Modern Racing's new custom-length control-arms for long-travel struts feature a robust and lightweight construction. Our Titanium control arms save over a pound of unsprung weight!

These kits arrive with longer than standard arms, allowing you the ability to cut-to-length and weld yourself. 

Kit Includes:

  • X2 Pre-Welded control arm and pivot-ball assembly
  • X2 Strut sleeve/nut
  • X4 Un-Welded threaded sleeves

Designed with the new Strange Ultra strut and Penske long-travel shocks in mind (Not compatible with Strange GT or Sportsman strut) , these new control arms are available in either Titanium or 4130 Chromoly Steel. The Titanium hails from American-supplier TMS Titanium, used by top teams in drag racing and NASCAR.

Our chassis tuners discovered an issue with the pivot ball in a standard control arm when testing the new Penske long-travel struts. The strut was making contact with the outside of the pivot ball cage. It caused damage to the strut and control arm, put the suspension in a bind, and restricted the strut from full motion. However, our control arms eliminate all of these problems. Constructed in house by our chassis builders, all control arms are hand TIG welded.

You can reuse your rod ends or purchase new ones with the kit (see drop down option). These are high-quality Teflon-lined 1/2 X 1/2-20 RH male rod ends.

New Product! Limited quantities available. Looking for more height and more clearance for your upper control arm? Suspension Maxx has the solution, with a fully tubular robust control arm. Engineered to give added ride height and added upper control arm clearance.  Fabricated from 1-3/4" x 3/16" wall, 80,000 tensile strength DOM tubing and weighing in heavier than OE cast design. We use high density polyurethane control arm bushings, with grease able design for a quite long life. Extra large control arm sleeves inside the control arm bushings to maximize clamping force. The Suspension Maxx MAXX travel upper control arms also comes with press in MOOG k6696 ball joints that will operate trouble free for thousands of miles. Don’t be fooled by uni- ball designed upper control arms, they are great for climates with low precipitation and occasional use.  But for a daily driven pickup, we believe the press in OE style ball joints is proven to last and hold up even in the most extreme conditions. All components are proudly made in the USA! Call for more info. We are also including our Stage 2 diff kit that will drop your front Differential an addition 3/8”.

What is the difference between stage 1, stage 2 leveling kits?

Your factory length shocks can be reused with our stage 1 kit. The Bilsteins 5100   front shocks 24-253161   are a stock length and require a shock extension that is included with our kit. Bilstein does not offer a 2-3" longer shocks, so you must use the supplied shock extensions.

The FOX 2.0 part number 980-24-189 is an extended length and is designed to be used on 2-3" leveling kits.   Another difference between the Bilstein and Fox is the manufacturer limited warranty. The Bilstein 5100 shocks are covered by Bilstein's limited lifetime warranty. The Fox has a 1-year limited warranty and can be rebuilt/serviced with new seals and oil.

Is there any cutting or grinding required to install the Stage 1 & Stage 2 leveling kits?

The secondary Diff drop is optional and you can install our kit without it if you do not feel comfortable doing the modification. This is an additional diff spacer to lower the differential housing inside the cross-member. Giving you the maximum amount of diff drop for the best possible CV axle angle.

Why do I need Upper Control Arms?

The factory Control Arms, with flat, single plane has several limitations. The factory geometry limits downward suspension travel at close to 2.5” of lift from stock. This is done to protect the shock absorbers and drive axles.   Using our Stage 1 or stage 2 kit, we have already addressed these issues with extended the shock absorbers and lowering the front differential. The new MAXX travel A-arm is designed to have additional travel at your new lifted ride height. Working great for 2- 3” of lift over stock.   With improved ball joint angle from the arced geometry, you will get thousands of miles of ball joint life from the addition of the MAXX travel upper control arms that we include in our stage 1 & 2 kits.

What size tires can I run on my 2015-2019 Chevy or GMC 2500 with your stage 1?

So many factors play a key role in choosing the right size tire. It really boils down to choosing the right wheel. If you choose the wrong wheel specs you will find very few tires may work with that combination. Stock wheels are normally 8" wide with a high positive   +44 offset.     If you are going to an aftermarket wheel we recommend a 9" wide wheel for the best fit and clearances with a positive +18 offset.   With this combo or the factory wheel, you can clear up to a 35" x11.50" tire.   Some customers have also had success with the 35" x 12.50" tire but I prefer the 11.50 option. Listed below are some great sizes.

295/65/20 = 35.1" X   11.6"

275/65/20= 34.1" X 10.8"

295/70/18=34.3" X 11.6

285/75/18= 34.8"X 11.2"

If you do choose to use a 10" or 12" wide wheel with Negative offset in combination with our stage 1 or 2 kits we strongly suggest you stick to a 33" diameter tire.

How long does it take to install this kit?

As far as labor to install this kit. 3.0 -5.0 hours for installation + alignment.

What makes your kits different from the cheaper kits on the market?

Our kits are 100%   made in the USA and offer the highest quality components and craftsmanship.   Each tubular A-arm is formed from 3/16" wall x 1-3/4"   DOM tubing and tig welded for strength and durability.   We use 3/4 ton Moog factory press in ball joints that are designed to clear the factory wheels with up to a 35" tire.   We build our parts to the highest standard not down to a price.   Yes, there are cheaper kits out there, but I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for and nothing is free.

Will removing the material from the differential have any affect on my warranty if any future warranty work would be necessary? Sean Horn - --> February 12, 2020 12:26am

No grinding is required on 2020+ models.  The secondary differential spacers bolt directly in and require no modifications on 2020 model year trucks.

Ultimate Guide To Lower Control Arms

TOTAL CHAOS upper control arms (UCAs) are a no-brainer when it comes to gaining suspension travel and optimizing your steering and suspension geometry. But you might not be as familiar with their stock length lower control arms (LCAs).

What Is A Lower Control Arm?

Upper and lower control arms are the suspension components that connect from the frame to the steering knuckle and allow the suspension to cycle up and down. The coil over shocks bolt to an upper shock mount off the frame and to the lower control arm to control the suspension movement. Spring rates and shock valving provide the dampening control on your vehicle.

How Can You Tell If An OEM Lower Control Arm Is Bad?

Stock control arms use rubber bushings at the frame end and a tapered ball joint at the knuckle. Ball joints and bushings wear out over time, and with heavy off-road use some lower ball joints are prone to failure. Sloppy steering and uneven tire wear are common when these parts become worn out or damaged. Factory lower control arms must be replaced when they become worn, the bushings cannot be replaced.

What Happens If A Lower Control Arm Breaks?

The lower ball joints are a common failure point. When the ball joint fails and separates it causes loss of control to the vehicle and significant damage to your axle, control arm, and knuckle when the tire gets yanked rearward under the vehicle.

How Do You Remove And Replace A Lower Control Arm?  How Much Does That Cost?

There are several components tied into the lower control arm – the coil over shock, steering knuckle, bump stop, and sway bar end link (or KDSS link) are all connected. Installing new control arms does not involve any welding or fabrication, but mechanical experience is highly recommended.  This can be performed in your driveway with the proper hand tools, air tools can make the job much easier and save you some time. If you pay a shop to perform the installation expect to pay for approximately five hours of labor.

Do I Need An Alignment After Replacing An LCA?

TOTAL CHAOS lower control arms can be installed with simple hand tools, but you will need an alignment after installing them. When replacing lower control arms this is the ideal time to install a set of TOTAL CHAOS weld-on lower control arm cam tab gussets to keep your alignment cams in spec.

What Advantages Do TOTAL CHAOS Lower Control Arms Provide?

Rubber bushings are replaced with urethane bushings to provide better off road trail handling and steering response. TOTAL CHAOS lower control arms are fully serviceable and far more durable upgrading lower ball joints to 1-inch stainless steel uniball’s. Less bushing deflection allows the vehicle steering to be more responsive at higher speed on and off road. The uniballs are not the only strength improvement, depending on the what version of LCA you order each is 100% hand crafted from boxed chromoly or steel and internally gusseted to withstand even the hardest of hits.

All suspension includes a three stage powder coat process in distinctive TC silver with a clear coat finish for long lasting good looks. TOTAL CHAOS lower control arms come with grease zerks for easy maintenance of the bushings to ensure long life and easy maintenance. When it is time prep your equipment and you need to replace a uniball or bushing, TOTAL CHAOS stocks all replacement parts for easy service at home.

Do TOTAL CHAOS Lower Control Arms Retain Factory Geometry?

Yes. Our lower control arms are designed to replace your factory arm with all the added upgrades and features mentioned above. However, some applications we have increased the caster a few mm, just enough to assist in aligning your vehicle with an aftermarket performance lift. Our modifications are minimal to ensure the life of your steering and 4wd components is not compromised. We designed the lower control arms so that they can be installed as an upgrade with all your original factory suspension components we and prefer to trim sheet metal when necessary to prevent tire contact in your wheel well.

There are some companies who offer lower control arms that move the mounting point for the knuckle forward, claiming that this maximizes your tire clearance. However, there is much more component geometry changes needed. By changing the caster that drastically to try and shove a larger tire in the wheel well it starts a domino effect with regards to the steering and suspension geometry that can negatively impact clearance of your tie rod ends, steering rack, and CV axles.

Standard Series versus Expedition Series

Expedition Series lower control arms have the uniball housed in a billet CNC machined cup that is integrated into the boxed arm. This version maximizes ground clearance and turning radius.  The Expedition Series TOTAL CHAOS lower control arms have reinforced steering stops to retain the factory turning radius. The Expedition Series LCAs also have a pocked added at the shock mount location to maximize clearance and allow for a wider range of aftermarket shock options. This also includes shocks with rubber bushing lower rod ends and 3.0” diameter shocks.

Expedition Series LCAs are made from 4130 chromoly, while the Standard Series arms are made from mild steel. These differences give the Expedition Series LCA a substantial weight savings over the Standard Series.

TOTAL CHAOS Standard Series lower control arms were originally designed for the US Military, which came with some specific requirements.  First, they had to be made in the USA, which was never an issue since we make all of our products in house at our California headquarters.  Second, they had to be bolt-on with no modifications.  As a result, the Standard Series Arms use a two-bolt billet machined uniball adapter that bolts to the factory spindle. This adapter results in a loss of ground clearance when you compare it to the Expedition Series.

TOTAL CHAOS LCAs have a pocket to accept coilover eyelets and can be equipped for single or dual shocks.

Why Run A Dual Shock Setup?

Dual shock applications provide more damping to control your wheel movement in harsh off road conditions. Most users report that they don’t mind the removal of the sway bar if a secondary shock is installed. The second shock does a great job of controlling body roll when cornering.  You can still run a sway bar and install the secondary shocks.

Why Are Wheel Spacers Required For Dual Shock Applications?

The secondary shock tab location on the lower control arm will contact the back of the wheel and or the sidewall of your tire without installing a set of wheel spacers. Even if there is no secondary shocks installed a wheel spacer must be added. Just like TOTAL CHAOS products, Spidertrax wheel spacers are engineered to exacting standards and crafted in the USA from the highest quality materials.

The Dirt King long travel kit was developed to drastically improve the vehicles off-road handling without compromising its day to day driving characteristics. This suspension system allows for 13.5” of travel and accepts up to a 37” tire. The kit is compatible with 2WD models and 4WD models along with the purchase of extended axle shafts. Our upper and lower arms are designed with 1” stainless steel uniballs for the outer pivots instead of ball joints for strength and increased articulation. This kit is the first of its kind, it’s a complete bolt on application with no cutting or welding to the frame on 4WD models. The suspension system was originally developed for Ram Trucks new concept vehicle, the Ram Rebel TRX which was released in mid-2016. After its amazing performance we decided to put the kit in production and make it available to the public!

Damaged or Missing Parts In an instance where you receive a damaged package a claim must be made with Dirt King. The claim can be submitted by sending an email to [email protected] containing photos of the damaged packages and damaged products. The email must also include your order number as well. Do not discard any of the original packaging or try installing the products.

While every precaution is taken there could be a case where you are missing parts. If this happens please send an email to [email protected] with your order number, list of missing parts, photo of the package or packages, and a photo of the quality control tag located on the back of the box.

If the shipping carrier losses your package please contact Dirt King. A claim will be filled with the shipping carrier. Unfortunately, we do not have much control over this situation and must wait for the carrier to process the claim.

Freight Shipping The customer must contact Dirt King to arrange for freight shipping. Dirt King will palletize the order and the customer can deal directly with the freight carrier if preferred. The shipment can be delivered to a home or business. The customer must be present for the delivery to inspect and sign for the package. Before signing confirm that you received all items listed on the packing slip and nothing is damaged. If you receive damaged parts or are missing parts leave a note on the bill of landing and sign it. Make sure the driver is aware of the situation and signs your copy of the bill of landing with the noted damages or missing parts. Once you have taken possession of the package file a claim with Dirt King by sending an email to [email protected]. Please include your order number, copy of your bill of landing, and photos of the damaged items or list of missing parts. Do not discard any of the original packaging or try installing the products. Dirt King will do everything possible to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

  • Returns are only accepted within 30 days.
  • Product must have been purchased from us and not a dealer.
  • A 3% processing fee is deducted from all refunds.
  • On shipped orders   a 7% restocking fee and a  3% processing fee is deducted from all refunds.
  • Products such as bumpers, hitches, and bed cages that have optional powder coat added are subject to a 7% restocking fee and a 3% processing fee. If the order is canceled before the product is powder coated then the 7% restocking fee can be waived.
  • On shipped orders we are not responsible for return shipping or refunding the original shipping amount.
  • Parts must be returned in the original package and condition as they were sent.
  • No returns on items that have been damaged or installed.

Welcome back to another community poll. This is a column interview Q&A with independent owner-submitted feedback from the overland community – centered around one topic. Each owner has thoroughly tested their products through off-roading or overlanding and gives us their honest opinion review of their set-up.

Upper control arms (UCAs) are a crucial suspension component that is often overlooked. However, they can significantly improve your truck’s overall performance both on and off-road, especially with a lift and larger tires.

Upgrading UCAs unlocks many benefits, including improved suspension travel and increased strength. They offer a wider range of motion, facilitating better wheel articulation and traction over rough terrain. They also help reduce the risk of bottoming out and enhance stability and control.

Why aftermarket ucas.

OME Aftermarket Upper Control Arms

Stock UCAs, designed with simplicity and cost-efficiency, lack the durability and adjustability required for demanding off-road conditions. Typically, manufacturers (like Toyota) make their UCAs with stamped steel, allowing them to keep costs low for mass production.

Upgrades, on the other hand, are constructed from high-quality materials such as DOM tubing or forged steel/aluminum. This greatly improves overall strength and durability. Aftermarket UCAs are built to withstand the stresses and strains of aggressive off-roading, providing peace of mind when tackling challenging trails.

The main pivot point (where the UCA meets with the spindle) is much stronger on aftermarket options. It’s usually in the form of a ball joint or uniball. Depending on your needs, one or the other will be more suitable for your build.

Ball Joints

Ball joints come equipped with grease fittings, allowing for regular greasing and maintenance. This helps to ensure proper lubrication, reducing friction and wear, thus prolonging the lifespan of the ball joints. However, it’s very important that your ball joints don’t dry up, as this can impact the performance of the UCAs. Toyota uses a sealed ball joint which is great for on-road longevity, but probably won’t withstand years of heavy trail abuse.

Uniballs, on the other hand, are found in high-performance or racing trucks. They offer increased articulation compared to traditional ball joints, resulting in smoother suspension movement and improved off-road performance.

While they have their advantages, uniballs may have limited OEM compatibility and require additional modifications for installation. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also required to prevent dirt and debris buildup and potential noise and harshness. Compared to ball joints, uniballs are definitely higher maintenance.

Now, let’s take a look at a few brands that are trusted in the off-roading world!

There are multiple issues with stock upper control arms when lifting your vehicle. The geometry and strength are compromised due to over-articulating the stock arms. DirtKing fab solved this problem by swapping the weak factory ball joints with 1” stainless steel uniballs.

I also chose DK because, at the time, they were among the first to have the inner pivots option of heavy-duty ¾” FK heims for additional camber and caster adjustability. Lastly, I picked these upper control arms because, living in the NV desert, poly bushings tend to squeak a lot and require more routine maintenance.

3. Charlson Carabeo: SPC

When I first purchased my Tacoma, I knew I would upgrade from the stock suspension and eventually figure out how to fit 35″ tires. With that big of a tire size and such little room to work with in the wheel well, I knew a lot of other factors had to be addressed before mounting the bigger tires.

One of those factors was my factory UCA setup. If I was going to attempt to make the bigger tires fit, I knew had to upgrade my UCAs as well. Usually, for 35″ tires on a Tacoma, close to 3″ of spring preload is required to help make some room in the cramped wheel wells of the truck. With close to 3″ of lift in the front of the truck, the factory UCAs are essentially useless, so I knew an upgrade for that component was imminent. I chose the SPC UCAs.

I specifically chose SPC UCAs because they are key to fitting bigger tires on a Tacoma with an extended travel setup. There is only a sliver of space to work with on a Tacoma when fitting bigger tires, so being able to maximize and push the caster all the way forward on the SPC UCAs helps the tires clear the pinch welds and the cab mount (assuming a cab mount chop or relocation has already been done).

Not to mention, they are readily available and quite affordable for what they are/do. They are also very easy to maintain with NLGi #2 grease using the zerk fittings. I’ve yet to have an issue with my set after almost 10,000 miles.

Overall, I would say the performance of the truck on 35″ tires when off-roading has been great with the addition of the SPC UCAs. Plus, their ability to clear the cab mount has been crucial, especially on switchback-heavy trails. I no longer have to stop in the middle of a trail run to ensure nothing breaks off after a few tight turns in the mountains.

4. Alex Lez: Total Chaos

I always wanted a long travel (LT) setup and Total Chaos was the way to go. Also, I needed to upgrade my UCAs because in order to achieve the LT setup, it was required.

I went with Total Chaos because their quality and customer service are top-notch. My first rig also had a Total Chaos mid-travel setup, so I was familiar with their products and company. Now that I have the LT setup, it’s a completely different ride from the mid-travel. The ride is much softer and much more enjoyable off-road.

5. Konrad Chojnowski: ARB OME

Upper Control Arms

I’ve run several control arms over a few builds over the years. Before I had the ARB OME version on my Tacoma, I had a set of ball joint UCAs from Dirt King. Both got the job done well. When I switched to running a BP-51 kit from my old Nitrocharger setup, I swapped out the UCAs as well. While these aren’t the most adjustable UCAs on the market, for the vast majority of users, they will do great. And it is tough to beat the customer service and support from ARB.

I haven’t had any issues after about 9 months. It’s good to note, the ball joint is sealed and greaseable, the inner pivots have held up well, and the powder coat is still good as new. As with any set of control arms, if you want the most longevity, you need to keep up with maintenance. If you’re looking for a solid set, take a closer look at this option.

6. Grant Willbanks: Dobinsons

New Dobinsons Billet Adjustable UCA For Tacoma

This is my 3rd pair of UCAs, and I can honestly say they’re hands down my favorite for several reasons. First off, the new Dobinson Billet UCAs are probably the easiest arm to adjust while still on the vehicle, making it simple for most alignment shops. A simple threaded in-and-out adjustment on the arm lets you dial in your camber. Plus, they use a fixed, factory-style sealed ball joint and factory-style bushings, giving you a total maintenance-free arm. No greasing, no squeaking, no upkeep. And to top it all off, they’re just beautiful. Who doesn’t love a super beefy and shiny billet UCA?

Our Toyota Upper Control Arms are designed are designed to fix the caster when aftermarket lift shocks are installed. These UCAs reduce “wandering” in the vehicle’s steering when lifting your truck 2″-3″.

The Mid-Travel Upper Control Arms are built with a 1″ uniball to get rid of the weak factory ball joint. They are CNC-cut from high-grade U.S. steel and feature high-strength tubular design. Our UCAs combined with any aftermarket coilover shock will allow for up to 1″ of additional wheel travel. CNC spindle adapters convert the factory ball joint to a 1″ uniball to allow for maximum wheel travel.

Solo Motorsports Tubular UCAs come with polyurethane bushings and fit 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive models.
