OUR REVIEWS

What our guests think about our camp, tours and guides!

Abdul was an extremely fun and entertaining guide for us. If you want to have exhilarating fun in a jeep, please ask for Abdul! Super friendly, understanding, helpful, funny, and best of all - an amazing driver. Everything about this 2 day tour package was magnificent. From the jeep tour itself, to the very comfy tent and amenities, to the extremely tasty and filling dinner, and of course the after party to the dinner!

Sit back and have shisha and authentic tea with the hosts and go stargazing in the one of best areas in the world - the dessert of Wadi Rum. If you are hesitant about this, don’t worry at all and have a fun and relaxing time.

Abdul and the family were amazing to us. They were always looking that nothing was missing too us. Food was delicious and abundant. Camp has everything you need, and manager and staff are always checking if you need anything and make the stay easy. The jeep tour was great as well, the driver /guide was helpful, fun, and adaotative to the time we wanted to spend on each place. Also he cooked a great meal for lunch. Then we slept on a cave, and again, the experience is amazing, and we were provided of enough food, blankets and everything for us. Overall amazing experience, we enjoyed the desert and local people and food.

Astounding views and a great tour guide with an amazing sense of humor. Rushing through the dunes in the back of the pickup was a brand new experience. The guide, Abdul, showed us some of the places with the best views and even took our pictures. You can also expect some great advice about cliffs and life in general from him, as well as a quick guide on how to hunt mountain goats. We could also taste a bit of Bedouin life by gathering wood for a campfire and then drinking Bedouin tea while watching the sunset. Would 100% recommend.

BEST CONSTELLATIONS TO FIND EACH MONTH

January – february – march – april – may – june – july – august – september – october – november – december, circumpolar (year around) – ursa major – cassiopeia – ursa minor – draco – cepheus, winter – pegasus – pisces – aries – auriga – taurus – orion – canis major   – canis minor – gemini – lynx – cancer – leo – winter hexagon, summer – virgo – libra – scorpius – bootes – hercules – lyra – ophiuchus – sagittarius – aquila – cygnus – capricornus – aquarius, understanding the stars.

Navigation by the stars was most relevant to explorers particularly those by sea. It is a skill that is becoming lost with the advancement of technology. Fortunately it remains enjoyable to be able to identify constellations. Bedouins of the past intimately knew the land and did not require markers to navigate by night. However they still maintained vast knowledge that they used to track seasonal changes and were competent at using the stars for coordinal points. Through the advent of lighting and stimulation evening activities have drastically changed over the past decades.

Wadi Rum has a number of factors that make one of the best locations in the world for stargazing.

  • Low population density limiting light pollution
  • Predominantly clear skies
  • Low latitudes with both significant nighttime hours and increased range
  • Altitude above 1000m

It is beneficial to have some bearings to aid you in which areas of the sky to look. For reference the direction through the valley towards the village is north. The camp has minimal light pollution and is a good open area, moving up to a higher vantage above the camp increases visibility to the east and west. Khor al Ajram is a good open location for stargazing although it is negatively impacted by light pollution. Open areas south of Um Mugur offer ideal plains without artificial light.

Most important factors to ensure no light polution:

Light pollution: due to the light pollution caused by urban centres you should plan to be at least 5km from Wadi Rum village, ideally obstructed by one of the mountains. You would need to be even further from At Diseh which generates significantly more light. When in the area you will have a sense for the light pollution as you will observe it on the horizon if it is impacting you. Similarly if there are other artificial light sources around you they will impact your naked eye light sensitivity. Plan ahead and be aware of the location of your accommodation.

Moon phase: if you are specifically visiting Wadi Rum for stargazing make yourself aware of the lunar phases and ensure that you will have opportunities without significant moonlight obscuring your visibility. The full moon in Wadi Rum is its own experience as it lights up the sandstone cliffs and provides significant nighttime visibility without any artificial light. However it is not conducive to locating stars or stellar constellations.

Brightness and distance of stars

Apparent magnitude of stars.

Star brightness is scaled in magnitude. Each point of magnitude increase references 2.5 times reduction in brightness. The zero reference point is the star Vega of the Lyra constellation.

The Sun has a magnitude of -27

The Moon has a magnitude of -13

that means that the sun is 2.5^14 times brighter than the moon = 370,000+ multiples

Venus (third brightest natural light source) -4.6

Sirius (brightest star) -1.4

Naked eye limit (in urban area) +3

Naked eye limit (dark sky) +6

Binoculars +9.5

Hubble telescope +30

Other planets: (they all range due to the significant variance in location in our night sky – approximate mean values given)

Jupiter -2 / Mars, Mercury & Saturn 0 / Uranus 6 / Neptune 8 / Pluto 14

As your eye can see 3 magnitudes dimmer (or over 15 times dimmer) stars in dark skies will be able to see significantly more stars. As -5 points of magnitude is equal to 100 multiples of brightness, visitors to Wadi Rum using binoculars will be able to see stars over 100 times dimmer than they will be able to see in their home towns.

The number of stars visible at each magnitude is

0 ~ 4 stars (Vega is the 5th brightest star with adjusted value at 0.03)

1 ~ 15 stars

2 ~ 48 stars

3 ~ 171 stars

4 ~ 513 stars

5 ~ 1602 stars

6 ~ 4800 stars

naked eye limit ~ 9100 stars

7 ~ 14000 stars

the Hubble telescope = several billions

For this reason when star gazing it is important not to expose your eyes to artificial light. Your visibility will be significantly reduced for several minutes if you view a phone screen, look at headlights or sit near an open flame. You looking at the dimmed screen on your phone will effect your eyes sensitivity and eliminate visibility of 90% of stars. For the best experience it is best to sit in complete darkness for several minutes and allow your eyes to adjust and then avoid artificial light sources that would counteract that.

Why is magnitude measured from Vega?

Vega is an important star for a number of reasons.

  • It appears as the brightest star in the in northern hemisphere summer months
  • It is directly over head for much of the year in the northern hemisphere middle latitudes making it easy to identify
  • It was the north star around 12,000BC and therefore had great significance to ancestral people who relied heavily on the stars for navigation
  • It is relatively close to us at 25 light years

With most astronomical research historically taking place in the northern hemisphere middle latitudes it became a major focus and was used to test many advancements in astronomy theories. It was also used as a reference point not only for apparent brightness but also colour spectrum of stars.

How far away are the stars?

Many star gazing applications allow you to hover over stars and get basic information including their distance from earth. However quantifying these staggering numbers is difficult. Something that puts it into perspective is yourself.

Depending on your age – light sources you can see at any given time that are younger than you (assuming perfect conditions and zero light pollution)

30yo – 10-20

40yo – 20-30

50yo – 30-40

There are a total of 133 visible stars within 50 light years of earth. The majority of these are very faint to the naked eye with around half above magnitude 5. From where ever you stand on the planet, earth itself is obscuring at least half of the space around you. This means that even with perfect conditions at most a quarter of these stars would be visible to you.

The Circumpolar Northern Sky

In the northern hemisphere the primary navigational reference star is Polaris, better known as the north star. The north star is the star which all other stars appear to revolve around. The northern star is not particularly bright and is easier identified from other ‘pointers’. Within the northern hemisphere the northern star is visible throughout the year. Surrounding the north star are the circumpolar stars. The higher your latitude the more circumpolar stars are visible throughout the year. The trade off being that the lower your latitude the more seasonal stars will be visible from your location. Fewer total stars and constellations are visible from higher latitudes over the course of the year.

Nevertheless the circumpolar stars remain important in stargazing as they are always able to be identified on a clear night. Other constellations require a seasonal awareness of when they will be visible in the southern skies.

How to locate the North Star?

As the north star can seem faint, it is easiest to identify through some of the circumpolar asterisms and constellations. Circumpolar references those elements that visually revolve around the polar north. These markers maintain the same relative position to the north star and become useful identifiers. The circumpolar stars never move below the horizon and can be identified at any time provided there is sufficient relative darkness.

We have added the names of important stars within constellations and any guests with stargazing apps will be able to use the star names to validate the constellations as they identify them. Remember not to check your phone while you are seaching for stars as it will effect your eyes sensitivy to light.

What is an asterism?

A collection of recognisable stars that are not a constellation or form a part of a constellation are known as an asterism. Popular asterisms are the handle of the big dipper, the summer triangle and Orion’s belt

Circumpolar constellations

Each asterism, constellation and reference star is important in locating additional less prominent constellations. In this sense it is meaningful to form the habit of starting with easily identifiable reference stars and identify subsequent constellations from there.

Step 1: The Big Dipper (The Saucepan)

The Big Dipper (also known as the plough or the saucepan) is part of the Ursa Major or Big Bear constellation. It is easy to locate as a circumpolar asterism with all 7 stars in the formation with apparent magnitudes below 3.3. The 3 stars of the handle Alkaid, Mizar and Alioth are easy to identify as 3 bright stars in a line in the north sky. Once you have identified the handle the pan is simple to identify, with the 4 stars of Megrez, Phecda, Merak, Dubhe. The two stars furthest from the handle form a straight line to Polaris. To locate the north star move 5 times the distance between the 2 stars upward from the saucepan.

You may notice that many stars have Arabic names, this is the legacy of the great Arabic astronomers of the middle ages who made significant advancements in the field.

Step 2: Cassiopeia (The Queen)

Cassiopeia is the second reference marker. It is another asterism that forms part of the Cassiopeia constellation. Cassiopeia is the constellation that represents the seated queen. Cassiopeia is a 5 star formation in the shape of a W, including Schedar, Caph, Gamma Cassiopeia, Ruchbah, Segin. Each of these stars has an apparent magnitude of below 3.3 and is easy to locate in the north sky. Cassiopeia and the Big Dipper appear on opposite sides of Polaris. From the W formation in Cassiopeia move from the central star 2/5 of the distance towards the Big Dipper to find Polaris. Although other minor stars form part of this constellation, they do not make the figure easier to visualise.

Step 3: Polaris (The North Star) and True North

From Polaris (the north star) if you draw a direct line down to the horizon this will determine due north. From here you have your co-ordinal points and can determine where to find other constellations.

Step 4: Ursa Major (The Big Bear)

The Big Dipper forms the tail and the back half of the torso of the big bear. The handle of the saucepan is the tail and the pan forms half of the torso. The 7 stars of the big dipper are brighter than any other stars in the constellation. The nose and feet of the big bear although not as bright as the Big Dipper stars are still prominent in the night sky.

The back legs are long and extend down from the star at the base of the pan closest to the handle (Phecda). The front half of the torso extends out from the pan and has a pointed tip of the nose (Muscida). The front legs extend down and the two front feet are marked by clear stars in close proximity to each other (Talitha).

Step 5: Ursa Minor (The Small Bear)

The north star (Polaris) forms the end of the handle of the smaller bear or saucepan. It also has 7 stars with 3 forming the handle and 4 forming the pot. Unlike Ursa Major, the small bear is a much simpler shape and is only represented by the 7 stars.

Step 6: Draco (The Dragon)

Draco is the dragon constellation. The tail of the dragon runs between Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. The head of the serpent is directly below the pan of the Ursa Minor approximately double the distance of Polaris at the end of the handle in the perpendicular direction. Thuban is the head of the serpent and is a significant as it was the north star 4000 years ago. The early pyramids in Egypt point towards Thuban. The constellation has 14 main stars, with 4 forming the head and 10 forming the tail of the dragon. From the head the tail heads towards Polaris before bending back upon itself and curving around Ursa Minor towards Ursa Major.

Step 7: Cepheus (The King)

Cepheus is a constellation that is often simplified as being a simple house (triangle on top of a square). It is also referenced as being a kings crown although it is more identifiable as a bishops head dress (mitre). Cepheus is the king constellation detailed by Ptolemy. Cepheus is directly alongside the queen constellation of Cassiopeia. Midway between Draco and Cassiopeia. Another reference is that the pointed top of the house is half the distance past the North star from the Big Dipper.

The full constellation of Cepheus also includes some additional stars that form the brim of the hat or balconies of the house. The brightest stars in Cepheus from the wall of the house farthest from Cassiopeia. The stars of Alderamin, Alfirk & Alkidr are the 3 brightest forming the wall and balcony facing Draco.

Identifying constellations

There are 88 recognised constellations, expanded on the list of 48 published by 2 nd century greek astronomer Ptolemy. You have already identified 5 circumpolar constellations with Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Cassiopeia, Draco and Cepheus. Of the seasonal constellations the best known are the zodiacs which mark the movement of the sun.

The Zodiac constellations

The Zodiac constellations are considered important because they follow the earths orbit of the sun. However it is important to understand that they also follow the rotation of the earth. Therefore at any moment only a portion of the zodiac constellations are visible. It is also important to be aware that the sun passes through constellations around 1 month later than the official zodiac dates as minor shifts in the axis of the earth over the past few millennia have altered the perspective from earth. Forgiving the minor shift in alignment the Zodiac in ancient Greek meaning cycle of animals follows the path of the sun through the stellar constellations. As such during the month of the relevant zodiac sign you are not able to see that zodiac constellation.

In any given Zodiac month you will be able to see the opposite zodiac in the night sky and its two neighbouring constellations. Given modern day constellations are out of alignment, cycles are currently approximately 1 month away from the official zodiac dates.

The Zodiac signs that represent each month and what to look for

Capricorn – January – look for: Taurus, Gemini & Cancer

Aquarius – February – look for: Gemini, Cancer & Leo

Pisces – March – look for: Cancer, Leo & Virgo

Aries – April – look for: Leo, Virgo & Libra

Taurus – May – look for: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio +Ophiuchus

Gemini – June – look for: Libra, Scorpio & Sagittarius + Ophiuchus

Cancer – July – look for: Scorpio, Sagittarius & Capricorn + Ophiuchus

Leo – August – look for: Sagittarius, Capricorn & Aquarius

Virgo – September – look for: Capricorn, Aquarius & Pisces

Libra – October – look for: Aquarius, Pisces & Aries

Scorpio – November – look for: Pisces, Aries & Taurus

Sagittarius – December – look for: Aries, Taurus & Gemini

You should also be able to see the zodiac prior early in the night and the zodiac following early in the morning.

As the most western constellations will be first to set it is possible to view the constellations early in the evening. This is particularly effective if there is a constellation that will set early that you are interested to see. You can then return several hours later in the evening to see that the constellations have shifted and new stars are available in the eastern sky.

What is Ophiuchus?

As different cultures had slightly different reference points for their constellations there was an attempt to form an international standard for constellations which led to the establishment of the 88 universal constellations. Zodiac constellations differ from Zodiac signs. The sign represents the serpent handler and was one of the constellations initially outlined by Ptolemy in the 2 nd century. It is the 13 th constellation that the sun passes through and is located between Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Common questions about stargazing

How to locate the milky way.

The core of the milky way is most visible in summer months from March to October. In March you will see the milky way above the eastern horizon before sunrise. It will gradually rise earlier and appear further west in the sky. The last opportunities to see the milky way core is in October when it will appear above the western horizon before sunrise. The milky way appears between Scorpio and Sagittarius which are identified in the summer constellations .

Why do stars twinkle?

The light from stars is travelling huge distances, over those distances that light is being effected by the atmospheres of the objects between. Although planets can also twinkle in specific conditions as they are significantly closer they often appear as a solid light.

How do I know if it is a planet?

Planets are significantly closer than stars and they are reflecting the light of the sun similarly to the moon. As such they do not twinkle like stars do – this is the easiest identifier for amateur stargazers. The colour of the light is also an indicator, particularly if you have some knowledge of the expected location of the planet. Mercury = yellow, Venus = very bright & yellow, Mars = red, Saturn = white, Jupiter = bright & white. However planets are not always easy to locate as their location in the night sky is rapidly changing. To identify planets it is ideal to research their locations in the sky in advance.

How do I know if it is a satellite?

Satellites move across the sky slowly, they are similarly reflecting the light of the sun and at times can suddenly disappear if they are obscured by earth. You will notice them moving at a constant speed and in a straight line across the sky.

What are shooting star?

Shooting stars are not in fact shooting stars at all. They are small pieces of debris that are incinerating as they come in contact with the earths atmosphere.

What other deep-sky objects can I see with the naked eye?

Nebula are the main deep-sky objects amateur stargazers search for outside of the planets, stars and constellations. The most well known is Orion’s Nebula, historically known as the great Nebula, this cluster of light can be found directly below Orion’s belt.

Major meteor shower forecasts

Major meteor activity occurs several times every year, they are normally associated with major comets that are passing. Several factors determine the level of activity including the fullness of the moon. If you would like to enjoy a meteor shower in the desert skies it is best to refer to a reputable meteor forecasting websites such as astronomer or seasky .

Stargazing in Wadi Rum: Exploring the Desert Night Sky

Milky way with the starry night background over the dessert land, Wadi Rum, Jordan

While an extremely well-known UNESCO World Heritage site in the Middle East, one of the lesser-known aspects of Wadi Rum is its exceptional night sky. If you’ve got an upcoming trip to Jordan planned, checking out these celestial wonders should be high up on your travel itinerary. Here’s everything you need to know about the world of stargazing in Wadi Rum.

Wadi Rum – The Perfect Stargazing Destination

A trek in Wadi Rum is included in most Jordan tours , but most people don’t know there’s more to this area than its unique geological formations. With a low population density to limit light pollution and an altitude above 1000m, this spot is also an ideal location for stargazing.

Did you know that Wadi Rum has been designated an International Dark Sky Reserve? This means that the super dark skies make it possible to see stars that are over 100 times dimmer than in your home town. In other words, Wadi Rum is the perfect location for travellers to gaze longingly at celestial patterns overhead.

Bedouin Skylore

The Bedouin people are a group of nomadic Arabic people who have historically lived in this part of Jordan. For the Bedu, stargazing has always been a large part of their culture and lifestyle.

Until the twentieth century, the stars were seen as vital to a Bedouin trying to navigate across the desert plains. Just as vital as sailors also traversing the open sea only using the lights above to guide them. The Bedu have also traditionally used the stars to indicate the seasons of the year; regulating the annual activities for raising livestock was dependent just on the Muslim lunar calendar, which is of course, star-based.

Trying your hand at stargazing in this corner of the world is a great way to appreciate these local cultures and really immerse yourself in the traditions of the Bedouin.

Practical Tips for Stargazing in Wadi Rum

If you’re intrigued to know more about the fascinating Bedouin culture of stargazing, there are certain times of the year to visit Wadi Rum to get the most out of this experience. Researching the different lunar phases will ensure you don’t have any moonlight obscuring your visibility.

It’s also important to take the recommended stargazing equipment with you; most good tour companies will provide this equipment for free, whether you’re signing up to spend a night living like a local Bedouin or even going trekking in Wadi Rum .

Last but not least, aiming to be at least 5km from Wadi Rum village will ensure your view isn’t obstructed by one of the nearby mountains.

There are so many reasons to plan a visit to Jordan. But exploring the awe-inspiring Wadi Rum is certainly at the top of this list. If you are lucky enough to be heading that way, make sure not to miss out on this unforgettable stargazing experience.

Want to know what to do in Wadi Rum? Wadi Rum desert (also known as the Valley of the Moon) covers over 183,000 acres of land and lies in the south of Jordan.  It’s one of the biggest tourist attractions of the country and is somewhere every backpacker should have on their bucket list.

The red sands, sandstone rocks and otherworldly landscapes are enough to convince us we’re on another planet.  It’s so similar to the red planet, that it’s been used as a filming location for movies such as The Martian and Star Wars. Being such an area of natural beauty, it was proclaimed as a protected area back in 1997.

Knowing this, there’s no surprise that Wadi Rum is one of the best locations to visit when in Jordan. In this post, you’ll be able to create a bucket list of activities of the best things to do in Wadi Rum (plus how to visit, where to stay and any travel information you might need). So, let’s get started with the best things to do in Wadi Rum Jordan!

What to do in Wadi Rum: A Summary

Your trip to Wadi Rum will be full of adventure. From driving over sand dunes on 4x4s, stargazing, and hiking to spotting petroglyphs (rock carvings) dating back over 12,00 years ago, Wadi Rum is a magical place in Jordan.

To make your stay in Wadi Rum even more special, opportunists have jumped at the chance to build unique bubble tents and domes. They’re strategically placed in the middle of the desert , surrounded by nothing but sand and 4×4 trucks, making your experience feel like you’re visiting another planet. ➡ You can view the best places to stay in Wadi Rum here.

If you’re visiting Wadi Rum for the first time, there are some activities that you won’t want to miss out on; from the 4×4 tours to spotting some of the momentous landmarks. Most hotels and bubble domes will organise these tours for you, and it’s worth checking with your accommodation before you arrive. This will make your visit to Wadi Rum a lot easier.

🏆 TOP CHOICE: UFO Luxotel Camp

The UFO Luxotel camp in Wadi Rum was one of the best unique stays we have ever experienced, and if we were to return to Wadi Rum, we would stay here again! The staff are sweet and kind and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The food is amazing, served in a buffet style for breakfast and lunch, with vegetarian options and Western-style food, as well as local cuisines.

UFO Luxotel has the classic bubble dome rooms, with views overlooking the desert, seemingly in the ‘middle of nowhere’. All rooms come with A/C and wifi, and a large balcony with a hammock.

Top 12 things to do in Wadi Rum

1. explore the wadi rum desert by 4×4.

One of the best things to do in the Wadi Rum desert is to explore by 4×4. Due to the large sand dunes and uneven terrain of the desert, it is not recommended that you use your own car to travel around. Instead, hotels and accommodations put on 4×4 tours for you to see the desert with a knowledgeable and expert guide (who is also usually a Bedouin local).

Most hotels in Wadi Rum offer either a two, three or four-hour tour around the desert. Most start in the afternoon, so you can finish in time to watch the sunset over the dramatic landscapes. These tours are inexpensive but contact your accommodation directly to find out prices.

Due to the sheer size of the desert (it stretches all the way to Saudi Arabia!), it is not recommended to explore by yourself. It’s easy to get lost, and the midday sun is stifling. If you want to visit the landmarks and most historical parts of the desert, book a 4×4 tour!

We stayed at the UFO Luxotel , and they organised all of our tours for us. They were reasonably priced, and had amazing local Bedouin tour guides. We couldn’t recommend them enough! ➡ BOOK YOUR STAY AT THE UFO LUXOTEL NOW!

what to do in Wadi Rum

2. Take a stargazing tour in Wadi Rum at night

Stargazing is another amazing activity to do in Wadi Rum. It is again, inexpensive, but an experience that you’ll always remember. There is little light pollution in Wadi Rum, so you can spot the stars on your own, but talking to a guide and using professional telescopes is an incredible experience. The telescopes used in the tour cost over £50,000, meaning we could see some of the stars, planets and satellites clearer than with the naked eye.

Not only did we learn more about the stars and constellations, but we were able to hold and look at some ancient artefacts found in Wadi Rum. As the desert used to be entirely engulfed by the ocean, we were able to hold a shark’s tooth that was thousands of years old.

Our hotel, the UFO Luxotel , organised our experience, and it took place a few minutes from our bubble domes, meaning we could head straight back to the bar afterwards!

3. Drink tea in a traditional Bedouin camp

The local Bedouin nomads have roamed Jordan’s land for centuries, with the belief that they arrived in the Middle East as early as the 14th Century. When it comes to talking about their country, the desert and their way of life, they’re the best Jordanian tour guides you can find.

As you travel around the desert on your 4×4 tour, you will stop at many local Bedouin camps, and be offered hand-made souvenirs and fresh tea. Many will invite you to sit around the fire, as you listen to the stories of their lives and families. Some may even play music, and invite you to dance. It’s an amazing and eye-opening way to see a snapshot of their way of life.

If you’d like to spend more time with the local Bedouin people, you can stay in a traditional Bedouin camp. You can check out some of the best unique Bedouin camps in Wadi Rum here.

🇯🇴 FUN FACT: Guests to the Bedouin culture can stay in their homes for up to three days without any questions being asked. It is only on the fourth day that the host can ask why they are there, and who they are!

4. Sleep in a unique bubble dome in Wadi Rum

Another incredible and unique thing to do in Wadi Rum is to stay in a bubble dome. Bubble domes and tents in Wadi Rum started popping up after Matt Damon’s Hollywood movie The Martian. They’re a different way to experience the desert, as most have transparent ceilings to watch the stars, and hot tubs on the balcony to soak in the views.

Staying in a bubble dome gives you an ‘outer-worldy’ experience, and from my first-hand experience, it  does  feel like your own little bubble on Mars. If you are visiting Wadi Rum for the first time, we recommend staying for at least 3-4 nights.  If you can only budget for 1-2 nights in a bubble tent, book a special stay for a night, then  move to a cheaper Bedouin tent to explore more of the desert.

We were fortunate enough to have stayed in the UFO Luxotel . It’s one of the most remote bubble hotels, and we did truly feel like we were on another planet. When you book your stay, it’s inclusive of both breakfast and lunch (served buffet style), and you can book as many desert tours as you desire. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one I highly recommend!

➡ You can book your stay at the UFO Luxotel here , or view all bubble domes in Wadi Rum here !

5. Hike through the Wadi Rum desert

Most activities in Wadi Rum are organised with a guide. Whilst you can hike by yourself, I still recommend speaking to your hotel and telling them where you are going before setting off.

Hiking in Wadi Rum is one of the most popular things to do. From climbing gigantic rocks to walking around stone bridges, it’s an incredible experience for any adrenaline junkie. However, it can be dangerous if you do not know where you are going, or don’t have enough water. It’s important to remember that Wadi Rum is a desert . The heat during the day (especially during the summer months) is stifling. Be prepared, carry a map, tell your hotel where you are going, and if you can; hire a guide.

what to do in Wadi Rum

6. Experience either a sunrise or sunset in Wadi Rum

As you can imagine, the sunsets in Wadi Rum are not to be missed. You’ll watch as the sky turns from blue to blood orange, to a deep red and finally an overpowering, blushing pink. It’s one of the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen.

As long as you have an unobstructed view of the sky, you can see the sunset from all over Wadi Rum. However, some people like to hike to some of the higher rocks and stones to watch. Our 4×4 tour run by the UFO Luxotel stopped just before sunset so we could watch it by ourselves from one of the best viewpoints in the desert!

what to do in Wadi Rum

7. Walk in Matt Damon’s footsteps by visiting the filming locations of ‘The Martian’

It’s no secret that the local Bedouins and Jordanians are proud that the successful Matt Damon, Hollywood movie was filmed in the Wadi Rum Desert. The landscapes of Wadi Rum look exactly like the terrain of Mars, and visiting some of the Martian filming locations is a fun experience!

If you have a good tour guide, they will tell you where Matt Damon was when he was filming, and some fun behind-the-scenes facts. I won’t spoil it for you now, but visiting the filming locations is definitely one of the best things to do in Wadi Rum!

8. Admire the Nabataean inscriptions

Another spot in Wadi Rum to add to your list is the thousands of years old petroglyphs made by the Nabateans. An Arab nomad tribe who was first known to be around in the sixth century BC , the Nabateans are the same group of people who built the lost city of Petra. As they were often moving and travelling to the surrounding lands, they created petroglyphs to communicate with those arriving after them.

Admiring the ancient petroglyphs is one of the best things to do in Wadi Rum, and the local Bedouins are glad to tell you more about their history. Just expect the sites to get busy – we had to share our experience here with many other tourists!

9. Learn about the history of Lawrence of Arabia

As you travel around the Wadi Rum desert, you will be able to visit the Lawrence Canyon and Lawrence House, where Lawrence of Arabia supposedly lived. A British Intelligence Officer living in Jordan in the 19th century, he acted as the liaison officer between the British government and the Arab tribes.

10. Walk across the Umm Al Froth rock bridge

At fifteen metres high, the Umm Al Froth rock bridge isn’t for the faint-hearted! Whilst most opt to stay on the ground, you can climb up the rock side to walk across this famous natural structure. Due to the unique rock formations, it is one of the most photographed and visited areas in Wadi Rum.

🇯🇴 FUN FACT: Most local Bedouins are able to safely climb steep rockfaces without any additional support! This is something that is believed to have developed from living in these types of landscapes for centuries. But don’t worry; if you want to climb the rockface today, small carvings and footholds have been made to make it easier for tourists.

what to do in Wadi Rum

11. Visit Mushroom Rock

Another popular rock formation that’s popular to photograph in Wadi Rum! Mushroom Rock is called Mushroom Rock simply because of its strange shape (like a large mushroom, of course). It’s also a great shaded spot to shelter from the desert sun!

what to do in Wadi Rum

12. Ride the Wadi Rum steam train

The Wadi Rum steam train is an original from the Arab Revolt of 1917. It extends all the way to both Saudi Arabia and Syria. Officially named the Hijaz train, you can take a short ride on the Wadi Rum steam train by buying a tourist ticket (don’t worry, you don’t travel to the next country!).

Even if you don’t buy a ticket to ride the steam train, it’s a fun and interesting thing to see. The main station is by the main Wadi Rum entrance, so you can’t miss it.

➡ Don’t forget to pre-book your Wadi Rum accommodation! Bubble tents sell out quickly, so don’t miss out. You can book your stay at the UFO Luxotel here , or view all bubble domes in Wadi Rum here !

Tips for visiting Wadi Rum for the first time

🇯🇴 You will need to have your Jordan Pass stamped at the Visitor Centre before entering Wadi Rum. If you don’t have a Jordan Pass, you will need to pay 5 JD upon entry. ➡ Not sure what a Jordan pass is? Check out my full Jordan pass guide here.

🚶🏼 Whenever possible, use a guide to travel around Wadi Rum . It is unsafe to wander into the desert alone, due to the sheer size, vast open space and heat.

💸 Tipping in Jordan is not expected by encouraged. If someone impresses you on a tour or goes out of their way to help you, tip them! Some employers expect their workers to be given tips by tourists, so they actually pay them a lower wage. You can find out more about tipping in Jordan here.

☀️ Avoid walking around the desert between 11am-3pm, due to the extreme heat. We found the wind to pick up and cool down around 4pm, which was our favourite time to explore.

🚽 There aren’t any toilets on the 4×4 tours, or in the Bedouin camps, you will visit. Nature peeing is the only option (but don’t worry, everyone does it).

What to do in Wadi Rum: FAQs

1) should i ride a camel in wadi rum.

This is a personal preference, but we do not condone any kind of animal tourism. Yes, the photo may look great, but take it from a distance and admire the camel without riding it. It is also not known the kind of treatment the camels are given away from tourists. If possible, avoid any kind of animal tourism when travelling.

2) What is Wadi Rum?

Wadi Rum (translation ‘Valley of the Moon’) is a desert in the southwest of Jordan. It is known for its outer-world-looking rocks and red sands, and covers over 720 square kilometres of land. Wadi Rum was once inhabited by the Nabateans, who left fingerprints and markings that are still evident today. The Nabateans are also known for building the ancient city of Petra , another popular attraction in Jordan.

3) When should I visit Wadi Rum?

The best time to visit Wadi Rum is either in spring (March, April, and May) or autumn (September, October, and November). This is because the temperatures are lower than in summer, so you can have more time exploring during the day.

During the autumn months, the daytime temperatures are perfect for hiking and trekking through the desert. The skies are also clear at night for stargazing and watching the Wadi Rum sunsets.

4) Can you visit Wadi Rum by yourself?

It is not recommended to visit Wadi Rum by yourself. The best option is to book at least one night’s stay and book all activities through your accommodation. This means you are safe when exploring the desert, and are at no risk of getting lost!

We stayed at the UFO Luxotel , and they organised all of our tours for us. They were reasonably priced and had amazing local Bedouin tour guides. We couldn’t recommend them enough! ➡ BOOK YOUR STAY AT THE UFO LUXOTEL NOW!

5) What do people do for a living in Wadi Rum, Jordan?

Most of the local Bedouins live in Wadi Rum Village, which is in the centre of the desert. Currently, tourists do not visit the village on the 4×4 tours. Whether the local is living in the village or in a more remote area of the desert, they often raise cattle, farm, sell goods or work in the tourism industry.

6) Is it worth staying in Wadi Rum?

Yes, it is worth staying in Wadi Rum. There is simply not enough time to explore and enjoy the desert to its fullest in just one day! The stars at night alone with so little light pollution are enough to stay for the night. Most of the accommodations in Wadi Rum are also an experience in themselves worth staying for.

7) Can you drive yourself in the Wadi Rum desert ?

Some of the camps are accessible by your own car, but you will be met by a member of staff and directed to the car park. They’ll carefully lead you over the bumpy dunes and ensure no damage is made to your car! After that, you will need to take a 4×4 tour to explore more of the Wadi Rum desert.

Eid is a friendly host and try to give you a feeling of their culture and kind of living. He also brings me at 6 am in the morning to the camp for reaching the local bus to Aqaba. They offer you also camel and jeep tours through the desert.

Eid and Fatih were wonderful hosts. We had an amazing Jeep tour with a great traditional meal in the desert. The breakfast and dinner were also really good with many options - considering we were in the desert :) We really enjoyed our stay.

They were amazingly helpful in answering my questions even before we met. The tour is beautiful everywhere you look. If you stay the night, make the choice to eat dinner in the cave. It is nice to sleep in nature. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

I love the beautiful swings they have and the nice interior of the main tent. Their food is really nice and it is a good traditional experience. The whole surrounding is just amazing and it is possible to hike around. Really nice staff and they entertained us a lot.

Our host Eid is super nice and cooperative! The location is perfect.

wadi rum stargazing tour

Eid and his hosts were so helpful and hospitable. The food they served was incredible and even more of a treat that we got to watch how it was cooked in its traditional method. The location of this camp is amazing as you are in the middle of the Wadi Rum with the most spectacular views. The cabins themselves are so beautifully decorated with windows that open onto the views. I would highly recommend anyone to stay here. An amazing experience with lovely hosts. Definitely go for the bedroom with a private bathroom.

Super friendly staff. Good location. Food was included in the room rate. Amazingly the food was buffet style, absolutely delicious and plenty (Even encouraged us to go up a 2nd and 3rd time for more food). The tour they arranged for me was great. I would be happy to stay again and recommend this place to others :-)

Excellent location!

The Best Luxury Camps in Wadi Rum

If you are planning a trip to the beautiful country of Jordan , you probably have Wadi Rum on your list of must-visit destinations. Also known as the Valley of the Moon, this area really does look like you’ve left earth and are wandering around on Mars. It’s a vast desert landscape with interesting rock formations jutting up in every direction that’s unlike anywhere else on the planet.

Wadi Rum has been inhabited by different cultures since prehistoric times, which seems quite remarkable given that it is unbearably hot by day and cold at night. You can see the graffiti and rock paintings left by previous inhabitants. The Nabataeans and Bedouins lived in Wadi Rum in tents under the starry night sky, so you should too!

I have been to Jordan once on a solo trip, however didn’t get to experience much at Wadi Rum. I guess these luxury hotels would be a good option for me to come back and explore. This time not alone.

  • Wadi Rum: An Epic Guide To Exploring Its Hidden Treasures

Last Updated on March 13, 2024 by Nicole

One of my favourite days while we were in Jordan, was the day we started with a private tour of Petra and ended late at night with a star gazing show in Wadi Rum desert. This Wadi Rum day trip was mind boggling in a few ways. First, it was a day filled with moment after moment of beautiful scenery. Second, we covered a lot of territory while still feeling like we were soaking up everything that we wanted to see. Third, the day was filled to the brim with absolutely jaw dropping moments like exploring Petra, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World , and then, Wadi Rum, the famous desert of Lawrence of Arabia .

Wadi rum day trip

Our Wadi Rum day trip is not for the traveller who has days to linger in Petra or Wadi Rum. It is for the visitor who only has a few days to tour Jordan and has to make the most of it. That was us. My family of 6 – four children aged 14 – 21 years old – only had 6 nights/6 days in Jordan. Like always, I had a long list of everything that I wanted to do and see. I knew it was a ridiculous list in the time that we had. However, ever stubborn, I filled our itinerary with as much as was reasonable. Was it a mistake? Was it too much? It could be for some. However, for me, our day in Wadi Rum made my list for one of the best days ever.

Wadi Rum  – Morning

We started our day at 7:30 am in Wadi Musa, the town where the ruins of Petra are found. We had a private two hour tour with a local guide who took us to many of the key sites in Petra. Afterwards, we had about an hour to explore Petra on our own. After that, we had to meet our driver for the 2 hour drive to Wadi Rum.

I have already written two blogs about Petra. First, about our UNBELIEVABLE experience exploring Petra the night before with only candle light and the moon guiding us ( Petra By Night: Crucial Tips For A Magical Night ) . Second, about our amazing private half day tour ( Petra Jordan: Why A Half Day Was Enough ). I won’t discuss either of these topics again in this blog except to say that we loved these tours and experiences. If you would like tips about what to do or avoid while exploring Petra , I would recommend reviewing them.

Petra half day tour

Wadi Rum Tour

Just after noon, we left Petra and met our driver to begin our journey from Petra to Wadi Rum. The two hour drive was beautiful. For the first half, we had spectacular views from the side of mountains looking deep into valleys. We passed through small towns and villages and were excited to see the day to day lives of locals. We even picked up coffee, falafel and pita in one tiny village for lunch on the fly. The food was amazing – fresh and warm from the oven. The locals were friendly and as curious about us as we were about them.

As we got closer to Wadi Rum, the land began to flatten . Everywhere we looked, there was red sand. Here and there, enormous red craggy mountains seemingly erupted out of the earth. I was mesmerized by the colour, shape of the sand dunes and mountains that seemed to engulf the landscape.

Before entering Wadi Rum Protected Area, we had to visit the Wadi Rum Visitor Centre. This is a modern building just before the main gates to Wadi Rum where entrance tickets to the protected area must be purchased. It was approximately $7 USD per person.

Wadi Rum Protected Area

Wadi Rum Protected Area is 720 square kilometres of desert wilderness in the south of Jordan. Huge mountains of sandstone and granite dramatically emerge from wide sandy valleys, reaching heights of 1700 metres or more. Narrow canyons and fissures cut deep into the mountains. Many conceal petroglyphs, ancient drawings etched by Bedouins over hundreds of years. Bedouin tribes still live among the mountains of Wadi Rum.

Wadi rum protected area

Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp

From the Visitor Centre, we drove another 20 minutes into Wadi Rum Protected Area to our Bedouin Camp Space Village Luxury Camp .

Wadi Rum has been the back drop for countless films that wish to depict Mars, the red planet. The most recent one was the 2015 movie The Martian , with Matt Damon. Upon arrival at our Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp, I  immediately felt like I had landed in another world.

First off,  all I could see for miles and miles was red sand and mountains. Secondly, it was completely untouched. Apart from our Bedouin camp, I couldn’t see another settlement or other man made building. We were tucked between mountains and dunes. Lastly, I felt like Space Village was intentionally set up to feel like a faraway outpost. There was row upon row of large tents lined up perfectly. Wooden pathways connected them to each other and at the top, we found two very large tents. One contained seats, rugs and tables. Here, we hung out, played cards and had tea. The other one was the dining hall. In between the two, was a fire pit and seats where we huddled once the sun went down.

Wadi rum bedouin camp

Before arriving at Space Village Luxury Camp, we passed a couple of other tented camps which were not as ideally situated as ours. Some were near roads, some lacked privacy, while others seemed to be part of a larger complex with unattractive buses and cars parking nearby. I would not have been happy there.

For accommodation in Space Village Luxury Camp, or other Wadi Rum Bedouin camps , I would recommend using booking.com and the interactive map below to find the best location at the best prices.

The tents in our Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp

We stayed in a standard tent at Space Village and it was lovely. The beds were large, comfortable with huge thick blankets. Each tent had an ensuite bathroom with full plumbing. It was as nice as any modern hotel. Electricity was turned off during the day. Accordingly, it was absolutely sweltering in the tents after 10:00 am. On the flip side, once the sun set, it was freezing. In the evening, each tent had electricity and heat, although the blankets were wonderfully warm. For added luxury, we each received a thick blanket-like robe for our use during our stay.

Wadi Rum Jeep Tour

Once we settled in our Wadi Rum Bedouin camp, we left on our three hour jeep tour. This was an absolutely fantastic and fun way to explore this beautiful part of the world.

Space Village organized two “jeeps” for us and they picked us up from the Bedouin camp. However, first things first, these were not jeeps! They were small pick up trucks, with open flat bed trunks with benches and cushions added. In addition, they were old, run down, with limited suspension. The benches were hard and upright and the cushions were thin.

Wadi rum jeep tours

After catching a glimpse of our vehicles, I was a little concerned about how comfortable we were going to be on our Wadi Rum jeep tour. More worrisome, my husband has a bad back. This was not looking good. However, my fears were mislaid. We split up with three of us in each vehicle. This allowed us to stretch out and find a way to be comfortable. In addition, the actual driving and touring were easy on the body and still very fun and exciting. We drove FAST, but it was largely in straight paths along roads made out of soft sand. There wasn’t any “dune bashing” or crazy amusement park driving.

Wadi rum tour

The Wadi Rum Jeep Tour

We spent the first two hours of our Wadi Rum jeep tour exploring many different parts of the Wadi Rum Protected Area. It was a beautiful and majestic landscape that was completely untouched. We barely saw another vehicle on our Wadi Rum tour as we drove from place to place. When we stopped to look at rock formations, natural springs, petroglyphs or other significant carvings from ancient Bedouin tribes thousands of years old, we did share that space with other people on their own jeep tours. However, except for these moments, we felt very much alone experiencing the desert landscape.

Wadi rum day trip

Unfortunately, our guides did not speak English very well. So, we did not learn a lot about the history of the petroglyphs or rock carvings. Nevertheless, we saw unbelievable ancient carvings and spectacular sites on our Wadi Rum tour, such as Lawrence Spring, Khasali Canyon, Anfishiyeh inscriptions, Lawrence’s House, Small Arch, Um Fruth rock bridge, and the Red Sand Dune. We passed Bedouins on camels, a scene that felt like it could be hundreds of years old, and the occasional Bedouin campsite with children running around. Quite frankly, I’d do it again in a heart beat even without our guides speaking a single word of English. It was just so stunning.

Wadi rum tour

The Sunset at the end of our Wadi Rum Tour

The last hour of our Wadi Rum tour, we stopped for tea at a small market to purchase Bedouin souvenirs. My oldest son couldn’t resist and we not only purchased a traditional scarf, we received a lesson on how to wrap it properly on his head. Then, we headed to a spot not far from our Bedouin camp to watch the sun slowly set. We got out and walked, climbed onto the hood of the engine, and generally goofed around and had  a lot of fun. The sunset was magical and serene. A perfect way to end a perfect our Wadi Rum tour.

Wadi rum tour

Star Gazing in Wadi Rum Protected Area

After dinner, we were collected from our Wadi Rum Bedouin camp and drove 5 minutes to the Rum Sky Star Gazing Adventure . This comprised a large tent with lots of foldable chairs, washrooms, and four enormous telescopes all facing into the night sky.

We spent the first 20 minutes inside watching a video teaching us the basics about the planets, the stars, the Milky Way, among other things. Then, we were led outside to begin looking through the telescopes at the stars. Throughout our time outside, we learnt about the stars, the moon, constellations, legends behind them, and ancient ways to use the night sky for navigation. After an hour, we returned to our camp.

Wadi rum star gazing show

Why star gazing in Wadi Rum Protected Area was great.

I enjoyed our time star gazing in Wadi Rum Protected Area. Without any light pollution, I was amazed to see the number and extent of the starry night above us. I really liked using the enormous telescopes and seeing stars and nebulas closer than I had ever seen before. Our guide from Rum Sky Star Gazing was incredibly knowledgable and enthusiastic about what we were seeing. For anyone with a passion for astronomy or a desire to learn more about the universe in which we live, then this evening would be perfect for you.

Why star gazing in Wadi Rum Protected Area was not great.

It was a long day. We all struggled to keep focused on the stars, the lecture and the storytelling. Most of our time was spent outside and it was pretty cold out. We wrapped ourselves with warm blankets, which was awesome, except that all we wanted to do after that was go to sleep!

Tips And Expectations For A Successful Wadi Rum Tour

Weather and clothing on the wadi rum tour.

  • It is hot in the Wadi Rum Protected Area during the day and very cold after sunset. You need to bring appropriate clothing for the weather.
  • The weather will limit your activities in Wadi Rum Protected Area. During the day, it is too hot to spend time in the tent or too much time in direct sunlight. At night, it is very dark and cold.
  • I would recommend only wearing closed toe flat comfortable shoes at any time during your Wadi Rum tour.  Running shoes would be fine. Hiking boots would be ideal for comfort, warmth at night, and the best way to prevent sand in your shoes.

Accommodation at the Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp

  • There wasn’t any wifi, TV, or other electronic entertainment devices at the Wadi Rum Bedouin camp. In addition, Space Village did not offer any other type of evening entertainment. Make sure you bring a book, cards or something else to occupy you after dinner.
  • The only alcoholic beverage available was beer. There wasn’t any wine or hard alcohol. All drinks, soda pop and beer, were not included in the cost of accommodation. It was expensive.
  • If you stay elsewhere, investigate the site plan of the camp and what is located nearby. One of the nicest parts of our experience at Space Village was the setting. It felt authentic and untouched.

Wadi Rum Jeep Tour

  • On any Wadi Rum jeep tour, be prepared for trucks that are run down and guides that do not speak very good English. You might be lucky to get a nice truck and an English speaking guide, but that it isn’t guaranteed. You do not have control over who or what shows up for your Wadi Rum jeep tour.
  • If you are a group larger than 4 people and tall or on the bigger side, I’d recommend looking into booking two jeeps. It isn’t necessary – we all fit in one vehicle – however it wasn’t as comfortable or enjoyable as it was with two. The cost for each vehicle with driver and guide was $70USD for three hours.
  • During the Wadi Rum jeep tour, we did not have any seatbelts or anything except for the basic benches keeping us in the truck. We had to hold on to stabilize ourselves. I felt safe – there weren’t any obstacles on the road and we drove only on flat surfaces. However,  objectively, it wasn’t safe. If you have young children, you will need to decide whether you would feel comfortable with this.
  • In addition, you should bring a little bit of cash on your Wadi Rum jeep tour. Most likely, you will end up at a small market and may wish to purchase a trinket or two. They do not accept credit cards.

Rum Sky Star Gazing Adventure on your Wadi Rum day trip

  • Tickets cost $25 USD per person, which includes transportation to and from the show unless your camp falls outside a defined area. Then, transportation is extra.
  • Dress warmly. In the event you need a warm blanket, they will provide one.
  • This would not be very interesting for young children. It is not dangerous or requires them to sit still or be quiet. However, there really isn’t a lot for them to do, except to listen to the guide about the night sky and gaze for a few seconds at a time into a telescope.
  • You need to be able to stand and look into telescopes for approximately an hour. Outside chairs were not offered. After the lecture inside, most of your time is spent outside in the Wadi Rum Protected Area moving from one telescope to another.

We loved our Wadi Rum day trip. It couldn’t have started any better than with our Petra half day tour. That was exceptional! Then, we were stunned by the beautiful drive from Petra to Wadi Rum Protected Area. Finally, our time in Wadi Rum  – on the jeep tour, staying in our own Bedouin tents and the Rum Sky Star Gazing show – made this day truly unforgettable. If you need to see it all in a short time, then I’d highly recommend this amazing day in Jordan.

Your pictures are great and it looks like you had a ton of fun! Jordan is on my bucket list – especially Wadi Rum. Hopefully I can visit soon!

Thank you. We had lots of fun and loved the photos as well (which doesn’t happen very often! Lol).

This is one of those areas I had a hard time believing was real at first. Would love to visit here and spend some time at Wadi Rum!

I agree. It seems otherworldly. A must see experience when you get to that part of the world.

This is the exact trip I took a few years ago, starting with Petra and moving on to Wadi Rum, which is gorgeous! I loved the sunset jeep tour, it was breathtaking and staying overnight in the luxury tents was quite an experience! It was the highlight of my trip to Jordan, apart from the visit to Petra, of course.

I think it is a jammed packed day but so worth it. It seemed like a lot to see and do, and it is, but everything is so beautiful and exciting that we never felt overwhelmed. At the same time, it wasn’t too touristy. Just a great time!

What a beautiful and incredible adventure you had!! Your time in the Wadi Rum reminds me a little of our time in the Sahara Desert in Morocco. I can’t believe the Martian was filmed here; I love that film! I remember the soft drinks, alcohol being very expensive too. It’s time for a detox for the short time there lol!

I love the sound of desert safari in Morocco and yes, I think they would be very similar experiences.

What an incredible experience. Petra has always been on my bucket list and now I can add Wadi Rum to the future itinerary. Thank you for sharing. Your tips at the end were very helpful. Some incredible pictures.

Thank you. Petra and Wadi Rum should be on everyone’s bucket list. There are only a few places in this world that go beyond your expectations. These two did!

I had a similar experience at Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan earlier this year. Minus the sand and head gear!

That sounds like my kind of holiday. I’ll have to read about that another time.

Damn, this sound amazing. I have definitely had it on my bucket list to explore not only Petra but the Petroglyphs in Wadi Rum. How cool is the Space Village Campsite, though when I first looked at the pic they looked like coffins so I had a double take. Love that carving you guys found and the whole desert experience but after the Petroglyphs for me, the night star gazing would be the biggest event I would absolutely love to experience…I can only imagine the night sky without the telescopes! This was definitely an amazing bucket list adventure

Lol. I had to go back and look at the photo of the tents… Yes, it kind of does look like coffins. But, thankfully they weren’t and they were very comfortable. It sounds like you will love your time in Wadi Rum desert!

Oh my goodness, that sounds like an incredibly busy day, but it does, in the end, totally worth it. I’ve seen a number of people post about Wadi Rum actually, and it really makes me want to go there!

Your pictures are great and it looks like you had a ton of fun! What an incredible experience. Petra has always been on my bucket list and now I can add Wadi Rum to the future itinerary. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you! I hope that you get to enjoy Petra and Wadi Rum very soon. They are both so beautiful and interesting to explore.

It is lovely trip with wadi rum. I love it. http://www.rockandstorm.com

Wadi Rum, Jordan: 7 Unmissable Things to do

In the heart of Jordan lies the captivating Wadi Rum, a destination that promises adventure and unique natural beauty. Here, a Mars-like desert landscape unfolds before your eyes, beckoning you to explore it. Go on exciting 4×4 adventures between rugged cliffs, admire the rippled sand from above in a hot air balloon, and spend your evenings looking up at the star-filled skies: there are many incredible things to do in Wadi Rum, Jordan .

Things to do in Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum (Valley of the Moon) is a protected UNESCO site that covers an impressive area of over 720 km². Unlike the Sahara in Morocco or the desert in Oman , you’ll find unique rock formations, ancient inscriptions, and Bedouin campsites between the enchanting red dunes. Can you believe that this incredible, Mars-like terrain was once the bottom of the ocean?

Here are all your hotel options in Wadi Rum.

Wadi Rum is one of the most popular stops in Jordan, and you’ll quickly see why so many blockbuster movies (for ex., The Martian, Dune, and Star Wars) were filmed in this incredible location.

Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for camels. You’ll be able to see them throughout the desert, sometimes with their owners. Though they often offer camel rides, we don’t support this and instead recommend admiring them as they are. Read more about wildlife tourism and better alternatives here .

1. Stay in a Dome

Dotted across the vast deserts between the high rocky hills is where you’ll find accommodations straight out of science fiction. These glamping spots are eco-friendly domes designed to blend in with the natural environment and offer a luxurious camping experience in the Jordanian desert.

From stargazing through the glass ceiling to relaxing on a private terrace as you soak up the desert views, spending the night in a desert dome is fun to do in Wadi Rum. Whether it’s a glass bubble or a yurt with a private hot tub, there are many options to choose from.

2. Jeep Tour

Perhaps one of the most popular things to do in Wadi Rum is to drive through the endless sand dunes, narrow canyons, and hidden valleys. Make your way across the vast open space, only stopping to admire ancient rock formations and their inscriptions. You’ll also spot camels roaming through the desert, thousand-year-old Nabatean petroglyphs carved into the rocks, and local Bedouin camps with souvenirs and fresh tea.

Jeep tours are a great way to explore the desert, as it’s the easiest way of getting around. Here, an experienced guide will take you to many iconic photo spots, movie scenes, and hidden gems. For example, the Um Frouth Rock Arch, different canyons, and the Seven Pillars of Wisdom. The last plays a significant role in the story of Lawrence of Arabia, a British officer who led the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during WWI.

Jeep tours can usually be arranged at your campsite and typically last 2 – 6 hours. Ideally, you experience sunset, too, where you can witness the landscape changing colors.

Did you know? The Nabateans were an Arab nomad tribe thought to be around in the 6th century BC. As they moved across the lands, they left behind petroglyphs to communicate with the groups after them. They’re also known as the people who built the lost city of Petra.

3. Go Stargazing

Watch how the dark night sky comes alive with thousands of stars by stargazing in Wadi Rum, one of the best places in the world to do this. With an altitude of over 1000m, clear skies, and very little light pollution due to its remote location, the stars above Wadi Rum shine as bright as ever.

Spread out a blanket on the soft desert sand and gaze up at the stars. This is the perfect moment to decipher constellations and look for falling stars. Many desert camps in Wadi Rum offer guided stargazing experiences led by knowledgeable Bedouin hosts who’ll tell of ancient stories and myths while pointing out celestial wonders. Suddenly, that ‘otherworldly’ feeling just became much stronger!

Alternatively, you can also book an astronomy tour online , where an expert guide teaches you about various planets, nebulas, and constellations.

4. Hot Air Ballooning

If staring at the sand dunes and desert rocks of Wadi Rum on the ground level is already incredible, imagine soaring high above the landscape. A hot air balloon ride gives you a unique perspective of the Martian-like terrain, calmly flowing above the vast expanse of rusty-red desert.

Watch how the stunning rolling sands stretch across the horizon, only broken up by wind-carved sandstone formations. The hot air balloons usually take off around sunrise when the winds are calmer, and a ride is about 1,5 hours. This incredible experience comes with a premium price of around 140 JD (200 USD) per person, but it’s well worth it if it’s a view you’d like to see.

5. Spend a Night in a Desert Camp

One of the best and most unique things to do in Wadi Rum, Jordan , is to spend the night at a traditional desert camp. Experience the true Bedouin lifestyle by savoring the silence of the desert while you huddle around a cozy campfire under a sky full of stars. Our top camp recommendations are:

  • Sand Star Camp ($)
  • Desert Magic Camp ($$)
  • Memories Aicha Luxury Camp ($$$)

These traditional yet comfortable camps offer a glimpse into authentic desert living. Cozy tents in vibrant colors protect the Bedouins from the intense sun rays during the day. At night, soak up the warm hospitality and delicious cuisine of the camp.

Listen to the beautiful songs played after your Zarb dinner before settling into a comfortable bed and watching a starlit spectacle play overhead. In the morning, you’ll wake up to the sounds of the birds that live between the rocks. This immersive desert experience is a must-do on any Jordan itinerary!

Tip: These camps differ from the glass domes and bubble tents perched in the desert and offer a more authentic experience managed by local Bedouins. Depending on the camp you choose, dinner and breakfast are included.

6. Sandboarding

The majestic rolling desert dunes of Wadi Rum make the perfect place to go sandboarding. This is a thrilling activity like no other as you glide down the soft, golden slopes with the wind in your hair and the vast desert before you. Whether it’s your first or hundredth time sliding down the sand, it’s one of the more unique things to do in Wadi Rum.

Sandboarding Wadi Rum

Most sandboard tours can be organized with your Bedouin camp or accommodation and are best planned in the morning before the heat of the day comes in.

Enjoy sandboarding on a tour in Wadi Rum. See availability for your jeep tour here.

7. Have a Traditional Bedouin Dinner

One of the most memorable experiences in Wadi Rum is savoring a traditional Bedouin dinner under the vast desert sky. As the sun sets over the rugged mountains, the camp’s chef will prepare a delicious Zarb dinner, a traditional Bedouin meal. This barbeque usually consists of lamb and chicken, includes some locally grown vegetables, and is cooked in an underground oven.

Watch how the camp leader expertly digs a hole in the desert sand, fills it with hot coals, and places the food into a large pot. They then carefully lower it into the makeshift oven before covering it with sand. This meal takes several hours to cook, resulting in tender and flavorful dishes. The Zarb is typically served with delicious hummus, fragrant rice, a warm flatbread, and salad.

Did you know? Thousands of melons are cultivated in the arid landscapes of Jordan!

After the meal, the night comes alive with the crackling of a campfire, shisha, and stories and songs of your Bedouin hosts. As you sit under a starry desert sky, soak up the warm hospitality of the beautiful and ancient Bedouin culture.

Where to Stay

There are many incredible stays and camps spread across the deserts of Wadi Rum. It’s just about finding the one that works with your budget and travel plans. From stunning desert domes straight out of science fiction to beautiful Bedouin camps or cozy hotels, there’s something for everyone.

If a desert camp is not your thing, you can also stay in Wadi Rum Village , which has a few restaurants, hotels, and hostels. If you want to see the famous arch, make sure to stay in a nearby camp, as many sunset or sunrise jeep tours will only pick you up from accommodations in the vicinity.

How to Get to Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum makes a must-do on any Jordan itinerary, and there are numerous ways to get to the desert. It’s not difficult to reach, as a road goes straight through Wadi Rum, and most camps are just a short bit off-road.

By Car or Private Driver

The most popular ways to get from Amman to Wadi Rum are by car, private driver (or taxi), or an organized tour . Renting a car in Jordan gives you the flexibility to make up your own schedule and allows you to see many of the things to do in Jordan.

We recommend to rent a car in Jordan through Sunny Cars with free cancellation and insurance included. Book your rental car here .

If you’d rather not drive yourself, then a private driver (or taxi) is the second-best option. From Amman, it takes about 4 hours to get to Wadi Rum. From Petra it’s 2 hours, and only 1 hour from Aqaba. Note: Every visitor to Wadi Rum needs to get their Jordan Pass stamped at the Visitor Center or pay 5 JD (7,05 USD) for entry.

Good to know: Many of the camps are easily accessible and don’t require a 4×4 vehicle. If you plan to explore the wide desert sands of Wadi Rum by yourself, always bring a map, compass, water, and food, and inform your camp of your plans. Alternatively, many camps organize jeep tours into the desert.

Top Tips for Visiting Wadi Rum

  • Get a Jordan Pass when traveling through the country, which gives you access to over 40 incredible sites, including the ancient city of Petra and Wadi Rum.
  • Though exploring Wadi Rum by yourself is possible, it’s not recommended. Because of the region’s size, its vast open space, and the heat, it’s safer to travel with a guide instead. You can easily make your way to the Visitor Center or your camp. From there, join an organized tour into the desert. This gives you a chance to get to know more about the Wadi and is less risky.
  • If a guide or host impresses you or helps you, make sure to tip them!

wadi rum stargazing tour

  • Avoid walking around the desert dunes between 11 AM and 3 PM. During this time it can get extremely hot, making it a good time to rest at your camp or go for a swim at your accommodation’s pool. After 4 PM, it cools down again and is perfect to head out to explore.
  • You’ll be out in the open back, so expect a sandy situation for the time you’re in Wadi Rum!
  • Remember that there are no toilets on the 4×4 tours or Bedouin camps. All your business is done in the desert (but don’t worry, as everyone does it!).

Best Time to Visit Wadi Rum

Every season has its benefits in Jordan. However, the best time to visit Jordan is in spring (March-May) or fall (September-November). During this time, the desert temperatures aren’t as high as in the summer, leaving more time to explore during the day.

Nevertheless, it’s possible to visit during the other seasons, too. Just remember that summers can be an uncomfortable time to visit because of the high desert temperatures (40 – 42 °C). If you stay in winter, it can get really cold at night (sometimes as low as 4 °C). Though still a nice time to visit, it requires a bit more preparation.
