Airboats have a flat bottomed hull and are powered by a giant fan that sits on the back of the stern instead of the traditional underwater motor. This type of boat is particularly useful in low lying swamp areas. There is no motor prop below the waterline to get stuck in the weeds and muck of shallow water.

Another advantage of this type of watercraft is that the passengers sit up high on the boat’s platform which allows for excellent wildlife viewing. Some of the larger airboats even have stadium seating, so passengers in the back row still have a great view.

What Equipment is Needed?

You’ll want to plan on bringing a few things along on your airboat ride to ensure the best trip possible. As with most outdoor activities in Florida, make sure to pack protective sun gear, including sunscreen and sunglasses. You may also want to bring a hat to protect your face from the sun. Keep in mind that it will be windy as the boat cruises at top speed, so a tight-fitting cap that is easy to hold, bandana, or a hat with a chin strap will work best.

If you are sensitive to wind or you are traveling during the colder months, a long-sleeved shirt or jacket will keep you cozy if the temperature drops. You will also want to bring insect repellant, just in case. 

Make sure to take your camera, video camera, or binoculars with you as well. You won’t want to miss getting that awesome gator shot or capture of any of the other thrilling wildlife encounters you may see during the trip. Also, when out on the water, it’s always a good idea to have a leash or wrist strap attached to your camera. 

Some rental companies provide ear protection and/or lifejackets for young passengers. You may want to contact the company ahead of time to double-check. If not, riders with sensitive ears may want to bring a pair of earplugs or noise-canceling headphones.

Central Florida Airboat Tours

Central Florida Tours is located southwest of Daytona Beach and operates out of the Jolly Gator Fish Camp near Lake Harney. Their airboats only carry up to six passengers (a real airboat, not an air barge). With fewer passengers on board, you can expect a more personal tour experience. 

All the captains are Florida natives and show the utmost respect to the local wildlife. They do not participate in feeding, killing, capturing the alligators that call the river their home.

The Black Hammock

For a large scale airboat ride adventure, check out The Black Hammock further west on Lake Jesup. In addition to a six-passenger sized boat, they also have boats that can accommodate 12, 15, and 18 people. 

All Black Hammock airboat tours include a trip to bird island, which is considered to be the largest colony of wading birds in the county, according to the Seminole Audubon Society. Bring your binoculars! The Black Hammock is a destination in itself. There is a bar, restaurant, gift shop, and even resident alligators and parrots on site. What a great place to spend the day!

Last but not least is Airboat Rides at Midway. Located just west of Titusville, this airboat adventure is a high powered thrill you will never forget.

Our boat is a 18-foot 2010 Alumitech that was fully reconditioned and re-powered in 2019 by Alumitech. It’s powered by a 502 high-output big block engine that boasts plenty of horsepower to take you to the deep into the marsh and dependable to get you back safe. Our custom seating ensures comfort and plenty of space for 6 passengers. Fresh graphics were installed in 2022 along with new custom seat covers.

The best way to race around the city is, of course, with your own wheels. Join one of two huge motorcycle festivals with two wheels of your own or opt for the full four with a Dodge Charger or other NASCAR model. The VOTRAN bus system, taxis, and rideshare services are great options too.

Got a need for speed? If so, visit Daytona beach in January or February, when the Speedweeks will be under way. This motor racing events series is one of the highlights of the city's calendar, with the famous Daytona 500 being the most anticipated event of all. Of course, there will be bigger crowds and higher hotel costs at this time of year. If motor racing isn't up your street, visit between March and May for good weather and fewer tourists.

Coming for the Dayton 500? Pack a serious camera that's up to the task of capturing all that high-speed action. It's a must. And even if you won't be in town for the race, bring:

Each of our airboat adventures is different and nothing is staged. With Spirit of the Swamp, you get the true Florida experience complete with amazing wildlife, and stunning scenery!

There’s never any charge for a weather related cancellation, we issue an immediate refund in full.  If you’d like to rebook, we’ll do our best to reschedule you to a different day. We recommend you book early in your vacation or holiday so that you’ll have time to reschedule – just in case Mother Nature has other plans.

In the spring and summer you should dress like you would for any other outdoor activity, sunglasses are always a great idea!  In late fall and winter, dressing in layers works best as it always feel cooler when you’re moving across the water…

Come experience a thrilling ride on the Hakuna Matata, a 15-passenger high performance airboat. The Airboat Adventure Tour is an “Everglades like” water adventure that allows our patrons to experience the Old Florida flora and fauna of the saltwater tidal creeks that NE Florida has to offer, as well as Naval Warships and Cargo Vessels that frequent the Port of Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport.

The tour includes a thrilling ride through parts of Sisters Creek and Intercoastal Waterways which are tributaries of the historical St Johns River located in the easternmost side of Jacksonville near Mayport at the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean.

Yes, ALL passengers are required to have a ticketed seat and all seats are the same price.

Though our boats are not equipped to accommodate a wheelchair, our docks are wheelchair accessible and provided the passenger can transfer from a wheelchair to the boat seat, they can enjoy the tour.

Wild Willys was a great Airboat ride through the marshes. Saw several gators and lots of wildlife. The guide was knowledgable about the area and very friendly. The people inside were also very friendly and knowledgable. Definitely recommend.

The one-hour airboat ride was perfect. We saw a variety of wildlife. The speed of the boat (what I really came for) was good, some fast times, some slow times. I chose the 9am time to avoid the sun and heat, and that was perfect too. I highly recommend Wild Willy's.
