Indulge in Serenity: A Day Touring Waterfalls in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

The perfect day for nature and water lovers! Waterfalls are one of the most majestic things you can find in Hacienda Guachipelin, Rincon de la Vieja Guanacaste. Some of them are perfect for a swim, others to take a jump or simply to admire their beauty. Pristine waterfalls, jungle forest, natural hot springs are the main attractions that you will enjoy on this unforgettable expedition day.

Chorreras Waterfalls, two side-by-side waterfalls that cascade into a beautiful sky blue mineral water pool, is perfect for a cooling swim. A tiny, shallow canyon of volcanic rock rings the waterfalls and pool, creating an intimate and private tropical oasis.

At Victoria Waterfall, the falls drop 115 feet (35 meters) into the Rio Negro (Black River) and are where the Rio Negro Tubing Adventure starts its downriver trip. The surrounding canyon has unique vegetation and topography, and you can swim in the crystal clear pool at the waterfall’s base.

Oropendola Waterfall plunges an impressive 82 feet (25 meters) to a sparkling turquoise pool. The beautiful lush canyon of the Rio Blanco (White River) makes a picturesque tropical oasis perfect for a refreshing swim.

Oropendola Waterfall: An Easy-to-Access Waterfall in Guanacaste

Last Updated: March 7, 2024

The Rincon de la Vieja area in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province has plenty of gorgeous waterfalls. Many of these tropical cascades, though, are harder to access. Some are located deep in a rocky gorge and may even require you to wade through a river. Others, like the waterfalls in the national park , are a full day of hiking away. The Oropendola Waterfall, on the other hand, is easy to get to. Just about anyone can visit. In this post, we’ll tell what you need to know to plan your visit to the stunning Oropendola Waterfall.

Oropendola Waterfall Guanacaste Costa Rica

The Oropendola Waterfall is located in Guanacaste Province in northwestern Costa Rica.

If you want to see a waterfall during your time in Guanacaste, it’s a very good option. You could easily visit on day trip from the beach (from Tamarindo , Flamingo , Potrero , Playa Hermosa , etc.). The drive is about 1.5 hours depending on your location. Or, you could plan for a couple of nights right in Rincon de la Vieja to be nearby and explore the region’s other sights.

The waterfall abuts Rincon de la Vieja National Park and is a separate property with its own admission fee. The parking area is just before the national park entrance.

The waterfall is located on property owned by a hotel called Hacienda Guachipelin. Because of this, access is only through that hotel.

Accessing the Oropendola Waterfall

Getting tickets.

To access the Oropendola Waterfall, you will first need to buy your tickets. You can get them at the front desk of Hacienda Guachipelin or through the hotel’s website .

Note that even if you get tickets online, you will still need to check in at the hotel front desk. Here, they will give you a wristband to show the guard at the trail entrance.

Tip: Be sure to get tickets in advance. The waterfall entrance is several kilometers after Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin, and the guard at the waterfall cannot sell tickets. So, if you don’t get them beforehand, you will need to drive all the way back to the hotel.

Trail entrance Oropendola Waterfall

The Short Hike

Trail conditions.

Once you have your tickets, you can continue to the parking area. The guard will make sure you have a wristband, then you can begin the hike.

The dirt trail to the waterfall is nicely maintained, but still wild feeling. It starts wide and mostly flat. Along the sides of the trail is brushy tropical forest. On one of our visits, we even saw a snake cruising on the forest floor (a safe distance away).

In the rainy season (May through November), the trail feels very lush. However, since this is one of the driest regions of Costa Rica, in the dry season, the foliage becomes more barren.

Trail Conditions Oropendola Waterfall

About five minutes into the walk, you’ll come to a fork. You go right to get to the waterfall and then come out on the left (it’s a loop). The jungle will get thicker at this point and the trail will start to descend into the valley.

bench with trails to right and left

As you begin the descent, the trail gets narrower. They have built some sturdy steps in the steep places, making it a lot easier than it used to be.

We have done the hike without any problems with our young children (a then five-year old and toddler in a baby carrier).

Boy walking down concrete steps through forest

Hanging Bridges

The best part of the hike is right before the waterfall.

Just as you begin to feel the cool damp air from the falls, you’ll come to an impressive hanging bridge over the river gorge. This is one of the most unique hanging bridges we’ve seen in Costa Rica. It slopes downward, to get you down that last bit of elevation, and has steps built into it.

Hanging Bridge Trail to Oropendola Waterfall

The hanging bridge is a little wobbly, but all closed in and secure. You can hold onto the railing to help balance.

If you’re visiting with young kids that can go in a carrier, you may want to carry them. Our five-year old did it, but he was definitely nervous!

Hanging Bridge with Kids Oropendola Waterfall

The hike is about 15 minutes each way. Overall, it is easy.

The Oropendola Waterfall

Right after the bridge, you’ll come to the landing area. This small platform looks out onto the cascade and is a great spot to get some pictures. It can hold around 10-15 people comfortably.

Viewing Platform for Waterfall

The waterfall itself is stunning. It flows 82 feet (25 meters) over a rocky, moss-covered canyon. The water is a rich turquoise color. It gets this unique hue from minerals in the soil that are abundant in this volcanic region.

Those wanting a closer look can walk down the stairs to the riverbed.

staircase leading down into a natural pool

This area is nice because it lets you explore the base of the waterfall and get a sense of the grandeur of the canyon. In the rainy season (May through November), you may not be able to get too close since the water can be very powerful, depending on recent rainfall. But in dry season when it is tamer, you can swim around easily and get an up-close view.

Oropendola Waterfall During Rainy Season

Even during rainy season, the river usually has calmer sections. When we visited in late November, there was a nice sandy area at the bottom of the stairs where you could stand up and enjoy the cool water. Other people were venturing closer to the waterfall, dunking under and getting plenty of photos.

Swimming area Oropendola Waterfall

Rainy Season: If you’re visiting during the rainiest months like September through early November, use caution as there is a flash flood risk.

Thin waterfall next to mossy rocks

We have never seen anyone jumping into the waterfall on our visits. However, we have noticed some climbing hooks on the rocks in a few places. So, jumping in is possible during certain times of year when conditions are safe.

To help the flow of people on the trail, you now exit the waterfall a different way. From the platform, you’ll take a different hanging bridge to connect to a short dirt trail. This leads back to the fork and connects to the main trail.

Details on Planning Your Visit to the Oropendola Waterfall

IMPORTANT: Tickets need to be purchased in advance online or at the front desk of Hacienda Guachipelin. If you buy online, you will still need to get a wristband at the front desk.

Self-Guided Visit: Waterfall Entrance

Tickets are $20 per person adults, $15 per person children ages 4-12. Children under 4 are free.

Self-Guided Visit: Waterfall + Lunch

This combo package includes lunch. The lunch is a traditional-style casado (chicken, beef, or fish along with rice and beans and side salads). It comes with fresh fruit juice, soup or salad, and dessert. The meal was big and delicious.

The price for this combo is $37 per person adults, $26 per person children ages 4-12. Children under 4 are free.

Tours Available

If you like horseback riding, this is another way to arrive at the waterfall. Tours can be arranged through Hacienda Guachipelin.

Hacienda Guachipelin also has other packages with different activities that include a visit to the Oropendola Waterfall. We did the package that included the waterfall, hot springs, and lunch. Details of the options available are on their website .

The waterfall is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What to Bring

We recommend bringing a hat for the sun, water bottle, an a towel. There is no changing area so be sure to wear your bathing suit under your clothes.

Wear good-gripping sandals like Keens or sneakers for the hike. Water shoes would be handy if you plan to spend a lot of time in the riverbed and natural pool, as the bottom is rocky.

A waterproof case for your phone or a waterproof camera is nice to have to take pictures from in the pool.

No food is permitted at the waterfall but there are a couple of picnic tables in the parking area.

No restrooms are available. Of course, there are facilities a few miles down the road at Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin.

Directions to the Oropendola Waterfall

From Liberia, head north on the Interamericana, Highway 1. In a few minutes, take a right towards the town of Curubande/Rincon de la Vieja National Park (Las Pailas sector).

Follow the narrow, curvy, paved road, continuing through the small center of Curubande. A few miles after Curubande, the road will turn to rough dirt with occasional large ruts. Eventually you will come to a gate blocking the road. This is the entrance to the Hacienda Guachipelin property.

At the gate, a guard will check to make sure you have a reservation. If not, he will charge a small fee per person to enter the property (around 800 colones or $1.50). After the gate, continue on for about 3 km (1.86 miles) until you reach Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin to get your wristband. The main lobby is off the main road to the right.

After you have your wristband, keep going on the road. You’ll pass some huge geothermal pipes owned by the local electric company. In about 10 minutes, you’ll see a large sign on the left for the Oropedola Waterfall. If you get to the national park, you’ve gone too far.

The entrance to the Oropendola Waterfall is about 40 minutes from downtown Liberia.

If you’re looking to see a waterfall during your time in Guanacaste or the Rincon de la Vieja area, we highly recommend the Oropendola Waterfall. This gorgeous waterfall is easy to access, making it a great option for older people, kids, and anyone who wants to experience one of Costa Rica’s amazing waterfalls.

Knowledgeable tour guides will help you navigate the slippery rocky route. Plus, they won’t rip you off with unnecessary parking and guide fees.

This tour offers a unique opportunity for a cultural experience and to swim in the pools below gorgeous waterfalls.

You also get the added bonus of meeting an Indigenous family and learning about their culture.

Then you’ll have a great time making and trying real cocoa during the included chocolate tour. In which you actually make real, pure chocolate by hand!

La Fortuna Waterfall

waterfall tours guanacaste costa rica

Arguably the most stunning waterfall in Costa Rica. La Fortuna Waterfall is a 70-meter waterfall inside a protected biological reserve inside Arenal Volcano National Park.

The reserve encompasses hundreds of acres of wet tropical rainforest. And luxurious hot springs heated by La Fortuna’s biggest claim to fame, Volcan Arenal.

La Fortuna is the province directly east of Guanacaste at over 500 meters above sea level. The easy hike to La Fortuna Waterfall is very accessible.

It is full of lush tropical greenery and plenty of wildlife sightings. Once at the falls, you can swim in the deep, turquoise pool.

This beautiful pool feeds into the crystalline waters of La Fortuna river.

If you are looking for adventure, combine 3 awesome activities into a full day with the La Fortuna Waterfall Tour.

On this full-day Costa Rica adventure tour , you will hike to Arenal Volcano, visit the iconic Hanging Bridges, and explore La Fortuna Waterfall.

Combining 3 adventures into one gives you a fantastic experience well worth your money! Plus, it includes a free lunch.

Victoria Waterfall

Victoria Waterfall is a spectacular 35-meter waterfall inside Guanacaste’s Rincon de la Vieja National Park.

To get to Victoria Waterfalls, you must park and pay an entrance fee at the 📍 Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin.

From the hacienda, it is a 2.5 km hike through the lush canyon along the Black River, or Rio Negro to get to Victoria Waterfall.

The national park has guided tours and horseback riding tours to get to Victoria Falls. Many guided packages include a visit to another set of falls called Chorreras, which is only a 1.5 km hike.

Both waterfalls have deep, turquoise-blue pools at the bottom for you to take a refreshing swim.

Oropendola Waterfall

waterfall tours guanacaste costa rica

Located inside Guanacaste’s Rincon de la Vieja National Park, Oropendola Waterfall is a 30-meter-tall waterfall.

It’s a fun 1 km hike over a hanging bridge with stunning views of the river gorge below.

It has a surrounding rainforest canopy, and you can hear the rushing water of Oropendola Waterfall straight ahead.

After paying the entrance fee at the Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin , you can park your vehicle and begin the quick hike over the bridge.

☀️ During the dry season, the natural pool under the waterfall is turquoise and perfect for swimming. This is the best time to explore some of the most popular waterfalls.

🌧️ During the rainy season, the water is darker and may be too turbulent for swimming.

At the end of your hike and swim, you can head back to Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin for a delicious buffet lunch.

La Leona Waterfall

waterfall tours guanacaste costa rica

Another key attraction of Guanacaste’s most treasured national park, Rincon de la Vieja, La Leona Waterfall is located close to the la Vieja Volcano.

A popular day activity is to take a guided hike through the dry tropical rainforest, following the Blanco river that stems from the volcano.

The trail is a 4km round trip hike, but it is challenging. It usually takes around 3 hours to complete.

You’ll get to climb ladders, hop over streams, wade through turquoise rushing rivers, and finally scale up a rock wall with the help of a rope to reach a rock cave.

This stunning waterfall is one of the more exciting waterfalls that any adventurous traveler will love.

You’ll need to wear good hiking shoes and bring along a pair of water shoes to wade upstream through rushing water.

Rio Celeste Waterfall

Rio Celeste Waterfall in Costa Rica

Located inside the gorgeous  Tenorio Volcano National Park , Rio Celeste Waterfall is one of Costa Rica’s most famous waterfalls.

It’s the most beautiful waterfall in Guanacaste due to the electric blue waters in the underlying natural pool.  The only other time I have seen waters as blue as this in my life was at Gruatas de Tolantongo in Mexico !

Rio Celeste translates to “celestial river”, referring to the stunning blue waters. These waters result from a reaction of chemicals bestowed by volcanic rock and the convergence of two rivers.

Within Tenorio Volcano National Park, there are numerous well-maintained trails for day hikes, including the one to this beautiful waterfall.

Rio Celeste is a moderate 6 km hike that winds its way through lagoons, lookout points, and luxurious hot springs fed by Volcan Arenal.

So you’ll have plenty of opportunities to swim and enjoy a picturesque picnic.

Llanos de Cortes Waterfall

waterfall tours guanacaste costa rica

Perhaps one of the best waterfalls in Guanacaste, Llanos de Cortez Waterfall is a 20-meter tall waterfall over a wide stretch of moss-covered rocks.

Llanos de Cortez is a very easy waterfall to access, located in the town of Bagaces, and is a quick 10-minute walk from the parking lot.

Llanos de Cortez is surrounded by tropical dry forests. The wide waterfall has multiple waterfall streams flowing over the rocks into a large pool of cool dark water perfect for swimming.

The entrance fee is minimal, the parking is free, and there are local guides who will give you a guided tour to the top of the waterfall for a stunning view.

La Cangreja Waterfall

waterfall tours guanacaste costa rica

Nestled deep into the rainforest of Rincon de la Vieja National Park, La Cangreja Waterfall is a glorious waterfall in a remote location that requires a long 10 km hike both ways.

The long trek is rewarding, taking you through open highlands, shady green forests, and wooden bridges over rushing streams. Plus a few incredible lookout points before descending to the falls themselves.

La Cangreja is a 40-meter high fall surrounded by boulders with a stunning turquoise pool illuminated by sunlight.

La Cangreja’s many boulders offer the perfect spot to rest your legs and enjoy the most picturesque picnic of your life!

Belen Waterfall

Considered a hidden gem in Guanacaste, Belen Waterfall is a 20-minute drive from the small beach town of Salamara.

You can trade white sandy beaches for waterfalls in less than an hour with this set of waterfalls surrounded by natural pools.

Belen Waterfall is one of the best-kept secrets in Guanacaste, so you’re likely to have the place to yourself during the weeks.

The pools are cool and refreshing. However, during the rainy season, currents are strong. You should proceed with caution as there are no lifeguards.

These waterfalls are wide and multi-leveled. From the parking area, it’s only a five-minute walk to the falls.

Viento Fresco Waterfall

Located halfway between La Fortuna and Monteverde rainforest, Viento Fresco Waterfalls are an 11 km drive from the small town of Tilaran.

Viento Fresco Waterfalls comprise four different waterfalls along a navigable yet rustic hiking trail. There’s a 17-dollar entrance fee that you pay at the entrance to the hiking trail.

The hike leads you down steps to the first waterfall, known as Serena River Waterfall, with a 31-meter drop into a cold swimming pool.

After another descent through clearings offering spectacular lookout points, you’ll come to the next waterfall called Hidden Waterfall. These falls slip into two small caves at the base.

The third waterfall is a 75-meter-long, picturesque waterfall called Rainbow waterfall with changing rooms for shedding your hiking clothes and getting into a bathing suit.

After yet another walk down the trail, the hike ends at Slide Waterfall, a 95-meter-long waterfall that flows down a mountain face into wading pools.

While the hike on the way down is easy, the hike back up to your car is challenging, especially after you’ve spent the past two or three hours swimming and hopping around the four waterfalls.

Nauyaca Waterfalls

waterfall tours guanacaste costa rica

The best waterfall for swimming, Nauyaca Waterfalls is a stunning two-level waterfall along scraggly rocks covered in moss and surrounded by lush rainforest.

The first fall is a 45-meter drop into small natural pools that feed the longer, wider drop of 65 meters. The multi-level waterfall culminates in a massive, 6-meter-deep natural pool.

If you’re tired of wading in waist-deep water, you’ll love this swimmable waterfall.

This spectacular waterfall and swimming hole are in the southern province of Limon. It’s quite the hike, located on private property. There are some fantastic tours and guides to see these waterfalls.

If you want to trek on foot, it’ll take you about 3 hours one way. Luckily, there are horseback riding tours available.

Whether on foot or horseback, you’ll experience a tropical oasis at every turn, with lush rainforest full of colorful wildflowers and wildlife.

Awesome Places to Stay In Costa Rica

I f your idea of a dream vacation is exploring ancient history, getting a tan at the beach, or stalking sloths and monkeys on hikes through the jungle, then Costa Rica is the place for you .

And to help you get the most out of your trip, I have shared some of the best places to stay in Costa Rica (check out best Costa Rica activities here) so you can pick the one that most suits your needs. Be warned, though; no matter which one you choose, there’s a chance you’ll never want to leave!

The capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, is one of the best places to stay for anyone looking to experience the rich history of the Ticos. With outstanding museums and art galleries, stunning architecture, well-maintained parks, and friendly locals, you will not only be able to enjoy the Costa Rican culture but also an array of activities that will truly make your visit memorable.

There’s a lot to do in downtown San Jose – you don’t want to miss include the National Theater, Jade Museum, Central Park, Spanish Park, and Democracy Plaza. Plan a day or two to visit these – it’s a chance to not only catch up on your history lessons but also to mingle with the welcoming locals.

But don’t miss the nightlife either. Under the moonlight, the city shines bright with clubs, bars, and restaurants, offering a fantastic opportunity for anyone who loves to party.

Perhaps one of the things you’ll love about San Jose is convenience. The city is only 30 minutes from Juan Santa Maria International Airport and there is an extensive range of accommodation options in and around it to fit every budget. We love the Adventure Inn for our first or last night in-country! You can get 10% off your stay by clicking here .

And because of its central location, it makes an excellent base for day trips to waterfalls, volcanoes, and cloud forests.

Famed for its beautiful Pacific coast beaches , majestic volcanoes, and picturesque mountain ranges, Guanacaste is a true paradise for nature lovers. Tourists flock here to enjoy the long summer days, diverse wildlife, and the active culture of the locals. Some of the best beaches are in Guanacaste .

Also, this part of Costa Rica doesn’t rain much, which makes it the perfect place to participate in activities like horseback riding, ziplining, water sports, and other thrills that may require a sunny day.

You’ll get to Guanacaste from Liberia International Airport , located just outside of Liberia, the delightful capital of Guanacaste. As soon as you land, you’ll see luxury vehicles waiting to pick up arrivals and transport them off to the most luxurious hotels and all-inclusive resorts in the country.

The Gulf of Papagayo is perhaps where the majority will be headed, and it’s where you want to go too if you want to experience the finest accommodation in the region. We adore staying at the all-inclusive Planet Hollywood and discovering the hidden beaches of Nacazcolo and Cabuyal .

In the Gulf of Papagayo, you’ll find all manner of lodging options from high-end five-star and boutique hotels to family and adults-only hideaways, that cater to every budget. But don’t spend all your vacation here. There’s still a lot more to explore in other parts of Guanacaste away from the Pacific Ocean. Start with Palo Verde National Park.

Nicoya Peninsula

If you want a quiet vacation away from the real world, Nicoya Peninsula is a great place. The off-the-beaten-path escape exudes a low-key, hippie vibe that draws people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

However, because it’s too secluded, not many people come here. But perhaps that’s a good thing because you will have all those beautiful mountainous landscapes and jaw-dropping beaches all to yourself!

Watersports are huge here, thanks to the magnificent beaches in the area including Malpais, Montezuma, and Santa Teresa . You will particularly see surfers, as this is one of the best surf spots in Central America , but there is also no shortage of swimmers, scuba divers, and other watersports junkies. You’ll find plenty of yogis and wellness enthusiasts too; don’t leave without squeezing in a class of yoga!

If you would rather watch some wildlife , make arrangements for a day hike through Cabo Blanco and see all kinds of animals including sloths , white-tailed coatis, coyotes, and howler monkeys . After you’re done adventuring, there is an abundance of places to eat and sleep. You can find accommodation at hotels near the beach or in one of the charming surf towns around.

I can’t wait to discover the turtle nesting in July at Ostional- I plan to head there this summer to check it out!

Located in Cartago province, in the verdant Central Valley, Turrialba is a beautiful little town that gives its residents some picturesque views of Costa Rica’s countryside and direct access to the Turrialba volcano. From the summit, Poas, Irazu, and Barva volcanoes can also be seen in the distance when the sky is clear.

If you thrive on adrenaline-rushing adventures , staying in this town will serve you exactly that. With thundering rivers, extensive wildlife, pristine tropical forests, and lush mountainous landscapes, Turrialba is one of the best areas for nature lovers and adrenaline junkies to spend a vacation in Costa Rica.

Try river rafting along the Reventazon and Pacuare rivers; it’s one of the most popular activities in the area and will certainly give you an unforgettable vacation.

Other thrills you can venture into include canyoning, ziplining, animal spotting, and canopy tours. For history lovers, Guayabo National Monument would be an amazing place to explore.

The Pacuare Lodge is a favorite place to stay for rafters and adventure seekers. You have to get there via raft or 4×4- and the accommodations are luxe. Once you get there, make sure to try the food- it’s divine. Oh, and the birdwatching is unparalleled.

Puerto Viejo

A laid-back Caribbean vibe, idyllic beaches, thriving forests, abundant wildlife, and cheap accommodations are what welcome you to Puerto Viejo.

You will likely not find a lot of things to do here as you would in the town’s northern neighbor, Tortuguero, or in areas along the Pacific Coast, but that’s the beauty of it all. You want to relax, escape from the real world, and experience the true Caribbean atmosphere. That’s what this destination does for you.

But don’t get me wrong. Staying here doesn’t mean your vacation will be boring. Absolutely not! There are so many places to go and things to see that will truly make your stay enjoyable.

The Jaguar Rescue Center is one of them – go see sloths, howler monkeys, and other animals that call this place home.

You could also visit Finca La Isla botanical garden, go on a chocolate tour, or bike around the city and socialize with the locals. And the beach is a no-brainer; don’t leave without riding the waves !

Cahuita National Park is a neighbor to Puerto Viejo. There you’ll find an abundance of sea turtles and ample snorkeling opportunities. You can also visit Playa Manzanillo just south of Puerto Viejo- it’s one of the most picturesque beaches on Costa Rica’s Caribbean side.

Stay at the Banana Azul.  Each room has gorgeous photography of Costa Rica, it’s right next to the beach, and the pool is the perfect temperature.  One of the biggest advantages of the rooms here is that several include kitchens, so you can cook yourself to save some money .

Manuel Antonio

The coastal village of Manuel Antonio is one of the most visited places in Costa Rica and for a good reason – it has magnificent natural beauty, extensive wildlife, gorgeous beaches, and excellent cuisine.

People flock here to spot monkeys, sloths, snakes, frogs, and other wildlife in the phenomenal Manuel Antonio National Park.

You will definitely love the park too but there are other fantastic attractions you want to explore during your stay. You can do a canopy zip line tour , visit waterfalls , go whitewater rafting, or just chill at the beach. After lots of wildlife and beach activities, sit back, relax, and take in the breathtaking views of the sunset on a sunset sailing tour.

Accommodation options are in abundance. There is no shortage of resorts, hotels, hostels, and apartments in Manuel Antonio. If you are planning a luxury vacation, you will have plenty of exquisite ocean-view resorts and other 5-star lodging options to choose from. Similarly, you will find many pocket-friendly and mid-range options.

We love to stay at the Karahe Beach Resort.  It’s close to the beach and a full Costa Rican breakfast is included.  Plus, you can walk right to the entrance of Manuel Antonio National Park.

Don’t forget that Manuel Antonio is the gateway to many other places in the south- namely the sleepy ex-pat town of Dominical , and the majestic whale watching available in Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita, Costa Rica .  The Nauyaca waterfalls are close too.

Corcovado National Park

If Manuel Antonio doesn’t do it for you, Corcovado definitely will. While Costa Rica is home to so many national parks Corcovado just might be the crown jewel. It houses over 50 percent of all animal and plant species in Costa Rica.

Here, you will find not only a cloud forest, mangrove swamp, and palm forest among other flora but also jaguars, coatis, pumas, ocelots, and other feline animal species. It’s no wonder this park once held the title of being one of the most biodiverse places in the world!

While you could spend your day birdwatching, hiking through the park, or basically just exploring the wildlife, there is a plethora of other activities that could make your stay fun too including beach hopping, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, gold mining tour, or scuba diving at the Cano Island.

There’s a lodge inside the park where you can spend the night after a day of exploration. You will find a few structures here with netted bunk beds and other offerings like bathrooms and showers, internet, and electricity for your overnight stay.

We love to stay at Poor Man’s Paradise.  The food is included, and the trip through the mangroves on the boat to arrive- well, there’s nothing like it.  You’ll be able to book all kinds of tours with experienced guides here, and the sunsets are amazing.

The small town of Tortuguero is located on the Caribbean coast, and houses one of the most popular turtle nesting sites on the planet. In fact, that’s where the town and the famous Tortuguero National Park got their name.

But as much as this area is about marine turtles, there is more to see here. The surrounding canals, jungle, and mangroves offer a dwelling place for diverse other wildlife including howler monkeys, toucans, jaguars, and up to 300 species of birds.

Most people visit the town mainly to go to the national park and experience the vibrant local culture and will probably be here just for a day or two.

But for those who choose to stick around for a couple more days, there are lots of fun and unique activities to be enjoyed including going on a cocoa tour, eating from a floating restaurant, hiking up Tortuguero Volcano, and relaxing at the beach.

And of course, there are plenty of amazing places to stay – whether you’re a budget, medium, or luxury traveler.

Make sure to stay at the Mawamba Lodge.  It’s the only one that has access both to the beach and the river- making it easy to walk right out your cabin door and see the sea turtles nesting.

Don’t miss eating the Caribbean “ rice and beans ” or the Caribbean chicken at Miss Miriam’s. She cooks right in her own home, and the food is divine.  Make sure to make a reservation beforehand- her table fills up quickly!

I am totally biased about San Ramon since our family is from here, but hear me out. I love the small-town charm of San Ramon- there is a gorgeous church in the center of town surrounded by everything you could need store-wise.

You are an hour from Playa Mantas , an hour from San Jose, an hour from La Fortuna- you get the idea.  Plus, the best restaurants in the country are right in town.

We love to visit the nature areas of La Paz- especially the Trapiche .  There’s Las Musas waterpark not far from the city center, and Finca Libertad Pura gives some of the best horseback riding through the coffee fields that you will ever find. The weekly farmer’s market provides entertainment and the freshest Costa Rican fruit you can find.

Finally, San Ramon has a thriving ex-pat population, which means many of the people in town speak English.  You can get around easily on foot, or if you choose to rent a car you can explore the greater area.

We love to stay at the Airbnb Casa Las Golondrinas- the apartment is fully equipped and sleeps 4 comfortably.  The views of the ocean and the city center can’t be beaten- don’t miss the sunsets especially!

The majestic Arenal Volcano is the iconic photo everyone wants from Costa Rica.  But that’s not the only reason to visit La Fortuna .  (Again, I’m biased- it’s my favorite place in Costa Rica!)

La Fortuna retains its small-town charm while offering big excitement with some of the best activities .  From waterfall chasing to zip lining ( Eco Glide is the best for families), night tours to rafting and rappelling- you will have a ton of fun.

And let’s not forget the best part of La Fortuna- soaking in endless hot springs . Whether you love something like Kalambu Water Park for the kids, the majestic man-made springs of Baldi , or the natural beauty of Tabacon and Eco Termales, there is a hot spring for everyone.

Given the proximity to the center of agriculture in Costa Rica, you’ll find some of the best restaurants in the country right in La Fortuna.  Don’t miss eating at a small soda like La Hormiga, or try some fancy traditional Costa Rican food at Don Rufino.

We love to stay at Volcano Lodge and Springs because the food is great, there’s a playground right by the bar/restaurant, and you can get your own personal hot spring right on the patio to your room! If that’s not your style, there are lots of other accommodations in La Fortuna as well.

While it can have the connotation of a party town, we actually really love to stay in Jaco with kids.

On the north end of the beach, there’s a big estuary where kids can play in the salt water without having to worry about the big waves.  The south end of the beach brings baby waves perfect for playing with littles, or for beginner surfers wanting to go out and try their hand at surfing.

There is tons of international food to eat in Jaco , and the weekly farmer’s market is a ton of fun to walk through.  If you want to cook at home, there are great grocery stores here too. Want a cheap meal? Soda Las Olas can’t be beaten.

Don’t miss a horseback ride or a hike out to the lookout over the beach- you can find horse rentals right on the south end of the beach.

Don’t miss the secret beaches nearby. We love both Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca , and they are right next to each other. We also enjoyed the crocodile tour along the Rio Tarcoles.

Finally, we love to stay at The Palms- the apartments are pristine and the location is excellent. There are lots of hotels in Jaco too if The Palms isn’t your style.

I definitely saved the best for last. Internationally known for it’s lush jungle rainforests, pristine cloudforest, and some of the best insect and bird watching in the world, Monteverde has to be one of the most popular places to visit in Costa Rica.

Made up of two villages- Monteverde and Santa Elena, the path between the two of them are littered with great restaurants and tons of hotels. When you add the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in there- well there’s endless hiking and bird watching to be had.

The longest zip line in Costa Rica is fro Sky Adventures, and the Cafe Monteverde Tour will teach you everything you need to know about Costa Rican coffee .

We love to stay at Burbi Lake Lodge- it’s quiet and calm and just off the beaten track of the main road. If you aren’t liking Burbi then there are plenty of Monteverde hotels to choose from.
