Show Me Mizzou. News from the University of Missouri

Ready to launch: MU graduates are well prepared to succeed after college

The recent annual career outcomes survey shows more than 95% of graduating Tigers thrive in various fields within six months after graduation.

April 2, 2024 Contact: Brian Consiglio, 573-882-9144, [email protected]

University of Missouri graduates leave campus fully equipped to forge a path toward career success.

A new career outcomes survey shows that more than 95% of recent MU graduates found employment, continued their education, joined the military or started volunteer service within six months of spring graduation. Prospective students and their families are taking notice, as applications for enrollment are at a record-setting pace, up 14% in 2024 compared to 2023.

In addition, Mizzou is

  • attracting higher-achieving students, as 35% of incoming students ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class in 2023 compared to 29% in 2017.
  • shaping aspiring leaders, as the university was named No. 13 among all public universities on Time magazine’s inaugural Best Colleges for Future Leaders list.
  • providing an affordable education, as MU was ranked No. 7 Best Value among all flagship universities by U.S. News & World Report.

“Students at Mizzou learn from world-class faculty, conduct research, enjoy SEC sports and participate in many activities including fraternity and sorority life for a well-rounded education and development," said Mun Choi, president of the University of Missouri. "These impressive career outcome results show that Mizzou prepares students to lead our state and world."

The latest career outcomes survey, conducted in partnership with the National Association of Colleges and Employers, shows that 2,504 employers have hired class of 2023 graduates, ranging from Fortune 100 firms to small business enterprises. Additionally, class of 2023 graduates were accepted into 283 institutions worldwide and reside in 47 states, the District of Columbia and 21 countries worldwide.

“At MU, we aim to support students as they make the transition from college to the workforce, post-grad studies or other pursuits so they can apply what they have learned as they continue to explore their interests,” said Jim Spain, vice provost for undergraduate studies at MU. “Our alumni are changing the world every day, and out of all the benefits of attending college at MU, the one pride point we hear from our students more than any other at graduation is that they feel prepared and equipped for life after college.”

So, what does it mean to be a Mizzou grad? Hear from three class of 2023 alumni.

Emmy-winning journalist visits MU community, honors Holocaust Remembrance Month

April 5, 2024

Amy Simons, Howard Reich and President Choi

Congregation Beth Shalom, Mizzou Hillel and the Missouri School of Journalism recently welcomed Emmy-winning filmmaker, author and journalist Howard Reich for two days of events on and off campus.

Mr. Reich has written six books and produced three documentaries on issues related to the Holocaust, as well as arts and music. He was also a jazz critic at the Chicago Tribune for more than 40 years. Mr. Reich met with Mizzou journalism students and was the main speaker at several gatherings held in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Month.

Amy Simons and Howard Reich during the discussion

On Wednesday, I attended his talk at Congregation Beth Shalom. The conversation was moderated by MU Professor of Journalism Amy Simons. Mr. Reich discussed his books investigating the Holocaust’s impact on his family and the life of his friend, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel. On Thursday, Mr. Reich participated in a screening of his documentary “Prisoner of Her Past,” based on his mother’s experience surviving the Holocaust.

I am grateful to Professor Simons for helping organize these events and to Mr. Reich for sharing his important work with our community.

UArizona appoints Desireé Reed-Francois as director of athletics

Desireé Reed-Francois

Arizona Athletics

Veteran intercollegiate athletics administrator Desireé Reed-Francois has been appointed the University of Arizona's new director of athletics, pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents, President Robert C. Robbins announced today. Reed-Francois currently serves as the director of athletics at the University of Missouri and will begin her tenure in Tucson on March 3.

Members of the University of Arizona community and media are invited to join a formal introduction of Reed-Francois at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Arizona Stadium in the football press room.

"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Desireé to the University of Arizona family, and we could not be more excited about the leadership experience and outstanding credentials she brings," said Robbins. "Respected nationally for her commitment to student-athletes, Desireé has a history of success everywhere she's served and is exactly the right person we need to modernize our athletics operations and usher in an ongoing culture of success in all aspects of Athletics. This is a tremendous win for our university and I cannot wait for her to get started."

The terms of the five-year contract include an annual base salary of $1 million in year one elevating to $1.2 million in year five, with an additional $250,000 annual contribution from the University of Arizona Foundation. Reed-Francois will have the opportunity for additional incentive compensation based on the department's athletic and academic success, as well as retention bonuses after four and five years of employment with the University. Thanks to Wildcat supporters who continue to show their deep commitment to the University and Arizona Athletics, any retention bonus or buyout expenses for Reed-Francois will be fully covered by donor funds. Donor funds have also been secured to cover the full payout costs of the University's previous athletic director.

Reed-Francois brings proven business expertise and financial acumen to the Director of Athletics position. She is an accomplished fundraiser and relationship builder and has transformed two collegiate athletic departments into high-performing, cost-effective operations. Reed-Francois also has deep ties to the University of Arizona, where she earned her juris doctor from the James E. Rogers College of Law in 1997.

Reed-Francois has served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Missouri since 2021, raising the athletics program's profile over the past several years to include a top 10 football program, postseason berths across multiple sports, and enhancements to student-athlete welfare and support. In addition to hiring six head coaches, she has overseen the department's first budget surplus in six years; record-breaking successes in fundraising, including securing the largest gift in Missouri Athletics history of $62 million; five straight semesters of record student-athlete GPAs; attendance growth in football and basketball; the opening of the Stephens Indoor Football Practice Center; significant upgrades to the game-day experience for fans; the growth of the Missouri brand across the state and country; and implementation of innovative Name Image Likeness (NIL) initiatives.

"There are very few institutions that would entice me to leave an SEC athletics department with strong momentum," said Reed-Francois. "The University of Arizona has tremendous potential and is an institution — and an athletics program — on the rise, and I want to be a part of shaping that future. We will provide a world-class student-athlete experience, which includes competing for championships and being among the nation's elite. I am grateful to President Robbins and the Arizona Board of Regents for this incredible opportunity."

Prior to her tenure in Columbia, Reed-Francois served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2017-2021), revitalizing the department. During her time with the Rebels, she completed or implemented more than $70 million in facility upgrades; hired seven head coaches, including three who earned conference Coach of the Year honors early in their tenures; oversaw the completion and opening of a $35 million on-campus football training complex; and successfully negotiated a joint-use agreement with the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders with the opening of the new $2 billion Allegiant Stadium.

Prior to ascending to the director's chair, Reed-Francois served several institutions in leadership roles, including as the Deputy Athletics Director at Virginia Tech, as a Senior Associate Athletics Director at the University of Cincinnati and as the Senior Associate Athletics Director at the University of Tennessee. Additionally, she has worked at Fresno State University, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, the University of California Berkeley and the University of San Francisco. She also has experience at the professional levels, working with the then Oakland Raiders and the National Football League Management Council.

Reed-Francois currently is the Vice Chair of the Lead1 Association Board of Directors and serves on the organization's executive committee, as well as on the boards of Women Leaders in Sports, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches. Reed-Francois recently served as Vice Chair of the NCAA Baseball Selection Committee and formerly was a member of the College Football Playoff Committee's operations committee. In addition, she is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and has been a presenter at NACDA, NACMA, Women Leaders in Sports, and  Sports Business Journal's  annual conventions.

Reed-Francois was a rower at UCLA, where she graduated with a degree in political science before earning her juris doctor from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. She is a member of the State Bar of California and has taught law classes at the University of Tennessee and at Santa Clara University.

She and her husband, Josh Francois, have a son, Jackson, who is currently a sophomore on the men's basketball team at the University of Missouri.

university of missouri college visits

COLUMBIA, Mo. – States’ 4-H International, a prominent provider of international student exchange programs, announced the appointment of Missouri 4-H alumna Shea Fitzgerald as a Young Professional Board Member. Missouri 4-H Program Director Lupita Fabregas also serves on the States’ 4-H International Board.

Dedicated to enhancing world understanding and global citizenship, States’ 4-H International specializes in high-quality 4-H international cultural immersion and exchange programs for 4-H youths, says Joyce Taylor, University of Missouri Extension educational program associate in charge of Missouri 4-H’s exchange program.

Fitzgerald’s appointment reflects the organization's commitment to engaging young individuals in shaping the future of global education and cultural exchange, Taylor said. Fitzgerald brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, including her time on the State 4-H Council as a west central regional representative and her international experiences. She served as a 4-H international delegate to Japan, where she spent a month in Nara discussing cultural differences and learning about agricultural practices. Shea also spent a semester studying agriculture at Perrotis College in Thessaloniki, Greece, during her college days at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where she graduated with a bachelor of science in agribusiness management and marketing.

Fitzgerald currently serves as a grain merchandiser in Enid, Oklahoma, for ADM. Her role involves cross-country merchandise of grain around Oklahoma and Kansas, primarily wheat and corn. She also manages shipments for export, overseeing logistics from trucks to barges or rail cars destined for the Gulf of Mexico for international export. Shea gathers market information on a micro and macro level to make informed decisions on buying and selling grain.

“I am excited to join the Young Professional Board of States’ 4-H International and contribute to its mission of promoting global citizenship among youth,” said Fitzgerald. “I believe that my background in agribusiness and international experiences will allow me to make meaningful contributions to the organization.”

Missouri 4-H has been a partner with States’ 4-H International since 1978. Each year, the organization hosts delegates from other countries and sends youths on international experiences. “These experiences mold a person into a better citizen, create a pride in our heritage and create a warm spot in families around the world,” Taylor said.
