House Speaker Mike Johnson survived a motion to vacate. Here's why his job is far from safe

Democrats joined a majority of Republicans on Wednesday to save Speaker Mike Johnson from an attempt by GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to remove him from the job

WASHINGTON -- Mike Johnson's job isn't safe yet.

In a stunning show of unity in the often divided House, Democrats joined a majority of Republicans on Wednesday to save the GOP speaker from an attempt by fellow Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to remove him from his post.

But while Democrats in the minority threw the Louisiana congressman a life raft by voting on his side, they made clear they might not do so again. That means the threat for Johnson still lingers as Greene and other lawmakers can at any time call up another motion to oust him.

The episode highlights the increasingly precarious situation for Johnson, who faces the same conservative forces that took down his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, but with an even smaller majority that has forced him to continuously rely on Democratic support to carry out the most basic functions of legislating. Republicans control the House by the barest of margins, 217-213.

Here’s what to know about how the House can remove a speaker and what’s ahead for Johnson:

The current rules of the House allow any lawmaker — Democrat or Republican — to put forward a resolution declaring the speaker's chair vacant. If the House approves the resolution, it has the effect of ousting the speaker from office.

The “motion to vacate” has existed for most of congressional history. But it had never been deployed successfully until last October when a rebel band of Republicans joined with Democrats to oust McCarthy as speaker.

McCarthy’s removal came, in part, as the result of the concessions he was forced to make to win the speaker’s gavel in the first place. Among the concessions was agreeing that a motion to vacate could be triggered by a single member — the threshold that historically has been the norm, but that had been abandoned by Democrats in the majority.

Proponents of allowing a single lawmaker to file the motion said it promotes accountability, noting its long history in the House.

At any point, a member of the House can introduce a privileged resolution — a designation that gives it priority over other measures — to declare the office of the speaker of the House of Representatives vacant.

Once the motion is introduced, the lawmaker sponsoring it can request a vote on the House floor. Such a request forces House leaders to take action within two legislative days.

But there are procedural motions that members of either party can make to slow or stop the process — and that's exactly what happened when Greene called for a vote Wednesday on removing Johnson.

The No. 2 House Republican, Steve Scalise , immediately made a motion to “table” Greene's resolution, which defeats it if successful. The vote to table was fast and overwhelming, with lawmakers voting 359-43 to defeat her effort and keep Johnson in the job.

The speaker had fought for months to navigate an increasingly fractured Republican conference, which has — in effect — been operating in the majority in name only since January 2023.

Republicans unanimously chose Johnson late last year to replace McCarthy after several candidates for the job failed to gain enough support. His conservative bent was seen as a welcome departure by the most extreme members of his party who had accused McCarthy for years of being too moderate.

But Greene, who became a McCarthy ally late in his tenure, has been skeptical of Johnson’s speakership from the beginning. While she criticized her fellow far-right colleagues for toppling McCarthy, she had warned Johnson for months that she would try to remove him in a similar fashion if he were to push ahead with a package to support Ukraine as it battles Russia’s invasion.

“He should not bring funding for Ukraine,” Greene had told reporters.

But Johnson did just that last month when he advanced a foreign aid package for Ukraine to the floor where it was overwhelmingly approved and signed into law.

Other Republicans are also critical of Johnson, including Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who was a co-sponsor of Greene's resolution to oust him.

It remains to be seen, but the vote Wednesday showed Johnson's job is far from safe.

Without Democratic help, Johnson could have easily been ousted. Eleven Republicans voted to proceed with Greene’s effort, more than the number of GOP votes it took to oust McCarthy last fall. Seven Democrats voted present and all but 32 of the others voted with Republicans to block the effort to oust him.

“Our decision to stop Marjorie Taylor Greene from plunging the country into further chaos is rooted in our commitment to solve problems,” Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said after the vote.

Asked what they might do if there were another attempt to oust the speaker, Jeffries said, “Haven’t given it a thought.”

Some Republicans are frustrated by the threats to Johnson and were dismissive of Greene. Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., said of those trying to remove the speaker, “They’re pretty good at getting attention, but they have not been recognized for their ability to get things done.”

He said if they keep pushing to oust the speaker, “I think you can expect more of the same: Failure.”

The speaker of the House, under the rules of the chamber, is required to keep a list of individuals who can act as speaker pro tempore in the event a chair is vacated. The list, which is oddly written by the sitting speaker at any given time, remains with the House clerk and would be made public if the speakership were vacant.

The first person on that list would be named speaker pro tempore and their first order of business would be to hold an election for a new speaker. The House then would vote as many times as it took to elect a speaker.

In the case of McCarthy, the role of speaker pro tem fell to his close confidant Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., the chair of the House Financial Services Committee. He was in the role for three weeks, until Johnson's election.

Associated Press writers Lisa Mascaro, Kevin Freking and Stephen Groves contributed to this report.

2nd engineer cruise ship jobs

New WSF leader aims to flip the script with success stories and worker empowerment

2nd engineer cruise ship jobs

Ever since he was two or three years old, Steve Nevey wanted to work on ships. His father was in the British Navy and took Nevey to visit some of the ships he was working on during his childhood in the United Kingdom. When show and tell came around at school, Nevey remembers his peers talking about their pet rabbits and dogs – he was talking about aircraft carriers.

True to his passion, Nevey has spent a lifetime on the water, working for a ferry system in Scotland, major seagoing corporations and the cruise industry before he found himself traveling to Seattle in 2008 with a single suitcase in hand to work with the Holland America Group on a cruise ship. He never left.

“What I really enjoyed the most whenever I was working on ships was just being out without any kind of noise around,” Nevey said. “It's just the ship and the water and you've got a job to do that day, and you do the job and you get the ship where it needs to go.”

Today, Nevey is over a month and a half into his role heading the Washington State Ferry system as assistant secretary, succeeding Patty Rubstello, who announced her resignation as assistant secretary in December after serving in the position since 2021.

“He is really an elite operator, really understands the ins and outs of marine operations and he's a private sector guy, so he also understands customer service, and honestly, we've not had that at the helm of WSF in recent memory,” said 23rd District Rep. Greg Nance , who serves on the House Transportation Committee and is Vice Chair of the Legislature’s Maritime Caucus. “We've been hiring highway department folks climbing the WSDOT ladder and they're really smart and really gifted, but running a marine fleet like WSF is extremely complicated. It's one of the hardest jobs anywhere.”

As Nevey jumps into the role at a moment of high tension. WSF’s aging fleet was been reduced to 21 vessels when 19 are required for full service, and WSDOT reported an 86% on-time performance and a completion of 95.6% of scheduled runs in the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2024 (October through December 2023), leading riders, ferry community leaders and gubernatorial candidates to view the situation as a crisis.

Nevey has a different take. One of his leading strategies jumping into his new role is to flip the narrative and tell a story of a ferry system firmly on its way to recovery. Planning to work from the “bottom up,” Nevey is working to empower ferry crews and inform ferry communities to foster productive feedback.

An informational campaign for ferries

The pressure has been on Nevey from the jump. “Everyone's got a plan until they get punched in the face,” he said, echoing the old Mike Tyson quote.

“The thing that keeps me up at night is getting new boats and making sure that program is successful,” he said, “but also laying out a path for the staff and the crew and all of the employees so we can all get on the same page and know which direction we're headed.”

Nevey served as WSF’s director of marine operations, but was surprised at the scrutiny that instantly came with his new leadership role. Even more so, he’s learned that ferry employees and staff are desperate to come out of a pandemic-era slump and return to the standard of service expectations, as they live in ferry communities themselves and feel pressure from riders too.

“The trajectory is good, but obviously things weren't that great not that long ago and so we're clawing our way back out,” WSF public information officer Ian Sterling said. “There's money to build boats… Believe me, we want boats more than anybody I think other than the customers, but it takes time.”

In the meantime, Nevey is on a campaign to loop frustrated riders in on WSF’s short term successes in clearing barriers to advance them to higher positions and the longer-term fixes still in the making, like securing five hybrid-electric ferries.

“I think one of the things I struggle with is the telling our story piece,” Nevey said. “We're getting suggestions and feedback based on things that I don't think are really true (such as pursuing the quickest avenues to secure new boats or hiring entry-level staff.) We're already doing that, we haven't been very good at telling you we're doing that. I think that's why telling our story is the critical first step to correct the record and make sure people understand the good things that are already going on.”

The successes Nevey says are worth noting

“We're not in crisis anymore, we're in recovery, and we can really see that in our numbers,” Nevey said.

Nevey said that in the first four months of this year, WSF has canceled less than 1% of its sailings, as compared to about 2.5% for the same time period in 2023. From January to April this year, WSF completed 99.1% of its scheduled sailings, as compared to 97.8% in the same time frame a year before.

“One sailing being canceled is unacceptable, but we run 50,000 sailings over four months.”

Nevey said he often hears suggestions to hire entry-level crew, but that entry-level hiring isn’t the problem – it’s getting workers the credentials they need to graduate on to much-needed positions like captain, chief mate and chief engineer. That work, he says, is already under way.

Washington State Ferries has already hired nearly 600 fleet personnel in the last few years, despite an international maritime worker shortage, Nevey reported.

Now with a new scholarship program that will be kicking off another round of recruitment by the end of the month, WSF will have three state-sponsored scholarship programs, putting them on course to graduate between 24 and 36 deck officers a year where they had previously only graduated five or six, keeping pace with an estimate of 105 such roles that will be vacated by 2027 as captains reach retirement eligibility. Workers have their tuition paid for and can be paid full-time to ride pilotage and take necessary exams.

“We have two primary challenges, and crewing is one, and vessels are the other, and one is long term and one is shorter term,” Sterling said. “I think we've been pretty successful with the crew. We're going to get out of the crewing situation. And now, it's about vessels, and that's a longer term fix.”

Nevey also assures that the ferry system is already on the fastest route toward securing five new vessels, bucking calls from conservative legislators and gubernatorial candidates Bob Ferguson and Dave Reichert to pursue diesel-powered ferries, if it’s the quickest option.

Legislation passed in 2023 allowing WSF to issue a national request for bids for shipbuilders with an option to sign two contracts to build vessels simultaneously would see two new hybrid-electric vessels hit the water in 2028, followed by another three by 2030. If WSF were to pivot all of a sudden toward diesel-powered ships, their current legislation and funding would be thrown overboard, setting the process back a few years. The earliest Nevey would expect to see a diesel boat in the water is 2030.

“We're on the best path with these electric boats and people need to trust us that this is the best path and we've looked at all options,” Nevey said.

Working from the office, not so much from the water

Feedback from ferry staff and the public is “our north star in every action we take and guides our investments to realize those benefits over time,” Nevey wrote in a letter to the Seattle Times on May 1 . He’s showing up to ferry community events, but says the lines are already open for public feedback and such in-person ferry rides might not be the best use of time.

“Ferry riders have great ideas, they have smart suggestions because when you ride a boat, 90 minutes or two hours a day, five days a week, you think a lot about the boat,” Nance said. “I think we can all do a better job listening to each other, including empowering commuter voices and crew voices when we're setting budgets and when we're setting priorities.”

Nevey is occasionally told that he should ride the ferries himself from certain locations for a few days in a row “to know what it’s like,” by riders who believe, he thinks, that such in-person experiences would make him and the ferry system “try a little bit harder.”

“I'm doing everything I can with the resources I have every day,” Nevey said. “And a lot of the people who work for me do take the ferry every day, they do experience the same things that  the riders experience, and our employees give us feedback on the stuff that they're hearing.”

“If we're out (traveling) around the system, that doesn't necessarily mean that we're doing the day job,” Sterling said, but added that Nevey is already attending several ferry community events this month, one being a youth career fair in Eagle Harbor on May 21.

WSF already does outreach with social media platforms and rider alerts and currently has many channels for public feedback, Sterling said. People can participate in Ferry Riders Opinion Group (FROG) surveys, attend the two virtual public meetings WSF hosts a year, email communications and reach out to customer service nearly 24 hours a day.

“We're working on strategies to get feedback from the customers,” Nevey said. “We don't have really robust feedback loops right now.”

Public meetings used to be held in person within ferry communities, but only a handful of people would show up, Nevey said he was told, and the virtual public meetings had presented a better use of time and money as they’ve drawn hundreds to thousands of participants. He said he could see himself doing in-person meetings, such as speaking with groups at a terminal.

Ferry leadership in the past hasn’t been the most outward facing, said Walt Elliott, a Kingston resident and former co-chairman of the state's ferry advisory executive committee. He said it almost seemed like a deliberate iron curtain at times. That’s why Elliott appreciated when former head of ferries David Moseley would frequent visits to ferry communities and have conversations with riders and write his phone number and email up on a blackboard.

“I think the public meeting should be a public dialogue and it should be with each major (ferry community) group,” Elliott said. “If you do all at once, it doesn't work because (their interests are) just too diverse.”

Nance also believes that a reliable route for transparent and accountable leadership would be to elevate the head of ferries to a cabinet-level position, appointed by the Governor; a policy that Nevey thinks is unnecessary, given his direct communication with Gov. Jay Inslee several times a week. Breaking off from WSDOT could also sever WSF from important resources, he said.

A culture change in progress, scaled up

While some of the successes Nevey is championing will require some patience to see through, he says some of his efforts to reshape the WSF workforce from the bottom up are starting to bear fruit.

When Nevey was director of marine operations, overseeing 1,600 of WSF’s 2,000 workers, he worked to empower employees to make decisions themselves that they thought would improve the operating system instead of waiting on a game of phone tag up the management chain.

Nevey published a culture change playbook for the staff and created feedback groups, coupling leadership teams with employees on each route holding many different jobs to gather input.

Now, crew members email Nevey directly with ideas to fix parts of the system, when they never would before, discouraged by the rigidity of a government command and control environment, he said.

“We're in the middle of that shift,” Nevey said. “Feedback I hear is that it's working and people are starting to feel a lot more connected to the company and to each other,” and happy crew make for an inspired workforce and happier customers.

“Coming into this job, I wanted to say, okay, everything I've done in operations, I want to scale that to the whole system, so that's what I'm working on now,” Nevey said.

When Nance takes the ferry, he likes to speak with the crew and hear their inside perspective on the ferry system. He’s noticed that culture flip from the bottom up.

“Over the last several years, I’ve sensed really a tone shift with crew,” Nance said. “We lost a little bit of our zest and we lost a little bit of our edge over the last few years, and one thing I've been really, really excited about with Steve's leadership is there's sort of a sense of pride and purpose, in a very short time period, is really coming back to life with the crew.”

Editor's note: This story was corrected to reflect the amount of vessels needed to run full service. Data for sailing reliability in the first quarter of 2024 was added.

  • Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, with 18 passenger-accessible decks, eight different neighborhoods and 2,805 staterooms.
  • Think of Icon of the Seas as an all-in-one adventure vacation contained on a ship. Young families and energetic travelers will enjoy it most.
  • Itineraries originate from Miami , sail to destinations around the Caribbean and include a stop at Royal Caribbean's private island , Perfect Day at CocoCay.

If you have any degree of interest in traveling or cruising, chances are you've heard the buzz around Icon of the Seas. Another record-breaking ship by Royal Caribbean International , Icon of the Seas debuted on Jan. 27, 2024, as the largest cruise ship in the world. It is epic in every sense, featuring 18 cruiser-accessible decks and stretching 1,196 feet from bow to stern.

With greatest-of-all-time soccer player Lionel Messi as the ship's godfather, the Icon of the Seas is truly iconic. Messi brought the entire Inter Miami team along for the opening ceremony and the big reveal of the team's new Royal Caribbean-sponsored jerseys. I was fortunate enough to attend this star-studded ceremony as part of the press preview sailing in the days leading up to the ship's grand debut to the public. It was everything I thought it would be and more, and nobody could have been more appropriate than Messi to send this ship on her maiden voyage.

Boarding a ship of this size can seem overwhelming, but not when you understand the layout. Icon of the Seas is broken up into eight distinct neighborhoods: AquaDome, Central Park, Thrill Island, Chill Island, Royal Promenade, The Hideaway, Suite Neighborhood and Surfside, a neighborhood built for young families looking for nonstop fun and kid-approved eats and treats.

In addition to these public areas, there are 2,805 staterooms spread across 12 decks. Icon of the Seas' capacity maxes out at 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, but with the plethora of public spaces and variety of things to do and see, you can choose your own adventure without encountering more crowds than you want to.

Skye Sherman

Icon of the Seas itinerary

During its inaugural 2024-2025 cruising season, Icon of the Seas offers seven-night eastern or western Caribbean adventures from Miami, stopping at a variety of tropical destinations. All sailings include a stop at Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, in the Bahamas . Other destinations include Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis ; Roatan, Honduras; and Cozumel, Mexico .

During the 2025-2026 cruising season, new destinations will include Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; Labadee, Haiti; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (part of the U.S. Virgin Islands ). All sailings will originate from Miami.

No matter your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you'll visit beautiful places – but you can expect to feel torn about spending any time off the ship, because it's just that jampacked with things to do.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Who should sail on Icon of the Seas?

Icon of the Seas appeals not so much to a demographic as to a psychographic; you're going to need to be someone who likes to live life in all caps. Royal Caribbean set out to create "the world's best vacation" contained on a ship, so Icon of the Seas is for anyone who would enjoy the combination of a beach trip, a resort stay, a water park adventure and island-hopping.

Fun-loving travelers and families with kids of varying ages will do best on this ship; it feels a little bit like Disney World with over-the-top everything and a truly massive sprawl. Older travelers who prefer a more quiet, refined experience may want to opt for a less kid-friendly ship. Still, even couples without children will find plenty of fun adult-friendly things to do and romantic places to tuck in.

The Royal Promenade can be quite loud and buzzy, but simply relocating to another onboard neighborhood can completely shift the vibe. Also, keep in mind that the ship really is huge, and walking from end to end can be a hike, so those with limited mobility or endurance might want to look into a smaller ship.

Icon of the Seas prices are high in its opening season, but cruisers with big dreams and small budgets can expect rates to drop by the time the next ship in the series debuts.

The stateroom

With a ship this overstimulating, it's imperative that your stateroom is a haven. Luckily, Icon of the Seas offers peaceful rooms, many of which feature ocean or Central Park neighborhood views. Cruise ship accommodations are stereotypically compact – even cramped – but the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in Icon of the Seas' cabins (with the exception of the windowless interior rooms) lend an airy, open feel. The cabin layouts are also optimized to provide the maximum amount of storage, floor space and comfort.

Stateroom decor is mildly nautical- and tropical-themed, with calming hues that mimic the scenery outside your window (think blues, beiges and whites). High-tech elements include smart TVs, LED mirrors and the ability to control many aspects of your room from an app.

My husband and I stayed in an Ocean View Large Balcony Stateroom, a 204-square-foot refuge from the hustle and bustle of the ship (the balcony adds another 65 to 70 square feet). This room type can sleep up to four people with a sofa bed for one or two; the room also features twin beds that convert to a king bed for couples.

My husband is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and we were comfortable in our room, even though our quarters included a large bed, a bathroom, a sofa and a desk. We loved sitting on our private balcony and watching the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean flow by.

If money is no object, the Ultimate Family Townhouse – an over-the-top eight-guest, three-story pad with a private whirlpool on the balcony, three bathrooms, a slide that connects the second and main levels, an in-suite cinema, a dining room and a kitchenette – looks epic. But keep in mind, it costs nearly $100,000 for the week.

The Sunset Corner Suites (about one-fifth of the cost of the Ultimate Family Townhouse, but still expensive) are also pretty sweet, with a wraparound balcony and a bed facing the sea.

Luckily, not all rooms break the bank; with four main stateroom categories (suite, balcony, ocean view and inside) and 28 subcategories, there's something for everyone.

Best amenities on Icon of the Seas

It's almost impossible to run out of things to do aboard Icon of the Seas.

For thrill-seekers, the largest water park at sea – Category 6 – features the Frightening Bolt (the tallest waterslide on a ship) and the Pressure Drop (the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise vessel).

If you've tired of the seven swimming pools, six waterslides, laser tag, mini-golf, rock climbing wall, escape room, sports courts, outdoor decks, theater, spa and all-day programming, simply take a stroll down the Royal Promenade for Las Vegas -style people-watching. The Royal Promenade has 15 restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as a Starbucks that seems to have a line no matter what time you go. The neighborhood feels a bit like a shopping mall … if a shopping mall had floor-to-ceiling ocean views made possible by the world's largest kinetic art sculpture.

The Pearl, a feat of engineering, is one of the most unique aspects of the ship's design. This art piece is actually a load-bearing structure supporting three decks, but it looks and feels like an interactive art experience designed solely for the enjoyment of guests. The multisensory immersive structure has 3,000 kinetic panels and moody ever-changing lighting. It is one of the first things guests will see when they walk on board, as it stretches from the Royal Promenade up to Central Park.

My husband and I spent most of our time at the FlowRider surf simulator – his favorite amenity – but we made sure to leave time for Taylor Swift trivia at Spotlight Karaoke and the superhuman stunts of the Aqua Theater show, a must on any Icon of the Seas voyage. The ship even has a massive ice arena called Absolute Zero for ice skating (the 20-minute sessions are complimentary) and impressive shows.

We also loved lounging in The Overlook Bar & Pods, an area at the very front of the ship (behind the AquaDome) that features two levels of floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows. It felt airy and open, which can't be said about many cruise ship interiors.

Best dining venues on Icon of the Seas

There are more dining options aboard Icon of the Seas than you can fit in on a seven-night cruise – but you can give it the old college try. Thirteen of the dining venues are complimentary, while 14 are specialty restaurants (which cost extra; fees vary). There are also 18 bars and lounges.

The best meal we experienced on the ship was at the Chops Grille specialty eatery. When we spotted Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty and a group of bigwigs at a table next to us, we knew we were in the right place. We loved sitting outside and enjoying the breezes of Central Park while we chowed down, but you can eat indoors for an elegant steakhouse experience and a view of the open kitchen and butcher's display, which shows off specialty cuts like high-grade wagyu and bone-in tomahawks.

While I'd never turn down a swanky steak dinner, grabbing quick poolside bites at El Loco Fresh and indulging in some food hall-style grazing at AquaDome Market were equally enjoyable. We also had no complaints eating several meals at Windjammer, the classic complimentary cruise ship buffet.

Even though we don't have children, we stopped into Surfside Bites for a very kid-friendly meal, complete with soft serve ice cream cones from Sprinkles (because no cruise is complete without soft serve). We didn't try anything from the open-air, lemonade stand-inspired Lemon Post bar, but its menu of cocktails and mocktails looked delicious.

And since you're on vacation, be sure to check out the milkshake bar Desserted, where the sugary creations are as photo-worthy as they are decadent. They're worth the upcharge.

Best excursions on Icon of the Seas

Depending on what's on your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you may be able to book activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, tropical jungle adventures, visits to Mayan ruins, volcano hikes, rainforest zip lining, relaxing beach days or cultural immersion tours.

Note that Royal Caribbean features the same options on many of its other Caribbean cruises; none of the excursions on offer are exclusive to Icon of the Seas.

Because our press preview sailing only visited Perfect Day at CocoCay, we did not experience any of the shore excursions. Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas was plenty of fun, even though we didn't plan anything in advance.

If we had made plans, we would have liked to check out the Up, Up and Away tethered hot air balloon, which wasn't running that day, and the overwater cabanas at Coco Beach Club, which were all booked. Thrill Waterpark (which features the tallest waterslide in North America), Oasis Lagoon (the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean) and the adults-only Hideaway Beach are other highlights of Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Overall impressions of Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean seems to be focused on superlatives. It has the biggest, best, tallest, largest and most of everything – especially when it comes to Icon of the Seas. If you like jampacked, adventurous vacations that squeeze a lot of adventure and relaxation into one memorable week, Icon of the Seas is probably for you.

While I love seeing Royal Caribbean push the limits of what cruises can be, the ship may almost be too big for some. It's an all-out Vegas-esque vessel that feels more like a floating city; you will probably forget (more than once) that you're not on dry land.

That's not necessarily a bad thing – if Icon of the Seas looks fun to you, it probably will be – but my husband and I tend to gravitate more toward authentic, immersive, on-the-ground cultural experiences when we travel. While Icon of the Seas is a lot of things, it's not that. We had a fantastic time and have already started planning a future Royal Caribbean cruise with a group of friends and family, but we also sympathize with the anticruisers of the world. Vacationing does not a traveler make.

Still, the shows are entertaining, the service is attentive, the music is jamming, and the architecture and design are incredibly impressive. I have no real complaints and suspect that most cruisers will have the time of their lives on Icon of the Seas – exactly as the minds at Royal Caribbean envisioned when they dreamed up this iconic ship.
