate

Hailed as the center of night life in the Philippines, Malate is one of the old districts in Manila that has been known for its wild night life and party scene. The place has a lot of recreational facilities and amenities that will satisfy the needs of nearby residents as well as tourists and guests.

Malate is continuously transforming itself as the center of recreation and entertainment of Manila with more restaurants, boutiques, bars, discos and novelty stores opening for business. The block bounded by the streets; Maria Orosa, Julio Nakpil, Adriatico and Remedios have become synonymous to "street parties," al fresco dining, street dancing and concerts.

The word Malate is believed to have stemmed from the corruption of the Tagalog word "maalat," meaning "salty." Local legends tell that tidewaters from Manila Bay flowed far inland and the seawater polluted the fresh water collected from wells, thus making the drinking water in the area as salty as seawater.

During the Spanish colonial period, Malate was an open space with a small fishing village. When the Americans came to the country by the turn of the 19th century, American urban planners envisioned the development of Malate as the newest and trendiest exclusive residential area for American families. American expatriates and some of the old Spanish mestizo families populated the district in modern high rise apartments and bungalows.

The once exclusive residential areas on the western portion of Malate began to transform in the 1970s into a commercial area with some large homes and residential apartments being converted into small hotels, specialty restaurants and cafes.

Despite the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, visual and performing artists found a haven in Malate during the 1980s and it became a bohemian enclave and safe haven. The western side of Malate across Taft Avenue remains a quiet middle-class area with several apartment rows converted into dormitories for students enrolled at nearby schools.

The district is home to the Philippine's first sports stadium, the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and the country's premiere zoological park, the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden. Promenades and parks by the Manila Bay have been made more convenient and safe with the opening of the Manila Baywalk area.

Well-known Establishments in Malate

In the 1990s, Malate and the nearby district of Ermita had been "cleaned-up" and big businesses and resort hotels have sprouted in the district. Harrison Plaza, Manila's first enclosed shopping center, is located in the Malate district. There is one hospital, the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center, located at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Quirino Avenue.

  • Government offices

The country's forefront financial agencies like the Department of Finance, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas or BSP (Philippines Central Bank) and lending institution LandBank of the Philippines established their headquarters in the district, while the National Naval Command Headquarters of the Philippine Navy, a unit of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, is at the boundary limits of Manila and the city of Pasay along Roxas Boulevard.

Malate is home to several educational institutions such as St. Scholastica's College, De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde, De La Salle University, the Philippine Christian University, the Philippine Women's University, St. Paul's College, and for secondary-level education is the Philippine Women's University-Jose Abad Santos Memorial School, Jesus Reigns Christian Academy and Malate Catholic School. The only public school managed and operated by the city government of Manila in the district is the Doña Aurora Quezon Elementary School.

Malate is also home to numerous elegant hotels and accommodations. If you happen to visit the place and wish to stay for a while, here are some of the hotels that you may check into.

  • Somerset Millennium Makati - No 104 Aguirre Street, Legaspi Village, Makati, Manila, Philippines 1229

Where to eat in Malate for every price point

NOLISOLI

  • You won’t run out of dining options in this storied commercial and tourist district

malate eats

Malate, like many districts within the City of Manila, boasts a rich history. At some point during the colonial period, the district became the center of activity, and was even considered one of the trendiest exclusive residential areas. Eventually, it was transformed into a bustling commercial district, with homes being converted into small hotels and restaurants.

These days, Malate plays host to Manila’s Koreatown. But with its storied commercial heritage, it’s no surprise to find all sorts of culinary discoveries at every corner.

Whether you just need a quick bite, a cozy remote-working spot, or a place to treat the family, Malate has options for every mood and price point.

553 Remedios St., Malate, Manila 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.

You can never go wrong with Japanese food, and with Tanabe’s eighteen-page menu, you’re sure to find something that can satisfy your appetite.

malate eats

An easy go-to would be their bento sets, which, aside from the mains and rice, also come with miso soup and a cup of soft, velvety chawanmushi. The makunouchi bento is a visual treat in this sense, with its blossom-shaped lacquerware box filled with a selection of sashimi, wakame, salad, grilled salmon, beef, chicken, ebi fry, tamagoyaki , and rice.

malate eats

There is also a wide selection of Japanese noodles available. Try the cha soba, a cold green tea-infused noodle dish that comes with a subtly flavored dipping sauce.

The Library Cafe by Gourmet Farms

GF Ramon Magsaysay Building, Roxas Boulevard, Malate, Manila Sundays to Thursdays 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Located within the Magsaysay Building’s library, the eponymous Library Cafe is a cozy spot to enjoy a good cup (or two) of coffee. While the library and its books currently cannot be accessed through the cafe just yet, the spot is very conducive to a caffeinated focus-filled afternoon; take a seat at one of the plush emerald-colored booths and you’ll understand.

Aside from classic coffee shop favorites, they also have a number of exclusive drinks, such as the Cherry Mocha, which will only be available in February. Sweet cherry syrup accentuates the chocolatey hints of the mocha, making it a warm dessert in a cup.

malate eats

Boasting single origin beans and coffees from Gourmet Farms, The Library Cafe offers a unique way to enjoy the classic pourover. Instead of serving them in cups, the coffee is served in stemware akin to wine glasses—but designed specifically to withstand the hot temperature of coffee. On warmer days, you can opt for the Barako Supreme, an ice-cold slush version of the otherwise strong barako coffee.

You can also enjoy a cup (or a cocktail, once it’s 5 p.m.) at their al fresco seating, where you can catch the last rays of the Manila Bay sunset.

Al Bahr Al Ahmar

1535 M. H. Del Pilar St., Malate, Manila 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The sole thing to call you into this roadside Arabic and Mediterranean restaurant is its large white signage, flanked by brick walls. But once you find this unassuming spot, you’ll be treated to a hefty menu of authentic Arabian cuisine.

malate eats

Start off with some adas lentil soup to warm the stomach, then dig into their selection of grilled meats and kebabs. For something hearty to share, go for the chicken Indian biryani—a platter with a generous serving of chicken alongside a bed of golden biryani rice.

And don’t miss the flavorful chicken rogan josh and buttered chicken masala.

456 Remedios St., Malate, Manila 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A mainstay since Malate’s heyday, Wok-Inn may well be your go-to if you’re looking for Filipino-Chinese cuisine. It can get crowded here, so it’s best to go outside peak hours (mid-afternoon would be best).

They’re best known for their sipa, a deep-fried dumpling filled with ground meat, carrots, and chives. It is dipped in a dark, slightly sour sauce (likely a mix of soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar) that comes served at each table.

malate eats

The dumplings are also made fresh in-house daily. If you’re lucky, you can probably even see the staff rolling up these little dumplings when you visit.

Jim’s Pares Mami

1739 Maria Orosa St., Malate, Manila Open 24 hours

Considered a legend in the neighborhood, this two-decades-old pares joint is actually located in front of a carwash. Jim’s Pares Mami is a standing dining spot, meaning you get your food right after ordering at the front counter, and then find a space along their many stainless steel tables.

malate eats

It’s quick service and quick dining, but definitely more filling and substantial than your popular fast food joint. They only serve two dishes here: pares and mami, as their name states.

Each bowl of pares comes with slow-cooked beef topped with mixed cabbages and leeks, then doused in soup. You can order a set that comes with rice and egg. Best to wash down the piping hot pares with ice-cold water or soda straight from the ice box.
