Why Go To Baltimore

Once pegged as a blue-collar town with a high crime rate and a gritty underbelly, dramatized by pop culture portrayals in series like "The Wire" and "Serial," Baltimore today has a new sheen, transforming itself into a vibrant, culture-rich East Coast mainstay. And though it clings to its working-class roots, Baltimore – or "Balmer" as some residents say – also boasts contemporary museums, a sophisticated dining scene and a reimagined Inner Harbor that's luring art-loving types, outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike. This revitalized Charm City offers Yankee-Southern fusion architecture and a rich and eclectic culture, jam-packed with trendy art galleries, lively theaters and world-class collections at the  Walters Art Museum  and the  Baltimore Museum of Art .

You can opt for a traditional Baltimore experience, filled with forays to historical sites like  Fort McHenry National Monument , leisurely strolls along the Inner Harbor and Federal Hill Park and, of course, freshly caught blue crabs steamed and seasoned with a heavy dose of Old Bay. Or, if you've traveled to Charm City before, experience Baltimore's literary side with a trip to the  Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum  before blending in with other baseball aficionados as you cheer on the Orioles at  Camden Yards . And there's no way better to get a sense of Baltimore's quirky culture than at HonFest in June, when swarms of ladies sport leopard prints and sixties-era beehive hairstyles to support Baltimore's hard-working women. As the sun goes down, take back a pint of locally crafted beer at one of the up-and-coming gastropubs and nightlife venues scattering Fell's Point or Federal Hill. With its laid-back vibes, plentiful historical and cultural attractions and picturesque setting along the Chesapeake Bay, there's a good chance Baltimore will charm you.

Baltimore Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Baltimore is from June to August, but you'll have to book early. While summer brings heavy crowds, peak season hotel rates and soaring temperatures, the city overflows with unique events and festivities. Spring and fall usher in milder temperatures, but the winter months can get quite chilly, so be sure to arm yourself with plenty of layers if you plan to visit Cham City at this time of year. And don't forget your boots – precipitation is common year-round.

What to Eat

The Baltimore dining scene is as varied as any other big city, however, due to its close proximity to the water, visitors tend to gravitate toward the seafood here first. The most popular seafood dish by and far is Maryland crab. This famous crab is the blue crab, which resides in the Chesapeake Bay. The blue crab is such a hot commodity that 50% of the country's supply of blue crab comes from Maryland. If your main foodie mission in Baltimore is to grub down on these tasty crustaceans, make sure to come during the season (April through November) and seek out a restaurant that has True Blue certification, a distinction given to restaurants that use more than 75% of local crabmeat. Since restaurants in Maryland aren't legally required to identify the source of their crabmeat, you could easily walk into a seafood restaurant and end up eating blue crab from the gulf coast, or any crab from anywhere in the world. Popular seafood restaurants with True Blue certification include Gertrude's Chesapeake Kitchen and Phillips Seafood Restaurant .

While crab is certainly a star attraction in Baltimore's dining scene, there's more to the city's foodie landscape than seafood. In order to properly soak up Baltimore's culture as a whole, you'd be remiss not to grub down at one or more of the city's many Black-owned eateries. African Americans make up more than 60% of the city's population and as such, have shaped Baltimore to be what it is today. One of the most lauded Black-owned restaurants in Baltimore is Ida B's Table , which serves modern soul food. There's also Land of Kush , which has been praised by locals for its delectable vegan dishes. Ekiben serves Asian fusion fare and boasts two locations in Baltimore while Union Craft Brewing is a leader in Baltimore's brewery scene. For a cozy cafe experience, schedule a detour for Dovecote Café or Water for Chocolate . For baked goods, hit up Crust by Mack , located in the popular Whitehall Market, which serves everything from cookies to crab pies.

Other standout restaurants in the area include Clavel , a taqueria and mezcaleria that serves top-notch cocktails and makes its tortillas by hand. La Cuchara stands out for serving Basque cuisine (a province in northern Spain) while Woodberry Kitchen will charm those who appreciate farm-to-table fare. The fine dining venue Charleston is known for combining French and low country cuisine cultures together. For a casual setting that doesn't skimp on quality, hit up comfort food haven The Food Market . Wherever you choose to eat, make sure to save dessert for Sacre Sucre , an impressive pastry shop that could easily stand tall next to a proper Parisian patisserie.  Or, you could take the easy route and get all of your courses in one go thanks to Baltimore's several food markets, including Broadway Market , Lexington Market  (the oldest continually running market in the country) and Mount Vernon Marketplace .

Over the years, Baltimore has carried a less-than-stellar reputation for safety, perpetuated by crime-heavy HBO series "The Wire." Although some parts of town might live up to those portrayals, well-traversed tourist areas are generally safe for visitors. While tourists will most likely not encounter any kind of violent crime, including drug-related activity, especially in busy areas like the Inner Harbor, Mount Vernon, Fells Point and Federal Hill, you should still use common sense and stay vigilant of your surroundings. Like any large city, Baltimore has its fair share of robberies and muggings. Stay prepared by stowing away your valuables and sticking to busy streets, especially at night. If you're unsure of where you are going, take a cab or drive yourself, since neighborhoods can quickly change from block to block.

Getting Around Baltimore

The best way to get around in Baltimore is via car, whether it be your own or a rental; most visitors use the agencies at the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). A range of taxis and shuttles are also available to drive you the 10 miles north from the airport to the city's downtown area. Once you get there, you can use the public transit systems, run by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), which offer a convenient and cost-effective way to navigate the city. The MTA offers bus, Metro Subway, Light Rail and MARC train services, along with the Charm City Circulator, a free bus service introduced in 2010 that connects visitors to a variety of popular attractions .

The Inner Harbor is where you'll find an impressive collection of military ships, including the USS Constellation .

A Local’s Travel Guide to Baltimore, MD (Things to Do & More)

Last updated on february 29, 2024.

Baltimore, MD

Baltimore is Maryland’s largest city and it’s filled with history and fame. A lot of people confuse it for being the capital of Maryland, which it isn’t, but it’s nonetheless a great place to spend a day or two for travellers and an awesome day trip from DC. Every building is so beautifully crafted and the entire city sits on its original streets, making it feel as it must have been a century or two ago. Add in delicious food and a passion for the sports teams and it’s a very cultured place. I love this place so much that I’ve already bought a home here.

Baltimore, MD

The History of Baltimore

The city dates back to the colonial era. Named after Lord Baltimore, Baltimore was founded as a port city in 1659-1661; however, the town of Baltimore as we know it officially came into existence much later, in 1729.

The city’s history is laced with unique stories. One of Baltimore’s highlighted achievements came during the War of 1812, when Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” here in Fort McHenry, which can still be visited today. Shortly after came another achievement – the establishment of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the first west-bound railroad in the United States. The Baltimore Basilica of the Assumption, still standing, was the United States’ first cathedral. You’ve probably read about it if you’ve studied American architecture. The city has a history of firsts.

Maryland’s Civil War history is a bit complicated because of our status as a border state. We were part of the north but much of our past agriculture relied on slave labour, so many people here supported the southern cause. Baltimore, in one of the most northern parts of the state, became a refuge for freed slaves who were travelling north – notably Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, who stayed here for an extensive period of time. Also, much of the Lincoln assassination was actually planned here in Baltimore rather than in Washington, DC, though the buildings it was planned in no longer exist.

Though Jim Crow plagued the city for decades, Baltimore also got another claim to fame: Johns Hopkins Hospital, established with the intent of equal care for all races. In the 1930s and 40s, Baltimore also accepted many Jewish refugees from Europe and its huge Jewish community still lives on today. It’s the background for the popular musical Hairspray .

To date, Baltimore has been home to many notable figures, including Edgar Allan Poe, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Babe Ruth, Zelda & F. Scott Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nancy Pelosi, Tupac, and Oprah Winfrey. And believe it or not, Elmo himself is from Baltimore! It holds a very large cultural history that extends through today.

Areas to explore in baltimore.

Baltimore, MD

Let’s get this out of the way: a lot of people go to the charmless harbor and leave without getting a real taste for the city. So I want to tell you some places you can visit and experience the best Baltimore has to offer.

For tourists, the Baltimore Harbour is difficult to not see, and it boasts the architectural splendor of the National Aquarium , which also houses great exhibits if you’re into marine life – but note that it is quite pricey. I recommend going on Friday nights as tickets are half off. There are several chain restaurants such as Pizzeria Uno and the Hard Rock Cafe in the Inner Harbour area, which makes the place look quite generic. Lots of people flock to the Harbour but it’s one of the blandest areas of Baltimore. It’s really disappointing that it’s become the representation of Baltimore when there’s so much more to the city.

Baltimore, MD

Luckily, some of the more local areas are only a short walk away. To the east you have Fells Point , debatably the most popular area of Baltimore for locals. There’s lots of restaurants, bars, stores, and old town charm in this area. Fell’s Point is right next to another popular area called Canton . Canton extends from Patterson Park all the way down to the water and is filled with local gems like restaurants, shops, bars, etc. The Canton Waterfront Park is a nice place to go and watch the sunset, and Patterson Park is a great place to take a run or unwind. It’s like the Central Park of Baltimore. Both Canton and Fells Point are excellent places to stay, particularly if you like nightlife.

South of the harbor is Federal Hill , which is just as nice an area and a little less undiscovered. It’s filled with nice restaurants and shops and is often quite busy on weekend nights. It’s another nice place to stay, though it is a bit of a walk from the rest of the city. If you go atop Federal Hill Park, you can get sweeping views over Baltimore’s harbor too.

Mt Vernon, Baltimore, MD

Those are some of the areas surrounding the harbour, but there are a few more areas I recommend exploring if you’re staying in Baltimore for longer. I particularly enjoy Mt. Vernon , a neighbourhood filled with soul and decadent architecture. Nearby is Charles Village , the home of Johns Hopkins University, which is a bit more modern but filled with college-aged people. However it also houses lots of good restaurants. Then there’s Hampden , Baltimore’s hipster home. It’s a bit on the smaller side but is always a vibrant place to see.

Baltimore, MD

All are beautiful areas filled with old buildings and many walks of modern life. And everywhere you go, there’s tonnes of locally-owned restaurants. If you’re vegan/vegetarian, Baltimore actually has a huge veg scene and a tonne of delicious veg-friendly and veg-exclusive restaurants . I also have my own blog post reviewing some of the vegan restaurants I’ve tried.

Things to Do in Baltimore

You can’t complete a Baltimore visit without the Walters Art Museum . It’s my favorite museum in Baltimore and is said to be one of the best art museums in the world! There’s also the Baltimore Museum of Art , which is a bit smaller. Both are free to visit. If you like more modern art then I also recommend the American Visionary Art museum , which is many peoples’ favorite. Since the Walters is quite large, seeing all three in a day would be very rushed, so definitely pace yourself.

Baltimore, MD

If you like house museums, I recommend heading up to the Evergreen Museum . It’s a charming mansion filled with art and it’s very off-the-beaten-path. Make your reservations ahead of time so they’ll know you’re coming.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of our most iconic residents. You can visit where he once lived at the Edgar Allan Poe museum , which does not look as it originally did, mind you. His grave is also at Westminster Hall . The large white one is his current resting place, but you can also venture into the cemetery to find his original resting place – thoughtfully marked with a raven headstone. You can even go to a Poe-themed bar called Annabel Lee Tavern , which actually has good food and drinks. For more Poe, you can head on over to my blog post that explores the write in Baltimore and beyond.

For more history, Fort McHenry is a popular place to see in Baltimore as it’s the birthplace of the National Anthem. Inside there is an exhibit on the anthem and the fort’s history, and the grounds are free to explore. Many people like to go jogging or dog walking there. There’s also the B&O Railroad museum , as Baltimore is the home to America’s first railroad, and the Baltimore Museum of Industry . There’s also the lesser-known Maryland Museum of History and Culture but I didn’t find it particularly noteworthy.

Baltimore, MD

Baltimore’s also a very notable city in Catholic history. Our Basilica of the Assumption is dubbed America’s First Cathedral, finished in 1821. We are also home to the USA’s first saint! Her name was Mother Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton. You can visit her birthplace, called the Mother Seton House .

Baltimore, MD

Also for history buffs, we have the old ship (USS Constellation) that’s fun to check out on the harbour, and the Reginald F. Lewis museum of African-American history, which I consider a must-see since Maryland has played an important role in Black history. Something I’d really like to see in the future is a museum dedicated to Baltimore. But I live here, so maybe I better get started on creating it!

For younger visitors, the Maryland Science Centre and Port Discovery are fun places to visit, as well (in addition to the National Aquarium of course). They’re all in the same vicinity so it makes for an easy trip.

Another popular thing to do in Baltimore is see a sports game. We have two stadiums right downtown, the M&T Bank Stadium (American football) and Camden Yards (baseball). So if you want to day trip to Baltimore, ending the day with a game is a great option.

Baltimore, MD

Is Baltimore safe? (Baltimore Safety Map)

It depends on the part of the city, so it’s really important you choose a good place to stay. All the aforementioned neighbourhoods are generally fine.

Baltimore can be a safe place to visit, no more dangerous than say Paris or New York City. But in certain areas, it can most definitely live up to its reputation. The city is really patchy so one area can be lovely, and the next block can be riddled with crime. It’s all about knowing where, and where not, to go.

So I’ve made a map of places to avoid, and places I feel comfortable taking friends to. It’s just a rough outline and is based on my experiences.

Baltimore Safety Map

Simply put, I wouldn’t live in this city if I didn’t feel safe. There’s a lot to see, do, and enjoy in the unmarked sections – but it’s really, really rough once you get into those red areas.

What is the weather in Baltimore like?

The weather here can be very frustrating because of global warming. I advise packing layers. In the summer, it can get very hot and humid. In the winter, it can be freezing cold with a dash of warm days, and sometimes hot days. In the spring and autumn it can either be hot, or warm, or chilly. So all in all, layers are the best way to go when packing for Baltimore.

You should also bring an umbrella since it tends to rain every few days, but generally the days here are sunny.

What are some seasonal things to do in Baltimore?

Autumn is a great time to visit because Baltimore hosts a ton of events. They change every year so I recommend checking Facebook or the Baltimore website to see what’s on when you’re in town.

I have my own list of things to do in Maryland during summer , autumn and winter . If you’re in town for December then I highly recommend Baltimore’s German Christmas Village . It’s a very charming Christmas market with good food, hot wine, and artisan sellers. My favorite seasonal activity!

What is driving & parking in Baltimore like?

When there’s no sports games, driving in Baltimore is usually traffic-free, especially compared to our neighbour DC. During sports games, downtown can get pretty crowded and people are usually out redirecting traffic. The thing you have to look out for most is the potholes. There are a lot of them!

As for parking, there is generally ample street parking available. I strongly recommend avoiding the parking garages at the Inner Harbor because they are grossly expensive. If you go nearby, like to Fells Point, Downtown (a few blocks north of the harbor), or Federal Hill, you can probably find paid or free street parking, or a much cheaper garage.

How do I get to Baltimore without a car?

Your best bet is to take either the MARC or Amtrak trains to Penn Station. Penn Station is near Mount Vernon. For longer trips you can also take the Megabus but it does not go to Baltimore city ! You will have to take a bus to the city and it will add about an hour each way to your trip. I don’t advise this option for day trips.

How do I get around Baltimore without a car?

Baltimore has a free Charm City Circulator bus that goes around popular areas. This is a great way to get around town. Otherwise there are CityLink busses , which do cost money to take, but these can get you to more obscure locations.

Wrapping Up

Baltimore, MD

There are so many great things about Baltimore and I truly believe it is an undiscovered gem. It’s rough around the edges but lots of us who live here love it. There’s also so many people who come here and say they were surprised it was so nice and there was so much to do.

I wish everyone who visits explored Fells Point and Canton at the least, since Baltimore has so much local flavour to offer. The best thing about Baltimore is exploring its old architecture, good eateries, and colourful street art that’s dispersed throughout the city. The city has many secrets to be uncovered.

Frequently asked questions

  • First of all, pack in your passport, important documents, credit cards and medications. Next, you’ll want some entertainment to help pass the time. A thrilling book and a tablet filled with your favorite shows are good options. If you hope to take a quick snooze, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of noise-canceling headphones will also come in handy. Finally, leave some space for a few toiletry items to ensure you hop off the plane feeling fresh as a daisy.
  • Put all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like your beloved pocket knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosols and fireworks, are also prohibited.
  • The goal here is to feel as comfortable as you can. Layer up with loose, natural-fiber clothing and remember to bring a pullover just in case you get chilly. Always go with flat, slightly roomy shoes as your feet may swell during the journey. Leave the stilettos and heavy boots in your checked luggage.
  • Unfortunately, a risk of flying long distances is developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged inactivity. To prevent this from happening, take every opportunity to stretch your legs and walk around the cabin. Compression tights and socks are another easy way to help lower your risk.
  • Have your passport and travel documents close by. They’re the first items you’ll be asked to present to airport security.
  • After that, both you and your carry-on luggage will be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, take off anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Items like your belt, jacket and earphones will be required to go through the machine.
  • All electronic devices, including your laptop and phone, will also need to be scanned.
  • Remember to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit in a single quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
  • The right choice of footwear can save you several minutes. Hiking boots are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on sneakers usually aren’t.
  • Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, put them in your checked luggage. They won’t be allowed in the cabin.

Top 5 airlines flying to baltimore.

Delta is one of the best airlines I have flown

Made the Atlanta to Pittsburgh trip many times, with Delta no issues

I always fly with Delta. My friends tell me their horror stories of flying with other airlines. I just smile and say, “You should fly Delta”

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

So so. Terrible aircraft choice for that leg of the flight.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Missed the flight because of them and up geting a rental car

Delayd flight out of atl as always miss my conection in dfw no flight untill next day

Not much seat room, but that was unexpected. But the seat headrest was very uncomfortable.

First the good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Flight was smooth and plane was very clean and new. Now the bad, seats have almost no padding on your behind. I was in exit row so I had tons of leg room for a 6' 2" bean pole with long legs. Everything was extra - water, soda, snacks everything besides oxygen. Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries.

First the good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Flight was smooth and plane was very clean and new. Now the bad, seats have almost no padding on your behind. Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries. They dont really bother you about carry-on size, I brought a descent sized backpack and they didnt even check.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Seats suck, not enough room, overcrowded planes, hectic situation all together.

Pretty good. Would’ve been excellent if we would have left on time and the crew wasn’t late.

I do not like the customer service, I had an emergency and needed to cancel a pet reservation right after I had booked it and they would not do anything but issue a credit. I haven't flown in years as I have 7 kids and don't have spare time. I want my $125 back on my card please

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

Delayed..4 times...completely disorganized boarding. After 5 hours they scrambled to move ppl off plane bc they overbooked. Then they didn't have a cabin crew. WiFi on plane didn't work. Zero amenities. Once we boarded we sat on tarmac for an hour. Explore all alternate options including purchasing a pair of hiking boots and walking to your destination instead of flying spirit.

what I like about Spirit is that the pilot and crew are good communicators. The plane itself - well, its a budget airline and you get what is expected, But I generally just feel safer, somehow, when I know more about what is going on - and Spirit has always done a good job of telling me what is going on: why the delay, why the turbulence, why this and that... and that means a lot to me.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Flight was OK. Seats were good no cell phone charges on the plane no TVs or entertainment.

There were 3 leg for the trip and each leg was delayed by 90 minutes or more. The boarding process takes forever with people waiting on the jetway even though most folks do not have carry-on. The whole process is poorly managed.

Flight cancelled and was told by a rude gate agent that they don’t accommodate on other airlines. Had to wait 5 hours for a connecting flight that had a 7 hour layover. Would not allow bags to be checked early so we couldn’t go through security .Had to rent a car for the afternoon to store bags and get a meal. Also incurred a hotel fee. No apology or reason given for the cancellation- just rudeness.

They cancelled the flight then did nothing to help us rebook. It was awful - I won’t fly with them again

The process of buying the ticket and navigating all the hidden charges that Frontier throws at you was a terrible experience. The actual airport experience and flying was fine.

The truck that was refueling the plane drove away with the hose still connected to the plane and ripped part of the plane off with it

Not have to pay for every single item to take a flight. Seating and delays sucked.

Flight was cancelled and I had to spend the night in the airport lugging my suitcase around

If you don’t check in 24 hours in advance, they will charge you $110 to check your bag instead of the $30. I did not get an email with this information and did not check in. In addition, my flight home was cancelled at layover and I had to spend the night in the airport, and then have another layover at another airport before making it home. Will not fly frontier again.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Port of Baltimore on Track to Fully Reopen By End of May

Containers and cranes along the water at the Port of Baltimore

The timeline to reopen the main shipping channel into the Port of Baltimore remains on schedule, as work continues to mitigate the fallout from the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The Dali  container ship crashed the Baltimore bridge in the early morning hours of March 26, killing six people and shutting down traffic to the port. Since then, three smaller, temporary channels have been opened to allow vessels through to assist in clean-up efforts. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates the waterway will be fully reopened by the end of May.

On April 19, the U.S. Department of Transportation reaffirmed that timeline in a meeting with the National Economic Council and East Coast port leaders. Port leaders also explained how they've been able to accommodate the recent increase in container vessel traffic in other East Coast ports, as a result of the closure at the Port of Baltimore.

The Biden administration cites a variety of factors that have led to minimal impacts to the nation's supply chain in the weeks since the bridge collapse. That includes the monitoring of container volume and terminal use through its Freight Logistics Optimizations Works (FLOW) initiative. FLOW was launched in the wake of the pandemic in 2022, collecting and sharing data from freight hubs, rail terminals, and warehouses to better predict import import volumes and traffic.

The DOT met with various East Coast alternatives to the Port of Baltimore shortly after the bridge collapse, and used data from FLOW to determine the hubs with the most capacity to receive the diverted vessel traffic. Container volumes and port capacity have continued to be monitored through FLOW to ensure that no single port is overloaded.

Baltimore port to open deeper channel, enabling some cargo ships to pass after bridge collapse

The Port of Baltimore is preparing to open a deeper channel for commercial ships to get in and out for a few days

BALTIMORE -- Officials in Baltimore plan to open a deeper channel for commercial ships to enter and leave the city’s port starting on Thursday — a significant step toward reopening the major maritime shipping hub that has remained closed to most traffic since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed last month.

The new channel will be 35 feet (12 meters) deep, which is a substantial increase over the three other temporary channels established in recent weeks. It puts the cleanup effort slightly ahead of schedule, as officials previously said they hoped to open a channel of that depth by the end of April.

Five of the seven cargo ships that have been stuck in Baltimore’s harbor will be able to pass through the new channel, including one loaded car carrier, officials said Tuesday, marking one month since the deadly disaster. Other ships are scheduled to enter the port, which normally processes more cars and farm equipment than any other in the country.

“Four weeks ago, our way of life was dealt a huge blow with the collapse of the Key Bridge,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said during a news conference.

The cargo ship that toppled the bridge had lost power and veered off course shortly after leaving the Port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka. The Dali remains grounded amid the wreckage as crews work to remove massive pieces of mangled steel that came crashing down onto the ship’s deck.

Six members of a roadwork crew — all Latino immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras — plunged to their deaths in the collapse. Four bodies have been recovered from the underwater wreckage while two remain missing.

Relatives of the victims have been granted visitor visas, which will allow them to enter the U.S. for memorial services and, in some cases, bring their loved ones back home for burial. The immigrant aid organizations CASA and Catholic Charities’ Esperanza Center announced Monday evening that 16 family members have arrived in the U.S. with another eight expected this week.

Officials said salvage crews have now cleared enough debris — over 2,900 tons so far — to open the new channel to “commercially essential vessels” from Thursday until the following Monday or Tuesday. Ships will be required to have a Maryland pilot on board and two tugboats escorting them through the channel.

The passage will then be closed again until roughly May 10 while crews work to remove steel from the Dali and refloat the ship, which will then be guided back into the port, officials said.

The port’s main channel, with a controlling depth of 50 feet (15 meters), is set to reopen next month after the ship has been removed. That will essentially restore marine traffic to normal.

“We are going to work efficiently and we are going to work safely and we are not going to choose between the two,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said during the news conference.

In a court filing Monday, Baltimore’s mayor and city council called for the Dali’s owner and manager to be held fully liable for the bridge collapse, which they said could have devastating economic impacts on the region. They said the port, which was established before the nation’s founding, has long been an economic driver for Baltimore and the surrounding area. Losing the bridge itself has disrupted a major east coast trucking route.

The filing came in response to an earlier petition on behalf of the two companies asking a court to cap their liability under a pre-Civil War provision of an 1851 maritime law — a routine procedure for such cases. A federal court in Maryland will ultimately decide who’s responsible and how much they owe.
