Use this handy guide to discover the road trip highlights from Melbourne to Mildura on the New South Wales border. It’s a fascinating road trip filled with surprises, delights and even a ‘world’s largest' landmark.

Victoria is a state with much to offer. While many revel in Melbourne’s vibrancy, soak up the Great Ocean Road’s laidback atmosphere or head east to uncover Gippsland’s natural wonders, far fewer travel inland to Victoria's rural heart.

Yet it is here, on a drive from Melbourne to Mildura, that travellers can discover charming historical towns, taste the wares of artisanal producers, and say g’day to the creative communities that prosper in rural Victoria.

Before you set off on the road, check your emergency car kit is in the boot, and ensure your emergency roadside assistance is up to date.

Highlights on your drive from Melbourne to Mildura

Under two hours from Melbourne, Bendigo is a regional standout in the heart of Victorian Goldfields country. Not only was it a place of historical significance during the gold rush era, but it’s also full of creative and culinary gems . UNESCO even designated the Bendigo region as a Creative City and Region of Gastronomy in 2019.

Bendigo’s Talking Tram is a unique way to discover the city’s gold mining heritage, as is an underground tour at the Central Deborah Gold Mine. If you’ve time, detour to the living museum at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat to experience the challenges and thrills of 1850s gold mining life.

Creativity comes in many forms in Bendigo. There’s artist expression, found at local art galleries and the popular Bendigo Art Gallery. Performative creativity impresses here, too, especially the contemporary Ulumbarra Theatre. It’s on the grounds of the once-formidable Sandhurst Gaol.

Then there’s Bendigo’s culinary creativity, where local chefs, cooks, and bakers couple their passion for food with the region’s quality fresh produce. The result? Distinct flavours and memorable dining experiences. Bendigo boasts several award-winning restaurants, plus a wealth of artisanal producers from craft breweries to boutique wineries to creative cheesemakers.

Ride on a paddle steamer on the Murray River at Echuca. Image: Visit Victoria

Echuca is a charming port town on the banks of the Murray River , one of the world’s longest navigable rivers. A country escape, Echuca offers impressive historical, cultural, and scenic attractions.

Connect to Echuca’s mid-19th-century heritage on a fascinating paddle steamer boat tour ; Echuca is home to the world’s largest operating paddle steamer fleet. Back in 1853, a paddle steamer from South Australia started the town’s thriving boatbuilding and riverboat trades.

The Port of Echuca was once Victoria’s second-largest port. Now it’s a living heritage precinct lined with well-preserved 19th-century buildings. The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is a worthwhile stop, as is the Murray River Paddlesteamers Discover Centre, the old sawmill, and Star Hotel.

For nature lovers, the native wildlife and red river gum bushland at Banyule State Forest in the heart of town is a joy - as is the Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk and the Horseshoe Lagoon trail in Moama. Echuca’s twin town, Moama is on the New South Wales side of the Murray River; a bridge connects them both. The Murray River Walk, one of the Great Walks of Australia, passes through Echuca, allowing you to explore part of this renowned 40-kilometre trail.

While Echuca’s history draws visitors, the town has a contemporary side, too. The High Street has quaint boutiques, galleries, and antique stores to browse, and the riverside cafés, restaurants, and pubs allow you to savour local flavours while soaking up Echuca’s relaxing ambience.

You might spot a wallaby at Gunbower Island. Image: Visit Victoria

To tick off a ‘world’s largest’ attraction off, head an hour south-east to Gunbower Island: the world’s largest inland island. The rich biodiversity of the surrounding wetlands attracts numerous bird and wetland species.

While access to the interior of Gunbower Island is limited to protect its fragile ecosystem, there is ample to do nearby. Bird watchers and photographers flock to the area, with many getting out on the waterways by boat or canoe to maximise their wildlife spotting opportunities. Fishing is also popular thanks to the Murray cod, yellowbelly, and silver perch that swim here.

Gunbower’s nature trails are fun to explore, with kangaroos, wallabies, and reptiles keeping you company. Many have interpretive signs to highlight the local flora, fauna, and sites of ecological note.

The Gunbower Island Forest Drive journeys through the Gunbower Island National Park and Gunbower State Forest. The drive starts in Cohuna (grab a map at the visitor centre), linking several cultural, historical, and ecological points of interest. Allow half a day and pack a picnic before you leave Echuca for Gunbower’s picturesque stops.

Two hours north of Echuca, Swan Hill invites travellers to enjoy their sun-soaked days (Swan Hill boasts more sunshine days than the Gold Coast), good food, good wine, and abundant outdoor and water-based activities.

At Swan Hill’s Nyah-Vinifera Park, 1,000 hectares of pristine nature, inviting billabongs, and attractive lagoons await. Wander the century-old red gums on a hiking trail, discovering historical sites of interest - like middens and canoe trees - from the Wadi Wadi people as you go.

For fisherfolk, landing a coveted Murray cod is a Swan Hill fishing rite of passage. Local bait and tackle shops have everything you need. Other Murray River activities include canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and waterskiing.

To tap into the region’s history, head to Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum to learn the WWII history of the Catalina Flying Boats. Australia’s first open-air museum, Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement , also impresses, showcasing life on the Murray from 1830 to 1930.

Mungo National Park is an excellent detour. Image: Visit Victoria

Mungo National Park

Mungo National Park is a site of significant historical interest and a rewarding detour before Mildura (stop in scenic Balranald to stretch your legs). In the late 60s and early 70s, geologist Jim Fowler discovered Australasia’s earliest known human remains, the Mungo Man and Mungo Lady. An estimated 42,000 years old, they connect the region to its Aboriginal roots.

Mungo’s dramatic rock formations, undulating sand dunes, and dried-up lakebeds feel otherworldly and leave you awestruck. Part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, the region is one of humanity’s most important sites.

Take a recommended guided tour with an Aboriginal ranger to maximise your experience here. The Paakantji, Mutthi Mutthi, and Ngaiampaa peoples collaborate to run excursions, revealing the park’s history, spiritual significance, and points of interest, like the clay-and-quartz Walls of China. For deeper immersion into Mungo National Park, multi-day outback tours are available.

If you’re road-tripping in a campervan or RV , rise early to watch the sunrise at the Red Top Lookout: the scenery is out of this world! The 10-kilometre Zanci Pastoral Loop is also great as the sun rises or sets. For non-campers, Mungo Lodge is a quality accommodation base.

farmers market

Mildura's Farmers Market is a great place to find local produce. Image: Visit Victoria

120 kilometres from Mungo National Park, Mildura is an idyllic end to your road trip. With a Mediterranean-like climate, Mildura offers the perfect blend of relaxing activities, historical gems, and delectable produce from its fertile land – it's known as the Food Bowl of Australia, after all.

Many of Mildura’s top attractions connect to the Murray River , the lifeblood of the state. Considered a Mildura must-do, a paddleboat steamer ride makes for a fascinating introduction to the Murray River, both from a scenic perspective and to learn the region’s maritime history. A houseboat is a relaxing alternative, or for a thrilling bird’s eye view, take flight in a tiger moth plane.

Mildura’s verdant pastures and quality produce inspire creative dishes, from farm-to-table fare to cosy cafés to artisanal treats you’ll want to take home. That there are also 250 wineries and cellar doors to explore, only lends to Mildura’s reputation as a foodie haven.

Boarding could be smoother but that's probably more to do with the airport infrastructure

I liked the friendly team, the roomy comfortable seats, easy to use on flight entertainment, flights on time,

Personal kind attention to all.App was not spot on, but staff able to deal with any requests.Staff were legends !!

Enjoyed the comfort of the seats, slight delay to departure time but prompt takeoff and landing.

It asks about entertainment tho it’s not applicable. 10/10 for Rex 👌🏻

Not sure how to answer on the entertainment as there wasn’t any.. Comfort, I wasn’t comfortable as I was on the window side and a morbidly obese man sat in the middle and eased out into my space. I had sciatica so I wasn’t able to move much to get comfortable. Food wise I have a wheat allergy and asked if there was a gluten free option and was given a Byron bay cookie which was lovely tho it wasn’t wheat free. Not to worry. I wasn’t expecting there to be any appropriate snacks for me anyhow. The staff were very generous with the snacks and their concern for the passengers. The staff were amazing tho. Truly amazing ! One of the staff must have noticed my discomfort and helped me out to stand in the back of the plane to stretch which I really appreciated. I would fly with REX again without hesitation. Thank you very much. It was my first flight with you and I look forward to my return flight home on Tuesday. Best wishes to your company 👌🏻

All good, was a one hour flight so no food or entertainment which was expected

Rex is an underrated airline. Its my first time flying them and they were fantastic. the only things that annoyed me about my flight were things other passengers did so it was nothing i or REX could change

Really enjoyed flying with Rex the boarding and booking baggage on was easier than most. I will beat using Rex next time.

On time and a quick flight and staff vert good

There was nothing I didn’t like, prices a little lower would help

Following a marathon flight riddled by delays and changes from Santiago, Chile, my flight to Melbourne from Sydney was on schedule but I was transferred to the next flight. The reason by ticketing and the floor manager was I missed the entry to flight by one minute! That's right, the emphasised that if I was 1 minute earlier I would be on the flight. I asked what was the point them emphasising 1minute overdue and how that helped me or the situation. They didn't care at all. Replying that if it was one minute earlier they would've done something and smirking delivering the information. Australian's do call Australia home, Qantas calls Australian's suckers.

1) crackly headphone jack 2) one of the emergency seats recline. Usually second row does. But in this case neither did 3) food was scrambled eggs or fruit. 4) fruit should not be the option to eggs 5)miserable unpleasant crew not a smile. Thought that was a virgin thing

Amazing! Was put on the earlier flight and I requested for an aisle seat and was given it. Thanks Qantas!

The staff we fantastic and seemed to work very well with each other

Business lounge in Melbourne mediocre. Look at Emirates or Qatar, Qantas! Great friendly crew. Food was good but Emirates is a level above. Business seat good. But can’t compare to Qatar. Main reason for booking Qantas is loyalty and terrific connection via Perth to LHR.

I was pleasantly surprised with my flight to LA with Qantas. Although seats were not the roomies, service was excellent.

Wonderful crew, good food. Absolutely loved the wine spritz and wish I could buy it!

It's only a short trip from Sydney to Melbourne, which i have done many times. The trip met my expectations

I really appreciated the fact that when I checked my bags at the Quantas counter after arriving from an international flight an hour early, the agent noticed I had a very long layover. He then found an earlier flight that allowed me to get to Cairns several hours earlier than I planned. That was amazing because I had already traveled over 20 hours and wasn’t looking forward to such a long layover. It allowed me to see my daughter and grandchildren much earlier (it had been two years since I visited last).

Many Australians have been left stranded at airports across the country after budget airline Bonza "temporarily" suspended all flights on Tuesday.

The company entered voluntary administration within hours of the cancellations, and the administrators have since confirmed the fleet will remain grounded until Thursday, May 2.

Here's what we know so far.

First up, what is Bonza?

Bonza Aviation was set up as a budget regional airline and its first flight took off in January 2023.

The airline aimed to target the regional routes that weren't serviced by the larger carriers like Virgin , Qantas or, more recently,  Rex Airlines .

For example, with Bonza you were able to fly from the Sunshine Coast to Mildura without having to stop in a capital city.

The Transport Workers' Union said there were roughly 150 Bonza workers between the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne.

Who owns Bonza?

The airline was the brainchild of  Tim Jordan, who held senior commercial roles with Virgin Australia . He was the chief executive of Bonza.

A man stands on an airport runway with his hands in his pockets.

Back in 2023, Mr Jordan he said the airline would lead to cheaper  ticket prices  due to greater competition.

"I think in any industry anywhere in the world, additional competition is positive for downward pressure," he said at the time.

The airline has the backing of a US investment firm called 777 Partners .

Based in Miami, the firm describes itself as "investment platform that helps bold entrepreneurs transform visions into enduring value".

A "Flair"-branded aircraft flies through a grey sky.

Among other things the firm owns an "ultra-low cost" airline in Canada called Flair Airlines and a minority stake in the Melbourne Victory A-League team.

What's happening with the Bonza flight cancellations?

Customers arrived at airports across Australia to learn their flights had been cancelled.

Mr Jordan released a two-line statement just after 8am saying all services would be temporarily halted:

"Bonza has temporarily suspended services due to be operated today (Tuesday 30th April), as discussions are currently underway regarding the ongoing viability of the business. "We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market."

Basically, Mr Jordan said he was in talks about whether the business can continue.

But within hours a notice was filed to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) stating that the company had entered voluntary administration.

This means there is an opportunity for the director or a third party to rescue Bonza, or for the company to be restructured.

The airline is yet to provide any update, but administrators Hall Chadwick released a statement late on Tuesday afternoon saying that it is : "currently considering the continued trading of the company's operations during the course of the administration period including the continuation of employment of all employees of the company".

"The company's fleet is currently grounded pending discussions with relevant parties and key stakeholders," the statement reads.

"The grounding of the fleet is currently up to and including Thursday 2 May 2024, and customers with bookings during this period are advised not to travel to the airport."

Have the cancellations come out of nowhere?

It's not the first time the airline has cancelled flights. Roughly 1,600 customers were left in the lurch when its Darwin-Gold Coast flights were cancelled in December .

An airliner soars above a stretch of coastline.

That cancellation was extended to March this year , flights were cancelled out of  Mount Isa  and the airline has been facing ongoing questions about  the timeliness of its arrivals .

Aviation expert Keith Tonkin said analysts felt it was difficult for the airline to make a profit.

He says that's because routes it took "had relatively thin margins" — but he says it's not impossible to break into a market dominated by Qantas and Virgin Airlines.

"Where there's a will there is a way," Mr Tonkin says.

"But Bonza's model has seemingly proven to be difficult to sustain."

Aviation analyst Geoffrey Thomas, the editor-in-chief of the website Airline Ratings, said he understood the airline's backers, 777 partners, had made changes to the leasing and financing of its aircraft.

He said the budget carrier may have been caught off guard.

777 Partners has been contacted for comment.

"I think that the problem of Bonza is overseas, with leasing companies, and not the local management, not the business model," Mr Thomas said.

Has the government said anything?

Federal Transport Minister Catherine King says she's looking into it. She says she's spoken to the chief executives of Qantas and Virgin.

"Both airlines stand ready to assist stranded passengers needing to get home," Ms King says.

The Transport Department has established a hotline for stranded passengers –  1800 069 244 – that will be operating until 10pm on Monday.

Ms King says she expects Bonza to deal with its customers in a transparent fashion.

"My department has reached out to Bonza and our expectation is that they keep passengers informed of their options and their consumer rights," she says.

Can I get a refund from Bonza?

Affected customers received text messages on Tuesday directing them to fill in an online form, which states:

"We will be issuing you a refund for this flight and, if you no longer wish to travel on them, any other flights on the same booking reference as this cancelled flight. "To allow us to process your refund as quickly as we can, please fill in the details below within the next 24 hours and note the form may close for responses after that time. "Once you have completed the form, you can expect the refund to appear in your account within 21 days. The refund will be paid to the payment method you used at the time of making the booking. "Sorry again for the inconvenience and we hope to welcome you onboard a Bonza flight in the future."

Customers whose flights have been cancelled in the past say they have had difficulty getting refunds from Bonza.

But the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has protections in place for airline customers.

According to the ACCC, a travel service provider  must give the option of a refund if it can't provide a replacement service for a cancelled flight in a reasonable amount of time.

If you booked a now-cancelled Bonza flight using a credit or debit card online, you may be able to have that transaction reversed through your bank or financial institution, but it's unlikely to be a speedy process.

The Transport Department's hotline is focusing on helping stranded Bonza customers book Qantas, Virgin, or Jetstar flights.

The airlines have offered passengers stranded mid-journey on Tuesday complimentary seats, where available, on flights to the airport nearest to their final planned Bonza destination.

Bonza has not responded to requests for comment.

Bonza enters administration as flights are cancelled across the country amid airline scaling back routes

Budget airline Bonza has entered voluntary administration, leaving travellers stranded across the country.

The airline had already slashed flights across the country with the carrier’s CEO in discussions around the “viability” of the business.

As of Tuesday morning, multiple flights operated by the airline leaving from major airports across the country have been cancelled.

Some of the flights that have been canned include those departing from the Sunshine Coast scheduled to land in Gladstone and Rockhampton. Several that were due to leave from Melbourne airport have also been cancelled.

Hall Chadwick, an accountancy and business advisory firm, has been appointed as administrator.

The company explained to news.com.au that all flights are grounded pending discussions, and customers with bookings from now until May 2 are being told not to go to the airport.

In a statement from the airline’s CEO Tim Jordan, services will be “temporarily suspended” while discussions surrounding the “viability of the business” take place.

“Bonza has temporarily suspended services due to be operated today, as discussions are currently underway regarding the ongoing viability of the business,” Mr Jordan said on Tuesday.

There's mass cancellations across the Bonza network.

In a further statement sent to news.com.au, Mr Burton apologised to customers impacted by the airline’s sudden wave of cancellations.

“We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we are working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian aviation market.”

Following the disruption, rival airlines Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar all stepped in to offer assistance for those in need.

Virgin Australia announced on Tuesday morning that they would assist any passengers in need of a seat or who have been left stranded by the Bonza cancellations.

“We are aware of the temporary suspension of Bonza flights,” the airline posted on X.

“We will immediately support any passengers stranded mid-journey by offering complimentary seats on Virgin Australia-operated flights to the airport nearest to their final planned Bonza destination.

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia have stepped in to assist displaced Bonza customers.

“For those Bonza guests at an airport, please see a Virgin Australia customer service representative or call our Guest Contact Centre.”

Qantas and Jetstar offered a similar service, providing flights for the “significant impact” the cancellations have had on passengers.

“For Bonza customers who are due to travel today or who are stuck away from home, Jetstar and Qantas will assist by providing flights at no cost where there are seats available,” the statement read.

However of Bonza’s 36 routes, there are only six overlapping routes with either Jetstar or QantasLink — including Melbourne to the Gold Coast, Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast, Avalon to the Gold Coast, Gold Coast to Cairns, Melbourne to Mildura and Melbourne to Alice Springs.

In additional, the three rival airlines extended their thoughts to Bonza aviation colleagues and their families who will “feel the impact of today’s news”.

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia all offered recruitment opportunity discussions for those hoping to stay in the aviation field.

Bonza launched in January last year, after more than a year of planning and spruiking quirky aircraft names and cabin crew uniforms.

The airline, which focused on flights to regional destinations including Cairns, Gladstone and Albury, also flies to Melbourne. However, Sydney and Brisbane are off the airline’s route path.

Earlier this month, Bonza announced they would be reducing the frequency of flights to some of its most popular routes, including Gold Coast to Cairns from five weekly roundtrips to three, Gold Coast to Townsville down from five weekly roundtrips to three and Gold Coast to Melbourne Tullamarine will be reduced from four weekly roundtrips to one as of May 1.

There are reports that cabin crew have been told the airline is “finished”. Picture: Garry Wilkinson

In an interview with the ABC ,a man from the Sunshine Coast, whose wife works for the airline, claimed 20 cabin crew were called into a meeting early on Tuesday and told the airline had “finished”.

“She went to work this morning, as per usual, they just went in — there were two crews there — they were just basically told that Bonza has finished,” he told the ABC.

“They’ve been told that they’re not flying until further notice.

“They’ve all been told that the bottom line is that Bonza will no longer be flying.

“They’re pretty devastated. It’s their job. She’s been in it from day one. It’s a bit of a blow for Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast.”

The administrators have established a hotline for customers for any queries they may have on 03 8678 1600.

Qantas Moves On Bonza Crisis Recruiting Crew & Offering Customers Flights

  • Qantas offering free flights to Bonza passengers on shared routes, ensuring safe travel after Bonza's sudden halt in operations.
  • Virgin Australia also steps in, providing complimentary travel on select routes to help stranded Bonza passengers.
  • Qantas offering support to Bonza staff with employment opportunities.

Qantas has moved swiftly to plug the hole left by Bonza's recent voluntary administration, offering employment opportunities for its staff and free travel arrangements for passengers left in the lurch. Virgin Australia has also offered to fly Bonza passengers for free on select routes.

Qantas steps in after Bonza administration

Australia's national carrier will help Bonza passengers impacted by the low-cost carrier's cessation of operations with free flights on routes it shares with the airline, or on another "close alternative route". Qantas and subsidiary Jetstar operate six routes that Bonza previously served:

  • Melbourne Gold Coast (Jetstar)
  • Melbourne Sunshine Coast (Jetstar)
  • Avalon Gold Coast (Jetstar)
  • Gold Coast Cairns (Jetstar)
  • Melbourne Mildura (QantasLink)
  • Melbourne Alice Springs (Qantas)

Travelers booked on a canceled Bonza flight will be able to fly on one of the above routes at no cost, depending on seat availability. Additionally, Bonza customers will be offered alternative travel arrangements close to their origin or arrival airports. For example, Brisbane Airport as an alternative to Gold Coast, or Melbourne as an alternative to Avalon. Affected passengers can contact Qantas or Jetstar to arrange travel.

Virgin Australia will also offer complimentary travel to affected passengers, although it shares fewer routes with Bonza - these two routes are Melbourne – Gold Coast and Melbourne – Sunshine Coast. However, like Qantas, it will also offer travel to and from nearby airports.

BREAKING NEWS: Bonza Flights Suspended - Is This The End For Bonza?

Bonza has advised passengers with reservations from now until May 2nd not to go to the airport as discussions about the airline's future continue. The carrier's CEO, Tim Jordan, has stated that the suspension of services is "temporary" as talks "regarding the ongoing viability of the business" are held.

Staff opportunities

Qantas added that it has set up a dedicated careers page for Bonza staff interested in joining it or subsidiary Jetstar, "particularly in specialized fields which are unique to aviation" - you can find this on the Jetstar careers website.

When an airline folds, it isn't just inconvenient for passengers booked on its services. All the airline's employees, from ground teams and flight planners to cabin crew and pilots, are suddenly out of work. It's common practice for other airlines to step in and recruit staff left in the lurch, as it's an effective way to bring readily trained and experienced professionals onto the team.
