Aside from the beautiful beaches, the resort is known for golf with a full 18-hole course (designed by iconic players Ernie Els and Vijay Singh) along with three different nine-hole courses located along the coastline. Each course has its own clubhouse and extensive golf facilities including a golf training academy, driving range, and restaurants.

6 Sizzling destinations for a short getaway from Singapore

Singapore has it pretty good: balmy climate, a heady blend of exciting cultures, and a gut-busting selection of sensational street food on every corner. It would be easy to stay put, but another huge benefit to visiting this sun-soaked city-state is its close proximity to other enthralling destinations.

To inspire a break away from the regular routine, we’ve selected six paradisaical places that are close enough for a quick escape. Whether it’s a light-speed dash around electrifying Kuala Lumpur, a breezy beach break in lilting Langkawi or a simple sojourn to heritage-laden Phnom Penh, there are short getaways from Singapore to suit most budgets and tastes.

Short getaway from Singapore: Kuala Lumpur

For quick and easy weekend getaways from Singapore, head to  Kuala Lumpur , a microcosm of Southeast Asian culture. You’ll find culture-rich neighbourhoods around a thriving financial centre.

Malay traditions are interwoven with Indian and Chinese, giving the city a vibrantly exotic feel that’s counterbalanced by impressive landmarks and tourist attractions like the lofty Petronas Towers. Street food is king here – be sure to seek out a  Kopitiam  for frothy hot tea made with condensed milk or a bit of  nasi lemak  (coconut-cooked rice).

For a change from the city’s buzz, jump on a train at KL Sentral to the jaw-dropping Batu Caves, where a 140-foot gold-flecked Murugan statue guards an ancient Hindu pilgrimage site.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Kuala Lumpur

Admire sweeping skyline views.

For location and luxury, the  Traders Hotel  is difficult to beat. Opposite the iconic Petronas Towers, this gigantic hotel complex boasts sweeping views over KL’s glittering skyline and is perfectly placed for exploring the fast-paced city.

Check into a spacious City View Suite, where a separate sitting room with a glass-topped desk is ideal for anyone mixing business with pleasure. Enjoy the complimentary breakfast, fresh fruits and free beverages in the exquisite Traders Club Lounge before wandering the kaleidoscopic shopping and entertainment hub of Bukit Bintang.

On your return to the hotel, cool off with a dip in the rooftop swimming pool or recline in the muscle-mending Jacuzzi before feasting on fragrant  mee mamak  (spicy fried noodles) at on-site Gobo Chit Chat.

Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Affordable opulence.

Those on a lower budget needn’t compromise on quality, as the five-star  Majestic Hotel  delivers affordable opulence in the heart of KL. Built in 1932, this stately colonial building houses 300 rooms in two distinct wings, both with 24-hour butler service.

Recline in the Majestic Wing’s refined Art Deco rooms and soak in a classic clawfoot bath or spring for the grandeur of a 100 square-metre suite. The contemporary Tower Wing offers polished chrome elegance and refreshing rain showers for washing off steamy KL days.

Savour cucumber sandwiches at English afternoon tea in the lavish drawing room, or awaken your senses with a North Coast Seaweed Sculpt in the decadent Majestic Spa. For dinner, dip into on-site restaurant Contango for an international buffet featuring velvety sashimi and crispy, sugary churros.

The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Autograph Collection

Short getaway from singapore: langkawi.

Langkawi  is the quieter, more laid-back neighbor of people-peppered Penang and the place to go for a relaxing getaway from Singapore. Officially an archipelago, Langkawi comprises 99 individual islands ringed by clear turquoise waters and wistful white sand beaches to while away the days.

Venture inland on Langkawi Island, the largest of the surrounding sand spits, and you’ll stumble across lush rice paddies and verdant jungles rich in wildlife. Be sure to indulge in a heavily piled platter of local Nyonya cuisine from street vendors who will carefully craft dishes passed down from generation to generation.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Langkawi

A decadent retreat on langkawi.

If you’ve set your sights on a decadent retreat, cast your eyes to the five-star  Danna Langkawi . Dripping in luxury, this hotel blends Mediterranean-inspired architecture with captivating natural surroundings to bring you accommodation fit for royalty.

For the ultimate indulgence, reserve a Princess Beach Villa. You can christen your stay with a dip in the glittering infinity pool, then wander through your private garden to the serene sands of Kok Beach. Enjoy a complimentary bubbly buffet breakfast at on-site Planter’s restaurant before visiting the acclaimed Danna Spa for a Traditional Malay Urut Massage. Take advantage of the resort’s kayaks for an afternoon on the gently undulating Andaman Sea before an evening of live music in The Verandah Lounge with an expertly handcrafted cocktail.

The Danna Langkawi - A Member Of Small Luxury Hotels Of The World

A langkawi hotel offering smooth sophistication.

A more affordable, yet equally alluring Langkawi option is Padang Matsirat hotel,  The Smith House . Smooth sophistication characterizes this boutique budget option, where you’ll find single room options for lone travelers. Wake up in the fluffy bedding of a signature Sassy Bed and step into your gleaming rain shower in the sleek en-suite.

Throw on your swimsuit and head to Seven Wells Waterfall, 20 minutes away by car, for an invigorating jungle swim in natural tiered pools dripping with tropical flora. Return to the hotel to refuel with tea at The Absolut – like smoked duck breast or a simple Greek salad – then top up your sun cream for an afternoon by the rooftop swimming pool. The ambient on-site library provides an ideal escape from extra-hot summer days, or you can cool down with a frozen margarita at The Absolum bar.

The Smith House

Short getaway from singapore: jakarta.

If you’re looking for where to go this weekend from Singapore, Java’s capital city of Jakarta blends old-world charm with blazingly bright modernity. This Indonesian behemoth is a head-spinner, offering everything from prestigious designer shopping malls and round-the-clock activities to culture-rich sites like the National Museum and stately Merdeka Palace.

Spend days getting lost in this labyrinthine city’s heart, or head north to Taman Impian Jaya Ancol for thrilling amusement parks and a spot of waterside gado gado (blanched veggie salad).

An urban sanctuary.

Amid the throb of Jakarta’s chaotic core is the five-star  Ayana Midplaza Jakarta . A self-proclaimed urban sanctuary, your cares will melt away the moment you set your bags down in this amenity-rich hotel. All rooms and suites offer lavish comfort, though check into an AYANA Suite for a truly unforgettable luxury experience.

Unwind in a cavernous marble bathroom before entertaining in the decadent dining area, or simply throw on your bathrobe and slippers to enjoy the peaceful comfort of your soundproofed abode. Keep your energy levels up with a sugar-laden  yuzu  float at on-site Japanese eatery Tsujiri, and round off a sun-soaked afternoon by the pool with a reviving reflexology treatment at the hotel spa.c

A stay at a laidback jakarta hotel.

A stay at the four-star  Hotel Kristal   proves that a short getaway from Singapore needn’t cost the earth. Located in laidback South Jakarta, a suave Studio Suite Room with stylish two-seater sofa is the ideal place to base yourself for a comfortable budget break.

If you sleep through the free buffet breakfast (easy to do when you’ve got a super soft king-size bed), prepare something satiating in your in-room kitchenette before taking a dip in the hotel’s palm-lined pool. Grab a finger-licking lunch of  nasi timbel  (banana leaf-wrapped rice) and scrumptious  soto betawi  (Jakarta beef soup) in the Orchid Restaurant, then venture out to nearby Ragunan Zoo to glimpse fearsome Sumatran tigers.

Short getaway from singapore: taipei.

For something completely different, a getaway from Singapore to subtropical Taipei might just be the thing. The Taiwanese capital has strong historic links to mainland China, as well as Japan owing to a period of enforced Japanese rule, all of which is reflected in the city’s surrounds and general culture.

There’s a wealth of things to discover here, including glorious botanical gardens with more than 1500 plant species, the hunger-inducing Shilin Night Market and colourfully quirky Yongkang Street. Don’t forget to order yourself an ice-cold bubble tea made with brown sugar while you’re in the country of its invention.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Taipei

A picturesque stay in taipei.

There are three fabulous Taipei Fullerton hotels in Taiwan’s picturesque capital, and the four-star  Taipei Fullerton – Maison North  is perhaps the most impressive. The design draws from the idea of a peaceful ‘vogue garden’, and you’ll have a choice of charmingly named rooms – like ‘Delightful’ and ‘Amazing’ – to set your bags down in. Check into a ‘Happiness’ room and enjoy sumptuously soft carpet beneath your bare feet as you brew complimentary boutique tea blends in your Wedgewood cup and saucer set.

You’ll want a long soak in your freestanding KOHLER bath, then fall straight into bed for sweet dreams on soft HILKER mattresses. When morning arrives, feast on an international buffet breakfast in the on-site restaurant. Or opt for breakfast out at a local grab-n-go where you’ll find crispy fried radish cakes dipped in delightfully gooey, savoury chilli sauce and served with fresh, hot soya milk.

Taipei Fullerton - Maison North

French-designed accommodation.

Closer to Taipei’s centre and more modest in its nightly fee is the French-designed accommodation,  The Riviera Hotel . The 24-hour reception staff can cover late check-ins if you’re arriving on a night flight, so you can settle into one of the 112 boutique rooms no matter the hour.

Unwind with a relaxed evening on a feather-soft queen-size bed with cable TV and something from the minibar, or a local snack from one of the 7-Elevens comically found on every block. Start the next day early with a dose of culture at nearby Taipei Fine Arts Museum, then meander back to the hotel’s Mediterranean Steak House to enjoy a meal of signature steak and crème brûlée.

At night, take an evening stroll to the nearby night market and sample local favourites like pungent  chou dofu  (stinky tofu) or thin, slightly crisped egg and scallion pancakes topped with melty cheese and sweet soya garlic sauce

The Riviera Hotel

Short getaway from singapore: hong kong.

Hong Kong , a popular stopover destination for travelers coming in and out of Southeast Asia, makes for a fabulous short getaway from Singapore. This former British settlement inevitably offers hints of its colonial past, while a distinctly Chinese flavor permeates throughout.

Families with young children will marvel at Hong Kong’s magical Disneyland theme park, while older visitors can soak up the local culture with a meander around eclectic shopping and nightlife district Tsim Sha Tsui. Be sure to catch the light show and fireworks at Victoria Harbour for an experience to remember.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Hong Kong

Asian-inspired elegance.

The five-star  Kowloon Shangri-La Hong Kong  will leave you speechless with its effortless Asian-inspired elegance and exquisite views over the iconic harbour.

Blow your budget on a giant Presidential Suite (worth it!) and pamper yourself with a bit of Jacuzzi time and free designer toiletries in your Italian marble bathroom. Select your sleeping accompaniments from an exclusive pillow menu, and call on your 24-hour butler for anything else you might require (macrons at midnight, perhaps?).

There are five acclaimed eateries and a health club within the hotel, so you can dine on pan-fried spotted grouper in the Michelin-starred Shang Palace before booking an opulent Golden Caviar deluxe treatment. A sunset cocktail in the Lobby Lounge will put the finishing touches on a truly indulgent day

Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong

An affordable hong kong hotel with sweeping harbour views.

An affordable Hong Kong break is easily achieved at three-star Kowloon accommodation,  The Inn Hotel Hong Kong . Take in sweeping harbour views from the calming colours of your comfortable room, and lean back on the crisp linen of your double bed to contemplate which sightseeing tour to book.

When you’re hungry, venture out to nearby Yokozuna for spicy bean paste-rich beef ramen, then browse the Jade Market’s technicolor wares for a souvenir. The afternoon will slip away as you wander the bustling streets of this culturally diverse neighbourhood, so catch a rejuvenating treat of ginger milk pudding at Yee Shun Dairy Company before retiring to the serenity of your room for a well-earned rest.

Hotel Ease Mong Kok

Short getaway from singapore: phnom penh.

Steal away from Singapore to dreamy   Phnom Penh , a soul-stirring blend of fanciful French colonial influences, striking Khmer-style architecture and ancient Buddhism. Wander alongside saffron-robed monks and a diverse crowd of international tourists as you take in the glimmering beauty of the Royal Palace. Pay your respects to those who have passed at the sobering Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, then bolster your knowledge of this fascinating country with a trip to the National Museum of Cambodia.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Phnom Penh

Cambodian luxury.

A touch of luxury awaits at the four-star  Plantation Urban Resort and Spa . A ravishing retreat in Phnom Penh’s popular Royal Palace Area, you’ll wonder why you didn’t visit sooner when you slip into the cerulean waters of the palm-lined swimming pool.

Opt for a Deluxe Poolside Garden Room and spend serene mornings on your private terrace with a steaming cup of complimentary java. The nearby riverside entertainment hub will tempt you out to explore, so you’ll soon be washing down fluffy blueberry pancakes with a cooling iced frappe at waterfront favourite Cafe Fresco. The hotel’s ethereal Plantation Spa will welcome you back from your wanderings with a Khmer herbal massage, and on-site culinary haven La Pergola will satiate your appetite with 36-hour slow-cooked pork belly.

Okay Boutique Hotel

Khmer-style decor.

The name of four-star   Okay Boutique Hotel   undersells this brilliant budget option in central Phnom Penh. Wake in the cool Khmer-style décor of your room and don complimentary slippers to take in the morning air on your private balcony or terrace. You’ll feast on a free buffet breakfast before consulting hotel staff for advice on touring the historic Killing Fields. For a more leisurely day, simply stroll 400 metres and marvel at the sparkling spires of the Royal Palace. The hotel’s on-site spa might inspire an afternoon of relaxation and holistic indulgence; just be sure to leave time to imbibe a classic cocktail on a sun-soaked lounger by the rooftop pool.

Morning

After landing at the world’s best airport, kickstart your trip at Singapore's newest shopping mall, Jewel Changi Airport . This futuristic dome houses over 280 dining and retail outlets, enabling you to kill time before checking into your hotel. Keen on trying local dishes the second you touch down? Head to food court Five Spice for local brands like Boon Tat Street BBQ seafood where you can enjoy Singaporean favourites like chilli crab and sambal stingray. If not, drop by NYC-born Shake Shack  and try local exclusives like the Pandan Shake – a pandan, coconut and vanilla ice cream shake topped with gula melaka crumble. Before you step out of the airport, get a headstart by shopping at  Foot Locker , Nike , and Pokémon Center Singapore .

Afternoon

After freshening up at the hotel, head to the Singapore Flyer for a 30-minute ride with amazing views of the cityscape. Pay a visit to the Esplanade  to admire its unique architecture which resembles the king of fruits, durian. This performing arts centre also hosts a plethora of performances, so get yourself a ticket if any piques your interest. Then walk over to the Merlion Park to get that money shot of you and Singapore’s iconic mascot, the Merlion. There are two statues here – the original 8.6-metre tall one that spouts water from its mouth, and a two-metre tall Merlion cub.

Evening

Take the train down to Telok Ayer MRT station to visit one of Singapore’s popular hawker centres, Lau Pa Sat , for dinner. It has several stalls selling local food, like Seng Kee Local Delights which serves up fried Hokkien prawn mee, and Chicky Fun which dishes out plates of Hainanese chicken rice. Retaining one of the oldest Victorian design structures in Southeast Asia, this historic building is also aesthetically pretty. So enjoy the elegance of this hawker while you enjoy your food.

Night

Since you’re in the CBD, it's time to bar hop. Aside from being the country’s financial and commercial district, this area has notable watering holes like the award-winning  Employees Only ,  Operation Dagger and 28 Hong Kong Street .  For tipple with a view, head up to rooftop bars 1-Altitude and Cé La Vi  or spice things up  at retro arcade bar Nineteen80 where you can play games like PacMan and Street Fighter while sipping on classics like Long Island Tea and Blue Lagoon.

Morning

  • Things to do

Start your day bright and early at Gardens by the Bay and visit the famed Flower Dome and Cloud Forest cooled conservatories for a diverse species of vegetation and floral gems. Continue exploring this 101-hectare nature park which comprises three waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central – all offering picturesque views of the skyline, to see more attractions like the Supertree Grove and OCBC Skyway, art sculptures, and the nearby Marina Barrage .

Afternoon

Saunter down to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel to get close-up shots of this iconic building before you cross over to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands . Be treated to dining options ranging from restaurants owned by world-renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen and CUT by Wolfgang Puck , to casual ones like Black Tap Craft Burgers and Beer , Yardbird Southern Table & Bar , and Din Tai Fung . After feasting, shop around at retail stores like Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Sephora, and Limited Edt Underground, or go on a relaxing sampan ride along the mall’s canal. There’s also the ArtScience Museum for museum lovers and a casino for the high-rollers.

Night

Have a meal at one of Singapore's best restaurants . The city is a hotspot for innovative chefs who are pushing the restaurant scene forward by leaps and bounds. There's Nouri , a new entry to this year's 50 Best Restaurants list, which offers boundary-blurring cuisine that celebrates the culinary diversity of the world. Or if you're up for Japanese, Lo and Behold's latest venture Esora will leave you in peaceful contentment. And for those among you who want to splash some cash, there's Zén , an offshoot of three-Michelin-starred Frantzen in Sweden, which serves Nordic meets Japanese cuisine.

Late Night

Clarke Quay is the place to be if you’re looking to do something after the sun goes down, specifically, party. Whether you’re a chill drinker or an avid raver, let loose and be wild at popular nightclubs like Zouk and F. Club , chug shots at dedicated shooters bar Chupitos , mini-golf at golf-themed bar Holey Moley or play at games at arcade bar Level Up .

Morning

  • Tiong Bahru

Sample a local breakfast at Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre . Located on the second floor, this hawker is packed with stalls selling popular local dishes, like chwee kueh, chicken rice, and fried kway teow, at reasonable prices. For a classic Singapore-style breakfast, give either of these a shot: chwee kueh – oily rice cakes accompanied with fried chye poh (Chinese dried radish) or a breakfast set which typically includes a cup of coffee, kaya (coconut jam) toasts, and soft-boiled eggs.

Midday

Venture off to your first ethnic neighbourhood, Chinatown . Learn more about the Chinese’s history, food, culture and religion at attractions like the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple , Chinatown Heritage Centre , Chinatown Food Street and Chinatown Complex . Visit the rooftop carpark at People’s Park Complex for instagrammable shots of you and the streets of Chinatown.

Afternoon

Take the train down to Little India for your next cultural stop and get a taste of Singapore’s Indian culture and history at the Indian Heritage Centre . Some of the popular Indian dishes are here, like at Komalas Vilas , Kailash Parbat Restaurant and Blue Jasmine . Get your retail therapy on at 24-hour Mustafa Centre , where you can find anything and everything for cheap, from clothing and accessories to souvenirs and electronics. For Insta pictures of and with murals, head to Clive Street, Upper Dickson Road, Kerbau Road, Hindoo Road, and Dunlop Street.

Evening

Lastly, experience the Malay culture at Kampong Glam (nearest MRT Station – Bugis ). Start from the landmark Sultan Mosque and the Malay Heritage Centre , then head out to the side streets where you’ll find lots of cafes and restaurants like I Am… and The Hangar , and art and murals, especially along Haji Lane.

Night

No trip to Singapore is complete without trying the durian. This fruit is known for its spiky appearance, strong odour and acquired taste. So, you’ll either indulge with pleasure or back away in disgust. We encourage you to be daring and sample our country’s unofficial fruit (you might like it, who knows?) at Geylang where stalls selling durian are plenty. For the uninitiated, there are different types of durians. Go for the Mao Shan Wang for a bittersweet taste, Black Thorn for sweet, and D24 for bitter.

Morning

Head along to theme park Haw Par Villa . But don’t expect roller coasters, bumper cars and carousels when you come here. This outdoor park features quirky and colourful statues depicting Chinese folklore, legends and history. It’s also rumoured to be haunted at night. Don’t miss the main attraction – the gruesome yet intriguing Ten Courts of Hell.

Midday

To learn more about the Little Red Dot’s history, make your way to the country’s oldest museum, the National Museum of Singapore . The exhibitions here focus on the nation’s history, like the Singapore History Gallery where it narrates the development of the country over the years and Modern Colony where it explores Singapore’s cosmopolitan nature as a British Crown colony from the late 1920s to 1930s.

Afternoon

A couple of kilometres away is the country’s largest art museum, the National Gallery Singapore . It oversees over 8,000 artworks, making it the biggest public collection of modern art in Singapore and Southeast Asia. This art museum is also housed in two national monuments – the former Supreme Court building and City Hall. If you’re keen, the exteriors of these two buildings are great for pictures for the ‘gram as well.

Evening

Walk over to St Andrew’s Cathedral to admire its neo-Gothic architecture and know more about its history, like how it was named after the patron saint of Scotland in homage to the Scottish community who donated to the building fund. Besides being the country’s largest and oldest Anglican cathedral, the St Andrew’s is also a national monument and the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Singapore.

Night

Grab dinner and drinks at the nearby Chijmes , a former Catholic convent school turned lifestyle spot. There are loads of restaurants, bars and cafe here, like Harry’s , Privé , The Berlin Bar & Restaurant, Giardino Pizza Bar & Grill, and Almost Famous Craft Beer Bar . Chill on the bean bags or hammocks at the mini lawn area and gaze in awe at the view of the Gothic-style chapel once you’re done with your meal.

Morning

  • Sightseeing
  • Bukit Merah

Looking forward to an adrenaline-filled day at Singapore’s state of fun, Sentosa ? Instead of taking the train to Harbourfront and then the monorail into the island, opt for a cable car ride from Faber Peak at Mount Faber. The ride will treat you to beautiful aerial views of Sentosa itself, the harbour, and some of the heartlands.

Midday and evening

Midday and evening

With so many things to do at Sentosa, expect to spend an entire day on this island. You can pop into Universal Studios Singapore to go on adrenaline pumping rides like the Battlestar Galactica, and Revenge of the Mummy or head to Adventure Cove Waterpark to go on thrilling slides. There’s also AJ Hackett where you can bungy jump off a 50-metre tower, and Mega Adventure Park where you zip-line over Siloso Beach . If you prefer not to tempt fate, head to the S.E.A Aquarium or Madame Tussauds Singapore , admire the tallest Merlion in the country or go on the Skyline Luge & Skyride .

Night

There’s an array of dining options at Sentosa you could go to for dinner, like Chili’s American Grill & Bar , Din Tai Fung , Hard Rock Cafe , and Fratelli Trattoria. But if you prefer heading elsewhere, try Maxwell Food Centre . This hawker has a reputation for its cheap delicious food, like the Hainanese chicken rice from Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, and congee from Zhen Zhen Porridge.

Morning

  • Parks and gardens

Be at one with nature at Singapore Botanic Gardens . This 160-year-old tropical garden features more than 10,000 species of floral and was honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. Stroll through this 82-hectare park to take in the best of horticulture set in a lush landscape.

Afternoon

It’s time you head to our country’s major shopping district, Orchard Road. Shop until you drop at malls like ION Orchard , Paragon , Ngee Ann City , 313@Somerset , Orchard Central and Plaza Singapura . Items on sale range from apparel and cosmetics to tech and furniture and brands include both luxury and casual, and international and local. Once you’re done, make your wallet feel better at Bugis Street . This shopping area out of Orchard is known for its cheap bargains, with items going as low as $5 and under. You can also journey to the east (Jurong) to shop at outlet mall IMM where brands like Kate Spade and Coach sell products at a discounted price.

Night

Cab down to Dempsey Hill to explore the array of dining and nightlife offerings. You’ll have the option to tuck into local delights at various restaurants like Jumbo Seafood , Long Beach Seafood, and Samy’s Curry, or check out RedDot Brewhouse for a hearty menu of burgers, charcoal grill, and beers.

Morning

End your final day with a trip to the country’s three zoos – Singapore Zoo, River Safari and Night Safari – all of which are unique in terms of its animals and exhibits. Beginning at the Singapore Zoo , a visit here will treat you to over 300 species of animals, of which 34 percent are considered to be threatened. Animals here include the Bornean orangutan, cotton-top tamarin, chimpanzee, African lion, and brown lemur. It also has animals shows like the Splash Safari Show where you get to witness the antics of the California sea lion.

Afternoon

The River Safari is the newest addition among the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. It’s also Asia’s first and only river-themed wildlife park. At this 12-hectare zoo, you can find over 400 types of plants and 240 species of aquatic and terrestrial animals, including threatened animals like the giant panda, manatee and Mekong giant catfish. Other highlights include the Amazon River Quest boat ride where you come face-to-face with some 30 wildlife species from the Amazon River, and a 15-minute Reservoir Cruise that travels along the Upper Seletar Reservoir.

Night

The Night Safari – as its name suggests – only operates at night. Explore its seven geographical zones on foot via its four walking trails – Leopard Trail, Fishing Cat Trail, East Lodge Trail, Wallaby Trail – or by tram. While at it, observe close to 100 species of animals in their natural habits here, like the spotted hyena, white African lion, sloth bear and clouded leopard.

One Week in Singapore: Massive Bucket List & Travel Tips

1 week travel destinations from singapore

Oh hello, friend. Today I’m taking you to the magical land of Singapore showing you all the unique things to do, see, and eat. One week in Singapore is my recommendation for those wanting to experience the ins-and-outs of this city/country. High-five if you’re thinking the same.

Yes, Singapore is both a city and a country. It’s one of the most wonderful, magical, shiny and new places I’ve been. Between the food, architecture and English accents I’m basically in love and low key wishing someone would give me a visa to live out my days in this enchanting city.

Consider this post your personal travel guide. I’ve made a 7-day itinerary for you which includes a ton of travel tips such as: when to go, where to stay, and how much money you can expect to spend.

This is my longest post to date with great value sure to leave you well prepared for such a trip. So grab some wine and get comfy.

Psst. . . Looking for more tips for your trip to Singapore? Check out my other posts.

Is One Week in Singapore Too Long?

Not at all. I recommend a week in Singapore. There are dozens of monuments, museums, beaches, food, theater and more to enjoy. You can’t possibly see it all over a weekend.

Given the amount things I’m going to share with you, 3-days simply won’t cut it unless you are planning to see only the most popular attractions (i.e. Gardens by the Bay).

If that’s the case then I urge you to extend your stay so you don’t miss the many wonders of the Garden City.

How Much Money Should I Take to Singapore for a Week?

It’s time we had the big money talk. Before my trip, I exchanged $500 worth of Singapore Dollars (SGD). I knew they were a credit card friendly city, so I was not concerned about withdrawing a ton of cash. I mainly use cash for market shopping and dining at hole-in-the-walls.

Including cash, here is my total spend for 1-week in Singapore in USD:

Dining, Shopping, Attractions: $1,212 (this is a combination of cash and credit card spend)

Hotels: $2,246 (we stayed at three different hotels which i breakdown here ).

TOTAL FOR TWO PEOPLE: $4,170

Your budgeted Singapore travel cost per day should be $595 for two people. Yeah, I know! That’s a pretty penny. Again, this can all be modified. Let this reflect the max if you’re dining and staying at fancy places for a week straight.

Of course, you should always keep a close watch on exchange rates leading up to your trip. When I was there, the exchange rate meant 25% off whatever the price in SGD was (i.e. 100 SGD equals 75 USD).

If you don’t have the XE Currency app , I recommend you download it. It’s free and updated in real-time.

Best Time to Visit Singapore

Seeing as Singapore is only 1 degree from the equator the weather hardly changes year-round making any month a good one.

We came during the so-called monsoon season, but in the 7 nights we were in Singapore, it did not rain a drop. It’s considered low season so prices are cheaper, therefore, I recommend visiting Singapore end of July through August.

Also happening in July is the Great Singapore Sale and Singapore Food Festival. We caught the food festival. Tons of vendors all around with every cuisine imaginable.

One Week in Singapore: 7-Day Itinerary

Yay! Now that all the important things to know are out of the way, I can finally share my 7-day itinerary. I made sure to include top and lesser-known attractions, as well as, some funky bars. We all know the Seeking Neverland community loves nightlife.

one week in singapore

Day one is a travel day – usually spent figuring out directions and settling in. We arrived in the afternoon and by the time we found our hotel and unpacked it was happy hour in the lobby. We grabbed a glass of wine followed by dinner at Vatos . Of course, I found a Mexican restaurant on day one.

If you’re new to this blog, then you should know I love Mexican food. No matter where I visit in the world, I love searching for a Mexican restaurant. You would be surprised where good food turns up.

With that being said, the first restaurant recommendation in Singapore is Vatos .

We stayed at the super cute Naumi Hotel . It’s a boutique hotel with resort-like amenities. From the bar/restaurant downstairs to the rooftop pool offering incredible views of the city and historic Raffles Hotel.

Getting from the airport to our city center hotel

Getting to our hotel from the airport was relatively simple. We used the airport WIFI to figure out what metro station was closest to our hotel.

The MRT line runs from terminal 2 to all parts of the city. We spent $2.50 for a 1-way ticket and $20 for a 3-day MRT tourist pass

Once settled into our hotel, we walked across the street to 7/11 and purchased a SIM card. It was a 7-day 100g card for 12 Singapore Dollars. It’s so much cheaper than the airport with more data.

Since my phone is unlocked I hotspot the WIFI with my boyfriend. You can do the same if you’re looking to save money. Split the cost of one and hotspot.

english afternoon tea in singapore

We try to get a good night’s rest after the travel day so our first plans were not until the afternoon, well brunch’ish time. We started our day at the luxurious Intercontinental Hotel for afternoon tea.

Afternoon Tea at the Lobby at the Orchard,  Intercontinental Hotel

SGD 108 will buy you afternoon tea for two people and champagne. You can enjoy an afternoon in a lavish room with a live grand piano sipping on Singapore heritage tea and endless amounts of scones and ice cream.

Tea will begin with your choice of tea or coffee and an array of scones and jam. Following are what I call the savory side of the menu with finger sandwiches, ratatouille quiche (my personal favorite) and risotto.

Continuing is the tray of gorgeous and delicious desserts of all sorts from chocolate pralines to mango mouse cake. I believe the menu changes by season so it’s best to check their website for the most current menu.

Explore the Colonial District by Foot

If you decide to stay at Naumi, then your first stop on this walking tour will be the Raffles Hotel. This historic hotel is named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles – the founding father of modern-day Singapore. I love the Victorian-style architecture and crisp white paint job. It’s a beauty.

Inside you will find hotel rooms, restaurants, and a botanical garden. While it’s easy to splurge here, try to hold off because I do I have an amazing bar for you. Keep reading.

The next stop is Chjimes (the j is silent). A national heritage site with gorgeous Gothic Architecture. Today, Chjimes is a retail and business space but you may recognize it from the wedding location in Crazy Rich Asians. I get chills every time I watch the scene when the bride steps into the water aisle. GOALS!

Old Hill Street Police Station (Central Business District)

This building is a former police station and now home to various businesses. The real draw is the outside aesthetic. It’s the most colorful building in Singapore attracting photographers daily.

The building is located in the central downtown core. There is a bus stop right here which makes getting to and from here super easy.

Stroll Through Chinatown

Though it was built in the early 2000s, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple has ample opportunities to learn about the rich history with tons of art and artifacts throughout. Admission to inside is free, as well as, tours which last around 2-hours.

Get Your Drank On At These Unique Bars

Not far from Yellow Pot are some awesome bars you cannot miss.

Jr. Pocket Bar Speakeasy Tiki Ba r that has maybe 20 seats and that’s it.

Tippling club was voted one of the best bars in asia and i can see why. this bar is unique in the sense that rather than picking a cocktail based on what you think would taste good, you order based on smell. before ordering, they deliver a stand with dozens of test tubes of different fragrances. whichever one you like they create a cocktail around..

Morning tour of Little India

If you want some good Hawker Centers then Little India is where you want to be. It’s one of the oldest parts of the city and houses great food options. Of course, I went for the colorful shophouses. It’s different from other districts in that the Indian culture is very much alive here. Chinese and British influence is found all around Singapore, but not as much in Little India.

harry potter cafe in singapore

Lunch at Harry Potter Cafe, Platform 1904

Platform 1904 is a must for Potterheads like myself. They did a great job bringing you into the wizarding world from the decor right down to the menu. They have a rack of school uniforms so make sure you dress the part before sitting.

The menu was far better than I was expecting. Brace yourself, they have Hagrid’s British Afternoon Tea every day from 2-6 pm for SGD 55 per person. We, however, opted for the set lunch menu which included soup, salad, and main dish. My order consisted of:

Green’s from Hagrid’s Pumpkin Patch

Cream of butternut squash. it was the soup of the day., vegetarian aglio olio, mr. lich’s flaming brew magical cocktail.

Fort Canning Tunnel

Fort Canning was one of the most interesting spots I visited. I went there for an Instagram photo but when I took a step back I realized how unique it truly was. Why make a basic walking path in a park when you can dig a hole and built a spiral staircase alongside it?

Shopping on Orchard Road

Orchard Road is like Oxford Street in London. Home to every type of brand imaginable. To give you some perspective they had a 7-story Crate & Barrel. These malls are gigantic.

After you shop, take a breather and visit the photo-worthy Library @ Orchard. This library is super techy and modern – unlike many libraries, I visit. That’s not saying a lot. Since college, I think I’ve been in a library only when traveling.

top things to do in singapore

For our last three nights, we decided to check in to the ritzy Marina Bay Sands. You don’t have to but if you have room in the budget it’s totally worth it. For a look at my stay, you can read or watch here. We checked in early so that we had time to explore the city and be back by the evening to enjoy our hotel.

Day rage warning, the first stop is easily the most incredible bar I’ve ever been to.

atlas bar singapore

Sit, Sip, and Enjoy Atlas Bar

Never have I ever been to a more swanky bar. Atlas is an art deco masterpiece from the ground up. They house the largest gin collection on the world with over 123 from the US and 316 from the UK among other countries.

If you plan to come after 6 pm they do have a strictly enforced dress code. Women and Men both need to be dressed to impress. No shorts or sandals.

alternative guide to singapore

Bugis Street Village

Bugis Market is like many of the markets you will see in other parts of Asia. If you enjoy street food and bargains this market is not to miss. Make sure to walk around the left side of the market if you’re facing the front, to the colorful shophouses.

After shopping, we headed back to our hotel to catch the show and dinner. I’m pretty sure we were starving at this point.

Catch the 6 pm Marina Bay Sands Water Show

Similar to the water show at Disneyland’s California Adventure. I liked it. It’s a huge water show that takes place in the Marina.

If you’re on the Marina Bay Sands side you will see if from behind. If you want to be in front head to the Fullerton Hotel across the way, or better, take a boat tour and watch the show on the water.

Dinner at the Hotel Buffet

The buffet was delicious. I honestly don’t like buffets but at a 5-star resort, buffets are well maintained. Besides the food court in the mall, the Buffet is the best bang for your buck. You do need to make a reservation or risk waiting in the standby line.

Visit the Marina Bay Sands Shopping Mall

This is more than a mall. Here you will find the only casino in Singapore and Marquee nightclub . Seeing as I’m from Las Vegas, I found the casino to be underwhelming. For starters, there are no bars inside. Everyone is serious and quiet. Yet, it was still interesting to walk in and see the differences for myself.

one week in singapore

The best part of the mall is the food court . Just like everything else in the city, the food court is beautiful and offers tons of variety if you enjoy Asian cuisine. There is also a giant light sculpture that resembles the same one inside of TeamLabs in Tokyo. The reason is that it was designed by the same people.

Walk around the Marina Bay starting at Helix Bridge

You can get some pretty sweet views of the Marina Bay and downtown core from the Helix Bridge. They have a few lookout spots along the way. Make your way towards Merlion Park.

If you don’t want to make the walk, they do have boat tours that will take you around the Marina. I want to say it cost SGD 7. We were going to do the tour but missed the last one and didn’t feel like waiting.

top attractions in singapore

Merlion Park

There are technically eight Merlion statues found around Singapore, but the Marina Bay location is the largest and most photographed. This hybrid statue represents two things: the lion head represents the old name of Singapore which was the “Lion City”, and the fishtail represents their beginning as a fishing village. It faces east because it’s feng shui

Cloud Forest and Flower Dome

Cloud Forest & Flower Dome

These are the paid attraction at Gardens by the Bay. You should plan to spend at least an hour in both places, so if you intend on seeing the Garden Rhapsody show, you will want to time these attractions right.

If you’re hungry, there is an adorable cafe inside the Flower Dome that serves tasty vegetarian meals using fresh herbs and plants from the garden.

P.S. If you flew Singapore airlines you get a discount so make sure to show your boarding pass at the ticket counter.

Sunset at the Marina Bay Sands Pool

Day 6 was the ultimate pool day. We started our day enjoying coffee poolside. Afterward, we freshened up and headed out to explore the last neighborhood on our bucket list.

one week in singapore

This photo pretty much sums up the Kampong Glam district. Colorful and eclectic.

Explore Kampong Glam

The Mulsim-Malay neighborhood Kampong Glam is unique in that you can find street art everywhere. Graffiti is technically illegal in Singapore, but this neighborhood has murals everywhere. If you’re looking for an alternative side of Singapore, this is a lesser-known area not to miss.

The Sultan Mosque is the most popular landmark here. It looks straight out of Aladdin. Although tourists are not allowed inside because it is an active mosque you can still pass by during their prayer and enjoy the music from the outside.

craft beer singapore

Unicorn Burps local craft beer found at Good Luck Beerhouse in the center of Haji Lane.

Make sure you walk down Haji Lane and stop by Good Luck Beerhouse – a dim sum and local craft beer bar. I got the Unicorn Burbs Pilsner. So good I got it twice. Spend time chatting beer with the staff. That’s what traveling is all about in my opinion so make some friends. Many of the spots on this list were recommendations from locals.

Sunset back at the pool

If you stay at the Marina Bay Sands you absolutely have to experience sunset at the pool. We got an early dinner at Lavo then headed to the pool for sunset. It was a perfect ending to our day.

View from our lounge at Yotel Air.

For the last day, we checked-in to the Yotel Air at The Jewel at Changi Airport . The joke of the day was how we went from a large room at Marina Bay Sands to a teeny-tiny room at Yotel Air. Talk about falling off our high horse. But in actuality, it was a smart choice, because the Jewel has a ton to do.

Food & Drinks

We hopped around the food courts inside Jewel. They had three but our favorite was the top floor. Here you will find another craft beer bar offering Tiger Beer.

one week in singapore

Across from the Tiger Bar is Herit8ge. You have to try Gik . Gik is the world’s first blue wine. I’m not entirely sure how they get it blue but I know it’s not food coloring or anything like that. Taste is between a wine and dessert wine.

Attractions

Notice the people walking high above on the glass skywalk? That costs money to access.

The main attractions at Jewel are the mirror maze and canopy park but in actuality, there are tons more attractions here such as a cactus garden and bouncing sky net. You can bundle all these and more for SGD 71 per person. Visit the official site for more information.

The main free attraction here is the massive waterfall (aka the largest indoor waterfall in the world). Located inside Forest Valley you can enjoy walking paths and free show happening every hour from 7:30 pm to 12:30 am.

Other Notable Things to Do

See why you need a week in Singapore? I got around but still didn’t see it all. Here are a few notable mentions that I wanted to visit but did not have the time:

Art and Science Museum : We decided to skip this since we went to the one in Tokyo on the same trip. They are different in their own ways and a must if you’ve never experienced immersive art like this.

Rainforest Illumination : An enchanting night walk at the Singapore Zoo.

Operation Dagger : A speakeasy bar with rave reviews from locals.

Skinny’s Lounge : On the flip side, Skinny’s Lounge is one of the few dive bars in Singapore. I’m bummed we didn’t make it.

Haw Par Villa : This odd park will give you all kinds of feels. If you’re looking for an alternative attraction in Singapore, your answer is here.

Magical Dinner for Harry Potter Fans : We can all thank Jeratch for becoming the best host ever on Airbnb Experiences. She hosts a Harry Potter-themed dinner which consists of themed meals and house sorting services if you’re unsure. The entire dinner lasts 3.5 hours and sells out super fast. That’s my excuse.

One of the top things to do here is to visit People’s Park , a four-hectare cultural theme park right in the heart of the city. Some highlights include local art sculptures, a mini forest, and a giant durian dome — Davao’s famed fruit.

Day 1 of your 3 Day Singapore Itinerary

SuperTree Grover at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

Spend the first day of your three days in Singapore in the most iconic districts: Downtown Core, Chinatown and Marina Bay – but first, immerse yourself in nature at the city-center retreat of Fort Canning Park.

Each featured Singapore district could take as little as an hour to explore on foot, but only without making stops. We recommend using the provided links to each of the district walks to help plan your Singapore day one tour itinerary.

Fort Canning Park

Flags flying in Fort Canning Park in Downtown Singapore

Located in the heart of the city is Fort Canning Park – and it marks the first stop on your Singapore trip plan. The small hill has played a big role in the history of Singapore. It was home to kings in the 14th century, British Army Barracks in the 19th century and is the site where Singapore surrendered to Japan in 1942. Shaded trails meander through the forested hill that is sprinkled with relics from the past: The Battlebox, Gothic Gate and Fort Canning Lighthouse shouldn’t be missed!

Historic lighthouse at Fort Canning Park in downtown Singapore

Informational plaques are found throughout the area to help visitors better understand the history of Fort Canning Park. Strolling among the tropical plants and learning about the city’s past should definitely be included in your Singapore Three-day Itinerary!

Singapore Downtown Core

Downtown Singapore and Boat Quay

In the Downtown Core, sleek high-rises tower over ornate temples and traditional dwellings that sit along the Singapore River. The district is the financial center of Singapore, which grew from the colony established on the banks of the river in 1823 by Sir Stamford Raffles and the British East India Company. As the location marks the beginning of modern Singapore, it’s a great place to kick off your Singapore Travel Itinerary!

View of The Fullerton Hotel, Singapore

Museums, monuments and mementoes from the past are found throughout the Singapore Downtown Core. Top sights include the iconic Raffles Hotel, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Boat Quay, Cavenagh Bridge, Fullerton Hotel and Yueh Hai Ching Temple.

Discover the Singapore Downtown Colonial Sights on foot using our Singapore Downtown Core Walking Tour .

Streetview of Raffles, Singapore

Top Tip : Before you set off on your Day One Singapore Itinerary, make sure you are prepared for the weather! Wear comfortable shoes , slather on the sunscreen – and bring a hat or umbrella for shade. Staying hydrated is essential – so make sure to bring a bottle of water , too!

Singapore Chinatown

Chinatown Heritage Center in Singapore

Long before Singapore became Singapore, Chinese people inhabited the island. However, during the development of the colony by Sir Raffles in the mid-1800s, a specific area was designated for the Chinese people to live and work – and that district remains today as Chinatown.

Although the intent was to segregate society, there was much diversity within Chinatown, evidenced by the different houses of worship – a Hindu temple, Muslim mosque, Buddhist temple and Christian church are all just steps apart.

Singapore Chinatown lit up at night

Today, although the boundaries have shifted and the dynamics have changed, the Singapore Chinatown history remains. Preserved shophouses and traditional medicine shops can be found throughout the district. The scent of sizzling meat and mouth-watering spices hangs heavy in the air, while smoky incense burn at popular Singapore temples and shrines.

Use our Singapore Chinatown Self-Guided Walking Tour to make sure you see the best sights!

Neon signs in Chinatown Singapore

Top Tip: Visiting Chinatown should be on every Singapore Trip Itinerary – if not for the history, then for the food! There is so much fabulous food in Chinatown – you could create an entire Singapore Food Itinerary in this one district alone. We recommend eating lunch at one of the Hawker Centers in Chinatown to get a taste of the local cuisine.

Marina Bay Singapore

Water sprays from mouth of Merlion at Marina Bay in Singapore

Marina Bay is Singapore’s modern, man-made marvel – and an absolute must-see on your Singapore tour plan. The entire district sits on reclaimed land and the stunning architecture creates a surreal atmosphere.

The center of attention is the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel , but it is far from the only attraction at Marina Bay. The water-spouting Merlion, SuperTree Grove of Gardens by the Bay and the Singapore Flyer are other top Marina Bay sights.

SuperTree Grove and OCBC Skyway at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

Visiting some of these attractions will certainly add to your Singapore sightseeing cost, but for those determined to budget travel in Singapore, there is much to see at Marina Bay for free.

Follow our self-guided walk of Marina Bay Singapore Attractions to discover the best of the vibrant area!

Marina Bay Sands Light Show, Singapore, SG

Top Tip: In Marina Bay, there are two nighttime laser light shows: Spectra Light Water Show at Marina Bay Sands and Garden Rhapsody Light Show at Gardens by the Bay. Both shows light up the Singapore sky at least two times every night – so plan correctly and you can watch both!

Day 2 of your Singapore 3 Day Itinerary

Street art in Kampong Glam on Bali Lane in Singapore

On Day 2 of Singapore in three days, take a walk in the treetops of Southern Ridges, then discover more history and vibrant culture in some of Singapore’s best neighborhoods – Kampong Glam, Bugis and Little India.

Southern Ridges Park

Wooden-planked bridge, Henderson Waves, at Southern Ridges in Singapore

Located west of the Singapore city center, Southern Ridges is a 6mi/10km stretch of green space that connects Mount Faber Park to Hort Park. Trails can be accessed on the forest floor, but walking along the elevated path gives visitors a birds’ eye view of the forest canopy and a glimpse at some of the iconic Singapore skyline. The uniqueness of the park makes it one of the top places to see in Singapore!

View of modern architecture from Henderson Waves in Singapore

A highlight of the Southern Ridges walk is Henderson Waves – a 72ft/36m high pedestrian bridge modeled to look like the waves of the sea. The park feels miles away from the bustle of Singapore and offers an excellent chance to view the natural flora and fauna of the region. We saw many birds and butterflies on our walk…but didn’t spot any monkeys.

Kampong Glam

Main Street, Kampong Glam, Singapore

In Raffles’ plan of division, Kampong Glam was designated for native Malays and Muslims – and, today, it’s one of the top tourist spots in Singapore.

Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor, who signed the treaty with the British East India Company in 1819 to establish the colony and trading port, resided in Kampong Glam. As the district evolved over the decades, it attracted other ethnic groups, and grew into a multicultural community (although, it is often still referred to as the Singapore Muslim Quarter).

The area boasts a few top sights, a multitude of trendy coffee shops and traditional fabric and carpet stores. When visiting Kampong Glam during your 3 Days in Singapore Itinerary, be sure not to miss the district highlights (outlined below). Use this link to Google Maps for a Kampong Glam and Bugis Singapore Walking Route or join a highly rated Singapore day tour – like this one – that includes food tastings!

Malay Heritage Center

Main Building of the Malay Heritage Center, Singapore

Established in 2005, the Malay Heritage Center aims to educate visitors on the history of the Malay people through six permanent exhibits. The building that houses the museum was part of the Sultan’s palace complex and was completely renovated in 2011-12. (Fee to enter.)

Sultan Arts Village

Street Art, Sultan Arts Village, Singapore

At the southeast entrance/exit to the Malay Heritage Center (opposite the fountain), is the Sultan Arts Village. The small building houses a few artist galleries and features expressive wall murals and graffiti art on the walls around it. Perhaps not a must-see for all travelers, but a delight for fans of street art.

Sultan Mosque

Exterior view of the Sultan Mosque, Singapore

Designated a National Monument in Singapore in 1975, the Sultan Mosque (or Masjid Sultan) dates to the year 1928 – and has changed little since then. With large golden domes, it’s almost impossible to miss. The mosque remains an important place of worship for Muslims, but is open to all to visit. Guests not appropriately dressed will be loaned clothing to wear (for free). Informational displays are set up at the back of the mosque and friendly staff are available to answer questions.

Arab Street & Haji Lane

Shop- and cafe-lined Haji Lane in Kampong Glam in Singapore

Two colorful streets – Arab Street and Haji Lane – run parallel to each other in Kampong Glam. Lined with restored shophouses that host hip cafes, restaurants and bars, these two streets offer some of the best sightseeing in Singapore and are a highlight for many visitors.

Eating in Kampong Glam

char kway teow from stall 91 Fried Kway Teow Mee

Located in the vicinity of Kampong Glam is the Golden Mile Food Centre . Slightly out of the way, we think it is well worth including in a Singapore 3 Day Itinerary. We recommend trying the much-raved (and 2016 Michelin Guide-mentioned) char kway teow from stall 91 Fried Kway Teow Mee . With only one dish available (the broth of which takes hours to make), the long line is sure to move quickly – and can be ordered S, M or L. Need a break from Asian cuisine? Go to Burgs’, where they cook up tasty burgers and fries at inexpensive (for Singapore) prices.

Skyline of Bugis, Singapore

Some might be familiar with the name Bugis Street – a movie of the same name depicts the lives of Singapore transgenders and prostitutes who frequented the area from the 1950s until the 1980s. However, since the redevelopment in the 1980s, none of the exotic sex culture remains. Instead, there are many other things to do in Bugis Singapore for visitors, like visiting the shopping malls and temples at the heart of the district. Below, we have outlined the top Bugis Singapore sights to see.

Bugis Village

Comprised of more than 30 restored pre-war shophouses, Bugis Village features compact stalls selling everything from clothing to souvenirs to food. The market is a place for both bargains and bartering – and visiting is one of the top things to do in Bugis.

Top Tip : Visitors more interested in shopping at a typical mall should head into Bugis Junction Shopping Center .

Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple

Exterior of Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, Singapore

The Buddhist Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple was built in the late 1800s and survives today as a place of worship. Devotees believe praying to Kwan Yim (Goddess of Mercy) will bring them good luck, encouraging many faithful worshipers to visit the temple.

Sri Krishnan Temple

Next to the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Buddhist Temple is the Sri Krishnan South Indian Hindu Temple, which was built in 1870. As a fine example of Singapore’s acceptance of multiple religions, worshipers of both temples will often visit the neighboring temple with offerings.

Little India in Singapore

Colorful and historic House of Tan Teng Niah in Little India in Singapore

Little India is the third district you will visit on Day 2 of your trip in Singapore. Temples, spice shops and flowers team together to make Little India one of the most colorful districts in Singapore – but as is true in the many labeled ethnic districts in Singapore, the area isn’t solely Indian.

The neighborhood was first developed in the 1840s when a racetrack was built at nearby Farrer Park, attracting Europeans to the area. Shortly after, the Indian-run cattle trade, which took place along the Serangoon River, was taking hold and many Indian immigrants moved to the district.

Colorful building line the streets in Little India in Singapore

Today, many historic sights, temples and Indian shops can be found along Serangoon Road. Below, we highlight the must-see sights in Little India. Use this link to Google Maps for a Little India Singapore Walking Route.

Tekka Centre

Silk Dresses, Tekka Centre, Singapore

The Tekka Centre is a hawker center, wet market and fabric store all under one roof. The ground floor features food stalls – many of which serve classic Indian dishes. On the second floor, shoppers will find an array of fabrics, including beautiful silk used to make saris.

Tan Teng Niah

Detail of the Tan Teng Niah, Singapore

The Tan Teng Niah house, built by a Chinese businessman in 1900, is one of the last Chinese villas remaining in Little India. Although the colorful house is what attracts many visitors to seek out the historic abode, it was originally painted plain white.

Sri Veramakaliamman Temple

View of Sri Veramakaliamman Temple, Singapore

Dating to 1881, Sri Veramakaliamman Temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Singapore. An ornate and detailed tower (gopuram) rises over the main entrance and inside are a number of shrines.

Mustafa Centre

Rooftop Garden, Mustafa Centre, Singapore

Open 24 hours a day with seamless boundaries between two mega-department stores, Mustafa Centre offers one of the more unique shopping experiences in Singapore. Shelves are piled high with designer brands, electronics, jewelry and toys – most at discount prices.

Pro Tip : Make your way to the rooftop garden for the water walkway and views of Little India.

Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple

Detailed tower at Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Little India Singapore

A national monument since 1978, the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple was built in 1855 and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The striking feature, a 65ft/20m tower (Gopuram), was added in the 1960s when the temple was renovated with funds provided by a successful shop owner.

Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple

Buddha, Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple, Singapore

Often called the Temple of A Thousand Lights, the Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple houses a 50ft/15m seated Buddha (which weighs almost 300 tons!). At night, lights are illuminated around the Buddha, which is the reason for the nickname!

Leong San Temple

Entrance to the Leong San Temple, Singapore Itinerary, Best Things to do in Singapore

Across the street from Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple is the classic and ornate Leong San Temple . Built in 1926, the interior features multiple shrines and glitters with gold.

Top Tip : Use the handy guide in English available near the entrance to better understand the interior of the temple.

Dinner and Drinks on Day 2 of Your Singapore Trip Planner

After a long day of Singapore sightseeing, settle in for dinner and drinks!

Swee Choon Dim Sum

Swee Choon Dim Sum, Singapore

Eating is one of the top things to do in Singapore City – and Swee Choon is a classic establishment. Since 1962, the cooks at Swee Choon have been using quality ingredients to prepare handcrafted dim sum.

We arbitrarily picked items from the list, marking our choices with a pencil, and feasted as plate after plate was brought to our table. Hailed by foodies as the best dim sum in Singapore, we highly recommend eating dinner at Swee Choon!

Top Tip : If there is a wait, don’t worry – tables free up quickly.

Druggist Craft Beer Bar

Craft beer at Druggist bar in Singapore

Located in the former Chinese Druggists Association building, the façade of Druggist Craft Beer Bar is only the beginning. Step inside and find 23 taps of craft beer from all over the world.

Note of warning : Druggist – or any other craft beer bar in Singapore – will not make the cut on a Singapore budget itinerary, as the price of craft beer in Singapore is exorbitant. For a less expensive pint of local mass-produced beer, head next door to The Tiramisu Hero or down the street to Berseh Food Center.

Day 3 of your Singapore Itinerary

Swan on lake at Botanical Gardens in Singapore

Wrapping up your 3-day Singapore Itinerary, experience some of the best nature in SG before retreating to the glamorous, air-conditioned malls on Orchard Road.

Botanic Gardens and/or Treetop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir

Decorative gazebo at Botanical Gardens in Singapore

While Singapore is a thriving metropolis, enclaves of nature can be found all around the island. Two of our favorite spots to get a real breath of fresh air on a Singapore day trip are the Singapore Botanic Gardens and the Treetop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir.

Bright pink Plumeria blossoms at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

Note : An ambitious Singapore travelers could experience both in one day, but those who would rather slow down and enjoy the scenery, should choose one or the other.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

Beautiful flowers in bloom at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

The Singapore Botanic Gardens were established in 1859 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. Free to enter (and perfect for a budget trip to Singapore), the park features multiple gardens and lakes encompassing 82 hectares of land. Stroll aimlessly through the Botanic Gardens or choose specific features to visit (maps provided at the entrances and information stands).

Smooth-coated otter at the Botanical Gardens in Singapore

Top Tip : Keep an eye out for local critters. During our visit, we spotted swans, butterflies, a clouded monitor lizard and a smooth-coated otter. Note: The Gardens are free to visit, but the National Orchid Garden requires a ticket ($15 SGD).

Treetop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir

Curious monkey watches as we cross the suspension bridge at Treetop Walk in MacRitchie Reservoir in Singapore

MacRitchie Reservoir Park is a large nature reserve in the center of Singapore Island. Many trails cut through the park, but the Treetop Walk is, by far, the most intriguing. The 2-hour hike begins on boardwalks hovering over swampy land, then moves to dirt paths in the dense forest.

The actual Treetop Walkway is a gated bridge that connects the two highest points of the park: Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang. The 820ft/250m one-way bridge sits 82ft/25m above the forest floor. Both ends of the bridge (and the bridge itself!) are hang-out spots for the popular macaque monkeys of Singapore – of which we saw several during our hike.

Monkey sits on a railing at Treetop Walk in MacRitchie Reservoir Park in Singapore

Note: There are sign-posted maps at the park, but no paper maps. Take a look at this online map before you go. The MacRitchie Reservoir Treetop Walk is accessible by public bus, but takes 45 minutes to an hour each way, so be sure to calculate that into your plans.

Top Tip : Bring a large water bottle ! Although the hike itself is not the strenuous, the humidity can take a toll. Water bottles can be refilled at the Ranger Station and Venus Drive parking lot facilities.

Orchard Road

Orchard Road – the most famous Singapore shopping street – got its name from the 19th century plantations that once covered the area. Today, the 1.3mi/2.2km street is chock-a-block with some 20 mega-malls and a plethora of hotels – and is surrounded by affluent Singapore neighborhoods. The Istana – the official residence of the President of Singapore lies at the east end, the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s house to the south, the Singapore Botanic Gardens to the west and Emerald Hill to the north.

Numerous luxury brands have retail space in the malls on Orchard Road – some high-end stores even create a queue outside their doors, only allowing a few shoppers inside at one time.

Although many budget travelers to Singapore may not be interested in shopping on Orchard Road, the malls are designed to entertain and are definitely one of the fun things to explore in Singapore. In addition to reveling in the free air-conditioning, we found several worthwhile sights on Orchard Road, which we outline below.

ION Orchard

ION Art Galley, Orchard Road, Singapore

Opened in 2009, ION Orchard is home to high-end retailers such as Prada, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana and Cartier. On the 4th floor, however, ION Art is a free art gallery within the mall. In the mornings, guides lead guests on a cultural food walk through the mall for free. ION Sky, an observation deck, sits on the 55th floor, offering panoramic views of Singapore. Note : ION Sky is accessed with tickets that are acquired through spending $50 SGD in the mall. Read the details here .

Orchard Gateway Library

Curved bookshelves at modern Library@Orchard in Singapore

Orchard Gateway, which connects Orchard Central mall to 313@Somerset, has six levels of retail space…but we visited to see the state-of-the-art library. Library@Orchard is the most modern, hip library we have ever seen!

Orchard Central Rooftop Garden and Art Trail

Another mall you can visit and keep your Singapore trip budget in check is Orchard Central. On the top floors of Orchard Central is an open and free rooftop garden. The space feels like a secret retreat high above the busy road and provides views to the north. The mall also displays art throughout – and offers handy pamphlets (in English) about the art (and where to find it in the mall).

Emerald Hill Road

Restored houses on Emerald Road in Singapore

On the north side of Orchard Road is the curving and picturesque Emerald Hill Road. The houses lining the street were built in the early 1900s featuring Chinese Baroque architecture and today it is a highly-desirable place to live in Singapore. The pleasant and peaceful street has little traffic – a portion of it is designed as a pedestrian zone.

Colorful houses on Emerald Road in Singapore

After walking the length of the street, retrace your steps to Orchard and stop in one of the many bars on Emerald Hill near Orchard Road for a drink (look for happy hour specials at No. 5 Emerald Hill , Alley Bar and Ice Cold Beer ).

More Things To Do in Singapore

Classic View of Singapore, SQ Itinerary of the Best Things to do in Singapore

Although we’ve packed in a lot of places to visit in Singapore in 3 days, our list is by no means exhaustive! We have a few more travel planner Singapore ideas, but they do not all fit into the category of Singapore Budget Travel.

Sentosa Island

The military-base-turned-entertainment Sentosa Island is a must-see for many Singapore tourists. The island features beaches, resorts, water parks, adventure activities and theme parks (all of which will significantly increase your Singapore cost of travel).

Sentosa is home to Universal Studios Singapore, Madam Tussauds, SEA Aquarium, 4D Adventure Park, zip lines, Sky Tower and much more. Explore on your own – or join one of the highly-rated Sentosa Island Organized Tours:

  • Sentosa Island (with Cable Car, Madame Tussauds and Tiger Sky Tower) – Let a guide lead the way to Singapore’s Sentosa Island. • Sentosa Island (with Cable Car) – Ride the Cable Car to Sentosa Island then visit the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom, with an option to also visit SEA Aquarium. Reserve this Sentosa Island Tour online !

Most of the Sentosa Island attractions require a ticket, but there are a few free things to do in Sentosa  for those on a tight Singapore tour budget.

Marina Barrage Singapore

Splash pool near Marina Barrage in Singapore

Visiting the Marina Barrage is one of the Singapore sights that many tourists miss – but shouldn’t! The Marina Bay Dam was built in 2008 to maintain a fresh water supply and it was specifically designed to double as outdoor space for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The Marina Barrage Walking Trail loops around for phenomenal views of the Singapore skyline. On the Marina Barrage walk, visitors can view the Supertree Grove and Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore. The wonderful green space is perfect for a picnic, flying a kite and watching a Singapore sunset. Guests with additional time can walk across the dam to the Gardens by the Bay East.

East Coast Park Singapore

The 9mi/15km stretch of coastline to the northeast of the Singapore city center offers another great place to enjoy the outdoors. At East Coast Park , relax on the beach, have a picnic lunch, ride a bike or just take a stroll. When you get hungry, head to East Coast Food Lagoon , a seaside hawker center cooking up classic Singapore dishes!

Top Tip : While in the area, make the effort to find Koon Seng Road , which features some of the most colorful peranakan shophouses in Singapore.

Singapore Zoo and Bird Park

The Singapore Zoo , opened in 1973, and hosts 315 species of animals – some of which are threatened species. The SG Zoo strives to house the animals in natural settings and features the largest captive colony of orangutans in the world.

The Jurong Bird Park is the largest bird park in the world (based on number of inhabitants): over 5,000 birds live in the park! The large, walk-in aviaries allow birds to fly freely in the exhibits. Flamingos, parrots and penguins are just a few of the animals that visitors will see at Jurong Bird Park.

Singapore Swimming Pools

With a location practically on the Equator, Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate – meaning, it is really hot and really humid year-round. Dipping into a swimming pool is a good way to beat the heat in Singapore. If it’s in your budget, we recommend booking a hotel with a pool (more on places to stay in Singapore below).

Entire afternoons could easily be spent in the refreshing waters of Singapore hotel swimming pools. However, if your hotel doesn’t have a pool – or if you just need a quick mid-day refresher – look for free sprinklers and water fountains located throughout Singapore. The water features are created for kids to help beat the heat – and splashing around in them is one of the things to do in Singapore for cheap (especially for families visiting Singapore).

Singapore Riverside: Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay

Traditional boat on Singapore River with view of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore

On the banks of the Singapore River, there are three quays that have been developed into tourist attractions and entertainment centers.

Lined with historic shophouses, all of which are occupied by restaurants and bars, Boat Quay was the busiest port in Singapore in the late 1800s. Today, the tourist-driven strip offers riverside dining and local specialties.

Top Tip : When the restaurants at Boat Quay are not busy, you can sometimes score special pricing. Once when we arrived before 7pm, we were wooed by each hostess with free drinks and discounted prices. We agreed to terms of two free drinks each and 20% off all menu prices with riverside seats. Heaping plates of spring rolls and seafood fried rice for less than $20 satisfied our taste buds and our wallets!

Clarke Quay

Located upstream from Boat Quay is another historic port, Clarke Quay. Revitalized into one of Singapore’s top entertainment districts, visitors will find nightclubs, international chain restaurants (like Hooters) and, of course, a mall.

Robertson Quay

Even further upstream is Robertson Quay, the largest of the three wharfs in central Singapore. The area has been redeveloped into mixed-use space, including several casual eateries and bars along the waterfront. Although visited by many tourists, both expats and locals frequent Robertson Quay as well.

Top Tip : One of our favorite hawker centers, Zion Riverside Food Centre , is just a short walk from Robertson Quay – and a fantastic place to find cheap eats in Singapore. If you make the trip to this local hawker center, our top recommendations are the famous ‘Carrot Cake’ (not a dessert) at Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway made by a deaf cook and Fried Kway Teow found at stall #18 Zion Road, which will likely have an incredibly long line!

Craft Beer and Tiger Beer Brewery

Little Creatures craft beer at Ice Cold Beer on Emerald Road in Singapore

Craft Beer is taking hold in Singapore and visitors can now find several craft beer bars around the city. While we are budget-conscious travelers, we have an affection for craft beer and seek it out wherever we go. During our visits to Singapore, we have found a few craft beer bars that were too good to pass by (especially if they were offering happy hour deals!).

  • Hospoda Microbrewery – small microbrewery with happy hour
  • Druggist – hip craft beer bar and restaurant with a wide variety
  • TAP Craft Beer Bar at Robertson Quay – good selection of beer from around the world
  • LeVel 33 – world’s highest brewery with super view of Marina Bay
  • Smith Street Taps – multiple taps of craft beer at an upstairs hawker stall in the Chinatown Food Complex

However, even with happy hour specials, don’t expect cheap beer…craft or otherwise. Drinking in Singapore will likely put a dent in any budget.

Singapore’s most famous locally-produced beer, Tiger Beer, offers brewery tours . The Tiger Beer brand dates to 1932 and this tour educates visitors on the brewing process, the history of beer in Singapore and includes tastings.

Day Trips From Singapore

Because of its location, Singapore day trips are somewhat limited. Short trips from Singapore city center include Batam Island (Indonesia), Sentosa Island (see above) and Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur and Malacca – Sharing a border with Malaysia, it is difficult to be so close and not venture into the neighboring country! Day trippers can see the highlights of Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur , on their own (top sights include Petronas Twin Towers and Batu Caves) or hire a guide for a private, full-day trip , which also includes visiting Malacca, a colonial-era UNESCO town full of history and charm!

Singapore Round-Island Tour – Tour the city-nation island in a bus . The Singapore one-day tour includes visiting attractions like the Henderson Waves pedestrian bridge, a Chinese folklore and history park, the Kranji War Memorial, Bright Hill Temple and a river cruise!

Pro Tip: For more DIY day trips from Singapore, consider traveling across the border to Malaysia and Johor Bahru , perhaps to visit LegoLand , (but the journey in itself can be a fascinating experience).

Budget For Singapore Trip

Colorful street decorations for Mid-Autumn Festival in Chinatown, Singapore

We tried our best to make our 3 days in Singapore budget-friendly by highlighting the top cheap things to do in Singapore (including many of the very best things to do in Singapore for free!). Rather than paying for a guide, you can save the Singapore city tour cost by using our self-guided walks. Instead of paying for high-dollar attractions, you can explore Singapore’s natural beauty.

That said, there are some concrete costs involved when planning a trip to Singapore. Getting there, accommodations and food all contribute to the overall trip to Singapore cost. Visiting ticketed attractions and drinking alcohol can significantly inflate your Singapore trip cost, too.

Budget Travel Singapore

When trying to plan cheap travel to Singapore, there are certainly things visitors can do to ensure their trip will come in under budget.

Generally speaking, accommodation is very expensive. Finding the best place to stay in Singapore on a budget can be a real task (we give a few specific tips below).

On the other hand, Singapore public transportation is very affordable…which can help balance out the high cost of lodging.

As we have already mentioned, many attractions cost a small fortune, which is why we eliminated them from our 3 Day Itinerary in Singapore. Visitors who want to splurge for these sights can still save money with sightseeing discount cards (which we detail momentarily).

One thing that can be found affordably throughout Singapore is food – and really good food, at that! The best place to find cheap eats is at hawker stands – and we shared our favorite places throughout our Singapore 3 Days Itinerary blog post.

How To Travel in Singapore on a Budget

Our best advice for you as you plan your Singapore trip in 3 days is to create a budget which allows you to save when you can…so you can splurge when you want to!

Everyone’s budget is different – so it is difficult to say how much to budget for a Singapore trip. However, using our sightseeing in Singapore – and our accommodation tips below – it is possible to keep Singapore trip expenses to about $100 USD per day, per person.

Top Tip : Check current conversions for your vacation to Singapore.

Singapore Sightseeing Tickets

Historic Victoria Theater in Downtown Singapore

Sightseeing in Singapore can be expensive, but choosing the right sightseeing pass can certainly save you money. Each Singapore tourist card has it’s benefits; we recommend researching each offer to find the one that is right one for you!

Sightseeing Pass Singapore

There are two types of Singapore Travel Cards : one that allows users to select a specific number of sights to visit OR one that allows unlimited entry to sights for a set number of days. Depending on your style of travel and sightseeing ambitions, you can choose the card that will provide the most cost-saving benefit.

Singapore Super Saver: Universal Studios and SEA Aquarium

See two of the top Sentosa Island attractions in one day with a discounted combo ticket for Universal Studios and SEA Aquarium. With the two-attraction pass, visitors can split the day between the two sights for a full day’s worth of fun!

Singapore City Pass

The 5-Day Singapore Sightseeing Pass includes admission to Universal Studios, a 2-day Hopper Pass, Open-Top bus tour, plus two more attractions of your choice. This is a great sightseeing pass for tourists who like to see and do it all!

The Singapore Pass

The Singapore Pass is based on number of sights and/or days (with upgraded options available) and includes public transportation. The Singapore Pass also includes some sights not available with other cards, like the Singapore Flyer and Tiger Brewery Tour.

Singapore Public Transportation

Ride the Singapore Flyer, SG

Taxis are notoriously expensive, but with the incredible network of public transportation in Singapore, we never had to take a taxi! Instead, we relied solely on the cheap buses and efficient MRT to get around Singapore.

The minimum fare for a ride on the Singapore MRT (underground) and buses varies from $1.50 SGD to $3.50 SGD. Fares are calculated based on distance and most of our rides within the city center costs about $2 SGD.

Singapore Transportation Cards

There are two types of transportation cards, one of which needs to be purchased in advance of using the system. Choosing which card is right for you requires a bit of thought.

The Standard Ticket is a popular choice for visitors, but it doesn’t work on buses.

A stored value SmartCard (either EZ-link or Nets FlashPay), however, can be used on the MRT and buses. The SmartCard can also be used in some convenience stores (like 7-11).

However, there are some drawbacks to either card. First, there is an actual cost to the card and a top-up minimum (which can be frustrating if you are on your last day and only need a couple more rides).

We knew we were going to ride buses (the MRT doesn’t go to MacRitchie Treetop Walk, for example – and the buses are more convenient than finding an MRT station some of the time), so we opted for the SmartCard. There is an option to refund the remaining value at the airport, but instead, we used our small balance to buy a few snacks from the 7-11 at the airport!

Top Tip : Find the most current fares (along with a fare calculator), route maps and an explanation of card types on the official SG public transport website .

Final Tips To Plan a Trip to Singapore

View from the The Promontory, Singapore, SG

Now that you know how to plan a trip for Singapore on a budget, we have some general advice to help ensure you have a fabulous vacation!

Singapore Travel Planner Tips

If you are planning a budget trip, you will likely have to forego hiring a Singapore city tour guide…but we have a few tips that can help.

Singapore Language

Singapore recognizes four official languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Most government signs and information plaques will include all four and English is widely spoken. It is important to note, however, that due to the many languages and dialects, spelling variations of sights in English often occur.

Go Underground

Underground air-conditioned walkways connect Singapore below the surface – often leading to MRT stations. Pedestrians can also use the underground passages to get from one side of the street to the other to avoid traffic (and the heat!).

Singapore Laws

Singapore has a reputation for strict laws and stiff penalties. On buses and trains in Singapore, there are hefty fines for consuming food or beverage. We never actually saw signs for Singapore’s infamous ‘no chewing gum’ law, but we also didn’t see anyone chewing it…or selling it…and it certainly wasn’t stuck to the ground anywhere!

Where To Stay in Singapore On A Budget

Accommodations are often the biggest cost of a Singapore trip. Finding affordable places to stay in Singapore can be a real challenge – but it is not impossible!

We use Airbnb as our go-to resource for finding inexpensive places to stay, however, short-term rentals are technically illegal in Singapore. There are still listings on Airbnb that are available for rent, but due to the strict nature of the country, we were not inclined to break laws in Singapore.

Best Budget Places To Stay in Singapore

On our trips to Singapore, we have stayed in hotels near the city center, at a hotel across the border in Johor Bahru, Malaysia and in an apartment as pet and housesitters .

Finding inexpensive hotels in Singapore isn’t easy. As much as we would have loved to book a room at the Marina Bay Sands (for no other reason than to walk around in the bathrobes and swim in the ridiculous pool!), it just wasn’t in our budget. After searching high and low for affordable Singapore accommodations, we found a few Singapore hotels that fit the bill.

Kam Leng Hotel – Located near Little India, the basic, no-frills room was suitable, but the hotel doesn’t have a pool and breakfast was not included (the Nasi Lemak restaurant next door, however, is amazing!).

Hotel Mi – The rooms were quite small, but modern, and the hotel has a wonderful pool and a breakfast café onsite (extra cost) – and it’s conveniently located right next to an MRT station.

Doubletree by Hilton in Johor Bahru – The luxurious Doubletree Hilton across the border in Malayasia, with an incredible pool and inexpensive services, was surprisingly affordable. However, it was a 2-hour commute to and from the Singapore city center. The lengthy travels included a somewhat entertaining, yet cumbersome, border crossing – but overall, we really enjoyed our stay in Johor Bahru .

To find a hotel in Singapore within your budget, we recommend searching for highly-rated hotels on Booking.com – but first read our top tips for getting the Best Deals on Hotels !

Want to become Pet and Housesitters ? Join Trusted Housesitters and find house and petsitting opportunities around the world! Read more about how to become an International Housesitter !

Getting To Singapore

Singapore is best reached by plane. Changi  is the main (and world-famous) airport in Singapore (seriously, the airport has gardens, art installations – check out the mesmerizing Kinetic Rain feature – movie theaters and a rooftop pool!).

For our visits to Singapore we have arrived on direct flights from Brisbane, Australia and Helsinki, Finland and departed to Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Hanoi, Vietnam . There’s even direct (and very long flights ) from the US to Singapore departing from New York , LA and San Francisco . When we need to purchase plane tickets , we start our search for the best flight deals on Skyscanner.

What To Pack For Your Trip to Singapore

Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore...and an imposter

In this travel guide to Singapore, we have covered just about everything you need for your trip! Our final tips cover a few items you will want to be sure to pack in your suitcase or backpack . Be sure to also check out all of our Packing Hacks !

Walking Shoes

Singapore is a walkable city…but only if you have the right travel shoes ! Don’t forget to pack a pair of lightweight and comfortable walking shoes for your trip. I (Sarah) have traveled with these comfy shoes by Columbia that are perfect for hot and humid cities and these flip flops , which I can wear on long days of sightseeing. Kris prefers wearing these shoes by Merrell for urban adventures.

Travel Camera for Singapore Photography

We’re certain you’ll be snapping tons of photos during your vacation to Singapore. Rather than relying on your mobile phone to capture the sights of Singapore, upgrade to an actual travel camera for high quality photos. We travel with a Canon Rebel and use an 18-135mm lens that is perfect for city shots and think it’s an excellent budget travel camera .

Day Bag, Wifi and Singapore Map

Throughout our Itinerary for Singapore, we include links to maps and more information – but to access them you need to be connected! Travelers can inquire about adjusting their phone plans to include international data or – if your phone in unlocked – buy a local SIM card.

However, we think the better option is to travel with a personal mobile WiFi hotspot . We own a GlocalMe hotspot – and love it! Top features are that we can buy data online (rather than having to buy SIM cards), which means we are connected from the moment we land and can connect up to 10 devices at one time. Additionally, the hotspot doubles as a power bank, so we can keep devices charged throughout the day!

Additionally, we find having an actual Map of Singapore is helpful for both trip planning and actual navigation. Of course, you’ll also need a Great Day Bag to organize all of your everyday travel items .

Singapore Travel Insurance

Travel insurance may protect against delayed flights and lost luggage , or if you get sick or injured abroad. If you haven’t already obtained travel insurance for your trip, consider traveling protected with World Nomads .

Start planning your trip to Singapore ! Search for the lowest airfares , the best accommodations and fun things to do …then start packing !   Want more travel planning tips? travel ITINERARIES

Google pins, singapore: a week in southeast asia’s most vibrant city, asia , singapore , travel.

Known to many at the Lion City, Singapore is the urban darling of Southeast Asia. The nation state sits at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, sharing borders with both Malaysia and Indonesia, making Singapore a convenient destination to tack onto larger trips to Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. I’d previously visited Singapore as a stop en-route to The Philippines, and realized my quick three-night detour was not nearly enough time, and a return visit was in order. Below is my complete travel guide to a week in Singapore including the best places to visit, hotels, restaurants, photo locations, itinerary ideas, travel tips and more.

HOW MANY DAYS IN SINGAPORE ?

FOUR DAYS . Singapore is one of the only places in the world where it’s possible to see most of the country in less than a week. It’s smaller in square mileage than Rhode Island, and the compact size makes it pretty easy to maximize time when planning a trip. Four full days offers a good taste of Singapore – simply tack on an extra day or two if you want to explore at a more relaxed pace.

Fort Canning Tree Tunnel.

WHEN TO VISIT SINGAPORE

Singapore is a tropical destination where weather can change in an instant year around. Typically, dry season is considered February through June (although rain is still very possible). While wet season is November through January.

EXPLORE SINGAPORE

CHINESE GARDENS

It’s a bit of a journey to reach the Chinese Gardens, but if you have the time, it’s worth the visit. The gardens are an expansive public space, home to dazzling red & white pagodas, abandoned tea houses, a Bonsai garden, statues and water features. A very serene place to spend a couple of hours.

CLOUD FOREST

One of the most popular attractions inside Gardens by the Bay is the Cloud Forest, a climate-controlled tropical wonderland enclosed in a massive greenhouse dome that houses one of the world’s tallest indoor waterfalls, lush vegetation, orchids, rare plant species and more. Timed tickets can be purchased in advance online (book the first ticket of the day to avoid crowds of tourists).

FORT CANNING

Fort Canning is a hilltop park that is home to gardens, trails and historical landmarks, but it’s an underground spiral staircase that has made the place Insta famous. The Fort Canning Tree Tunnel is an underground crossing that resembles a manicured open-air cavern – look up and you’ll see blue skies, trees and lush vegetation surrounding the opening. Sang Nila Utama Garden is also in Fort Canning, a recreation of a 14th century palace garden (reminds me of the cham temple ruins in Vietnam).

FUTURE WORLD, ARTSCIENCE MUSEUM

Future World is an ongoing exhibit inside the the ArtScience Museum of the Marina Bay Sands. The exhibit is a completely immersive digital art experience from TeamLab, featuring 16 installations.

GARDENS BY THE BAY

Definitely the most iconic spot in Singapore. Gardens by the Bay is Ferngully meets Avatar with its futuristic Supertrees measuring 25 and 50 meters tall. The gardens occupy 101 hectares of Marina Bay with an array of viewpoints, trails, exhibits and walkways. It’s worth visiting both during the day and evening for two very different experiences. Must visit attractions within Gardens by the Bay are the Cloud Forest, Flower Dome and Floral Fantasy. The Garden Rhapsody Show takes place daily at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM.

The Hive is a building located at the Nanyang Technological University. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a quick stop just to see the exterior design of the learning center, described by many as resembling stacked dim sum baskets.

JAPANESE CEMETARY PARK

It’s a short journey to get to the Japanese Cemetery Park that sits tucked away in the Hougang residential district of the city. During the spring season, there is a beautiful tunnel of blooming pink flowers that cuts through the cemetery.

I normally don’t include shopping centers as must-visit destinations when traveling, but The Jewel at the Changi Airport is truly an experience. The futuristic dome resembles a steel beehive that houses shops, restaurants, a hotel and movie theatre, as well as a living, breathing jungle and massive indoor waterfall. Light shows at the waterfall take place daily at 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, 9:30 PM and 11:30 PM.

JOO CHIAT PERANAKAN HOUSES

Joo Chiat is a small neighborhood in Singapore made up of pastel patterned homes – popular spot for photos. Intersection for the neighborhood is Koon Seng Rd. and Joo Chiat Rd.

KAMPONG GLAM

Lined with funky boutiques, eclectic murals and bright cafes, the pedestrian lanes of Kampong Glam burst with color and good energy. The neighborhood is known as Singapore’s Muslim Quarter, and it’s where you’ll find the beautiful Masjid Sultan Mosque, as well as quirky Haji Lane.

LIBRARY@ORCHARD

This ultra modern library sits inside the Orchard Gateway shopping center. It’s a two-story bookworm retreat designed with blinding white wavy shelves that are filled with colorful paperbacks, novels and magazines.

MICA BUILDING

Formerly the Old Hill Street Police Station, this building now serves as the Ministry of Information, Communication & Arts. While that might sound a bit dull, this is actually one of the most striking places in Singapore. The building has 927 windows that have been painted the colors of the rainbow – an absolute kaleidoscope of color. It sits on a very busy street with cars, buses and Grab taxis constantly obstructing the view of the building – best to visit early when the street is quiet.

MUSEUM OF ICE CREAM

Similar to its sister locations in New York and Austin, Singapore’s Museum of Ice Cream is a series of interactive pink rooms where visitors will find sprinkle pools, a unicorn playground, a pink California beach and lots of sweet treats.

PALAWAN BEACH

This popular beach on Sentosa Island offers up a crescent bay of calm water lined with palm trees and tropical greenery. It’s not on par with Palawan in The Philippines, but it’s a pleasant beach escape from Singapore’s urban center. Cross the cute boho bridge to Palawan Island and you’ll find yourself at the southernmost point in continental Asia.

PEOPLE’S PARK COMPLEX

A yellow apartment complex in Singapore’s Chinatown that is reminiscent of Hong Kong’s iconic Monster Building.

PETAIN ROAD

A short walk from Little India, Petain Road is a corridor of classic Peranakan-styled home – lots of pastel greens, rosy pinks and decorative tiling. It’s a picturesque photo detour.

REDHILL MRT STATION

Visit the Redhill MRT stop to experience a perfectly pink subway station. If you’re trying to snap a photo without people, best to visit at night.

RESIDENCE OF TAN TENG NIAH, LITTLE INDIA

This iconic Chinese villa is one of the most colorful buildings in Singapore, a kaleidoscope of blues, greens, yellows, reds and purples. One of my favorite photo locations in the city. It sits in Little India a bustling corridor of shops, restaurants and cafes.

SELEGIE ART CENTER

A quick stop in front of the Selegie Art Center is all you need to capture the rainbow shutters and trim of the colorful building.

SINGAPORE BOTANICAL GARDENS

This dazzling botanical garden is almost 170-years old, and it was the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Singapore. The gardens feature more than 10,000 species of plant, flora and fauna. Entry into the botanical gardens is free, but the National Orchid Garden is a paid ticket.

SRI VADAPATHIRA KALIAMMAN TEMPLE

A beautiful Hindu temple located on the outskirts of Little India, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman is a blur of color and sculptures of deities.

STAY IN SINGAPORE

Andaz sits sandwiched inside the city’s mixed-use Duo building, home to more than 340 rooms scattered amongst the hotel’s 15 floors. This is one of my favorite mid-range properties in Singapore. Rooms are outfitted with large floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to hardwood floors, plush linens and a lovely modern design. The hotel is also home to a spectacular infinity pool on the 25th floor that overlooks sweeping views on Singapore’s urban skyline.

FOUR SEASONS

A stay at the Four Seasons is always my go-to luxury option, and the brand’s Singapore location is nothing short of fabulous. Rooms are bright and airy thanks to a white and neutral color palette, and oversized windows offer sweeping views over the city. The hotel’s Orchard Road location is ideal – close to lots of shopping and restaurant options. Hotel offers an on-site spa, pool and Michelin-starred restaurant.

FULLERTON HOTEL

A stay at the Fullerton Hotel feels pretty epic thanks to its location inside a former government building. Rooms are spacious, but the design is nothing memorable. It’s the pool at the base of the hotel’s towering stone columns that gives all the feels.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL

Mandarin Oriental occupies a stellar location on Marina Bay offering easy access to the city’s main tourist attractions. The property boasts 527 rooms and suites, luxurious retreats outfitted with neutral colors, floor-to-ceiling windows, lavish bedding, plush floral carpets and spectacular views of Marina Bay.

RAFFLES SINGAPORE

This is by far the most beautiful hotel in Singapore, and also one of the most expensive. Raffles is the crown jewel on busting Beach Road, resembling a creamy French colonial mansion with rows of arched windows and gold trim. The property offers a range of suite accommodations – all designed with dark wood, white interiors, high ceilings and colonial-styled accents.

RITZ-CARLTON, MILLENIA SINGAPORE

The location of the Ritz-Carlton in Singapore is ideal – very central to all the main tourist sites, restaurants and shopping. Book one of the Grand Marina rooms for unobstructed views of Marina Bay, as well as a plush king bed, daybed with a view, walk-in closet and oversized bathroom. Rooms with Club Access include extra amenities – personalized check-in and check-out, delicious breakfast, afternoon hors d’oeuvres, garment pressing and limo service within the area.

EAT IN SINGAPORE

A BEAUTIFUL DAY CAFE

Cute cafe with four themed corners – pink florals, safari adventure, cozy & homey and a beer garden.

CAFE MONOCHROME

The 2D cafe craze has arrived in Singapore! The dazzling black & white sketch design is the draw here – it feels like sipping coffee in a comic book.

ENTRE-NOUS CREPERIE

Ridiculously popular French creperie that serves authentic sweet and savory crepes from an extensive list of homemade fillings.

KOMA is the Japanese cuisine concept from the Tao Group. The dark, gorgeous restaurant is located inside the Marina Bay Sands, and serves up a deliciously overpriced menu that’s a mix of meats, seafood and raws.

NASTY COOKIE

The cookies are crunchy, soft and chewy all at the same time! Menu of flavors include cookies n creme cheesecake, matcha, strawberries n creme, chocolate mint, chocolate chip, dark chocolate chip, biscoff, choco bueno, smores, white choco macadamia and red velvet crumble .

NATIONAL KITCHEN BY VIOLET OON

Violet Oon is the premier authority on all-things food in Singapore, and her restaurant inside the National Gallery has become a destination of sorts to foodies in Singapore. National Kitchen serves Peranakan cuisine in a stunning space outfitted with French colonial design cues including wood panels, patterned floor tiles, black leather and rich accents of jade, gold and blue. The restaurant offers both a traditional menu, as well as plant-based menu.

NEWTON FOOD CENTRE

One of the most popular food courts in Singapore serves an overpriced, delicious variety of hawker dishes including chili crab, oyster omelets, satay, carrot cake and more.

The popular Tokyo ramen shop has expanded throughout Asia, and now includes a Singapore location in Suntec City. Ramen is made to order.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS

Open air bar that sits on the rooftop of the National Gallery overlooking a sweeping panorama of Marina Bay.

Gardens by the Bay

Surrounded by the iconic Supertrees of Gardens by the Bay.

GET AROUND SINGAPORE

The city’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is the easiest and most affordable way to get around Singapore. Alternatively, Grab Taxi is also an option – simply download the app, and order a taxi with the click of a button (similar to Uber).

SINGAPORE TIPS

  • CURRENCY – Currency is the Singapore dollar. Almost everywhere takes credit card – it’s not necessary to arrive with lots of cash.
  • LANGUAGE – The four main languages spoken in Singapore are Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English.
  • SAFETY – Caution is important when traveling to any destination, but Singapore is one of the safest places I have visited.
  • CHEWING GUM – Yes, it’s true. Chewing gum is banned in Singapore. It’s illegal to sell gum, but tourists are permitted to bring it in for their own consumption.

1 Week Travel Itinerary for Malaysia and Singapore

singapore itinerary 8 days

Malaysia is pretty close to Singapore. It would only take 6-7 hours by train, 4-5 hours by bus, and 1 hour by plane. I went to Singapore from Johor Bahru, Malaysia by bus. Tickets ranging from RM35 to RM250, and then went back to Malaysia by plane that cost me 70USD with AirAsia.

Crossing the Singapore-Malaysia border is kinda confusing even though it’s my second time traveling to Singapore from Malaysia.  One important thing that I learned from those trips was to keep my ticket with me even after I boarded the bus. You would need it in case they do a random inspection.

Here’s a DIY (do-it-yourself) Travel Itinerary to Singapore and Malaysia:

Day 1 – batu caves.

Batu Caves Hindu temple is a famous landmark in Kuala Lumpur . You won’t miss the 140 feet golden structure of Lord Murugan once you passed the entrance. In order for you to see the 400 million years old limestones caves, you have to take the stairs with 272 steps.

Climbing the stairs is easy, the hardest part of it was the mischievous little monkeys along the way. One monkey took my water bottle from my hand and ran away like a thief! It was funny and scary at the same time.

Day 2 – Perdana Botanical Garden

Formerly known as the Perdana Lake Gardens, it is located at the Heritage Park in Kuala Lumpur. Originally, it was created as a recreational park then turned into a Botanical Garden. It’s nice to stroll around here coz of the nice landscaped gardens, the man-made lake, and the tiny Stonehenge replica — all for free!

Petronas Tower

“Identical towers, identical wonders.” This is probably one of the famous icons everybody would instantly recognize coz it used to be the tallest building in the world (now it’s Burj Khalifa in Dubai). Those skyscrapers towering 88 floors are Islamic-inspired and the buildings house the corporate headquarters of the Petronas Company and other offices.

This mall is located underneath Petronas Twin Towers. It is divided into three parts; Ampang Mall, Park Mall, and the new Ramlee Mall. There’s also a science discovery center called “Petrosains”  and an oceanarium called “Aquaria”.

Day 3  –  Putrajaya

Putrajaya is located in Selangor, about 25 km from Kuala Lumpur. It’s Malaysia’s federal administrative capital. Aside from handling the administrative functions of KL, lotsa tourists come here coz there’s a lot of attractions to see. What captured my attention was the bridges and the Marina Putrajaya with musical fountain and extreme water sports.

If you’re craving for local Malaysian cuisine, Jalan Alor is the perfect place to be. You can dare yourself to eat something exotic like frog porridge, pig innards bak kut teh, and braised chicken feet. But if you’re not too adventurous, you can still enjoy some seafood restaurants and Chinese hawker food that are really good.

This area is famous for pub crawling and after-hours entertainment. Popular bars and restaurants in KL can be found here. I like the buildings in Changkat coz it used to be a pre-war colonial shop-houses that were renovated and turned into pubs and western restaurants.

Day 4 – Resorts World Sentosa

Sentosa is a famous leisure destination and island resort getaway in Singapore . You can literally stay here for days without getting bored because there’s a lot to explore. People of all ages would surely enjoy attractions like the Universal studios, casinos, S.E.A. Aquarium, Singapore Cable Car, Boardwalk, Merlion, Adventure Cove Park, Zipline Parks, etc.

Day 5 – Marina Bay Sands

If you’re the kind of person who appreciates great infrastructure, Marina Bay is the perfect spot for you. Marina Bay Sands’ famous swimming pool is the largest and the tallest rooftop infinity pool in the world. If you want to get a spectacular view of the city at night, go to the rooftop and take awesome pictures of the skyline.

Gardens by the Bay

singapore itinerary 8 days

This 101 hectares nature park is one of my favorite destinations in Singapore because I like the way they showcase tropical landscaping. I know it takes guts and skills to make those conservatories (flower dome and cloud forest), I can’t say anything but WOW… I’m very impressed.

Day 6 – Merlion Park

This park is pretty close to other landmarks like Marina Bay Sands, Esplanade (Theatres on the Bay), and Singapore flyer. They said that Merlion is a well-known marketing icon of Singapore.

It represents a mythical creature with the head of a lion and a body of a fish. Taking a photo with this Merlion is a must. Try to search “merlion selfies” and you’ll be surprised how creative people are in taking selfies with this icon. 🙂

Asian Civilisations Museum

You can find the history and ancestral culture of Singapore in this museum. Each gallery is organized according to their geographic location such as; China, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and the Islamic world. There’s an entrance fee of 8SGD for foreigners and free admission for locals.

Day 7 – Singapore Flyer

singapore travel guide

This world’s largest observation wheel gives you a 360-degree view of the city. On a clear day, you can also see a panorama view of Malaysia and Indonesia. It’s kinda expensive though, 33SGD for a short 30-minute ride.

Jurong Bird Park

singapore itinerary 10 days

This park has almost all bird species in the world. You can also find the world’s largest walk-in lory flight aviary at 3,000 square meters and over 9 stories high. Kids will surely love the fun exhibits, interactive shows, bird feeding, and tram ride.

So there you have it, my suggested DIY travel itinerary for 1 week in Singapore and Malaysia. I stayed with some friends in Malaysia and Singapore and they made my trip easier coz they know their way around the city. Singapore Weather In May

As we visited the country in the month of May, the average temperature was pleasant and comfortable, ranging between 25 to 32 degrees Celsius. It is a dry month and turned helpful for local sightseeing and other excursions. Evenings were pleasantly warm, giving us a chance to explore the place but at times, one might feel a bit humid.

5 Best Experiences Of Our One Week In Singapore

From Sentosa Island to Universal Studio and Night Safari, Singapore was really astounding for us. Following are the best experiences of our one week in Singapore trip:

1. Adventures Of Nocturnal Night Safari

Beach at night

On the first day of our Singapore trip, we headed for the amazing night safari during sunset. This beautiful place is home to over 1,000 animals representing nearly 100 species and one can check them out indulging in their nightly rituals. The Singapore night safari enthralled us, especially my kid. The entire region is divided into 7 geographical zones which can be covered either by foot by a tram. We also attended the cultural performances here including the one by the local tribals. We also visited the restaurant at the Night Safari, named Ulu Ulu Safari which served delicious local food.

2. Electrifying Tour Of Sentosa Island

Sea View

Sentosa Island is an excursion that one must not miss out on while holidaying in Singapore. Before going to Sentosa do keep in mind that you can’t plan anything else on this day as there are so many things to explore here. From theme parks to beaches, and shopping to enormous aquariums, Sentosa is truly a once in a lifetime experience. This island surprised us with the world’s biggest aquarium, that is, the S.E.A. Aquarium and as we walked through it, the vibrant aquatic creatures stunned us. We also attended the Dolphin show here which was quite interesting and interactive, giving you a chance to capture the rare and exclusive experiences.

capture the beauty

As the day proceeded, we headed for this energetic and charismatic night show at Sentosa called the ‘Wings of time’. It is a spectacular show, showcasing the importance of courage and friendship in human life. The show featured amazing effects of laser, water, and fire, making it one of the chief attractions for travelers vacationing in Singapore. This spellbinding show ended with an astounding fireworks display and with numerous beautiful memories we returned back to our accommodation after grabbing the local delicacies in Sentosa.

4. Unveil Hollywood At Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios Singapore

We also visited Universal Studios during our one week in Singapore. This is another amazing place that will be equally enjoyed by your kids. This beautiful movie-theme park comprises 24 rides and attractions that will surely pomp up your adrenaline rush. If you are a true daredevil then you can also opt for a coaster where the riders are suspended. The loops, sudden turns, near-collisions, and breathtaking drops will undoubtedly make you scream your heart out. The magnificent architecture of the Universal Studios that includes lemurs, dinosaurs, mummies, and ogres will add excitement to your hours here.

5. Interesting City Tour Of Singapore

Merlion Statue

We also went for a local sightseeing tour in Singapore and explored numerous popular attractions including Merlion Statue, China Town, Modern Cafe’s, Parliament House, Orchard Road, Westin Stamford Hotel, and Marina Bay. Merlion Statue is the official symbol of Singapore and had its own story. China Town was a local market from where one can shop souvenirs and other gift items. This place is also known for Chinese street food. If you are interested in checking out South Indian cuisine while holidaying in Singapore, then do visit little India where you will find clean and comfortable restaurants serving delicious South Indian food and beverages.

Our Hotel In Singapore

In Singapore, we stayed at V Hotel Lavender. It was quite comfortable and luxuriating accommodation but my experience with the staff was not much appreciable.

Food In Singapore

Food is a bit expensive in Singapore, especially at popular attractions including Universal Studios. However, Little India, China Town, and Mustafa are the best escapes where you can find mouthwatering and flavorsome Indian and International cuisines.

Singapore Travel Tips For Family

As you are traveling with your family, I would suggest future travelers keep a track of your itinerary and daily plan. In my case, the locals and staff members were a bit rude so I would suggest you to cross-check everything in advance to avoid hassles.
