About 21 km from Kashid Beach, this fort is surrounded by the turquoise-coloured waters of the Arabian Sea. Dating back to the 15th century AD, built under the rule of Emperor Malik Amber, the structure sports an enchanting entrance to the fort depicting a carving of a tiger trapped by six elephants. Kolaba fort.

One of the weekend getaways near Mumbai, Alibag is approachable either by road or by a ferry from the Gateway of India in South Mumbai. For those with an interest in history, this holiday site even has an old fort that was built during Shivaji’s rule.

Murud Janjira Fort

Located off the coast of the Murud village near the Arabian Sea, Murud-Janjira fort is one of the strongest and beautiful marine forts of India. Around 55 km from the popular town of Alibag in Raigad district, Murud-Janjira fort is a very popular historic fort. With the Arabian Sea on all the four sides, this mighty fort has stood for centuries and is a symbol of the brave Marathas of the region. The fort is around 50 feet in height and is regarded as an ancient architectural marvel.

The name Murud-Janjira originates its name from the Arabic word ‘Jazeera’ meaning “Island”. One can take a boat from the Rajapuri Jetty to reach the fort. The fort was originally built by the Sultans and later various modifications were done by the Marathas. The fort was a full-fledged living fort with natural lakes, offices, palaces, religious centers in it. During the times of conflicts, the roof of the fort was used as a watchtower. Now the roof provides a splendid view of the blue, crystal clear water of the Arabian Sea and golden sands of Murud Beach. 

In the Murud-Janjira Fort, there were around 500 cannons that were used in fights. Now, only a few cannons exist and are very popular among visitors. Other than that, the fort has housed some of the beautiful tombs, water tanks, and a few stone sculptures. The very popular gate of the fort is the entrance gate which is known as “Sher Darwaza” (Tiger’s Door) with a small sculpture of six elephants and a tiger.

1. Murud Janjira Fort

Located about 54 km from Alibaug, the fort is spread over a total area of 22 acres and was originally a wooden structure. It was later renovated and given its present form by Sidi Suri in the 17 th century. The stone cutting in the main passage is a sight to behold and there are six elephants and tiger here that are really life size. There are 23 bastions in all and they are all about 30 to 40 feet high and still very much strong. There are also a number of guns, of which the main ones are named Kalal Bangadi, Landa Kasam, and Chavi. There is also a small door towards the ocean, which was used as an escape during invasions. There is no entry fee here.

2. Alibaug Beach

If you love the sea, then you have to visit Alibaug Beach. It is one of the prime tourist attractions here and a major picnic spot in Alibaug. You can catch a glimpse of the wonderful Colaba fort from here and one can also take a boat ride to the fort. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh which is 400 years old and you can simply while away your time here by drinking coconut water and eating Vada Pav. The beach can be reached easily from Mumbai by a ferry.

3. Kihim Beach

The cool breeze and the beautifully dreamy ambiance in the evenings is what defines Kihim Beach. The shore is wonderful because the waters here are very clear and considered perfect for swimming. The shore is known especially for its great Indian restaurants which sell a variety of food items, most of them vegetarian. The Kihim Shore is 12 km from ST Stop. You can witness a large number of flora and fauna here including some rare species of butterflies.

4. Murud Beach

For those who cannot get enough of the sea, Murud Beach should be the next destination and this beach is quite unique because of the presence of Black Sand. Those who are on the lookout for exciting places in Alibaug will love this place, especially adventure lovers. There are a number of water sports here that one can indulge in and the boat rides are loved by all. The picaresque beach also makes for a great spot for photography. A 300 year old fort, known as the Durum- Janjira Fort is also located here.

5. Mandwa Beach

Considered as the finest of the beaches in the vicinity, the Mandwa Beach is an exceptionally beautiful beach and is considered one of the best tourist destinations in Alibaug. The weather is always pleasant here and the chirping of birds can be heard all day. One can see the Gateway of India from the beach, which makes it so special. There are large orchards of coconut trees that form a lovely backdrop.

6. Kolaba Fort

The Kolaba Fort is still considered mysterious and the stories surrounding the fort are what makes it so attractive. It is quite an experience to explore this fort and it is located just a couple of kilometers away from the shores of Alibaug. The fort itself is about 25 feet high and there are two main entrances to the fort, one of them from towards the water. This gate is difficult to access during the monsoons. Another attraction is the Siddhivinayak temple which is situated inside the fort. Entry is only INR 5 and the fort is open from 9 am to 6 pm.

7. Kashid Beach

Kashid Beach is considered to be the cleanest in the region and not without a reason. One can swim in the clean and fresh waters here and the air is beautifully clean. There are a number of Casurina trees lining the beaches and tourists love walking through them. Although the beach is about 30 km from the main city of Alibaug, the trip is worth it. There are also a number of provisions for engaging in a number of water sports here.

8. Nagaon Beach

If you are a lover of adventure water sports, then the Nagaon Beach is sure to appeal to you. The beach has an amazing grove of Cypress trees and the waters here are crystal clear. The beach is about 3 km long and all along the beach there are activities like snorkeling and scuba diving taking place. The coral reefs here are magnificent and are quite a sight. The sunset at the beach is particularly stunning because of the wonderful orange hue that drenches the beach.

9. Kanakeshwar Forest

Touted as one of the most famous tourist places in Alibaug, the forest has a very rich collection of flora and fauna and the climate here is very cool. In fact, the weather is perfectly impeccable throughout the year and visiting the forest during the monsoons also brings out its wild beauty. The beach is located on the Konkan coast and what makes the tourists come here more often is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the hill bear Mapgaon village, one has to climb 750 steps to reach the temple that is located at a height of 1200 feet.

10. Khanderi Fort

Considered quite an ancient tourist spot in the region, the Khanderi Fort, formally known as the Kanhoji Angre Island, was built by Shivaji and is located about 5 m from the south of Maharashtra and it is about 20 km south of Mumbai. Another fort, known as the Underi Fort and is considered to be sister fort, is also located close by.

11. Revdanda Fort

The Revdanda Fort is located by the Revdanda Village is and it is about 17 km away from Alibaug. The beach has the breeze blowing from the direction of the fort, which is very stunning. There are plenty of coconut trees to be seen here, along with beetle nut plantations. A rare species of plants, known as the Bakuli in local language, is also grown here and lends a very beautiful fragrance to the region. The fort itself is quite an impressive architecture and is a joy to explore.

12. Akshi Beach

Located very close to the main town of Alibaug, the Akshi Beach is long and has clear golden sand that seems to blaze with a golden hue during sunrise and sunset. The beach itself is lined with Suru trees and it also happens to be one of the most isolated beaches here. So if you are on the lookout for some secluded spot, away from tourists and weekenders, then you have to visit this beach. The main attraction here is to see the local people go about their daily work.

13. Varsoli Beach

Located about 3 km from the Alibaug Bus Depot, this is one of the easiest beaches to reach and one of the reasons why it remains crowded for the major part of the year. The white sandy beaches are however, very pristine and it is a joy to catch a glimpse of the sea from here. You can simply sip of the drinks and coconut water available on the shore, and the mouthwatering food sold in the shacks here and just has a wonderful time with your friends and family.

14. Rewas jetty

The Rewas jetty is the main point of the Mumbai Launch Service and is located just 23 km from Alibaug. There are jetty services available from many areas in and around Mumbai and Alibaug from here and it is why the place is a little crowded. In fact, even if you do not want to travel yourself, you can simply come here and watch the other passengers come and go and you would not even realize how time passed. There are many bungalows belonging to celebrities here. Vacationers come here almost round the year.

15. Magnetic Observatory

Established in the year 1904, the Observatory was established by the British and is one of the kind in Asia, and one of the only 13 present in the rest of the world. The magnetic observatory provides geomagnetic data and is the foremost of such observatories around the world. There are two buildings housed here and the first of them has the magnetometers that record the geomagnetic fields and the second has precision recording instruments which provides data for geomagnetic storms. A trip here is very interesting and educational.

1. Jim Corbett National Park

Spread over an area of 520 square km, India’s oldest national park at Jim Corbett, boasts a rich population of animal and plant life, and has now been incorporated as part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve. The national park is well known for the Royal Bengal tigers, Indian elephants, hornbills, leopards, gharials, and other animals and birds. The national park comprises lush grasslands, thick Sal forests, multiple riverines, small hills and several lakes sprinkled over its vast expanse. Jim Corbett National Park makes for an off-beat summer travel experience in India, allowing you to indulge in jungle safaris, bird-watching, camping, river-rafting, rock-climbing, and trekking, placing you in the lap of nature and its wild beauty.

Located an hour away from Nainital, the lake town of Bhimtal is a less popular but equally serene destination. Sitting splendidly amidst the mountains, you can row past the water on a wooden boat on Bhimtal Lake and explore the aquarium that has been developed on the small island that lies at the lake’s centre. The region has a couple of other water bodies for you to make pit stops at, including Victoria Dam and Nal Damyanti.

With a small population and the air of a hamlet, Bhimtal is an ideal summer destination for you to unwind.

3. Mussoorie

Mussoorie has long held the title of the “Queen of Hills” and with good reason. Located at an easy distance from the capital of Dehradun, Mussoorie lies at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas and has all the qualities of a summer destination. Spend your time taking leisurely strolls around Mall Road, Company Garden or an active hike up to Lal Tibba, the highest point in Mussoorie which offers a bird’s eye view over the town and the surrounding mountain ranges. You can also make a short trip to Kempty Falls, which lies 15km away, where the gushing water will refresh you quite literally!

If you want to go further away from the urban landscape, head 38 km away from Mussoorie to Kanatal, a small village and hill station in Uttarakhand for an authentic off-the-grid experience. Revel in the elementary experiences of walking through grasslands, forest trails, and apple orchards, breathing in the pollution-free crisp mountain air, fishing by the streams, and enjoying a clean and organic diet.

Pine trees line the narrow pathways around Kanatal, allowing you to immerse in nature and truly get away from the heat and bustle of city life.

5. Pahalgam

Pahalgam attracts a healthy number of tourists every summer owing to its verdant green meadows and crystal blue lakes. Lying at a distance of 90 km (2.5 hours) away from Srinagar, Pahalgam makes for an ideal destination. Embark on hikes through the valleys of Aru, Chandanwari, and Betab, with their pristine hill slopes and gushing rivers, and visit the meadows of Baisaran, which has lovingly been nicknamed the “Switzerland of India”, ensconced by snow-clad mountains and pine forests. Sheshnag and Tulian Lake are a must-visit for everyone travelling to Pahalgam in the summer, and the adventurous ones can even opt for river rafting! Pahalgam is also the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, thus, making it a favourite among travellers and pilgrims alike.

Conveniently accessible from Delhi, Rajasthan’s “Pink City” is a great destination for a summer weekend trip in India. A history and architecture buff’s paradise, Jaipur’s list of things to do, see, and shop runs long. Spend your days hopping from one beach to the next, from Nagon to Kahid, Varsoli to Akshi, Mandwa to Murud and several other beaches that dot the Konkan coastline of Alibaug. The beaches are great for those who love a warm summer trip that’s close to the city, which is made even better by the wide variety of scrumptious seafood that is made freshly available.

8. Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is a hill town in the Western Ghats and lies 230 km (5 hours) south of Mumbai. The town is abundant in hilltops, viewpoints and valleys from which you can watch the sunrise and sunset, including Wilson’s Point and Arthur’s Seat. Boating on the man-made Venna Lake is a must-do when in Mahabaleshwar, along with a visit to the roaring Chinaman’s and Lingmala Waterfalls.

You can also trek through the village of Tapola, or explore the forts set atop Mahabaleshwar’s cliffs.

9. Lonavala / Karjat

Lying at a comfortable distance of 82 km (1.5 hours) from Mumbai and 65 km (1 hour) from Pune, Lonavala is the nearest go-to summer destination for folks from either cities. Along with the neighbouring twin hill station of Khandala, Lonavala is set atop the lofty Western Ghats, offering jaw-dropping views from its multiple cliff-top viewpoints such as Tiger’s Leap and Rajmachi Fort. The region turns lush with the early onset of monsoon and offers much-needed respite from the sultry heat of Mumbai and Pune.

While you’re in the area, you can also travel 34 km north to Karjat, well-known for the host of adventurous activities it offers, such as the Kothligad Trek up to Perch Fort and rafting through the rivers that run between the valleys of the Sahyadri hills.
