Public Fill

Public fill arises from construction, excavation, renovation, demolition and road works. Comprising of rocks, concrete, asphalt, rubbles, bricks, stones and earth, public fill is suitable for reuse in reclamation and site formation. Hard materials such as rocks and concrete can be recycled as aggregates for concrete/asphalt production or as granular materials for road sub-base and drainage layers, etc.

Management Strategy

The strategy to manage public fill comprises three major tasks - reduce, reuse and recycle. Concerted efforts in the construction industry are required in the following areas -

(a) Reducing

public fill at source through better planning, design and construction management to reduce the overall volume of public fill produced. Government departments are required to prepare management plans for public works projects to critically examine alternatives to reduce public fill produced during design stage and to monitor its implementation during construction.;

(b) Separating

out waste such as timber, paper, plastic etc. to prevent public fill that could be reused or recycled from going to landfills. Contractors of Government works contracts are required to prepare and implement waste management plan to carry out on-site sorting and implement a trip-ticket system to ensure that public fill and waste are delivered to the appropriate reception sites/facilities.

(c) Reusing

public fill in reclamation, site formation and other earth filling works where possible. Whilst sustaining the overall development of the territory, the construction industry has generated large amount of construction and demolition materials from construction, excavation and demolition works every year. About 90% of these construction and demolition materials are recyclable or reusable inert materials, which are commonly known as public fill, and can be used as fill materials in reclamation, site formation and other earth filling projects. We provide reception facilities to receive surplus public fill arising from the construction industry. The surplus public fill is temporarily stored in the fill banks, pending opportunity for reuse. This not only helps to combat fly-tipping but also serves as a stable source of public fill for future reclamation projects. In recent years, local projects had only been able to reuse a portion of surplus public fill generated. As a result, it is necessary for us to deliver part of the surplus public fill to designated area in the Mainland for beneficial reuse.

Placing order and collection of public fill for reuse in construction works are simple. Relevant procedures are summarized in the flow chart.

The project registration form and order form can be obtained:

Public Filling Service

The beneficial use of public fill provides an economical source of fill materials for reclamation and earth-filling projects and also helps preserve the precious landfill space in Hong Kong, which would otherwise have to be used for the disposal of such material. Marine mud, household refuse, plastic, metal, industrial and chemical waste, animal and vegetable matter and other unsuitable materials are not allowed to be disposed of at any public fill reception facility.

Statistics of construction and demolition materials received at the Public Fill Reception Facilities and Landfills

The Public Fill Committee (PFC) is responsible for implementing measures to promote avoidance, minimization, re-use and recycling of construction and demolition material. It also oversees the management of public filling operations and facilities. In addition, the PFC produces and circulates the Forecast of Public Fill Generation and Demand Tables and designates the public fill reception facilities for public works projects. The Secretariat of the Committee is provided by the Fill Management Division .

Decode Hong Kong’s Public Transport System With Our Handy Travel Guide

Whether you’re interested in top-of-the-class bars, shopping haunts, culinary gems, or hiking trails, there’s no dearth of reasons to plan a holiday in Hong Kong. Team that up with Hong Kong’s public transport system — ranked the third best in the world — and you have a swinging getaway!

When on a holiday, it’s natural to dish out extra cash on taxis in a bid to avoid the complexities of public transportation. However, Hong Kong suggests that you save your money for souvenirs and sightseeing because its local transport is extremely simple to crack. Tramways, ferries, metros, and buses — the myriad modes of transportation in Hong Kong promise delightful views, convenience, and an authentic tryst with the Pearl of the Orient .

From trams to taxis: Hong Kong’s local transport options

HK tourist bus

Zip around the city with Hong Kong’s elaborate bus network. Five major companies operate in the city: KMB in Kowloon and the New Territories, Long Win Bus in the Tong Chung area, Citybus and NWFB in the area of Hong Kong Island, and New Lantau Bus on Lantau Island. These buses set off as early as 5 am and continue until midnight. Fret not, for there is a fleet of overnight buses — the N route — that run from 12 am to 6 am. If possible, hitch a double-decker to enjoy the delightful views from the upper deck. But of course, this is not the fastest mode of public transport in Hong Kong, owing to traffic and signals.

Hong Kong also gratifies with dedicated tourist buses — double-decker rides with an open upper floor that offers fleeting views of the city. In addition to the views, the background commentary in English will keep you informed and entertained. The first of the two tours offered by the tourist buses is the Day Tour, allowing you to choose between the Hong Kong Island Route, the Kowloon Route, and the Green Route, which includes Stanley Market and Aberdeen. The best part? The Day Tour packs a traditional boat ride in Aberdeen, a trip on the funicular railway to Victoria Peak, and a ride on the Star Ferry. The second option (no points for guessing) is the Night Tour. This is a 1 hour 45 minute ride around Kowloon, and it includes the Symphony of Lights show.

Another fascinating way to get around the city while soaking up those harbour views is through the ferry. While there are 11 companies offering ferry services in Hong Kong, the most famous is Star Ferry . The two main routes connecting Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are Central to Tsim Sha Tsui , and Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui. The ferry runs every 6-10 minutes, from 6.30 am to 11.30 pm. Ferries also travel from Hong Kong (Central Ferry Pier) to other islands like Lamma Island and Cheung Chau Island. For the complete schedule of all ferries in Hong Kong, visit the Transportation Department’s official website .

HK tram

Hong Kong’s oldest and most environment-friendly mode of transportation is its tram system. It exclusively employs double-decker trams, which promise a fun ride through bustling markets. Currently, there are 163 trams in Hong Kong that run from the west to east on Hong Kong Island, with 120 stops. Make sure to carry the exact change to pay the driver when you disembark.

Mass Transit Railway (MTR)

hong kong public transport

The easiest and most efficient way to get around the city is through the metro, also called the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). With a total of 12 operating lines, this metro system connects the entire region seamlessly. The Island Line (dark blue) runs throughout Hong Kong Island, from east to west. The Tsuen Wan Line (red) goes from Hong Kong to Kowloon, crossing the Victoria Harbour in between. It also connects the Island Line at Central and Admiralty while crossing tourist-friendly destinations like Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. Depending on the station, the trains run from as early as 5.50 am to 1 am. During peak season, the frequency of the metros is 2-4 mins, which increases to 4-6 minutes during the off-season.

hong kong

If you fancy a less crowded and cosier mode of public transport in Hong Kong, we recommend the Minibus. With just 16 seats, these buses come in two types: the Green Minibus (a scheduled service) and the Red Minibus (no specific route). However, unless you speak fluent Cantonese, we wouldn’t advise hopping onto the minibuses.

the red taxi

Colour-coded, meter-abiding, and reasonably priced — what’s not to like about Hong Kong taxis? The Red Taxis with silver roofs operate in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island and go everywhere except Lantau. The Blue Taxis, on the other hand, run only in Lantau. Lastly, the Green taxis with silver roofs provide service in the New Territories, including remote islands, mountain villages, natural parks, and more. Bear in mind that if you’re in a New Territory but your destination is Hong Kong Island, you must take the Red Taxi. While some taxi drivers converse in English, others may only speak Cantonese. Hence, it’s advisable to have your destination penned down in Chinese.

Local transport in Hong Kong — Cost, routes & apps

Whether you choose the bus, taxi, metro, ferry, minibus or tram, modern tourists have ample options to get by in Hong Kong. While all the modes are extensively interconnected throughout the city, the MTR is quicker, the ferry takes the cake for the most surreal views, and the tram promises a story-book experience. Simply put, pick your choice of transport based on the time cap, need, and number of people.

Cost-wise, the basic fare for the red taxi is 24 HKD (USD 3), with an additional 1.70 HKD (USD 0.22) charged for every 200 metres travelled beyond the destination, or for every minute the driver has had to wait. You can easily book a taxi using apps like HKTaxi App , Uber and FlyTaxi. The tickets for the Star Ferry are also fairly cheap, at just 2.20 HKD (USD 0.28) for a general seat, and  3.70 HKD (USD 0.47) for a top-deck seat.

The fare for MTR rides depends solely on the distance travelled, with average costs ranging from 4.50 HKD to 14.40 HKD (USD 0.58 to 1.84). The tickets for metro rides can be bought from the MTR stations, and are of two types — single tickets for a one-way journey to the destination and 24-hour tickets for unlimited travel throughout the day, barring special services like the Airport Express. The 24-hour ticket can be purchased online in advance or from the MTR stations at a cost of 65 HKD (USD 8).

Similarly, the bus rates also depend on the distance travelled and can range anywhere between 4.50 HKD and 47 HKD (USD 0.58 to 6). It’s important to note that if you’re paying by cash, the fare must be paid with exact change. Book your seat on the bus easily using apps like Citymapper , Citybus, and Hong Kong Bus Route.

A much simpler way to finance your commute in the city is via the Octopus Card. This efficient payment tool allows cash-free transactions at all major public transport services, as well as for entertainment, shopping, dining and more . There are two ways to get your hands on the Octopus Card:

(a) Download the Octopus app on your mobile: Simply download the Octopus app on your Apple or Huawei smartphone and top up your balance without standing in long queues. This can be done using your debit or credit card. It’s important to note that you must pay a refundable deposit of 50 HKD (USD 4) on installing the app. On culminating the Hong Kong holiday, apply for a refund of the deposit and the remaining value on the app.

(b) Get the physical ‘Tourist Octopus’ card: Starting at 39 HKD (USD 6), this card features a striking Hong Kong design and makes for a valuable souvenir. There is no initial deposit for this card, and it can be reused on your subsequent visits to the city. The card can be purchased at MTR and Ferry customer service centres, as well as the Admiralty Bus Station. Additionally, it is also available at the MTR customer service centre at the airport. The card can be recharged at MTR stations, and common stores like 7-Eleven, Circle K, Starbucks, and McDonalds. Before leaving the city, head to any MTR customer service centre to claim a refund on the card.

This Octopus card and app helps you make cash-free payments, and are especially convenient on trams and buses where you need to pay in exact change.

Getting to and from the Airport

ANNOUNCEMENT

ANNOUNCEMENT

The free in-town check-in services are suspended until further notice. For details, please check the  official website .

Located on the Lantau Island, the Hong Kong International Airport has a comprehensive and well-developed transportation network. One could easily commute between the airport and the city in around 30 minutes with a reasonable fare, using the Airport Express, buses, taxis or hotel shuttle buses.

AIRPORT EXPRESS

The MTR’s high-speed  Airport Express  takes approximately 24 minutes to reach Hong Kong Island and is the fastest way to get between the city and the airport. Both Kowloon and Hong Kong stations provide free  in-town check-in services  for major airlines. Please contact your airline for further information.

Taxis are readily available from the taxi pick-up area in front of the airport’s Arrivals Hall. If you’re travelling to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon you’ll need to catch a red taxi. If you’re headed for the New Territories you’ll need a green taxi, and those going to Lantau Island will require a blue taxi. All taxis in Hong Kong are able to take passengers to and from the airport. Fares are metered and detailed information about charges are clearly displayed inside each cab.

There are more than 20 convenient Airbus ‘A’ routes that can take you from the airport to key locations on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and in the New Territories (including Lantau Island) with fewer stops than an ordinary city bus. When you exit the Arrivals Hall, turn right to find Airbuses and city buses .

COACH AND LIMOUSINE CHARTER

Passengers who require their own personal limousines, minivans, vans and group coaches (buses) can book their transport from service providers located in the Arrivals Hall.

MTR – Hong Kong’s railway system

MTR – Hong Kong’s railway system

Getting around Hong Kong couldn't be easier with the quick and efficient Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system . This covers all major districts in the territory, including stops at the boundary with Mainland China (Lo Wu Station and Lok Ma Chau Station).

The MTR also operates a light rail system that runs between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun in the New Territories.

Please note: Luggage size restrictions apply. Details here .

Buses and Minibuses

Bus

Buses in Hong Kong are plentiful, comfortable and air-conditioned. Especially popular are the double-deckers that offer great views of the surrounding city from the top deck. Route number and destination are displayed. Fares are paid upon boarding, based on distance travelled and exact change is required if paying by cash. Octopus cards are accepted on all buses in Hong Kong.

There are four major bus service providers in Hong Kong, operating across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Kowloon Motor Bus  and Citybus provide services around Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories; whereas New Lantao Bus mainly operates on Lantau Island and Long Win Bus covers the area of North Lantau Island and the airport.

Minibuses are small buses that carry up to 19 people. Green minibuses operate along specific routes at fixed prices. Fares are paid upon boarding, based on distance travelled and exact change is required if paying by cash. All green minibuses accept Octopus cards. Red minibuses operate along routes that are not always fixed and passengers can get on and off anywhere along the route, except where special prohibitions apply. Fares are paid as you alight when travelling on a red minibus and the driver can usually provide change for small notes.

The ability to speak a bit of Cantonese and having some familiarity with Hong Kong will be a bonus when travelling on minibuses. Passengers are required by law to wear seat belts when one is available.

Tram

Awarded with the Guinness World Record™ for the ‘largest double-decker tram fleet in service’ in 2021, Hong Kong’s historic street trams still operate on the north corridor of Hong Kong Island through Western District, Wan Chai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay and North Point. These double-decker streetcars have been travelling through Hong Kong's busiest thoroughfares since 1904 and continue to be an affordable, inexpensive and fun way to get around.

No matter how far you travel, each tram ride costs the same flat fare and exact change is required if you are paying by cash. All trams accept Octopus cards. You need to get on the tram at the back and then pay the exact fare at the front when you’re getting off.

With the exception of some very remote areas, taxis are plentiful throughout Hong Kong. They can usually be hailed on the street (except in restricted areas) or summoned by phone. All are metered, relatively cheap, air-conditioned and clean.

TYPES OF TAXIS

Taxis in Hong Kong are categorised by three colours, each indicating a geographical area. All taxis can travel to and from Hong Kong International Airport as well as Hong Kong Disneyland.

For taxi fares and additional charges, visit  Hong Kong’s Transport Department website .

TIPS FOR A HASSLE-FREE TAXI TRIP

  • Taxis are usually easily hailed along the street, although they can’t pick up or drop off passengers in certain restricted zones. It’s often a good choice to opt for either a taxi queue at a hotel or a taxi stand.
  • Drivers are required to use the taximeter and passengers are required to pay the exact fare as recorded by the taximeter.
  • Always ask for a machine-printed receipt. If the machine is not functioning, the taxi driver is obliged to provide a hand-written receipt.
  • Taxis in Hong Kong mainly accept cash. Some taxis accept electronic payments, such as Octopus, credit cards and Alipay.
  • All taxis are regulated and taxi drivers are required to display their taxi driver identity cards on their dashboards.
  • Passengers are required by law to wear a seat belt when one is available.
  • Taxi fare information will be listed on the inside of the taxi, including surcharges e.g. for baggage and tunnels.
  • If you can't read the price, the taxi number, or the fine print on the receipt, ask for a hand-written version.
  • If you encounter any problems while using a Hong Kong taxi, such as suspected overcharging, take down the taxi driver's name and licence plate number as shown on the taxi driver identity card on the dashboard. Then contact the Transport Complaints Unit Hotline to lodge your complaint.

Ferries

As a coastal city, Hong Kong regularly operates ferry routes that connect Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the Outlying Islands.

FERRIES BETWEEN HONG KONG ISLAND AND KOWLOON

The cross-harbour ferries are a fun way to hop between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Enjoy the stunning harbour view as you sail between Central and Hung Hom or on the Star Ferry routes.

The Star Ferry is a charming vessel that transports passengers between Hong Kong Island (Central and Wan Chai) and Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui). It offers views of both sides of the harbour, and is as much an attraction as it is a mode of transport.

Fares vary slightly between the upper and lower decks, as well as between weekdays and weekends, and are paid at the barriers when boarding. Passengers can pay by Octopus Card, coins or use cash to purchase a token from the machines at the pier.

FERRIES BETWEEN HONG KONG ISLAND AND OUTLYING ISLANDS

Ferries operating from the Central Ferry Piers on Hong Kong Island provide services to the main Outlying Islands. Two types of ferries operate along most routes: standard ferries and the slightly more expensive fast ferries.

MAJOR FERRY COMPANIES IN HONG KONG

There are other ferries between different points around Hong Kong — see full ferry details here .

Appreciate Hong Kong’s world-renowned Victoria Harbour and its stunning skyline in a unique way — by riding a water taxi! Hong Kong Water Taxi is the officially approved water tourism route of the harbour, passing by famous attractions such as the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, the International Financial Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront Promenade, the Avenue of Stars, the West Kowloon Cultural District and more. With a capacity of 170 passengers, Hong Kong Water Taxi offers both air-conditioned viewing cabin and spacious open decks.  More details here .

Octopus Card

Octopus — your essential travel card in Hong Kong

An Octopus digital or physical travel card is an essential purchase in Hong Kong. It’s a smart payment tool that allows you to pay cash-free for all major public transport services, as well as dining, entertainment, shopping and more.

There are two types of Octopus for visitors:

  • Mobile Octopus : simply download the Octopus App for Tourists to instantly add Octopus to your iPhone or Huawei mobile phone. Check your balance and top up without queuing with your credit or debit card anytime, anywhere on your phone. There is a refundable deposit of HK$50 for Mobile Octopus. When you no longer need the Mobile Octopus, you can easily apply for a refund of the deposit and remaining value through the Octopus App for Tourists.
  • Tourist Octopus : a physical travel card, available from HK$39 without any deposit. It boasts an iconic Hong Kong design that makes it an ideal souvenir, which can be reused when you come back to Hong Kong in the future. There are many ways to get a Tourist Octopus after you arrive in Hong Kong; click here to find out how according to your mode of travel, or you can get one at the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s Kowloon Visitor Centre  at the Star Ferry Concourse in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Getting Around Hong Kong: Guide to Public Transportation

How to Ride the MTR

  • Tips for Getting Around

Getting around Hong Kong is easy: routes that aren’t already covered by the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) can be reached by bus, minibus, tram, or taxi. And as payments for most of these can be covered by the contactless, prepaid Octopus Card , you don’t have to worry about exact change too much, either!

The MTR is Hong Kong's subway system. Its eleven lines and 98 stations cover all of Hong Kong’s major districts and areas, venturing beyond Hong Kong Island into Kowloon and the New Territories, all the way to the border with Shenzhen in Mainland China .

Fares and Rates

Tourists riding the MTR, bus, tram, and Star Ferry can buy the versatile Octopus Card to pay for their rides. Alternatively, they might also purchase a single journey ticket or a tourist day pass (valid only for one day). Tourists staying more than a day in Hong Kong should get an Octopus Card to maximize their transport bang-for-the-buck.

The MTR fare starts from HK$3.5 (adult) and increases along with the distance traveled to one’s final destination. Causeway Bay to Hong Kong Disneyland , for instance, will require two transfers and cost HK$27 per trip. Up-to-date information on MTR fares can be found on the MTR website .

Octopus cards and tourist day passes can be purchased at the airport, at automated vending machines at each station, and through most convenience stores around Hong Kong. Updated information on Octopus Card purchases can be found here .

Each card is generally sold for HK$150, with HK$100 useable stored value. It can be used like any contactless card—just touch the card on the turnstile pad to get in and out.

Passengers on the MTR can travel all throughout the territory except for the Outlying Islands. Specialized lines diverge from the main network to head to Hong Kong Disneyland and Hong Kong International Airport. (Riding the Airport Express into town is just about the fastest way to get there or back.) Two stops even straddle the boundary with Shenzhen in the Mainland, at the East Rail line’s Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Stations.

Hours of Operation

Trains on all lines start between 5:30 a.m. to 6:10 a.m., and stop between 12:50 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. MTR trains run at a feverish frequency, with headway (frequency between trains) between two to three minutes, slightly less later at night.

Accessibility Concerns

The majority of MTR stations are equipped for special needs passengers or are being upgraded for that purpose. About 95 percent of stations in the network have elevators connecting the street level entrance to the concourse level. Every station has at least one wide gate to accommodate wheelchair users, and all trains set aside a multipurpose space suitable for wheelchairs. Certain stations have designated accessible toilets for special needs.

Online Resources

Use the trip planner on the official MTR website to plan your trips, find out the cost, and read up on real time updates that might affect your ride. Download the Mobile app  to plan your trip on the fly, using your smartphone.

Riding Hong Kong’s Buses

The Hong Kong bus network is extremely comprehensive, with a dense network of routes covering the whole territory except the Outlying Islands. While most of these routes overlap with the MTR system’s main stops, there are a few sights and areas (such as Hong Kong’s beaches ) that are only reachable via Hong Kong’s bus network.

The buses running around Hong Kong are some of the most modern in the world – all air-conditioned, mostly double-decker, with special needs access standard on all units. Electronic information screens aboard the bus announce the next stop in both Chinese an English.

Passengers pay by tapping the Octopus Card getting in and out, or by paying the exact change into the automated payment box near the driver. Fares range from HK$2.70 to HK$58, depending on the length of the route.

Bus services start from before 6 a.m. and run till 1:00 a.m., with a high frequency between stops. A smaller number of night buses run from midnight to 6 a.m.

To plan your trip, look up Hong Kong Mobility’s unified page for local transportation (including buses); you can also download its mobile apps for Android and Apple .

Riding Hong Kong’s Minibuses

Shorter routes are served by smaller “minibuses” that seat a maximum of 19 passengers. There are two types of minibus, categorized by color. Find out more about both red and green minibuses with our handy minibus guide .

Green minibuses operate on fixed routes and set fares just like their double-decker cousins. Passengers pay using their Octopus Card.

Red minibuses only have a set start and end point, and can take the fastest route to get from A to Z. These are more informal by nature, and don’t get used a lot by tourists.

Riding Hong Kong’s Tramways

Hong Kong’s old-fashioned, open-air trams operate only on a single, eight-mile east-west corridor (plus the Happy Valley loop that detours to  its namesake racecourse ) passing through the city center including Central ,  Wan Chai , and  Causeway Bay , with termini at Shau Kei Wan and Kennedy Town.

The whole tram experience is straight out of the early 20th century. A ride costs only about HK$2.60, with no air-conditioning, wooden bench seating, and a cruising speed of no more than 25 miles per hour. Its six “routes” are actually just overlapping sections of the same line; most itineraries will require you to switch trams in between.

To pay for a ride, get on whenever you want, and swipe your Octopus Card when you disembark.

Riding Hong Kong’s Ferries

From the Central Ferry Pier in Central, you can take several ferries that whisk you across the harbor to Tsim Sha Tsui, or to Hong Kong’s outlying islands.

The Star Ferry is Hong Kong’s classic cross-harbor ferry, operating since 1888, making the 10-minute trip every 6-12 minutes, from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui and vice versa. Passengers can pay using their Octopus Cards.

Ferries also connect Central to the Outlying Islands. Discovery Bay Transportation Services Ltd. travels to Discovery Bay and Lantau Island ; New World First Ferry Services travels to Cheung Chau and Lantau Island (Mui Wo); Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry Ltd. services Lamma Island and Peng Chau ; and Park Island Transport Company Ltd. connects to Ma Wan Island.

Passengers can choose between standard ferries and faster (and pricier) fast ferries.

Tips for Getting Around Hong Kong

  • If you’re only hopping short distances, take a bus instead of traveling on the MTR. The same goes for the tram, if your destination is near the tram route (a near-certainty if you’re in Central or Admiralty).
  • Try to avoid traveling during rush hour, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the mornings and between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at night.
  • MTR stations are clean and safe, but they tend not to have toilets. The MTR website has a handy guide that explains the most accessible toilets adjacent to certain stations.
  • Taxis do not accept Octopus Card payments; better to pay them in cash.
  • Time your Star Ferry crossing with the Symphony of Lights , which takes place every evening at 8 p.m.

What is the "Free Tickets to Hong Kong" campaign, and what does it mean for tourists?

👉 The Hong Kong free tickets will be released in phases, with the first phase having already launched on March 1 st and being open to those already based in Asia. The upcoming free plane ticket releases will be for departures from further afield, such as from Europe or North America. The flights can come from a variety of destinations thanks to the number of airline carriers based in Hong Kong. Free tickets will be issued for round-trips on Cathay Pacific, HK Express, Greater Bay Airlines, and Hong Kong Airlines – meaning travelers from as far as the US or as close as China will be able to profit from this great opportunity.

👉 It should be noted that the flights are not entirely cost-free , as free plane ticket winners will have to pay any taxes and surcharges connected to the ticket . Unfortunately, due to the fluctuation of supply and demand, flight costs between the US and Hong Kong are quite high currently, meaning that the taxes and surcharges (which are calculated in percentages) will be more expensive. It would not be strange, therefore, to win a free ticket to Hong Kong but end up paying USD$450 to cover the taxes and surcharges.

Don't let this charge put you off, however, as despite USD$450 seeming like a hefty sum, it is nothing compared to average flight costs. For example, a return flight between New York and Hong Kong currently averages about USD$1,900, meaning "Hello Hong Kong" is helping your dream trip to Hong Kong become a much stronger possibility 👍 .

👉 These free plane tickets will definitely save you money, so it would be crazy not to apply for them. Simply remember that there is a cost involved.

Solo travelers

👉 A solo traveler who wins one of the 5,000,000 free plane tickets to Hong Kong won't have to worry about co-paying for their partner or friend's flight tickets since it will just be just one person on board. These travelers can explore the stunning natural beauty Hong Kong has to offer, from the many islands and their tropical beaches to beautiful mountain hikes . After that, they can take the famous Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) to Hong Kong Island , where they will easily make friends with the international and local crowd sharing the wonderful Hong Kong nightlife .

When should you apply for free tickets to Hong Kong?

👉 The best course of action would be to register as a Cathay member beforehand so that you will be ready to apply as soon as your tickets are released. Then, after answering a few questions, you'll be added to the waitlist.

👉 To make sure you don't miss your free tickets for the Hong Kong release date, below you'll find a table of the release dates and times according to departure regions.

6. Visit a local street market

Saying Hello to Hong Kong would not be complete without a trip to one of its many street markets, where you can get anything, from food to clothes and souvenirs. One of the must-sees is Temple Street Night Market , where in addition to food and souvenir stalls, you'll also find a lively atmosphere around the karaoke machines. If you are looking for some clothes to fit in, then one of the most famous (and one not to miss!) is the Ladies' Market , where you'll find all sorts of wallet-friendly designer products look-alike at low prices, as well as some peculiar items that may one day become a sensation on social media – as was the case with the fish slippers.

If you want some guidance when visiting these street markets, with local knowledge on how to haggle, where to eat, and what to buy, you can find tour guides to take you on street market private tours (once you've secured your free tickets to Hong Kong).
