India’s tour of Ireland 2023 will begin on 18th August with first of the three T20Is at Malahide.

As India explore options for the upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA, they have made another big change in their squad. Jasprit Bumrah will be making his comeback after almost a year on the cricket field and as a captain. This decision gave a sense of exploring opportunities among the probables as a leader in the T20I setup. Bumrah will be leading the India squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland in Malahide. Ireland have recently booked their tickets for the upcoming T20 World Cup next year along with Scotland after missing out on the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 .

The first game of India’s tour of Ireland will begin on 18th August at the Village Ground in Malahide. The 2nd T20I will be played on 20th August, and the final T20I will be held on 23rd August in Malahide. Last year, in 2022, under Hardik Pandya the team toured Ireland for two T20 International games. Ireland came closer to winning the final game, but somehow India managed to defeat them by four runs. Jasprit Bumrah will be leading the young Indian squad, with the likes of Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma getting their maiden call-ups in the series.

Bumrah’s elevation as a leader has also given a signal that Indian management is still not sure and is exploring the leadership options for the upcoming T20 World Cup, provided Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have stayed away from the shortest format from a long time. Kohli, Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja are all staying away now, and maybe the team will go with a young and new setup in the T20 World Cup. For Ireland, Paul Stirling will be the leader of the group against India. The series will be broadcasted live on Sports 18 on TV and Jio Cinema on digital platforms.

BCCI Announces India tour of Ireland 2023 Schedule

BCCI confirms the India tour of Ireland 2023 and announced the schedule for the three-match T20I series. The tournament will be played later this year.

BCCI Announces India Tour of Ireland 2023 Schedule

Three T20I matches will be played during the India tour of Ireland. All three matches will be held at Malahide, on the outskirts of Dublin, between August 18 and 23. The series comes immediately after the conclusion of India’s tour of the West Indies in July and August.

“We are delighted to welcome India Men back to Ireland for the second time in 12 months,” Warren Deutrom, Chief Executive of Cricket Ireland said in a statement as quoted by ICC.

“We saw two sold-out matches in 2022, so to have a three-match series this year should give even more fans the opportunity to enjoy what is always a memorable occasion.”

“Our sincere thanks to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), first, for their continued inclusion of Ireland in the Indian team’s busy itinerary and also for working with us to ensure as fan-friendly a schedule a possible – having matches on a Friday and Sunday will hopefully maximise the availability of fans,” he concluded.

6.38pm There was a lot of hype about Jasprit Bumrah's return coming into this series opener and he lived up to it right in the first over of the match, with an inducker doing Andy Balbirnie in before Lorcan Tucker gifted him a second wicket when he tried to go across the stumps to scoop him. Even apart from the wickets, he was on the money with swing and seam movement as well as his yorkers. That first over set the tone for most of the innings, with Prasidh Krishna also picking up two wickets on his T20I debut, and an injury comeback of his own. Ravi Bishnoi chipped in with a couple of wickets as well but Barry McCarthy kept Ireland in the game with a fantastic knock down the order. Chasing 140, India's openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad did just enough to get India above the par score before rain stopped the game. Craig Young came into the attack right after the powerplay to remove Jaiswal and Tilak Varma off consecutive deliveries but he couldn't even complete his over before the game was interrupted, and eventually called off. India captain Jasprit Bumrah is the player of the match. Here's what he has to say: "Felt very good. So many sessions I did at the NCA and the practice games. Didn't feel like I missed out a lot or I'm doing something new so credit to the staff there. Very happy to be back and always good to contribute. [Any nerves?] Not really, when you're captaining you are thinking more about the whole team and not just your own performance. Very happy that the weather was helpful for the bowlers. In every game you want more and you always search for a perfect game. Credit to them as well for keeping their nerves in a crisis. [On competition within the Indian team] Everybody has a lot of belief in their game and I think the IPL also helps them. The bunch that we have is very confident and that's a good sign for our team. [On the crowd support] It's always good wherever we go we get a lot of support."

Barry McCarthy : "Always nice to contribute to the team. Disappointed to not go over the line. [On partnership with Campher] We knew we could put a score on the board. We are both aggressive players and we wanted to stay positive. I think playing the positive way brings the game into the hands of someone who is going to get you to a score. Taking the game to the opposition is the best way. Happy to contribute to the team no matter what position I bat in."

Rahul R: "McCarthy should be player of the match." That's not a bad shout at all! Was a superb knock that really rescued Ireland.

Prajwal: "Jaiswal is too good a player to play an ugly pull like that and throw his wicket away. He did that in the WI series as well. He needs to learn to not get bogged down by a couple of dot balls." But that's the flipside to taking an aggressive approach. India have come under criticism for being too conservative in this format and Jaiswal is someone who, especially since the last IPL season, has taken an attacking template. Pacer Zaman Khan and leg-spinner Usama Mir have been left out of the squad. Both players were a part of the series against New Zealand and their exclusion leaves a very slim possibility of them making it to Pakistan's squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

As per a press release issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Mohammad Rizwan, Azam Khan , Muhammad Irfan Khan and Haris Rauf underwent a medical assessment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore and the PCB medical panel and the team management have expressed satisfaction over their fitness.

Notably, Irfan, Rizwan and Azam had got injured during the course of the New Zealand series and were asked to report to the NCA. While Azam sustained a grade one tear in his right calf muscle, Rizwan and Irfan were sidelined due to niggles.

The Men's National Selection Committee feels that the 18-member squad covers all the bases and can produce bright results on the forthcoming tours. It also encouraged Usama and Zaman "to continue to focus on their cricket so that they are available, if required".

Ahead of the scheduled tour, the Pakistan Cricket Team faced a huge blow after their ace speedster was denied a visa, and he will not be travelling with the team to play the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland. 

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remains hopeful that Mohammad Amir will obtain his visa promptly.

This setback is not new to Amir as he has been in the limelight due to concerns regarding his involvement in spot-fixing, which led to brief imprisonment in the United Kingdom.

Ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan will travel to Ireland and England on this tour for the preparation of the ICC marquee tournament. 

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had earlier announced the 18-member squad for seven games that are scheduled to take place between May 10 and May 30. This tour serves as their final set of fixtures ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, jointly hosted by West Indies and the USA.

Before their participation in ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in June, Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to play in 7 T20Is, comprising 3 matches against Ireland and 4 T20I matches against England.

During the press conference, when asked about Pakistan's strategy to counter India's most potent batter, Virat Kohli, Babar Azam emphasized that Pakistan prioritizes planning for not just individual players but for the entire Indian team, comprising all 11 players.

"As a team, you always plan against different teams and according to their strengths. We don’t plan anything against only one player. We plan for all eleven players. We don’t know much about the conditions in New York and we will plan accordingly. He [Virat Kohli] is one of the best players, and we will plan against him as well," Babar said.

Virat Kohli is regarded as a significant threat to Pakistan due to his outstanding performances in past high-pressure matches between India and Pakistan. Kohli has amassed an impressive 488 runs, including five half-centuries, in 10 encounters against Pakistan, boasting a remarkable average of 81.

Babar Azam optimistic regarding Gary Kirsten’s appointment as Pakistan's white-ball team head coach

Last month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made a significant move by appointing Gary Kirsten as the head coach of their national team's white-ball cricket for a two-year contract.

Kirsten, a South African national, brings with him great experience, having previously served as the head coach of both the Indian (2008-2011) and South African (2011-2013) international cricket teams.

"He (Kirsten) is a very experienced coach, and his presence should be beneficial for us all. He is already taking a lot of interest in the planning for the World Cup and discussing strategy with the team management," Babar said during the press conference.

Haris Rauf is set to return to the Pakistan team after missing the series against New Zealand after recovering from a shoulder injury suffered during the PSL. Hassan Ali too makes a comeback in the squad that will travel to Ireland and England for the T20I series. Pakistan will play three T20Is against Ireland and four against England in preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

"They are a few fitness issues with Muhammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf, Azam Khan and Irfan Khan Niazi but there has been a significant improvement in their fitness and we are confident they will play in the coming matches," Wahab said.

Wahab also justified recalling pacer Hasan Ali for the upcoming tour, claiming that he was already being considered and that he is essentially a backup for Haris.

"If Haris is fit and performs well in coming matches he is our first choice. He has started bowling but if he doesn't come through we have Hasan Ali." Haris got unfit during the initial stages of Pakistan Super League and has not played since February.

Razzaq stated that leg-spinner Usama has been dropped because Pakistan already has Shadab Khan and Abrar Ahmed in its roster. Yousuf claimed that the recent 2-2 tie in the T20 series against a depleted New Zealand team was not a terrible outcome.

"It is true that New Zealand were missing some main players but it is also for the first time that we also fully implemented the rotation policy by trying out new players in the series," he said.

Yousuf also said that they were pushing the players to be more innovative in their playing their shots and admitted that some players came up short on that front. "Look unless we are not ready to accept failure and move our batters will never be ready to adopt innovative stroke play," he said.

Wahab also said that they had spoken with the new head coach Gary Kirsten and they all agreed that first and foremost they had to remove the insecurity and fear of failure from the minds of the players. "Our aim is to give them an environment where they can give their beat and play fearlessly." Wahab also said that selecting the playing eleven would remain the domain of the captain and the selectors would not interfere in that area.

The selectors also defended Babar Azam's ability as a captain.

"No one is a born captain but from what we saw in the NZ series there was improvement in his leadership and we are hopeful he will become better and he has captaincy experience. We want to remain on the same page with him," Razzaq said.
