There Are So Many Reasons To Visit Costa Rica

From impressive landscapes and incredible adventure activities, to the vast array of wildlife, there are so many reasons to visit Costa Rica. 

There’s nowhere quite like Costa Rica. It’s wild, raw and rugged. It’s adventurous. It’s beautiful. Plus, the people are kind natured and relaxed. I’ve always found Costa Ricans to be warm and helpful. With nature all around and a peaceful nation to explore, Costa Rica is the perfect place for an exciting adventure.

I was really excited to be asked by Wanderlust Magazine to be part of the Costa Rica Sanctuary – am online hub dedicated to the country. It also gave me an excuse to look back at my old photos, blogs and videos! I’ve visited the country twice now – once as a backpacker, then again on a trip with the tourist board. Between those two trips I’ve experienced a lot.

I’ve flown along the country’s longest zip line, tried white water rafting for the first time, been woken up by howler monkeys in the rainforest, explored Caribbean beaches and epic volcanoes, and truly got to grips with the country’s favourite phrase ‘pura vida’!

1. wildlife.

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. There are more species of plants, insects, birds, sea creatures and animals than most other countries put together. For a small country, that’s quite some accolade!

Spot sloths hanging lazily from tree branches, watch whales in the Pacific, wake up to the sounds of monkeys and macaws, and watch as lurid green frogs hop along the rainforest floor.

2. Adventures

With such epic scenery, this is a country made for adventure. I loved zip lining through the trees in Monteverde and exploring the misty cloud forests. On my last trip I gave white water rafting a go, racing down the Orosi River – another unforgettable experience! 

Friends of mine have learned to surf on the chilled beaches of the Pacific, while others have SCUBA dived in the Caribbean, seeing so many incredible sea creatures including sea turtles, sharks and dolphins.

3. Landscapes

Costa Rica is home to untouched beaches, huge volcanoes, and vast areas of rainforest and protected countryside. I’ve taken thousands of photos on my visits. The landscapes had me reaching for my camera over and over again!

I still remember entering into Arenal Volcano National Park and seeing the huge looming top of Arenal Volcano. It was just breath-taking.

As well as the beauty of areas like Corcovado National Park, I’ve loved visiting the country’s waterfalls. La Fortuna waterfall is a popular stop on most itineraries, as there is so much to do in that region of Costa Rica. However, a little closer to the capital San Jose is Cataratas Del Toro – the country’s largest waterfall… and what a beauty it is!

4. Pura Vida

While Costa Ricans use the phrase ‘pura vida’ as a catch all for hello, goodbye, how are you and life’s good… there’s more to it. Pura vida is a way of life. It’s about living a happy and content life. Believe me when I say it, after a few days in Costa Rica, you’ll understand exactly what it means!

Costa Rica is definitely worth a visit. And these are my reasons:

1. Tropical Rainforests

These beautiful rainforests cover more than a quarter of the country. Full of wildlife and beautiful vegetation.

2. Volcanoes

Costa Rica has OVER 200 volcanic formations. But, only 5 of them are considered to be active. Costa Rica prioritises safety, so if there’s any chance of one erupting all parks will be closed. Nonetheless, volcanic soil is highly fertile and makes for Impressive forests.

3. Biodiversity

This country is one of the most biologically diverse countries on the planet. It’s home to over 500.000 species, which is around 5% of the world’s biodiversity.

We just couldn’t resist the stunning beaches, which are some of the most beautiful in the world. Our favourite? The one in Manuel Antonio National Park.

5. Wildlife

Costa Rica’s wildlife is unique and unforgettable. From sloths to toucans, we were always looking out for the next amazing creature to spot.

And honestly. You might think, is there really that much wildlife? Absolutely! On a walk in the town of Manuel Antonio, NOT the national park, we saw multiple sloths , 6 different groups of monkeys, and macaws.

6. Snorkelling & Diving

With its pretty waters and abundant marine life, Costa Rica is a dream destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. On our 1-day dive trip near Caño island, we saw sharks, rays, dolphins and much, much more.

7. Sustainability & Eco-Tourism

We greatly appreciate the country’s commitment to sustainability and eco-tourism. In most National Parks you’re not allowed to bring in ANY type of food. So that the animals don’t eat it, and you can’t litter.

The government has many policies in place to protect Costa Rica’s nature. Like banning single-use plastic, and tax discounts for sustainable projects. Some areas, like Caño Island, are so heavily protected, you can’t even visit. You can only dive and snorkel on the south shore of the island.

Costa Rica is known for excellent coffee. There are coffee plantation tours and coffee roasting workshops. Which is great if you’re a coffee lover like me!

9. Friendly people

All people of Costa Rica made me feel welcome and at home. Pura Vida!

10. National Parks

The National Parks in Costa Rica are heavily protected. This means you’ll be sure to have an amazing time visiting them!

No litter, beautiful greenery and an abundance of wildlife are a certainty.

11. The Arenal Volcano

Yes, I have already mentioned volcanoes. But this one deserves a special mention.

Watching this volcano at nighttime means you get to see lava flowing down the sides, and maybe even lava spraying out the top.

12. The Fruits

Costa Rica has the perfect climate for growing delicious tropical fruits, and we couldn’t get enough of the fresh and juicy papayas, pineapples, and mangoes.

Right. You can get these fruits in North America and Europe. But they’re not the same. The fruits for export are picked before they’re ripe, which makes them less flavourful. The fruit in Costa Rica is on a completely different level!

13. Surfing

Learning to surf in Costa Rica is a great experience, with relatively gentle waves and warm water to make it easy and fun.

14. Peacefulness

I could always find a quiet spot to relax and soak up the sunshine, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. And with quiet I mean no people, there will always be the sound of wildlife, wherever you are.

15. Wellness

The country’s excellent spas and wellness centres are a great way to relax and rejuvenate, with treatments using local herbs and ingredients.

16. Museums

There are many great museums in Costa Rica. Like the National Museum of Costa Rica. This museum shows archaeology, history, anthropology and natural history.

Costa Ricans celebrate their history and traditions with colourful festivals and parades throughout the year, which are always a sight to see.

The food in Costa Rica is amazing. Being so veggie and vegan-friendly, we had a great time trying out all the local dishes.

Costa Rica is considered a safe country. We had no problems at all walking around in the dark. We’ve not felt unsafe at any time!

The weather in Costa Rica is amazing. Especially from December to April. This is the dry season, but also the busy season.

Little bungalows in the jungle, views of the pacific ocean, views of volcanoes, there are too many unique accommodations to even list.

Best Places to Visit & Where To Stay

Drake’s bay.

Drake’s Bay was our absolute favourite destination during our 3 weeks in Costa Rica . It’s interesting to get to; you either have to fly in a tiny propellor plane, or you take a boat from Sierpe.

In the dry season, it is usually possible to drive, but you’ll come across river crossings, slippery roads and waterfalls. Great to see, but not so great to drive in. You’ll need a beefy rental car, and it’s not unlikely to damage due to the poor road conditions.

Named after the famous pirate Sir Francis Drake, who supposedly used the bay as a port and is rumoured to have buried treasure in the area.

Drake’s Bay feels remote; it’s quiet & calm, and the roads are sand and gravel.

From here you can visit Corcovado National Park . This HUGE National Park is home to ocelots, pumas, jaguars, three types of monkeys, tapirs, and crocodiles. It was the BEST day trip we did in Costa Rica.

Where to stay in Drake’s Bay

We stayed in Casa Tuanis . This small guesthouse is airconditioned and right in the town. Close to good restaurants and a shop. It’s affordable and comfortable!

Manuel Antonio

Home to the Manuel Antonio National Park. This park is a bit more touristy but has AMAZING beaches and an abundance of wildlife. The town has great restaurants and bars, and it’s a good place to learn how to surf. Book your ticket online in advance, because there are no tickets at the park.

Where to stay in Manuel Antonio

We picked Vista Serena as our accommodation and highly recommend it. Affordable and quiet. It has a great view of the Pacific and the sunset.

Away from the noisy town, but a VERY short bus or taxi ride away from the National Park and beaches. It’s possible to walk like we did, but the way back is uphill.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Our last stop before going to Panama. This cute little town on the Caribbean coast has a different vibe than the rest of Costa Rica. It feels more Caribbean. The culture, colours, and food show this. It’s close to Cahuita National Park, which is FREE to visit. You can donate, but it’s not mandatory.

Walking around just outside the town you’ll find toucans, monkeys and sloths.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a year-round destination, thanks to its tropical climate and diverse landscape. However, the best time to visit depends on what you want to do and what part of the country you plan to visit.

Costa Rica is considered to have three seasons, which do overlap. It makes it worth visiting all year round!

High Season

The high season in Costa Rica is from December to April because that’s the dry season. During these months, the weather is sunny and warm, making it an ideal time to visit the beaches or take part in outdoor activities.

Keep in mind that this is also the busiest time of the year for tourism, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

The low season in Costa Rica runs from May to November, which is the rainy season. However, this is a bit of a misnomer, as the weather can vary widely depending on the region.

For example, on the Caribbean coast, the rainy season runs from September to November, while on the Pacific coast, it can rain sporadically throughout the year.

The benefit of travelling during the low season is that there are fewer crowds, and prices can be much lower.

Green Season

The months of May and June and October and November are said to be the “green season” in Costa Rica.

A time of year when the rains are more consistent. While this may not be ideal beach weather, the rains can bring out the greenery of the rainforests and make for spectacular scenery.

It’s also a great time to see wildlife, as many species are more active during the wetter months.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Costa Rica depends on your own preferences and interests. Keep in mind that even during the rainy season, it rarely rains all day, every day – so you can still enjoy many different things.

Whether you prefer sunny beach days or active outdoor adventures, there’s something for everyone in this tropical paradise.

How many days in Costa Rica is enough?

Based on the size and diversity of the country, it’s difficult to say how many days in Costa Rica are enough. However, I recommend spending AT LEAST 10 days in the country to make the most out of your trip.

This will allow you to visit some of the most iconic destinations, such as the Arenal Volcano, Drake’s Bay, Tortuguero National Park, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest. We even have a specific 2 day itinerary for Monteverde.

Of course, the duration of your visit will depend on your interests and travel style. If you’re planning on spending most of your time at the beach, you may only need a week to enjoy the sun. But if you’re interested in active adventures, you should allow for more time to go hiking, rafting and ziplining.

Take the time to enjoy all the nature. Whether you’re here for a week or a month, the beauty of Costa Rica will leave a lasting impression.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a relatively small country, but its diverse landscapes and terrain can make getting around a bit of a challenge. However, with the right transportation options, travelling within the country can be a breeze. Here are some of the best ways to get around in Costa Rica:

Domestic Flights

If you’re looking to travel long distances quickly, domestic flights are a great option. Sansa and Nature Air are the two main airlines in Costa Rica, offering flights to several destinations across the country. The benefits of flying are that it saves time, and provides you with spectacular aerial views of the scenery.

But as we all know, this is absolutely not the most eco-friendly way of travel , and thus only advised if you’re very short on time. We did end up taking a domestic flight in Costa Rica, but MOSTLY because I love aviation. Sure, it was also very convenient. Let’s not pretend like it was only because of my love for airplanes.

Despite it being the ONLY flight we took in our 5 months of travelling Central America, we still made sure to offset our carbon emissions.

Private Transportation

Another convenient way to get around is Private Transportation. Private shuttle services are available to transport you from the airport to your hotel or take you on day trips to nearby attractions.

Keep in mind that private transportation is expensive, but it’s worth it if time and comfort are your top priorities.

We did one trip by private transport. It was very hard to get from Liberia to Monteverde . And a shuttle was inconvenient because of two transfers. Plus, it ended up being cheaper to book a trip through Get Transfer . This is a company I definitely recommend! They have a mobile app , too.

Rental Cars

Renting a car is the best option for those who want more flexibility in their travels. It allows you to go at your own pace, make spontaneous stops and visit more remote destinations.

We consider renting a car in Costa Rica the best option for transportation . Especially in the low season, it’s not expensive and even ends up being cheaper than shuttle buses.

Unfortunately, we only figured this out a few days before arriving in Costa Rica. Which made the prices skyrocket, if there was any availability at all.

We ALWAYS use Discover Cars to get the best deals on rental cars! Slight warning, the reviews on sites like Trip Advisor for Economy Rent a Car are not very good. They’re cheap, but that’s usually for a good reason. This was the only last-minute option that fit our budget, but we decided to skip them.

Keep in mind that a few roads in Costa Rica can be challenging, so it’s important to have a good understanding of the driving conditions and be comfortable with dirt roads or steep hills. If you use Google Maps or something similar, you’ll be fine! Just don’t try to drive to Drake’s Bay.

Public Transportation

Public transportation in Costa Rica is a reliable, affordable way to travel from one destination to another. Buses are the most common form of public transportation and offer an extensive network across the country. Travelling by bus is the most affordable way to get around, but it may not be the most comfortable, especially for long distances.

We took buses from San José to Puerto Viejo, and from Manuel Antonio to Uvita.

Organized tours in Costa Rica offer convenience, expertise, socializing, and sustainable tourism. Everything is arranged for you, and experienced guides provide insight into the culture, history, and wildlife.

You can choose from various options, and socialize with like-minded travellers. It’s a stress-free way to explore the gorgeous landscapes and diverse culture of Costa Rica.

Yes, Costa Rica is considered a popular tourist destination, with over two million tourists visiting the country each year. Its reputation as a tourist destination is due to its natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and eco-friendly tourism industry.

While there may be areas that are more touristy than others, visitors who venture beyond the main tourist hotspots can experience a more authentic and immersive cultural experience. In general, Costa Rica’s tourism industry has a reputation for being welcoming, friendly, safety-conscious, and sustainable.

Which is better Belize or Costa Rica?

This depends on your type of travel. People go to Costa Rica for the wildlife and Nature, and people go to Belize for a beach holiday.

There is definitely more to do in Belize than just visiting the beaches, but it’s definitely not as adventurous as Costa Rica.

Is Costa Rica cheaper than Hawaii?

Yes, Costa Rica is generally considered to be cheaper than Hawaii when it comes to accommodation, food, and activities.

Yes, Costa Rica is considered a safe destination. There are cases of petty theft and pickpocketing, but that is it.

We did not feel unsafe at all on our trip through Costa Rica. But it is always wise to be aware of your surroundings, and not go out by yourself at night. But that goes for anywhere!

Can you drink tap water in Costa Rica?

Tap water is safe to drink in Costa Rica. Only in some remote areas, including Drake’s Bay, it’s not safe to drink.

Ask your hotel or hostel to be sure, but generally speaking, the water is safe to drink.

You might not be able to jump on a plane to visit Costa Rica today, but there are so many reasons to put this country on your list of dream places to visit when you can. Below are the top eight reasons why Costa Rica should be calling your name.

Costa Rica has long been one of the  most popular tourism destinations in the world . With its golden beaches, abundant wildlife and endless opportunities for adventure, it offers an unparalleled tropical vacation experience. There is no shortage of  fun things to do in Costa Rica , no matter what type of vacation you are looking for.

Costa Rica is renowned for its stunning biodiversity, vast protected spaces and warm weather. It’s home to dense jungles, active volcanoes, rushing rivers, spectacular waterfalls and vibrant cities. In a single day, it’s possible to drive from Serengeti-like plains to lowland swamps to frigid mountains.

Sadly, the  global coronavirus pandemic  has forced Costa Rica to close its doors to international tourism for much of 2020, but the country is gradually reopening. Costa Rica has 0.03% of the world’s landmass, yet it boasts an astonishing  5% of the world’s biodiversity . That means that of every 20 animal species on Earth, one of them is native to Costa Rica.

The country is famous for its sloths, monkeys, sea turtles, tree frogs, toucans and macaws. Costa Rican mammals include jaguars, pumas, ocelots, tapirs, peccary, deer, coatis, anteaters, agoutis, raccoons, possums, skunks and armadillos. It’s a world-class birding destination, with resplendent quetzals, oropendolas, scarlet and green macaws, toucans and toucanets, and all kinds of raptors, aquatic birds and songbirds.

Among the reptiles, Costa Rica is one of the world’s largest nesting grounds for four species of sea turtles, and it is teeming with iguanas, geckos and snakes. Amphibians like poisonous dart frogs and red-eyed tree frogs are iconic. And the oceans are full of whales, dolphins, marlin, sailfish, tuna, red snapper, roosterfish, lobster and octopus.

The flora is also incredibly diverse, from the stately guanacaste that is Costa Rica’s national tree to the tiniest orchid. Flowering trees and shrubs provide delightful splashes of color amid the dense green foliage that covers much of the country.

It’s a global capital of adventure tourism.

Recreational ziplining was actually invented in Costa Rica , and it remains a breathtaking adventure that’s not to be missed. Costa Rica is also a global magnet for surfers. Other popular water sports include whitewater rafting, kayaking,  scuba diving  and snorkeling.

The country is also a fisherman’s paradise, with some of the world’s largest populations of sailfish and marlin. Both deep-sea and inshore fishing are big attractions, and anglers are also drawn to Costa Rica’s many rivers and lakes.

There is no shortage of  exciting outdoor adventures, activities and tours  to enjoy in Costa Rica. Among the ways to explore the country’s abundant natural riches are hiking, birding,  horseback riding , all-terrain vehicle tours, cycling and mountain climbing.

For extreme adventurers, there’s skydiving, bungee jumping, canyoning and  waterfall rappelling . And the popular ziplining tours often include heart-stopping Tarzan swings, challenging ropes courses and rickety hanging bridges.

Breathtaking national parks in a wide range of environments.

Roughly 25% of Costa Rica is set aside for natural preservation in the form of national parks and private reserves.

Among the most popular national parks is Manuel Antonio — a smallish, easily walkable jungle with gorgeous beaches, packed with monkeys, sloths and other wildlife.

In the southwest, Corcovado National Park is often called the crown jewel of Costa Rica’s park system. Remote, rugged and off the beaten path, it’s thick with tapirs, peccary, coati and exotic birds.

Tortuguero National Park is another vast wilderness of virgin swamps, jungles and rivers accessible only by boat or plane. It’s one of the best places in the world to find sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach, or to watch baby turtles hatching and waddling to the sea.

Costa Rica is also famous for its volcanoes, most of which anchor a national park. These include the otherworldly Poás, the moonlike Irazú and Rincón de la Vieja, a thermal wonder that boasts spouting geysers and bubbling mud pots.

So by now you’re muddy, sweaty, exhausted and you might have peed your pants a little on the zipline tour. Where to clean up and kick back?

Costa Rica offers some of the most luxurious lodging options in the world, from the sumptuous Four Seasons in Papagayo to the five-star Tabacón in Arenal to the splendid Lapa Ríos in the Osa, and let’s not forget the countless gorgeous vacation rentals all over the country.  There’s also a huge range of lodging options for the not-so-rich, including $10-a-night hostels, humble  cabinas  and totally decent hotels that won’t set you back more than $50 a night.

There are yoga hotels, hot-springs hotels, ecotourism hotels that specialize in “rugged luxury.” And there’s a vast array of  vacation rentals  where you can move into a fully equipped home for a week or two, cooking your own meals in a stainless-steel kitchen, if not inviting a chef to do the cooking for you.

Speaking of food, you’ll find restaurants and bars serving all kinds of international cuisine and imaginative cocktails. There are  delicious Costa Rican foods  you have to try during your visit.  You’ll also find many exotic  tropical fruits  are abundant in Costa Rica.  And you’ll have to try eating at a  soda , one of Costa Rica’s ubiquitous, inexpensive eateries specializing in varied lunches called  casados . You’ll also enjoy the traditional breakfast, which is  gallo pinto  (rice and beans), typically served with eggs, fruit and bacon or sausage.

Welcome to the happiest country in the world.

Costa Rica often ranks at or near the top of the list of “ happiest countries in the world ,” as ranked by various indexes that measure the overall well-being of their inhabitants. You’ll discover the culture in Costa Rica is unlike any other.  “Pura vida” — “pure life” — is the national slogan, reflecting a happy-go-lucky attitude that is typical of the friendly people here.

Costa Rica abolished its army in 1949, diverting its former military budget primarily into health care and education. Its adult literacy rate is close to 98%, and it has one of the best health-care systems in Latin America.

A large part of the northwestern Nicoya Peninsula has been declared one of five “ blue zones ” in the world with extraordinary longevity rates — a place where it’s not uncommon for people to live to be 100 years old.

Tourism is Costa Rica’s top industry, responsible for some $2 billion in annual revenue, and it’s hard to find a business here that doesn’t benefit from the approximately 3 million people a year who normally visit. The naturally friendly Costa Rican people are well aware of that, and they go out of their way to make visitors feel welcome.

It’s hard to complain about  the weather

Average temperatures in Costa Rica are between 70° and 80° Fahrenheit, and that’s in any month of the year. Temperatures vary by elevation, but in any one place there’s very little change in temperature throughout the year. So don’t expect cold winters or hot summers, and by the way, there’s no such thing here as spring or fall.

There are two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season, known as  verano  or summer, lasts from December to April, at least in most of the country.

The rainy season, known as  invierno  or winter, lasts from May to November, with September and October being the wettest. On the flip side, this is the low season for tourism, when you’ll find the best prices and the smallest crowds.

However, rainfall patterns are much different on the Caribbean coast. You might find the driest weather there at a time when the Pacific coast is experiencing its wettest.

Rain usually falls in the afternoon, allowing visitors to explore the country in the morning and relax in the afternoon. The rain also turns the countryside a resplendent green, making the “ green season ” many people’s favorite time of year

It’s close, and it’s safe.

Not counting migrants from Nicaragua, most visitors to Costa Rica are from the United States. It’s a three-hour flight from Miami to Costa Rica — compared to over five hours from Los Angeles and Hawaii. Costa Rica is the Central Time Zone, so visitors from North America experience little if any jet lag.

Also, Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Latin America. Crimes against tourists are rare, with the most common being theft of valuables that are left in the wrong places.

It’s a bad idea to leave valuables in cars, and rental cars are especially vulnerable. Also, never leave bags full of wallets, passports and phones on the beach while you swim in the ocean.

Walking alone in isolated places at night is also inadvisable. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, keep your valuables in a safe place, and you should experience no problems.

Dazzling beaches on two coasts.

Costa Rica has 800 miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and that means there are lots of beaches. Some of them are postcard-perfect marvels, with white sand, turquoise water and shady palm trees. And the water is always warm.

All beaches in Costa Rica are open to the public by law, so nobody can prevent you from going to any beach. In practice, there are a few secluded beaches with big hotels in front of them that are hard to get to if you’re not a guest. But if you do a little hiking, it’s not hard in most places to find a beach that you’ll have all to yourself.

Do be aware that riptides and heavy surf sometimes cause drownings. Ask the locals if a beach is safe for swimming, and beware of venturing into deep water in heavy seas. But if you take reasonable precautions, you’ll generally find that Costa Rica offers a world-class beach experience.

These are just eight of the reasons Costa Rica stands out on a global level as a near-perfect tropical vacation spot. We didn’t mention the country’s vibrant nightlife, the museums in San José, the bachelor parties in Jacó, the spelunking in amazing caves, the fascinating archaeological sites or the … insert your preferred adventure here. Looking for reasons to visit Costa Rica? Here are seven things that will make you add Costa Rica to your travel bucket list and want to plan a trip ASAP!

Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations in Central America, and it’s not hard to see why.

This country has so much to offer! I visited Costa Rica as part of a two week tour with  G Adventures and I had a great time exploring the highlights of this diverse country.

Costa Rica is definitely best for travelers who love nature and outdoor adventures, although if your idea of a vacation involves sitting on the beach at an all-inclusive resort, you can do that too!

While I do love other Central American countries like Guatemala a little more, I can’t deny that Costa Rica is an incredible destination, and one that’s easy to travel to with great tourism infrastructure.

Here are the top reasons to visit Costa Rica!

1. The beaches

Costa Rica is home to many stunning beaches on two coasts: Pacific and Caribbean.

The Caribbean coast is more laidback and less developed but growing rapidly, while the Pacific coast is more developed and home to the majority of Costa Rica’s tourism.

You’ll find pristine beaches and beautiful national parks and nature preserves on both coasts. You can also do all sorts of activities, and Costa Rica is especially known for its great surfing!

2. The natural beauty

There’s no shortage of natural beauty in Costa Rica. You’ll find diverse landscapes, from the aforementioned beaches, to jungles, volcanoes, and mountains. 

Although Costa Rica has one of the most developed economies in Central America and has robust infrastructure, I was shocked by how rugged and wild much of the country felt. Costa Rica is also a very eco-conscious country and they work hard to preserve and protect their natural beauty.

3. The wildlife

Costa Rica is the most biodiverse country in the world. You’ll find an incredible amount of wildlife packed into this relatively small country. I was blown away by the wildlife I saw.

It’s possible to have ethical encounters with many animals in the wild, including sloths, monkeys, frogs, toucans, iguanas, and more. And if you’re brave you can get up close with crocodiles, caimans, and tarantulas! It’s a daily occurrence to spot amazing animals while in Costa Rica.

4. The food

For me, Costa Rica definitely had the best food out of any Central American country.

Yes, a lot of it is the typical Central American fare (rice, beans, plantains, etc.) but it was always prepared in a way that was really tasty! I never got tired of it in the two weeks I was there. And it was definitely the healthiest food, with tons of fresh vegetables. I also found it’s really common for Costa Ricans to have fresh fruit juice with every meal, and they never drink soda.

Aside from the traditional food, you’ll also find lots of cute, healthy cafes and restaurants in the more touristy areas. (Although these are definitely more expensive than eating traditional food!)

5. The waterfalls

Yes, this could probably fall under “natural beauty” but I wanted to give it its own item anyway!

Costa Rica is full of with stunning waterfalls, like the popular La Fortuna Waterfall pictured above. I loved this waterfall because it’s one you can swim in, and the water was an amazing color! Another extremely popular (but off the beaten path) waterfall is the bright blue Rio Celeste.

You’ll find waterfalls in so many places in Costa Rica, and they were all super impressive.

6. The people

Costa Rican people are very friendly, sociable, and helpful. And although many of them speak English, it’s always appreciated if you know some Spanish and use it with them!

With tourism playing such a big role in Costa Rica and being an esteemed career path, you’ll find that many people who work in hospitality and the service industry are very professional and proud of what they do. It’s hard to have a bad experience with anyone in Costa Rica.

They’re also very laidback and truly embrace the “pura vida” way of life.

7. The outdoor activities

If you love activities that get your adrenaline pumping, you’ll never be bored in Costa Rica. There’s no shortage of things to do. Some of the more adventurous activities I tried included waterfall rappelling, ziplining through the jungle, swimming in waterfalls, and learning how to surf.

Even if you’re not a thrill-seeker, there are many outdoor activities like hanging bridges, nature walks, and bird-watching that will keep you entertained and allow you to appreciate Costa Rica’s beauty.

The first time you visit Costa Rica, the experience is overwhelming. This is a country bursting with vibrancy. That word is often overused, but it’s true when it comes to Costa Rica. The landscape is lush and brilliantly green. The oceans on either coast are deep, sparkling blue. And the land is covered with some of the most astoundingly colourful animals you’re ever likely to see.

Costa Rica is a natural wonderland. It’s also one of the most accessible destinations for North American travellers. If you want to spot exotic wildlife, zipline through jungles, hike across volcanoes and over hanging bridges, and lounge on beaches on the Pacific or Caribbean coasts, Costa Rica should be on your radar. It’s also safe, affordable, and unbelievably friendly. If you haven’t visited already, it’s time to experience the pura vida lifestyle for yourself.

Why should you go on a trip to Costa Rica?

1. costa rica is home to some of the world’s most unique wildlife.

The animal life in Costa Rica is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. Despite being a relatively small country in Central America, stretching just over 51,100 square-kilometres / 19,700 square-miles, Costa Rica bursts with wildlife. This is partially due to its location along the meeting point of migration routes of both North and South America. Many North American and South American birds winter in Costa Rica, meaning that it’s flush with bird species year round. Species include colourful favourites such as the scarlet macaw, keel-billed toucan, and legendary resplendent quetzal. 

It also has a varied geographical environment within its small borders. The landscape shifts between various microclimates within relatively short distances, changing from dry coastal beaches to volcanic jungles, cloud forests to deep river valleys. Depending on where you are in Costa Rica, you’ll find monkeys, tree frogs, nesting turtles, and maybe even ocelots and jaguars, if you’re lucky enough to spot one in Corcovado in the south. And let’s not forget about sloths. These adorable, famously slow animals abound throughout Costa Rica, feasting on the narcotic leaves of cecropia trees. You won’t have problems spotting them, especially if you’re equipped with a good pair of binoculars—or simply follow the crowds gazing up into the trees.

2. Costa Rica is an adventure haven

Costa Rica’s diverse natural environment lends itself to a lot of adventure opportunities. The landscape around Arenal Volcano is one of the most popular spots in Costa Rica. It’s a great place to go ziplining if you want to feel the rush of wind as you fly over the jungle canopy. There are hanging bridges in Arenal as well, but more famous ones in the cloud forests of Monteverde. These bridges let you observe wildlife high in the trees—and provide a sizable adrenaline rush if you’re scared of heights, like I am. In the volcanic highlands, mountain biking and hiking are also very popular activities. You can bike around Lake Arenal, hike up to the caldera of one of the active volcanoes—although you should always follow safety precautions and explore with a guide. There are rivers criss-crossing Costa Rica which are great for white-water rafting. And the beaches on the coastlines are not just for lounging. You can snorkel and swim, but even more exciting, you can surf and scuba dive. Costa Rica’s landscape is made for outdoor adventure.

3. Costa Rica is one of the happiest nations in the world

In Costa Rica, pura vida is the national slogan and the way of life. “ Pura vida ” literally means “pure life,” and it’s a greeting and a national philosophy. It means to simplify and appreciate what matters most: family, health, community, education, and the natural environment. The people in Costa Rica, known as Ticos, take pura vida very seriously. Costa Rica invests heavily in education and conservation. They are rated as some of the happiest people in the world. The Nicoya Peninsula is even one of the world’s Blue Zones, where people live the longest in the world. The food in Costa Rica is all about locality and freshness. Every meal is served with fresh fruit. Every dish is made with fresh seafood or fresh farm eggs. And the people are happy and welcoming. It’s hard to top how gracious they are as hosts.

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica or NOT

Should I visit Costa Rica? This is a popular question as the coronavirus situation begins to plateau, and there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Our lives will be resuming soon, and many of us are going to be ready to escape and enjoy life again on vacation. Costa Rica is already on many people's radar as it truly is a fantastic place to visit, with incredible diversity, beaches, rainforest, wildlife, and something for everybody - well, almost everybody! This page is specifically designed to answer that question, is Costa Rica right for me? We work with many people from a variety of backgrounds and have compiled a list of the Top 10 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica or NOT. We have also added some commonly asked questions about the coronavirus situation below so that you can make an up-to-date, informed decision .

Free Vacation Planning

1)  it’s the rainforest, expect rain.

Reason to visit: The rains keep the jungles lush, green and teaming with life.  The savvy traveler will plan their itinerary around traditional weather patterns, which can vary significantly across the country.  I personally love the beginning and end of rain seasons as everything is so lush and beautiful.  The wildlife is generally more active, the scenery is gorgeous and the prices are lower.

Reason not to visit: If a little rain has the ability to ruin your day, you should not even consider Costa Rica as a destination.  Chances are likely that no matter how carefully you plan, you will encounter at least a little rain. 

2)  Beautiful Beaches – because they are protected

Reason to visit:   Well over 99 percent of the coastal land of Costa Rica is protected by maritime zones.  These zones prohibit construction within 200 meters of the high tide mark.   One can often walk along jungle lined beaches and spot wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, parrots and toucans in the trees that back them!  This holds particularly true on the Central and South Pacific as well as the Caribbean side.

Reason not to visit:   There are few beach front hotels due to the maritime restrictions.  If you love boardwalks and high rise hotels looming over the beach, you probably will not like most beach destinations in Costa Rica.

3)  Pura Vida – Don’t worry, be happy

Reason to visit:   Pura vida – what a fun phrase and way of life.  While it literally translates to “pure life”, the more practical definition would be don’t worry, it will be alright.  Pura vida is a way of life down here.  Things run a lot slower and far less stressful than in many other countries.  You may have to wait 20 minutes at an ATM to withdraw money – pura vida is the answer.  Put a smile on and try to strike up a conversation with a local. They will appreciate your efforts and if nothing else, you’ll both have something to laugh about.

Reason not to visit:   Pura vida – your transfer is 5 minutes late.  “What could possibly be taking them so long?!?!  Don’t they know I am on vacation?!?!”  If this is something you might say you may want to consider another destination.  Things do run differently here for better or for worse.  One thing is certain; you are not going to change it.

4)  Prices – It looks like a great deal!

Reason to visit:   You have done your homework and looked at the fine print.  You know that most “unbelievable deals” are riddled with hidden fees.  You have done a little research, sifted through the offers and have realistic expectations on the one you chose.  You are ready for Costa Rica and most likely have reserved a vacation package with a reputable travel service so you know what your bottom line is ahead of time and have the confidence that you will not go over budget this time.

Reason not to visit:   You believe that the most important factor in planning your vacation is price.  If you fall into this category, chances are very likely you will be sorely disappointed with Costa Rica.  There are thousands of “unbelievable deals” that really are unbelievable as you almost always end up paying exorbitant hidden fees or you end up with hotels and tours that can only sell at bargain basement prices.  Often the worst offenders of these deals are the flight, hotel and rental car packages, which nearly always end up costing 2-3 times the advertised price when all is said and done.  Unfortunately, those that fall for these type of “deals” never see the bottom line until it is too late.  ALWAYS read the fine print and ask about the things that are not included such as taxes, rental car insurance, breakfast or meals at the hotels, etc..

5)  Hotels – the good, the bad and the ugly

Reason to visit:   Your idea of a vacation is to see and experience something different.  You understand that what is stocked in every Holiday Inn in the United States may be a rare commodity in a country like Costa Rica.  You have done your homework, checked locations and amenities and know the hotels you will be visiting are the right choice for you.

Reason not to visit:   You might say something along the lines of “the hotel costs $250 a night, so it should have American style 5 star amenities”.  If you judge your hotels on price rather than research, you are rolling the dice in Costa Rica.  Many hotels are higher priced and with far less amenities than one would assume.  Reasons for this can vary from: location, views or grounds, eco-luxury (an example of eco-luxury would be a beautiful treehouse hotel, constructed of precious woods, but without television) or are simply over-priced (yes, there are MANY in this category).

6)  The Roads – Buckle up, it’s going to be an adventure

Reason to visit: You know that Costa Rica is a small mountainous country with a population of under 5 million people to support a national road system.  Due to this, you understand that the roads are in generally poor condition (at least compared to the United States), but that only adds to the adventure.  You have done your research and know how long it will take to drive between destinations.  You are looking forward to taking in the beautiful scenery. 

Reason not to visit: Driving more than a couple hours would ruin your vacation.  Your idea of the perfect vacation is to arrive at the airport, drive 30 minutes to an all-inclusive resort and then do day trips to the attractions.  This is a huge red flag as none of the all-inclusive resorts are located less than 3 hours (in each direction of the rainforest, Arenal  Volcano, hot springs, the cloud forest, better adventures, etc.).  By doing this, you will actually spend much more time driving than if you just visited the destination. 

Another scenario: If your idea of a perfect vacation is to drive 30 minutes to an all-inclusive resort and just sit around the pool or lounge by the beach for a week, you may want to reconsider your destination.  There are nicer all-inclusive resorts at lower prices in destinations like Cancun or Jamaica (though you probably will not want to leave the hotel grounds for security reasons at these destinations). 

7)  Late Nights (or not so late)

Reason to visit:   You do not mind the fact that Costa Rica generally runs on an earlier schedule than most are accustomed to.  Most tours start in the morning and you don’t want to miss a thing.

Reason not to visit: If you are into nightlife such as clubbing or late nights in general, Costa Rica may not be the best destination for you.  Most bars at resorts close by 10pm and most public bars close by midnight unless you are staying in places such as Tamarindo, San Jose, Puerto Viejo or Jaco.  

8)  Critters – cooooool or ewwwwww…

Reason to visit:   The idea of finding colorful dart frogs, strange insects, a variety of snakes, or even encountering lizards that can run across water is absolutely intriguing. 

Reason not to visit:   If this is something you might say; “EEEEK! There are lizards on the wall!  I cannot possibly stay here!”  You should not even consider Costa Rica as a destination for your vacation.  Those lizards are geckos.  They eat mosquitoes and they're your best friend in the tropics.  Even the most modern steel and glass skyscrapers in downtown San Jose end up with bugs inside and there are no hotels or resorts in Costa Rica that can completely seal out the environment.

9)  Safety – But I heard…

Reason to visit:   You have done your homework and know that despite a few random incidents, it is true that Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in the world to visit.  You have read articles such as the USA Today spotlight on safe travel for women travelers .  While it is safe, you are aware that there are problems with petty theft and are planning on taking basic precautions such as using the hotel safe, not leaving items of value unattended on the beach and not walking around San Jose.

Reason not to visit:   If you plan to go to areas such as Jaco or San Jose and intend to party all night, you are significantly increasing your odds of becoming a target for crime.  If you plan to aimlessly walk around with a $10,000 camera strapped around your neck in any neighborhood, you will also increase your odds of becoming a victim of crime.  If you think that just because you spent $500 a night on your hotel room that you can leave anything of value laying around your room, you are just setting yourself up for disappointment.  The reality is Costa Rica IS a safe place to visit, but you have to use common sense.

10)  Location – It takes how many hours to get there!?!?

Reason to visit:   It only takes 2.5 hours to get here from Miami or a little over 5 hours from New York (non-stop of course).  That’s nothing; it takes much longer to go to Hawaii.  This will actually not be the case for most of you, who will likely end up with a short layover somewhere along the line.  The average traveler ends up spending around 7 – 8 hours in the complete duration.  Any seasoned traveler will tell you this is a small amount of time in comparison with most other destinations.

Reason not to visit:   I don’t have enough money to fly direct and am not willing to spend an hour or two in layover.  If that is the case, I would recommend doing a little research into other destinations.  Chances are likely you will find better rates and shorter flights to Costa Rica.  If not, you can always save for next year ;-).

So there you have it.  There are two sides to every story.  I suspect that for many of you, this article will confirm that Costa Rica is perfect for you.  Others will find that Costa Rica probably is not the best destination for them.  If so, we are happy that we were able to shed some light on subjects that are normally only talked about from one point of view.
