The Wombats announce 2022 Australian tour for new album Fix Yourself, Not The World

A 2021 press shot of The Wombats

  • X (formerly Twitter)

It’s been a minute, but the trio will be back Down Under in June to show off album #5: Fix Yourself, Not The World.

Pre-pandemic, The Wombats visited us so often that Australian Immigration were practically on a first-name basis with Murphy, Tord, and Dan. Voted one of triple j listeners' fave live acts in 2019 , the band are finally dusting off their passports for their first headline Australian shows since 2018.

The national tour spans big stages in capital cities in support of The Wombats’ new album, Fix Yourself, Not The World (out 7 January, 2022).

Update: The Wombats have added a second Sydney show and the first round of special guests to their upcoming shows.

View the dates below. All tickets are up for grabs right now, view more info at secretsounds.com .

Frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy told triple j upon release the single is “probably one of the poppier ones” from Fix Yourself, Not The World . He’s particularly proud of “a really dodgy rhyme in there with Radiohead, and it worked.” Listen below.

“I don’t want to keep talking about pandemics and lockdowns, but [this song] was about the start of all this shit just happening to us and the strain that it was putting on interpersonal relationships,” Murph added. “Divorce rates in the US were skyrocketing and you could tell people [were] figuring out that humans aren’t supposed to be stuck in the same house as the same people all the time.”

Recorded remotely over 12 months between Murph’s home in L.A., bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen in Oslo and drummer Dan Haggis in London, Fix Yourself, Not The World follows on from Murph going solo as Love Fame Tragedy and 2018 album Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life , which gifted The Wombats their third consecutive ARIA Top 5 Album Charts ranking.

“I was so happy with our last album I was like ‘Right, it’s gotta be as good and if we’re lucky we can get it better’,” says Murph, who noted early demos had “some kind of James Murphy/LCD Soundsystem in there, bit of David Byrne and David Bowie. I felt like it was our job to bring that out as much as possible.”

Hailing from Liverpool, England, UK, Indie rock outfit, The Wombats, impressed with their first spate of singles, scoring hits with "Moving to New York" and "Let;s Dance to Joy Division."

The band were formed in 2003, having met whilst studying at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Featuring Matthew Murphy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard), Daniel Haggis (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), the band quickly got to work making music, They released several Eps in their early years, including "The Hangover Sessions," "No. 3" and "The Daring Adventures of Sgt. Wimbo and His Pet Otter."

After releasing their debut, "Girls, Boys and Marsupials," in Japan only, they then released a number of singles that would bring The Wombats their first taste of success. "Backfire at the Disco" peaked at number 35 in the UK SIngles Chart, followed by "Kill the Director" which also received lots of airplay. Their debut album on 14th Floor Records, "The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation," stormed the album charts, reaching number 11 in October 2007, bolstered by the success of singles "Let's Dance to Joy Division" and a re-release of "Moving to New York," which went to number 13 in the UK Singles Chart.

In 2008, the band embarked on a number of tours, traveling across the UK, Europe and Japan. They also became a big name on the annual festival circuit, playing at Glastonbury Festival, Reading & Leeds Festival and T in the Park.Their second album, "The Wombats Present… This Modern Glitch," appeared in 2010, featuring the top 40 single "Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)" as well as "Techno Fan." The album itself faired well, reaching number three in the album chart.

It was three years before The Wombats returned with new music, releasing the single, "Your Body Is a Weapon," which received significant support on BBC Radio 1. To great excitement, The Wombats began a countdown till the release of their third studio album, "Glitterbug," for a January 2015 release.

Live reviews

Oh my goodness!

It's the twelve of April on a sunny day. Me and my friend just arrived in vienna at the "Arena Wien". We hadn't seen a Wombats concert before and were something you could describe as very excited. The two pre-bands play their songs and already amaze us! (good job you guys!) Everyone is ready for The Wombats and as soon as the lights turn off everyone screams. The three guys from the band come on sage and start with their first song "Cheetha Tongue". The songs really pushes the crowd and we start making these little moves everyone makes when you are a bit unsecure but definetly hyped. This reserve doesn't hold very long and as soon as the second song starts (a song from an older album) really every person is jumping ,dancing. During the whole set Tord is moving arund the sage completly lost in the music showing that he's made for exactly this job. Murph is killing every high note and low note sings every song as if it's historischen favourite. And even Dan in the back seems to be jumping around on his drumms. Even when something isn't working with Murphs guitar during "Emoticons" these guys are super chill and Tord and Dan calmly play along with the crowd as we keep singing the "Ohhh" part over and over again. It got better with every song and I swear that the whole crowd felt like they had run a marathon from all the dancing! Especially after " Let's dance to Joy Division" and we all had gone completly crazy!

So in two sentences for the people who don't want to read that long paragraph above and just scrolled down here: It was AMAZING and I recommend to not dress with warm cloths because at least in my venue it was HOT after the first song had started and we all were dancing like crazy! If you are a Wombats fan I'd say you are dumb if you aren't going to a concert even though you have the chance to and that without meaning to be mean!

of 8 concerts this year , the bomwats was by far the best. riverstage has been crowned my favourite venue and was a perfect environment for their music , and matt’s voice is almost better live than in recorded tracks. the visuals were wild , with the backdrop thingy changing to suit every song perfectly and for a final song that drove the crowd insane , greek tragedy had everyone shouting the lyrics and a lot of people on shoulders , and even saw four or five people in wombat costumes come and dance on stage. the people i met were probably the nicest and most caring bunch i’ve been surrounded by so far and if the crowd had been any different it would have taken away from the overall satisfaction. played every song i had been dying to hear and the order of songs from the set was crafted with such intelligence that everything flowed so perfectly from one song to the next. support acts were amazing and so friendly , coming up to the merch tent for photos and just to chat and all the artists seemed genuinely happy to be a part of this. even following up with another concert the next day , nothing could top the wombats and i highly recommend seeing them more than once if you have the chance ! x

I first got into The Wombats after perusing the Top Forty and finding their latest single 'Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves) quite high on the charts. I was intrigued by the incredible album artwork, and instantly fell in love with their alternative, punky tunes. Three months later, my parents gave me permission to go to my first concert. I instantly thought of my new favourite band, and booked tickets to go with a couple of friends to see The Wombats. Fastforward to February 22nd 2012. I saw them at the O2 Academy Brixton, a large but popular venue that never fails to provide the right atmosphere for a show. The Wombats did not fail to deliver either. They played for over two hours, and all of it was explosive. They played the entirety of 'This Modern Glitch' (complete with lasers and confetti) as well as their most popular tunes from 'Love, Loss and Desperation', ending with the classic 'Let's Dance to Joy Division." Of course, not only was there a stellar performance, but their interaction with the crowd was impeccable. With Murph constantly ordering for another 'wall of death' and Tord crowd-surfing, The Wombats do not disappoint, and most certainly is not a band to miss.

Liverpudlian four piece The Wombats have amassed a huge following of their infectious indie rock over the years after they emerged as a driving force of the indie revival of the mid 00's. Their energetic performance was something that made this group stand out about the rest and the devotion to a live show is still packing out venues years later.

Although they only have two albums of material, the boys have crafted a setlist that is utter party. From the early single 'Kill The Director' an indie anthem in its own right, the crowd dance and jump along as both the band and crowd try and outdo each other with energy levels. The big cheers are reserved for 'Moving To New York' which is barked back word perfectly by the entire audience as the boys tear through this jumped up piece of pop/rock.

What The Wombats have is technical guitar music which you can dance to, a difficult sound to achieve. Closing track 'Tokyo' sees the band play complex instrumental with ferocious intensity yet the track is also so danceable that the crowd is lost within the music.

The Wombats were drop dead amazing!!! I can't even describe in words how much of a fun time I had. Their performance was just super passionate and awesome... Totally a band worth watching live. I loved their energy and how they even interacted with the audience. I felt like the usual two-hour long time frame for a concert wasn't enough for us. Went by way too fast.

Now to speak of the venue, it had its ups and downs. The good thing was that it was very clean and well maintained, easy to find, and parking wasn't too bad. The interior was really cool too. Since it was general admission, it was on a first come first serve basis to find spots. The extremely annoying part was that rude people would squeeze through and stand in people's way, blocking our original view. I think bouncers should keep their eyes out and do something about people like that. It was super rude and irritating.

prillashes’s profile image

They're amazing, that's honestly the best way to describe them.

They've always hyped the crowd up with so many things. Tord for example was basically jumping around playing his guitar all the time and barely stood still - when he stood still it was just to sing into his mic.

Between the songs Matthew either told some stories, introduced to the next song in a really interesting and partially comedic way - not just a boring "and the next song we're playing is ..." or just told some stories - in my case it was about how much they liked Munich - honestly LOVED that.

And now to the most important thing - their performance was straight awesome. They sounded so much better live than in their records in my opinion

That concert absolutely made my night yesterday and honestly can't wait to see the Wombats live again - hopefully soon

The Wombats are high-energy and tons of fun on stage. The lead singer is passionate and sounds just like the album live. The bassist dances around and keeps the crowd engaged. The music was perfect, they even had some moments of pure rocking out that were (seemingly) unscripted and in sync. The crowd was singing and dancing the whole time, you could tell there were plenty of true fans in the audience because there was no song that everyone couldn't sing along to.

The openers, Cheerleader and Life in Film were also really good and fit the feel of The Wombats. Cheerleader even came out after to sign autographs and take pictures, their engagement with the fans is what makes them stand out and a band to keep an eye on.

My second time seeing them - The Wombats put on a great show!

The crowd really gets into it although I have to say that the band, especially Matt, looked a bit tired compared to the last time I saw them. Might be that they're near the end of a US tour? They played both new and older stuff closing the encore with Lets Dance to Joy Division and then an instrumental, almost hardcore piece that seemed a bit out of place for them but was, actually, really good. The one thing they missed that I wished they had played was My First Wedding. But, I guess that's the luck of the draw.

Still, it's a high energy show that I loved and would love to see again!!!!

This concert was amazing. By far the best one I have been too. And the venue was incredible. So intimate. It felt like the band was sitting on your lap. The supporting bands were great and they owned the stage with their crazy moves. And the wombats were incredibly they were funny and spoke to the crowd as if we knew eachother. Their stage presence was amazing. They flaunted their guitar moves around the stage. The lights the animations and the props! Yes. They had props. Suddenly baloons flew out on stage and the mosh pit ate them up. Oh and the finishing song. Suddenly people in wombats costumes strutted in the stage. Overall INCREDIBLE NIGHT!

The Wombats at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC, Jan 15, 2018

Excellent sold out show. This is my 3rd Wombats' tour and it was great to see a mix of ages in the crowd and lots of enthusiasm. It was cool to be singing along with the teenager next to me. The setlist was evenly distributed between all 4 albums—and I appreciated this. All the songs were good, sound was excellent and they always bring the enthusiasm to their live shows. While I think the newer songs are a little overproduced, live they are great a little rougher and raucous. The only sad thing is that this will probably be the last time I get to see this band in a club.

After this stop, we'll continue travelling along one of the most beautiful roads in Australia until we reach the Macquarie Pass National Park . Welcome to the tropical rainforest of the country! We'll ascend towards this mountain while learning all the details of the flora that surrounds us.

If you've worked up an appetite, how about a sweet touch in the morning? To do so, we'll head to the famous Robertson Pie Shop , where you can pick up one of their award-winning pies.

Afterwards, we'll continue our journey into the Australian outback to see one of the country's great natural spectacles, the Fitzroy Falls.  Located in Morton National Park , these impressive waterfalls slide down enormous orange sandstone cliffs , creating an enchanting sight to behold. While strolling through this terrain, you'll also have the opportunity to see the different types of birds that fly over the area around Fitzroy Falls.

The day's next stop will be at Carrington Falls in Budderoo National Park . Eucalyptus forests, a 90-metre (295-foot) drop and a wealth of local flora and fauna await you in this Australian park.

To round off the day, we'll head into the Southern Highlands to see the friendly wombats and kangaroos in the wild . We'll learn about these typical Australian animals while enjoying a barbecue lunch . You'll also have free time to explore the area and say hello to these beautiful animals.

Finally, we'll return to the starting point and end the excursion after 10 hours of activity.

The Best Places to See Wombats in Sydney

Want to see some wombats in Sydney? Here are the best places to see wombats in the wild and even meet them at the zoo!

Table of Contents

These bulldozers of the bush look a bit like short, stocky bears. Some might even say they resemble a hairy pig. Whatever you compare them to, one thing is for certain: Wombats are adorable.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

Wombats are only found in certain parts of southeast Australia and are among the largest burrowing mammals in the world.

These chonky creatures are generally friendly, but have been known to bite and scratch as a protection method in the wild. Wombats also have a large boney plate in their rump. They can use this to pat down soil on the edges of their burrows, but wombats can also use the plate as a defensive tactic if something follows them home that shouldn’t. They can quite literally twerk predators to death against the roof of their burrows.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

As marsupials, momma wombats care for their young in pouches on their underside. But because they are burrowing creatures, the pouches open backward so they don’t fill up with soil while digging!

When wombats get the zoomies, they can run as fast as 25 miles  (40 kilometers) per hour. It’s truly a sight to behold.

Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo is a classic place to see wombats in Sydney. The zoo’s name is an Aboriginal word that means “beautiful water view.” It’s the perfect name for the zoo because you can see the famous Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge from most places on the property.

Taronga wombats

Taronga Zoo hugs the hilly shore in the north of Sydney Harbour on Bradley’s Head. You can drive to the zoo, take a bus from the city (boring!) or take a ferry straight from Circular Quay (the best option by far).

Skip the line on the day and buy your tickets in advance by clicking here . I recommend not purchasing any upsells with ferry tickets included because those are private ferries. It’s always cheaper to just take the public ones.

You have the chance to see two types of Wombats while at Taronga Zoo. The first is the southern hairy-nosed wombat. You won’t find these in the wild around Sydney, so if your trip Down Under doesn’t take you to the states of Victoria or South Australia, this is your best bet on seeing one.

However, wombats are most active in the nighttime. So if it’s really sunny and/or hot on the day you visit (as it often is in Australia), they might be asleep in their burrow.

Taronga wombats

Don’t worry! Because you can just head on down to where the common (bare-nosed) wombats live. Even if they are asleep inside, you can access a special wombat-viewing platform to take a peek inside their burrow. Don’t feel disappointed if they are sleeping, I promise they are even cuter that way.

Wildlife Sydney Zoo

Wildlife Sydney Zoo

This is a great place to see wombats in Sydney because you can see all of the other classic Aussie animals, too. If you are short on time in the Harbour City, you can still see the “Big 5” Australian animals without going bush. That’s a kangaroo, koala, wombat, saltwater crocodile, and platypus. Unfortunately, the resident saltwater croc passed away in 2022. The zoo is mourning his loss and making plans to replace him.

The Wildlife Sydney Zoo’s resident wombat is a sweet little bare-nosed guy named Ringo. I’ve seen him twice and I adore him. Once, I spent about 20 minutes standing outside his enclosure watching him bash his food bowl against a rock. Cheeky bugger.

You can buy tickets in advance and skip the line by clicking here .

This place also has one of the best gift shops in Sydney for wombat-related merchandise. I have five stuffed wombats and the biggest one (nearly the size of an Ottman) came from here.

Featherdale Wildlife Park

It’s very easy to get to Featherdale from Sydney with or without a car. The park is in Blacktown, which is about an hour from the city’s CBD. If you want to take a train , take the North Shore and Western line to Blacktown Station. When you arrive, look for bus stand E. Hop on the 729 bus for a 10-minute ride, which will drop you right outside Featherdale’s gates. If you aren’t sure where to go, there are plenty of station staff around to help you.

Featherdale wildlife park wombat

Like Taronga Zoo, Featherdale has both southern hairy-nosed and common (bare-nosed) wombats living there. However, the exciting thing about Featherdale is that you have an opportunity to meet the wombats! To have a wombat encounter in Sydney, you need to pay extra for a private animal encounter. I paid about $150 per ticket, on top of the price of admission.

While the animal encounters listed on the parks’ website vary, you can always reach out to the park ahead of your visit to see what you can purchase, per an official Trip Advisor post.

In 2018, I got to meet Fernando and my life changed forever.

Featherdale wildlife park wombat

Fernando’s mom was hit by a car when he was just a baby wombat in the pouch. He was rescued and brought to Featherdale to grow up safely. His primary carer was a big Abba fan, hence his name. I named my first stuffed wombat in his honor and every single one since has been a variation on the name. Fernan-dos, Fernan-tres, Fournando, Fivenando, etc.

Australian Reptile Park

You will need a car to see wombats at Australian Reptile Park, as it’s technically just a bit out of Sydney up on the Central Coast. However, it’s easily reachable whether you want to spend the entire day up there, or just an afternoon.

Despite its name, you can actually see lots of other animals in the park besides reptiles. When I visited, they had a beautiful Wombat named Hope who they took on a walk around the park! I got to pet her and she was very sweet.

wombats in Sydney

Beendeela Recreation Area

This is the best place to see wombats in the wild in New South Wales. Sure, there are lots of other places you could go and maybe see a wombat. But, if you are on a short timeframe and want to see one (let’s be honest, you will see dozens) 100% guaranteed, go to Bendeela Recreation Reserve.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

It’s a campground near Kangaroo Valley, just south of Sydney . You will need a car to visit Bendeela.

If you don’t have a car and still want to see wombats in the wild, you can take a wild wombat tour from Sydney with a tour company. Click here to buy tickets. I haven’t been, but the reviews are glowing.

I’ve been twice and both times I was overwhelmed by how many wombats I saw. They were everywhere.

The best time to see wombats at Bendeela is just before dusk. If you are not camping there , plan to arrive about an hour before sunset. It might take a while to see your first one, but as dusk draws nearer, more and more friends will start to emerge.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

If the front campground is too busy, walk back past the bathrooms and through the pedestrian gate. The back field has plenty of wombat burrows. You’ll see them marked with fences and caution flags. You can also find burrows down by the river.

Remember, as cute as the wombats are, they are still wild animals. If you are near a burrow, don’t go up to it. Instead, stay back and give the wombat plenty of room to emerge safely. Never try to pet a wild wombat.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

Important safety tip: When I worked for WIRES, I was in charge of installing wildlife warning signage on the roads of NSW. The area around Beendeela Recreation Area is a hotspot for road accidents with wildlife. Please, while visiting the area, especially around dawn and dusk, drive WELL BELOW the posted speed limit.

On both of my visits, I narrowly avoided hitting one of the wombats I was making a special visit to see, even while driving slowly. The wombats have terrible road safety skills and never look both ways, so we really have to watch out for them.

WIRES Sydney

What to do if you see a sick or injured wombat

Per WIRES on injured wombats:

Please do not approach any injured adult wombats in the wild.

Instead, call the WIRES Rescue Office 1300 094 737 or fill in the Rescue Form . The rescue office is open 24/7 and will tell you what to do next.

WIRES Sydney

If you have found a wombat that has recently been killed, perhaps hit by a car, please check for joeys. A joey is what we call a baby marsupial, like a wombat, kangaroo, or wallaby.  Look inside the mother’s pouch and also in the surrounding area as the joey could have been bumped out of the pouch, or it may be hiding in nearby bushes.

When I worked for WIRES during my time in Sydney, many of the wombats we had in care were actually orphans rescued from road accidents. So checking pouches is very important!

If you find the joey please keep it in a warm, dark, quiet place  (like wrapped in a towel or sheet in a ventilated carrier ) and contact WIRES immediately. As the joey will need immediate care, you can also transport it directly to your nearest vet, please still contact WIRES to let the team know which vet you are going to. This way, they can arrange for a carer to come to pick up the joey once it has been evaluated.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

You might also encounter a wombat that looks like it has mange. Mange is a highly contagious skin condition caused by mites, resulting in itchy sores over a wombat’s body, fur loss, and eventual blindness. Mange is spreading across Australia and currently, around 90% of wombat populations have it, putting this species at risk.

If you see a wild wombat with dry skin or patchy fur, call WIRES immediately to report it. Take note of the wombat’s exact location and where on the body it is affected.

Best Places to see Wombats in Australia

Wanting to see wombats outside of NSW? No worries! I have found these sweet furry chonks all over the country. Here is where to find wombats in the wild.

Best places to see Wombats in Victoria

If you are taking a holiday in Victoria, you are likely to see wombats. The best place in Victoria to see wombats is in Wilson’s Promontory National Park. They are everywhere! Especially in the campground, so be sure to stay until dark to get a glimpse.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

Best places to see Wombats in Tasmania

If you love wombats, you’ll love Tasmania as they are all over the place. Check out Cradle Mountain National Park or Maria Island for up-close encounters with these sweet creatures. The abundance of animals in the wild in Tasmania is the closest you’ll ever get to having a pet wombat.

Can you have a wombat as a pet?

No! Having a pet wombat is not only illegal in Australia (and most other countries!) but very harmful to the wombat and its overall health. Yes, I know we all dream of having a pet wombat, but if you really love wombats, you will leave them in the wild. If you see anyone advertising wombats for sale or asking to buy a wombat, either redirection them to conservation information or report the seller to the local police.

best places to see wombats in Sydney

Do Australians eat wombats?

Nope! Although this is a valid question since Australians DO eat kangaroo and you will often see it sold at local supermarkets. However, Australians do not eat wombats.

How fast can a wombat run?

Wombats can run at speeds up to 40 kilometers per hour which is just under retired sprinter Usain Bolt’s fastest recorded speed. These little furballs are quite stocky, so if you see one sprinting your way, get out of the way! A wombat impact to the shins can cause some major damage.
