Branding Norway with sustainable tourism

Norway has in recent years taken a range of steps towards building a more sustainable tourism industry and at Innovation Norway we are proud to take part in the United Nations’ 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development as one of its Gold Partners.

‘Norway – powered by nature’ is the message for our tourism brand. It clearly reflects what we aim to achieve, which is sustainability in a long-term perspective. Tourism in Norway provides enriching experiences presenting a unique nature, rich history, local cultures and food experiences. As the main agency supporting the Norwegian tourism sector, Innovation Norway and its subsidiary Visit Norway seek to help develop world-class sustainable solutions for the country’s tourism operators. This approach goes hand in hand with the conservation of nature and culture, which play a vital role for local value creation and development.

The United Nations has for several years ranked Norway as one of the best countries to live in. Recently it was also ranked as having one of the world’s happiest populations, according to the UN’s World Happiness Report 2017. Norway is not only rich in nature and natural resources, but also has high ambitions on reducing its footprints in areas important for future generations. As such, innovation and investments are based on highly commended Norwegian values, including closeness and care for nature, social welfare, inclusiveness, and green growth. This effort to create a sustainable society is also reflected in Norway’s tourism offerings, which introduce guests to a rich specter of soft and hard adventures, culture, food experiences, city life and nature activities.

Destination development is a multitasking activity. It combines planning, development, performance and profiling activities while including a wide range of stakeholders and interests. Together with the tourism industry, Innovation Norway has developed the certification system and development process ‘Sustainable Destination’, assisting local and regional destinations to target sustainability issues and work in a systematic, strategic and operational way. All of this comes with the goal of aiming to achieve increased sustainability in the tourism sector. Through this sustainability certification system the various destinations gather information, involve stakeholders, plan and implement actions, and monitor their own progress. In addition, the branded destinations monitor improvement on a broad specter of areas, helping them prioritize actions and work towards long-term goals.

Destinations already branded as sustainable through Innovation Norway are national pioneers when it comes to running strategic and dedicated local processes, with the goal of achieving increased sustainability. Well-known Norwegian tourist destinations such as Røros, Lærdal, Vega, Geilo, Trysil, Setesdal, Inderøy and Svalbard are on the list. These destinations plan and implement actions, such as enhancing local food and culture, reduce emissions by providing better energy solutions and transport. They also help increase the responsibility for local environmental challenges and engage the local community in tourism activities. An example of the latter is how the destinations organize waste disposal – and waste sorting systems – at places used by tourists. The certification is aligned with international standards for sustainability in tourism.

Sustainability efforts are often fragmented and inconsistent. Businesses and destinations are therefore in need of relevant tools and information to manage sustainable tourism. To assist the industry take actions towards sustainability, Innovation Norway showcases all tourism enterprises and products under the Green Travel section of VisitNorway.com. Green Travel provides easy navigation to important certifications for tourism-related businesses such as Ecotourism Norway or the Nordic Swan and helps simplify the search for greener solutions for potential customers.

Innovation Norway is committed to supporting all industries in building a greener future, actively encouraging the use green technology, using digitalization as a mean to better planning and developing sustainable business models. Innovation Norway will continue to support the Sustainable Development Goals and help to deliver solutions needed to achieve them. This includes supporting a tourism sector that provides sustainable solutions for people, business and the environment.

The ‘Norway-logo’ is a part of ‘Brand Norway’ , an international branding platform developed by Innovation Norway. Brand Norway’s mission is to provide tools and templates that simplify and professionalise the production process when reaching out to relevant stakeholders. One of these templates is the standard logo – ‘Norway’. Its purpose is to gather our international profiles under one name. Combined use provides a stronger sender identity, making us more visible and memorable.

  • The Norway profile should only be used towards international target groups and when we advertise with support from other organisations (regardless of type).
  • It should not be used with internal funds or towards national target groups.

About the logo

  • The logo is available in two variants: Black or white text. The flag must always be in colour.
  • The logo is available in the UN language versions but can be produced in several variants on request to [email protected]
  • The logo has no frame or background
  • A small white frame can be added to the flag if the design makes the red colour disappear or it loses visibility.

As plans to reopen tourism in Europe start to take shape, Visit Norway, with inputs from the Norwegian travel industry, presented a new, ambitious national tourism strategy in Oslo this week.

The strategy was commissioned by the Norwegian government in January 2020, and it has now been handed over to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Iselin Nybø.

Visit Norway and the Norwegian travel industry used the forced break following the restrictions of the pandemic to work on rebuilding the industry in a better, more sustainable way, focusing on being part of the solution to the climate crisis.

One of the main initiatives in the national tourism strategy is the industry’s commitment to a 50% reduction of its climate emissions by 2030 (based on 2019 levels), and in reducing annual transport emissions by 10%. This does not affect the country’s growth ambitions for tourism neither in export income nor in employment rates.

Visit Northern Norway

Northern Norway – magnificent nature and vibrant culture

Enjoy the Northern Lights, colorful sky and epic scenery. Experience the arctic wildlife, coastal culture and sami culture. Have joyful moments and fun in the snow. Everything under our limitless sky.

“Winter is not always the coldest time in the North, but for sure the coolest.” The visitors say

Where do you want to go?

Bodø – your gateway to the most refreshing and beautiful coastline, what do you want to see and do.

Safer ski touring?

Where do you want to sleep and eat?

Northern Norway – by the taste buds

Northern Norwegian cuisine is rustic, with simple, strong tastes. The riches of the sea are reflected on your plate. More surprising are maybe the intense flavours of veg and soft fruit grown in Northern Norwegian agriculture. Add wild berries and some surprises for the sweet tooth, and your tastebuds will be amused.

Waffles make Northern Norway happy

The food is half the journey, vesterålen are the tasty islands, restaurants in tromsø serve up the tastes of the arctic, møsbrøm flatbread is a staple in salten, travel by your palate around harstad, northern norway is the best place to see the northern lights, where do you see the northern lights.

Where are the best places to see the Northern Lights? Depends on you, your mood and the way you like to do things.

Kristoffer went hunting for the Northern Lights in Senja

The lyngenfjord is the northern lights fjord, go to the north cape to see the northern lights at the end of the world, roam the helgeland archipelago for a different northern lights holiday, jann finds northern lights in lofoten behind the next mountain, jens and marius catch the northern lights in vesterålen, is it really daylight 24/7, stay up late and watch the midnight sun.

For weeks and months, the sun doesn’t set in Northern Norway. Here are some tips for you to find those special places to have those special midnight sun moments.

Go to Lofoten’s wild side for the Midnight Sun

Vardø gets the midnight sun before the rest of us, the midnight sun is bodø’s coat of arms, the midnight sun in narvik fills you with energy, in vesterålen, you see the midnight sun over the atlantic, how to see the midnight sun in tromsø, when to go and how to get the best holiday, nordlandsruta – the longest trekking trail in norway, how to travel and plan your trip, where should you drive this spring and summer.

Northern Norway was made for individual exploration by car. There is something new around every corner; scenic beauty and picturesque villages. No less than six Norwegian Scenic Routes are found, and we can also strongly recommend quite a few others. Here are some suggestions.

The Norwegian Scenic Route in Helgeland is a journey across the islands in the west and along ice capped mountains to the east

See the midnight sun, whales and imposing landscapes during your journey along the norwegian scenic route on andøya, the norwegian scenic route winds around senja’s outer coast, the norwegian scenic route to havøysund takes you from birch forests to the open ocean, the norwegian scenic route in varanger shines with cultural gems and storm carved nature, the norwegian scenic route in lofoten is an island hopping adventure through a towering mountain chain, travel like the locals.

Ireland, Spain, Norway moving closer to recognising a Palestinian state

Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez says declarations on Palestine will be made “when the conditions are appropriate”.

spain

Ireland and Norway are both moving closer to recognising Palestinian statehood, leaders of the two countries expressed separately after meetings with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who also champions the move.

Ireland wants to recognise Palestine soon , but in a coordinated action with Spain and more European nations, the country’s Prime Minister Simon Harris said after meeting Sanchez in Dublin on Friday.

Are more european nations finally moving to recognise palestine statehood, red cross: do not normalise what is happening in gaza, several countries issue travel warnings over israel-iran tensions.

Earlier in the day, Sanchez travelled to Oslo, where Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said his country also “stands ready” to recognise Palestine together with “like-minded countries”.

Sanchez said Spain wants to recognise Palestine “as soon as possible”, leveraging the move as a way to gain momentum for a definitive peace process.

The current efforts come as the mounting deaths, starvation and infrastructure damage in the besieged Gaza Strip due to Israel’s war have resulted in growing international criticism.

Within Europe, the concerns about Israel’s war on Gaza have also led to shifting positions – including more nations considering the possibility of recognising Palestine.

Last month, Spain and Ireland, long champions of Palestinian rights, announced alongside Malta and Slovenia that they would jointly work towards the recognition of a Palestinian state. They said they were “ready to recognise Palestine” in a move that would happen when “the circumstances are right”.

On Friday, after meeting Sanchez, Harris said, “Let me this evening say our assessment is that that point is coming much closer and we would like to move together in doing so.”

“The people of Palestine have long sought the dignity of their own country and sovereignty –  a home that like Ireland and Spain can take its place amongst the nations of the Earth.”

Sanchez said that willing countries would make their declarations “when the conditions are appropriate” and that they would support the new Palestinian state becoming “a full member of the United Nations”.

The Spanish leader has repeatedly angered Israel with his outspoken comments since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, while Harris has already drawn a rebuke from the Israeli government this week.

Israel told the four European Union countries that committed to moving towards Palestinian recognition that their initiative would amount to a “prize for terrorism” that would reduce the chances of a negotiated resolution to the generations-old conflict.

Norway ‘stands ready’

“Norway stands ready to recognise the state of Palestine,” Norwegian Prime Minister Store, whose country is a part of the Schengen zone but not the EU, told a joint news conference with Sanchez earlier on Friday.

“We have not set a firm timetable,” he added, saying a decision on Palestine’s recognition would need to be taken in close coordination with “like-minded countries”.

In November, Norway’s parliament adopted a government proposal for the country to be prepared to recognise an independent Palestinian state.

Norway also hosted Israeli-Palestinian peace talks at the beginning of the 1990s, which led to the Oslo Accords.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed more than 33,600 Palestinians and injured more than 76,000 others since October 7. A Hamas attack on southern Israel before the war killed about 1,100 people there.

In all, 139 out of 193 UN member states recognise Palestine as a state.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
