How to Get to Whitehaven Beach: Ultimate Day Trip Guide

Whitehaven Beach in Australia is truly a remarkable natural wonder and is widely considered one of Australia’s best beaches. Nestled within the heart of the Whitsunday Islands, this 7 km stretch of silica sand is a breathtaking sight.

If you’re visiting the Whitsundays, a day trip to Whitehaven Beach should be right at the top of your list. The shimmering turquoise waters contrasted against pure white sands aren’t just postcard-perfect – they’re the real deal.

So, if you’re keen on taking a day trip from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Here’s your ultimate guide on how to get to Whitehaven Beach, and tips for visiting Australia’s most iconic and photographed beaches.

Table of Contents

What Makes Whitehaven Beach So Special?

A visit to the stunning Whitehaven Beach is the most popular Whitsundays day trip, and for good reason. But what truly sets this beach apart from so many others across Australia?

The unique feature of Whitehaven Beach is that the sand is 98% pure silica .

Not only does this give the sand its sparkling white appearance, but it also remains cool underfoot, no matter how scorching the Aussie sun gets. It honestly squeaked under my feet as I walked along the length of the pristine, untouched beach.

whitehaven beach trip

As part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park, this pristine beach is well-protected and hasn’t been overly developed.

You won’t find any beach bars or overflowing trash cans here, just an untouched natural paradise with sparkling crystal-clear water and abundant native wildlife.

The rest of the world agrees, with Whitehaven Beach being awarded with the title of the Best Beach in the World in 2021 as voted for in the annual TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Award.

Where is Whitehaven Beach?

Whitehaven Beach stretches along part of Whitsunday Island, the largest island in the Whitsundays archipelago.

Nestled off the coast of Queensland, Australia, the Whitsundays comprise 74 stunning islands that dot the Coral Sea, close to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.

whitehaven beach trip

Most visitors to Whitsunday Island will visit Whitehaven Beach from Airlie Beach, the mainland town that acts as the gateway to the Whitsundays. It is one of the most popular Airlie Beach day trips , attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Read about how to get to Airlie Beach in my guide here .

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Whitehaven Beach, and the Whitsundays in general, is during the dry season from May to October however you can visit all year round.

Dry Season (May to October)

  • Weather: Expect pleasant temperatures, with averages ranging from 19°C to 26°C. The skies are generally clear, and there’s less rainfall, making it a prime time for beach outings and sailing. In particular, August to October is best for sailing due to calmer winds.
  • Visitor Numbers: This period, particularly June to August, sees a spike in tourists as many domestic tourists seek to escape winter in the major cities, but the Whitsundays remain balmy.

Wet Season (November to April)

  • Weather: Warmer, with temperatures hovering between 24°C to 31°C. While there’s a higher chance of tropical showers, they’re usually brief and followed by sunshine.
  • Visitor Numbers: Fewer tourists venture here during these months, except around the Christmas and New Year holidays.

While both seasons have their unique charm, if you’re aiming for consistently sunny days, consider visiting between May and October. Another benefit of visiting during this time is that stinger suits don’t usually need to be worn when swimming in the water.

However, if you prefer a more tranquil experience with the islands mostly to yourself and don’t mind occasional showers, the wet season could be your ideal timeframe.

Always keep an eye on the weather forecasts, especially during the wet season, when tropical cyclones are possible.

How to Get to Whitehaven Beach

As Whitehaven Beach is secluded and tucked away on Whitsunday Island, over 30km from the mainland, it isn’t the easiest beach to get to.

The majority of visitors join a Whitehaven Beach Tour from Airlie Beach. The journey from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach is all part of the fun adventure though!

These are your main options for how to get to Whitehaven Beach.

How to Get to Whitehaven Beach from Airlie Beach

By tour boat.

The most popular method to traverse from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven is by boat. Numerous daily tours and charters are available, offering a range of experiences from exhilarating jet boat rides to luxury yacht cruises.

I share my personal recommendations below based on my trip.

By Helicopter

When taking my scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach, I spotted a helicopter perched in the middle of the beach with no other neighbours nearby for miles.

A helicopter tour is definitely a unique and luxurious way to explore this natural paradise all to yourself!

By Sailing Yacht

Many of the overnight sailing tours will visit Whitehaven Beach. Or, charter a yacht and explore at your own pace and itinerary.

Companies offer bareboat charters (without a professional skipper or crew) or an option to sail with an experienced skipper. I spent two nights sailing the Whitsundays, and while we were planning on visiting Whitehaven Beach, inclement weather on our second day meant we had to come up with a Plan B. Luckily I was able to join a day tour when I got back to Airlie Beach to make sure I didn’t miss out!

How to Get to Whitehaven Beach from Hamilton Island

It’s a lot quicker to get to Whitehaven Beach for those staying on Hamilton Island, at 30 minutes journey time compared to 45-60 minutes plus from Airlie Beach.

Cruise Whitsundays offer full-day and half-day Whitehaven Beach tours from Hamilton Island.

Whitehaven Beach Day Trip Tours

Many companies offer Whitehaven Beach tours from Airlie Beach. Not all of these have the same inclusions. For example, some tours have extras like pick-up from your accommodation, lunch and snorkelling stops on the tour.

See the below table for a comparison of the main tours, and my pick for the best Whitehaven Beach tour.

Airlie to Whitehaven Beach Tours Compared

All of the below options are full-day tours, except for the Whitehaven Cruise which is the only half day Whitehaven Beach tour.

All of the below tours, again except for the half-day cruise, include a stop at Hill Inlet Lookout.

Best Whitehaven Beach Tour

My pick for the best tour, and the tour I chose for my visit, was the Ocean Rafting Snorkel, Walk and Whitehaven tour.

I picked this tour as the semi-rigid inflatable boats offer the fastest transfer times from Airlie Beach to Whitsundays.

Another benefit is that they are the only tour operator who can pull up directly onto the beach.

When you take a tour on a larger boat you have to spend time waiting around to transfer to a small tender boat in groups.

whitehaven beach trip

Ocean Rafting is also the only company to offer two different tours: the Northern Exposure and Southern Lights tours.

In summary, the Northern Exposure tour offers more snorkelling time (2 different snorkelling spots) and the Southern Lights offer more time on Whitehaven Beach (with 1 snorkelling spot).

I chose the Southern Lights tour as I wanted to do some of the nearby hikes on Whitsunday Island as well as have some time to relax on the beach.

Lunch isn’t included in the ticket price, but you can add it to your booking for an additional $20 per adult. This suited me, as it meant I could bring my own snacks for the day and packed lunch.

All in all, this tour is a great option for adventure seekers who want a fast and thrilling transfer to the Whitsunday Islands. There was a mix of families, groups and couples on my Southern Lights tour.

whitehaven beach trip

One thing to note is that the boats are not fully enclosed.

If you are looking for a more traditional boat cruise, with the option of being completely indoors, consider the Whitehaven Eco-Cruise or Big Island Day Tour . The Ocean Rafting vessels aren’t enclosed.

Other Tour Recommendations

Tour with the most time on whitehaven beach .

Whitehaven Half-Day Cruise : this tour is essentially an Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach Ferry. The cruise doesn’t stop at Hill Inlet or include a guide, but it does allow you to spend the most time relaxing on and exploring Whitehaven Beach itself.

Most Comfortable Boat Tour

Big Island Day Tour : this large ferry seats 100 passengers and is air-conditioned. There is onboard commentary from a guide and a 360-degree rooftop observation deck.

Tour with the Most Snorkelling

Ocean Rafting (choose the Northern Exposure option) or the Whitehaven Eco-Cruise both have two snorkelling stops.

Tour on a Sailing Yacht

Camira Sailing Adventure : this is the only tour listed that is on a sailing yacht, an 85 ft catamaran. This is more oriented to adult travellers, as a gourmet lunch and alcoholic beverages are included (not suitable for children under 4 years).

whitehaven beach trip

Things to Do on Whitehaven Beach

Once you arrive on Whitehaven Beach, most people will stay close to the water’s edge at the southern end of the beach where all the tours and boats pull in.

My advice? Go for a walk down the stretch of 7km of alabaster white sand to find your own patch of paradise away from the crowds.

whitehaven beach trip

Hiking Trails Whitehaven Beach

If you’re up for a hike, there are several lookouts in the immediate vicinity near the south end of Whitehaven Beach.

I took the Solway circuit to Solway Lookout, which is a 1.2km circuit (one-way) from Whitehaven Beach. The Lookout is a large boulder that overlooks the south end of the island.

From here, you could continue hiking further onwards to Chance Bay which is a secluded and peaceful beach.

whitehaven beach trip

Another hike accessible from Whitehaven Beach is the Whitehaven Beach lookout and Headland track.

I ran out of time after taking the Solway Circuit before needing to jump back on the boat, however, this trail offers an uninterrupted view of the entire 7km shoreline of Whitehaven Beach.

whitehaven beach trip

Facilities on Whitehaven Beach

Facilities are very limited on Whitehaven Beach, and amount to bush toilets (long drop toilets with no flush) and a few shaded picnic tables.

There is no fresh water, so be sure to bring water with you onto the beach. I could refill my drink bottle for free on my tour, or drinks were available to purchase for a fee.

There are no rubbish bins on Whitehaven Beach, so make sure to leave no trace and take your trash home with you to preserve this natural wonder.

What to Bring on your Whitehaven Day Trip

  • Swimwear and Towel: I recommend wearing your bathers underneath your clothes as there isn’t a lot of room to get changed on the boats
  • Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Water Bottle
  • Light Jacket : It can get breezy
  • Snacks and Lunch: if not included as part of your tour.
  • Snorkel: Our tour included snorkel and flippers, however, check with your tour company beforehand.

Final Thoughts

That wraps up this ultimate guide with everything you need to know for visiting the iconic Whitehaven Beach. Whichever option you choose, you are bound to leave with a camera roll full of memories, and an experience you won’t forget!

Our meeting time is 8 am sharp. Departing from Coral Sea Marina, we head to the snorkel location for around 90 minutes. Then off to Whitehaven Beach for lunch and a guided walk to the south Whitehaven lookout. The tour returns to Coral Sea Marina at 4 pm

Whitehaven beach south end looking north

ZigZag Whitsundays Whitehaven Beach Tour will spend around 2 hours discovering the new south lookout and the beach. This Beach is continually voted Australia’s number 1 beach in the Trip Advisor awards. The beach is 7 km long and holds some of the purest silica sand in the world, totalling around 98.7%. ZigZag will ensure you escape the daily crowds and have plenty of time to explore with family and friends. When the boat first arrives at Whitehaven, you will be served a cold buffet lunch.

Guests on the platform at the south whitehaven lookout

The new South Whitehaven Lookout opened in 2019 . You will see a spectacular view down the entire 7 km of Whitehaven Beach; in the other, you will see the open ocean and islands leading back to the mainland. The walk is around 45 minutes return (including time at the top) and is beginner grade and you will need a level of low-medium fitness. In my personal opinion, the South Lookout delivers more wow factor every day of the week, while the Northern Lookout highly depends on tides and is overcrowded.

Snorkelling In The Whitsundays

Whether you have snorkelled before or this is your first time, the Whitsunday Islands are perfect for beginners and advanced alike. With the coral reefs sheltered from wind and tide and most coral starting only meters from the beach, this is the ideal location for the whole family to see lots of marine life like turtles and Nemo (clownfish) in a natural environment. On our Whitsundays Day Trip, all the snorkelling equipment, including wet suits, is provided along with flotation devices if needed. The qualified crew will watch over everyone on rescue boards so you can feel safe and enjoy the best coral and tropical fish the Whitsunday region has to offer.

Where is Whitehaven Beach ?

Whitehaven Beach is located on the southeast corner of Whitsunday Island, Queensland, Australia.

The closest population is on Hamilton Island and the coastal town of Airlie Beach (gateway to the Whitsunday Islands).

The island is all protected National Park, there are no houses or accommodation on the island so, the only way to get there is by boat, helicopter or seaplane.

Tours depart Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach, both these locations have an airport with flights daily from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

10 Facts about Whitehaven Beach

1. Unlike most beaches in the world Whitehaven is made of 98% pure silica sand, which gives the beach a stunning white colour.

2. The whiteness of the silica sand makes the sand cool to touch even on the hottest days, walking barefoot is a breeze.

3. The rocks around the beach contain no silica, meaning all this sand was washed here by tides thousands of years ago.

4. All of the plants and animals are the same as you find on the mainland because the Islands haven’t been separated from the mainland for long enough for any kind of evolutionary changes to happen

5. The Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven tend to have not as dense growth and dryer conditions as those surrounding Airlie Beach – like Conway National Park because they don’t see as much rainfall as the mainland.

6. There are 10 dedicated campsites at the south end of Whitehaven Beach that takes a maximum of 36 guests and 6 long drop toilets.

7. In 2019 the new South Whitehaven Beach lookout opened at the south end of the beach, unlike the famous northern lookout, the views at the south are stunning no matter what the tide is doing, and you can see over the eastern side of the Whitsunday passage

8. Whitehaven Beach stretches over 7km with the inlet at one end and a rocky outcrop  just before a passage at the south end

9. On the far northern end lays the famous inlet with swirling sands pictured at low tide. Across the inlet from Whitehaven beach is Bettys Beach , whilst technically not Whitehaven it holds the exact same silica sand

10. This 7km Beach is the most photographed and awarded beach in Australia, continually in the top 10 beaches in the world and revisiting the number 1 spot in the 2021 TripAdvisor awards

What is the cheapest way to get to Whitehaven Beach?

A half-day boat tour is the cheapest way to travel from Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach or Daydream Island to Whitehaven Beach.

If you are worried about seasickness, choose a fast boat like ZigZag Whitsundays , fast boats sit on top of the water and do not get the rolling motion that causes seasickness.

When the tour boats stop at each location it’s away from the wind so you don’t need to worry about a rocking boat.

What should i take on a Whitehaven Beach Tour ?

Inside a small daypack, we recommend you should take the below on any Whitehaven Beach Tours.

  • Change of clothes
  • Water bottle and snacks

What is the best Whitehaven Beach Tour?

Choosing the best Whitehaven Beach Tour comes down to what you want for a day in the Whitsunday Islands, here are my 3 recommendations

  • ZigZag Whitsundays – for visiting the south end of Whitehaven Beach and the south Lookout, they also include Chalkies Beach, Haslwood Island Lookout and 1 Snorkel Location. Pros – Fast boat, more locations, inclusive ticket pricing, small group tour of 30 people, very comfortable boat seats, very low seasickness probability. Cons – does not visit hill inlet lookout
  • Thundercat Whitsundays – for visiting the north end of Whitehaven Beach, hill inlet lookout, they also include 2 snorkel locations. Pros – fast boat, 2 snorkel locations, hill inlet lookout. Cons – does not visit the south end of the beach, no dietary requirements provided, plastic seating.
  • Cruise Whitsundays Half Day Tour – perfect for guests low on time and just want to visit Whitehaven Beach without snorkelling. Pros – Half day tour, south end and lookout, an air-conditioned ferry ride. Cons – Large group numbers in the 100s, no snorkelling or lunches.

Is there a shop at Whitehaven Beach?

There are no shops on Whitehaven Beach the island is uninhabited.

Can you walk on Whitehaven Beach?

Visitors can spend time walking the beach or the tracks at each end of the beach which leads to the lookouts.

Where is the best spot on Whitehaven Beach?

In my opinion, the best spot on Whitehaven Beach is the south end, specifically the South Lookout. This area offers stunning views of the pristine beach and is considered the true Whitehaven Beach.

On the other hand, the northern end accessed through Tongue Bay, known as Betty’s Beach and Whitehaven Bay, can get quite crowded between 10am and 4pm. While still beautiful, and you will see Hill Inlet (at the right tide) there is no beating standing on the named beach.

Is Whitehaven Beach accessible by wheelchair?

Unfortunately no, there is no wheelchair access on the beach

What is the sand at Whitehaven Beach made of?

Whitehaven Beach’s sand is cool to touch on hot days and perfectly compliments the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays. Made up of 98.9% pure silica, it has a unique white colour and powdery texture. The sand is so fine that it can easily get into and harm electronic gadgets.

Is it safe to swim at Whitehaven Beach?

You can swim at Whitehaven Beach all year round due to the warm tropical waters. There are no large waves or rips and the shoreline is shallow with a light decline.  However, during the months of November To April, it is advised to use a stinger suit due to jellyfish.

Are there any dangerous animals at Whitehaven Beach?

Dangerous marine stingers can be found in the waters all year round but mostly from November to April, like any ocean there are sharks, and saltwater crocodiles can be in the sea at all times of the year, but is very rare to see them around the islands

Are there any public restrooms at Whitehaven Beach?

Public restrooms are available at the South end of Whitehaven Beach only. These are hybrid compostable toilets.

Is there any shade available at Whitehaven Beach?

The south end of Whitehaven Beach has picnic tables with sunshade roofs, there is also shade under the trees that line the beach. Some tours also provide shade tents.

How to experience the best Whitehaven Beach Day Trip

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: October 9, 2021

Are you planning a day trip to Whitehaven Beach? Below you will find information and tips to help you choose the best tour plus make the most of this island paradise!

Paradise. One word that beautifully sums up a visit to Whitehaven Beach! We have visited Whitehaven Beach on day trips from both Airlie Beach and Daydream Island and have put together this guide to help you plan your perfect visit.

Whitehaven Beach is located in the Whitsunday Islands,  a group of 74 tropical islands off the Queensland Coast in Australia and is consistently named as one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia and the world.

The beach with its pure white sand and stunning location is a bucket list destination for both Australians and visitors to the country and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Queensland.

There are various day trips available to Whitehaven Beach from Airlie, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island. In this article I will talk through our experiences of taking two different tours – one from Airlie Beach and the other from Daydream Island.

Where is Whitehaven Beach?

What is the best way to get to whitehaven beach, when is the best time of year to visit whitehaven beach, book your whitehaven beach day trip, check-in at 6.30 am, arrive at whitehaven beach, things to do at whitehaven beach when you have 1/2 day, returning to airlie beach, airlie beach accommodation, tour options to the whitsundays and whitehaven beach, planning your visit to queensland, where is whitehaven beach and other questions about visiting the whitsundays.

Whitehaven Beach is located on Whitsunday Island the largest of the islands that comprise the ‘Whitsundays” off the east coast of Australia. The nearest town is Airlie Beach.

There are numerous tour companies offering day trips to the beach. Take your pick between boat/plane/helicopter!

Marine stingers may be present in the waters of tropical Queensland all year round but may be more prevalent from October to May. We visited in early September and chose not to wear stinger suits but you do so at your own risk. Due to the hotter, wetter weather between those months I would recommend visiting between June and September.

Whitehaven Beach Day 1/2 day option from Airlie

After evaluating the various available Whitehaven beach tours from Airlie Beach we decided to book a half-day trip with Cruise Whitsundays .

If you are considering which day cruise to take out to the beach this guide will give you an idea of what to expect from the Cruise Whitsundays half-day tour as well as tips to ensure you make the most of your day.

Welcome sign and map of the Whitsundays

Check-in is at the Cruise Whitsundays Maritime Terminal . For the half-day morning cruise check-in is at 6.30 am (there is an afternoon Whitehaven beach tour available too). Parking is available at the terminal. It cost us $6 for 12 hours and there was plenty of spaces available at 6.30 am when we arrived.

If you don’t have time to eat breakfast prior to check-in there is a cafe at the terminal.

We boarded the Cruise Whitsundays boat at 6.45 and were met by a very friendly and approachable crew.

We were kept informed of the itinerary during the day. The crew were also very knowledgeable and told us lots of interesting information about the islands as we sailed through.

The boat stops at Hamilton Island to pick up more passengers and then sails directly to Whitehaven Beach.

Due to the possibility of stingers, we were all offered a stinger suit if we wanted it before arriving at the beach.

Airlie Port Terminal

After arriving at Whitehaven you transfer to the beach on a smaller boat.

First steps on the pure white sand of the beach are magical.  The sand is 98% pure white silica and felts like no sand I have stood on before. It is so fine it is possible to clean jewellery with it. It also does a great job of exfoliating feet.

Make sure you keep phones and cameras away from the sand as it will scratch surfaces.

Transferring from the boat to Whitehaven Beach

Once everyone is on the beach the Cruise Whitsundays crew will set up a covered area on the beach where you can get water when you need it. We had bought sandwiches and snacks on the boat to eat on the beach though the seagulls were a slight problem.

If you are on a half-day trip there are 2 1/2 hours to enjoy the beach before transferring back to the boat. We visited in early September and although it was hot it wasn’t unbearable. I would be concerned about the lack of shade if visiting in the summer months.

Beautiful white sands and clear seas of Whitehaven Beach

The white silica sands stretch for over 7 kms along Whitsunday Island. The sand is truly dazzling and combine that with the crystal clear water and you will feel like you are in paradise.

There is plenty of space to put down your towel and enjoy the views – relax, chill out and enjoy your time on the island.

With the half-day option you are limited to the beach area itself (you see more on the full day trip which includes Hill Inlet but more about that later)

Take a stroll along the beach!

Keep an eye out for the seaplanes which land and take off just beside the beach!

Check out the local wildlife!

Seaplane and boats at Whitehaven Beach

Once the 2 1/2 hours is up everyone transfers back to the main boat. Make sure to shake yourself, bags, shoes etc and leave the sand at the beach rather than take it with you. Your feet will be washed as you get back on the boat to remove any last grains.

During the return journey refreshments and cakes and biscuits were available.

The boat heads back to Hamilton Island where you change to another boat for the return trip to Airlie Port. Arrival time was approximately 1.45 pm.
