The most dangerous volcanic regions in Europe
Posted: April 23, 2024 | Last updated: April 23, 2024
Europe is not necessarily regarded as a world volcano hotspot. Millions of years ago, however, much of the continent was shaped by violent volcanic and seismic events. The reason behind Europe’s volcanic activity is because it is located between the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate, a prime area for volcanism. For its part, Iceland is a huge hotspot, sitting as it does on a rift between the Eurasian Plate and the North American Plate. And Europe's islands, the Canaries for example, and those in the Mediterranean, have long suffered the consequences of frequent, often lethal volcanic eruptions.
According to the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program, a volcano is called "active" when it has erupted within the last 10,000 years. So, how many active volcanoes are there in Europe, and are those classified as dormant likely to vent their anger any time soon?
Click through and discover Europe's most volcanic areas.

Mount Vesuvius, Italy
Among the most famous volcanoes in the world, Vesuvius is relatively young, having been formed around 200,000 years ago. Worryingly active, the last major eruption took place in March 1944 (pictured). But Vesuvius is, of course, known for causing one of the most devastating events in world history: the destruction of Pompeii.

Vesuvius, Italy
In 79 CE, Vesuvius erupted in one of the most catastrophic eruptions of all time. The Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabiae, and several other settlements were obliterated in minutes. Rapid-moving lava flows incinerated everything in their path, while volcanic ash buried people where they stood or crouched. Vesuvius is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because three million people live near enough to be affected by an eruption.

Located in Antarctica, Mount Erebus releases tiny pieces of crystallized gold among the gas, steam and rock it spews into the air daily. Some gold specks have been discovered more than 600 miles away from the volcano.

It sounds like a dream, but it's true; in Antarctica, gold rains from the sky. Tucked in among the glaciers, fiery Mount Erebus is the southernmost active volcano on Earth, providing a bit of heat amid the frozen landscape.
The frozen continent features 138 volcanoes, according to a 2017 study, with around nine of them reported as active. With a summit elevation of 12,448 feet (3,794 meters), Mount Erebus is the most well-known.
Erebus is one of three volcanoes that form Ross Island, and it's said that it was erupting when it was discovered in 1841 during the voyage of Captain James Clark Ross , who carried out important magnetic surveys in the Arctic and Antarctic and discovered the Ross Sea and the Victoria Land region of Antarctica. 'HMS Erebus' was the name of one of his ships.

Scientists still observe the volcano through the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory and conduct field campaigns to look for extreme life forms. The largest Antarctic settlement—McMurdo Station, operated by the United States—is located about 25 south of Mount Erebus and is within sight of the volcano.

Satellite images of the volcano reveal a lava lake that's been bubbling since at least 1972, according to IFL Science.
The volcano regularly pumps out plumes of gas and steam and has been known to eject boulders of partially molten rock known as “volcanic bombs.”
While volcanic bombs are exciting, it's the bursts of gas spraying tiny crystals of metallic gold that surprise scientists, who estimate the volcano spews around 80 grams of gold a day – that's worth around $6,000.
The gold has been found hundreds of miles away from Mount Erebus. Antarctic researchers have detected traces of the gold dust in ambient air up to 621 miles away from the volcano.

Most cyclists in London have used their bikes to commute, according to Strava data released to celebrate Earth Week.
The capital leads the UK for cycling commuters, Strava said. Bristol, Edinburgh, Cambridge and Manchester all see high numbers of human-powered commutes.
The data comes from Strava’s Metro tool. That uses commutes from the app’s tracking of people’s exercises, and then provides that data to 3,500 partners who use it to inform decisions on active travel.
Across the UK, bike commutes saved almost 53 million kg of carbon dioxide, Strava said.
Tuesday is also the most popular day for cycling commutes – with 7am the most popular time – and milennnials are the most active commuters in the UK. More women cyclists plead their commutes than men, the data showed.
Most people said they commute by bike because it lets them exercise at the same time. But 56 per cent of cycle commuters said they also did so to help the environment.
Strava said that the numbers showed the increased focus on people powering their own commutes It is launching a new challenge, dubbed ‘Earth Week’, which will encourage people to log commutes on Strava.
“Strava’s Carbon Savings Tool helps to show our global community the real-world impact of their activities when they tag their trip as a commute. In turn, this helps our Strava Metro team to work with cities and urban planners around the world to secure investment for active transportation that makes every day bicycle trips and commutes safer and more accessible,” said Tom Knights, from Strava Metro.
“For this year’s Earth Day, we are launching a new commute Challenge to encourage our global community to explore active travel. By providing more visibility on carbon savings, we look to inspire individual action towards a common goal of reducing carbon emissions globally. ”

What Is Active Travel?
Active travel is a concept of travel that includes only those forms of transport that require active use of the human body as a transport machine. Examples of the type of travel include walking and cycling, as these burn off energy in comparison to sedentary travel forms like driving or getting the bus. The term active travel can also refer to vacations that involve energetic pursuits such as trekking or cross-country skiiing.
In terms of the more common usage of the term "active travel," it is commuting and other necessary trips that are involved in the focus on walking and cycling, but not when these modes of travel are used for leisure. Active travel is pitted against public transport and cars as common ways to get to places like work, and can attract support from authorities like governmental health agencies. People who already walk or use a bicycle as a primary mode of transport may do so for environmental, health or practical reasons.
It is for these reasons that the proponents of cycling and walking wish to see an increase in the usage of these ways of travel. In addition, active travel is also argued to have beneficial effects on the community, such as increased interaction with neighbors, and a reduction in traffic. Proponents of active travel also cite high levels of obesity as one of the main reasons to choose active travel options over other forms of transport.
Problems facing walking and cycling as a practical option for many people derive from the layout and use of urban and rural areas. Often, these are designed to suit car drivers and people who use buses and trains. Roads without cycle lanes or footpaths, and crowded, high traffic city streets, can make cycling or walking hazardous. Ensuring that cities and countryside authorities provide safe and rapid walking and cycling links to areas of interest are high on the priorities of many advocacy organizations for this way of traveling.
When used in reference to vacations, active travel means something similar, but stretches the definition to include sporting activities, rather than commutes. People who go on these types of vacations look for energetic ways to spend their days off, rather than lounging on a beach and sunbathing. Examples of active vacations include hill walking, cycling through countries to experience the scenery and people at close quarters or lending a hand on a dude ranch.

Mount Ruang Erupts in Indonesia, Spewing Lava Thousands of Feet Into the Sky
Hundreds of earthquakes were detected in the weeks preceding the eruption of the volcano in North Sulawesi province. Hundreds of people were evacuated.

Mount Ruang, a volcano in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday, spewing fiery lava and ash thousands of feet into the night sky and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people in the North Sulawesi province, according to the authorities and local news reports.
The volcano erupted at about 7:19 p.m. local time, Antara, the national news agency, reported. The country’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Wednesday that more than 800 people in nearby villages were displaced by the eruption, many using ferries and taking shelter in churches and community centers.
The authorities said supplies such as mats, blankets, cleaning materials, and tents were needed, and that more shelters might be opening for people fleeing the volcano.
Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago nation. It is spread across what is known as the Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates clash under the surface of the Pacific Ocean and spawn earthquakes and eruptions from volcanoes.
Mount Ruang is a stratovolcano , or a steep, conical volcano that has built up over years in layers from explosive eruptions of lava, rock fragments, ash and other properties.
“It is in a part of the world where there are a lot of active volcanoes,” said Dr. Tracy K.P. Gregg , who chairs the geology department at the University at Buffalo.
Its last major eruption was in 2002, when the column of lava and ash that it spewed reached up to 17 miles, Dr. Gregg said.
She said the volcano in 2002 measured 4, a “large” volcano on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, a scale used to measure the strength of an eruption by looking at several factors, such as duration, ash volume and plume height. Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 measured 6 on the index. Mount St. Helens in the United States in 1980 measured 5.
“So it is a little bit smaller than that,” she said of Mount Ruang. Right now, it is not as violent as the previous eruption, she added, but the volcano cannot be fully assessed while it is in progress.
More than 300 volcanic earthquakes were detected over a period of at least two weeks preceding the eruption of Mount Ruang.
It is not immediately clear why the volcano erupted when it did. “Every volcano has its own personality,” she said.
In the past few years, several volcanoes in Indonesia have erupted. In December, 2023, the bodies of 11 hikers were found on the slopes of Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra, after an eruption that spewed an ash column of nearly 3,000 meters — about 10,000 feet high.
In December 2022, more than 1,900 people were evacuated from the area surrounding Mount Semeru as it erupted. In an eruption there the previous December , more than 50 people were killed and hundreds more were injured.

Tourist plunges 76 metres to her death into active volcano while posing for photo

A tourist plunged 76 metres to her death in Indonesia after tripping while taking photos on the edge of an active volcano.
The woman, identified as 31-year-old Chinese citizen Huang Lihong, was with her husband on a guided tour of Ijen — a volcano park in East Java — when she tumbled into the crater Saturday, Hongxing News reported.
The couple had climbed to the top of the active volcano, which is known for its popular “blue fire” phenomenon, to catch the sunrise.
The tour guide later told authorities that Lihong had initially kept a safe distance from the edge of the crater after being repeatedly warned of the dangers while posing for snaps.
But she then started walking backward to inch closer — then accidentally stepped on her long clothing, tripped and fell into the mouth of volcano.
A photo circulating in local media showed Lihong apparently posing with her leg raised and clouds of sulphur gas behind her just before her deadly tumble.
It took rescuers roughly two hours to retrieve her body, according to authorities.
The tourist’s death has since been ruled an accident.

Her body was scheduled to be transported to Bali before being flown back to China, local media reported.
The Ijen volcano — among a cluster in the region — is known for its “blue fire”, which is caused by combustion of sulfuric gases.
