1. Take the Ceiba to Culebra Ferry

The cheapest way to get to Culebra from mainland Puerto Rico is to take a ferry from Ceiba to Culebra. The ferry ride is just 45 minutes and runs multiple times per day from 4am – 8:30pm. Best of all, tickets are inexpensive starting at $1.00 for children and seniors and only $2.25 one-way for adults.

This makes the trip to Culebra cheap enough for even the budget travelers to enjoy. Tickets do often sell out in advance, so book ahead online to get the ferry you want!

To help you navigate to and from the ferry terminals on the mainland and island, here are their addresses:

• Ceiba Ferry Terminal address: Marina Dr. Roosevelt Roads Ceiba, PR 00735
• Culebra Ferry Terminal address: Pedro Marquez Street Culebra, PR 00775

It’s also worth noting that sometimes you’ll hear there is a ferry to Culebra from Fajardo. This is the Ceiba ferry. There is not an additional ferry at Fajardo.

2. Fly to Culebra from San Juan or Ceiba

The second option is the fastest way to travel to Culebra from Puerto Rico’s mainland, and this is by plane. There are both commercial flights and charter flight options available starting as low as $70 each way. Although, most flights will range closer to $100 each way.

If you choose to fly from mainland Puerto Rico to Culebra, you’ll need to book ahead as most of the planes only hold a handful of passengers. What’s most amazing about this option, other than cutting down on time in transport, is that you will have stunning views of the Puerto Rico islands as you fly to Culebra!

The most common flights options to Culebra are:

• Fly from Ceiba to Culebra in just 12 minutes
• Fly from San Juan to Culebra in 30 minutes from the International Airport or Isla Grande airport in San Juan

To search for flights to Culebra, you can start with your favorite flight aggregator or visit the airlines sites directly as not all airlines will appear in your aggregator results. The airlines that fly to Culebra are:

Unfortunately, the frequency of this ferry does vary. It currently is only running the last Sunday of each month, but it should pick back up in frequency shortly. Not only is this ferry route cheap, but it also helps avoid any backtracking allowing you to maximize your time in the islands of Puerto Rico.

4. Take a Day Trip to Culebra Island

If you’re looking for another alternative to get from Puerto Rico to Culebra, consider taking a day trip with transportation included! This is an ideal option if you are short on time or if you’re unable to find ferries or flights to Culebra.

The best Culebra day trip options are:

• Full day catamaran tour of Culebra from Fajardo
• Flamenco Beach day trip from San Juan which includes flights
• Kayak and snorkel adventure from Ceiba which includes ferry tickets

How to Get to Culebra Island from San Juan

Since most travelers will be trying to get to Culebra from Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, we’ll break out the above transportation options into more detail for those of you coming from San Juan to Culebra.

1. Drive from San Juan to Ceiba + Ferry from Ceiba to Culebra

Generally the cheapest way to get to Culebra from San Juan is to rent a car in San Juan to drive the 48 miles (76 kilometers) or 1 hour and 15 minutes to the ferry terminal in Ceiba, Puerto Rico. From there, you can take the ferry to Culebra as mentioned above.

Do note that only residents of Culebra can take their cars on the cargo ferry to the island. All others will have to leave their rental car on the mainland of Puerto Rico and find a new mode of transportation in Culebra.

2. Take a Private Shuttle or Taxi from San Juan to Ceiba + Ferry from Ceiba to Culebra

If you’re not keen on driving in Puerto Rico, you can take a shuttle from San Juan to the Culebra ferry in Ceiba. There are a number of shuttle and taxi companies that operate throughout Puerto Rico that would happily drive you to the ferry terminal in Ceiba. This will typically run around $85.

If you’re traveling with friends, taking a shuttle will be more expensive, but if you’re traveling alone, you may actually save money by opting for a shuttle or taxi rather than renting a car.

Another awesome time to consider taking a shuttle or taxi is if you’re doing a one way trip. For example, you can take the ferry to Culebra and then fly back to San Juan from Culebra! Make sure to check these options if ferry tickets to Culebra are sold out on the days you want to go!

3. Fly from San Juan to Culebra

The best way to get from San Juan to Culebra is by plane. Unfortunately, it is also the most expensive option. However, it is the only direct route from Old San Juan to Culebra Island, which means going this route will require less planning. You can find all needed flight information above.

Alternatively, you can do a day trip from San Juan to Culebra via plane . This simplifies it even further as you don’t need to worry about transportation or hotels on Culebra Island .

4. Drive from San Juan to Fajardo + Take a Catamaran Tour from Fajardo to Culebra

Another amazing way to get to the island of Culebra is to take a tour from Fajardo. To do this, you’ll still need to rent a car in San Juan to drive the 38 miles (61 kilometers) from San Juan to Fajardo. Once you’re there, you’ll be able to take a relaxing catamaran tour over to Culebra for the day.

Tips for Traveling to Culebra, Puerto Rico

Traveling to Culebra from Puerto Rico’s mainland is a must do if you have the time in your itinerary. If you plan ahead, it’s even extremely budget-friendly with the $2.25 ferry tickets to Culebra!

Here are some additional tips to make your trip to Culebra fun, affordable, and stress-free!

Book transportation to Culebra in advance.

No matter which mode of transport you plan to use to get to Culebra, you’ll need to book in advance. Ferry tickets to Culebra sell out. Flights to Culebra sell out. Tours to Culebra sell out. Once you know your travel dates, don’t wait – book your tickets to avoid missing out on this awesome island!

Even if you are taking the cargo ferry to Culebra, you won’t be able to take a rental car from mainland Puerto Rico over to the island with you. This is reserved for locals only. This means you’ll not only have to book your ferry, flight, or tour in advance, but you’ll also need to book a car, golf cart, or scooter in Culebra in advance too! They also sell out quickly, which could leave you dependent on walking, biking, or taxis – if you can find them.

Book hotels in advance.

While there will be tourists on Culebra every day of the week, the best way to beat the crowds are to visit on weekdays. This not only allows you better accessibility to tickets to Culebra, but you’ll also avoid the rush of locals who visit on the weekend!

The best way to do this is to book ahead online or head to Dewey’s waterfront in Culebra in search of a water taxi captain.

Is a day trip to Culebra worth it?

100% if you can go to Culebra for a day, you should. Take the ferry over if you’re in Ceiba, or do a day trip via plane !

At minimum you can visit Flamenco Beach, the best beach in Puerto Rico, but you can also rent transportation to get around the full island in just a day! If you have more time, you can also do an island kayak and snorkel adventure to see the local turtles.

Which is nicer, Vieques or Culebra?

Honestly, both islands have their charm, and if you have extra days in your Puerto Rico itinerary, I highly recommend you go to both of them!

Vieques is a bit busier offering more restaurant and accommodation options making it a great family destination. It’s also a must-visit for its famous bioluminescent bay . Meanwhile, Culebra is extremely laid back and offers one of the best beaches in the world at Flamenco Beach. It’s a tough decision!

How do I get from San Juan to Flamenco Beach?

As Flamenco Beach is one of the best Culebra beaches, you’ll first have to get from San Juan to Culebra Island. Then, from either the ferry terminal or airport in Culebra, you’ll have to find transportation to get to Flamenco Beach. This could be a taxi in Culebra, or you could rent a car, golf cart, or scooter.

While Flamenco Beach is technically walkable from the airport or Culebra ferry terminal, you don’t want to be spending 30 min to an hour walking each direction when you could be lounging on one of the best beaches in the world! Spend the few dollars to make the most of your time on Culebra, Puerto Rico!

Do I need to rent a car in Culebra?

My recommendation is to definitely rent your own transportation on Culebra. It will give you full flexibility to move about the island. That being said, you don’t have to go for a car. Golf carts, scooters, and bikes can be used to get around the island comfortably. I actually would recommend a golf cart simply because it’s easier to park places due to its small size!

How to get to Culebra from San Juan?

There are three main ways to get from Culebra from San Juan.

The most popular options is to take a ferry from Ceiba, which is an hour and a half drive east of San Juan.

The ferry ride is about 45 minutes and costs around $3-$5 depending on what items you’re bringing with you. Heavier items like coolers and beach chairs will cost extra.

Although the ferry has improved in the past years, it’s important to remember that the ferry schedule can be unreliable and often change unexpectedly.

Luckily, you can buy tickets online without having to do the line (or without the horror story of waiting in line just so that they sell out of tickets by the time it’s your turn. This has happened to me a lot).

If you’re looking for a more adventurous way to get to Culebra, rent a private boat or go on a guided boat tour.

This can be a great way to see the island from a unique perspective and explore some of the remote beaches and coves.

However, if you want to get to Culebra quicker, I recommend booking a plane where you’ll get to Culebra in under 30 minutes.

Each option has its own pros and cons, so be sure to weigh your options and choose the one that works best for your budget and travel style.

How to get to Culebra from Fajardo?

As of 2020, the ferry service from Fajardo to Culebra was suspended and moved to Ceiba.

This decision was made because it would be better in the long term for tourists and residents in Vieques and Culebra to come to Puerto Rico.

You can take a short 30-minute drive from Fajardo to Ceiba and take the ferry to Culebra.

You can also drive to Ceibas’ small airport and hop on a quick 20-minute plane ride to Culebra.

How to get to Culebra from Ceiba?

To travel to Culebra from Ceiba, you have two main transportation options: a ferry or a flight. 

The ferry takes approximately an hour to get to Culebra and can cost between $3-$5 per person each way. 

The ferry schedule can be unpredictable and subject to change, so it’s important to check the current schedule and plan accordingly. 

On the other hand, a flight from Ceiba’s airport to Culebra is relatively faster, taking only about 15 minutes.

You can book your tickets in advance with local airlines such as Cape Air and Vieques Air Link , among others.

However, the cost of a flight is higher than that of a ferry, so transportation is all based on your budget.

Can you fly to Culebra?

Yes, you can fly to Culebra from San Juan or Ceiba.

Cape Air and Vieques Air Link are the two airlines that operate flights to Culebra from both San Juan and Ceiba.

The flight from San Juan to Culebra takes around 25 minutes, while the flight from Ceiba to Culebra takes approximately 15 minutes.

However, it’s important to note that flights to Culebra are pricier than taking a ferry, and may not be as frequent as ferry services.

So, while flying to Culebra sounds like an easier option, it may not be the most practical or cost-effective one for everyone.

Where can you catch the ferry to Culebra?

There’s only one place for you to catch the ferry to Culebra, and that’s in Ceiba.

It’s highly recommended to buy tickets online before getting there to avoid last-minute changes like schedule changes or tickets are sold out. 

Additionally, the number of ferries running each day may be limited, so it’s a good idea to check the current schedule and plan ahead accordingly.

Culebra is very popular! Once you arrive in Culebra, you’ll understand why there are always lines and big crowds to get there.

Also, I can’t stress this enough: If you’re easily seasick, please take Dramamine with you!

Depending on the weather and water conditions, the boat ride can get pretty jumpy and if you’re sitting inside the ferry, it can feel like hell.

If you easily get seasick or not, I highly recommend sitting outside on the roof of the ferry to feel less impact and enjoy the beautiful view while on your way to Culebra.

How long is the boat ride from Puerto Rico to Culebra? 

If you are traveling by boat from Puerto Rico to Culebra, the boat ride’s duration will depend on the mode of transportation you choose.

The ferry ride from Ceiba to Culebra takes approximately one hour, while private water taxis can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the water conditions and the type of boat.

If this is your first time traveling to Culebra, there are a couple of tips I want to share with you I wish I had when I was first traveling to Culebra.

These tips will help you make your traveling experience there a lot smoother, easier, and without any inconvenience 

Here are 8 Do’s and Don’ts of traveling to Culebra:

1. DO pack lightly

While you may be tempted to pack everything you need for your trip, keep in mind that Culebra is a small island with limited transportation options.

Pack only what you need, and try to bring items that can serve multiple purposes.

2. DON’T forget sunscreen

The sun can be very strong in Culebra, so be sure to bring plenty of sunscreens and apply it regularly throughout the day.

It’s also a good idea to wear a hat and protective clothing to avoid sunburn.

3. DO explore the island’s beaches

Culebra is known for its beautiful beaches, so be sure to take some time to explore them. 

Flamenco Beach is one of the most popular and picturesque beaches on the island, but there are many other beautiful beaches to discover as well.

4. DON’T litter

Culebra’s natural beauty is a big part of what makes it such a special place, so it’s important to do your part to keep it clean.

Be sure to dispose of trash properly and follow the island’s rules and regulations.

5. DO try the local cuisine

Culebra has a rich culinary tradition that’s well worth exploring.

Be sure to try some of the local dishes, such as conch fritters, mofongo, and arroz con gandules, at one of the island’s many restaurants and food stands.

6. DON’T forget medication

When planning your trip to Culebra, don’t forget about the Dramamine!

The waters between the two islands can be choppy, particularly during bad weather or high winds, and the ferry can be subject to sudden movements and jolts. 

For some travelers, this can lead to seasickness, which can be a major discomfort and even ruin the entire trip. 

7. DO arrive on time and earlier if possible

It’s important to arrive on time or even earlier if possible to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. The earlier you get to the terminal, the better!

The ferry schedule can be unpredictable, and delays are not uncommon, so it’s a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to check in and board the ferry.

Additionally, the ferry can get quite crowded during peak travel times, especially during weekends and holidays, so arriving early can help ensure that you get a seat and have enough room to move around comfortably during the journey.

It’s best to arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure time.

If you purchased your tickets online, then you don’t have to wait in line at the ticket booth. 

If you did not purchase your tickets online, arrive at least 3 hours before to secure your ticket. 

You can look at the schedules through the Puerto Rico Ferry website and under “See route and schedules,” pick the current dates.

8. DON’T leave things for the last minute

Don’t be like me and leave things for the last minute. The more prepared you are, the better your trip to Culebra will be.

Avoid buying ferry tickets to Culebra last minute. Culebra is a very popular island, and the ferries are almost always sold out. 

If possible, buy tickets 3-4 days before your trip to Culebra to assure availability.

It’s best to have your bag ready to go the night before you plan on going to Culebra. If you’re wasting time preparing your bag before leaving, theres a 95% chance you are going to miss your ferry.

If you’re not renting a car, ensure you have transportation ready to pick you up and take you to Ceiba.

If you're taking a plane from San Juan to Culebra, you can expect to spend $120 per person for a 20-minute ride to Culebra. If the budget is tight, then you'll have to spend $15-$20 for gas to get to Ceiba and around $5 per person for the ferry ride to Culebra.

Can you take your car to Culebra?

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take your car to Culebra unless you're a Culebra resident. Before the pandemic, you were able to take the cargo ship at 5 am with your car and get to Culebra so you could easily drive around without depending on taxis.

Getting In & Out

Culebra is officially part of Puerto Rico, and therefore, part of the US. You will most likely be arriving from the island of Puerto Rico. US citizens only need a driver’s license/state ID card and foreigners will, of course, need to enter using a passport.

You can arrive to Culebra by flight or by ferry. Due to the frequent breakdowns of ferries that leave people stranded and the difficulty in purchasing tickets, I strongly recommend spending the money to take the flight to avoid the upset and headaches.

The ferry takes about 60-90 minutes (depending on the ship) to travel between Puerto Rico and Culebra. This is the cheapest option, but the ferry comes with a few caveats.

Ferries used to depart from Fajardo, but since 2018 have been departing from Ceiba according to friends in Puerto Rico. Tickets can be purchased at the ferry terminal office in Ceiba for about $2.50 one way or $5 roundtrip (plus plan to pay 0.60¢ per day for parking), however, many times the ferry is completely sold out (also worth noting is that residents of Culebra and Puerto Rico have priority over tourists on tickets) and it’s quite common for some of the ferries to be broken down and not in service.

I would advise booking your tickets in advance via Puerto Rico Ferries  to (hopefully) avoid any headaches.  If you are combining a visit to Culebra with Vieques you can also take the ferry between Vieques and Culebra as well.

The sea can be notoriously rough between Puerto Rico and Culebra, so if you are prone to sea sickness I would try to avoid the ferry, or at least prepare yourself for the worst. I also do not recommend the ferry for those on tight schedules as you should expect hiccups getting to/from Culebra.

More expensive but more efficient and predictable. Air Flamenco &  Vieques Air  offer connections to Culebra from both Isla Grande Airport and Ceiba Airport.

Ceiba is the cheapest option as it is lies on Puerto Rico’s east coast. The flight lasts about 15-20 minutes and will set you back $99 roundtrip. Expect to pay a little more from Isla Grande.

Being part of the USA the currency is, of course, the US dollar.

There is one ATM on the Island at the Banco Popular in Dewey near where the ferries dock. Otherwise, just stock up on cash before leaving Puerto Rico. Cash is still the favored form of payment here, however, several grocers, shops, and restaurants around Dewey accept Visa and Mastercard.

Tipping at restaurants is expected just like anywhere else in the USA. 15% is the norm.

The lines can be a little blurred here. You can spend a lot and live a little more luxuriously or you can kick around on the backpacker budget, though not quite as dirt cheap as you’ll find in Southeast Asia or Central America.

Considering that this is the Caribbean and the natural beauty of some of the beaches Culebra really is a bargain for what you get. From tent camping to lovely villas, walk or cycle the island or rent a golf cart…. you have plenty of options here that will fit most any budget.

Accommodation

You have a plethora of options here considering just how small the island is.

Your cheapest bet will be camping on Flamenco Beach. Camp slots are $20 per night with up to 6 people allowed to stay at each site. There are restrooms available albeit online reports say they’re pretty dismal.

If you don’t have your own camping gear don’t sweat it, gear can be rented nearby. As well as there are a few food kiosks just in a little way from the beach (trust me, you can’t miss them). Want more info on camping in Culebra?  Check out Camping Culebra .

Where To Eat

There are several small shops and grocery stores around the island where food and alcohol can be purchased if you’re trying to save. Expect similar prices to what you pay in Puerto Rico.

There are also several restaurants and bars around the island, expect to find dishes priced between $3 on up to $25 or more. There are prices to fit most budgets around in Culebra.

Cheaper options can be found at Zaco’s Tacos, El Panino, and Tiki Grill. Personally, I think my favorite dish I sat down to in Culebra was at the Krusty Krab, the grouper there is perfect.

Transportation

From my experience on Culebra, I personally recommend renting a golf cart from either  Carlos Jeep Rental  or  Jerry’s Jeep Rental . A golf cart will run you about $45/day. You can’t beat having the wind whip through your hair, plus it’s a blast. Jerry’s also rents scooters for the same price per day.

Another, slightly cheaper option is bicycle rental. Start by calling 787-645-5355 (La Romana Apartments) where bicycles can be rented for $20/day or $120/week.

The most expensive option is renting a full-on jeep from either of the aforementioned rental companies. Expect to pay $70+/day.

Official public transit doesn’t really exist here. There are Publicos around the island operate as taxis, expect to pay $3-5 depending on the length of the journey.

What To See & Do On Culebra

Beaches, beaches, and more beaches. Of course, catching a nice sunset, snorkeling among some pretty pristine corals, and kicking back are going to be the most popular.

The roughly 30 square kilometer island is home to about 1,800 residents, with Dewey being the main town on the island. This is where your main concentration of shops, hotels, restaurants, bars, and the ferry terminal are located. It’s fairly small, so no need to worry about getting yourself too lost here. For those traveling in by air, the airport is located just slightly north from Dewey.

Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach is regularly ranked as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. A long strip of sugary white sand with turquoise crystal clear waters lapping at its shores.

A main draw is checking out the tank further down the beach. It’s been covered in colorful graffiti and is a must-see if you end up out here.

The US navy used to use Culebra as a bombing and gunnery practice site and were eventually chased out, and this a remnant. There is also another tank hidden back in the trees off the beach as well.

A nice, normally fairly quiet beach on the eastern side of the island. On a clear day, you can see clear over to  St. Thomas . But don’t worry if you don’t have perfectly clear skies, you’ll still be able to take in views of nearby Cayo Norte and Isla Culebrita.

Isla Culebrita

Isla Culebrita can be reached by renting a private boat (will run you about $150-200 for the day). If you think the beaches back in Culebra are quiet, these are barely touched. You may have it to yourself.

Playa Tamarindo & Playa Melones

Both on the west coast, nearly right next to each other and usually pretty calm. Perfectly situated for a great sunset. Bring your bug spray, the sand fleas come out in full force at dusk.

Parallel park your golf cart on one of the roads and walk around Culebra’s compact little town. A number of shops, restaurants, and bars are all located along the main streets here.

Snorkeling/Diving

Stroll into a dive shop in Dewey and you can easily set up a trip, or if you have your own snorkel gear you can venture out from your chosen beach. Don’t worry if you’re a meticulous planner- you can book snorkeling trips in advance  here . There are plenty of good places to snorkel- check out that map earlier in the post for dive sites.

Culebra is super safe, even at night. Head down to any of the beaches and listen to the waves crash ashore and gaze up at the night sky. Flamenco is a great option for a nighttime visit as it’s far enough away from Dewey that there’s not tons of light pollution. You’ll probably even run into some families out camping and some fisherman.

Short on time?

If you only have a day to spare on your trip to Puerto Rico and want to see Culebra, a great option for you is to take a catamaran day trip from Fajardo. These types of tours will set you back about $120 For a visit to Flamenco as well as other beaches on the island, snorkeling, and lunch.

Culebra is generally a pretty safe place. Just use the usual precautions and you can avoid most unfavorable situations.

Health Concerns

Mosquitos and roosters are about the only two nuisances around the island. Mosquitos can carry Dengue out on Culebra, so make sure to bring bug spray. Zika is present in Puerto Rico in general as well.

Roosters mostly will wake you crowing at the morning sun, but sometimes they can be a little aggressive and steal food right off your plate at a restaurant (I witnessed it).

Internet & Phone

Most US carriers will work and coverage falls under your US plan. Wifi is available at most hotels.

Other Important Information

• English and Spanish are spoken throughout Culebra.

Hi Jeff, Mobile coverage on the island is generally good, though outside of Dewey you can expect some spots where mobile internet isn’t as strong (in Dewey I always had at least LTE). In Dewey most all accommodations have wifi available too.

Hello, My family and I were planning to visit Culebra in April of 2022 but its my understanding that they are have been having serious seaweed problems that the government is not addressing. How to Get to Culebra & Vieques from Puerto Rico’s Main Island

Are you planning to stay on the main island during your visit to Puerto Rico? Or are you visiting the popular islands of Culebra and Vieques?

If you ask us, it’s a no-brainer. Commonly known as the Spanish Virgin Islands, Culebra and Vieques are home to some of the most beautiful beaches, world-class snorkeling and diving spots, and one of Puerto Rico’s world-renowned bioluminescent bays. These are just a few of the reasons why you can’t skip a visit to these sparkling gems of the Isle of Enchantment.

You might already be overwhelmed with planning your flight and accommodations for your Puerto Rico trip, but luckily it’s easy to add in a stop to one of these islands. Read on to learn how to get from San Juan to Culebra or Vieques and score some tips on planning your visit.

Culebra is one of the most popular islands in the Puerto Rico archipelago thanks to its stunning white sand beaches, coral reef, and marine life such as turtles. Travelers often take a day or weekend trip to Culebra to enjoy its unparalleled snorkel and dive sites, like the barrier reefs off Playa Carlos Rosario and Playa Tamarindo. Other popular attractions include Flamenco Beach (one of the most beautiful in the world), Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve, and Culebra National Wildlife Refuge.

Just 6 miles from the main island, Vieques is known for its many beautiful beaches, wildlife refuge, and bio bay. Take the Ferry from Ceiba

The most affordable way to get to Vieques or Culebra is by taking the ferry from Ceiba, but it’s not necessarily the easiest. Ferry tickets only cost about $2 – $3 per passenger each way, so it’s definitely accessible for those traveling on a budget. However, you need to find transportation from San Juan (or wherever you’re staying) to Ceiba, which is about an hour and a half from the city.

If you have a car rental, getting there is easy, but note that you’ll have to park your rental at the ferry terminal and coordinate separate transportation to get around Culebra or Vieques. If you choose a taxi or other form of transportation to get to the ferry terminal, it can get a little pricey.

Something to keep in mind is that residents of the island are given priority over tourists to buy tickets, so you should be sure to secure them in advance (more on this in the tips below). Even with a pre-booked ferry ride, potential delays or cancellations due to weather or other factors could derail your plans.

The ferry runs daily from 4 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and if you’d like to visit both islands, you can ferry between them as well. You can review itineraries, rates, and book your tickets at Porferry .

Fly from San Juan, Fajardo, or Ceiba

Getting to the islands by plane is quicker and more reliable than the ferry, but of course, it comes at a higher cost. Local airlines like Vieques Air Link offer direct flights to Culebra and Vieques from various regional airports, with prices typically around $90. You can fly to the islands from San Juan, Fajardo, or Ceiba (the flight from Ceiba is the shortest at about 15 – 20 minutes).

Another option is to book through a major airline while purchasing your flight to Puerto Rico. You can usually get a combined fare, and you can easily make your connection flight. Just note that you have to leave the international San Juan Airport and board your flight at the Isla Grande Airport, which is just a few minutes away.

If you’re looking for a luxury experience, you can opt for a charter flight from Taxi Aereo, with prices starting at almost $900 for four passengers.

Take a Boat Charter or Tour from Fajardo

The most stress-free way to make your way to Culebra or Vieques and enjoy everything these islands have to offer is on an all-inclusive boat tour or charter. Often departing from Fajardo, these tours make your experience easy. All you have to do is board the boat and let the captain take it from there!

In addition to transportation, these full-day tours often include lunch, drinks, and snacks, so you don’t have to figure out your meals while you’re visiting the islands. If you’re looking to do some snorkeling, snuba or scuba diving, or beach hopping, you’re covered with all the equipment and expert guidance you need to have a great day in the water.

When traveling with the whole family or a large group, a boat tour can be the easiest option. Forget about figuring out transportation, dealing with delays at the ferry terminal, or pricey plane tickets — the cost of getting to the island is often included in the price of your tour. Tips for a Smooth Trip

No matter which option you choose to get to one of the islands, there are a few mistakes you want to avoid to make your trip as headache-free as possible. Follow these tips for an easy, fun experience.

• Book a tour in advance. If you really want to make the most of your time on Culebra or Vieques, you’re better off exploring with an experienced tour guide. Make sure to book your tour well in advance — they tend to fill up fast, especially during the busy season.
• If you choose to take the ferry, be sure to purchase your ticket in advance as well. With such low prices, they sell out quickly. And remember, residents get priority access to purchase tickets. You can either purchase them online or go to the terminal a few days before your planned trip and buy them there. If you have no choice but to buy them on the same day, make your way to the terminal as early in the morning as possible.
• If you choose to rent a car during your vacation, you should also book this ahead of time. If taking the ferry, remember you can’t take your rental car with you — you’ll have to book another one to use on Culebra or Vieques. Don’t get stranded without a car! Planning ahead will guarantee the smoothest trip.
• If possible, try to visit the islands on a weekday for a more peaceful, uncrowded trip. As you can imagine, the islands can get quite busy on the weekends. You can find tourists there any day of the week, but weekdays tend to be more calm.
• Prepare for motion sickness if taking the ferry or a boat tour. Be sure to pack any medication you plan to take for motion sickness and take it at the prescribed time.

How To Get From Vieques to Culebra (Ferry, Flight, or Day Trip?)

The best way to get from Vieques to Culebra in Puerto Rico is by ferry, but you can also fly between the islands. Here’s what to expect!

Trying to find the Best Way from Vieques to Culebra?

Sarah and I recently took a trip to Puerto Rico. Despite Sarah growing up in Florida, neither of us ever had the chance to visit this Caribbean island, so we were really excited to spend a little over a week exploring the U.S. Territory!

While researching what to do on this island, we decided we wanted to visit both Vieques and Culebra, two smaller islands off the west coast of Puerto Rico. They looked absolutely stunning, but we couldn’t figure out how to get from one to the other.

Is there a ferry from Vieques to Culebra? Can you fly from Vieques to Culebra?

We ended up taking independent day trips to each island from Fajardo, but we did learn everything we could about interisland travel in Puerto Rico along the way, so here’s everything you should know about how to get from Vieques to Culebra!

Ferry from Vieques to Culebra

Unfortunately, there are no direct ferries or flights from Vieques to Culebra. Unless you are willing to charter your own plane (which is possible), the only way between Vieques and Culebra is through the main island.

The most popular way to get from Vieques to Culebra is by taking independent ferries.

There are no direct ferries from Vieques to Culebra, but you can easily take a ferry from Vieques to Ceiba, and then another ferry from Ceiba to Culebra , and the entire journey should only take a couple of hours!

How much do Ferry Tickets Cost?

Tickets on the ferries in Puerto Rico are exceptionally cheap. One-way tickets between Vieques and Ceiba are $2.00, and one-way tickets between Ceiba and Culebra are $2.25.

Therefore, roundtrip tickets from Vieques to Culebra will cost $8.50 per person.

How Long is the Ferry to Culebra?

According to the booking portal, the ferry to Culebra from Ceiba is 60 minutes. But for us, this was only true on the way to Culebra. On the way back, it took nearly 2 hours! We think this had something to do with the currents and choppy waters.

The trip to Culebra was also a passenger-only ferry, while the way back to Ceiba was a Pax+Cargo ferry. So, it’s possible that the type of ferry also had an impact on the trip duration.

The ferry from Vieques to Ceiba is a bit longer (around 90 minutes minimum), and the same rules apply, so take the passenger ferry for the quickest transfer.

Altogether, if you’re trying to take the ferry from Vieques to Culebra, the entire journey will take 3-4 hours, depending on how long of a ‘layover’ you have in Ceiba.

Puerto Rico Ferry Tips

• Book a Passenger Ferry – They are typically faster than Cargo Ferries (Pax + Cargo)
• Take Motion Sickness Pills – At least for us, the crossing was not smooth sailing, and we both got seasick right away. Even if you rarely get seasick, you should take something to prevent motion sickness before you depart.
• Reserve Tickets Ahead of Time – It’s common for ferry tickets to sell out, especially in the summer. But there are more tickets available in person than online. So, if you see that tickets are sold out online, contact your hotel in Fajardo/Vieques. Our Airbnb hosts were kind enough to go to the ferry terminal a few days before we arrived and get ferry tickets for us! – Tickets go on sale 2-3 months in advance.
• Refund Policy – You cannot get a refund for ferry tickets in Puerto Rico, but you can exchange them for a different day twice, free of charge!
• You cannot bring your rental car onto the ferry. This is outlined in every rental agency agreement on the island. Only locals can bring cars they personally own.

Vieques to Culebra Flights

Cape Air (which is a partner of JetBlue) operates direct flights between San Juan and Vieques/Culebra, but it is VERY rare that they have a route directly between the islands.

Therefore, flying from Vieques to Culebra typically involves two separate 30-minute flights with a 2-3 hour layover at San Juan Airport.

The tickets will also cost $200-300 (one-way). It ends up being about the same amount of time as the ferry, but much more expensive.

If price is not an issue, then you might as well charter a flight straight to Culebra for about $500 per person.

Day Trip from Vieques to Culebra 

There used to be a direct day tour from Vieques to Culebra, but now you can only find tours departing from Fajardo.

However, if you catch the first ferry from Vieques to Ceiba, there are a couple of awesome tours to choose from that start in Fajardo!

1. Culebra Island Snorkeling Tour

The most cost-efficient tour (and the one that we took) is this Culebra Snorkeling Tour (ferry tickets included). You basically meet the guide at the ferry terminal, and they will give you the ferry tickets and also handle all transportation when you get to Culebra.

This was the perfect tour because we didn’t know what to expect from Culebra. It took a lot of the guesswork out of the day and allowed us just to enjoy.

The tour also provided all our gear and stopped at Flamenco Beach for a few hours at the end of the day!

2. Vieques to Culebra Full-Day Catamaran Tour

One of the more comfortable ways to take a day trip to Culebra is by booking a catamaran tour from the mainland.

Not only is this a quicker path to the island, but instead of going to the ferry port and then needing to take a van to the beaches, the catamaran will go straight to the most scenic spots, like Flamenco Beach and Tamarindo Beach.

Is there a ferry from Vieques to Culebra?

There is no direct ferry from Vieques to Culebra. Instead, you can take a ferry from Vieques to Ceiba (Fajardo) and another ferry from Ceiba to Culebra. The whole journey takes about 3 hours.

Can you take a water taxi from Culebra to Vieques?

You can occasionally find a water taxi that can take you directly from Culebra to Vieques. These day trips usually cost between $50-150 per person.

Is culebra nicer than vieques?

Culebra is nicer for snorkeling, diving, sailing, and other watersports. However, Vieques has nice beaches and more restaurants/guesthouses. It’s also better for a multi-day trip.

If you want to go snorkeling then you should visit the Carlos Rosario beach. This beach isn’t as nice as Flamenco beach but it does have an impressive coral reef that you can go and explore. The coral reef is close enough to the shore for snorkeling and it offers an abundance of beautiful sea creatures to view.

Watch Turtles

If you are visiting Culebra during April or June then you might just be in luck to see Leatherback and Hawkbill turtles visit the island. You can even become part of the island’s volunteer program by contacting the Department of Natural Resources. Volunteers assist in protecting these beautiful animals and also get a close peek at hatchlings.

Where is Culebra Puerto Rico?

You’ve read about the beaches and Culebra’s amazing snorkeling, but where is Culebra exactly?

Culebra is a small island located 17 miles (27 km) east of the mainland of Puerto Rico. Home to crystal clear waters, white sand beaches and loads of marine life (like sea turtles), Culebra, Puerto Rico is a beach goer’s dream!

Getting To Culebra

Since Culebra is an island, driving to Culebra is not possible . Wah, wah, wah. So, how do you get to Culebra then?

Well, there are three ways you can get to Culebra island. The first transportation option is to book a day trip , the second is to take the ferry, and the third is to fly.

Culebra Day Trip (Getting There Option 1)

If you don’t have the time to do an overnight or several day trip to Culebra island or just like the idea of someone planning your trip for you, then a day trip is perfect for you!

From catamaran rides to snorkeling excursions and kayaking adventures there are a handful of amazing day trips from mainland Puerto Rico.

There are lots of different types of day trips that you can book for a quick trip to Culebra. Here is a quick look at some of the top day trips to consider if you prefer to travel with a group or if you prefer to leave all the planning in the hands of someone else.

Culebra Day Trip by Catamaran from Fajardo

If you love the water, then you’ll love this day trip by high-speed catamaran watercraft to Culebra. Not only do you get to enjoy a tropical island paradise – exploring the pristine coral reefs and relaxing on white-sand beaches in the sun – but you’ll also get an included buffet lunch. The complimentary refreshments include rum punch and piña coladas! All told, it’s about a 5.5-hour trip.

Ferry Day Trip Culebra Island from San Juan

Get ready for a full day beach hopping tour ! This day trip to Flamenco Beach and Tamarindo Beach and is one-of-a-kind. You’ll take a ferry from San Juan to Flamenco beach for roughly three hours, enjoying the water, sand, and cocktails. Then, you’ll head to Tamarindo Beach for snorkel in crystal-clear water among vibrant marine wildlife like sea turtles. Snorkeling gear is included. You can expect the day trip to last about 11 hours.

Culebra Island Flight Day Trip From San Juan

This type of day trip includes a quick 25-minute flight from San Juan to Culebra with amazing aerial views. The trip features a scenic air trip around the island, ground transportation, beach hopping between Flamenco Beach and Tamarindo Beach, snorkeling excursions, and more!

This flight day trip is best for anyone who wants more time to enjoy Culebra, without spending so much time traveling by boat. With a total duration of around 9 hours, this tour is packed with adventure, including multiple beaches and several activities in a single day. It’s one of the best and easiest ways to get to Culebra if you are pressed for time.

Ferry To Culebra (Getting There Option 2)

The second transportation option, which also happens to be the cheapest way to get to Culebra, is taking the high-speed ferry from Ceiba.

Taking the ferry isn’t the quickest way to reach the island, but it certainly is one of the most fun and scenic routes to enjoy if you want to get the most experience out of your holiday.

Many people feel that taking the ferry is a very important part of the Culebra experience.

These trips are ideal for those who might be spending several days on the island. Everything from the ferry to the camping or beach hotels offer a magical experience and you will have plenty of time to explore all the beaches, enjoy various activities such as snorkeling or 4×4 drives or simply take a nap on the beach.

NOTE: The ferry from Puerto Rico to Culebra USED to be located in Fajardo. Ferry service to Culebra no longer operates out of Fajardo. It now operates out of Ceiba.

San Juan to Ceiba Ferry Terminal

Are you staying in Old San Juan and wondering, “How do I get from San Juan to Ceiba ferry?” Well, it’s simple. You’ll need to take an Uber or Taxi to get from Old San Juan to the Ceiba Ferry Terminal.

The ride from San Juan to Ceiba is about an hour (33 m / 53 km) and for an Uber, we paid about $75 (one way, not including tip).

Culebra Ferry Tickets

There is no guarantee you’ll be able to purchase a ferry ticket once you arrive at the ferry terminal in Ceiba, so it’s best to book your ferry ticket ahead of time.

You can buy tickets in advance at PORFERRY . You’ll have your tickets emailed to you and that is what you’ll show to the ferry terminal worker as you are in line to board ferry to Culebra.

NOTE: The PORFERRY site is in Spanish. If Spanish is a foreign language to you, make sure you have your “Google Translate” on and with a simple click, the site turns to English.

We recommend not buying your ticket in person on the day of your departure, but if you’d like to, the ticket window opens 1 hour before each scheduled departure.

How Much is The Ferry to Culebra?

The ferry to Culebra is a really affordable way to visit one of Puerto Rico’s most popular island. Below are tickets prices that will help you plan your trip to your Puerto Rican island getaway.

When you buy tickets, you should keep in mind that prices may vary based on the season. Ferry rates might be a bit higher in peek seasons.

How Long Is The Ferry Ride to Culebra

The ferry ride to Culebra itself is a 45 minutes ride , but for planning purposes, 3 hours is more accurate for the one-way trip as a whole.

3 hours, you say?!? Well yes, let us explain…

If you add up the total time it takes you to get to Culebra, you’re looking at about 2 hours and 45 minutes .

• 1 hour: The ride from San Juan to Ceiba
• 1 hour: The suggested arrival time at the ferry terminal before your scheduled departure
• 45 minutes: The ferry ride

See, about three hours 🙂

The 45 minute ferry ride flies by and it’s a very comfortable – cushioned seats, AC, outdoor as well as indoor seating.

The ferry ride is a perfect opportunity to search some places to stay or to book a rental car if you change your mind about your previous holiday plans.

Ceiba to Culebra Ferry Schedule

There are several daily ferry departures that operate weekly. For more details, check out the ferry schedule below.

For the most up-to-date ferry schedule, please visit PORFERRY

For planning purposes, if you take the 9:00am ferry, you’ll need to leave San Juan at 6:45am/7am for you to arrive at the ferry terminal by 8am for your 9am departure. Remember, it’s recommended to arrive an hour before your scheduled departure.

If you take the 9am ferry, you can plan to have your feet on Culebra soil by 9:45am and your toes in the sand around 11:00am 🙂

Culebra Puerto Rico Ferry Planning Tips

Book in advance.

Play the better safe than sorry route and do yourself a favor and book your ferry ticket to Culebra in advance. We’d hate for you to travel 1-hour from San Juan only to find that tickets have sold out.

Get To The Ferry Terminal An Hour Early

Plan to arrive at the Ceiba Ferry Terminal an hour before your scheduled departure. An hour will give you plenty of time to get the lay of the land, grab a snack and line up to ensure you get a seat on the ferry.

Pay Attention Where You Line Up

As you line up to catch the ferry, pay attention. The left side of the queue is for passengers going to Culebra where as the right side of the queue is for passengers going to Vieques.

Thirsty and Hungry?

There is small cafe located within the Ceiba Ferry Terminal – The Surf Shack.

The Surf Shack offers coffee, muffins, chips, and hot sandwiches for those needing some food before jumping on the 45-minute ferry ride.

There is also wifi and outlets in the cafe for those who need it.

Parking At The Ceiba Ferry Terminal

If you have a rental car, there is a public parking located next to the ferry terminal where you can leave your car for about $5 per day.  

Luggage Fees

Each passenger visiting Culebra can board with a small piece of luggage for no additional fees . 

If you’re carrying on items like coolers, umbrellas, surf boards, etc. you’ll need to pay additional fees . Depending on what exactly you’re carrying on, the prices vary from an additional $1 to $6 USD one way.

Flights to Culebra (Getting There Option 3)

The third and final option on how to get to Culebra happens to be one of our favorites – the San Juan to Culebra flight. Flying to Culebra from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is as easy and 1-2-3.

FFlying to Culebra is ideal if you do not have too much time to explore the island or if you prefer a quicker trip. The ferry to Culebra takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes where a plain trip could take as little as just 25 minutes. Flying to Culebra is also ideal if you are afraid of getting seasick on the ferry ride. Just make sure to take a few nausea tablets if you are prone to motion sickness since even a quick plane ride can make you feel a bit sick. .

Culebra Airport Airlines

Culebra’s Airport is known as Aeropuerto Benjamín Rivera Noriega. It’s a small airport that operates several daily flights to and from the mainland of Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands.

There are a few airlines that fly from San Juan to Culebra – Silver Airways and Cape Air . Other airlines like Air Flamenco and Vieques Air Link fly to and from Culebra but to Cieba instead of Old San Juan.

It is always a good idea to get a quote from different airlines before your flight so you can determine which ones offer the best rates. Booking in advance can also save you a lot of money, especially if you are booking during peak season.

San Juan to Culebra Flight Cost & Flight Time

The flight time is about a 30 to 35 minute flight costing anywhere from $89 – $135 for a one-way ticket.

For reference, from take off to touch down, our flight took about 28 minutes.

About The Flight To Culebra

The flight into Culebra can be a bit bumpy but the scenery more than makes up for the bumpy ride!

The airline we flew with was Cape Air and allow us to paint a little picture for you. We left Flamenco Beach an hour before our flight and with sand still on our toes and salt water in our hair, we took off for San Juan.

No stress, easy-peasy.

Before we knew it, we were in San Juan and back in our hotel showering up for dinner that night .

So, What’s The Best Way To Get to Culebra?

Really, it’s up to you! Personal preference as they say. But if you’re asking us (the people who took the high speed ferry and flight), we’d have to say flying was the better choice.

When comparing ticket prices, the ferry is by far the cheapest option – which is why we booked it.

However, our first mistake was not even entertaining the idea of flying to Culebra. When you add in the drive time, the cost to get from San Juan to Ceiba and then taking the high-speed ferry, flying to Culebra isn’t that absurd of an option.

After looking into the flight more, we forwent our return ferry ticket to Ceiba and booked a one-way ticket flight from Culebra to San Juan. For us, it was totally worth it and a great experience!

If your goal is to spend as much time on the island as possible, we say fly. If you have the time to spare and are in no hurry, the high-speed ferry is for you.

Culebra Hotels & Accommodations

• The Luxury Inclined:    The Seabourne Hotel offers private balconies and bay views, making this hotel perfect for relaxing. With an easy to access dock and signature rum cocktails, a few days at Seabourne will have you feeling right.
• The Budget Conscious:   Hotel Kokomo is located in the center of town close to the ferry terminal, restaurants and bars. Offering private rooms with AC, Kokomo is a great place to call home for a few days.
• Something in Between:   Mamacitas Guest House is situated along a water way. With an onsite restaurant and bar, Mamacita’s is a great location on Culebra.

Hi Renee! You’ll have to rent a car, golf cart or bike. Walking is personal preference as it’s a bit far about an hour walk (4.5kms / 2.75 mile). Carlos Jeep Rentals and Jerry’s Jeep Rentals is where you can rent golf carts or jeeps. It’s a short walk from the ferry terminal or you can contact them and arrange a pick up.

17 Best Things to Do in Culebra Puerto Rico [2024]

LOOKING FOR THINGS TO DO IN CULEBRA PUERTO RICO?

You’ve come to the right place! We enjoyed a wonderful trip to Puerto Rico and were so glad we had the chance to explore Culebra Island. Located just off the east coast of Puerto Rico, Culebra Island is full of some of the world’s most stunning beaches with a laid-back atmosphere. 

Visiting Culebra was one of our favorite parts of our trip to Puerto Rico. On our next trip, we are planning on camping at Flamenco Beach, so we have a little more time to enjoy the beautiful island, delicious food, and enjoyable atmosphere. 

Until then, we’re happy to share with you some of our favorite things to do in Culebra, Puerto Rico, as well as some tips to help make your adventure top-notch! Taking some time to explore Culebra will be well worth your time, we promise! 

Things to Do in Culebra Puerto Rico 

Culebra Island is best known for its unspoiled beaches and while you should plan on spending lots of time at the beach, there are other fun things to do and places to explore on the island of Culebra. It is a quiet island with lots of activities to enjoy in nature.

1. Flamenco Beach 

The easiest and most famous place to recommend is Flamenco Beach . It is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful top beaches in the world, and within a few footsteps on the beach, you will see why. One of the island’s main attractions it’s a horseshoe-shaped beach surrounded by green rolling hills and beautiful blue water.

Because of the limited access to Culebra, Puerto Rico, the beach was not very busy while we were there. The waves were the perfect size to let Rowen and Raven swim in the turquoise water. Snorkeling is also a popular activity on the beach. A visit to this beach is definitely one of the best things to do in Culebra Island, Puerto Rico with kids. 

There are bathrooms at the beach and some small changing rooms. Toilet paper was not always stocked in the bathroom, so it would be a good idea to bring some of your own. We love taking these compact travel toilet paper rolls .

Just outside the beach gates, there is usually a truck renting chairs, umbrellas, and snorkel gear. There is also a small food court with picnic benches just inside the beach gates.

In addition to playing on the beach, be sure to check out the military tanks. They are found on the west end of the beach and in the brush behind the beach.

2. Luis Peña Nature Reserve – Tamarindo & Carlos Rosario Beaches

Luis Peña Nature Reserve is a nature reserve that protects the coral reefs, seagrass beds, and the mangrove forest in the area. The reserve includes both Tamarindo and Carlos Rosario beaches and is a popular place for scuba diving. 

Tamarindo Beach 

The main highlight of Tamarindo Beach is snorkeling. There are parts of white sand beaches here, but it is mixed with pebbles and pieces of coral, making it not quite as soft and nice as Playa Flamenco.

The beach is about a mile long and has beautiful ocean views. The water is pretty shallow for about five feet out but then drops off.

The water is very calm, which makes it a great place for kayaking. This is the most popular place to see sea turtles in Culebra. It is a safe haven for the turtles, so remember to keep your distance! Manta rays and other species of fish are often spotted here too.

The coral reefs are beautiful and a sight to see for sure! Kayaking and looking for wildlife through Luis Peña Marine Reserve is one of the most fun things to do in Culebra, Puerto Rico. 

Keep in mind there are no rentals and facilities at Tamarindo Beach. You will need to bring your own food and snorkel gear. There are lots of parking spots available.

Carlos Rosario Beach 

Carlos Rosario Beach is often considered the best place to go snorkeling in Puerto Rico. It’s usually pretty quiet and makes for a peaceful beach experience. That said, be prepared for some rocks and other ocean debris on the beach. It’s not our favorite beach, but the exceptional snorkeling makes up for it. 

There is a beautiful reef that circles the entire cove. There is usually good snorkeling out by the boat buoys on the left. Be on the lookout for the sign showing the snorkeling areas. Expect to see lots of live corals and Caribbean marine life. If you’re lucky, you might see a turtle or stingray.  

If you’re up for a trek, you can walk from Flamenco Beach to Carlos Rosario Beach. The route is about a mile up a hill and then back down to get to the beach. If you’d rather travel by water, you can kayak there or catch a ride on a water taxi. 

3. Zoni Beach 

Zoni Beach is located on the eastern side of the island and is considered the second most popular beach on Culebra Island. It is a beautiful beach with amazing shades of blue. If you’re looking to avoid potential crowds at the famous Flamenco Beach, this is a great option.

The best time to visit the beach is at low tide. The water is calmest from spring until early fall. There are no facilities here, so make sure to bring your own food, sunscreen, and snorkeling equipment. There are some rocky parts at the beach and in the water, so make sure to bring some good shoes.

4. Explore Culebra National Wildlife Refuge 

The Culebra National Wildlife Refuge is about 1,480 acres and 23 islands! The refuge makes up more than 20% of the island of Culebra. If you decide to visit the refuge you can anticipate some amazing hiking, birdwatching, and quiet beaches. This is one of the best places to go in Culebra!

The refuge is also an important habitat for the endangered sea turtles as well as a variety of different seabirds. It is home to more than 50,000 birds, and your family will love spotting new ones throughout your adventure in the refuge! 

5. Visit Culebrita Island

Culebrita Island is one of the smaller islands off the coast of Culebra and is home to Playa Tortuga. It is a small, uninhabited island with no public transportation going to it. To get there, you will either need to charter a boat or join a local tour.

The boat ride over is about 25 minutes, and you may just have the place to yourself. This is one of our favorite Culebra activities!

The beach on Isla Culebrita is similar to Flamenco Beach but much more secluded. You can spend the day snorkeling, lying on the beach, and exploring the island. A unique point of interest on the island is the ruins of the old Culebrita lighthouse.

The tour also includes the use of snorkeling equipment, beach chairs, and umbrellas. This tour does leave from Culebra so you will need to make sure you have plans to already be on the island by the time the tour leaves.

6. Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding  

Kayaking and paddleboarding can be some of the most serene or playful ways to enjoy time on the water in Culebra. The calm waters of Tamarindo Beach make it an amazing place for both activities.

Remember, there are no rentals available at Playa Tamarindo, but there are some available at different locations around the island. 

7. Go Snorkeling 

The island of Culebra has some of the best snorkeling in Puerto Rico. One of the best places to go snorkeling here is Flamenco Beach. You can easily get to the first reef from the shore. There are usually quite a few people snorkeling on days with calm waters.

Another popular place to snorkel at Flamenco Beach is Shark Cages. You can find the reef here on the right of the beach, where the rocks start. If you don’t have your own snorkel gear, you can rent it at Flamenco Beach.

If you want to snorkel a little off the beaten path on Culebra, Tamarindo Beach is also a great place to visit. There are calm waters here and a wide range of sea life. It is very common to see turtles and stingrays there, as well as a bunch of different kinds of Caribbean fish.

The beach at Carlos Rosario is a secluded yet beautiful place to snorkel on Culebra Island. It is part of the Culebra Nature Reserve, which helps protect underwater life. There is a trail from the parking area that goes down to the beach. 

Melones Beach is another excellent location for snorkeling if the other Culebra beaches don’t fit what you’re looking for.

8. Go Boating 

One of the best ways to experience Culebra is on a boat. Many catamaran and other tours like All Day Beach & Fun Experience by Catamaran are ready to whisk your family around the beautiful island.

This type of experience allows you to capture some of the island’s best highlights while some also offer additional fun, like snorkeling, paddleboarding, or kayaking, too!

9. Go Hiking 

Though Culebra is known for some of the best beaches, so much beauty and splendor can be enjoyed on the land as well. For those not looking for anything too strenuous, there’s a simple loop around Flamenco Lagoon that offers excellent views of the area. 

As we mentioned before, the hike from Flamenco Beach to Carlos Rosario Beach is the best way to break a bit of a sweat before enjoying the joys of the beach. And don’t forget, some of the most lush and rewarding hiking on the island can be explored at Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. 

10. Go Fishing

Even anglers will be happy in Culebra! Fishing charters are popular here, so if you’re interested in sinking a line during your vacation there definitely are resources to do so.

The island’s shallow bays have made it a popular destination for fly fishing, especially during the winter months. Bonefish can be challenging to snag, but you might be lucky! 

Deep sea fishing for barracuda, tuna, and sailfish is one of the great things to do in Puerto Rico Culebra. Even spearfishing is okay in Culebra, so that makes for an adventure in and of itself! Best of all, fishing licenses are not required, so check that one off your list! 

11. Explore the Island on a Bike  

If you’re looking to get around the island in a fun and healthy way, consider renting bikes during your visit. Biking is one of the most fun things to do in Isla Culebra, Puerto Rico, because it’s such a free and easy way to make your way from place to place and allows you to enjoy the weather and landscape up close. 

There are a few places you can rent bicycles from on the island at a reasonable rate. 

12. Visit the Culebra Museum of History 

If you’re interested in learning more about the history, culture, and ecology of Culebra, a visit to the Museo Historico de Culebra (Culebra Museum of History) is well worth your time. The small museum has exhibits that focus on the island’s unique history, covering the indigenous Taino residents and the military occupation.

It is a free museum, but donations are always welcome.

13. Take a Tour 

Joining a tour is a great way to visit Culebra. You get the benefit of letting someone else do the planning, and you get to sit back and relax. Plus, I also love all of the knowledge and experience guides share during the tours. We always learn so many cool and interesting facts.

If you are interested in joining a tour, there are tours leaving from San Juan or Fajardo on the main island of Puerto Rico, or you could meet up with a tour group when you are already on the island of Culebra.

This tour includes pickup and drop-off in the San Juan area of mainland Puerto Rico, which is very convenient if you don’t have a rental car. After pickup, you will take a private boat over to Culebra.

Culebra Tour Leaving from Fajardo

If you have your own transportation or are going to be on the east side of the main island, you can book a tour leaving from Fajardo. Fajardo is about an hour east of San Juan.

This tour focuses on the great snorkeling spots around Culebra. You will get to visit two different spots on Culebra.

Things to Do in Culebra Puerto Rico at Night 

Culebra, Puerto Rico, is a small town, so there’s much of a nightlife scene aside from a few bars that stay open a little late. If you’re looking for the best things to do in Culebra PR at night, check out these fun spots. 

14. Dance the Evening Away at Dinghy Dock 

Dinghy Dock is a Culebra favorite for a good time. It’s a wonderful open-air beach bar to devour some tasty seafood, enjoy a beer, and the bay views, all while live music fills the air.  

We weren’t able to visit in the evening, but we did enjoy lunch at Dinghy Dock. In the clear water, there are giant tarpons that often eat diners’ leftovers. Rowen and Raven loved watching them swim while eating their lunch. 

15. Let the Evening Slip by at Mamacita’s Restaurant and Bar 

Mamacita’s is a no-frills eatery where the atmosphere is casual. The food isn’t anything to write home about, but it can be a fun, lively spot to hang out in the evenings in Culebra. 

16. Grab a Drink at The Spot

The Spot is a hot spot for locals and tourists alike. A small island bar, their drinks and fun company are known to be amazing, but there isn’t much seating inside.

Don’t be surprised if you stop by and see everyone hanging out on the street and the steps leading into the bar. 

17. Make Friends with the Locals at El Batey

If you’re looking for a fun sports bar atmosphere with a local flair, check out El Batey! They have flat-screen TVs to watch if there’s a big game you want to check out. Or you can jump into a game of pool yourself or take it to the dance floor! 

How to Get to Culebra Puerto Rico

Working out the logistics of getting to and from the island can be a little tricky, depending on your travel plans. If you take some time to do your research and plan, you won’t run into many difficulties.

You can get to Culebra, Puerto Rico, by either airplane or boat. The major deciding factor in this is cost.

The easiest and fastest way of traveling to Culebra Puerto Rico, from San Juan is to fly. There are flights leaving out of the airport in San Juan. It is a very short flight with stunning views of Puerto Rico and Culebra Island.

The Culebra ferry is a much cheaper option but doesn’t have a convenient San Juan departure. You would need to make your way to Fajardo, which is about an hour east of San Juan, to take the ferry. 

The last option is to join a tour that is going to Culebra. What is very nice and convenient about many of the tours is a lot of them offer pickup and drop-off from the Old San Juan area. If you don’t want to rent a car or aren’t comfortable driving, this is a great solution. 

Culebra by Ferry

There are two different types of ferry options when traveling on the Culebra Puerto Rico ferry from Fajardo. The first is the passenger ferry. The ride takes 45 minutes, and the boat travels fast. The second is the cargo ferry, which moves slower and takes about 90 minutes. 

The waters along the boat ride can be rough, so if you or anyone in your family struggles with motion sickness, it is a good idea to bring some Dramamine . We would also recommend the slower ride for any family prone to motion sickness. We did not have any problem with motion sickness on the cargo ferry.

A ferry ticket to Culebra is $4.50 per person for a round-trip. It’s a great price, but the savings comes with some trade-offs. If you are planning to purchase tickets at the ferry terminal you should arrive no later than 90 minutes before the departure time for the best chance to be able to get tickets. 

We got there about an hour early on a weekend. We were able to get tickets for our desired departure time, but the return time was full, so we ended up leaving the island later than we originally planned. Make sure you purchase a round-trip ticket to ensure you have a way to get back to the main island.

If you decide to take the ferry, just know that you will need to be flexible with your schedule and overall travel plans. 

Culebra by Air 

Flights to Culebra from San Juan are usually around $40 each way. You will save a lot of time going by airplane. The flight time is about 10 minutes. You can buy tickets through Air Flamenco or Vieques Air Link. It is a good idea to buy tickets ahead of time as each plane only has ten seats available.

If you are on more of a budget but still want to fly, you can fly out of Fajardo. This will require you to get to Fajardo, which, again, is about an hour east of San Juan. So, there is a time commitment associated with this choice.

You can rent a car to drive over to Fajardo or hire a taxi to take you over.

Where to Eat in Culebra Puerto Rico 

In addition to Dinghy Dock, we also ate at the Krusty Krab . It’s another seafood restaurant, but it’s well worth a stop in. 

It has a casual flair to it, as the menu is written on a chalkboard and is always changing. If the fish tacos are on the menu, order them! They were delicious and came in a very large serving size. Keep in mind this is a cash-only restaurant, so be prepared. 

Other popular spots to eat around town include Zaco’s Tacos and Tiki’s Grill !

Where to Stay in Culebra Puerto Rico

There are not any large resorts or hotels in Culebra, Puerto Rico, but there are a handful of small hotels and private rentals. If you are interested in a private rental or hotel, Cozycozy is a great resource for finding a place to stay on Culebra. On the site, you can compare a wide range of bookable Airbnb, apartment, hotel, and bed and breakfast offers.

They offer a variety of modern rooms ranging from standard queen bedrooms to standard triple rooms, which have a twin bed and full bed. It is also close to restaurants and is a quiet area.

Tips For Visiting Culebra Puerto Rico

Transportation on Culebra Island

Public transportation does not really exist on the island. Taxis operate throughout the little island and charge $3-5 depending on the length of the ride.

If you are just looking to see Flamenco Beach, there are shuttles that will take you from the ferry terminal to the beach. The shuttle prices are about $5.00 per person per way. Depending on how many people you have and how you want to spend your time on the island, this is a simple option.

We rented a Jeep for about $45 from Carlos Jeep Rental . In addition to car rentals, they have golf carts available. The golf cart rental costs less money, but if you have a car-seat-aged child, you are not able to rent the golf carts. It is nice to have air conditioning in the jeep.

There is a shuttle that will take you from the ferry terminal to Carlos Jeep Rental. It isn’t bad on foot either if you want to spend some time on a short walk wandering the streets of Culebra, Puerto Rico.

Internet and Phone Coverage on Culebra Island

Most United States phone providers will work on the Caribbean island and fall under your US plan.

Safety and Health

Mosquitos can carry Dengue as well as Zika in Puerto Rico, so make sure you bring adequate bug repellent.

We used Sawyer Products Premium Insect Repellent while we were there, and it worked great. We did not get any mosquito bites and had a good user experience. They carry both spray and lotion versions.

Toilet Paper

Toilet paper is sparse on the island. Most of the restrooms we visited did not have any, so we recommend bringing your own. We love the compact rolls that easily fit in a backpack or purse.

Power Outages

You can expect power outages while visiting Culebra, Puerto Rico. They are a common occurrence on Culebra, so it’s wise to be prepared. While we were eating dinner, the power went out and the restaurant continued running as normal.

Cash Availability

There is only one ATM on the Culebra, Puerto Rico so bring some cash with you. Some places only accept cash, so it’s essential to have some on hand. Some of the grocers and shops do accept Visa and MasterCard.

FAQ: Things to Do in Culebra Puerto Rico

Yes! Culebra is a tiny island, and most people are happy and hospitable to tourists. As long as you use caution, the same as you would traveling to any location, to keep an eye on your belongings and practice common sense you should be all set!  Also, when driving around the island, remember to use caution on rocky and dirt roads. Some roads aren’t maintained as well, and you don’t want to put your Culebra Island adventures on hold due to road troubles!

No, you cannot drive from San Juan to Culebra . The only way to travel to Culebra from San Juan is by flight. Ferries are an option as well if you’re willing to commute to Fajardo. 

Air Flamenco and Vieques Air Link are the main airlines that transport passengers from San Juan to Culebra. 

Culebra Island is approximately 115 km from San Juan. Flights can get you out to the island in a manner of minutes, and the ferries can do the same in 45-90 minutes. 

We recommend spending a couple of days on Culebra Island. This will give you a chance to enjoy the most beautiful beaches, head out snorkeling, take a scuba dive adventure, and enjoy the downtown area. Staying on the island overnight will give you a more local and authentic vibe to the island rather than rushing on and off in one day.

The best time to visit Culebra Island is from November to March. The climate is dry with mild temperatures, perfect for swimming in the ocean. You will also avoid the monsoon season, which usually leads to humid temperatures.

The weather on the island of Culebra is beautiful year-round . The average temperature is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The most popular place to see turtles in Culebra is at Tamarindo Beach and Luis Pena Marine Reserve .

I need to put Puerto Rico on my bucket list. Yummy food and so many beautiful beaches. It looks like you guys had the beach to yourself, what a great trip!

We would definitely recommend it. Puerto Rico is the perfect mix of culture and beaches without needing a passport! We were spoiled to have the beach almost completely to ourselves.

We want to go to Culebra again as well. There is a campground just a few steps away from the beach that we want to stay at.

Beautiful beaches, great people. I love the west side of the Island, Aguadilla, Rincon, Isabela. Great waves for water sports. We ended up buying a condo in Aguadilla. Not by the water but have ocean view.

Oh how awesome. We are hoping to go back in the next year and spend more time on the west side of the island. We heard it was so beautiful over there.

Hi Beth Ann. You can rent an umbrella right at Flamenco Beach if that’s where you’re planning on going. If you’re wanting to use it for a longer period then I would recommend bringing an umbrella over from the main island.

Culebra vs. Vieques: which Puerto Rican island is best to visit?

Separated from mainland Puerto Rico by an 8-mile stretch of choppy blue water, the two jewel-like Caribbean havens of Culebra and Vieques have an irresistible charm and laid-back beach vibe.

Disembark for a few days and you’ll uncover a wealth of surprises – horses roaming free in Vieques, endangered turtles in Culebra – and people who reclaimed their prized islands from the US Navy in 1975 (Culebra) and 2003 (Vieques) after more than 50 years of military occupation.

But it's the beaches that will have visitors to Culebra and Vieques purring with delight. Between them, the two members of the Spanish Virgin Islands have some of the most dazzling beaches in the Caribbean – best of all, many of them are deserted. Culebra and Vieques have yet to attract mass tourism, so there isn't a golf course, casino or humongous resort in sight.

Best things to do in Culebra

Long feted for its diamond-dust beaches and world-class diving reefs, sleepy Culebra is probably more famous for what it doesn't have than for what it actually possesses. There are no big hotels here, no golf courses, no casinos, no fast-food chains, no rush-hour traffic and, best of all, no stress.

Situated 17 miles off mainland Puerto Rico, but inhabiting an entirely different planet culturally speaking, the island’s slow pace can sometimes take a bit of getting used to. It’s home to rat-race dropouts, earnest idealists, solitude seekers, myriad eccentrics and anyone else who’s forsaken the hassle and hustle of modern life. It's also home to a range of gorgeous natural areas, bays, snorkeling sites, hiking trails and all manner of fine beaches.

Culebra's best beaches

Culebra’s beaches offer wild natural beauty. Tourist facilities vary, with plenty at Playa Flamenco and blissfully few at Playa Zoni . Several beaches are only accessible by hiking in, increasing the possibilities of having a Caribbean beach to yourself, at least for a few hours.  Playa Carlos Rosario and Playa Tamarindo  are great for snorkeling.  Isla Culebrita and Cayo Norte are two of the more popular cays off Culebra and are easily visited by water taxi.

Top 12 beaches in Puerto Rico

Turtle watching

Two of Culebra’s most isolated beaches – Resaca and Brava – are nesting sites for the endangered leatherback sea turtle, the world's largest living sea turtle (adults can reach 6.5 feet in length and weigh 1500 pounds). The nesting season runs from April through early June. Each year, a few volunteers are accepted by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources to monitor the delicate egg-laying process. Volunteers travel out to the beaches, where they count eggs, measure turtles and document the event for environmental records. The smaller hawksbill sea turtle (up to 3ft long and 250 pounds) also lays eggs on Culebra's beaches.

Diving and snorkeling

Despite reef damage from the US Navy testing era and endemic climate change pressures, Culebra retains some of Puerto Rico’s most amazing dive spots, including sunken ships, coral reefs, drop-offs and caves. Highlights include the Wit Power tugboat (which sank in 1984), the Geniqui Caves, El Mono boulders and the fish-filled water world of Cayo Ratón.

Good snorkeling sites can also be accessed from many beaches. Tamarindo is a good example of the bounty on offer: it teems with a spectacular variety of fish and features a 50ft wall of coral, all protected by the Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve. Other good spots include Playa Carlos Rosario and Playa Melones .

Culebra National Wildlife Refuge

More than 20% of Culebra is part of a spectacular national wildlife refuge , which was signed into law more than 100 years ago. Most of it lies along the coastline, including more than 20 cays. Home to three different ecosystems, the refuge is a habitat for endangered sea turtles and the largest seabird nesting grounds in the Caribbean. For visitors, it's a place for hiking, birdwatching and secluded beaches.

Where to stay in Culebra

Several guesthouses are a short walk from the Culebra's ferry dock, though there are many options island-wide. Some even have docks for boats. Culebra has an excellent selection of rental apartments and houses of all shapes and sizes dotted around the island, including many Airbnb and HomeAway properties.

Where to eat in Culebra

For a small island, there are plenty of choices when it comes to eating. Seafood figures prominently, much of it sourced from the fishing boats bobbing in the bay. Not surprisingly, most of Culebra's restaurants are in the tiny town of Dewey. Beyond town, keep your eyes out for food trucks, which offer cheap, tasty eats perfect for beach picnics.

Best things to do in Vieques

Measuring just 21 miles long by 5 miles wide, Vieques is renowned for its gorgeous beaches, semi-wild horses and sparkling bioluminescent bay. It's substantially larger than Culebra, and while it's still a world away from the bright lights of the mainland, the larger population here means more accommodations, swankier restaurants and generally more buzz.

Since the official withdrawal of the US Navy in 2003, Vieques has regularly been touted as the Caribbean’s next "big thing," with pristine beaches and a coastline ripe for the developer’s bulldozer. Fortunately, environmental authorities swept in quickly after the handover and promptly declared all the former military land (70% of the island’s total area) a US Fish and Wildlife Refuge. This has meant that the bulk of the island remains virgin territory. Development elsewhere has been slow and low-key. Understandably, Vieques’ residents – many of whom are continental US expats – are fiercely protective of their Caribbean nirvana.

Best beaches in Vieques

Now protected in the national wildlife refuge, many of Vieques' beaches are clean, untrammeled and paradisiacal. Calm and clear, Playa Caracas is reached on a paved road and has gazebos with picnic tables to shade bathers from the sun.

There's excellent snorkeling – lots of healthy sea fans and underwater life – off the eastern side of the beach. A favorite with locals, the gorgeous Playa La Chiva  is long and open with occasionally rough surf. It's easy to find your own large patch of sand, and you can find shade in the shrubs. There’s good snorkeling toward the eastern side of the beach, just off a small island.

Secluded  Playa La Plata is as far east as you can go. It's spread across a mushroom-shaped bay with icing-sugar sand and a calm sea that shimmers with a thousand different shades of blue. The snorkeling is good toward the western side of the beach. The road here is very rough; only a 4WD will get you close without walking. The deliciously deserted  Playa Escondida has absolutely no facilities, just jaw-dropping beauty.

Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

Lying within the protected confines of the  Vieques National Wildlife Refuge are some of the best reasons to visit Vieques. The refuge, once land used by the US military, protects vast tracts of largely pristine land containing four different ecological habitats: beaches, coastal lagoons, mangrove wetlands and forested uplands. It also includes an important marine environment of seagrasses and coral reefs.

Many colorful species survive in these areas, including the brown pelican and the endangered West Indian manatee. Vieques’ dwarfish thicket-strewn forest, which includes some indigenous cacti, provides one of the best examples of dry subtropical forest in the Caribbean.

Perhaps the finest Giant Ceiba Tree in Puerto Rico is situated on the right-hand side of the road as you head toward Punta Arenas , adjacent to the Mosquito Pier, a popular snorkeling site. Rumored to be 400 years old, it has become a symbol of the island's resilience.

Bahía Mosquito (Bioluminescent Bay)

Locals claim that the magnificent Bahía Mosquito  has the highest concentration of phosphorescent dinoflagellates not only in Puerto Rico, but in the world. A trip through the lagoon – take a tour – is nothing short of psychedelic, with the movement of your kayak, paddle, electric boat, even fish, whipping up fluorescent-blue sparkles below the surface. Reservations for tours are essential in high season; the best time to go is at new moon.

Where to stay in Vieques

Vieques has plenty of accommodation options for travelers. In Esperanza, boutique hotels and guesthouses line oceanfront Calle Flamboyan, while others are scattered among the surrounding hills. Most accommodations in Isabel Segunda are easily reached on foot from the ferry. Further afield, you'll find some of Puerto Rico's most interesting small, luxurious hotels, or you can stay on the beach if you're up for camping.

Where to eat in Vieques

Good food in a variety of cuisines and price ranges can be found across the island, and unsurprisingly seafood figures prominently. In Esperanza, most cafes are on Calle Flamboyan with enviable views over the turquoise water to Cayo de Tierra. Isabel Segunda's restaurants dot the town and have the best selection of Caribbean cuisine.

When to visit Culebra and Vieques

• The spring shoulder season (April through June) brings picture-perfect weather and fewer travelers. There aren't many discounts on lodgings, but you'll have less company on the beach; some days, it might just be you and the birds.
• The best viewing of the bioluminescent bay in Vieques is during the new moon. Some operators don’t go out when the moon is full. From April through June, wildlife fans can volunteer for a turtle-egg protection project on Culebra.

Several beaches on Puerto Rico are ideal for getting away from it all.

If you can dream it, you can beach it in Puerto Rico . With over 300 miles of coastline between the main island and smaller islands like Vieques and Culebra, beaches here unspool in cove after crescent of sandy perfection. That means there’s surely more than one beach in Puerto Rico with your name scrawled into its sands.

Will you flop down at a natural pool shaped like a half-moon on Puerto Rico’s north coast or head instead to one of the idyllic beaches beloved by the surf set on the island’s west coast?

Read on for some of the best beaches in Puerto Rico for getting away from it all.

1. Playa Mar Chiquita

Within 45 minutes of leaving the airport in San Juan, you can be in beautiful Manatí on Puerto Rico’s north coast, a city and municipality distinguished by looming limestone hills that peek from jungle-clad surroundings. The area is known for its blissful beaches, too, lined with lagoons and natural pools; among the best of them is Playa Mar Chiquita.

Here, a crescent-like sweep of beach is lapped by calm, protected waters a glacier-blue hue. While it’s quieter during the week, weekends bring food trucks selling empanadas and piña coladas to Playa Mar Chiquita—along with lots of local families enjoying the shallow waters. Rinse off from the beach later in one of the sublime outdoor showers in suites at the Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve just west of San Juan.

2. Playa Carlos Rosario

This rugged sweep of white sand bookended by forested headlands on the northwest coast of Culebra appears at the end of a dirt path that winds from the parking lot at Flamenco Beach. The 20-minute hike is well worth it: After meandering along the forested fringes of the Reserva Natural de Culebra, you’ll arrive at Playa Carlos Rosario and its prime snorkeling waters, where clouds of reef fish often school in the shallows.

If you prefer to arrive by boat, it’s easy enough to find captains offering their services back in Culebra’s main town, Culebra Pueblo (Dewey). The trip takes about 20 minutes.

3. Playa Caracas

Vieques’s bioluminescent lagoon tends to take the island’s spotlight, and it’s stunning, for sure. But beach lovers might be even more impressed by the powdery stretches of Playa Caracas, one of the finest examples of a quintessential Caribbean beach. Located on the island’s south coast, it’s one of the most easily accessible beaches within the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge yet rarely crowded. Dramatic rock formations surrounding the chalk white crescent of sand are carpeted with vegetation, and the surrounding waters are usually as transparent as a swimming pool.

To continue the zen theme, book a suite at the farmhouse-style boutique inn and yoga retreat, Finca Victoria , and stay surrounded by cacti and flowering gardens.

4. Cayo Aurora

Right off Puerto Rico’s southern coast, Cayo Aurora is a tiny cay that’s part of the Cayos de Caña Gorda. They’re near the mainland and the subtropical dry forests of the Bosque Estatal de Guánica , a United Nations Biosphere Reserve.

It’s easily accessible via private boat tours (or the ferry, when it’s running) from nearby Playa de Guánica, only 10 minutes away. If you’re feeling ambitious and find someone renting kayaks, you can also use your own paddle power to reach it. How you spend your day on the cay is up to you. For most, it’s all about frolicking in the natural surrounds, snorkeling in a mangrove-lined lagoon, or relaxing on another pristine Puerto Rico beach.

5. Zoni Beach

Culebra The visual parfait of diamond-dust white sand meeting turquoise and sapphire seas awaits at Zoni Beach on the east side of Culebra Island. From April to June, leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles haul themselves ashore on a beach lined with sea caves to nest.

Far less crowded than Culebra’s other main beach, Flamenco, Zoni is an idyllic place to linger along palm-lined shores or, come summer, swim in waters that approach bathtub temperatures. The sea is usually calm, too, because the beach is sheltered by the islands of Cayo Norte and Culebrita, just offshore, which add to the impressive views.

6. Pata Prieta Beach

Just east of Playa Caracas and within the undeveloped setting of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, Playa Pata Prieta is often called Secret Beach. And even if it’s not really a secret, it is one of the quieter and prettier beaches on an island brimming with them, ribboned with a thin strip of sand and backed by thick shade-providing palms and other tropical foliage. On calm days, the waters are mirror smooth and beckon beachgoers off the sand to swim among swirls of tropical reef fish. (Don’t forget your snorkeling gear .) Continue the reef theme with a stay at El Blok Hotel , where the architecture was inspired by Puerto Rico’s coral reefs and contemporary suites overlook the mangroves.

7. Playa Punta Borinquen

“When you order a board from your local [surfboard] shaper, there is a connection. We live on the island, know our waves, and create a board tailored to your surfing style,” Puerto Rico–based surfboard shaper Mika Ramírez explains to AFAR , sharing how surf culture is intertwined with Puerto Rico.

And while many head to the waves in Aguadilla in Puerto Rico’s northwestern corner, Playa Punta Borinquen is a favorite among local families who come to spread out and enjoy its wide, golden sands. Surfers gravitate here and along beaches to the south and north, too, where strong northwest swells pump out perfect tubes from shallow reef breaks.

8. Playa Buyé

In Cabo Rajo on Puerto Rico’s southwest coast, Playa Buyé is known for the clarity of its waters on an island lapped by them. Stretching roughly a half-mile long, it’s a favorite spot for beachgoers who enjoy a strand where they can go for a decently long stroll, too. Picnic tables shaded by almond trees and swaying palms are an ideal spot to unpack lunch with million-dollar views of the typically translucent sea. On the weekends, things can take on a party vibe, as the beach is a favorite among locals. But during the week, you can find long lonely stretches to unfurl your beach towel and breathe in the briny ocean air.

9. Playa Punta Soldado

Another fantastic Culebra beach awaits near the southernmost tip of the island at Playa Punta Soldado, where a sweep of golden sand fronts a semi-protected bay lapped by clear waters. Be sure to bring a mask and fins: There’s excellent snorkeling just offshore from the leftmost end of the beach.

With its lush hillside setting strung with hammocks and villas overlooking Fulladoza Bay, Club Seabourne makes for a quiet boutique hotel stay a 10-minute drive from Playa Punta Soldado. Several companies in Culebra Pueblo (Dewey) rent golf carts or Jeeps to make it easy to get around and explore.

10. Playa Escondida

You reach Playa Escondida, in the northeastern corner of Puerto Rico, via an easy 25-minute hike through a forest of tangled mangroves from the western end of Fajardo’s far busier Seven Seas Beach. Along the way, you may wonder whose domain you’re in, with large holes tunneled by land crabs littering the sandy path. Once you emerge at the secluded setting of Playa Escondida, chances are you’ll have the beach to yourself or be sharing it with only a few others.

11. Playa Luquillo

A 45-minute drive east of San Juan is the soft shoreline of Luquillo. The waves here gently lap the beach’s sands, and palm trees provide plenty of shade for an afternoon nap. Weekdays are your best bet for a crowdless beach experience, but the weekends come with their own perks if you want to step into local culture. The town’s kioskos come alive on the weekends and are only a 20-minute walk south of the beach. This group of 60 or so kiosks offer local foods like alcapurrias and empanadilla s, often with live music come nighttime.
